Monuments in the Island of Ireland[edit]

Hi. Since getting myself indef blocked forever on enWQ I'e moved more into Wikidata, Commons and Simple and gaWP; causing havoc wherever I go but occasionally doing something useful (I hope!); nowadays as DeirgeDel but also previously as Djm-leighpark & Deirge Ó Dhaoinebeaga. I sometimes cause havoc with the NLI Marys' daily picture on "Flickr commons" and sometimes duplicate images here when appropriate, but I haven't done that for a couple of months. I'm usually on the English South coast but I was in Dublin & South Sligo last July and took loaded some pictures for the WLM campaign. As a result of those activities I have come to suspect wikidata, and therefore WLM, does not have details of a lot of buildings for which SMR ID records exist. If that is the case I'd like an updated feed from the NIAH/NMS to make that happen. I may or may not have the time, resource or the skillset to help make the happen. Similar but different issues occur for Northern Ireland; there use/interface to the ESRI Historical Environment Viewer seems a little different. I said I'd informally discuss this (& Monopoly & Bray Daly IKB, 1850, & 1852 images & FoP (Ireland) ) at m:Meetup/UK_virtual/18 Wednesday 26 April 2023 20:30: Committing to that discussion has at least got me to collating some WIP notes at w:commons:User:DeirgeDel/M as I've been distracted on enWikiquote and failed to progress this over the days of longer nights. Given your Wikipedia position and interests I'd at least to co-ordinate with you anything I might BOLDly try to do on the SMR-ID/NIEA_building_ID fronts. You're welcome to the Virtual meeting or to give any comments/suggestions but I appreciate everyone's time is limited any I myself may need to drop this at any time. Thankyou. -- DeirgeDel tac 20:23, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I was involved in that early import of data from both a scrap of the SMR database and then using the NIAH databases, which predated the open.gov datasets being available. Couple of things: 1) a lot of the sites in the database are not on public land and/or are not safely accessible so it was agreed with the relevant departments that those sites would not be listed for WLM. 2) The licence that these datasets are published under (CC-BY-SA 3.0) is not compatible with Wikidata, so I have been stymied in getting more of the sites up for WLM, including the more recent survey of Dublin by the NIAH. I have yet to find a work around on this.
I wrote about that initial work that we did a few years ago for a conference. Smirkybec (talk) 09:51, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply. I took some photos in South Sligo last summer and wondered ... why a couple of these were not on WLM! (e.g. File:Corn mill ruins, Keenaghan, Ballymote (2046o).jpg). I can understand that from an WLM viewpoint why those sites might not be suitable for the photo competition, however they might still qualify for a wikidata item. NB: I created d:Q114773286 ... that photos were taken from the Heritage Trail - or a wee walk just off of it but observing no-entry signs. I also might create an entry if the NLI publishes photo from e.g. French which can be moved to commons. Todays NLI is an interesting case but wouldn't qualify as a copyvio. I'll probably take the case of Bray Daly to a wikimedia.ie zoom meet now that I've joined the mailing list. By the way does Wikimedia IE cover Northern Ireland or is it Wikimedia UK? Thanks. -- DeirgeDel tac 14:28, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
They would certainly qualify for Wikidata, but the issue with the dataset licence remains - it would need to be CC-0 or public domain to be imported in a systematic way. Wikimedia Community Ireland covers just the Republic, but we collaborate with WMUK on Northern Ireland for events and some photo campaigns.
What is the specific issue with Bray Daly? Smirkybec (talk) 16:12, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It arose because I passed through Bray Daly on the way from Rosslare to Westland Row/Pearse St. last summer and noticed a mosaic of Isambard Kingdom Brunel (IKB). I meant to bring that up at the IKB pub and the Pompey meet but forgot! My immediate reaction is what good did he do for the railways of Ireland, the GWR having given serious grief to my heroes Bergin and Pim Junior and generally having made a mess of Kingstown to Dalkey! (Now my memory may be a bit unfair to IKB). If you look at Category:Bray Daly Station there are subcats for Category:Painted murals in Bray Daly Station‎ that were done in the 1990s and the Categories:Mosaics in Bray Daly Station‎ that replaced them after he former deteriorated. Now some might claim a FoP issue on some or all of these. Specifically there is an additional quirk with File:IMG BrayStationMural5412w.jpg as used on [[:w:en:Bray Daly railway station][ showing the opening as 1852. Its replacement File:MURALS IN BRAY TRAIN STATION (PLATFORM 2 DALY STATION)-126997.jpg shows the corrected opening date of 1854! (I said 1850 and 1852 above but I got it wrong - my memory is failing). I could ask someone to fix it on enWP but they might be had up for proxy editing! -- DeirgeDel tac 18:37, 26 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, specific question, I need some help as I am getting stuck. The above category needs looking at - It is confused. It has a mix of "Gaelic games" and "Gaelic football" probably referring to the same thing ("football" being overgeneralised). I also found out that the ladies Gaelic is not organised under the GAA, but under the LFGA, so would "Gaelic Games" need to be the top domain, with football, hurling, camogie, handball under it and then a separate tree for who organises it (GAA or LGFA) or do we really care about who organises it, and should it just be "Gaelic Games in Donegal" (forwarding to there from Category:Donegal GAA for example)? And then there are categories for Gaelic being played outside of Ireland that I can't even find in the tree. I created Category:Gaelic games by region but then under there it now has Category:Gaelic football by country‎ which probably includes other Gaelic sports... Anyway, if you have no idea either, any tips where to post my question to the attention of Irish editors? Thank you in advance! -- Deadstar (msg) 08:46, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh interesting problem... I'm wondering would looking at the categories on EN Wikipedia help? I'd be inclined to ask on WikiProject Ireland on Wikipedia, or tag people into the conversation. I'm not sure where you'd have the conversation over here - although, someone like @Mike Peel might be able to advise on where you'd begin that discussion here on Commons. I've had some discussions here, like on the lock numbers, but it never actually fixed fully :/ probably need to be bold. Smirkybec (talk) 10:07, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Laurel Lodged - I noticed you did some work on these too. Can you assist? -- Deadstar (msg) 11:36, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The best way would be to have one hierarchy for games and a different hierarchy for organisations.

