About of new photographic equipment

Some time ago you recommended me to make a grant to obtain a photographic equipment by some chapter of WMF. Although the camera is not mine (It is from the local photography team), I took your recommendation and it was approved, I wanted to thank you again for your suggestion (you have given me two good recommendations 1) Search for a job here in Canada which allowed me emigrate 2) Make this request that would allow me to get better photos). I really appreciate any other recommendations from you that all seem to be very good. --Wilfredor (talk) 14:28, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Your most memorable shot 2020

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

Over the course of the past two years, we've been sharing pictures that have a special meaning with each other at the start of the new year. Today, I'm inviting you add your most memorable shot of 2020 to this page:

I hope you, your familiy, and your friends are well during these difficult times. I wish you all the best for 2021 and I can't wait to see what your most memorable shot of 2020 looks like.

Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 20:31, 30 January 2021 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:31, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

FPC comment

Hello. Just to make things clear, considering this comment of yours, you won't support File:6 (معماری حرم امام رضا (ع.jpg if I nominate it for FP, will you?

And could you please tell me if there is any chance for the following pictures to be promoted?

These are among the 63 images which went to the final phase of WLM Iran 2020. Thanks 4nn1l2 (talk) 11:57, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

4nn1l2, I don't know you so well, so don't know how much you know about the jargon used at FP but see Commons:Photography terms for info. That linked file has a fairly major stitching error, which I think sadly kills its chances at FP.
A. This is a high resolution photo but hasn't captured the highlights well so people will complain they are blown. The bare bulbs are unattractive. For such a geometric design, there isn't symmetry and the corner of a door frame spoils the composition a bit.
B. At 5.8MP this is quite low resolution today. Taken with a mobile phone, it lacks the sharp detail you'll see in Amirpashaei's photos. It is a lovely view and the camera/framing nicely level. But the lighting highlights are blown, which probably kills it. Shame.
C. This stands a chance at FP. The lighting is good and people like sunlight against dark clouds. There is a bit of chroma noise in the sky. The composition is a bit central, which unfortunate. Some people may ask/insist on a vertical perspective correction because the sides taper a bit. It is hard to be sure with these buildings if the verticals are actually vertical or whether the tower does taper. The fence posts are not a reliable guide, though do slope up towards the centre, as one would expect with vertical perspective distortion (which occurs when the photographer does not hold the camera level, but points it up a bit to get everything in). Other photos on the internet, however, also show tapering so perhaps this is correct. Not everyone agrees verticals always need 100% corrected, even if they are meant to be vertical in reality. Even if the reviewers agreed the verticals should be corrected, this must be done on another copy of a file per COM:OVERWRITE, as that is not an uncontroversial or minor edit. You may just have to accept that some will oppose over that, and remember you only need 2/3 support.
D/E. These were taken with a gopro and the level of detail is poor. The lighting (time of day) could be better and composition could include more of the building. The lens on this camera is causing barrel distortion on the building.

Thank you for your detailed answer. I am not familiar with photography and I just expected a yes/no answer. I trust your judgement. Thank you again for your time. 4nn1l2 (talk) 14:21, 16 February 2021 (UTC)

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow

Dehazing help

Hello Colin! I took some aerial photos from Andalucia during the winter, and due to the haze, the photos are not that imposing. Could you dehaze for instance this photo, and if the results are promising, I could buy some dehazing software? —kallerna (talk) 13:24, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

Hi Kallerna. I've used the dehaze feature in Lightroom, but don't have experience of other packages. I'm willing to give it a go. Do you have the raw file? That would give the best results. But I can try from the JPG if that is all you have. Are you looking for something realistic or artistic?
I get Lightroom through Adobe's Photography plan, which gives two variants of Lightroom (classic on the desktop and a new cloud version), Photoshop and some mobile apps. You can often get a 12 month subscription cheaper than the monthly fee if you shop around (e.g. Amazon prime day). -- Colin (talk) 14:48, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
That's the .JPG straight from the camera, I do not use .RAW-files anymore. I've only seen some example images, and would like to see what could be extracted from the photos, so if you like, both realistic and artistic would be great.
I used to have Lightroom, but did not learn to use it, so stopped subscribing. Let's see, thanks for the help! —kallerna (talk) 15:34, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Kallerna I've uploaded a dehazed version over the top of yours. Feel free to revert or move that to another filename if you prefer. The changes I made were
  • Clicked on "auto", which applied a small amount of contrast enhancement based on Adobe's AI.
  • Experimented with Dehaze and settled on +50 which is quite an extreme adjustment, but the image was very hazy to begin with
  • The distance was then far too blue. This is because the atmosphere filters out other colours leaving only blue with distance, and the dehaze emphasises this. So I went to the Saturation control and clicked the button that lets me adjust colour saturations by click-dragging on the photo. I then went over to an area of shadow mountain that i thought should be more neutral and clicked and dragged down to reduce mainly blue saturation till I thought it looked better.
  • Added a bit of Clarity, which is a local contrast that brings out more texture in the mountain features.
  • Deepened the blacks a bit more.
The consequence of so much dehaze is that the distance is a bit noisier now. I could have applied some noise removal for that but decided not to here. If I had the raw file, I'd make sure the sky and featureless areas didn't get any noise added to them, while retaining detail where it is needed.
Perhaps one of my talk page watchers can do better. But I think those results are a good improvement. What do you think? -- Colin (talk) 20:09, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Not bad! The results might be even better with less extreme haze cases, like this, I think I should get Lightroom back to my mac as the procedure sounds quite simple. Thanks for the help! —kallerna (talk) 06:08, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Bonjour,

Editing photos

Thank you for your message. I didn't know those rules. Apparently you made the change yourself, thank you. The reason I have created a lighter version is because this beautiful and amazing picture appeared too dark on my personnal page [1]. --Io Herodotus (talk) 15:47, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you, Colin for having spotted the horrible blurred component of this panorama. It is fixed now but I had to resort to a version with people. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 20:06, 18 October 2021 (UTC)
