CentralNotice campaign start date[edit]

Why CentralNotice campaign starts on 18 March, i.e. two days after POTY2016 start? Shouldn't it start yesterday or at least today? jdx Re: 08:21, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

CN will start a few days later because of beta testing period. --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:14, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Misnamed categories[edit]

Once again all two-dimensional works of art, including prints, posters, an architectural elevation, etc., have been inaccurately categorised as "paintings". Also, "sculptures and reliefs" is redundant – a relief is a sculpture – and similarly a fresco is a painting, despite there being a category for "frescos, ceilings and stained glass" separate from "paintings". This is not the standard I would expect from a showcase of the best work on Commons. I am sure I've complained about this before (for more than one year) but I can't seem to find the relevant discussions. It's a shame for the professionalism of the images to be undermined by the poor categorisation. Ham II (talk) 21:22, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Ham II. I just saw Commons_talk:Picture_of_the_Year/2015/Help#Question_from_Ham_II, but rillke went inactive since then and I'm unaware of this discussion :( . Btw, if you are willing to help out next year and sort out this issue, please feel free to do so --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 03:55, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Zhuyifei1999: Yes, please count me in next year. In case I, like rilke, am inactive by then, my preferred titles for those categories would be Artworks (2D), Artworks (3D) (this would still include reliefs) and Ceilings. Ham II (talk) 17:53, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

CentralNotice banner uses deprecated code[edit]

When users click on the close button, it causes the following warning in the console: Use of "toggleNotice" is deprecated. Use mw.centralNotice method instead. Helder 14:39, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@He7d3r: Thanks, i also added a notice to the CN help page. --Steinsplitter (talk) 14:50, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

At the above location there's a string of text that says "Tachileik Myanmar Kayan-FP category: People-Woman-03.jpg" where the image should be and underneath it it says "Vote for this picture" which is redlinked, Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 16:23, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Steinsplitter: --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:37, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed, the voting page (!) has been moved whiteout leaving a redirect. --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:58, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Steinsplitter & Zhuyifei1999 :), –Davey2010Talk 17:06, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from LoveEverybodyUnconditionally[edit]

I cannot vote for anything. Voting buttons do not work. Am I missing something? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LoveEverybodyUnconditionally (talk • contribs)

You're not eligible --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 23:59, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Prabhakant Shukla[edit]

In vote page for best picture, My vote option is not working. So please help me in this regard. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prabhakant Shukla (talk • contribs) 06:14, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You're not eligible --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:34, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not eligible either. I would really love to vote for images, but because my email was lost last year, my new account was made before the mininum registration date. --RainbowCardboard (talk) 4:38, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
If you can't access your old account, you can't vote this year. Sorry :( --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:24, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from PiemanXC[edit]

I'm unable to vote for any pictures this year and I know I'm eligible because I've voted the past two years with the same account. PiemanXC (talk) 17:26, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@PiemanXC: Can you please be moor precise, what isn't working exactly? --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:30, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Sorry, I mean that the vote button next to the images in round 1 is greyed out and I can't click it in any of the categories. PiemanXC (talk) 19:05, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please try to purge your browser cache. Do you use an outdated browser? Otherwise you can vote by hand. --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:19, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I cleared my cookies and that fixed the issue. Probably should have tried that in the first place. Thank you for your assistance! PiemanXC (talk) 20:01, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Sgbotsford[edit]

When I load a page of pictures to view, briefly under each pic are the words 'vote for this picture' Then this vanishes, and a greyed out 'vote' icon appears in the lower left. Click it does nothing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sgbotsford (talk • contribs) 02:29, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You're not eligible --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:32, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Mushushu[edit]

Isn't File:View of Delft, by Johannes Vermeer.jpg in the wrong category? Shouldn't it be in "paintings"? --Mushushu (talk) 21:13, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As far i can see it contains a settlement, but it is a painting as well. Nobody changed it (when it still was possible before the contest), thus i don't think we can change it now. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:33, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from EoRdE6[edit]

Is it possible to see a list of R1 candidates ordered by number of votes? Want to see where various images placed and I can't seem to find this anywhere. EoRdE6(Come Talk to Me!) 14:57, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I made a script to count the votes and User:Zhuyifei1999/poty/potyvotesR1.py/2016 is the raw output. Feel free to parse / analyze it however you like --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 15:19, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Steinsplitter make the output into a table: Commons:Picture of the Year/2016/Committee/Transparency/R1 results --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 16:29, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from jdx[edit]

@Steinsplitter: What is the meaning of m:CNBanner:POTY 2016 R2-credits/en? It doesn't make sense to me. IMO it should be "amalavida.tv / CC BY-SA 2.0 (2014 winner)" or something like "Example picture (2014 winner)". jdx Re: 09:45, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It is a link to the credit, in WM project (such as WP) we are never crediting the file directly but with a link. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:04, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Steinsplitter: There is <noinclude>sub</noinclude>st:REVISIONUSER which generates wrong section title when someone presses the button at the top of this page. IMO noinclude is redundant, but I'm not sure, so I don't want to touch the code. jdx Re: 09:58, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, thanks! :) --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:17, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Kaganer[edit]

