Bugs[edit]

This script does not recognise categorisation where space is added between "[[Category:" and the category name, eg [[Category: Military Insignia]]. /82.212.68.183 15:47, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is another bug when the target category name is a prefix of the source category name. The script will say that the image already is in the target category, even when it is not. /82.212.68.183 17:03, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Fixed in the latest version --DieBuche (talk) 00:43, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have the impression that this will not work as expected on categories containing '&'. Shouldn't the last to functions use encodeURIComponent of the category name?

function cat_a_lot_search_cat() {
  var newcat = document.cat_a_lot_searchcat.cat_a_lot_searchcatname.value ;
  cat_a_lot_update_cats (encodeURIComponent (newcat)) ;
}

function run_cat_a_lot () {
  cat_a_lot_data = document.getElementById("cat_a_lot_data") ;
  cat_a_lot_mode = document.getElementById("cat_a_lot_mode").checked ;
  if ( cat_a_lot_mode == false ) {
    cat_a_lot_data.style.display = "none" ;
    cat_a_lot_mark_all ( 0 ) ;
  } else {
    cat_a_lot_mark_all ( 1 ) ;
    cat_a_lot_data.style.display = "block" ;
    cat_a_lot_update_cats (encodeURIComponent (wgTitle)) ;
  }
}

Possibly also in functions cat_a_lot_get_subcategories and in cat_a_lot_get_parent_categories in the ret.push statement, depending on what the server-side script returns. Lupo 22:11, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Auto-save[edit]

Is it possible to have this auto-save the edits and close all the tabs when it's done? It already gives an auto-summary, so this would be very useful. Rocket000 02:08, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I concur, HotCat.js does this, so it shoudln't be hard. That way moving several files would be less of a hassle. --Waldir talk 00:42, 13 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can all be done. I'm travelling right now, so I won't get around to do it until end of next week (not that trivial). In the meantime, check out Commons Commander that can do all these things through a TUSC account, no tabs etc. I'll try to make that into a "fake" special page so it can be used directly from within Commons. Another bug & room for improvement :o)[edit]

Another bug concerns that the tool doesn't recognize underscores replacing blank spaces: Category:Cats and dogs and Category:Cats_and_dogs should be the same, but the tool only recognizes the former (error message that it didn't find an occurrence of the category).

Not a bug, but room for improvement: When the tool removes categories, it should also remove the line in which the category was placed. Right now it leaves an extra empty line. I realize that there's probably a need to check whether the category was really in a line by itself (there are some exceptions of users who write categories without line breaks), but it'd be great if it could be changed.

It'd be great if there were an option to check "This is a minor edit" for all changes. We can debate whether categorizing is "ever" a major change (I'd say there are only very few exceptions), but either way the usual way of using the tool is to re-categorize what was either wrong (that should not require special attention) or too unspecific (a minor change) before.

If anyone really wants to put work into the tool: It'd be great if more than one category could be removed and/or added at once. Heaven would be if it would even let you search for it: For example, moving all media in "Category:Sailing ships" and "category:Ships of the Netherlands" into "category:Sailing ships of the Netherlands" (removing both prior categories).

Finally: Is there a way of "auto-okaying" all changes rather than all single windows popping up? When recategorizing a lot (!) of changes, I don't want to have to click "okay" 100s of times! ... All that being said, thanks for such a great tool. I spend much more time recategorizing media than I wanted or should... --Ibn Battuta 20:22, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS: Just found - the tool does not touch sorting specifications. So if I move an image from [[Category:original category|bla bla bla]], it'll be moved to [[Category:new category|bla bla bla]]. As sorting is usually category specific, the tool should either simply delete the specification or should give a warning message or something.

If the image has interwiki links, the categorization should be above those links. Right now it isn't. Generally, it would be helpful if all categories were at the same spot. Ideally, this should be the right spot (between license information & - if existent - interwiki links), but unless all old categories get copied there, the new categorization should be next to the old ones. Right now, that's not the case either (unless you "move" the image, then the tool just replaces the old category).

... and then there was the more minor issue that, after error messages, you see the beginning of the category page. It would be much easier (especially in the large categories that usually need this tool) if the tool could send you to the first image causing an error message or at the least not change what part of the page you see (with the former obviously being more desirable). --Ibn Battuta 22:53, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PPS: Admittedly an extreme case, but try to "move" this image from category:James Cook elsewhere - as you can see, someone had categorized it repeatedly in the first category. It'd be great if the tool could check for that and then move it only once to the new category. (Four times are not common, of course, but I've seen several images being assigned to one category twice.) BTW, this is of course linked to the issue about underscores mentioned above: If an image was categorized once as category:James Cook and once as Category:James_Cook, the tool would currently recognize only one, so that "moving" the image would actually result in copying it. ... Despite all this feedback, still loving it: Ibn Battuta 14:53, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PPPS: Another real bug (and I haven't yet figured out what it's about): I can't move or copy pictures to Category:Lighthouses in Côtes-d'Armor. Maybe a problem with the special characters? Other special characters haven't been a problem, so maybe it's the apostrophe? As I said, I don't know.

