how to upload my photos to the Prospect Park Wiki (for contest)

I'm a total newbie and not sure if I have done this correctly. I made an account, uploaded my photos to my account (including all the titles, descriptions, etc), and now when I try to add the photos to the Prospect Park Wiki, it tells me that each photo is a duplicate. Can't I just drag my photos in, that I took such trouble to upload, to the Prospect Park Wiki? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Murphy5554 (talk • contribs) 03:33, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

What is the URL of Prospect Park Wiki? I assume Prospect Park Wiki is a Wiki running the MediaWiki software with the InstantCommons extension? In that case you do not need to upload the Fotos there again, you can simply use them via InstantCommons. --C.Suthorn (talk) 05:58, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
@Murphy5554: - add Category:Prospect Park in the categories (either when uploading the photos, or later), or the relevant subcategory (such as Category:Birds of Prospect Park). Hope this helps! - MPF (talk) 17:45, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Territory Of Gaalje'el.jpg

Hi i tried my best to mention the author of the of the picture map, and also mention where and website did the file come from, as im new to wikipedia still i need help. Whats wrong with file, please help me so i can add, i don't want to be deleted --Gumarey (talk) 13:36, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Gumarey, welcome to the Commons. The file you uploaded is missing a license. Because Wikimedia commons doesn't accept files with missing license, you need to add one. I had a look at the file's source which states that the file is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 3.0. Unfortunately, commons don't allow non-derivative licenses and, sadly, the file isn't suitable for commons. Hulged (talk) 14:13, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

"File usage on other wikis" is very out of date; why?

File:East African Airways Vickers VC-10 Groves-1.jpg is listed as being in use in one article, ja:イースト・アフリカン航空720便オーバーラン事故, and 3 drafts: en:User:Yngvadottir/East African Airways Flight 720 (mine), de:Benutzer:Dr. Fist/East-African-Airways-Flug 720, and ru:Участник:Alex Alex Lep/Катастрофа Vickers VC10 в Аддис-Абебе. But the Russian draft was moved to mainspace in 2019 and the draft deleted, and the German draft was moved to mainspace in 2020 and the draft deleted. See the listing of articles at Wikidata Q65176926. Why is the file page here so out of date? It caused me to miss that there were articles I could have used to find sources, and someone else might have translated instead. And presumably these listings of uses are provided for outside users, not just editors; an outsider (or a new editor) might not be able to follow the trail as I did after winding up on a "This page has been deleted" page in a random language. And if it's that out of date, I wonder whether uses of the file could be missed, although the fact my draft appears makes me inclined to suspect the system manages that form of updating adequately. What's going wrong here, and is there a fix? Yngvadottir (talk) 21:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Apparently this phenomenon is nothing new and was reported at Phabricator some two years ago. Somehow though, nothing seems to have been done about it. I posted there now so hopefully the thread was revived and will gain more attention. De728631 (talk) 21:51, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

Infotafeln abfotografieren

Checking file usage in old page revisions?

Commons only shows which pages currently embed an image. Is there a way to check its usage in older revisions of pages?

I can think of at least two situations where this might be useful:

  1. Checking whether an orphaned image has been used in the past can be helpful in determining its educational value
  2. Deleted images are removed from pages by bots. If an image is restored for legitimate reasons, then this information would be useful when adding those images back (as the bots don't always automatically do this)

Ixfd64 (talk) 21:39, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

@Ixfd64: For situation 2, you may visit the Commons Delinker (Commons Delinquent v2) logs at https://commons-delinquent.toolforge.org/ via toolforge:commons-delinquent, or directly using the "delinker log" link on any file description page's deletion log entry.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:37, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

Deletion

How many days does it take to delete the picture from wikicommons — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raqesh Thimmaiah (talk • contribs) 01:30, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello Raqesh Thimmaiah, it depends on the type of deletion you're requesting. See Commons:Deletion policy#Overview of proceduresHulged (talk) 01:42, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
E.g. "This has been here for years, but I think it's out of scope" is going to take a lot longer than "I uploaded this an hour ago by mistake." And "this is a copyright violation and here is the proof" is going to be as close to instant as we can manage. - Jmabel ! talk 02:47, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
@Raqesh Thimmaiah: I deleted the image you uploaded by mistake for courtesy, see Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kodava bride and groom.jpg. Ellywa (talk) 23:44, 9 November 2021 (UTC)
The image was uploaded some time ago as part of a contest; it seems hard to argue it was a mistake. But I have no real objection to this deletion. Brianjd (talk) 01:00, 10 November 2021 (UTC)
I sometimes like to challenge requests like this. But this one looks like it might have been taken in a private place. I think on that basis, we can leave this alone. Brianjd (talk) 01:03, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

