Just wanted to let you know this is a recurring problem. You can expect around one or two of these a day. See my deleted contributions. Almost all of those files were uploaded by the same LTA. If you check the SUL of the uploader you should see a sock/CheckUser block on enwiki. Kind regards, MusikAnimal talk 18:29, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

File:Hunters w Dall Sheep 1953 FWS.jpg[edit]

Hi - I can't tell from the history if this has just been deleted and replaced with a redirect, or whether it happened earlier and you merely updated the redirect. However whenever it happened the original FWS sourcing information was lost. Since you are an admin, you can retrieve it. The image-scraping site FAE uploaded from systematically removes image provenance. The version I previously uploaded directly from the FWS site had the original URL and possibly additional information (I cant tell exactly what at this point, since it is deleted). This could (should) be ported to the newer version. Thanks,Dankarl (talk) 01:59, 4 October 2019 (UTC)

User talk:Ravenpuff[edit]

Hi Taivo, seems weird that you gave a reason of orphaned talk page for deleting a user talk page when majority of user talks are orphans. (Talk/留言/토론/Discussion) 06:33, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

This is a bit my mistake. Ravenpuff nominated own user talkpage for speedy deletion. Usually user talkpages are not deleted, but it was empty anyway and there was nothing important in its history, so I decided to delete. Usually wiki software gives standard reason "user request in own userspace", but not when deleting user talkpages. So I choosed next possibility "orphaned talkpage", but I should add "user request in own userspace" as additional reason. Taivo (talk) 08:07, 5 October 2019 (UTC)

Category:Margaretha (Swedish princess 1934)[edit]

Hello! Why did you delete that redirect? 09.56 this morning. The new category name is absolutely inapproprite (se talk there) .--SergeWoodzing (talk) 12:35, 15 October 2019 (UTC)

English Wikipedia has also article en:Princess Margaretha, Mrs. Ambler. In my opinion "Swedish princess 1934" is incorrect, it should consist word "born". Taivo (talk) 12:54, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
If a person is born a prince or princess and the year of birth is included, that is not wrong. And "The" - NOTE: "The" - Mrs Ambler which is in the new category name is supposed to be correct?! I'd rather haver a correct status at birth than a ridiculous invention like that. --SergeWoodzing (talk) 07:56, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
OK, you can discuss that with @ImperialArchivesRU: , who renamed the category, and give a new name without "the". Taivo (talk) 08:10, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Escudo UD Almeria.png[edit]

Hello, I'm very upset with your attitude in the discussion about deleting the above mentioned file (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Escudo_UD_Almeria.png) It is very arrogant and dictatorial to write your comment and close the discussion and delete the file without letting others continue to give their opinion. The figure you mention without knowing what it is, is called "Indalo", and is the symbol of the city of Almeria (Spain). In this cave symbol is based the crest of the club Almeria, a symbol that is in the public domain. I would ask you please to reopen the discussion page to add this answer which must be taken into consideration as well as to allow other opinions without arbitrary decisions. Thank you. Almju | Contacta conmigo 14:34, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, I did not want to seem arrogant. But I am convinced, that my closure was correct. I do not reopen the deletion request. Normally the request lasts one week and everybody has enough time to say his/her arguments. After that the request is closed. Now you say, that the logo is partly in public domain due to age! I do not believe it anyway, the club was created in 1989 and logos are copyrighted 80 years in Spain (sometimes more). Taivo (talk) 15:34, 16 October 2019 (UTC)

deletion requests[edit]

Hi Taivo,

Please delete as soon as possible those 3 remaining pictures. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 07:57, 19 October 2019 (UTC)

No. Once I declined the speedy deletion request and I do not want to take second opinion. I am not the only administrator. Majora declined the requests as well and created a regular deletion request for everyone of the 3 remaining pictures. I am quite happy with his decision. Taivo (talk) 14:39, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

Bogaerts workshop.[edit]

Hello Taivo, here : [2] : ‘This is in contradiction with your earlier statements about the image. See also this document: "Portretschilderijen gemaakt door Hubert Bogaerts" by Ronald Anckaert. Gouwenaar (Overleg) 05:57, 18 October 2019 (UTC)’ User Gouwenaar mentionned the real-life full name of a private person in a Commons discussion. Isn't this an invasion of the privacy of this person ? --Ronny MG (talk) 05:42, 20 October 2019 (UTC)

