Rollback given[edit]

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Commons:Rollback. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. 4nn1l2 (talk) 07:40, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Alexmar983: I am not sure why I got this message. I never subscribed to this newsletter nor I speak Toskana language. Masum Reza📞 08:52, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You uploaded an image for Wiki Loves Monuments in Tuscany. As an expert user, you know that you don't have to subscribe, you can be inserted in a mass message as long as it is clearly indicated the link where you can unsuscribe the first time you recieve it (otherwise I have to ask you if you want to subscribe, and that would still be one mail, so that's more practical). You can check with google translator, it detects the language automatically (the language is Italian). --Alexmar983 (talk) 10:08, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexmar983: Oh great. I recieved this message as I cropped an image which was uploaded by someone else. Other than that I don't see any activity of mine on that category. Someone really need to fix that tool. Well, I can't really fix what happened in the past. It would be a lot better if you check the uploaders' edits first who have low upload count to file pages within the category. Masum Reza📞 19:12, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Last year I did not include people with just on image, this year I did because few ones were actually relevant and there were much more single uploader this year. Copying and pasting manually takes minutes, I cannot check everyone especially when I am organizing an award ceremony. Talking in general the best option for the crop tool if used for minor cropping is the superposition instead of a separate upload, and that one should not show any effect on the stats in the tool, as far as I know and I checked years ago. So as far as I know, i was sending messages to effective uploaders of Wiki Loves Monuments who actually uploaded the images on an Italian interface so they shoulnd't find bizare to receive a message about such competition in such language.
On a more general level, commons is a multilingual platform, you will receive soon or later messages in other languages, if it happens just use google translator or bing translator like I do. I receive mass messages for random reasons here on there on many platforms. In my experience, there is always some overlap that does not work perfectly with my goals and targets, but it's mostly anglophone users which think about it as a big deal, it has to do with a perception also of the pages as a personal space which is a big deal on enwikipedia as far as i remember but not everywhere. The most functional behavior is simply to remove the name from the list and don't overthink too much. Without this agreement mass message couldn't work. It's a balance of pro and cons, in the end. And please notice this an accurate mass message it includes the signature, the list of targeted users and even the discussion where it was decided. Some people just click and send.--Alexmar983 (talk) 20:31, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Re: About the recent rollback[edit]

Because I don't want any user rights at all--Kai3952 (talk) 10:06, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Kai3952: You will be able to enable COM:VFC if you have autopatrol right. Also COM:Cat-a-lot helps a lot in categorizing files. I see that you have been adding categories by hand. Why not do batch-edit and mass-add/remove them instead? Masum Reza📞 10:43, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly, you are annoying! Why do you not contribute your time to Wikimedia Commons? I don't need you to tell me what to do. I'm gonna to work the way I wanna to.--Kai3952 (talk) 19:55, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: Oh sorry if I was being annoying. I feel sorry that you suffered such road accident. It must be very hard for you to keep contributing to Commons. Despite all of this, you contribute your time to Wikimedia Commons, which is the most valuable thing in the world. I just wanted to suggest a faster way. Unlike you I am pretty lazy you know. :) Thanks for adding categorizing those files by the way. I go through your contributions list everyday, and I can't help but be surprised. Anyway thanks again for your contributions. Looking forward to working with you. Masum Reza📞 20:21, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: is it a problem for you if we mark your account for autopatrol for us? It won't be for you, it's just to make the life of patrollers a little easier. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:23, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: Do NOT force me to do things that I don't want to do!--Kai3952 (talk) 07:55, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: nobody asked you to do anything. What you are going on about about respect below, I don't have a clue. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 19:03, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: Nobody? Looking at what you said: "is it a problem for you if we mark your account for autopatrol for us?" You asked me to accept that you mark my account for autopatrol. If I don't accept it, then I will become what you say "problem". Why are you forcing me to do what I don't want to?--Kai3952 (talk) 20:06, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: You misunderstand. I asked if it would be a problem for you if we did. Apparently the answer is yes. But what if you weren't given a choice? Would that have been better? You wouldn't have had to accept anything if you hadn't been asked. When I was made autopatrolled, nobody told me, which is not uncommon. I didn't notice any difference. You won't be made autopatrolled, but there's nothing to "accept". There is no responsibility, no expectations. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 20:24, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: You have wasted me a lot of time. What you said makes me feel that you want to quarrel with me. If you have any questions about me, such as I refused my account to be marked "autopatrol", I would suggest that you to bring the issue to COM:AN.--Kai3952 (talk) 21:18, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you wouldn't have a clue about respect, I would suggest that today you go to your parents and you ask this question: “What is respect?”--Kai3952 (talk) 21:21, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: you're wasting everyone's time. You could have just said you do have an issue with autopatrol even when it's not assigned for your benefit. Instead, you picked a fight. By telling me to ask my parents something, you've just given away how young you are. Because you can't know whether or not my parents are alive. And most older people realize just how disrespectful such a question can be before they ask that. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:35, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz: You say that I am wasting everyone's time? Oh, I see. You are hinting that I should take the initiative to leave Wikimedia Commons. So, you admit that you are forcing me to accept the autopatrol right? If not, why you would want to pick a fight with me? You should contribute your time to Wikimedia Commons, because the way to stop wasting everyone's time is up to you. Further, I did not come to your talk page. Instead, you came here to asked me: “is it a problem for you if we mark your account for autopatrol for us?”--Kai3952 (talk) 10:43, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kai3952: I admit nothing and I'm sick of you twisting my words. I asked if it would be a problem for you, you twist it and pretend I'm saying you are/become a problem. I say you picked a fight (which you clearly did), you say I picked a fight. There was never any reason to oppose the autopatrol flag, and when you decided to oppose it anyway you could have done so in a calm and controlled manner, but instead we got.. this. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 10:58, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Alexis Jazz:
  1. Twisting? Who care about you! Just like you have been forcing me that to accept the autopatrol right, who care about me?! I have reminded you that stop wasting time on me. Because I don't want any user rights at all. Can you not let it go? I don't think in a calm and controlled manner that would have been much use, since you picked a fight with me again and again. If you could stop being annoying, then I'll be calm and controlled.
  2. I noticed what you wrote in the edit summary. If you really think that I have personal problem, I can explain it to you: Yes, as I am coming to realise, the problem with myself is I always choose to work the way I want to. This has nothing to do with my road accident, because I am not on meds. If we think it ain't worth it, then I'll say: "We should not live for others, but we also should not live for ourselves alone!"--Kai3952 (talk) 14:32, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If a person does not have autopatrol and make large number of changes, something like this happens.
  • Somebody would have patrol their edits and those patrol actions would be logged. and those logs take up unnecessary diskspace. For example, you have 344744 edits at the moment. Patrolling all of them means 344744 log actions. That many of actions take up unnecessary disk space.
  • Also waste of power (electricity) to run the computer, data connection (internet), and time.
Autopatrol also makes the edit, upload, and move rate limit higher meaning you will be able to edit much much faster. But again that is your decision to make, I just wanted to make a suggestion. :) Masum Reza📞 20:30, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Masumrezarock100: If you are blaming me, you can bring the issue to COM:AN. I am not obliged to do what you say.--Kai3952 (talk) 21:18, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Masumrezarock100 and Alexis Jazz: If everyone comes here for the purpose of volunteering to contribute to Wikimedia Commons, why can we not each respect each other? Is it difficult to respect? And that is what I think that Alexis Jazz says "problem". I hope that will defuse the pointless argument over it.--Kai3952 (talk) 08:35, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I get it. How about this? You wouldn't have autopatrol right but your contributions would be automatically patrolled by a bot. I think it would make our (patrollers) life easier. DannyS712's bot automatically patrols redirects on English Wikipedia. I think it could do the same to trusted non-autopatrollers contributions here. @~riley: , as an administrator, do you have any thoughts on the matter? Masum Reza📞 09:13, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping... if I understand correctly, you're asking if a bot (mine) could automatically patrol the edits of a user? Should be pretty simple --DannyS712 (talk) 09:15, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that's exactly what I am asking. The task needs to be approved by local BAG though. Masum Reza📞 09:16, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
RileyBot already has a script written to do this, I am happy to put it to trial. If the user refuses the right, this is an appropriate alternative. ~riley (talk) 17:29, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@~riley: Recent patrols by rileybot looks good. But you said you won't be accepting new tasks anymore to avoid script conflicts. Are you sure your bot can handle them? Masum Reza📞 23:55, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That is out of date and either way, this is a simple script that would run off a crontab. Alternatively, RyanBot (My other bot) has the capacity to run the task. ~riley (talk) 01:38, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

