The eye[edit]

Brilliant vector diagram with clickable links. I had never seen one before on wikipedia. Is it possible to say what software you used? /Is there a guide? I did read your guides at the start of this page (and learnt some new tricks). My abilities? HTML fine XML a bit. Understand how wmf files work. Thanks anyway Victuallers 11:14, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! I used w:Inkscape. You will find an useful guide here (as well as at some other internet places). About the clickable links, I did not know that it was possible, bot in the en.wiki nomination for FP Pengo suggested using this tool for creating clickable imagemaps, that are coded in text form independently of the image (see the result). Hope this answers your question :)Chabacano 23:02, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm sure this answer is going to take me "a while" to work on, but that I suspect is because its a very complete answer, Thanks! Victuallers 17:07, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Geograph images[edit]

Hi. Please don't mark Geograph images with Flickreview. It only confuses the bot. Patstuart (talk) 13:01, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

2 images not uploaded by bot[edit]

Hello. I've noticed these two images that you tried to upload using Flickr upload bot: Image:Choir stalls wSt Oswald's Church, AshbourneSt Oswalds Asbourne and Image:Choir stalls Ashbourne. There seems to be a problem as they didn't upload, so you might want to contact the bot's operator Bryan to resolve the problem. --Kimse 23:23, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Joseph Wright of Derby[edit]

Thanks for uploading the images by Joseph Wright of Derby - they are great costume references. It looks like the categories Joseph Wright and Joseph Wright of Derby refer to the same artist - perhaps they should be folded together? - PKM (talk) 19:22, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it much matters since we don't have two Joseph Wrights in the Commons. Since he's English and the English Wikipedia uses "Joseph Wright of Derby" I'd say use that and redirect Joseph Wright there. If someone else named Joseph Wright comes up in the future, we can change the redirect. - PKM (talk) 17:17, 16 June 2008 (UTC)

NPG images[edit]

Much as I support ignoring the NPG's dubious copyright notices, you might want to think about cropping images so as to remove them, before uploading? Image:Sir John Maynard mw04344.jpg refers. --Tagishsimon (talk) 15:33, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

BEAUVOISIN images[edit]

Hello,

You 've made some images of my [village in France] that you call BOISVOISIN ! The real name is ""BEAUVOISIN"" . You say also <<.....near Vaunert>>, in the reality this town is call VAUVERT... You can find info on :[WIKI for BEAUVOISIN]

You speak about "Graffiti" in fact this artefact is call in french pochoir and it is a tradition in south of France (specially in the camargue) that is call on a local level Empègues [|Les EMPEGUES ]

Can you rectify it? Thank you RuB (talk) 21:52, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Derbyshire[edit]

I do have a suggestion actually. I found those images using the wikimedia commons layer of google earth, so you should be able to find the names using that. I thought the rename bot fixed the links - I guess I was wrong. As for how many I renamed, it was between 10 and 20 I think. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:31, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure what you expect me to do. I can give you the new names, but I can't tell you what articles they were removed from, you'd need to get logs from commonsdelinker for that. Also, try searching for the names - renamed images should include "This image was moved from Image:Risley 073234 3897cf4d.jpg" or something -mattbuck (Talk) 16:38, 18 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Victuallers!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Towns and villages in Derbyshire[edit]

Could you add any of your future images and categories of the towns and villages in Derbyshire (like Category:Shottle) to the Category:Towns and villages in Derbyshire rather than Category:Derbyshire. Thanks. Oneblackline (talk) 16:44, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Some feedback on cropping[edit]

Hi Victuallers - I noticed you've done a lot of extracting of images of people from paintings featuring multiple people. Although this is a valuable activity, good cropping is a bit of an art, as it involves composition. Your crops, like File:Francesco Bartolozzi.jpg, tend to be too tight - they don't show enough context, and they center the subject in the frame. I'm not a professional, but you can see examples of a few of my better crops here:

General tips:

  • Give the subject "space to look into" - include more space in the direction in which they're looking.
  • Include their hair and some of their clothing, usually down to the middle of the chest or more. Really tight face crops are only really appropriate either for small icons, or when the source image shows only their face.
  • It's good to have lines pointing towards the corners.
  • Crop the shoulders just where they start to turn downwards.
  • rule of thirds

I hope this helps. :-) Dcoetzee (talk) 22:20, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Drakelowe Hall[edit]

