Commons:Categories and avoid "over-categorization"[edit]

Hi, as being tagged {categorize} has been fixed, please see here. Please also check Commons:categories and avoid "over-categorization", p.e. here. Thanks and best regards, Roland zh (talk) 21:38, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I checked "over-categorization" section. Roads in Hyderabad is not a sub-category of Hyderabad. So it is not a case of "over-categorization". By the way, I see you have created many sub-categories that are empty or do not make much sense. The goal of sub-categories is to ease finding images, not make images difficult to find. Can we discuss this someplace?, Amy
I added "Roads in Hyderabad, India‎" as a sub-category of "Hyderabad, India‎" as a compromise. Thanks, Amy
Hi,
  1. Please, read Commons:Categories and try to understand the meaning of "over-categorisation" ;-)
  2. Back to Hyderabad (India): Indeed, "Roads in Hyderabad" are a 'subcategory" of "Road transport in Hyderabad", and so on, that's it. Therefore to add "Roads in Andhra Pradesh" and "Roads in Hyderabad" is one of the definitions of "over-categorization".
  3. We already did/do "discuss this someplace".
  4. [added]: [quotation start]I added "Roads in Hyderabad, India‎" as a sub-category of "Hyderabad, India‎" ...[quotation end] is not correct, once more, please read Commons:Categories.
  5. [added]: That edit may be similar, imho may Category:Geography of Udaipur added ...

Hi, maybe that former thread will explain a litter better, regards, Roland zh (talk) 23:09, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
[started here therefore moved from my talk ;-) start] Hi Roland - I read the commons categories. I made mistakes on many images. I was trying to help with "uncategorized images", and "over-categorized" many. It must have been a lot of work for you to undo what I did. Will be careful next time. Thanks, Amy [started here therefore moved from my talk, end] Roland zh (talk) 02:41, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Amy, you're welcome, in general no problem. Please also read the link to the user talk above mentioned. Maybe you're interested to watch my edits some minutes ago as kind hint to avoid further mistakes for that i personally feel fully compression and, of course, occure to me too :-) Please excuse my written English, so that some expressions for 'English-Mother-tongued' Wikipedians may occur missunderstandings i appologize for. Kindly regards, Roland zh (talk) 02:41, 26 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, as pointed before, some categories have been tagged as {categorize}, therefore p.e. that edit, [1] [2] etc (as of June 24, 2014) have been fixed. Please also check once again Commons:categories and avoid so-called "over-categorization", among them categories of countries, cities etc. Best regards, Roland zh (talk) 18:38, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi lisa.davis, once more, as pointed before, please do not overcategorize again and again and avoid to use categories tagged by {categorize}. imho it's also recommended to tag media showing children with the template {personality rights}. thx, Roland zh (talk) 18:12, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, i really hope for the very last time referring to categorization, quotation AmyNorth (as of February 2014):

I read the commons categories. I made mistakes on many images. I was trying to help with "uncategorized images", and "over-categorized" many. It must have been a lot of work for you to undo what I did. Will be careful next time.

Yes it's still 'work' that should not have been done again: On June 26 and 28, 2014, imho about 50 more above mentioned 'mistakes' occured again and again – and i was really not 'searching' for – just related to Category:Karnataka, Category:Kerala, Category:Tamil Nadu i usually take care of the subcategories :-(( Please 'improve' asap your categorizations, thx, Roland zh (talk) 18:28, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Roland zh - I left you a message on your page (see below). I have not added anything to the highest level category Karnataka, Kerala or Tamil Nadu. I only added to lowest level category fit I could find. Can you identify 1 or 2 files that I added to Category:Karnataka, Category:Kerala or Category:Tamil Nadu? ==No harrasment please==
Hi Roland zh,
I am a cancer patient, who tries to spend her time productively, rather than feeling sorry for my condition. I was introduced to wiki by Lisa here, thankfully, and I think you should not confuse me with her. She sometimes uses the wireless network here, but I do not know if she has been on wikipedia lately because she has been traveling for a while.
On your categorization comments, I already avoid over-cat'ing, to the best of my ability. There are 1000s of categories, and it is impossible to remember all of them. Yes, I may make an error once in a while. If I do, just revert it, or nominate that the file be deleted, or re-cat it. To err is human.
I use Magnus' bot to set categories when I upload files. Sometimes that bot does not work, for some reason or bug. It leaves the category empty. Again, if someone makes a mistake, or a bot introduces errors, just fix it.
If you have created a wiki "tool" to know and select categories more accurately, or you know of someone else who has, please point me to the page. I will try to improve. I only want to help.
Good health to you,
{moved from my talk, as started here, quotation start:}

Hi, thank you for your feedback and i really regret your illness. not quite the same for me but i'm an old men with not good health 'spending' some time in favour of Wikimedia Foundation and some other charities. Referring to your question: p.e. [3], [4], [5] a few minutes ago, the last referring to Category:Andhra Pradesh also on my watch list since about 2008. Finally best regards, good health and God with you, Roland zh (talk) 19:02, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Roland zh - Take the first example [6] you give me as you allege my mistakes. I used Category:Education in Karnataka, I did not use Category:Karnataka.

You scolded me above and you changed it to Category:Schools in Bangalore.

