Code issues in User:Eatcha/curt.js[edit]

Hi Eatcha, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

  1. You edited User:Eatcha/curt.js. Glad to see you coding in javascript! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
  2. Though, that change appears to introduce 1 new esprima issue — the page's status is now having ERRORS. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
  3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in javascript writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding {{ValidationOptOut|type=all}} to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

FV categories[edit]

There is Category:Featured videos which has been there for longer time, and Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons, which you have recently created. What is the difference? Shouldn't both be merged? --A.Savin 00:16, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ASavin Maybe some users treat the Category:Featured videos as a category for featured films. Revision of File:1937-05-10 Special Release - Zeppelin Explodes Scores Dead.ogv Revision of File:Bobby Bumps' Fourth (1917).webm. I didn't remove the category to avoid conflict, Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons may also be useful if other projects(say wiki voyage) decide to start theirs on FV competition. Should I remove the categories? Or If there was/is an FV competition on another wiki? Best,-- Eatcha (talk) 02:53, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There is no FV evaluation on other projects AFAIK and unlikely to be ever established: remember that videos are not often used, for example, in Wikipedia articles or Wikivoyage guides, and it is controversial if even local Featured Pictures should exist (except EN and maybe Persian, all are meanwhile inactive). In short, I think, Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons is to be merged into Category:Featured videos. --A.Savin 13:19, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A.Savin What about the file difference? 140 in Category:Featured videos(contains all videos from Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons + 59 non-FV videos ) and 81 in Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons. -- Eatcha (talk) 13:25, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK, before we had FVC videos could be nominated on FPC just like photos. So for FPC promoted videos the Category:Featured videos was created, but it was added by hand, not via the "Featured"-template. Now we have the separate COM:FV galleries, but the assessment procedure is basically the same, except that COM:FVC is now at a different place rather than COM:FPC. But all formerly promoted videos should be handled the same way as recently promoted via FVC. So, all Featured videos (no matter if FPC or FVC promoted) should be in FV galleries and included in FV category via template. That is, Category:Featured videos on Wikimedia Commons is to be merged into Category:Featured videos, the latter is to be included in the assessment template, and all featured videos are to be tagged with this assessment template (and included in Category:Featured videos). --A.Savin 14:15, 29 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Loading obfuscated javascript from pastebin (why are you even doing that?)[edit]

Hello.

I've just made an edit to your user JS to comment out your loading of obfuscated javascript from Pastebin [11]. I've no idea why you're doing that, or what it's trying to achieve (I've got better things to be doing than reverse engineering it), but please stop doing so.

Loading JS from offsite is not reccommended generally, and with CSP changes in the future it will break completely anyway.

Reedy (WMF) (talk) 21:29, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Okay will not load anything from any external sites, will remove that thing from my local JS include file. Looks like I triggered some kinda detection system because of that script. It's something I just don't want to have on Media-wiki servers, nor do I want anyone to read that script. But it's completely harmless. Best, Eatcha (talk) 07:33, 2 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Masumrezarock undo.js doesn't works. Why you need a user script for undo-ing? It's a mw feature. How does this helps with editing? -- Eatcha ([[User talk:Eatc

ha|talk]]) 11:20, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

It even doesn't let you operate the cursor freely due pointer-events set 'none', which is undesirable IMO. -- Eatcha (talk) 11:23, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, undo.js is a script for adding an undo button to a diff page on mobile since the MobileFrontend lacks this feature. It only works on mobile. See the documentation on meta-wiki to know how to use it. The script should load on https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/373614850 if you installed it correctly. I just wanted to show you an example. And I am not asking you to prepare a "undo" script. I am asking you to prepare a script to add custom summary to the when rollbacking edits. There is one similar script on Commons but I don't particularly like that script's layout. Masum Reza📞 11:31, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The Internet Archive and video files[edit]

I saw at "File:A trip through japan with the ywca ca 1919.webm" that there is a link for the Internet Archive's Wayback machine, which is awesome. But that link is "https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ3RteagLoY" which only saves a new link, could you also add a link for the way that the original website looked at the time of upload, this is because if someone uploads a free video that isn't in the public domain but then doesn't immediately click on the link then now archived version of the page will be viewable for Wikimedia Commons license reviewers. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:35, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Unrelated to the above, but could you please write a piece about this process and how it works over at "Commons:Archive external links#Video files", as the community voted in what you implemented and it would be handy to document it on this page as a model for others to emulate on other file types. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 20:38, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

On clicking https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJ3RteagLoY , what I see is at https://i.ibb.co/kK0Vssh/Screenshot-2019-11-06-Wayback-Machine.png . It shows all the archived versions of that page. If a link is not archived, it shows suggestions to archive the link. What do you mean by "which only saves a new link"? IMHO it saves a new link if IA doesn't have that link already archived is not the case try: https://web.archive.org/web/*/https://i.ibb.co/kK0Vssh/Screenshot-2019-11-06-Wayback-Machine.png

If you want that archive link to show the oldest archive, I don't know if there is a URL argument to do it. Most likely there isn't.

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

MOTD bot[edit]

Hi, until now the MOTD assessment box was put into an "Assessment" section, now your bot puts it into the description section (before the license section and moving the license information down and out of view (with the structured data already moving everything down)). Is there a reason for this? --C.Suthorn (talk) 16:23, 17 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

C.Suthorn, you want the bot to place it below the license section ? I am just following what I noticed in other motds tagged by un-related users. I can put that under the license section, but almost everyone likes it above the license section you may check past potds/motds to verify my claim. Yeah I am gonna ask for the same thing. Could your bot please put the motd template under the section =={{Assessment}}==, which should appear underneath the section licence (if it exists).--Roy17 (talk) 14:36, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Roy You meant append the motd template ? The problem is many users want the =={{Assessment}}== above the license, if you participate at COM:FP you would know. Some users even fight to take credit for nominating an Image. I don't have any problem with videos, but a featured picture "I am afraid of getting attacked/criticized/revenge votes etc". -- Eatcha (talk) 14:42, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well I dont know what preferences others have. I dont mind Assessment appearing above Licence, but motd should go under Assessment.
But the layout of Description Licence Assessment seems to make more sense, because most files only have the standard Description Licence sections. If an additional section appears, it probably should go after the other two.--Roy17 (talk) 14:52, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Experienced users who do regular contributions to the POTD or MOTD would get relatively a lot of notifications but they're used to them and I don't think it'd bother them. So yes, go for it :) --Podzemnik (talk) 08:03, 25 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
