BMacZeroBot adds images to disambiguation page

Hi BMacZero, the disambiguation page Category:Landscape should be empty, but it currently contains more than 900 files. I checked a few and found that they were all uploaded by BMacZeroBot. Please make sure that your bot doesn't add disambiguation pages as categories. Category:Landscapes may be slightly more adequate, but, as has been noted above, is still far too general and shouldn't be flooded with files either. --Sitacuisses (talk) 18:06, 30 October 2019 (UTC)

@Sitacuisses: Thanks for the feedback! I did change things so the bot should make use of location subcategories now, such as Category:Landscapes of Washington (state), so this shouldn't be a problem going forward. Those files are probably all from before that change, which I added on September 20th. – BMacZero (🗩) 15:57, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Jmabel ! talk 01:08, 14 December 2019 (UTC)

I don't think I've ever put this much work into metadata for what's really a pretty lousy scan of a photo. 45+ minutes, much of it research (and some of it writing an email to tell them they had this four blocks off from where it was, on a different cable car line). It continues to be the case that I find moderate-to-serious metadata errors on at least 20% of these University of Washington Libraries photos, and that doesn't even account for the fact that if I'm catching that many, there must be some I'm missing, too. I guess I'm glad you brought these in, because I'm feeding a lot of corrections back to the library that I guess will be of use to anyone who ever actually needs to use this material, but it's getting a little tedious being their unpaid labor. - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 11 January 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Wow, that's a pretty bad error rate. Do you think it's worth it to us to continue uploading new images of this type? I haven't been running the bot due to a lack of spare time, but I'll probably come back to it at some point, and I'm sure there are more Seattle images I haven't reached yet. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:14, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
At the very least, I think we should add a template that gives a clue about the error rate we've seen on these. I have now certainly spent over 800 hours going through what you have uploaded to date. I haven't been tracking the number of photos I've reviewed in that time (certainly upwards of 2,000, probably twice that), so this is not a small sample. Also, there are (for example) 100+ photos of unknown people walking on downtown Seattle streets in the early 20th Century. Presumably, unless they are interestingly dressed, the only interest in such photos would be the place, and that is typically undocumented in the metadata beyond "Seattle". So far, I've made some effort to place these (and added ImageNotes or further description) but haven't yet added categories.
Besides the outright errors, the omissions boggle the mind. Photo of a building that is probably brand new, and no indication that it was brand new when the photo was taken. Photo of a building identified by the name it had for a couple of years, not the one it subsequently had for 6 decades; etc.
Back on errors, for a moment though: have a look at https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Olympic_Mountains_and_Elliott_Bay_from_Seattle,_ca_1900_(SEATTLE_1728).jpg&action=history. Roughly an hour, partly generating ImageNotes but also successively working out that their "ca. 1908" photo had to be (succesively) before 1904, before 1903, and finally before January 2, 1901. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I created {{UWash-Check-Needed}} - we can use that going forward and maybe apply it to existing unchecked images with VFC. Feel free to modify it if you can add more helpful information.
Hopefully all this corrected information will be helpful to Wikipedia and anyone else who's browsing the images here or at UWash! – BMacZero (🗩) 04:48, 14 January 2020 (UTC)

Maybe we should have something like Category:Cowlitz River in Mount Rainier National Park analogous to Category:Nisqually River in Mount Rainier National Park? - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: I did that based on this map which indicates that no part of the Cowlitz River is actually in Mount Rainier National Park. But let me know if I misread it or it's just wrong. – BMacZero (🗩) 17:22, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm absolutely certain that the Box Canyon of the Cowlitz is in Mount Rainier National Park. It's in the south part of the park, about halfway between the Stevens Canyon entrance and Paradise. See maps at http://npmaps.com/mount-rainier/
I believe that technically it is on the Middle Fork of the Cowlitz River; I don't think we normally break down the Cowlitz by its forks.
https://discoverlewiscounty.com/outdoors/box-canyon-cowlitz certainly agrees that it is considered part of the Cowlitz, but I'd be prepared to see a citation otherwise.

"Competitive swimmers"

You might want to know: your bot puts Category:Competitive swimmers on pretty much anything where people are swimming in any sense, even children wading at a beach. Case in point: File:Swimmers at Woodland Park Beach, Green Lake, ca 1922 (SEATTLE 2500).jpg, which I just fixed, one of four I stumbled on today because I'm going through pictures of parks in Seattle. - Jmabel ! talk 16:45, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thanks, I can directly correct that category mapping for any future uploads. – BMacZero (🗩) 02:31, 26 March 2020 (UTC)
Just another odd redirect; Category:Swimmers was redirecting to Category:Competitive swimmers. I changed it to Category:People swimming. – BMacZero (🗩)

I finally have this down to a thousand photos. Probably needless to say, a lot of the ones that are left are going to be the toughest to get right. I may be taking a break from this some time soon to focus on something easier for a while. - Jmabel ! talk 15:43, 1 April 2020 (UTC)