And one that I had forgotten to mention earlier: There seems to be a problem with categories including parentheses. If I want to move media to, say, Category:Roald Amundsen and it is already in Category:Roald Amundsen (ship), the tool reports that the image has already been in the category without the addition in parentheses (even it hasn't). While a warning message is definitely appreciated (some users make up very strange categories, so it's good to know if there exists something), right now the tool does not allow those moves at all. Interestingly, it doesn't seem to have problems moving from without parentheses up to with. --Ibn Battuta 20:32, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PPPPS: The tool does not recognize "[[category : name]]" (i.e. problems with blank spaces) either.

... and would there be any way of including this great tool into the search results? So that one could search for images and then move them to an new category etc.? --Ibn Battuta 18:02, 22 March 2008 (UTC) --Ibn Battuta 18:00, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PPPPPS: No idea what exactly happened, but when trying to recategorize an image, this happened. --Ibn Battuta 17:50, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Force edit summary[edit]

Hello and than for this nice tool. I check the option “Force edit summary” in my preferences, and if i use cat-a-lot i need to unactivate it, because i can't save fastelly. Cat-a-lot generate a comment, but “Force edit summary” need to me i edit the summary. Maybe something can be improve here.

Another thing, but maybe more hard, is it possible to edit page one-by-one and not open all the images. Maybe it can importe edition time. With http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=foobar.jpg&action=edit&hotcat_newcat=Test%20images it could be really faster.

Feedback[edit]

This is a nice tool but i miss following:

  • Stealth saving - forcing edis summary is non-sense
  • More sophisticated categories handling - Example: removing ALL categories from file(s) BUT a selected category

--Kozuch (talk) 16:13, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Feedback 2[edit]

Congratulations ! This tool is very useful.

  • The only small trouble is when a category has many (like more than 20 subcategories) only the first 10 or so are showing up, and I don't know how to reach the other subcategories.
  • Is there a way to have the changes be saved automatically, without needing to click on the "save" button for each file, as is the case with the "Hot Cat" tool ?
  • Could you please develop this software so that it can be used to move subcategories from one supercategory to another, the same way as you do with files ?

Teofilo (talk) 13:36, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The first problem should be fixed now for categories with at most 50 subcategories. (If there are more than 50 subcategories, all of them will still not be shown.) /Ö 12:52, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Underscore bug[edit]

Cat-a-lot seems to be unable to recognize files using underscores in category names, like Category:Archaeological_site_of_Puymin. I received an error message saying that "Category:Archaeological site of Puymin" (with spaces) is not found on the file's description page.

Feedback 3[edit]

Hi, I really like the tool, but it would be even more useful to me if I could just add a category without having to manually save. It would also be of great usefulness for me if attempts on copying a file into a category whose member it already is would simply be ignored and no window that I have to click on be shown.

Thanks

Problem with the list of subcategories[edit]

These days, instead of listing subcategories, cat-a-lot provides me with a list of all the files in the category. So that :

  • it is impossible to move the files to subcategories
  • the list is so large that the screen is almost totally hidden (the right part of the screen is totally hidden) and it becomes impossible to select the files underneath.

Teofilo (talk) 13:28, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This seems to be a MediaWiki API bug: the "cmnamespace" parameter is being ignored, so the API query is returning all pages in the category, not just subcategories. I've added a partial workaround which simply ignores any results that are not categories, but the script is still likely to be partially broken until this MW bug is fixed; in particular, on large categories, some subcategories will likely not be shown. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 11:04, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cat-a-lot not working for search results[edit]

Since last year this was made to work with search results, but for a while it hasn't being working properly.

When trying to move images, found with a search, into categories using cat-a-lot mode, I am getting errors for almost all files (the only file that worked was an .ogg file). For each image it tries to edit a page without a filename:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:&action=edit

and comes up with the error:

Bad title

The requested page title was invalid, empty, or an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title. It may contain one or more characters which cannot be used in titles.

--Tony Wills (talk) 11:36, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that the title attribute has been removed from links in the software updates of 2009-09-17. The script would need to be rewritten to extract page titles from the hrefs of the links instead of using titles. Lupo 15:14, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Another problem when trying to use it with search results is the in-ability to select images properly. You can select one image, but further clicks on the page just deselect/select that image. (you can also use select all/none ok). --Tony Wills (talk) 18:26, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Main page edits[edit]

If Cat-a-lot doesn't recognize the filename for some reason, it redirects one to http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=&action=edit which means that the {{int:mainpage}} is edited. This happened to me today when I wanted (for testing of Cat-a-lot with the new vector skin) to copy File:Test image commons.png to Category:Picture and image maintenance. Apparently, I'm not the first one with this problem. Upcoming Changes[edit]

As some of you may know, the Usability Initiative has been running a beta over the past several months. Over 570,000 users across all the Wikimedia projects have tried the beta, with about 80% of users keeping the beta after trying. Approximately 7,500 Commons users have tried the beta with 86% of these users still using the beta. Some data about the beta is available here.

Given these encouraging results, we are planning on making the new usability features the default experience for Commons users during the second week of April. We wanted to make users of the most heavily used gadgets aware of this change. We appreciate that many gadgets rely on custom user scripts and site-specific JavaScript; Our changes are not especially related to multimedia usability, but we need your help to make sure the most used tools are compatible with the new interface. If you encounter issues using the beta, please share your feedback on the dedicated page.

A similar message has been placed on the Admin Noticeboard. Also, you may find more information about the Usability Initiative here.

