  • Edit kind: I was trying to upload a photo of Ralph Warner Hammett, my wife's grandfather. The photo was a family photo taken while he was in Europe during WW2. The photo is a jpg. The original scan of this photo was repaired by me using Adobe Photoshop. This photo has been disseminated on numerous placed on the web but belongs to our family.
  • Comments: There is no reason this photo should not be uploaded as it perfectly characterizes R W Hammett and would be appropriate for his Wikipedia page. JAEReh (talk) 17:13, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
@JAEReh: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, what can you tell us about the name and lifetime of the original photographer and the dates and countries of photography and publication? In addition, please see COM:DW.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:56, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The logo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your website or social media presence or send permission via OTRS because we don't allow Fair Use here. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:52, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

  • Comments: I would like to upload a photograph to that specific name, but it won't let me because its a redirect. The image in question is a flag that was made in 2005, and was uncontested for many years. It's even referenced in the "Straight Ally Flag". I would need to delete the redirect page to upload the image. ThunderBrine (talk) 18:44, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

I have re-granted autopatrol to Wladek92, I think Odder removed it thinking it is bundled in with translation admin as it is with regular admin. All other translation admins have autopatroller/patroller/admin/etc so I don't see any use case for changing the filter. ~riley (talk) 11:37, 6 May 2020 (UTC)

@Sam1370: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please feel free to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits), having that should allow you to upload mp3 files.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:31, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Is there any sort of request system here that allows people to request mp3s to be uploaded and for the requests to be approved by members with the given rights? Sam1370 (talk) 11:53, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Sam1370: No, but you could make your case here or at COM:BATCH with enough information for {{Information}}, and one of the page watchers might help.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:58, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Alright, I'll make my case here; this is an MP3 file of the pronunciation of the German word "Septemberprogramm" that was generated in Google Translate. It is in the public domain; the Google TOS permit using their translate programs for commercial use, and there has not been legislation that states the output of a program can be owned by the copyright-holder of the program. Sam1370 (talk) 19:30, 28 April 2020 (UTC)
@Sam1370: Which exact interface to Google Translate are you using? If it is web-based, what is the URL? Where exactly in the Google TOS is commercial use of their translate programs permitted?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:51, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I actually checked just now, and couldn’t find it anywhere where it explicitly stated that in the TOS. I should have checked originally, sorry: I originally got that claim from a stack exchange article and just didn’t bother to verify it. Anyway, I am using the website https://soundoftext.com/ to download the audio files. See this article: https://ttsreader.com/blog/2017/05/10/copyright/ for a description on the copyright; they asked an attorney and the conclusion she/he reached was that “It is very clear that the Google terms of service for this app gives ownership of resulting sound recording copyrights to the recorded files to the user of the application, as long as the text is your original text created or otherwise legally used by the application user“ which puts the pronunciation file as legally my own work. Sam1370 (talk) 06:29, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

Cross-wiki uploads are still happening per this log, which sometimes errors out. Perhaps the change referred to at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T214230#6027607 had something to do with this. Pinging @Steinsplitter, Josve05a, Guanaco, Achim55 as concerned Admins. Pinging @Mahveotm as change author.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:40, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Change 491928 by Mahveotm wasn't applied though, so I have no idea what caused this abuse filter to suddenly stop working. pandakekok9 02:10, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
We now know why filter 153 stopped thanks to DannyS712. It's caused by phab:T251474, where all registered users now have the upload_by_url right. Filter 153 uses that right to exclude users from being blocked by the filter. But since all users now have upload_by_url, the filter can't get some hits now. This can be easily fixed by removing that part of code. pandakekok9 03:37, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Fixed. --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:50, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, it's working properly now! :) pandakekok9 11:11, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
And a trout to Urbanecm since they are the one who deployed the change which gives all registered users the upload by url right :) pandakekok9 11:15, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@Firdaus singh: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:26, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Report by EelMusic

@EelMusic: Hi. Technically, the problem is that you have been trying to upload the file from the English Wikipedia. Uploading it directly from Commons (e.g. using the Upload Wizard) should solve the problem; but please note that album covers usually need OTRS permission. If you are the copyright holder/creator of the album cover, please send permission for the album cover to the OTRS system after uploading it. If you are not, please ask the copyright holder to do so (if you think it's likely for them to release the cover under a free license) or do not upload the image (because it's likely to be deleted). Of course, there are some exceptions (such as the ones that are too old, or the ones that are too simple), but I think this particular cover doesn't fall within those categories. Thank you. There is nothing inappropriate about the image at all. It is no different than seeing an item on display at a museum. Nothing vulgar, no foul language, nothing hateful, just a picture of an Astra A-100. The filter gave some nonsensical excuse that it thinks it's inappropriate. Doesn't say why it thinks it's inappropriate.

  • Comments: I'm just trying to upload an image of an Astra A-100. It's no more inappropriate than a photo of any other gun, car, tea pot, whatever. Literally just an Astra A-100 in the picture, that's it. Goatroach (talk) 21:23, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

@Celloheidi: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Please feel free to request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits), having that should allow you to upload mp3 files.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:46, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Another Report by Sasan Harun-Mahdavi

@Sasan Harun-Mahdavi: In addition to what I wrote above, 40 years is not nearly enough time. Copyright in photos belongs to the original photographer, not the family which possesses the prints. Traditionally (before digital photography), photographers held on to negatives, do you have those? Also, we need OTRS or explicit web permission for photos initially published elsewhere.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:26, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Actually, 40 years could be enough time. Iranian copyright for photographic works expire 30 years after the date of publication. @Sasan Harun-Mahdavi: Are those photos taken and published in Iran 40 years ago? If yes, then we will need a proof that those photos were published 40 years ago. Is there like a copyright office in Iran? Once you had the proof, you can upload those photos via our Upload Wizard instead of the cross-wiki upload tool. pandakekok9 03:32, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