{{Edit request}}

In the Commons:Picture of the Year/2016 needs to replace phrase "In the first and current round, you may vote for as many images as you like." - in the R2 applied another rule. For using past translations, needs to

  1. commenting "T:6" item
  2. get "T:23" item from Commons:Picture of the Year/2015 (without number), and import all translations of this

--Kaganer (talk) 22:52, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, which is correct - unlimited voting in round 2 or three votes in round 2? Royalbroil 13:46, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done Awesome! Thank you! Steinsplitter (talk) 14:09, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But where imported translations of "T:23" and "T:27" ("T:25" and "T:26" now)??? --Kaganer (talk) 23:31, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
User:Steinsplitter - Please note, this is these same mistake, as in the past years:
  1. Initially should be included all messages, including hidden (commented), for all rounds and stages.
  2. Obsoleted mesages cannot be deleted, but may be hidden only (by addition comment's tag) - "T:6" should be restored with comment tag (for using in future). See Commons:Picture of the Year/2015 as exaple - all unused messages was kept and awailable for reading and using for future using.

Question from Gérald Garitan[edit]

--Steinsplitter (talk) 09:31, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Yeerge[edit]

Is there somewhere a discussion page to discuss the quality of the pictures, so the voters can tell why the voted this or another picture, to tell what they don't like so the jury, the voters and the photographers may know why to choose this picture or why this picture is higher ranked than another, etc...?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Yeerge (talk • contribs) 12:54, 9 April 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]

Question from Owi68[edit]

NO PUEDO VOTAR NO ME DEJA LA PAGINA— Preceding unsigned comment added by Owi68 (talk • contribs) 17:17, 9 April 2017‎ (UTC)[reply]

Para votar, debes ser un usuario de Wikimedia establecido con más de 75 ediciones antes del 1 de enero de 2017. (Gracias a ABC Translate) Wakari07 (talk) 21:31, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Groobfield[edit]

Rule two for eligibility states, " This user account must have at least 75 live edits on any single Wikimedia project.. " What constitutes a "live edit" and what would be a Wikimedia project (is it any Wiki-x site? [i.e. Wikipedia, Wikivoyages, Wiktionary, etc?])?

Live edit means any edit that's visible on your Special:Contributions page (i.e. not an edit to a deleted page). And for Wikimedia project, please see w:Wikimedia_project... --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 11:57, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Danhomer[edit]

Is there a way to easily download the originals of all the finalists at once? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danhomer (talk • contribs) 01:59, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Try Commons:Imker_(batch_download) on the gallery page. Might work, might fail; I haven't tried --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 12:00, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ari in Jericho[edit]

This is confusing! I want to ask a question about the Images contest. I didn't see a place to save my choices- so I don't know if they were, in fact, saved and contributed to the voting! <ari@zion.tc> — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ari in Jericho (talk • contribs) 08:31, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

They are saved. Thanks for your participation :) --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 12:01, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Has Picture of the Year turned political?[edit]

Surprised to find as many as 5 images from Russia and 2 from Ukraine; two countries in conflict. Seems there must have been a consolidated effort in both places to influence the selection. I see this is "Round 2", but I never saw any notifications about a prior round. WinTakeAll (talk) 00:59, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The CN notice was set up for R1. The notice should have worked. As for the politics, well, the counting of the votes in R1 is public. I can't speculate about why there are many Russian and Ukraine images in R2. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 05:08, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ultragp7[edit]

Why Wikipedia some stuff, some rules from Europe to make Wikipedia, easier, faster and safier? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ultragp7 (talk • contribs) 17:34, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Você pode esclarecer sua pergunta, por favor? (Graças ao ABC Translate) Can you please clarify your question? Wakari07 (talk) 21:42, 11 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Marcelmolendijk[edit]

why can't i vote? i return here especially for voting but i can't :-( — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcelmolendijk (talk • contribs) 23:30, 19 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You have no global edits at all (expect this one), so you can't vote. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:09, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from me[edit]

This should be disqualified due to nudity. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.246.2.134 (talk • contribs)

Why? Nudity in itself is not an argument, since Wikipedia is not censored. Wakari07 (talk) 21:16, 26 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Benimation[edit]

When can we expect the results to be available? --Benimation (talk) 12:02, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In a few days at most. FDMS and I are currently working on it --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 13:41, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Benimation: User:Zhuyifei1999/poty/potyvotesR2.py/2016 at the bottom, unconfirmed results. EoRdE6(Come Talk to Me!) 01:38, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Jdx[edit]

I am looking for an advice what to do with this edit? Revert it or make it translatable? Pinging the author: @The wub: . --jdx Re: 10:23, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jdx: I was just trying to help with the problem reported at the village pump. It seems to work, you can make it translatable. Thanks! the wub "?!" 13:48, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