@Ronny MG: Gouwenaar mentioned this name as author of relevant text and it is always allowed. For example, if something is published under CC-BY license, then mentioning author's name is obligatory. This text was published under unknown license, maybe all rights reserved, but nevertheless using author's name is allowed. Taivo (talk) 07:24, 21 October 2019 (UTC)

About your decision not to delete File:Blason de Lesquin.png[edit]

Hi,

I wished to discuss the deletion of File:Blason de Lesquin.png, which you chose not to delete after Commons:Deletion requests/File:Blason de Lesquin.png. Given that the file is mine, unused, and replaced by File:Blason de la ville de Lesquin (Nord).svg, I do not understand that decision. Would you be so kind as to explain it to me? You said "the file is used", but it wasn't?...

Best regards, Esprit Fugace (talk) 18:35, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

The file isn't used anymore (it was when I closed the request) and I'll delete it. Taivo (talk) 18:46, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

File:ASC Leiden - van de Bruinhorst Collection - Somaliland 2019 - 4726 - Somali National television. A screen with a bespectacled speaker and microphones addressing the public at another book fair, July 2019.jpg[edit]

Dear Taivo,

1. You deleted this file without a proper discussion i would like to have had beforehand. Please do not delete without a discussion with a proven honest uploader.
2. Why deletion? It is just a television screen which could in theory be watched worldwide, published widely in public. It is like a photograph of a street, perhaps including posters, statues and so on. Are television screen images copyrighted?
3. But then Somalia did not sign the Berne convention (neither did Somaliland, where the screen was photographed) so in any case standard international copyright customs etcetera do not apply automatically in Somalia, or in Somaliland. Please explain, thanks Hansmuller (talk) 10:47, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Obvious copyright violations can be deleted without discussion, even when the uploader is proven honest user. Television screen images are protected with copyright, even if they are widely published. Photographs of streets with posters and statues can be deleted in Commons as well, it depends on local copyright law. Usually all content of Commons must be free in two countries: source country and USA. Seems like Somalia is here an exception, because it has no established copyright law. And if Somalia did not sign Bern convention, then USA is not important. I'll restore the image, but here you can see, how important is to give correct license. You gave incorrect CC-license and the screenshot got deleted without delay. You should give a correct {{PD-Somalia}} license. Taivo (talk) 11:44, 31 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your fairness! Cordially, Hansmuller (talk) 16:01, 1 November 2019 (UTC) ( @Vysotsky )

Speedy closure of deletion request[edit]

Hi Taivo. Can you please speedily close this deletion request? The rationale is invalid as it assumes that uncopyrighted US works must also be out of copyright in the home country of the person who took the photo. Thanks. AlbanGeller (talk) 18:52, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Not done. Although the photo should probably be kept, I do not want to close the request speedily. The problem is that first publication is unknown. It was probably in USA without copyright notice, but this is not proven. At moment I'd like to keep the request open for one week. Taivo (talk) 19:07, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

A Concern to Make[edit]

So recently I added an image to show how the Northern California PSPS Power Shutoffs looked on the morning of October 28, 2019 on the page File:NorCal PSPS Power Shutoffs on October 28, 2019.png and you deleted it apparently because of copyright violations. I don't see how my image violated any copyright rules regarding it was my own screenshot I took on that website and didn't get the image from Google or any news sources. Could you tell me what exactly the concern was and what I should do about it/how I should get it back now that it's deleted? EagerBeaverPJ (talk) 17:51, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

It was screenshot of Google maps. All Google maps screenshots are copyrighted by Google. "How should I get it back" – Google does not give you the permission, that's hopeless. You can recreate the map, using OpenStreetMap. Taivo (talk) 18:01, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
@Taivo: It was not a screenshot from Google Maps, I screenshotted it from the website http://critweb-outage.pgealerts.com/?WT.mc_id=Vanity_pge-outages. Not sure if that's a problem. EagerBeaverPJ (talk) 18:12, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

Every administrator has right to close deletion requests. Apparently everybody considers this a difficult case and does not want to take position. The situation is not critical, some deletion requests created by myself are open since June. There are no conchologists among Commons administrators, so this seems understandable to me. Please be patient. Taivo (talk) 10:40, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @DenesFeri and Majora: is the species unidentifiable, as in it could be many species and the photo doesn't provide enough information to narrow it down or has everybody so far failed to identify it? Hello, Taivo: These two photographs (Las ruinas de Campo durante la sequía de 2017.jpg and El valle de Luna con Lagüelles al fondo visto desde Campo durante la sequía de 2017.jpg) were taken by my father, who was born in that town, and They are now my property. I'm in the position to upload these, please recover these deleted images. Best Regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by Molan1983 (talk • contribs) 16:09, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

