Can't see those either. CodeEditor

It is installed. You might have accidentally turned it off for yourself with the toolbar button (or you might have disabled the whole toolbar in your preferences, in which case CodeEditor doesn’t work either). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 23:44, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

General technical help

Hello! I'm an admin from SqWiki and my community lately is holding a kind of photo-competition in regard to traditional foods. We've nearly finished setting up the project page but we have 2 problems:

1. If you open the home tab, you'll see that its name gets highlighted. The same thing doesn't happen in the other tabs. How do we replicate that effect?
2. We've copied the general layout from Commons:Wiki Loves Food 2021 in India. There there were some translation tags which we removed because they were bringing problems with text formatting but in doing so we've removed the multi-lingual infrastructure. Can you help me insert them back in the right places in the right way?

@NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, I will ask. But in regard to highlighting, I didn't mean that kind of highlighting. I meant the titles as "Faqja kryesore", "Fotografitë", "Juria" etj. When you click on them and you switch through those pages, the title of the page you're currently on gets highlighted in a light gray. I fixed that for you, and here's explanation: The {{#ifeq:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|etc.|eaecf0|ffffff}} line detects if {{FULLPAGENAME}} and the page that specified at etc. above were the same and change color to "Cultured" depends on the boolean output. @NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh, thanks a lot but the button redirects you on the "Wiki Loves Folklore 2021" campaign while I'd want it to redirect to the "Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022" campaign, if a thing like that even exists (I don't know if we'd have to take some extra steps for creating a wizard upload specifically for that or not). @Klein Muçi: Simply change campaign to something else or completely remove it. The form you see is Special:UploadWizard which is available to all registered users. This is my first time I've had to deal with this (UploadWizard + Translation infrastructure) and I was surprised that all this required such heavy admin intervention. Oh, I did not get that there was a line before the list. I think the only practical way is to request the rights for yourself (or someone else of the team). In the course of uploading this file the uploading protocol asked whether I wanted to associate it with "Samuel A. Hall" on Wikidata, which I assumed was a Wikidata entry created when I created the Wikipedia article on the subject. It appears that it is not. Jetphotos files without VRT

Is there a way to query/generate a list of files sourced to Jetphotos.com (or which contain "jetphotos" in the file information) which do not contain VRT permission? Jetphotos.com generally specifies that images there are copyrighted, and although many files from Jetphotos.com on Commons like File:Aloha Air Cargo Boeing 737-319 N303KH.jpg have VRT permission, many others like File:Fokker 100 Bek air.jpg do not. I'd like to review the list and based on a manual assessment, tag many with {{No permission since}} as appropriate. A similar search might be worthwhile for Airliners.net. I added a button here (see bottom of the page).

I don't see the said button here, at the main page (it should appear below the contact info).

@Klein Muçi: There were two problems: first, the upload button was outside of the <onlyinclude> section, which means it wouldn’t have been transcluded even if the page that actually gets transcluded contained the button. And this is the second problem, that it didn’t contain it: behind the scenes, Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/Përshkrimi/sq gets transcluded for technical reasons, not Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/Përshkrimi, and the former page is updated only when the page is marked for translation (similarly to the /en subpage, except that nothing needs to be translated from Albanian to Albanian, of course). —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:53, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

@Tacsipacsi, I was suspecting that the problem was related to the translation subject. I got the translation admin rights myself and things will go smoother after this for me but if my opinion is worth anything, I'd say that the whole translation infrastructure is pretty frustrating from a newcomer point of view. Or a new user. I was surprised a lot learning that you needed special rights for that, to start it up, but apparently you need it all the time, not only for the start. I tried editing Commons:Gara e fotografisë së ushqimit tradicional shqiptar - 2022/Përshkrimi/sq but it says that that page can't be edited manually and that I need to use the translation tool. How do I import "en:User:Alexis Jazz/Bawl"

I am testing a tool called "Bawl" over at the English-language Wikipedia, but I tend to be here more often than there and want to test it out here. It's a tool that's currently being developed by user "Alexis Jazz" which is a more feature filled version of the current MediaWiki Reply tool. As the source code is over on another website I don't know how to load it here without copying an archaic version that won't get updated.