Voting Page for the October 2021 Photo Challenge

Can someone please create the voting page for the October 2021 photo challenge? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Photo_challenge/2021_-_October_-_Autumn_leafs

I would be glad to do this myself, but I need clear and specific instructions on how to get the voting process started. Others have asked how to vote but the answers were not helpful. One answer said who was eligible to vote but not how. Another answer said to add the vote to the file, but the question stated that there was a blank page and no files.

Video

Why can’t I upload my video because it has MOV at the end? Please I need to upload it. It’s for a school assignment and I don’t have enough space — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shanara Broadie (talk • contribs) 17:29, 3 November 2021 (UTC)

Commons has a specific purpose and scope, it is not simply a free media hosting service, so "I need it for school" is not particularly compelling. That being said, information about what video file types may be uploaded to Commons is available here. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:07, 3 November 2021 (UTC)
And right now video2commons is pretty broken: it won't do conversions from MOV, at least not as far as I can tell.
@Shanara Broadie: for your school assignment, assuming the video is pretty short, you might want to just upload to Vimeo. They take MOV, and allow a few short videos without you having to take a paid account. - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

Video2comons is supposed to convert videos to webm. To do that v2c uses ffmpeg. I do not believe that there is an active version of ffmpeg available that cannot transcode mov (the video format of iPhones) to webm. With my own uploads I experience at the time, that uploads of 600MB do work, but 700MB and more will not. (that would be 700MB of the transcoded webm, not the mov input file). However you can use the Rillke script to upload a single file of up to 4GiB (provided, you have already transcoded mov to webm locaally). --C.Suthorn (talk) 05:08, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

  1. @C.Suthorn: Can you please clarify "the Rillke script" (URL, or whatever)?
  2. I'm not particularly interested in transcoding locally. It seems to me that we should have at least one working tool that lets people upload from an MOV file. See #video2commons: weird error. This used to work. - Jmabel ! talk 20:15, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel: User:Rillke/bigChunkedUpload.js The "(chunked upload)"-link on every file description page also triggers the Rillke script. C.Suthorn (talk) 20:22, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

Submitting a photo when I have permission from the photographer and the subject!

I want to submit an image to WikiCommons that has not been submitted before. I've got permission from both the photographer (copyright holder) and the subject in the photo. It is a headshot to go with an article I'm drafting. I'm really not clear about how to prove that I have the right to submit, since I didn't create the image myself.

Thanks for any advice about how to tag this image when I submit it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bethbcpr (talk • contribs) 22:27, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

@Bethbcpr: Hi, and welcome. You and the photographer should see VRT, and you should see COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:05, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
  • If someone else is the photographer & copyright holder, they need to give explicit permission to share under a free license (details: Commons:Licensing); a clear way to do that is send an email per Commons:Volunteer Response Team. Thanks for putting in the work to get things right! Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 23:08, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
  • Or: the photographer can post on a site or page that is clearly under their control and indicate an appropriate free license (e.g. CC-BY-SA-4.0).
  • Or: the photographer can set up an account here and upload. (if that, I strongly recommend they attach an email address to the account in case any questions arise)
  • Either of those may be simpler than the VRT process. - Jmabel ! talk 05:38, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Please note that buying a photograph usually does not transfer the copyright from the original photographer or the institution that holds the copyright. Buying a copy of a photograph means that you may use it for your own personal matters, but normally you are not allowed to grant a free licence for anyone else to use the image. This needs a special permission in writing from the copyright holder which needs to be sent by email (see COM:VRT). De728631 (talk) 10:38, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

What to do when image location does not match image description?