Molan1983. You asked deletion of the logo yourself claiming, that the logo is protected with copyright, and I fulfilled your request. Your request was correct, the logo was really copyrighted. For restoring the logos you have two possibilities. At first you can send OTRS-permission (open the link and look, what kind of e-mail should be sent to our permissions department at permission-commons@wikimedia.org). The second possibility is publishing your company logo on your company website under free license (CC-BY-SA-4.0 or similar). Taivo (talk) 16:20, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

Australian copyright[edit]

I am curious why you say that “Freedom on panorama in Australia does not apply to paintings or murals”. Which specific law are you referring to? - Chris.sherlock (talk) 20:59, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

@Chris.sherlock: Australian copyright law of course, what else? You can read about it at COM:FOP Australia and {{FoP-Australia}}. Taivo (talk) 21:02, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
I am an Australian and reasonably well versed in Australian copyright. There is no such exception that you state about murals or paintings. There is nothing on the policy you quote that states what you assert. The law is quite clear and there is no mention of murals. Where are you specifically getting your information from? - Chris.sherlock (talk) 21:12, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Apparently you did not notice: "X mark.svg Not OK for: paintings, drawings, engravings or photographs." Taivo (talk) 21:35, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
can you explain why? That contradicts the law! - Chris.sherlock (talk) 22:54, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
So I have read the linked copyright PDF. There is literally nothing that states that you cannot use these. Have you read the PDF it links to? - Chris.sherlock (talk) 23:01, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
Given that the not OK was wrong, I have removed it with a quick discussion of the issue at hand. I have also posted to the talk page. - Chris.sherlock (talk) 23:46, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion_requests/File:Robert_Earl_Burton,_founder_of_the_Fellowship_of_Friends.png[edit]

I restored the image that was deleted because I took the photograph myself thus I own the copyright. You mentioned that the reason for the deletion is "small photo without metadata, own work is not sure". I have the original photograph -- I had to crop it because there was another person on the left of the subject depicted (his left shoulder can be seen on the left of the photo). That's why the image is small and lacks metadata. Do you need the whole picture for me to proof that I took it? --UltraEdit (talk) 02:32, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

@UltraEdit: The best would be uploading full version with complete EXIF and after that cropping the image. Cropped image must be uploaded using the same filename, so that full version would be first version of cropped file. Commons has CropTool for cropping images without removing EXIF data and although cropping is easy, I can even make the crop myself. Taivo (talk) 18:25, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. How can I send you the original picture? --UltraEdit (talk) 07:13, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
No-no-no, do not send me anything. Please simply upload the original photo into Commons and crop it yourself (or tell me to crop). Taivo (talk) 09:21, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
Ok, will do. Thank you for your help. --UltraEdit (talk) 18:44, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

[edit]

Hi Taivo,

I noticed that you deleted as failing a license review for non-free images. Is this because the Commons does not permit non-free image licensing and, in this case, would it be better to upload it directly to Wikipedia? Senate logos and images are licensed, for free, for non-commercial purposes by the Speaker of the Senate of Canada, so I would certainly think Wikimedia Foundation counts as non-commercial.

Separately, it seems asinine to me why the Commons' licensing requirements are so much stricter than Wikipedia licensing requirements. It makes me wonder what the point of using the Commons is.

And finally, can you restore this image to the Wikipedia File: namespace?