Jmabel Thanks again for all your hard work improving all these images and making them more useful. Breaks are good! If I resume uploading at some point I'll be working on NPGallery again or the UWash portraits collection, so I probably won't be spamming Seattle again in the immediate future. – BMacZero (🗩) 02:18, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

They are pretty much all outside looking in, so it can't be done with something like Hugin. But in many cases we have the same angle (or almost) from different points in time, and a dissolve would be possible. - Jmabel ! talk

Not sure where your bot got the idea this was in Virginia; dropping you a note mainly in case this also affected other photos. - Jmabel ! talk 05:13, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Thanks again for the report. It's supposed to translate the input location (e.g. "United States--Washington (State)--Gate City") into a friendly name and category by looking up the bottom-level name (e.g. "Gate City") on Wikidata, then verifying it by checking for "Washington (state)" and "United States" as parents. It looks like the bug is that it was happy as long as any one of them matched (e.g. just "United States"). This all might be bit much anyway considering that all this gets us in the location field is an automatic link to the Wikipedia page if there is one. I should probably just preserve the original format. There are not other uses of Gate City but I'll try to check for other, similar errors. – BMacZero (🗩) 05:31, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Review requested

I just wrote Commons:Uploading from the Seattle Municipal Archives Flickr stream. Could I ask you to have a look? You probably have as much context for this as anyone. - Jmabel ! talk 05:56, 24 June 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Nice, it looks clear and thorough to me. The only thing I noticed is that you recommend converting the higher-quality TIFFs to JPEGs to overwrite the Flickr files. TIFFs are sometimes lossless files and converting them to JPEG might lose a bit of quality. That may or may not be important to you. I know some batch uploads upload the HQ TIFFs as separate files and link them to the JPEGs, though of course having to duplicate the page content isn't ideal either. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:23, 24 June 2020 (UTC)
I figure (1) since they release JPEGs (and very occasionally a GIF), I think we should upgrade the JPEG to the full size and (2) there is almost no chance the Seattle Municipal Archives' own site will go away, so if someone needs the TIFF they can always fetch it from there just like I do.
Glad to know you think what I wrote is clear. - Jmabel ! talk 02:17, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Well, that's annoying; I maybe should have been paying attention, but I hadn't noticed that the original watermark on this user's JVC camcorder images (which I assumed at the time it was okay to crop out) included the "noncommercial" licensing symbol that contradicts the license terms specified on Flickr itself(!) (and which were confirmed by FlickreviewR). If I'd noticed that, I'd have thought twice about uploading it or at least asked someone first.

Thanks for spotting it regardless.

Anyway, I was wondering what the situation regarding this user's images is. Is it being proposed that they're deleted?

All the best,

Ubcule (talk) 17:12, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

@Ubcule: It's understandable, the watermark is very unobtrusive. After this was noticed I contact the user on Flickr and he indicated that while he did intend for the photos to have a Noncommercial license, he was okay with relicensing the ones we already had for us, so I think we're okay to keep these. Here is the discussion: Commons:Village_pump/Copyright/Archive/2020/06#File:黒 3 (7076018431).jpg. I should have cleaned up those categories after that; I'll make a note about this on the category page. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:09, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
Actually I suppose I should go through OTRS and then get these categories deleted, so I'll see about that. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:13, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
Ah, that's okay... I hope(!) Thank you for clarifying that and for putting the effort into resolving this. Ubcule (talk) 21:03, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Got it at File:Street clock in front of S Friedlander and Son, Inc, Seattle, ca 1922 (MOHAI 4361).jpg. I've done about a third of the PD images from that collection and will work through the rest. – BMacZero (🗩) 06:58, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
File:Bessie Hall Dempsey in costume holding two cats, Seattle, circa 1920 (MOHAI 8574).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Washington Laundry building and delivery carriages, Seattle, 1910 (MOHAI 13052).jpg has some sort of incoherent constructed "credit line"; I figure you have the best chance of working out what is going on there & fixing it. - Jmabel ! talk 01:53, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Hmm, that's actually almost exactly what the source has for the "Credit Line", except the closing bracket got dropped for some reason. I assume they wanted that to mean "MOHAI, 1969.4602.2" and just didn't bother replacing the wildcard for every entry. I'll note that and repair it at some point, thanks for the report. – BMacZero (🗩) 06:12, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Took a while to make sense of this. I'm 99% sure that I've got it. I'm still concerned that the visual could be actively misleading, but I can't find an appropriate warning template. - Jmabel ! talk 02:02, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

re Huh, I see what you mean. I wonder if we should just crop it all the way in. That seems to be what someone already tried to do, anyway, as I think you're right, it looks like a stereo card. – BMacZero (🗩) 02:59, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Rollbacker!

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Commons:Rollback. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. — Tulsi Bhagat contribs | talk ] 04:16, 7 January 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:NPS employee showing children newspapers in front of a statue of Frederick Douglass at Frederick Douglass National Historic Site. (276fdfea54694ad587460157aad7a0ab).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. Categories

Please adjust the categories you are giving the National Park Service images you are uploading.