  1. "Gaelic games" → "Gaelic football" (mainly men) → "ladies Gaelic"
  2. "Gaelic games" → "Hurling" (mainly men) → "camogie"

Then

  1. "GAA" → regional board → "County boards" (e.g. Tipperary GAA) → clubs
Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:47, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Laurel Lodged - Thanks for that. I'll see what I can do. Also: I assume that all GAA grounds are or can be used for both hurling and football? As in, technically, they are "gaelic games venues", and not "gaelic football venues"? And the organisational tree sits under "Gaelic games" and not the other way around, right? -- Deadstar (msg) 11:57, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For men, the grounds are dual purpose effectively. For women, the grounds have a smaller area. However, in practice, they literally just move the goalposts for a shorter pitch. another thing, under the Byzantine logic of the GAA, a "county board" can be outside Ireland. See Category:County boards of the Gaelic Athletic Association where they pretend that London is a county of Ireland for organisational purposes. Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:00, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, for the organisation, a better hierarchy might be:
  1. "Gaelic games organisations" → GAA → regional board → "County boards" → clubs
  2. "Gaelic games organisations" → Camogie Association → there might not be sufficient content for camogie "county boards" Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:23, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I think I got it sorted on a higher level, please feel free to rearrange (be bold) if required! -- Deadstar (msg) 12:26, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Brilliant work! Well done :) Smirkybec (talk) 12:27, 12 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the slow response, looks like you're sorted, but just to say: best thing is to be bold (if someone objects, hey, new collaborator. ;-) ), second best thing is probably to go to the Commons:Village pump, third best thing to do a category for discussion (ranked low since they easily seem to get stuck for multiple years...). Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:42, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

As a sidenote (for Wikimedia Ireland) - it may be worth asking for photographs of the sports equipment, there is very little available for something that is played so widely! Compare Category:Gaelic games equipment to Category:Association_football_equipment for example, there is definitely scope for improvement :) -- Deadstar (msg) 08:40, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We are hoping to do something for Wiki Loves Living Heritage in Ireland, which is about intangible cultural heritage and that includes some sports. Smirkybec (talk) 09:31, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki Loves Monuments question[edit]

Hi Smirkybec, I hope you can help me with something. For the Wiki Loves Monuments banner I miss a translation of "Learn more" in Irish. If this text is not logic in your language, use then instead a translation of "More information". Can you provide me a translation in Irish? Thanks! Romaine (talk) 10:30, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Romaine, I have just asked our Irish Language Officer to confirm my attempt at a translation, so I'll get back to you on that as soon as possible! Smirkybec (talk) 15:09, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Romaine, not sure exactly where to put the extra translated text, but the Irish for "more information" is "Tuilleadh eolais" - sorry it took a bit longer than I expected :) Smirkybec (talk) 21:32, 7 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Clonegal/Clonegall[edit]

Hi, with regard to the move of Category:Clonegal Bridge: initial spelling taken from Buildings of Ireland site. -- Deadstar (msg) 09:04, 4 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Indeed, but much like Bagenalstown/Muine Beag - Clonegall is the official spelling but all the locals and the signs use Clonegal (and that is the name of the EN Wikipedia article). I thought it best to consolidate all the relevant categories under one spelling rather than the two constantly spinning off, hope that makes sense?
