Object location as secondary coordinate
Hi all, hi @Jarekt: Is there a reason why this template does not pass the secondary coordinate parameter to mw:Extension:GeoData (via Module:Coordinates) by default? This would allow to obtain the object location using the geosearch API or from the geo_tags
SQL table. Related Phabricator task: T135686. – Simon04 (talk) 14:20, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- Simon04, I am not sure what are you asking about. I wrote all the code for this template but I do not have deep understanding of tags needed for communication with tools that might use the data. The way it works is that if someone asks for additional tagging I add it or help with adding it and I try not to loose it as the code changes. So if some passing mechanism is not there, propose to add it, and if no one objects, I will work with you to add it. As I recall, {{Object location}} is much less interesting to mapping tools as it does not say anything about camera location, and depicted object could be meters or kilometers away. Only Proximityrama tool seems to be using that information and they can get coordinates they need somehow. --Jarekt (talk) 14:51, 20 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: @Kolossos: I would like to see the parameter
secondary=1
to be passed for every{{#invoke:Coordinates}}
invocation (unless an other value is specified for this parameter). This would greatly ease extracting the object location in my Commons:Locator-tool (currently I fetch the coordinates from Template:Location from the API, but need to fetch and parse the wikitext for extracting the Template:Object location). Would the change be feasible or is there anything objecting this? – Simon04 (talk) 17:44, 21 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: @Kolossos: I would like to see the parameter
@Jarekt: Hi! Finally I found time to investigate this issue again. I simulated an invocation of mw:Extension:GeoData for the {{Object location}} of one picture: Special:Diff/284920290 (not marking it as primary). The API calls nicely distinguish between returning the primary coordinate only (by default) and returning all coordinates. Maybe we could think of an adequate type for the object location (e.g., landmark?). This would definitively help my Commons:Locator-tool to deal with {{Location}} and {{Object location}} in the same way. Thanks! – Simon04 (talk) 20:23, 2 February 2018 (UTC)
- Simon04, Sorry I have seen this post but forgot about it before I replied. I do not know much about who and what tools use the locations. However if you propose specific change, We can post it here and on com:Geo. We can ping other people that might know if the change would break anything and if there are no objections than I would deploy it. --Jarekt (talk) 02:58, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

Longitude sign
@The RedBurn: it looks like your edit of the documentation is wrong: it says "Degrees of Longitude. The sign indicates hemisphere: +(West) and -(East)", while the template works in the opposite way:

- @The RedBurn and Djadjko: no answer and seems obviously wrong (East has positive longitudes for centuries), I reverted this edit. Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 16:22, 24 February 2018 (UTC)

Name
@Jarekt: The templates miss "name" parameter which is useful to name the points when displayed using {{Geogroup}} etc. Some Wikipedias enable to use such a parameter, it should be not difficult to implement it. --ŠJů (talk) 00:30, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- I would not know what to do with "name" parameter, as do not call {{Geogroup}}. --Jarekt (talk) 02:37, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- The parameter can be optional. At the Czech Wikipedia, the cs:Template:Souřadnice (=coordinates) has a parameter "název" (= name) and the template cs:Template:Mapa souřadnic (=Geogroup) is able to deal with it. en:Template:Coord support also the parameter "name". I thing, it cannot be difficult to apply it at Commons. --ŠJů (talk) 02:10, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- Yes I know that wikipedia templates take name parameter, but what would you do with it on Commons? --Jarekt (talk) 17:26, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Location templates in the Category namespace
I used {{Object location}} templates in a discussion about disambiguation (Category talk:Sand Water, Shetland), and it works there perfectly. However, when I moved the list of coordinates to the Category:Sand Water, Shetland as an aid for disambiguation, the map links don't work and {{Geogroup}} ignores also the links used directly on the page. --ŠJů (talk) 01:06, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- {{Object location}} in Category has OSM link to tools that show the location of the geocoded images within the category. Try it here. :{{Object location}} in other namespaces can not do that so they connect to a different tool, that show location of images nearby to the template coordinates (try it here). The Google Maps link seem to be broken. --Jarekt (talk) 02:34, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
- As obvious from the example, it is useful to combine both functions, to display coordinates from the page as well as coordinates from the included geocoded images. --ŠJů (talk) 02:15, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
- At the moment we have one tool to display images from a category and a different one to display nearby images. Currently OSM uses one or the other, but there is no tool to do both. --Jarekt (talk) 17:24, 20 July 2018 (UTC)
Width
The width of this template is 100% which is a problem when there are infoboxes in the category. Zee Category:Heilige Jozef, Barger-Compascuum, where the photo's start too low at the bottom. Could anybody fix that? Thank you in advance! Ymnes (talk) 16:37, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
- Where practical, I often move full-width templates to the top. This may not be good in some cases, but for this building category the infobox has the same information and links, thus making the Location template unnecessary. However, the coordinates are slightly different. If that means the Wikidata item is wrong, an editor with local knowledge should adjust it. Jim.henderson (talk) 13:07, 1 August 2018 (UTC)
Problem with QuickStatements
Hi all! When a category containing this template is connected to an item which hasn't the coordinates it has, this template generates this message: "The above coordinates are missing from linked Wikidata item Q***. Click here to copy it" (e.g. Category:Santa Croce (Onano)). However, after QuickStatements recently passed to 2.0 version, this link is apparently useless because it doesn't directly add the coordinates to the Wikidata item. Could someone (maybe @Magnus Manske: ) solve this problem? Thanks, --Epìdosis 13:09, 1 August 2018 (UTC)

Missing maps
@Mike Peel and Jarekt: Files with {{Location}} template are listed into Category:Pages with maps, but the files pages are without any map yet. I think, the output of the template should contain a similar map as {{Infobox Wikidata}} uses. Such as map on the file pages is very wanted and needed. Maybe, also UploadWizard form should use a map to check the entered or imported coordinates.
As wiwosm/osm-on-ol/commons-on-osm is not updated (it is a dead archive only, not displaying new images), this template should contain links to new map tools, as osm4wiki wikishootme etc. (which should be improved by all commons-on-osm useful features). Generally, {{Information}} and {{Location}} should be harmonized with {{Infobox Wikidata}} as possible. --ŠJů (talk) 15:14, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
- Maybe {{Location}} should be rewriten as collapsible template, with similar look as now but with possibility to uncolapse it when clicked. As for Category:Pages with maps category, it is not added by any template or module, but by kartographer extension, so we do not have any say about what pages get it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:35, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- @Jarekt: I would like to see the map on the file page without clicking to uncolapse. --ŠJů (talk) 00:47, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
- Maps need to be big to be useful We can create some mockups and ask others about what they prefer, but I would vote for small box with option to uncollapse. --Jarekt (talk) 01:00, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