Thanks. I was really struck by that photo when I first saw it. I only wish there were more old photographs as wonderful as this one. I guess then, like now, there are some really gifted photographers. I am always amazed by the generally high quality of photographs on wikipedia, and especially the photograph of the day. Samuel Oshoffa[edit]

Hello

The category Samuel Oshoffa was unrelevant : no picture of Samuel Oshoffa in it, but six pictures only slighty related to him (and which are already in the category:Celestial Church of Christ). Please do not create such blank categories. Chaoborus (talk) 21:41, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Ancient Roman coins[edit]

I use: (Category:Ancient Roman coins)

  1. kind of coin: denarius, aureus ...
  2. period: pre-denarius, Republican, imperiatorial (at moment without a category), imperial & byzantine
  3. some special cat for some coins: restitution coins, coins of Caesar
  4. every single element in the coin: gods, animals...

More information?

--Carlomorino (talk) 16:14, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

The problem (to me) is not to put a coin in the right category but to have a good description:

  1. where is the picture from
  2. what is in on the other side
  3. what kind of metal
  4. ....

How's that mass transfer coming? --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:18, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for asking Magnus. I was away for the weekend. I left some messages for the owners on Flickr to see if we could get some cataloguing information that might tell us more about the pictures and make sure they we well categorised. However, no reply. I'm thinking of having a go tomorrow. Do I need to register with the "mass transfer people" or just DO it?

I'm guessing you may be able to help me delete the lot if it turns out badly :-) Victuallers (talk) 14:17, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I made a request to add a category to some of your uploads (see Commons:Bots/Work_requests#Adding_a_category_.28PAS.29). This to get categorization on [1] started.  Docu  at 13:27, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Nickmard[edit]

I had asked for Nickmard's permission to upload some of his Persian Empire images last year. His only condition was that he be fully named--in person--in any image files which I did here He has that right since he took the photos. He would ask the same of you too if you sent him a flickrmail for some of his photos I believe. Goodnight from Canada, --Leoboudv (talk) 08:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Flickr license question[edit]

I requested the use of this image, since there is currently no Facel Vega Excellence photo available to Wikimedia.

My question is whether copyright holder pontfire's comment (vous pouvez prendre les photos pour wikipedia) is enough for me to upload it, or if I should ask him to change the license? And thanks for reviewing Flickr images! Mr.choppers (talk) 13:36, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Discussion[edit]

As you must surely know I am banned from en. I have an account here, and on meta, of course. I wanted to open up a discussion on the charitable status, and particularly on the 'control and monitoring' aspect that Stone King refer to in their press release. I don't see how WMUK can possibly control and monitor Wikipedia effectively. Given that discussions on wiki tend quickly to turn into anarchy, I would like to agree a process for dealing with my questions. I propose:

  1. I put together a document clarifying my difficulties with WMUK having charitable status under the principle of 'public utility'.
  2. I send this to you or some nominated person to read through.
  3. You send this back with comments
  4. We meet at WMUK offices to talk through any remaining issues. Such issues might be remedial action to align WMUK activities with 'public utility'.
  5. If this fails, and I feel that there is still a problem with the charitable status, I will take this up directly with UK charity commission.
  6. Happy for all of this to be made public

Does that work as a plan? Let me know, either here or at my talk page. Peter Damian (talk) 09:34, 27 November 2011 (UTC)

  • Hello Peter, last things first. Obviously this is public as anyone can view this talk page and its license is not very restrictive. I'm guessing that you do not want my opinion but an official one from the WMUK board. I'll try and find one. Victuallers (talk) 15:02, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
    • I meant 1-5 should be in private, but potentially made public. I am asking if you can agree to a process, on the lines of 1-5 above, where I challenge the board on compliance with the charitable status thing, and the board responds. So, first question is would the board agree to such a process? Peter Damian (talk) 15:36, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
    • Any documentation supporting the original application, and any terms and conditions imposed by Charity Commission would be useful to see, if it is allowed to be made public. Peter Damian (talk) 15:38, 27 November 2011 (UTC)
I think this is being discussed on the WMUK wiki which is probably the best place. Openness is not a problem unless we have a real reason to respect privacy/ legal etc. As for finding time then that is tricky as we already ask too much of our volunteers and you are asking them to contribute more time for your benefit. However the best place to discuss is on WMUK. Victuallers (talk) 04:22, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

It seems as though openness is a definite problem[edit]

See my repeated questions on the WMUK page. Just one question. Did WMUK mention the BLP problem in its reply to questions from UK CC? If it did, what did it say? Peter Damian (talk) 20:32, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Category: Rubens Arthur Moore and the image of the artist, which is referred to on this page.[edit]

