Additional parameter

Hi, I would like to request an additional parameter called "year unknown". I know there already is a "date unknown", but in some cases this looks a bit strange, given that paintings for example are usually dated by year and not by date. "year unknown" translates into German as "Ohne Jahr", in Dutch as "Zonder jaar", in French as "Sans année", and in latin as "Sine anno". Regards, Vincent Steenberg (talk) 19:06, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

No it doesn't, these translations mean "no year". German would be "Jahr unbekannt", and the other languages would be different as well. To request an edit, use Template:Edit request in this section. Hekerui (talk) 00:33, 30 December 2010 (UTC)

"Année inconnue" is probably a bit clearer in French too. --Zolo (talk) 07:06, 30 December 2010 (UTC)
Año desconocido in Spanish (es:) and Any desconegut in Catalan (ca:). --Zaqarbal (talk) 10:26, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I want that 'AD or BC part' before the 'date part' in Malayalam translation, but don't know how. Please help. Thank you--Praveen:talk 13:57, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

I did some changes to {{Era}} and {{Other date/mirror}}. See results here. Please correct ml version in {{Era}} and if {{Other date/test mirror}} looks good in Malayalam than we can move {{Other date/mirror}} to {{Other date}}. --Jarekt (talk) 03:46, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Its fine. I think {{Other date/mirror}} is good to transfer code. ({{Era}} also translated.) Thank you for quick re-engineering. :)--Praveen:talk 00:42, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

use a specific page for seasons

Maybe seasons could be stored in a different page. This would allow to use them for other purposes than date, for example in descriptions of woodcuts in the series {{One Hundred Famous Views of Edo}}--Zolo (talk) 11:13, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

I see no harm in that. I would say wait for a few days to make sure there are no good opposing arguments and than create a new template and modify {{Other date/mirror}}. I or some else will change {{Other date}}. --Jarekt (talk) 13:48, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

season|foo currently not displayed

I noticed that if an "old" form like {{other date|season|spring|2008}} is used, the date field appears empty – compare the two revisions here for example. I guess that there are many more file descriptions that still use |season|foo instead of just |foo. Maybe a dedicated bot run would be useful to fix this issue … --:bdk: 01:50, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

user:JarektBot replaced all uses of {{Other date|season|foo}} on 2010-12-18 and retired the option next day. The file you found was modified after they were all replaced and before the option was retired. I will check if there are more of those. --Jarekt (talk) 12:51, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

"late 1 st and early 2 nd century BC"

In most cases (paintings, drawings, etc.), an artwork will not be both. Hence, the "turn of the century" value should result in "or", not "and". --FA2010 (talk) 19:20, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

That is true, but in case of {{Creator}} workperiod "and" makes more sense and it works for age of artworks too, although not as good as "or". One can also nest several {{Other date}} to get "or" message, the way we were doing it until recently when I added "turn of ..." options. --Jarekt (talk) 02:36, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

quarter?

What about a parameter "quarter"? {{other date|quarter|nth|xxx}} E.g. {{other date|1quarter|{{other date|century|18}}}} → "1. Viertel 18. Jahrhundert". Similar to: {{other date|1half|{{other date|century|18}}}} first half of 18th century

I noticed the dutch (NL) translation of this new parameter is missing. Perhaps someone could add these. They are as follows:
1st quarter [of 18th century] = eerste kwart [18e eeuw]
2nd quarter [of 18th century] = tweede kwart [18e eeuw]
3rd quarter [of 18th century] = derde kwart [18e eeuw]
4th quarter [of 18th century] = vierde kwart [18e eeuw]

c.

Could the output "ca. " please be changed to "c. " (as recommended by MOSNUM)? GFHandel (talk) 21:14, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

✓ Done --Jarekt (talk) 13:12, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Why? The En-wp guideline makes the recommendation, but offers no reason. Should there not be a better rationale than "en-wp says so"? --Skeezix1000 (talk) 11:00, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
I have no opinion on which one is better "ca." or "c." , but it seems like Wikipedia:MOSNUM#Longer_periods En-wp guideline prefers "c.". And I like the idea of uniformity of style. That guideline does not seem to give any reasons or quote any references for any if its recommendations. --Jarekt (talk) 12:16, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Incorrect French localization for "ca"

Hi,

The French translation for the "ca" parameter is incorrect. It currently is:

      |fr=vers {{ISOdate|1={{{2|}}}|2=fr}} – {{ISOdate|1={{{3|}}}|2=fr}}

But it should be:

      |fr=vers {{ISOdate|1={{{2|}}}|2=fr}}-{{ISOdate|1={{{3|}}}|2=fr}}

(no spaces between dash, and short dash instead of medium dash.)

Could a sysop do the change? Thanks. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 08:42, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, that's good! I just realize there is another mistake for the "firsthalf" parameter:

      |fr=1<sup>re</sup> moitié du {{ISOdate|1={{{2|}}}|2=fr}}

should be:

      |fr=1<sup>re</sup> moitié de {{ISOdate|1={{{2|}}}|2=fr}}

(It's "de" for years or monthes, not "du". The parameter "secondhalf" uses "de" and is correct.) Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 09:30, 13 October 2011 (UTC)

I've fixed that, too. odder (talk) 10:51, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