Cheers,
--Dmehus (talk) 16:37, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Comment I deleted the image, because it was sourced sencanada.en, but this site (as you can see at https://sencanada.ca/en/important-notices/ ) prohibits commercial use. Wikimedia Foundation is non-commercial organization, but nevertheless every file in Commons must be free for commercial use and derivative works. You can read more about that here. You can upload it into such projects, which allow fair use, for example English Wikipedia, but Commons prohibits fair use. The uploader claimed falsely, that it was published under {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, I confirmed, that it was wrong, and deleted it. The uploader is indefinitely blocked for uploading a lot of copyright violations and incorrectly licensing them. Taivo (talk) 17:29, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
Taivo still, Wikimedia's usage is arguably non-commercial. It seems odd that the Commons doesn't permit fair use, but English Wikipedia and perhaps other Wikimedia properties permit them. It makes me wonder why I'd want to even use the Commons? I guess if the file is going to be used across multiple properties, then yeah, but in this case, it's unlikely a Canadian Senate image would be used on Japanese Wikipedia. Regarding the indef block of the user, to be clear, what is "a lot of copyright violations"? Someone wouldn't be indef blocked for one or two incorrect license tags, correct? --Dmehus (talk) 02:00, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
@Dmehus: , Commons is not simply repository for images for different wiki-projects. Just like Wikipedia is repository of knowledge of humankind, Commons is repository of all free educational media of humankind, whether it is used in some kind of wiki-projects or not. We collect media not only for other wikiprojects, but for every people in the world, so that everybody could search it for any topic and be sure, that nobody will come to ask money, even it is used commercially. Commons hosts paintings of old painters, which do not have articles in any project. Commons hosts old and outdated photos and logos to show history. Bytheway, there is an article about Senate of Canada in 29 languages, including Japanese. You asked about "a lot of copyright violation" – if you are talking about MayorCarter, whose unblock I declined yesterday, then (s)he had 19 deleted files and only 1 was correctly licensed. Indefinite block due to copyright violations follows usually after multiple warnings and shorter blocks, if the user has shown incapability or unwillingness to learn. And you asked about restoring files – yes, administrator has power to restore files. Taivo (talk) 10:20, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
@Taivo: Belated reply, but wanted to thank you for the helpful follow-up information. Dmehus (talk) 00:02, 24 January 2020 (UTC)

File:Paternal_wpedzich.jpg[edit]

Hello.

I am quite supprised with your deletion of this photo. Especially because two reasons:

  • small unused personal photo without metadata - unused? It was used on Wikipedia:Wikipedystów portret własny - Wikipedians portrait themselfs page. And where photo of wikipedian should be?
  • Copyright violation; see Commons:Licensing (F1): F1 point as far as I checked is Content is apparently a copyright violation, with no good evidence of Commons-compatible licensing being issued by the copyright holder or status as a free work. - can you tell me why intentional image of wikipedian is apparently a copyright violation? PMG (talk) 08:42, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
Zoranzoki21 nominated it for speedy deletion and I fulfilled the request. I was quite sure, that nobody will protest, but as it happened otherways, I will restore the photo and will create a regular deletion request. Taivo (talk) 10:20, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, I re-deleted the image as copyright violation. The photo is derivative work of two deleted files: file:1RolandNhg.jpg (deleted in January 2009 due to missing essential information) and file:Wpedzich z synkiem.jpg, which Wojciech Pędzich himself deleted in December 2012 with reason "somebody is playing stoopid games". Wpedzich z synkiem.jpg is in my opinion not a problem, but 1RolandNhg.jpg is a problem. Sorry again for giving incorrect reason at first, when deleting the file. @Kruusamägi: Palun esita need failid kustutamiseks. Kuva vasakus servas oleval tööribal on minul kõige all "Nominate for deletion". Kasuks tuleks, kui sa nendes taotlustes iga faili kohta mõne vea ära näitaksid. Ilma selliste taotlusteta, kiirkorras ei tohi ma neid faile kustutada. Taivo (talk) 16:23, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
Siin on svg versioon.
Taivo (talk) 16:31, 9 December 2019 (UTC)
Ühtlasi on siin üks duplikaat, mille võiks kustutada. Alles jätaks selle.

Why do you keep removing my personal categories from my images?[edit]

@AlbanGeller: I granted you the right. At moment there's 666 rollbackers and you are the 667th. But please archive your talkpage, it's too long! Taivo (talk) 10:33, 12 December 2019 (UTC)

Regarding copyright violation[edit]

All the pictures i had uploaded was mine. I have enough proof's. Paul sachudhanandam (talk) 03:34, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

@Paul sachudhanandam: Excellent. Please open COM:OTRS page and look, what kind of e-mail should be sent to our permissions department at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. After receiving, accepting and processing the letter the files will be restored. The permission must come from copyright holder, that means usually from photographer.

Mitte taastamist ega muud sellist, vaid ainult täpset kustutamise aega. Kruusamägi (talk) 14:52, 26 December 2019 (UTC)

@Kruusamägi: Mina kustutasin selle 19. jaanuaril 2016 kell 16.24 Ssgreporteri palvel. Taivo (talk) 13:57, 27 December 2019 (UTC)
