Unsure of what category I should put this image under.

Hi,

I just realized that I can contribute images also to wikipedia. I'm uploading a close up picture of Sri Ravishankar the spiritual guy from India which i had taken a while ago in a public satsang event in Mumbai. I was happy that though shaken a bit, i could use my new telescopic lens decently at the time.

To cut the long story short, I am not sure of which category I can put this one in.

Also, I have taken lot of pictures of nature, skies, animals, etc. How can I contribute more to wikipedia with these?

Thank you, Senthil Photo sent (talk) 04:20, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Uploading Logo For a Company

What and how to upload A company logo for a particular company considerin it is copywritten by the company and what license should i be using while uploading the file. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gocrazy69 (talk • contribs) 07:52, 28 March 2013‎ (UTC)

If the logo reaches the threshold of originality required for copyright protection, you will need the copyright holder's permission to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use the logo for any purpose with respect to copyright (trademark rights may still be reserved). You cannot choose a license on their behalf; only the copyright holder can issue a valid license, so the permission must be issued by someone authorised to speak on behalf of the company on copyright matters. If they are willing to issue such a permission, it should follow our standard format and be sent in to our permissions archive. LX (talk, contribs) 09:01, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

Uploading a new version, replacing the old version.

Potentially, this is simple but I can't see how to do it! I agree that there may be trouble whereby others have found use for the old version that might not be served well by the new version. But in this case, the file is Electricity.NZ.TiwaiPoint.png and I have a new version with a further year's worth of data included. The original file was moved to the "commons" by someone, no matter. But, I can't see how to replace it. The guided process produces "File name already exists" and there is no option apparent to specify that yes, I want the old file replaced. Possibly after some other person has verified the intended change as acceptable. I don't want to leave a trail of obsolete files either. NickyMcLean (talk) 03:51, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

  1. Please stick to COM:OVERWRITE
  2. Go to the file page (File:Electricity.NZ.TiwaiPoint.png), scroll to the File history table, click Upload a new version of this file and follow the instructions in the upload form. -- Rillke(q?) 20:48, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

upload not working properly? help?

Hi. I am trying to upload a new version of a map - just to make a few corrections. It is not working though and I am confused why not? Can someone help? (Lilic (talk) 16:54, 6 April 2013 (UTC)).

It appears that it did upload - looking at the "old/previous" version shows it being okay - but it does not display properly? Perhaps some time is required for changes to appear? (Lilic (talk) 17:02, 6 April 2013 (UTC)).

For ultra-large files, there is Commons:Chunked uploads. There are ways of trading off video quality against file size, but the details would depend on your software setup. AnonMoos (talk) 18:30, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

PDF file scales badly

The PDF file File:Uninsured Children by Poverty Status, Household Income, Age, Race and Hispanic Origin and Nativity 2009p28.pdf looks fine in its full size version, but the scaled versions have huge amounts of white space added. I presume that occurred during the upload process. How can this be fixed? RockMagnetist (talk) 17:09, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

PDF files are really more for multi-page documents than for basic charts and graphs. They're rendered as JPEGs (which can sometimes be a problem for non-photographic images right off), and margins are determined by the overall document page size. In this case "Full resolution" means that the PDF file is displayed in a PDF-viewing program on each person's computer (which program is used can vary between computers). It doesn't look greatly different in the PDF-viewing program on my computer than it's displayed on the image description page. The best thing to do would be to convert to vector SVG format, if feasible... AnonMoos (talk) 19:26, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
I kind of dissected the PDF file, and there's a lot of hidden text present in the file (the complete page 28 from some document, in fact); it's kind of a mess, and I'm not sure I can help with directly converting it to another format; it might be simplest just to take a high-resolution PNG screenshot... AnonMoos (talk) 19:35, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
I reformatted the file for some improvement; that's about as far as I can go with it... AnonMoos (talk) 23:17, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

As you can see, it's because it was a copyright violation. You were also notified of this on your user talk page. Custom license box chokes on tag redirects?

So apparently, when you put a custom license template into the Upload Wizard, it seems to choke on names that are redirects, claiming that they are not "valid wikitext, or does not contain a license." (specifically, I used {{Pd-textlogo}}, a redirect to {{PD-textlogo}}).