Thanks in advance. Howief (talk) 04:57, 2 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed changes[edit]

I have a new version User:TheDJ/Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js (diff). Changes:

  1. Should work when using the secure server
  2. Uses getElementsByClassName helper function, which is native (fast) if supported
  3. Doesn't walk trough the entire page, just the sections that might hold the image titles.
  4. Uses sajax, which supports both Firefox and IE.
  5. Fixes Cat-a-lot functionality in Search page (still ugly though)
  6. Fixes problem when used in combination with popups

Watch[edit]

Can the script please be changed to make it auto-check the watch this page box? -mattbuck (Talk) 22:00, 29 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is inappropiate for this Gadget. If you prefer to watch them, tick 'Watch pages I create/edit/move' in your Preferences. Or make some custom javascript in your vector.js or monobook.js to check these boxes. –Krinkletalk 15:45, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite. The MediaWiki software takes into account the user's preferences only on the initial edit screen. But this gadget jumps to a successor state of that initial screen (wpDiff), and on that successor state, the preferences are ignored and the form only honors the values passed explicitly. Which makes sense, otherwise any preview or "show changes" would reset any changes in the settings the user might have made.
For this gadget, that means that it should query the user's preferences, and whether they are already watching the page being edited, and then set the value of wpWatchthis appropriately in the form. Otherwise, if the box is left unchecked, the page being edited may even be removed from the user's watchlist.
Lupo 19:13, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it frequently does remove things from my watchlist unless I'm careful. I think it's preferable to have too much watched than too little. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:21, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Apostrophes in names cause freezing[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: --DieBuche (talk) 17:56, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think that apostrophes in file titles are making the current Cat-a-lot freeze in the middle of moving. I was using Cat-a-lot in Category:Union Square, San Francisco (to move about 20 files) and it freezes while trying to move Gump's SF entrance 1.JPG, Gump's SF entrance 2.JPG, and Macy's SF Union Square; July 6 to Category:Shops at Union Square, San Francisco. I've left the files in the old category just in case you want to reproduce this. (There is also MediaWiki talk:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/Archive 1#Bug with apostrophes but I think that is for an older version of Cat-a-lot.) I have not tested this with double-quotes or other related punctuation that might also need to be escaped. --Closeapple (talk) 23:31, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. A few weeks ago, the gadget "cat-a-lot" changed. It is now of a much better performance and speed, thanks ! Unfortunately, its design has a few weak points : the photographs on the bottom line can not be selected anymore (because their bottom borders are hidden by the wide cat-a-lot window); and, in the cat-a-lot window, the "Move Copy"'s are not lined up on the right and are too far (difficult to see the categories they point to). (I use Firefox 2.0 on PC; same pb at my work on Mac). Jack ma (talk) 07:40, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feature request: integrate with Hotcat?[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 11:15, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Currently the tool opens edit windows once one chooses to move or copy files to another category. Instead of opening edit windows, the tool could use the urls from hotcat and directly do the moves. This would simplify working with large number of files (e.g. working through some of Multichill's uploads).

Another option that could be helpful: output a list of selected images for processing otherwise. -- User:Docu at 03:46, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copy thought[edit]

Just a thought, but when using the copy command, it should preserve the sortkey from the current cat to the destination cat. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:51, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Space recognition[edit]

As well as parsing underscores as spaces (see request above), could the script be modified to fix spaces at the start of categories? For instance, Category: People sorts into Category:People, but Cat-a-lot throws a hissy fit when it meets one. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:57, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This new version totally rocks. Thanks a lot!

One minor point: when I tried to move files from cat A to cat B, several files were skipped because they were already in cat B. This is smart, but it would be better if those files were removed from Cat A anyway (per consistency with the "Move" request).

I just came to ask the same.. The problem is that, when it finishes doing the work, you are forced to reaload the page, there's nothing else you can do.. There should be a button leaving you to the previous version of the page, like it used to be before, in order to let you click "remove from this category" the items skipped and still selected that were already in the new category. Further copy problem[edit]

:This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 11:15, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When using the copy command, after returning to the page the images show a large grey infobox, which is fine, but means you can't tell if they're selected or not. Could you make it like the old version - eg just a bold message with no coloured background, so that the highlight is still visible? Thanks. -mattbuck (Talk) 21:29, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to move images into non-existent categories[edit]

Apart from the major problem of the gadget freezing (see "Cat-a-lot choking" and "It doesn't work" above), I do not particularly like the fact that it is no longer possible to move images to categories that have yet to be created. I used to move images to such non-existent categories, then create them by clicking on the red links. Now I have to open a separate tab to create the categories first as they do not appear at all in Cat-a-lot. — Cheers, JackLee talk 11:04, 29 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bug report[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 10:08, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there seems to be a bug in cat-a-lot. Yesterday I tried to copy many files to Category:Location not applicable, but see this example of what happened: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File%3AHemer-Esken1-Asio.JPG&action=historysubmit&diff=54765408&oldid=41753854

The automatically created summary shows what I intended to do ("Cat-a-lot: Copying from Category:People of Hemer to Category:Location not applicable"), but what it actually did is rather strange, namely adding "Category" to both the added and the preceding category. Some photographs can not be selected anymore[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 18:26, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have the same problem, but only in IE7 (at work, in the office). On my own PC at home, in Firefox, everything works just fine. Anyway, even with the problems in IE the cat-a-lot feature is much improved. I spent the last two days cleaning up a few categories, and the new cat-a-lot saved me a lot of time in the process. Thanks, great job! --Tetris L (talk) 13:48, 16 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I love it, but I have a suggestion for improvement...[edit]