But, there is nothing in the source that says the school is in Bangalore. How do you know it is a school in Bangalore? Is Nagasandra another name for Bangalore. I doubt it, but I am not Indian, so how would I know. Regardless, how should I or anyone know?

Please explain why you changed it Schools in Bangalore - what is in the source image that supports that category?

Similarly, in the other two examples you give, I did not use the highest level Category:Kerala or Category:Tamil Nadu. I used a much lower category. Please quit accusing me of doing something I did not do. AmyNorth (talk) 19:23, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, imho we had that 'discussion' before, as well in February 2014 and before, ... quotation:
Hi, as pointed before, some categories have been tagged as {categorize}, therefore p.e. that edit, [1] [2] etc (as of June 24, 2014) have been fixed..
Finally no accusing or harassments etc, p.e. among that, btw categorized in 2012, please let's end here and now ;-) Finally regards, Roland zh (talk) 19:41, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Roland zh: - You did not answer my question, even though you made a rude accusation: Please explain why you changed it the category for [7] to Category:Schools in Bangalore - what is in the source image that supports that category? Please answer. I want to learn from you.
I want to end this, but I ask you to stop harassing me. As I humbly requested before: Yes, I do make an error once in a while. To err is human. If I do err, just revert it, or nominate that the file be deleted, or re-cat it. If there are better tools, give me a link, and I will try to learn and be better. Wiki is a community effort. You should assume good faith and try to appreciate new volunteers like me. Please stop harassing and being mean to me. AmyNorth (talk) 20:00, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@AmyNorth: hi, File:A Primary School in Village Nagasandra Karnataka India.jpg = Category:Schools in Bangalore district, btw already fixed by me before you asked again. And really, as mentioned here before, usually i really do assume good faith, as you imho remarked before, see quotation of your message in February 2014, Roland zh (talk) 20:08, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Roland zh: - Why did you put File:A Primary School in Village Nagasandra Karnataka India.jpg in Category:Schools in Bangalore? Is there anything in the flickr source file to suggest that school is in Bangalore? See this map - Nagasandra seems quite far from Bangalore. AmyNorth (talk) 20:44, 28 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
File:Aerial view of Bajra Sandhi Monument Denpasar Bali Indonesia.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Notice of upload removal[edit]

Dear AmyNorth:

The Wikimedia Foundation (“Wikimedia”) has taken down content that you posted at File:A village in Gandaki, Annapurna Range, Nepal.jpg due to Wikimedia’s receipt of a validly formulated notice that your posted content was infringing an existing copyright. When someone sends us a validly formulated notice of copyright infringement, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”) Section (c)(1)(C) requires Wikimedia to take the content down, and to notify you that we have removed that content. This notice, by itself, does not mean that the party requesting that the content be taken down are suing you. The party requesting the take down might only be interested in removing the content from our site.

What Can You Do?

You are not obligated to take any action. However, if you feel that your content does not infringe upon any copyrights, you may contest the take down request by submitting a ‘counter notice’ to Wikimedia. Before doing so, you should understand your legal position, and you may wish to consult with an attorney. If you choose to submit a counter notice, the alleged copyright holder can either refuse to contest the counter notice or decide to file a lawsuit against you to restrain Wikimedia from re-posting the content. Please note that Wikimedia will not be a party to any legal action that arises from you sending a counter notice, and that Wikimedia is unable to provide you with legal advice.

Filing a Counter Notice

If you choose to submit a counter notice, you must send a letter asking Wikimedia to restore your content to legal@wikimedia.org, or to our service processor at the following address: Wikimedia Foundation, c/o CT Corporation System, 818 West Seventh Street, Los Angeles, California, 90017. The letter must comply with DMCA standards, set out in Section (g)(3)(A-D), and must contain the following:

  • A link to where the content was before we took it down and a description of the material that was removed;
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good faith belief that the content was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled;
  • Your name, address, and phone number;
  • If your address is in the United States, a statement that says “I consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the district where my address is located, and I will accept service of process from the person who complained about the content I posted”; alternatively, if your address is outside the United States, a statement that says “I agree to accept service of process in any jurisdiction where the Wikimedia Foundation can be found, and I will accept service of process from the person who complained about the content I posted”; and finally,
  • Your physical or electronic signature.

Pursuant to the DMCA, Wikimedia must inform the alleged copyright holder that you sent us a counter notice, and give the alleged copyright holder a copy of the counter notice. The alleged copyright holder will then have fourteen (14) business days to file a lawsuit against you to restrain Wikimedia from reposting the content. If Wikimedia does not receive proper notification that the alleged copyright holder has initiated such a lawsuit against you, we will repost your content within ten (10) to fourteen (14) business days.

Miscellaneous

As a matter of policy and under appropriate circumstances, Wikimedia will block the accounts of repeat infringers as provided by Section 512(i)(1)(A) of the DMCA.

If you would like to learn more about Wikimedia’s policies, please refer to the Wikimedia Terms of Use, available at Terms of use, and the Wikimedia Legal Policies, available at m:Legal/Legal_Policies. More information on DMCA compliance may also be found at:

Wikimedia appreciates your support. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions regarding this notice.

Sincerely, Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 08:08, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the required form notice above, I want to just add a personal note to let you know that we recognize that you uploaded this image in a good faith belief that the Flickr uploader had rights to license the image. --Maggie Dennis (WMF) (talk) 08:08, 23 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Silpa Sastra has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