I want to upload a screenshot from en.wikipedia of an image that is displaying incorrectly (on a black background, which makes it virtually invisible), in the hope that someone can fix the problem. The image is this one, which is non-free, minimal use etc., so I don't believe I can upload the screenshot to wikipedia. Can I upload it here? That is, is a screenshot of a copyright-free site free of copyright regardless of the content? Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 21:50, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

You certainly can't upload a file containing a non-de minimis copyrighted image to Commons. I don't think a screenshot is needed in this case anyway -- it's enough to point out to a person with technical JPEG knowledge that the JPEG file has problems. AnonMoos (talk) 05:12, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Replacing uploaded file

Have uploaded a pdf figure that came out too small. How do I replace it with a new enlarged version? -- 07:22, 16 April 2013‎ RogerLie

PDF files are really for whole pages, usually of multipage documents, and they're rendered on Wikimedia as JPEGs (which may not be too great for geometric illustrations), as discussed in the "PDF file scales badly" subsection above on this page. It would be much better if you could use the software program which you used to output the PDF file to output a vector SVG file instead. Or if that's not feasible, a large PNG... Hi again Alf5435334777! McZusatz has already answered your question, but a few additional remarks may be in order:
  • Please don't post the same message in multiple places. You posted this question both at my talk page and on Commons talk:Upload help. That leads to duplication of work and forking of discussions.
  • I'm quite busy at the moment and may not respond quickly, so you're better off directing general questions like this to the community at large rather than to me personally.
  • This is the page for asking help with uploading. Commons talk:Upload help is for discussions about this page.
  • You don't need to write your user name at the beginning of your entries, since it's part of your signature that you add with four ~ characters at the end (as you've done).

Bild Bekannt2.jpg

"Special:UploadWizard" seems stuck

I haven't uploaded any files for a while, so when I clicked on "Upload file" and ended up at "Special:UploadWizard" — okay, things change. But all I get is the "Please visit Commons:Upload help if you need to ask questions about uploading files", and a spinner. I wait, nothing else happens, I try it twice more, but it seems nothing is coming back. Is there some problem at the head end?

I think I can find the old way in, but if I didn't know about that I would be totally balked. There used to be an option to upload files without this "Wizard", and I think it should be put back in. ~ J. Johnson (talk) 19:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

When you try to load the UploadWizard and bypass the cache, is anything shown under "Tools > Web Developer > Error Console" (or even better in "Firebug", if you are familiar with that)? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 21:25, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Hi AKlapper- Forgive me if I go into too much detail, but I want to try and convey the most accurate description possible:
  • When I go to the Upload Wizard (in Firefox) the initial prompt is intact: “Select media files to share.” When I press the button, everything functions normally, I can select an image from my computer. The image file shows up in the Upload Wizard, but nothing happens. There is no upload occurring. The thumbnail is blank (image of a blank piece of paper with folded corner), the name of the file, and the ability to click on the word “Remove” under the file name. The “Add more files” button is below and using it only adds another file, but nothing happens, there is no upload. There is no processing timer circle to the right of the file name…
  • However, when I add a second and third file, and then press the remove button for the third, the following message appears “Some uploads failed.” Next to the message are two buttons 1) “Retry failed uploads” and 2) “Continue anyway.”
  • When I press “Retry failed uploads” the first two files now have the processing timer circle to the right (but the time to completion bar on the bottom of the page is nowhere to be seen). But, they never seem to complete the upload (I chose smaller files and they are taking abnormally long).
  • When I press “Remove” for the second file, NOW the timer bar on the bottom of the screen appears and just above it the “Some uploads failed” message. The timer at the bottom indicates 5 minutes left for a 750K file (I’ve uploaded 20M files in half the time).
  • Instead of pressing “Retry” I pressed “Continue anyway.” The next screen appears regarding licensing. I click “file is my own work” and then the “Next” button… The button slightly changes color indicating it registered, but nothing happens. The page does not appear to be processing anything.
Does this paint a clear picture of the problem? --Godot13 (talk) 06:29, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
Also, I have cleared my browser cashe by every method listed in the links above...--Godot13 (talk) 06:31, 19 April 2013 (UTC)
This problem is now covered in https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47384 - for User:Godot13/Sandbox/Upload_Wizard_problem it would be helpful to use a <pre> format to make it more readable. :) This also happens in Firefox when running in Safe Mode with all extensions and add-ons disabled? -- 08:58, 22 April 2013‎ AKlapper (WMF)
Sorry I didn't make it back sooner. It looks to be working now, which is to say the graphic is downloaded and displayed as well as the HTML stuff. I am using Iceweasel 3.0.6 (Firefox), which bills itself as Mozilla 5.0. The only plugin is Shockwave Flash 9.0. At the time the browser showed it was waiting for a download. ~ J. Uploading source material (e.g. spreadsheets)