:This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I've been using Cat-a-lot on and off for about a month now, and I really love the way it works (in most circumstances). However, I've noticed it seems to struggle when it tries to move images out of a "uncategorized" category, such as the ones for the Fotothek's uncategorized images (the ones linked to from the Main Page): specifically, it doesn't recognize the "uncategorized" designation as a category because it is generated from a template and not from a traditionally-coded category tag. I've noticed from the other tool that I use, HotCat, that this is a problem when I try to replace the category (the +- button), and I get the same result as when I use Cat-a-lot (it opens up the "edit" page). However, when I press the "add" button (the + button) in HotCat, it adds the new category that I want while the "uncategorized" template seems to self-destruct, thus bypassing the edit page and working much more efficiently. In short, I'm wondering if you can mimic HotCat's "add" function and integrate it into Cat-a-lot along with the "move" and "copy" functions. I don't know much about the coding, but like I said earlier, HotCat's "add" function does it perfectly. Cat-a-lot would, in my mind, be a whole lot better (at least better suited to projects like the Fotothek one) with such an addition. Thanks!

TFCforever (talk) 16:26, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As you've noticed, neither Cat-a-lot nor HotCat can really handle categories that are included via templates. However, HotCat does have a feature where it removes any {{Uncategorized}} templates when you add a category. I suppose something similar could probably be added to Cat-a-lot. (A while ago I wrote a Perl script for my own use that works a lot like Cat-a-lot, and I included that feature in it. All it really takes is one regexp.) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 18:39, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New version looks good[edit]

:This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the numerous changes, especially the ones I suggested. This may save my Firefox, as I tend to edit about 10,000 pages at once.

That being said, could you install an option to open the pages and edit manually if checked? Quite often I use catalot as a convenient way to add a single cat to many images, but also do fixing on them as I go - removing detritus, changing category order, etc. It would be useful to still have this option if required, though it should be off by default. -mattbuck (Talk) 14:05, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Two more things.
  1. It won't let you copy to a non-existant category anymore, even when you try to copy to "Category:Existant category|sortkey". Can you add this ability back?
    Huh... I hadn't realized people might try to insert sortkeys that way. That would require some tweaks to the new replacement code to avoid duplicate sortkeys. (Nothing major, just leave the "$1" out of the substitution if targetcat contains "|".) It might be better to add some kind of separate UI feature for that, though. I assume you're mostly doing this one file at a time? —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:59, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    Sometimes. I was trying to copy about 5 files with a sortkey to a category earlier. In the past I've also used it to copy to multiple categories at once. -mattbuck (Talk) 22:04, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  2. When it's done copying, it gives you the popup telling you to reload the page, but this is quite unhelpful compared to the old version's noting which files had been copied so you could keep working without worrying about duplication.
    I agree, it would be better to just mark which files have been processed. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:59, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The new Cat-a-lot worked fine for me – once. After that, it hung and crashed the browser on two occasions. Any idea what the problem is? — Cheers, JackLee talk 06:56, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Same for me. I tried others brousers (FF, Opera, Chrome), each one could do 20 or 30 edits, then they would'nt want to know anything (even after being restarted). --Coyau (talk) 15:51, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I closed the frozen tab, reloaded "Category:Ships in Singapore" in a new tab, and tried to move just two images. Yay! Cat-a-lot is now working fine for me. — Cheers, JackLee talk 08:18, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cat-a-lot seems to be slowing to a crawl for me in the past week or so. Is this due to a server slowdown on Commons, or is it something else? I frequently find it hanging before finishing its work (i.e. when the "X of Y files..." lightbox pops up) and I eventually end up having to reload the page to return to the category page. Any ideas? --Dragfyre (talk) 17:25, 15 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Use with "gallery details" gadget?[edit]

:This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to combine cat-a-lot with "gallery details" (another gadget) on search results, but apparently this is not possible. To reproduce, (1) search, (2) click gallery details on the result page, (3), activate cat-a-lot (4) try to select one of the images.

It would help if that was possible.  Docu  at 12:04, 25 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't work[edit]

:This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't work anymore. It freezes (at the second photo) when I move 2 photos. And the display is not convenient (alinements), the lower part is too large; I also have to go down a category to move a photo into it. Regards, Jack ma (talk) 07:00, 28 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This feature seems now to be fixed. The problem remains when dealing with many categories: not all are visible. A side bar to go up and down may be suitable. With Firefox on PC, the "Move Copy"'s get shifted (not aligned vertically) and the Cat-a-lot section occupies the whole bottom half of the window in size. Cat-a-lot on search results[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

For searches like Special:Search/Crested Pool -incategory:"Crested_Pool", it would be helpful if cat-a-lot would open directly with Category:Crested Pool pre-filled.  Docu  at 06:54, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To save a few clicks: cat-a-lot activated, category name pre-filled, all images selected. One just would need to click to add (or first de-select some of the results). --  Docu  at 16:25, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Another plus would be if one could vary the thumbnail size of search results (larger e.g.) or display them in category page like format. This hasn't much to do with cat-a-lot though ;) --  Docu  at 06:16, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BTW Bawolff made a script to display larger thumbnails (User:Bawolff/quickImageSearch and User:Bawolff/quickImageSearch.js), I tried to customize cat-a-lot to work with a modified version of that. For now, it works for the first page of results. --  Docu  at 03:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Small problems[edit]

