Thank you for helping :) I first attempted to upload a pdf to get good resolution, but tried a png when that failed. After reading your feedback I uploaded as svg, and that worked :) It would have helped me if the upload wizard clearly indicated what file formats are preferred, then I would have just uploaded an svg immediately. Thanks for the links. The Village Pump and obviously the filter agree with you, but COM:OW says "[OK] Files marked as updateable (e.g. using the {{Current}} template) may be updated if appropriate", which certainly sounds like what I tried to do should be possible. Hi, thanks for replying. As it turns out after about 15 min the images I uploaded became available anyway, despite the filter acting like they had been blocked. I am reporting that in part because perhaps it indicates a problem with the filter actually blocking potentially spam/abusive/incorrect uploads as it is supposed to?

And you can see I was able to add them to the English Wikipedia article for Angelica atropurpurea in a gallery with other images.

I am assuming the main problem, besides this being my first time uploading an image to WikiMedia Commons, is that I included a link to the iNaturalist observation the images came from in the description and caption, and that was viewed as a spam link. Or perhaps, it is genuinely considered a spam link and I did not know. Would it have been better for me to say "iNaturalist observation #163992988"? Those numbers, when added to the end of an iNat/observation url lead to the observation, so it would represent appropriate attribution for the image, but would keep a live url link out of it.

Last night, after adding it to the article and seeing how incongruous the link looked in the caption, I took it out of all 4 of the listed captions on WikiMedia Commons. But I did leave it in the descriptions. I can change those to the iNat # instead if that's better.

To be clear, the images all became available last night before I fixed them by removing the iNaturalist links from the captions. Despite flagging them, the filter eventually seems to have let them through. MariahKRogers (talk) 19:25, 28 December 2023 (UTC)

There is the text under the thumbnails on Wikipedia (which it appears you decided to remove), and then there is the SDC concept of Captions stored in a database here on Commons (which you were unable to add). Ok I see(?) ...or I see enough to get that the filter functioned as expected/intended from your perspective. That it flagged what I did but then I suppose fixed it by itself and let me upload after the cache was purged. Or something like that. That's good. And my images uploaded in the end so from my perspective everything is good too. I suppose going forward I will still avoid putting links and instead make references to where things are from instead, unless otherwise prompted. Because I am still thinking the description text I put in that had links is what was part of I suppose generating the Caption (in your use of the term) that had a link in it. Each jpg image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller images, they are copyright violations taken from the web. Please don't do that. I again advise you to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite and add that template. Please also review the syntax of {{T}}. Nonetheless, I have tagged those three files with {{Allow Overwriting}}. Again, please request that at COM:OWR in the future. The middle file is an adaptation of the works of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, an Englishman who died 2 September 1973. Please stop responding to me with bot-like replies, the content of which is useless, as I do not know which rights I have. It suggests I did something wrong, which is not true. There is no "abuse" here. The reporting tool only has space for one filename. Why should I not file a report every time I think the filter gets is wrong, which is the intent of these reports? For the Gondor map: I did not originally upload the file, and I did not put it into any category. It was imported from TolkienGateway. It is one of countless adaptations, and it should be overwritable by anyone. Although the Tolkien Estate maintains that adaptations are illegal, it is in no way established. I am well aware of the issue as I and a few others had dealing with the Tolkien Estate in 2004 over maps on the web. Cush (talk) 14:55, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

@Cush: You have no advanced rights here and have never had them per Special:UserRights/Cush, whereas you are a member of the extendedconfirmed group on enwiki and the autoreview group on dewiki. You tried to add {{Allow Overwriting}}, which is not allowed for people who aren't members of the Autopatrol group or higher (that is, with autopatrol rights). What made you think that was a good idea, after the first time it failed? Why won't you make a request at COM:OWR or COM:RFR? Special:AbuseFilter/292 went live with the Disallow action 15:42, 31 August 2023 (UTC), and the proposal to "Limit file overwriting to users with autopatrol rights" was accepted with many supports and one weak oppose 15:19, 23 September 2023 (UTC). After an implementation problem in phab:T345896 and testing, Special:AbuseFilter/290 went live with the Disallow action 09:35, 28 October 2023 (UTC). Hi Jeff. I did NOT indicate that the PDF is my own work. It was taken straight from Internet Archive and is a copyright-free document published in the U.S. before 1928.