I wish to upload a chart of historical data that will need to be recreated annually. Is it acceptable to upload source data in the form of an ODF spreadsheet, so that others can recreate the chart? If not, where should such data be stored? --Pmj (talk) 07:07, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

ODF isn't on the list of approved file formats. This site is basically for visual, audio, or audiovisual media fixed in a concrete form, while a raw spreadsheet file is abstract data which could be presented in a variety of ways. If you're uploading a visual chart file, then you could paste in a CSV version of the underlying spreadsheet used to generate the chart as part of the image description page (similar to File:Estimations of Human Brain Emulation Required Performance.svg etc.). -- AnonMoos (talk) 09:57, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
That's a good idea; I've added the raw CSV data. Thanks! --pmj (talk) 12:22, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, first off: english is not my native language (I am slovak) so I hope I write it right and that you will understand what I am saying, now: I did upload some files which are scans from czech magazine Rock&Pop from years 1994-1995 not existing anywhere on internet, as I know these are the only existing exemplars around - those that I have scanned many years ago (not whole magazine, just the specific reviews or interviews about band called Queryen - cut out and scanned). I read I can upload such files to wikimedia commons (license ATRIBUTION) if I specificaly - in their description - say I am not owner, credit original owner (Rocok&Pop) and authors (which I did exactly like that), but they were deleted by some of your administrators anyway - why? Please, can anyone help me with this? Maybe I put wrong license or wrong syntax, but hey, I am not lawyer nor programmer, I just did it with the best intention not harm anyone, so I need your help to put right the license in above sense (for example Rock&Pop - http://www.rockandpop.cz - owns history only after year 2005, I also write email to them...) Bublible (talk) 12:04, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

I read I can upload such files to wikimedia commons: You cant upload such files unless the copyright holder agreed to that license.
The site http://www.rockandpop.cz/ dissallows you to take something from their site. To upload something here you need the copyright holders written permission for publication under a free license allowing anyone to reuse the file anytime, anywhere for every purpose including commercial purposes. See Commons:PS#Must_be_freely_licensed_or_public_domain, Commons:Licensing, for permission see Commons:Email templates. --Martin H. (talk) 12:23, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

OK, but I didnt take it from their site, they do not have this themselves as I know, cos they have their archive only from year 2005 onward (as I said, today I wrote to them my 3rd email, still waiting for answer, I also comunicated with them on their FB page) Bublible (talk) 12:37, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Where exactly did you get the idea that you could upload copyrighted content under any sort of license without permission from the copyright holder? Only the legitimate copyright holder can issue a valid copyright license. Please go back and read Commons:Project scope/Summary, part of our first steps guide, to understand what type of content you can and cannot upload to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 13:24, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

I just change the license of those files to {{OTRS pending}} except one file (http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Queryen_-_DEMO_%281994%29.jpg) which is already deleted so I have no option to change its license myself, and now communicating with owner (Rock&Pop magazine executives - they already approved it in email to me, now they need to send approval email to you) to send the approval email, but I do not understand 2 things: what "subject" such email should have, and secondly: what exactly in "approval email from the owner" should this line - STANDARD CHOICE; SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TYPE OF LICENSE: [publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0" (unported) and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).] - be changed to, please? Should it be replaced by line "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license"?

@LX: here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_licenses#Original_licenses (Attribution): "Licensees may copy, distribute, display and perform the work and make derivative works based on it only if they give the author or licensor the credits in the manner specified by these.", but maybe I understood it in a wrong way (see, english is not my native language, so I need help with this probably) --Bublible (talk) 13:39, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

...or would it be enough to resend you email to "permissions-commons email address" they send to me with their approval (in czech language)? --Bublible (talk) 14:01, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Please, can anyone tell me what "subject" of "approval email form the owner of the file" sent to you to "permissions-commons email address" should have? I just waiting for this answer and I send it to the owner immediately (he is still waiting for my email) as I said above, can anyone answer, please? --Bublible (talk) 14:21, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

The text you quote from English Wikipedia's article on the Creative Commons licenses simply means that files published by the copyright holder under a Creative Commons license with the Attribution requirement require attribution when used by others. It does not mean that you can scan photos from magazines and upload them under a Creative Commons license without the copyright holder's consent. You now say that you've obtained such consent, but given your other questions, I'm not sure that you've understood enough to obtain a meaningful letter of consent.
{{OTRS pending}} is not a license. It is meant to be used together with a license to indicate that evidence supporting the licensing claims has been sent in via e-mail. The subject line of e-mails sent to our permissions archive is not particularly important. If the copyright holder agrees to publish the works in question under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license, then the line:

I agree to STANDARD CHOICE; SEE BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION ON TYPE OF LICENSE: [publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0" (unported) and GNU Free Documentation License (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts).]

in our standard permission e-mail template should be filled in as:

I agree to publish that work under the free license "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0" (unported).