Screen copy: the bottom range cannot be selected

Hello, I still have the same problem: I cannot select images on the bottom line (bottom border is hidden) and the "Move Copy" are too far on the right (accumulated blanks). Furthermore, the bottom area is apparently too large (depending of the computer: if Mac, it's ok: it occupies only the bottom right quarter of the window). I use Firefox on PC. Thanks, Jack ma (talk) 07:35, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I don't have the yellow part extend so far as in your print screen, but sometimes part of the images can't be selected.
For those, a workaround is to navigate to a parent or subcategory of the category one is dealing with. After selecting the images, one can still pick the sub-category one is looking for (in the print screen to the left, besides "Panoramics in Aquitaine" one could move images to "Panoramics in Pyrénées-Atlantiques" or "Panoramics in France by region").
Another workaround is to enter a non-existing category before selecting images, select images, and then enter the category one is looking for. --  Docu  at 10:57, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
✓ fixed, the window is now resizable--DieBuche (talk) 18:28, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Horizontal scaling needed
Can the window be resized horizontally as well? Currently when going to e.g. Category:Anemone cat-a-lot looks like the image to the left... the result is that the move/copy to the right of some subcategory actually moves/copies it to another subcategory. This is for Firefox 3.6.15 on Linux. /Lokal_Profil 12:39, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Moved to "2 problems" section below. /Lokal_Profil 15:14, 6 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A recent fix made the situation worse for me. On IE7 I'm getting the cat-a-lot window that takes the whole width at the bottom of the screen (as shown in the first image to the right), but, as of recently, the text to the left is too far to the left, half off the screen, so that it can't be read. And due to the lack of a horizontal scrollbar, there is no way to access it. --Tetris L (talk) 12:50, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am new to Cat-a-lot, but I can't use it as I have the same problem (half off the screen, no horizontal scroll bar). I use IE7 too. HenkvD (talk) 09:43, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actualy I think the alignment (on IE7) is wrong. It shows a lot of blank space (more than half of the sceen) between the categories and the Copy Move buttons. HenkvD (talk) 09:55, 15 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For many categories[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Screen copy: the pink part occupies nearly the whole window

The bottom area lacks of vertical side bar (on the right) when many categories. In this case, starting from Category:Stained glass windows in Dordogne, we'd like to move some photographs down into Category:Stained glass windows of Église Saint-Georges (Périgueux), but it doesn't appear (only the 16 first subcategories appear). Also (see screen copy), the "Move Copy" get mixed, confusing the reading, or modifying: when I click on the "Move" of a category, it moves the files into the wrong category. Jack ma (talk) 14:19, 8 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

From the screenshot, I would guess that you are using firefox 2 or atleast a version before 3.6. If that is the case, I'd strongly recommend updating to the latest version. --77.201.239.121 12:09, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copying images from categories added through templates[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, one can't use cat-a-lot to move images added to categories through templates (e.g. by {{PD-user}} to Category:PD-user). It should be possible to copy these to another category though.

For this operation, the edit summary could be "adding to ..", instead of "copying from .. to ..".

A workaround is to search for the template and use cat-a-lot on the search results. --  Docu  at 12:37, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Two probably dumb questions?[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to move a bunch of files from Category:SVG maps to Category:SVG maps of the United Kingdom.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand:

"Instead of navigating through clicking, you can also enter a category name in the text field above the list, and go to that category by clicking the button."

I understand that I can go down the tree, but of course "of the United Kingdom" is way too far down the list, so it doesn't show. So:

  • Do I type "Category:SVG maps of the United Kingdom" or just "SVG maps of the United Kingdom" in the edit box at the top of the list?
  • What button? The edit box at the top of the list goes all the way to the right side of the window. There is no button below that seems to work.

I'm running Firefox 3.6.13 on XP Pro. I attempted to reproduce this on IE, but Cat-a-Lot doesn't come up at all even though it is checked in my preferences.

Remove category from search results (feature request)[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes it can be useful if one could remove a category from a some (or all images) listed on search results. For now, one can only add images. --  Docu  at 03:34, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You can do that easily with AWB, although it certainly isn't as fast. Simply do a search for the category and replace with an empty field.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 18:04, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info, but most thing done by cat-a-lot could also be done by AWB. --  Docu  at 01:56, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cat-a-lot in non-existing category

Cat-a-lot shows up in the wrong place if category do not exist. See for example here. I am using vector skin in Firefox 4.0.1. --Jarekt (talk) 19:32, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm currently getting this problem in all categories (whether they exist or not) on my Firefox 3.5.3 browser. Selections are not being highlighted, and the Cat-a-lot tool is appearing as unformatted text in the bottom-left corner of the page. Cat-a-lot & Uncategorized[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 17:34, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Seems that it does not work any more on {{Uncategorized}} (Category:Media_needing_categories) categories like this one. Neither move nor copy. Always complains that the source category is missing. Something was changed by DieBuche some days ago, maybe this causes the defect. The tool was valuable for categorizing uncategorized images. Would be a pity if it doesn't work anymore for that purpose. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 14:41, 31 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have the same problem. "Copy" operation should work even if source category was added by a template. --Jarekt (talk) 17:49, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nice tools, if it worked. Aproximatly only 30% of the moves work. The rest shows only the spinning wheel and hangs (firefox 5.0.1). --LoKiLeCh 20:17, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
"Move" works for me as of today, but still it would be very nice if the tool could remove {{Uncategorized}} from the description, as it's been proposed several times on this talk. Nemo 17:50, 26 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 17:34, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's possible to add sorting keys to categories using Cat-a-lot but not to remove them. For example, let's say I am using Cat-a-lot to change "[[Category:Foo|Sorting Key]]" to "[[Category:Boo]]". Even though I delete the sorting key, it reappears after the category has been changed to "Boo". Can this be fixed? — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:58, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

autocomplete[edit]

