Uploads of dedicated photographs[edit]

Reference message sent to me regarding the Dedicated Classical Pianist Photographs added to artists sites. These are photos the various artists possess and distribute for publicity purposes, inclusion in programs and any newspaper articles or concert reviews they might receive. Some photos might have been taken by my father, but certainly not most. I was under the impression that when a dedication is made to a party, they are then the owners of said document and can do what they will with it! My impression is that they are quite illuminating on a musicians wiki site as they give some insight into their touring, sometimes the number of places where they performed, and frequently their popularity and extra requests to tour again. Please advise me what further steps I can take to satisfy the copyright, as it would be a shame to delete. ~~~~

Problemen[edit]

Kun jij even op mijn OP kijken?

Mvg Bakel123 (talk) 14:12, 16 January 2012 (UTC)

St Patrick's Purgatory[edit]

Do you notice the small hill with the bell tower behind the tree? This was the location of St. Patrick's Purgatory on Station Island.

Hi Deadstar, how do you come to the assumption to locate St. Patrick's Purgatory on Saints Island? This is wrong. It was located on Station Island. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 19:27, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Apologies. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:06, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
I was curious though how I came to it - it was based on the categories for Category:Saints Island, Lough Derg, Donegal (which was renamed to include "County") - this had the Purgatory category on it: [1], so I presumed one was related to the other. But I haven't been there, so from what you are saying this is incorrect & I have removed it now. Feel free to adjust as you see fit. I did not add the Purgatory to the Saints Island category as in my mind the Island would be the higher category. Hope that helps. -- Deadstar (msg) 09:10, 25 April 2012 (UTC)

Monasteries are not cloisters[edit]

Hi Deadstar, please read the leading notice at Category:Cloisters. I've just reverted the mistaken re-categorizations in this regard. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 12:52, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

That's fine. I found a number of images in the category were also sitting in cloisters, so I took them out and put the main one in. I did not read the description on the category. These things are easily fixed by people who know more than me. -- Deadstar (msg) 12:54, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Please feel free to ask me anything in relation to Ireland and/or monasticism. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 13:22, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. Would you know if there is a way to search for geograph pictures of Ireland specifically? Also, do you know why there is no "Churches in Ireland" category (it's Churches and monasteries as you probably know)? It's always a struggle to remember :) thanks. -- Deadstar (msg) 07:49, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
You want to have a list of all pictures transfered from geograph of Ireland at Commons or what? Sorry, I do not understand exactly what you want. Regarding your second question: Quite a number of monastic churches were turned into parish churches. (Example: Category:Duiske Abbey.) Or parish churches were erected at former monastic sites. (Example: Category:Drumhome Old Church.) Categories of the form Churches and monasteries makes this easy. As these categories go down to the county-level and some of them have few entries (example: Category:Churches and monasteries in County Longford), it seems convenient to keep it that way for now. And we should at some point think about a per church diocese-wise categorization of parish churches but this would be orthogonal to the current categorization. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 08:31, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
"You want to have a list of all pictures transfered from geograph of Ireland at Commons or what?" - yes. A lot of those need to be checked. -- Deadstar (msg) 08:47, 13 June 2012 (UTC) P.S. I live in Ireland, hence my interest.
This can be done using the catscan tools. (In the moment, however, the toolserver appears to be quite slow/loaded.) --AFBorchert (talk) 09:46, 13 June 2012 (UTC) I'm not Irish but I've always to return to Ireland since my first visit in 1986.
Hm yes. Having no luck with that at all. Will probably have to get professional help for that one... MIght try again later. -- Deadstar (msg) 10:23, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi, just wondering what method you would prefer for attribution; this is new for me.

Please advise thanks, :)

Hi Drew, I did not take the picture, it was uploaded initially by User:Sarefo, with a note saying "Photo made by my brother, Alex Zelenko. Taken July 31, 2006". So perhaps check with user Sarefo (I will leave a message on their talk page). You can have a look at Commons:Credit line for some examples how you can attribute files you want to use. Hope that helps. Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 10:41, 21 February 2013 (UTC)

@Warp3: Hi, and thank you for your message. "en: wikipedia" is not a valid source, and (I don't recall the image, sorry) it was likely that the image was not made by the uploader at en: wikipedia. Which means that it needs an outside source/link to prove that it is free. Hope this helps. Please don't remove files from my maintainence category[edit]

You're starting to remove files from Category:Files by User:Hike395 from en.wikipedia. Please stop removing files from this category: it's a hidden category that I use to keep track of what I've transferred from en. I did not choose its name: it was created in parallel to other similar categories.

I am going to revert your removals. Thanks for listening. — hike395 (talk) 04:56, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi there, and thanks for your note. I am sorry that you do not agree with my removals, but I can also see you realise that the reason: the name of the category in my mind implies that you created those files. I just looked into that and would not agree with the naming convention on those user categories. There's not much I can do about that (I don't fancy getting into a lengthy discussion around the subject), so thanks for pointing it out. Thanks -- Deadstar (msg) 08:18, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

File:Recycling.JPG[edit]

Hello Deadstar!