This tool works via a Javascript in your own userpage, so you can just copy that string to Special:MyPage/common.js as explained on Alexis Jazz's page. @GreenC: I think you can just write at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. By the way, you could include testwikidata: and then you’d have two wikis, which can be ranked. Recent changes

• English Wikipedia recently set up a gadget for dark mode. You can enable it there, or request help from an interface administrator to set it up on your wiki (instructions and screenshot).
• Category counts are sometimes wrong. They will now be completely recounted at the beginning of every month. [1]

Problems

• A code-change last week to fix a bug with Live Preview may have caused problems with some local gadgets and user-scripts. Any code with skin-specific behaviour for vector should be updated to also check for vector-2022. A code-snippet, global search, and example are available.

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 February. It will be on all wikis from 10 February (calendar).

Are there problems with the API?

Today I get time out errors while trying to use the API. There is no successful request. I am using the wikimate library for php and I've done that many times before without any problems. "Cross-wiki upload from en.wikipedia.org"

What does this mean as a comment on an upload summary? See Bandi3534 (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log) block user and:

"07:49, 10 February 2022 Bandi3534 talk contribs uploaded File:NBA.png (Cross-wiki upload from en.wikipedia.org) Tag: Cross-wiki upload (thank)"

I had assumed that this was system generated and so was largely a reliable indicator that the file had been moved from another Wikipedia (with some implications as to relevance and licensing there). It was often hard to trace such files on those Wikipedias because of CSD F8 being executed super-rapidly. However I've recently been told that it's just a mis-click on the general upload tool (deliberate or not) and is basically meaningless. I'm also seeing a lot of new uploads with this summary and no indication of having ever been near a Wikipedia. See Commons:Deletion requests/File:ABD petrol.png.

So is this message meaningless? Does it mean anything if it's in conjunction with an old upload summary on the file desc page?

As this message is misleading (at least), can we do anything about avoiding it being added to so many files which haven't (as claimed) come from another Wikipedia? Andy Dingley (talk) 10:53, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

@Andy Dingley: This message appears when a file is uploaded from within the editing interface on a Wikipedia. You click the "image" icon, choose "upload", choose a file, assert that you own the copyright and are willing to release it under CC BY-SA 4.0, and provide some minimal metadata, and the file gets uploaded without your ever seeing Commons. I just tested this by uploading File:Bjh21 upload test.jpg. It's minimally described at Commons:Cross-wiki media upload tool, which is linked from the tag on each upload using it. It looks like the message can be changed through a change to $wgUploadDialog on Commons. I think that's the kind of change that the community can ask the WMF sysadmins to make, but we'd need to demonstrate that there's a consensus on Commons to change it. --bjh21 (talk) 11:42, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

MediaWiki message delivery going rogue

As you can see here, I have only ordered User:MediaWiki message delivery to send some message to 18 users at 14:51, 10 February 2022. But MediaWiki message delivery has gone rogue sending two other message at 17:16 on its own abusing my name! How is this possible? 4nn1l2 (talk) 17:59, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Upstream connect error

I am frequently getting an error message upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. reset reason: overflow. Reloading the page will resolve it after a while, but it will occur even with opening my watchlist or other pages with seemingly low traffic. De728631 (talk) 19:36, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Exact duplicates

E.g. File:Cultivating Egypt’s Desert (39459460084).jpg and File:Cultivating Egypt’s Desert.jpg. Should we really manually mark those with template:dupe? The software seems to find them by itself? I mean the pages themselves state "The following file is a duplicate of this file (more details)" apparently without any human interference. @Palosirkka: Yes, you need to mark one of them by hand. The software can detect that the files are identical, but it can't detect which one should be deleted, or handle merging the description pages itself. There are also a few cases where we do actually want to keep identical files. --bjh21 (talk) 14:43, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Special:ListDuplicatedFiles can even list all duplicates (I mean only the first 5000, but if they were cleaned up, there probably wouldn’t be more than 5000). We could create a template to mark intentionally kept duplicates (if we don’t already have one), and have a bot list all identical duplicates that aren’t marked as intentional. Of course, the bot can’t decide with 100% confidence which file should be deleted, but it can list both (or in some—currently nearly 400—cases all three or more) and let the admin make the decision. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 19:18, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the replies. Ah, so the duplicate template really is a "delete this specific file of the copies" template. So I will keep adding it. @Palosirkka: The upload API does warn on uploading a duplicate, but that can be overridden. I have a feeling that some upload tools may automatically override the warning without asking the user. I can think of two reasons for keeping duplicate files. One is where the files are co-incidental duplicates. Imagine two countries that have identical flags, or scans of blank pages in two different books. In that kind of case, the files might have very different descriptions but the same contents. The other case is where there's a file that's being kept up to date (like a map tagged with {{Current}}) and someone wants to preserve the version as at a particular date. Large number of expensive function calls by {{TemplateBox}}