@Krok6kola: I would generally trust the description over the coordinates for Own Work, especially when they didn't come from the picture metadata. In this case the upload appears to have left off a negative sign on the Latitude, so I fixed it. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:17, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello, so I'm interested in uploading logo of company in the article about that company. My question is am I allowed to do that when their logo is publicly available and logo does not include mark like it is Registered or Trade mark. Opatijac97 (talk) 17:11, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

  • Hi. For here on Commons, the logo would need to be public domain or free licensed by the copyright holders of the logo (generally the company in question). Some logos that are just a word of text and/or geometric symbols may be uncopyrightable for reason of being below threshold of originality (details: COM:TOO), but that varies from country to country. Unless the company has been out of business for a long time (varies, say 100 years), the logo would generally be trademarked, and more often than not copyrighted. If you're unsure, best not to upload here to Wikimedia Commons. (English language Wikipedia does "copyrighted fair use", limited educational reuse of copyrighted material, for example a copyrighted logo to illustrate an article about the company - better to upload it there.) Well, I guess that is due to the funny world of the internet where anyone can upload works by a Tanzanian roadside artist that may not be widely known for not having an email address. De728631 (talk) 20:28, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
Btw, I just see File:Rubuni-TT4799.jpg, also by Rubuni. AT that time the reference was an email. When I gave the form to Rubuni to fill, he said that he does not have an email "any more". So did he write an email back in 2011 or was it the uploader? I will ask Rubuni these days, promised to show him the article page. Kipala (talk) 07:18, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

@Valarogh: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it as-is, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Sign your posts with four tildes. Use file translated with SVG Translation Tool

I need a little help to figure out how to use the nb-translation of the file Root (cross section).svg. When I link to it from no:Rot it shows in the english version, but I would like it to show in the norwegian version. Abuluntu (talk) 20:16, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

@Abuluntu: since the wiki’s language code is no, while the translation’s is nb, it doesn’t switch automatically; you need to append |lang=nb to the file link, after the caption.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:33, 7 November 2021 (UTC)

Gadget: Image-Anotator

Hello,

i have a question regarding the gadgets and the gadget image annotator. In my preferences, the Gadget tab is not shown to me. I am using a MediaWiki version 1.8 and would like to annotate images. I have installed all the gadgets and extensions but first of all my wiki doesn't show me anything of the same and I don't get any buttons to add an annotation. Can someone help me and show me how to use the gadget?

Crediting my photo uploads

Hello, I am trying to create a gallery of my images that I have uploaded. Under preferences and licensing, I changed author's name to my name 'Skiba, Justin M.'.

I thought this would automatically credit all of my photo uploads to Skiba, Justin M., but it continues to credit it under my username, Skibjm08.

1. How can I get my uploads to be credited under my name, Skiba, Justin M. without having to do it with each individual upload? 2. I would like my photos to link to my Wikipedia page under a gallery.

Thank you for any assistance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skibjm08 (talk • contribs) 19:50, 8 November 2021 (UTC)

@Skibjm08: Hi, and welcome. I see that you have your gallery, your list of uploads, your upload log, and no pages of your own on Wikipedia. So where do you want to link to? I suggest you use VFC to make the changes, once you have somewhere to link to and establish exactly how you want your attribution to look. See also COM:SIGN.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:09, 8 November 2021 (UTC)
  • @Skibjm08: on each file page for a photo you uploaded, you will need to change "{{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}}" to "{{self|cc-by-sa-4.0|author=Skiba, Justin M.}}" or, if you prefer, "{{self|cc-by-sa-4.0|author=[[User:Skibjm08|Skiba, Justin M.]]}}", which will link to your account. This will tell people who reuse photos to attribute to you. However, your account name remains the same, and anything simply recording your actions as a user is going to remain with the same account name. - Jmabel ! talk 01:17, 9 November 2021 (UTC)

Question about Copyright

Dear Wikimedia Commons Admin,

Good morning/afternoon/night Admin,
I have confusion in terms of copyright licensing.
I want to upload a picture named "Lord Adi" .
"Lord Adi" is a screenshot from this video, the video license is Creative Commons Attribution
But turns out, that "Lord Adi" have a huge similarity with this picture, and the picture's license is unknown.
Acknowledging its huge similarity, is it still allowed to upload "Lord Adi"?