LX (talk, contribs) 14:33, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

@LX: thank you, I guess now I understand it right: everytime I upload any stuff is not my own work I will sign it with "OTRS pending" in license field, then contact original owner/autor of the file, send them modified email template and ask them to send it back to you (at given email above)...this is exactly what I am doing now (hope it is right now?) + OK,so subject of the email can be anything, thank you, gonna send them the mail now.

But what about cases where my scanned files of some local periodics that does not exit anymore are realy the only known exemplars around and of course I do not claim I am owner and credit original owner and author in files properties? --Bublible (talk) 14:57, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

Actualy, you should contact the copyright holder and make sure that they are willing to release their work under a license that allows anyone to use the content for any purpose before you upload it here. If you unable to identify or contact the copyright holder of a work, you cannot upload it here. LX (talk, contribs) 18:29, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, why are these 5 scans still being waiting for "approval" when email from owner was sent tommorow? These files: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Queryen_-_DEMO_%281994%29.jpg, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:QUERYEN_%28interview_s_kapelou%29.jpg, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Queryen_-_DEMO_1995.JPG, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Compilation_Of_New_Slovak_Rock_Groups_%28part_II%29.jpg, http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KAROL_MIKLOS,_QUERYEN,_BLANCHE,_THIS_IS_KEVIN_-_4_Ep%27s.jpg --Bublible (talk) 08:26, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Please: no answer from anyone for 2 days about this problem? --Bublible (talk) 11:15, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Bublible, even if they are the only know exemplars around, you do not have the rights to "republish" them on the internet. This has been answered before. For the five scans without approval I don't know what "when email from owner was sent tommorow" exactly means, so that question is hard to answer. In general the owner of a work first has to explicitly give her/his okay first before you can upload and use a picture on Wikimedia. Note that this is my personal opinion on this topic, and I am not a lawyer. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 15:27, 23 April 2013 (UTC)
Permission e-mails are handled by a team of volunteers with limited time. The current backlog for processing e-mails, as noted on Commons:OTRS, is 100 days. LX (talk, contribs) 18:29, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

@AKlapper: yes, it was made exactly as it should be... @LX: OK, so I will wait for 100 days, no problem about that, but can I use those files now although they are not processed by team of volunteers, will they appear in my wikipedia page anyway? --Bublible (talk) 19:40, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Can anyone explain to me what kind of license should I use when I set permission for one re-uploading file as {{OTRS pending}}? I cannot see any license of "OTSR" in the field "License" (sorry I am not native english person so I do not understand if OTRS means something that is actualy is in License field)? + I specified everything that was needed but the script still tells me some fieleds are empty/not specified? --Bublible (talk) 11:12, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

OK, I guess I made it and the files passed thru successfuly this time, thanx for all your help --Bublible (talk) 13:58, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

The files cant pass thru if you not have permission from the copyright holder! The true copyright holder, thats the person who created the content. Not some owner of a copy. --Martin H. (talk) 17:59, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

@Martin: what are you talking about? My files did pass...licenses accepted (maybe except one, but all others are OK now) --Bublible (talk) 00:09, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

So far nothing passed. For most uploads you not provided a license, the license you have to provide is that license that the copyright holder - the tv station or the magazine, not the band and not you! - agreed to in written form. Your files will not pass if you not provide written permission from the legal owners. --Martin H. (talk) 13:30, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

@Martin: sorry but you are COMPLETLY WRONG, all files I used in my wikipage are licensed, absolutely no problem so you really do not talk about the same thing as I am...you are also wrong about the licenses of files belonging to the band: all audios, all profile photos, all concert photos - EVERYTHING THERE is made by band itself + email with written permission(s) was sent to wikimedia and all were accepted... http://sk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queryen please: stop it (I really do not see what are you after here?) The only file in question is still foto (frame) of live programm made by the band (it is not picture made by tv station, nor video of that program) but anyway this single file is not used anymore, so I see no problem and that file can be deleted if you will --46.227.179.62 23:02, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

