Question from Seagull123[edit]

Shouldn't Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/v/Sunser over Hanoi After the Rain.jpg be a redirect to Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/v/Sunset over Hanoi After the Rain.jpg (sunser to sunset), as the actual image file File:Sunser over Hanoi After the Rain.jpg redirects to File:Sunset over Hanoi After the Rain.jpg? Thanks. Seagull123 (talk) 18:24, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed There'll be more such cases; in the end we'll have to carefully examine the result and merge the votes. -- Rillke(q?) 18:47, 28 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ham II[edit]

Why are prints, drawings, photographs and banknotes included in the Paintings section? This has been a recurrent problem with Picture of the Year, which spoils the professionalism of its presentation and detracts from the superb quality of the images. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ham II (talk • contribs) 21:01, 30 March 2016‎ (UTC)[reply]

Here's my suggestion: Rename the category to Graphic arts [in theory this could include photos too but we don't have to], and recategorize photos like this (could be people and human activity). Alternatively, we would essentially have to enumerate everything listed at Graphic arts.
@Ham II: , do you think this suggestion sounds reasonable? How would you solve this issue? Bear in mind that we might want to re-use the category in next year's POTY, too - there's some translation and administration effort behind it. Thanks for bringing up this important matter! -- Rillke(q?) 03:27, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Rillke: Thanks for the suggestion, but I think "two-dimensional artworks" would be preferable to "graphic arts". The oxforddictionaries.com definition of the latter is "The visual arts based on the use of line and tone rather than three-dimensional work or the use of colour." – i.e. according to one understanding of the term paintings ("based on... the use of colour") would be ruled out.
I'm having another look at the categories and "Sculptures and reliefs" isn't ideal either as "relief" is a subclass of "sculpture". The category includes fountains, coins and a gold funerary mask from Mycenae, so perhaps "three-dimensional artworks" would be better there.
I'm not too keen on "fresco[e]s" being in a separate category from "paintings". There is also a floor mosaic in that category which doesn't belong there. My suggestion for that category would be "Murals, mosaics, stained glass and ceilings". Ham II (talk) 06:59, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Miya, Odisha1, Uğurkent, and Beria: what do you think? -- Rillke(q?) 17:07, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Technically we can, I believe, change only the displayed name without moving/changing the pagename itself. The name of the category of this kind was not always "Paintings". I list them below just for information:

Category name Page name year
Artworks: Paintings, engravings, lithographs, and similar artworks
Artworks: Sculptures, Vitral and Inscriptions
Maps, diagrams and illustrations
../Paintings
../Sculptures
../Maps
2012
Diagrams, encyclopedic illustrations, emblems, and maps
Non-photographic art, drawings, posters and stamps
../Diagrams
../Non-photographic
2011
Non-photographic art, posters, stamps, and historic maps ../Artworks 2010, 2009
Graphic art and maps ../Graphic art and maps 2008, 2007
(no categories at all) 2006

@Miya: Thanks; that's useful to know. What about the years 2013 and 2014? I don't mind too much if the categories aren't changed this year; I'd just like them to be right in the future. Ham II (talk) 15:16, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ham II: , you can find here: 2014 and 2013.--miya (talk) 23:13, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Miya: Ah yes, the years when sculptures were in the category "Objects, rocks and miscellaneous"! Things have improved since then, I'll admit! Thank you. :) Ham II (talk) 06:32, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Assassin's Creed's[edit]

Oy verilmiyor. Tuşa basılmıyor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Assassin's Creed's (talk • contribs) 15:50, 1 April 2016‎ (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. Eligible voters need 76 edits at the end of the day 2015-12-31 in a single project. You have only 8 edits as of now. Contribute some useful texts or files and next year, you'll be able to vote. Kind reards -- Rillke(q?) 16:01, 1 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Bgpaulus[edit]

This image appears in the "Objects, shells and miscellaneous" category. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to place it with similar images in the "Frescos, ceilings and stained glass" category? Cheers! Bgpaulus (talk) 22:25, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

An Azulejo is a glass-ceramic tile work; reminds me of mosaics. As such it may fit into stained glass. @Miya, Odisha1, Uğurkent, Beria, and Steinsplitter: Do you have an opinion about that?
@Bgpaulus: If you like, please join the committee next year. We expect 1000 excellent images next year and we appreciate new members who help out with categorization. -- Rillke(q?) 22:44, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like mosaic as a wall decoration. I agree to move it to "Frescos, ceilings and stained glass" .--miya (talk) 23:10, 2 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that's too. Thanks, Bgpaulus. Uğurkent (talk) 18:41, 4 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done I re-categorized File:SM Alcáçova June 2015-1.jpg from Objects to "Frescos, ceilings and stained glass".--miya (talk) 05:25, 5 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Hobit[edit]

Can we please get the "you can vote more than once" screen fade thing to only happen once? Every single time I view an image and then hit the back button I get that again (and again and again). The frustration is such that I don't really want to vote. Hobit (talk) 00:19, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. The application does quite a few things (about 10 tasks including gallery shuffle, building its data structures and querying the API whether you are really you) while this "screen fade" is running, but I agree, this isn't what users expect anymore these times. Meanwhile, you could just open the links in a new tab (Ctrl+Click [WIN], Command+Click [OSX], Middle mouse button click). Though, if you are operating on a touch screen or are otherwise impaired, I can understand your frustration. -- Rillke(q?) 01:44, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Hobit: What are you particularly interested in when "viewing an image"? Seeing a magnified version of the file? The file description? Categories? Perhaps I could bring this to the gallery directly... so you do not have to leave it. -- Rillke(q?) 01:46, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just seeing the image at high/full resolution. Any fixes welcome! Hobit (talk) 03:07, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can't promise anything for this year. Making features is easy, testing and fixing fall-outs until everyone can live with the feature is time consuming. However I can imagine how useful such a feature would be and I already have an idea how it could be implemented, regards. -- Rillke(q?) 11:14, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from RIT RAJARSHI[edit]

My antivirus clears junk-files on PC. Along-with clears browser's cache etc. The control panel shows : Data saved in your browser, and warns, " After removing this data POTY-App won't know what you have voted for". So next-time please save the votes on server. You may save the vote in user's account. RIT RAJARSHI (talk) 15:19, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Votes are saved on server. But fetching them and aggregating them for a user account takes a while. So don't worry too much. -- Rillke(q?) 16:38, 3 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Rmhermen[edit]

Round 2 will start 2016-XX-XX - really needs to say something. Rmhermen (talk) 05:47, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We couldn't say anything at that time... Now Round 2 has started at last! --miya (talk) 11:46, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Elitre[edit]

Hi! As only voting for files which were taken by Commons users is my mission :), I wish there was a better way to find out authorship information - I don't think I should load every single picture to find out about it.

  1. I use the navigation popups, which are a bit hard to read when it comes to files (so much markup), and don't show up anyway for videos.
  2. For videos, that information always requires an extra click somewhere.
  3. I didn't get a toolbar in the dialog to add my question and thought it'd sign automatically, so I'm fixing this manually. --Elitre (talk) 06:35, 16 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Elitre. I hope the Wikimedia's media viewer will help you, at least on some of the finalists like here. Regards.--miya (talk) 16:53, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hey miya ;) Yes, I'm using MV. But I don't want to open every single picture to determine who made/uploaded it, that's it. Thanks! --Elitre (talk) 17:02, 17 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