:This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 16:59, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(we did it in the cat-a-lot version in hewiki, but i suggest to integrate into code):

it is relatively simple to add "autocomplete" capability to the "'Enter category name'" input control.

basically, you replace the

mw.loader.using('jquery.ui.dialog', function () {

line at the very end with

mw.loader.using(['jquery.ui.dialog', 'jquery.ui.autocomplete'], function () {

and at the top, you replace

		$('#cat_a_lot_searchcatname').keypress(function (e) {
			if (e.which == 13) catALot.updateCats($(this).val());
		});

with

		$('#cat_a_lot_searchcatname')
			.keypress(function (e) {
				if (e.which == 13)
					catALot.updateCats($(this).val());
			})
			.autocomplete({
				source: function(request, response) {
					catALot.doAPICall({action:'opensearch', search: request.term, namespace: 14},
						function(data){
							if(data[1])
								response($(data[1]).map(function(index,item){return item.replace(/.*:/, '');}));
						}
					);
				},
				open:function(){
					$(".ui-autocomplete")
						.position({
							my: $('body').is('.rtl') ? "left bottom" : "right bottom",
							at: $('body').is('.rtl') ? "left top" : "right top",
							of: $('#cat_a_lot_searchcatname')
						});
				}
		});

we find the autocomplete functionality quite useful.

Moving failed[edit]

This section was archived on a request by: DieBuche (talk) 15:53, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to move a group of files from a non-existing (misspelled) category Category:Františkovy lázně to the right category Category:Františkovy Lázně. Cat-a-lot reported no problems and no errors but it removed file from the wrong category only and didn't added them to the right category. (See [4].) There exist more problems with moving from non-existing category or moving to a new category which isn't created yet. --ŠJů (talk) 04:24, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problems appear especially if the goal category has a similar name with the original category. If the names are utterly different, the moving is correct. --ŠJů (talk) 17:14, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moving from Category:Kostel Panny Marie pod Řetězem to Category:Kostel Panny Marie pod řetězem was also erroneous: files were removed from the first category but not added to the second one. Reverse moving or copying also failed. --ŠJů (talk) 01:31, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

These moves appear to be between categories that are identical except for upper/lowercase. I believe I fixed it now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 16:42, 20 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Only one of the symptoms. The problem is with the i flag in the regexbuilder – I introduced it here.. --DieBuche (talk) 07:37, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
So it's all about the category prefix. Is this script intended to work at other wikis as-is? If no, just go back to "[Cc][Aa][Tt][Ee][Gg][Oo][Rr][Yy]". If yes, take a look at function autoLocalize() in HotCat: that does what you'd need here. Note also that there may be more than one localized equivalent of "Category". zh-WP for instance has "cat", "category", "分类", and "分類". In either case, make only the category namespace name case insensitive, and remove the "i" flag from the regex. Further note: depending on the settings of the wiki, you'll also have to make the first character of the category name (not namespace) case insensitive. See capitalizePageNames in HotCat. Lupo 08:07, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's directly imported by some wikis, so [Cc][Aa]... would break them. But thanks for the hints, I'll have a look at those functions--DieBuche (talk) 16:51, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not working[edit]

I was trying to categorise a load of images with Cat-a-lot, and I'm used to it stopping abruptly about halfway through, but when it does that it normally categorises the first half. Today, it's been stopping abruptly, like on "editing page 26 of 42", but hasn't even categorised the first 25. Very frustrating, because it's a very useful tool when it at least half works. Hangs (October 2011)[edit]

I am getting constant hangs with cat-a-lot, as has been described in the posts above for at least two months now. I am moving images from 'Narrowboats' to 'Narrowboats in England', using firefox 7.0.1, and Cat-a-lot hangs after a random number of images - could be after 3, could be after 53. There is no particular reason for this that I can see. This seems to be a hot issue, and renders the tool useless for some of us. When is this likely to be fixed? Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 14:15, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bump? If this is not being fixed soon, should this be classified as 'unstable' rather than 'stable'? Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 16:15, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Same for me (FF 3.6, Linux, Monobook) since ages (months, years?). --Saibo (Δ) 19:20, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not really useless, you just need to reload... Anyway I tried to reproduce it by doing ca. 1400 changes ( [5] ), but it unfortunately (?) never hung in Chrome or Firefox.
Then I disabled my internet connection for seconds at a time & experienced the thing you are describing. Are you maybe on Wifi?