As you might have seen, I have made a more full description at this file. The picture was taken about 1 km north of the village Beder in easter Jutland. It shows a cannon barrel that was used as a mouth piece for at small, natural fountain. The gun must have been Preussian or Danish and used during the war in 1866. The fountain is called "Kærlighedskilden" (i.e. "The love fountain"), as the water is supposed to further fertility (sic!).

The date is very approximate, but that is not really that important, as the motive is still existing.

I hope this will be helpful!

Kind regards --Sten Porse (talk) 16:01, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Deadstar,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Thanks,
-- Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 09:44, 22 May 2016 (UTC)

OK. I think I'm going to stop caring about these notices, as I have a lot of those coming. I have no information on when they were first published. In this case - a publicity shot of an actor who died in 1920, I think it is very likely it was published somewhere around the date it was taken. And I know - precautionary principle and all that. So hereby please go ahead, delete anything that has no source and my name on it without notifying me. Please notify the original uploader on en: wiki as they might have more information. @Rédacteur Tibet: Hi, I had a look at the article, and tried to find out what the status is, but unfortunately I can't find any mention of it being free of copyright. It is a 2001 article with a 1986 photograph, so age is out of the question. Produced for Medical History, Volume 45(4); 2001 Oct. It has more info and a nice large version of the image here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1044426/ in case you didn't see it. I can't help you unfortunately, the only thing possible is send an email to the Wellcome library and ask. -- Deadstar (msg) 18:00, 11 August 2017 (UTC)

Fleurons[edit]

[note: pasted from Fae's talkpage for future reference] Hi Fæ, can you point me to the project page for the fleurons (I presume there is one)? I'm misunderstanding I think, as I have come across a few images like File:A lecture Fleuron T056667-7.png that don't seem to be of fleurons? I need to understand if I can mark them for deletion, or how to refer them on to someone who can check. Thanks. -- Deadstar (msg) 12:03, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

See User:Fæ/Project list/Fleuron and the section on quality. Feel free to delete scans that you think are too poor to be useful, such as your example, but woodcuts etc. that are reasonable and where the original may not be freely available, are probably worth recategorizing rather than deleting. It's reasonably easy to list out all images from a given book based on the book id number, so in some cases it may be worth creating a book category for a collection of scans. -- (talk) 12:12, 18 September 2017 (UTC)
Also note to self for future reference: Obvious cases can be put in Category:Uploads by Fæ needing speedy deletion -- Deadstar (msg) 12:51, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

Found!!! If you agree, I restore the version I uploaded and add more information about the work. --PancoPinco (talk) 13:16, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
No, don't restore. Upload the file as a seperate file, and put in all the info you found. That way commons has two files of the same picture, obviously taken with different cameras or different circumstances making one a lot blue-er than the other. This happens a lot with paintings. It could even be that your painting is a copy of the other one (or the other way around) which accounts for the difference in colouration! So don't overwrite :) -- Deadstar (msg) 13:26, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
PS: as a sidenote, have a look at Van Gogh's bedroom painting for instance. There are many different versions of the same file, that look identical, but they are subtly different. So they're all kept and people can choose which is in their opinion "the best" for their project.

Howard Marsh jpg, do not delete[edit]

Hello, I do not understand the issue with this addition to the Howard Marsh entry. He is my father’s uncle and this is his headshot given to my grandmother. There was no picture for him and we added it accordingly. Thank you, Gscimeca Gscimeca (talk) 13:32, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

@Gscimeca: Hi Gscimeca, and thank you for replying. It is great to have that picture (I was on actually on my way to crop it when I decided to question it), and I do not intend to delete it. But as you did not take the photograph yourself, you cannot claim copyright, which is what it now says on the file. There is a very remote possibility that the photographer (or their estate) wants to claim rights to it. As this photograph was taken a long time ago (before 1923 I presume - does it have any date on it? You might have a good idea through the family line?) and as it was a publicity shot, it stands to reason that it was "published before 1923 in the US", which means it is now public domain in the US (see Commons:Hirtle_chart). However, if it is after 1924, other rules apply. Does it have any information on it about the photographer at all? I think we are safe sticking the PD-old tag on it, but having you here will make it a lot easier to determine! Thank you for any further info you have. Kind regards, -- Deadstar (msg) 14:10, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in Ireland. We'd be delighted if you would enter again this year, and continue to build on the image archive of Ireland's built heritage.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments Ireland website. If you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. Once again, this year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Thanks again for your help and enthusiasm! Smirkybec (talk) 19:27, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Men with glasses vs. Men wearing glasses[edit]

Hi, Deadstar. I've noticed you adding files to Category:Men with glasses. You might not have noticed that there is a subcategory Category:Men wearing glasses for images of men wearing glasses. That is to distinguish from files like this one where the glasses aren't actually being worn (at least not over the eyes). It would be helpful if you categorize into the subcategory where appropriate. Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 09:37, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for the tip! -- Deadstar (msg) 10:54, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Category:FAMINE_monument[edit]

Category discussion warning

Category:FAMINE_monument has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