Thank you for your attention, have a great day
FreddyKS76 (talk) 15:58, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

  • Good question! The YouTube video is under a free license, but it is unclear if they had permission to release the still photo they reuse in the video under that license - presuming the person who took the still photograph is not the author of the YouTube video. It might be a case of derivative work within the video. Unless you can find some indication that the original still photo can be reused under a free license, I would guess not. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 18:22, 6 November 2021 (UTC)

  2. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php%3Ftitle%3DCommons:WLMUS2021%26redirect%3Dno&action=edit&redlink=1

Droit d'auteur oeuvre de Botticelli / (en) Copyright Botticelli's work

English below

Hello, I have recovered a photograph of the work "La Vierge et saint Jean-Baptiste adorant l'Enfant" by Botticelli. No photographic reproduction of the work seems to be available on the internet except one with watermark (https://www.alamyimages.fr/photo-image-vierge-adorant-l-enfant-avec-le-jeune-saint-jean-baptiste-fin-du-15e-siecle-artiste-sandro-botticelli-135268777.html). Moreover, the person who gave me the image informed me that it was forbidden to photograph it at the time he took the picture. I don't know much about copyright, but it seems to me that Botticelli's works are in the public domain. So I'm wondering if I had the right to post this image on wikimedia or if these rights are still held, in one way or another, by someone? Thank you in advance for your answer.

Photos of public sculptures, taken from the street?

The instructions state that only photographs of non-artistic objects, or old works of art are allowed. What about murals or sculptures that are set up in public places, and photographed from public streets?

The example I had in mind can be found here: Photo of Tensegrity Structure, 17th Street Plaza, Denver, taken from 17th street Pciszek (talk) 01:36, 10 November 2021 (UTC)

See COM:FOP, and note that it varies from country to country. It can also matter, for some countries, what the sbject is and whether it's 2D or 3D and whether it's "creative" or "graphic" etc. Your link doesn't work, but if this is an artwork in the USA it's not covered by COM:FOP US and so we can't use it. @Ozagib: . The photo, File:Father in shades.jpg was taken from a profile photo from twitter, https://twitter.com/father. It was not shown you own the copyright and therefore it was deleted. To keep the photo you need to follow several steps:
  1. Is this photo in scope, please read COM:SCOPE. In this case, it appears to be en:Father (rapper), so in scope.
  2. By far most images on the internet are copyrighted. You have to find out who has the copyright. In most cases it is the photographer. Can also be the subject if he has a contract with the photographer confirming the transfer of copyright.
  3. Contact the person who has the copyright
  4. Follow the procedure on VRT. If succesful the photo can be undeleted.

Is there a template which shows the number of files in a category?

Hi all

I want to do some work to improve documentation of Pattypan, one of the main tools used to mass upload images to Commons. I'd really like to have a counter on the page to show the number of images Pattypan has been used to upload. All images uploaded are added to Category:Uploaded_with_pattypan so I'm wondering if there is a template I can use to just show the number of files in the category.

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 17:01, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

@John Cummings: Not quite a template, but you can use the {{PAGESINCATEGORY}} magic word to produce the number of files in a category. For instance, {{PAGESINCATEGORY:Uploaded with pattypan|files}} gives "1,727,799". I don't think you can restrict it to just images, though. --bjh21 (talk) 19:07, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

--Allenchen.sky (talk) 06:27, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

@Allenchen.sky: This picture is missing a copyright licence which is something different from the trademark you added. You need to provide evidence that either the copyright holder released this logo under a free licence (which would have been stated at the website where you found it) or that it is too simple to be copyrighted in China. Then you need to add a licence template in addition to the trademark. I fear though neither of these conditions can be applied, so we can most likely not keep the image. De728631 (talk) 07:07, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
@Allenchen.sky: Hi, and welcome. In reference to the source http://www.brnn.com/ , where is the free license or evidence of public domain status required by COM:L?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:08, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
@De728631: Ok, I got your mean, but if the website not refer the licence, it won't be accepted, right? And actually, I want to use the non-free use template, but after I used it, it had many problem @.@, maybe I use not correctly? Thank you for your help!
@Jeff G.: Okay, your mean is the same as De728631, right? I will try to find the license. after I found it, then I just need to add the template to the content, all will be normal? Thank you so much! --Allenchen.sky (talk) 07:33, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
Please note that Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use. Fair use or non-free use is only possible if you upload an image directly at certain Wikipedias, but here, all uploads need to be free for anyone to use for any purpose. So, if the website does not state a licence for the logo, it is automatically not free to use. De728631 (talk) 07:37, 11 November 2021 (UTC)
@Allenchen.sky: We have similar meanings. The logo may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so brnn may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:56, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

That is a blocked account (blocked as a sockpuppet), and I see you are asking this without being logged in. Updating an image