File:Queryen - súčasná populárna skupina z Trnavy (Pre tých, čo o nich ešte nepočuli).jpg is a copyrighted newspaper article, 1) there is no license on the file description page 2) the article is not made by the band itself 3) any license and permission must come from the original copyright holder, not the band. The file is unlicensed. What I want here: With File:Queryen - 1998 - Telerano, Markiza.jpg you uploaded a TV screenshot, claim the copyright to someone else and you allow anyone, worldwide to reuse the TV stations content for money making purposes as long as "Queryen" is credited. Thats not how it works. The copyright holder must agree to this. --Martin H. (talk) 08:16, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

Upload of files which have been deleted before

Two files (photographs of paintings by the painter Rudolf Heinisch, cf. Wikipedia/German) which I had uploaded on Wikimedia Commons before were deleted. Now I cannot upload them again. The copyright of the files is with the son of the painter and he has given permission to Wikimedia Commons to post the photographs of his fathers paintings.

How can I upload these two photographs again ?

With kind regards

--Hermann-at-wiki (talk) 14:29, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

It probably needs Commons:OTRS. It may be easiest if the heir creates an account and uploads them because there is a bit of a backlog. You or he could email OTRS with the form filled out (relayed from rights holder) and either attach a file or link to the file. You could also link to the deleted files and OTRS can undelete after the license clears.--Canoe1967 (talk) 22:57, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
--Martin H. (talk) 08:26, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

error when I load images

when I try to upload the image (taken from the green day's video jesus of suburbia) I can not load them, and the program says: internal error, wrong token. I do not know why. how can I solve this problem? thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mirò zanki (talk • contribs) 15:46, 26 April 2013‎ (UTC)

Those images don't sound like they're available under a free license, so you shouldn't upload them even if you could... -- AnonMoos (talk) 19:11, 26 April 2013 (UTC)

undesirable characters

Hi, what are "undesirable characters" when describing file prior to upload and how can I avoid them? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cormag100 (talk • contribs) 16:29, 26 April 2013‎ (UTC)

If you mean in filenames, probably everything which is not in the Unicode "Basic Multilingual Plane", and a few others which have special purposes. In the basic upload form, you can edit the upload filename before starting the upload, so it doesn't have to be identical to the filename on your computer's drive. Uploading a resized version of an existing file

Hi, I have uploaded File:BSicon uexAKRZ-UKo.svg, but have made an error with dimensions. When I have tried to re-upload a correct and resized version, Wikipedia Commons will not allow it. I would really appreciate any assistance with this. Many thanks. Nostalgic34 (talk) 14:40, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

One of several annoying features of Inkscape is that it often defaults to A4 paper size. Not sure exactly what size you wanted, but I made it fit inside a square... AnonMoos (talk) 02:08, 28 April 2013 (UTC)

HTML File

I want to create a file using Adobe Edge Animate. It saves its files by .HTML. Is there any way I can upload a .HTML file on Wiki Commons? If not, is there a way I can convert it without losing any animation?--Dom497 (talk) 19:08, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

The only animation methods that Wikimedia Commons supports are GIF animation and (to a much lesser degree) SVG and APNG animation. Otherwise you have to go with full OGV video. "Adobe Edge Animate" seems to generate HTML5 as an alternative to Shockwave Flash, and so doesn't fall within any of the supported formats. AnonMoos (talk) 01:53, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Is there a way I can add HTML code to my user page (I want to make an interactive user page)?--Dom497 (talk) 13:35, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
Not really. You can sign up for "gadgets" in your preferences, and add javascript and styling information to the way you view pages by creating User:Dom497/common.css etc. However, intentionally and by design, the ability of one ordinary Wikimedia user to make another ordinary Wikimedia user run user-authored scripting code is basically nil... Upload a new version of this file

hi, I recently updated two of my files: and yet the image on wikipedia still shows the old version unless you click on the image, what am I doing wrong? Yours ever, Czar Brodie (talk) 06:11, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

It's likely a caching issue. I've purged the files, so if the issue is still affecting you try pressing ctrl+f5 as it's likely your browser using cached thumbnails. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:43, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
f5 does not seem to work, but I think you are correct, it must be a cache issue as pages I did not visit before that use the image show the new version. Thanks. Yours ever, Czar Brodie (talk) 14:13, 30 April 2013 (UTC)