--User:Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:04, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Martin, I don't think I will be able to do this. I am not really a programmer you see nor I am a good mentor. By the way, may I ask which page I edited on Commons that triggered this message? Masum Reza📞 23:08, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. It was [1], [2] or [3] (and a few others). --Martin Urbanec (talk) 23:15, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it doesn't look like they are related to code review in any way. I might be wrong though. :) Masum Reza📞 23:20, 23 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Masumrezarock100, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Easier nomination for rights[edit]

That's what I was going for.. (the other stuff I was testing in userspace) But there's a bit of an issue. mw:Extension:InputBox allows creation of a new page (which we probably don't want but would solve the issue) and creation of a new section. (which seems okay, we'd just need pages for each rights group)

But when creating a new section, there seems to be no way to aquire the user input and insert it into the wikitext. It's just the section title. While I can go fishing in the pagename, I can't do anything with the section title. I can preload a page, but can't do anything with the user input for that. I can use preloadparams, but those are also static. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:06, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Creating pages for each rights might not be a good idea as it would be hard to monitor all of them IMOH. We don't get that many requests as enwiki's PERM and admins here are usually pretty active in handling RFRs. How about creating a script to easily nominate for RFRs/LRRs/RFAs? Masum Reza📞 13:17, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I suck at scripting anything.. I just need an inputbox and some way of using the contents of that as a variable, but that's like the holy grail. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:30, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Following your message you are right: image has been shot before the subject's death(!) so 1955. Thanks for your vigilance. Kind regards, --Patrick Rogel (talk) 16:59, 26 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Patrick Rogel: Thanks for your reply but I don't think you should reply at my talk page since I am the one who left you a message. This gives the false impression that you are ignoring your talk page messages. Please keep discussions in one place. If someone leaves you a message on your talk page, you should reply there, prepend the message with {{Ping}} template and sign it to notify the person (like I did here). Why did you revert me?[edit]

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Commons:Help_desk&oldid=prev&diff=378428884

Yes, it is nonsense, and it was part of the text of the previous comment. Clearly it needed to be reworded by the person who posted it. Since we are not supposed to edit other people's remarks, this was entirely appropriate for me to point out. - Jmabel ! talk 17:14, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: I just wanted to remove that "Ciao" section. That IP was probably a troll. After that revert I realized that you posted a comment to another section so I reverted my edits (see the next diff) and then manually removed "Ciao" section. Feel free to revert if you think I did something wrong. Masum Reza📞 17:23, 29 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