Hi, I recently uploaded an updated verison of an image (here, last one in file history: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2021_Japanese_general_election,_composition.svg) but the new version appears only in the Media Viewer visualization, while the old one still remains in place in the image page and in all the pages that use that image. Sorting out images of astronomical galaxies from search term "galaxy"

Hello! I have a business providing educational material for children on astronomy. As part of this, I make full-color poster prints of galaxies. @Saida Omme Tania: Hi, and welcome. I wrote to you at en:User talk:Saida Omme Tania. Username

When I'm trying to register in order to upload a photo, I can't register under my name (Jean-Pierre Martel). I am told that it's too close to an existing user (Jean-pierre martel). Public Artwork

Is there any way to post an image, taken by oneself, of a public piece of art where one has permission from the artist to publish the photo? Is there a form that the artist can sign off on?

The last time I tried to do this, I got permission from a museum to upload a photo of a piece of pottery from their collection. I thought I had followed all the protocols and checked all the boxes. but that single photo was deleted. I was confused at the time--not as to why it had been deleted, but what I had filled out incorrectly so that the image was deleted.

This time around, I thought that the process of supplying permissions information would be clear. I was wrong. So--I expect my photo to be deleted. But this time I would like to figure out how to get these images up.

Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2021 (talk • contribs) Sicklemoon 23:46, 13 November (UTC)

@Superstrongboy: Hello. You need to find an image of Mr. Chihane that has been released under a free licence such as Creative Commons Attribution. Usually all recent photographs of living persons are copyrighted and non-free and you cannot use them without an explicit permission from the copyright holder. I searched for free images at Google and Flickr but there appear to be none. So I'm afraid you may just have to wait until a photographer decides to publish a free-to-use portrait of Mr. Chihane. @Infrogmation: Thanks. Would you delete them on that basis if uploaded here?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:54, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
The Flickr titles indicate that it is a character from The Powerpuff Girls. The Flickr images are freely licenced, which would make them great additions to Commons, especially given the lack of existing depictions of those characters.
Wait, is there a good reason we lack existing depictions? I found the following:
Depending on how this discussion goes, we might want to import two images from Flickr, or nominate some of our existing ones for deletion. Brianjd (talk) 06:14, 15 November 2021 (UTC)
  •  Comment Wikimedia Commons is generally not a good place for illustrations of things like current copyrighted cartoon characters. Details of copyright law vary by country, but anything that would be a good accurate illustration would generally be a copyright violation either outright or as Derivative Work. Unlike here on Commons, English Wikipedia allows limited "fair use" of copyrighted material, useful in illustrating such things. Some media depicting such things are sometimes here under curious loopholes, like combination of countries allowing "Freedom of panorama" and images of illegally placed graffiti, though even this can be contentious. By the way, I think those popsicles would be lousy illustrations of the character. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 20:13, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

How can I get a list of the categories that files in a category are in?

Hi all

(As above) I'm doing some work on the documentation for Pattypan, one of the things I want to do is understand and list which organisations have uploaded files using Pattypan. All the files uploaded using Pattypan are in Category:Uploaded with pattypan, is there a way to get a list of all the other other categories these files are in so I pull out the categories for organisations?

Thanks John Cummings (talk) 18:09, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

@John Cummings: I think this query gives the answer, but it may not be very helpful because there are 191,215 such categories: https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/59958. --bjh21 (talk) 20:27, 16 November 2021 (UTC)
It looks like the query is standard SQL, and could presumably be extended to filter and sort the results to make them more useful. Alternatively, it might be better to look at the uploaders of files in that category. Brianjd (talk) 05:29, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks Bjh21 and Brianjd, wow thats a lot of categories, looking at the first few pages there are definately some useful categroies in there, but as you say, so much noise. Would it be possible to filter the search by number of files in both categories? E.g a list which shows only uploads with more than 500 files in both categries? That would hopefully slim the list down a lot without loosing too many relevant categories. Yes and also the uploaders ranked by number of uploads would be extremely helpful, I probably know quite a few of them and can ask them what they've done. John Cummings (talk) 09:01, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
@John Cummings: Good idea! I've updated the query to include the frequency of each intersection and to sort by that frequency: https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/59958. @Brianjd: Yes, Quarry is a tool for running SQL queries against copies of the databases underlying Wikimedia wikis, including Commons. I'm not entirely sure that the wikitech:Wikitech:Cloud Services Terms of use allow one to write a query that exposes user names, so I'm not going to try that. --bjh21 (talk) 10:28, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
@Bjh21: It looks clear to me: there are strict limits on information about End Users (defined as "the individuals using your Cloud Services Project"), but no limits on data from the production wikis. For extra protection, you could limit it to users with large numbers of uploads, which seems to be what John Cummings is interested in anyway. Brianjd (talk) 10:53, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
@Brianjd: If you're confident in your interpretation of the rules, you can always create your own query. --bjh21 (talk) 11:15, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
@Bjh21: I am confident in my interpretation of the rules, but not so confident in using Quarry, and I have other things to do right now. Brianjd (talk) 11:23, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Can a webm video be afterwards equipped with an intro pic shown as preview?