{{TemplateBox |name=Depicted font |i18n-method=ext.translate}} is making 498 out of 500 allowed "Expensive parser function count". Seems like one for every language supported by mediawiki. That is causing issues at pages like Template:Depicted font/doc or Template:Depicted logo/doc. Can someone look into why are we making so many Expensive parser function calls? How to add language version of graphic?

I have created a Polish language version of this graphic. I would like to add the Polish version in the description of it, following this example, but it is beyond me, because I have to make a template, I guess... You don't need a new template. You just edit the |other versions= parameter of the description and add a <gallery></gallery> with the other file name and a description. Things like

1950s architectural dates in Germany‎ (5 C, -1 F)

are showing in Category:Architectural dates in Germany by decade and mayve also elsewhere. Very unexpected and totally unseen (for me at least). Whatever is causing this here may very well be a deeper issue. -- Tuválkin ✉ ✇ 02:19, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Rollout of the new audio and video player

Please help translate to your language

Hello,

Over the next months we will gradually change the audio and video player of Wikis from Kultura to Video.js and with that, the old player won’t be accessible anymore. The new player has been active as a beta feature since May 2017.

The new player has many advantages, including better design, consistent look with the rest of our interface, better compatibility with browsers, ability to work on mobile which means our multimedia will be properly accessible on iPhone, better accessibility and many more.

The old player has been unmaintained for eight years now and is home-brewn (unlike the new player which is a widely used open source project) and uses deprecated and abandoned frameworks such as jQuery UI. Removing the old player’s code also improves performance of the Wikis for anyone visiting any page (by significantly reducing complexity of the dependency graph of our ResourceLoader modules. See this blog post.). The old player has many open bugs that we will be able to close as resolved after this migration.

The new player will solve a lot of old and outstanding issues but also it will have its own bugs. All important ones have been fixed but there will be some small ones to tackle in the future and after the rollout.

What we are asking now is to turn on the beta feature for the new player and let us know about any issues.

Recent changes

• Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [4]
• At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [5]
• You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup class=notpageimage. For example, [[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]. [6]
• There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.

• Community Wishlist Survey results have been published. The ranking of prioritized proposals is also available.

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 22 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 23 February. It will be on all wikis from 24 February (calendar).

Future changes

• The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [7][8]
• Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [9]
• Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.

Issues with Video2Commons

A few days ago a "traumaheli" (ambulance helicopter) landed somewhere and I filmed it, I wanted to upload this to the Wikimedia Commons as we don't have any free footage of a Dutch ambulance helicopter in action like this here, but every time I try to upload the videos using Videos2Commons there's an error. Recent changes

• When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [10]
• Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [11][12]
• The user group oversight was renamed suppress. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.

Problems

• The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [13]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).

Future changes

• Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
• If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes: successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

@Aram and Krinkle: The translation page template and the other translation pages have the line (which occurs twice):

if (mw.config.get('wgUserLanguage') !== 'en') {

But on the ckb page, both lines have been changed to:

if (mw.config.get('wgUserLanguage') !== 'ckb')

I believe this change of language code, such that the ckb translation is deactivated when the user language is ckb, is the problem.

Comparing the de and ckb pages, there are a few other changes to comments and whitespace. Most are insignificant, but an if statement without braces makes it easy for future changes to accidentally place statements in the wrong place, so the braces should be re-added. I made the ckb page consistent with the other translation pages in this sandbox version. The ckb page can be replaced with it to apply the changes.

Hello @Krd, Sorry for mentioning you here. I just want to find someone for an edit request. Please just go to MediaWiki:Gadget-Cat-a-lot.js/ckb and:

• find //<syntaxhighlight lang="javascript"> (1 match) and replace with //<nowiki>
• find !== 'ckb' (2 matches) and replace with !== 'en'
• And finally add //</nowiki> to the last (and on it's own) line.