1. Category:Nht is for prison rail vehicles in Poland. Therefore, it should not be applied to images of National Grasslands in the United States.
2. Category:National Register of Historic Places in Kansas is not for images but for more specific categories especially counties where the NRHP properties are located. All Kansas counties should be included by now. However, ...
3. You are uploading images for places that already have categories and you are not using them. This includes Category:Cimarron National Grassland and Category:Comanche National Grassland.
4. Category:Structures in Kansas and other Kansas categories should not be used for houses located in New Mexico. I would have thought that would have been obvious. You did this for locations in Colorado as well.

I cleaned up the mess you made yesterday. I would appreciate it if you would clean up the mess you made today. May I also suggest you do a better job of adding categories to your mass uploads. While I appreciate the effort, it's not helpful. Farragutful (talk) 13:05, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

@Farragutful: Thanks for the bug report. Those uploads are all handled automatically by a bot, including trying to guess how to map NPGallery's "keywords" to Commons categories. It's unfortunately impossible to write an automated system that does this exactly right, and it can get confused by things that aren't called exactly the same thing on NPGallery and Commons (for example, "Nht" means "National Historic Trails" on NPGallery but apparently refers to that obscure rail car on Commons). It tries to get close because I think it's better for it to try and let humans make corrections rather than to not try at all and make humans manually categorize the thousands of images from scratch. I do lots of work on this myself, mostly using Help:Cat-a-lot, which makes it much faster.
  • I will correct "Nht" to use Category:National Historic Trails of the United States instead.
  • When the bot can identify a more specific location to use it will not use broad categories like Category:National Register of Historic Places in Kansas, but when it can't figure it out for whatever reason it puts them in the broad category to make it easy for a human to diffuse them using Help:Cat-a-lot or Help:Hotcat. It failed to identify those locations because NPGallery had them in lower case; I'll correct it.
  • The Santa Fe Historic Trail images were going in Kansas categories because the bot uses Wikidata to know where things are, and Wikidata:Q1856887 says that the Santa Fe Trail is in Kansas (while of course it actually stretches across multiple states). I'll fix the Wikidata entry and hopefully that will make the bot work correctly.
If you run into any more categories that it repeatedly gets wrong, let me know and I will investigate them. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:30, 21 May 2021 (UTC)

Deletion of Incomplete-Category

Hi BMacZero, regarding your deletion of the cat, I checked this file:File:Iyad Abumoghli.jpg which seems to be OK, but when you click the biggest resolution and then try to zoom in, you only get a white picture and no zoomed in picture. Maybe you have to check all you deletions there. Mirer (talk) 18:16, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

@Mirer: Hmm, I will check some of those then. The highest resolution of that particular image looks fine to me on Edge ([direct link]). What browser are you using? – BMacZero (🗩) 18:19, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Oh sorry, this looks like a FF-only bug (or is it only my FF installation?!?). After restarting FF, I see the picture (after maximizing) for half a second and then only white .... Works like a charm in four other browsers. Mirer (talk) 18:30, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
@Mirer: Okay, cool. It does seem to only affect these images and not other large images, so I'll try to find out if something can be done. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:39, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
When looking into the file with a Hexviewer, there is the typical ending of a jpg file missing. So this one (or all, or most?) is at least "a little bit" corrupt/damaged. --Mirer (talk) 18:41, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
@Mirer: Cropping 0 pixels with CropTool seems to repair it. I will revert my edits so this can be done eventually. – BMacZero (🗩) 18:48, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

West Seattle (steam ferry)

Do you know if there is any particular reason we don't have https://digitalcollections.lib.washington.edu/digital/collection/transportation/id/737 on Commons, or is it just part of a collection you've never gotten around to? I ask because it is en:File:West Seattle (steam ferry).jpeg on en-wiki, scaled down and with what seems to me a quite overcautious rationale as a non-free image. I would think it was a pretty safe bet that it is public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 05:03, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

@Jmabel: It looks like the file was undated when I scraped the data from the collection page, but at some point was updated with a date. I redownloaded it and it is now here: File:Side-wheel_steam_ferry_WEST_SEATTLE,_Washington,_probably_between_1907_and_1914_(TRANSPORT_737).jpg. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:49, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

You are receiving this message because you voted in the 2021 Picture of the Year contest.

I see you created this category. Do you have some basis to associate "Curtis Studio" with Asahel Curtis rather than his brother Edward S. Curtis (and/or Clara Curtis, Edward's wife)? Everything I can find ties "Curtis Studio" to the latter two, although Asahel was an employee for a while in the 1890s. See, in particular, [1], [2], [3], [4]. - Jmabel ! talk 22:42, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Hmm, if I did I don't recall what it was. It was probably an assumption, I don't think I was aware of Edward Curtis. I think you are probably correct. – BMacZero (🗩) 03:05, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