The headline says pretty much everything. Problem: Even good and interesting videos often have a first image (which is then seen in the Wiki article by the reader) which is absolutely worthless, as it shows an empty scene before any action starts - example here. Is there a relatively simple option to take an interesting screenshot/frame from, e.g., the middle section of the video and to add it to be shown as the preview pic? Or is there even an easier option, e.g., including wikitext to the file desciption that the frame at x:xx min shall be shown as preview in the article? When the video is used in article you can select the initial image with "thumbtime=Time" (see en:Wikipedia:Extended_image_syntax#Initial_still_image. I do not know if it is possible to set a default initial image in the image description page. MKFI (talk) 06:57, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Uploading CC BY 4.0 Images from the Natural History Museum, London

Hello, this is my first time uploading a photograph from the Natural History Museum of London's entomological collection, I posted this photograph on Commons and I am unsure of how to get it to par with other uploads of type specimens (such as this) from the museum that are already on Commons as I am unfamiliar with the proper coding required to get the documentation properly formatted through the Wikimedia Commons Upload tool. Please understand if my wording is incorrect, I am generally unfamiliar with how things work entirely around here. Here is the source of the photograph just in case. The big question: why are both images uploaded with a cc-by-4.0 license? The natural History Museum published both as cc-zero. --C.Suthorn (talk) 13:46, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
Not really the biggest question at the top of my head, I'm not from the museum so I cannot answer that for them. I mainly want to ask about the proper formatting because I want to upload images with the proper attribution and would really like the help. -Ornithoptera (talk) 22:43, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
The museum gave a cc-zero license. You (user:Ornithoptera) changed that to cc-4. Unless you (user:Ornithoptera) are the museum, it really is not a question for the museum. About the formatting: Just ignore that. It does not really matter. Someone will fix it sooner or later. Or you will do it in some years, when you have learned it. --C.Suthorn (talk) 22:51, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
Thats fair, I didn't change it to cc-4 though, all images on the specimen records are labelled with "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ © The Trustees of the Natural History Museum, London" so I'm uncertain as to why that is the case. I didn't willingly change the copyright on a whim, and I still have no clue about the licensing. All specimens accessed on the gallery view list them as cc-4.0, so that's where the confusion stems from, still no clue as to why though. Ornithoptera (talk) 22:59, 18 November 2021 (UTC)
@C.Suthorn: I think you're mistaken about the licence. While the source page says "License CC0-1.0", clicking on either of the pictures puts up a note at the bottom of the screen saying "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/". So I think the text of the page is under {{Cc-zero}}, but the images are {{Cc-by-4.0}}. Of course, that's still different from the {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}} that File:013323996 Petalura ingentissima dorsal.jpg is currently tagged with. @Ornithoptera: I would suggest not trying to work out how to make the Upload Wizard produce what you want: I don't think its really flexible enough. Instead, you can edit the wikitext of the file after uploading using the "Edit" link at the top of the file page. You can use the same link at the top of an existing file to see how its description is coded. It looks to me like stealing the formatting from File:013377150 Cethosia cydippe planti Tennent 2015 HT.jpg should be reasonably simple. --bjh21 (talk) 23:14, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Combine/Merge ~commonswiki account with existing one

I just noticed, that an old account of mine got imported as https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Tuxxilla~commonswiki

Is it possible to remove "Tuxxilla~commonswiki" and link the existing entries to my current account?

Organization Logo Upload

Hello,

I am working for an trade association and I would like to upload our logo, adding it into our official page.

I'm not the designer, but I have full permission to do so.

How do I do it? Which licence is best?