So from now on, if an edit fails/timeouts/whatever the script will try 4 more times to save the page. If your still have this, have a look whether you see any errors reported in the console. --DieBuche (talk) 19:44, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that reloading exactly doesn't help if you have selected some files from a cat or search result list - all selection is gone and you need to figure out which ones were already processed and which not - therefore it is useless. I frequently open the files in tabs instead and use hotcat - that is faster for this task. I will see if I can find JS errors. Oh, no: I am not on a WiFi and I usually do not have connection problems. Thanks for trying to help! :) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:55, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How do I get to the console? Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 23:13, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Firefox (3.6): Ctrl+Shift+J Open it before you start cat-a-lot. And only look for "Errors" (should be filterable) - no warnings. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:54, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Again I want to ask if there is a known reason for the hangs that occurs to me almost every time I use cat-a-lot, whether in Firefox or Opera. the gadget would be so useful to me, if it would work like it should.--Funfood 13:47, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unexpected stops[edit]

Hi,

Since some months, I don't know why but cat-a-lot stops half the way. Same bugs for every categories I tried, when I move 5, 50, or 500 files. Sometimes, 90% is done ; sometimes just 10 %. NavPopups[edit]

Currently there is an incompatibility with NavPopups. If you hover a filename and then try to start an action with catALot, it will fail because NavPopups removes any title attribute.

How could I fix it until here is a solution:

Still having problems after doing so? Please report them. Thanks in advance -- RE rillke questions? 22:09, 15 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

seeing that Mediawiki:Gadget-popups.js is a shim loading the navpop gadget from enwiki (a very sensible thing to do), i propose to use the snippet used in hewiki, i.e., add, just before the current call to mw.loader.load, the following code:
// this gadget wipes the "title" attribute of links. however, Gadget cat-a-lot depends on the "title" attribute.
// so if we are in category space (14), and if this user also uses cat-a-lot,
// turn off the title-wiping behavior by setting global variable "removeTitles" to false.
// as explained in cat-a-lot talk page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js
if (wgNamespaceNumber == 14)
mw.loader.using('mediawiki.user', function(){
    if (mw.user.options.get('gadget-Cat-a-lot'))
        window.removeTitles = false;
})

The cat-a-lot-window should have the possibility to get minimized if a specific category has been chosen out of the popped-up ones. possible bug[edit]

so while trying to understand the previous issue (cat-a-lot eats the remainder of the file unders some circumstances) i came across something i think is an unrelated bug: in function regexbuilder, we try to escape regex metacharacters, but IMO we miss some pretty important ones, specifically wildcards, parenthesis closing brackets and closing curly brackets.

		// escape regexp metacharacters (= any ASCII punctuation except _)
		category = category.replace(/([!-\/:-@\[-^`{-~])/g, '\\$1');

imo should be

		// escape regexp metacharacters (= any ASCII punctuation except _, wildcards, parenthesis, brackets)
		category = category.replace(/([!-\/:-@-^`{-~\(\)\[\]\?\.\*\}])/g, '\\$1');

peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 14:00, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

or better yet - use $.escapeRE()... קיפודנחש (talk) 13:36, 3 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All these characters are covered by the regexp. Note the pattern [!-\/:-@] for example. This is something like [a-zA-Z]. -- Rillke(q?) 18:31, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

check can ever pass on Commons, since our content language is (nominally) English. You might want to ask User:DieBuche, who wrote the sample code, what they were actually trying to do. However, my guess would be that the first conditional should actually use "wgUserLanguage" instead of "wgContentLanguage". Also, it might make sense for both comparisons to say == 'fr' instead of != 'en'. Or maybe even make it something like
        if ( mw.config.get('wgUserLanguage').split('-')[0] == 'fr' ) {
or
        if ( /^fr(-|$)/.test( mw.config.get('wgUserLanguage') ) ) {
to allow for the possibility of language variants. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 11:30, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do not add files to watchlist[edit]

Would it be possible to add an option so that changed image pages are not added to the watchlist? I sometimes move hundreds of images and the all end up in my watchlist although I do not want them there. -- H005 21:02, 23 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does no one else have this problem or wish? Or are there any workarounds? -- H005 12:41, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, radical solution : you can deactivate in your prefs "Add pages I edit to my watchlist" (Watchlist tab). It works ;-). Jean-Fred (talk) 13:01, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting option. I have almost 100000 items on my watch list and I often avoid using cat-a-lot to avoid that there are too much non important files on my watchlist. My watchlist can only display the last 12 to 24 hours, which is a pain. --Foroa (talk) 13:19, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The direct link is Special:Preferences#preftab-5 to change your watchlist preferences. I would like more specific watchlist options just for files moved by Cat-a-lot. --Timeshifter (talk) 18:10, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Watchoptions for the different actions by Cat-A-Lot is on the feature-request list. Newly implemented, there is a pref for all Cat-A-Lot actions. -- Rillke(q?) 19:58, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Improvement[edit]

{{Editprotected}}

Hi, I ported this gadget to zhwiki and made some modifications. Maybe they should be merged back:

  • ✓ Done [6]: Allow copy/move/removal of pages.
  • ✓ Done [7]: importScriptURI does not work here. I changed it to mw.loader.load to make it work.
  • ✓ Done Keep in mind that the the .text() is limited in categories. [8]: If you merged "Allow copy/move/removal of pages." you should merge this as well to make it compatible with Navigation popups.
  • ✓ Done by DieBuche, as far as I can see. [9]: Allow it to edit existing categories defined in pages using namespace aliases.

