Report by MarQ.Berry

@MarQ.Berry: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png photo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png photos are not allowed at all. You said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png photo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but if you were not the original photographer, that person may need to send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Also, it will look fuzzy when scaled down, so you may want to upload a jpg version which will look sharper, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:50, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

@SeanMXD: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg photos as a new user while leaving the summaries intact. Each jpg photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads smaller photos, they are copyright violations taken from the web. If you took the photos yourself, please upload the full-size originals of them, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photos, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept them, and have the photographer(s) license them on their websites or social media or send the photos and permissions via OTRS with carbon copies to you. @Lib140470: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg school crest as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The crest you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller crest, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you or a school official may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your website or social media presence or send permission via OTRS because we don't allow Fair Use here. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. If you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:53, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Suggestion for a filter

As some admins are aware, the Commons has been having issues with an IP that has been trying to disruptively edit on the subject of Tony Ricca. There is an active block at present on the range Special:Contributions/2001:8003:58A3:6C01:0:0:0:0/64 and a previous block for clearly the same person on the range Special:Contributions/2001:8003:5999:6D00:0:0:0:0/64. I am of the belief that this person will persist once the block is concluded (he has behaved similarly on the same subject on WikiData with the same attitude towards blocking - he is presently blocked there also) so some other action is needed. This filter was brought to my attention and I was wondering if it was possible to do a filter with the following specifications;

  • The IP editing uses the IP range 2001:8003:0:0:0:0:0:0/(whatever the right number is here)
  • The term "Tony Ricca" is used.

This should stop any new threads on the admin board (the present tactic since all the images are protected and so are the deletion request pages) on that subject from that range. I hope this is possible as it will stuff this person up totally. TLPG (talk) 10:43, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

@TLPG: do realize they will shift to "T0ny R1cca" right away. If done, I would suggest taking something more specific and block without warning. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 21:53, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
That's fixed with the ccnorm() switch. But as I just mentioned at ANU, filters are not used when blocks are sufficient. --Majora (talk) 21:55, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
As I just said on ANU, the block isn't sufficient. TLPG (talk) 01:16, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Warn empty gallery page creators

Warn users creating creating pages in Gallery space with no images, applies to all users except admins. This would block stop accidental page creations. Example pages

To trigger the filter, source of page must be missing all the words: file image gallery imagemap

If I'm right removing the condition (user_editcount < 3) should be sufficient. MediaWiki:Abusefilter-warning-gallery looks ok. Opinions? --Achim (talk) 13:33, 10 December 2019 (UTC)

The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. See also COM:DW.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:06, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

  • Page name: Jack Goncalo Draft (Jack Goncalo Draft links: histlogsabuse logen:Jack Goncalo Draft)
  • Edit kind: I'm trying to add a picture of Jack Goncalo (me) to the wiki article about my research. The 1st message was asking me to verify that I had taken the picture with my own camera - it was a picture I had taken of me, to which I own the rights, which seems like it would still count. The 2nd message was that the filter felt it was an "unconstructive addition" or something along those times.
  • Comments: I think the issue might have been that I host this picture of me on my website and had downloaded it from there to re-upload here, if the filter was triggered due to the file size or the fact that it already exists on the web then I can try finding the original file to upload instead if needed. Abuse filter for file names/descriptions with the word "poster"

Would having an abuse filter with this function help? Even though there are many patrollers patrolling Special:NewFiles in one way or another, some of these fair use files might accidentally slip through the eyes of the patrollers and possibly stay on commons for a long time. If this is feasible, I would suggest that having the following criteria for tagging might be useful:

  1. source is imdb or own work
  2. date included in the {{Information}} is rather recent, recent enough that these files are not allowed here by default
  3. having the word "poster(s)", or any of its variant in any other language, included in the file name and/or description
Just my 2 cents. Minorax (talk) 14:12, 24 December 2019 (UTC)