I was surprised to find the page "Category: Rubens Arthur Moore" but after reading your message about the image of the artist and its subsequent deletion, realize it was probably generated as a category for the image. The category is probably not required, now there is no content but, if it is to be retained, it should not be a sub-category of "Category: 1920 deaths"; Reuben (his given name) died on 4th May 1933. I do not know which image was uploaded, if it was a black and white one, then it was taken before the original picture was donated to the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery, in 1991. I am disappointed that the image is not freely available. It was my intention to donate the original portrait for enjoyment of the public in general; Nottingham Castle Museum seemed to be the most appropriate place at the time. It seems unfair that there is a restriction in copying it (or any public domain works of art). There should be potential for making profit out of reproducing it, anyway, by competitively producing good quality copies. Monmouth map[edit]

Hi Victuallers, is it possible to create a map similar to File:Monmouth.png in Hindi? Can you do that? I can provide translations. I think your work deserves to be a featured list. Its one of the best articles on MonmouthpediA. Oh wouuld you have a look at my en talk page? You don't need to understand any templates, just create and upload a map similar to File:Monmouth.png in Hindi. Meaning, replace locations in English to Hindi. Other things in article I can handle. Can you specifically tell me which museum are you referring? because you're English Wiki talk page is way too large to find it. Re:[edit]

Hi Victuallers, the main issue is that, without proper source information, it's really impossible to assert something is in the public domain. Mr. Chipulina can be a nice writer (he's indeed) but he's not possibly a reliable source. However, as the issues with the set of pictures are quite different depending on the picture, I think I'll open a deletion nomination so that the community can provide arguments to make specific decisions with each of the pictures. Best regards --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 09:24, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I think it's better to sort it out as a whole. There's a deletion nomination in Commons:Deletion requests/Gibraltarpedia images. Best regards --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 23:00, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

Category:Victoria_Duvals[edit]

Category discussion warning

Category:Victoria_Duvals has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi Victuallers, could you point at where the discussion is being held? Are such images identified (by means, for example, of a hidden category)? Thanks --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 11:10, 22 November 2012 (UTC) PS: I've created Category:Images from DiscoverGibraltar.com, but I haven't labeled all the involved images. It'd be good if you do it. PS: could you tell Jim he to explicitly mention CC-BY-SA 3.0 and link to the license

BTW, the problem with TheNML (talk · contribs) uploads is that he's using a non-free license in flickr and there's no way to assert that he's the same person here and in flickr and, on the other hand, which license is right. The easiest way to proceed would be to let him know that a proper CC-BY-SA license in flickr would be enough. Otherwise, they's be possibly deleted, as the one you've mentioned to INeverCry. Best regards --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 12:42, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

On the other hand, the issue with images such as this is that Jim Crown is not the owner of the copyright of the images, but Tito Vallejo. Does he agree to give them under a CC-BY-SA license? --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 12:47, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Gibraltar Caves[edit]

Hi Victuallers, I've found finally the license information in the source web site (it seems it does not work with Firefox): here.

Some tips that would be useful for next times:

On the other hand, the underground-gibraltar.com licensing information seems to be slightly odd. I mean, they claim to use a CC-BY-SA license, but... is there any reason not to say which version of the license they're using? Moreover, the text included in the page is a verbatim copy of here, but removing a key sentence "to make commercial use of the work". Isn't that more simple just to link to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/? Best regards --Ecemaml talk to me/habla conmigo 23:21, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

File:Geoffrey monmouth.jpg[edit]

Hi, Victuallers. I've been worrying about this file, and maybe you can put my mind at rest. You list the author as "architect", by which I assume you mean the architect of the Monmouth priory church, but since this is a stained glass window the architect would surely have had nothing to do with it. Do you know who designed the glass? I worry about this because it looks none too ancient to my eye. Could it be one panel of the window designed in 1938 by B. F. L. Clarke according to w:en:St Mary's Priory Church, Monmouth#Interior? You also describe it as "Not Geoffrey of Monmouth but said to be in Priory church in Monmouth". That leads me to wonder who it actually is supposed to represent and who said it came from the priory church. The source you got the image from doesn't seem to answer any of these questions. --Antiquary (int:Talkpagelinktext) 17:41, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I don't think I have more information than you have found. I guess I wrote "not" because he died some time ago. Architects can specify the designs of glass but I m not sure what happened in this case. I guess FOP doesnt apply so hopefully this was made by a (long) dead artist.