Liangent (talk) 07:58, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but what is the advantage of removal over moving to a category that they are probably already in? I can see a drawback in that with removal you could potentially leave a page completely uncategorised. With a tool that lets you change categories on a file without knowing what other categories that file is in I think this would be risky, unless of course you could add a feature to not allow catalot to remove the last remaining category from an image. WereSpielChequers (talk) 08:37, 9 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The removal feature was already available for files. What I did was only extend it to pages. Liangent (talk) 03:32, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

One more fix to make it work in categories defined as NOGALLERY: [10]. Liangent (talk) 05:34, 11 November 2011 (UTC) ✓ Done[reply]

Thank you for the suggested improvements. I think the "Allow copy/move/removal of pages" needs some agreement by the users. Perhaps I will set up a targeted watchlist note. -- RE rillke questions? 19:43, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Allow categorization of pages other than gallery boxes (files)[edit]

It is technically possible to alter the gadget to allowing categorizing pages. This would mean, when you click "select all", you might get unexpected results. Please discuss this matter here. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 21:39, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Several people have asked for this; I think it makes sense. For the "all" issue, how about changing the "select" buttons? Make it Select all items / all files / none. Rd232 (talk) 22:12, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, there is also a request to do the same for subcategories, and I think that would be useful as well. Rd232 (talk) 22:18, 29 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Would be a quite useful feature. For categories & images in galleries / pages as well. --Herzi Pinki (talk) 19:14, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW, we do use cat-a-lot (well, a bastardized version of it, anyway) in hewiki for pages in space 0 rather than for files. (and oh, by the way, our bastardize version does subcats also). this version is based on the may 4, 2011 version, so in order to merge back our changes one would need to do some work, i guess. our local changes, apart from the translation, are not huge, tough. peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 21:06, 30 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In general, it might make sense, but not necessarily for Commons. Here galleries (i.e. "articles" or pages in namespace 0) are generally only in categories with the same name. --  Docu  at 10:13, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
this is absolutely correct. however, usage of "i18n" function and numerous translations lead one to believe that this gadget was meant for more than just commons. so, for wikis other than commons, the ability to handle mass categorization of articles in space 0 is very useful - at least we found it to be very useful in hewiki. peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 18:59, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
True. Subcategories are probably much more useful to include for Commons. However, "pages" also applies in other namespaces, eg Help, Commons, Template. This is of much less interest to most, but categorising those correctly also helps. Rd232 (talk) 07:40, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of pages would be really great feature :) At the moment, od sr.wp we are using the version from he.wp (thanks קיפודנחש for pointing that out), but we would like to continue using the script from the Commons because it's easier when you don't have to worry about updating. micki 07:06, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Allowing recat of pages and subcats would be a welcome feature. Pitke (talk) 07:39, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am very much in favor of Cat-a-lot being able to recat pages and other categories. It would save an immense amount of time when fixing categorization. Beyond My Ken (talk) 15:15, 10 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes please. If we had such a feature I would certainly make use of it. WereSpielChequers (talk) 10:56, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There is a new pref screen, which allows you enabling these features. But they may not work stable. -- Rillke(q?) 19:31, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cat-a-lot "vandalizes" page[edit]

I do not know if that bug was reported before but in this edit, a user managed to remove all the categories and the license from a file when he made mistake with cat-a-lot. --Jarekt (talk) 17:56, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a truncated POST request. Token should be sent last to avoid this. Also Cat-A-Lot should not flood the API. -- Rillke(q?) 18:09, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I do not understand the source of this bad edit. Is it something that is likely to happen again, or is it a problem that was fixed since then ? --Jarekt (talk) 13:08, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Since the token is now the last parameter, it is unlikely to happen again after my updates yesterday/today. Some data was lost while transmitting to the WMF server. Having the token last, such edits should not occur again because the server will send a badtoken error if the request is truncated instead of doing the edit. Of course, if there is a wrong regexp in the code, it may happen again but in this case the problem is reproducible, which wasn't the case here and at #Truncated texts when using cat-a-lot and other oddities. -- Rillke(q?) 13:48, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Version 3.1[edit]

I notice some changes that perhaps aren't intentional. I can no longer select images one by one. Only select all/none options seem to work and if selecting all images then their filenames are no longer highlighted using yellow colour (just shows the number of images that are selected). Also the "Cat-a-lot" link that shows up with this script loaded is now fixed to bottom corner of the page not on that position of the window where I scroll. Also, unlike earlier, some other links (remove, select all/none, pref, cat field) are attached to this link without having clicked on "Cat-a-lot" link in the first place to expand these other options. When doing so and clicking "Cat-a-lot", the rest of the options (parent- and subcats) are shown above the other options. I'm using Firefox 15. 88.196.241.249 09:41, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 88.196.241.249, how are you using Cat-A-Lot?
It seems like CSS is missing.
If you are using it with withJS=, it is fixed with this version (3.2).
If you use some importScript('MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js')-technique, please simply add an importStylesheet('MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.css'); or, better use mw.loader.load('ext.gadget.Cat-a-lot'); instead of the two imports (this will also prevent caching issues). Cheers Rillke(q?) 11:47, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see, I wasn't aware of CSS page nor different loading schemas between a gadget and withJS, which I'm using. It works now, thanks. 88.196.241.249 12:41, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
