Parameter[edit]

Why do the instructions in this template's documentation and elsewhere tell us to use a parameter ("{{editprotected|...}}"), but the template code never uses that parameter anywhere and doesn't display it? Fut.Perf. 07:32, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

{{edit request|This should be displayed somewhere, but isn't.}}

Fut.Perf. 07:32, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for fixing my mistake in the heading on Talk:Main Page. If I'm reading the docs correctly here, it appears that you can specify how the page will show up in CAT:EP if you use the parameter setting... I'm not sure how that's useful though, or if the template even does that. I think the /doc page is editable if you'd like to remove that. Killiondude (talk) 18:49, 25 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This instruction came from Template:TemplateBox/layout. Is it now clearer? Or simply suggest a better wording. -- Rillke(q?) 12:29, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading Protection[edit]

It Says It's Semi-Protected Even Though It's Fully Protected. This Is Not Your Ordinary Acid3 Fan. (My Talk Page) 23:37, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Er, I don't see anywhere where this page is claimed to be semi-protected. Can you clarify? JesseW (talk) 02:36, 21 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No parameter for when a request has been answered[edit]

This template needs a parameter that can be used by the editor answering the request, so as to disable the call for action (categorization) without removing the template from talk-page threads outright. The English Wikipedia versions of this template have an |answered= parameter. Currently, transclusions are being disabled with an unsightly hack. – voidxor 01:52, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeff G., 4nn1l2, Morgankevinj, Sarang, and ZI Jony: Anybody? – voidxor 20:15, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Voidxor: Sorry for the delay, but this was not an edit request, it was just a statement. Most people who address such requests defang them in some way. What would you have the template say if |answered= were used in the affirmative? — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:04, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeff G.: You are correct that this was not an edit request; it was meant to spark discussion. Perhaps I should have ended with a question. Anyway, could we use the English Wikipedia's {{Edit template-protected}} template as a go-by? The thing I like about that approach, rather than turning it into a template link, is that it clearly shows on the talk page that there was a request, but it has since been answered. – voidxor 16:16, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Fulfill this request..." uses incorrect username[edit]

The autogenerated edit-summary when using this button on the template sometimes includes the wrong username. See for example this edit as generated from this state of a talkpage: the request was by Editør but the edit-summary says LittleWink. The problem seems to be that the template uses {{REVISIONUSER}}, which is "the user who made the most recent edit to the page," so it is only correct if nobody else has edited the page after the request was made. Specific category for requests that require an interface admin[edit]

<includeonly>{{{category|[[Category:Commons protected edit requests{{#if:{{{technical|}}}| (technical)|}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}}</includeonly>

Change to:

<includeonly>{{{category|[[Category:Commons protected edit requests{{#switch:{{NAMESPACE}}|MediaWiki talk= for interface administrators|{{#if:{{{technical|}}}| (technical)|}}}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}}</includeonly>

This will cause requests in MediaWiki talk namespace to be categorized in Category:Commons protected edit requests for interface administrators instead of Category:Commons protected edit requests.

@4nn1l2: Unfortunately this implementation is flawed. Only JS/CSS pages (and a few others like MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition) are interface admin protected. For example, the edit request I just made for MediaWiki:Sidebar can be fulfilled by any normal administrator. Legoktm (talk) 06:55, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Legoktm: Do you know the correct implementation? 4nn1l2 (talk) 11:25, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Follow-up on this[edit]

Hi. I've just implemented a proposed change in the sandbox ({{Edit request/sandbox}}) to fix the problem that was identified above (good thing I thought to check this page before implementing). Unless anyone spots any issues, I'll probably move it over to the main template tomorrow. Cc: @Legoktm and 4nn1l2. Cheers, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:26, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Needs an option for edit requests on translations...[edit]

.. which may or may not be protected. This is because of the use case where a user may identify a technical fault, but doesn't feel happy editing a page that isn't in their own language. See use case here Template talk:PolishPresidentCopyright/fi.

Given that many translated templates are likey to share a common 'layout' even in the nominally translated portions, an {{edit request}} would also imply that the translations of a template into other languages should also be checked for the related issue identified.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:56, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comma[edit]

{{Edit protected}} There is an extraneous comma in „szerkesztést, vagy módosítást” in the Hungarian translation. Here the comma is unnecessary, because „vagy” is inside a simple sentence. Alfa-ketosav (talk) 17:29, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Alfa-ketosav: Done. By the way, no special access was needed, the translation subpage is freely editable. (You can access it by clicking the “magyar” link in the “Fordítás”/“Localization” section of the template documentation.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:10, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know. I saw "View source" and came here. Alfa-ketosav (talk) 05:00, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

if and ifeq[edit]

{{Edit request}}

I find filling |temppro=whatever unnecessary; the template can auto-detect it using MWs. Use an ifeq instead:

{{autotranslate|base=Edit request}}<includeonly><!--
-->{{{category|[[Category:Commons protected edit requests<!--
    -->{{#switch:{{NAMESPACE}}<!--
    -->|MediaWiki talk= for interface administrators<!--
    -->|<!--
        -->{{#if:{{{technical|}}}<!--
        -->| (technical)<!--
        -->}}<!--
        -->{{#ifeq:{{PROTECTIONLEVEL:edit|{{SUBJECTPAGENAME}}}}|templateeditor<!--
        -->| (template protected)<!--
        -->}}<!--
        -->{{#if:{{{protlev|}}}<!--
        -->| (protection level)<!--
        -->}}<!--
    -->}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]<!--
-->}}}</includeonly>

If removing a parameter is considered breaking change, then make ifeq default:

{{autotranslate|base=Edit request}}<includeonly><!--
-->{{{category|[[Category:Commons protected edit requests<!--
    -->{{#switch:{{NAMESPACE}}<!--
    -->|MediaWiki talk= for interface administrators<!--
    -->|<!--
        -->{{#if:{{{technical|}}}<!--
        -->| (technical)<!--
        -->}}<!--
        -->{{#if:{{{temppro|<!--
            -->{{#ifeq:{{PROTECTIONLEVEL:edit|{{SUBJECTPAGENAME}}}}|templateeditor<!--
            -->|yes<!--
            -->}}}}}<!--
        -->| (template protected)<!--
        -->}}<!--
        -->{{#if:{{{protlev|}}}<!--
        -->| (protection level)<!--
        -->}}<!--
    -->}}|{{PAGENAME}}]]<!--

Request to add an indication as to whether the request was answered or not[edit]

It is requested that an edit or modification be made to this protected page.
Administrators/template editors: Please apply <nowiki> or {{Tl}} to the tag after the request is fulfilled.

Veverve

This proposal is inspired by the WP template en:Template:Edit semi-protected. This intends to make it clearer whether an edit request was answered. I do not have the coding skills needed to write the code for what I propose, so I am writing the overall idea.

Following the discussion at #No parameter for when a request has been answered, I make the following proposal:

  1. add an ans or answered parameter, and this parameter should have as possible values:
a) "y" or "yes"
b) "n" or "no"
c) blank or any other value

So for example if the edit request was either accepted or refused, the parameter would look like:answered=y

This answered parameter would indicate either:

Depending on the values entered, the template should behave the way en:Template:Edit semi-protected does:

  • If the values are a), the template should have a yellow background, and be moved to the right. The template should state:
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request
  • If the values are b) or c), the template stays as it is