Thank you, Lorenzo — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lorenzo Canu Oscar (talk • contribs) 16:35, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

@Lorenzo Canu Oscar: Hi, and welcome. The logo may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your official website or social media presence or send permission via VRT. If you can't get a compliant license, the logo may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If your organization does plan to issue a free license, I recommend {{CC-BY-SA-4.0}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}, with a clear indication of to whom the image should be attributed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:35, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

Need official email from organization but there isn't one

Hi there, Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't find the answer. I recently uploaded three photos of a roller coaster that my friend took when we were at a theme park together. Neither of us are professional photographers or anything official in that way. When I uploaded the photos I followed the Wikipedia rules, had him fill out the 3.0 release agreement and uploaded the photos. He didn't want his real world name on here so I put his instagram user name as the source and author. However when I emailed the help desk the copyright permission sheet that he had filled out they said it had to be emailed by the organization, and not a personal email address. However there is no "organization" email address. How do I work around this/resolve this issue? Image preview size

Hello,

I don't understand how the image preview is determined in Commons.

E.g., I translated the file File:2021 Hungarian opposition primary - Constituencies.svg to File:2021 Hungarian opposition primary - Constituencies de.svg but I note that the preview image size of the second file is much smaller (undesired :-( ). How could I change this?

--Furfur Diskussion 23:01, 20 November 2021 (UTC)

@Furfur: Apparently your upload is in fact smaller than the original SVG. Your file has a nominal size of 512 × 260 pixels, whereas the English version is 879 × 446 pixels. This is reflected in the preview thumbnails. So you may want to check your SVG file and probably enlarge the objects proportionally. De728631 (talk) 12:55, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
Ok, thank you, I understand. I was a little bit irritated that very large files are displayed in a small preview and small files appeared large. But the preview apparently has nothing to do with the file resolution or file size. --Furfur Diskussion 13:00, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

outdated copy of a book

Hello,

How to remove all previous outdated copies of my book from <Uploads>? I want to keep here only one updated copy.

Thank you. Igor Evgen — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eugene-Igor (talk • contribs) 06:23, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello. As of today, all your uploads have been deleted because they were considered mere advertisements of your work. Commons is not just a webhost but all uploads need to have an educational purpose. De728631 (talk) 12:51, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Delete pictures stolen from the Internet?

To my understanding, you can't just upload pictures you find online because the license needs to be free. I came across File:Chase Garbers 7 20180901 153303 NP.jpg, and I doubt the uploader took the picture because they have an outside URL and an author (Kelley L Cox) in the file description. Can I find an administrator to delete the picture? Is there a place that I file a request? ConcreteOski (talk) 08:49, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

@ConcreteOski: Hello and thank you for bringing this up. I tagged the file for a timed deletion, i.e. it will be deleted after seven days unless anyone can provide evidence for a free licence. Next time, you can do this too by using the "tools" menu on the left. There should be a link called "No permission" which sets up the timed deletion for lack of permission. Or you may use the "Nominate for deletion" where you can provide a reasoning why you think a file should go. The latter method will then automatically create a discussion page to debate the deletion of said file. De728631 (talk) 12:32, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
The other upload from the same user, File:Davante Adams Minicamp 2021.webp is an obvious copyright violation and I have tagged that for speedy deletion. Beeblebrox (talk) 02:37, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

@Jaimevmagnelli: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload png and smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg images as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. The following applies to each image. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png or smaller jpg image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including any metadata, but if you were not the original image designer or photographer, that person may need to license it on their official website or social media or send permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:12, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

ABout Brand Logos

There is some political clauses about Brand Logos? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thales.hferreira (talk • contribs) 20:29, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

There are no "political" clauses, but we do care about copyright there, too. As any other upload, brand logos need to be free to use for anyone and for any purpose from a copyright point of view. Non-copyright disclaimers such as {{Trademarked}} may apply but those will not keep a free logo away from Commons. In this context "free" does not mean "free of charge to download" but free from copyright restrictions because the design is too old or too simple, or it comes with a free licence at the original source. Using a NYC booking photo from newspaper

I've found some past threads addressing this subject, but there seems to be some conflicting info in those discussions, so out of an abundance of caution I'm afraid I have to trouble everyone for your time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

I found a New York City police booking photograph of a person that was published in the 2 January 1945 issue of Madison, Wisconsin's Capital Times. There is no copyright notice anywhere in the issue, and it looks like issues of that newspaper before 20 January 1954 should generally be okay to use (if I'm reading that website correctly?).

I know that the high-quality booking photos directly from the New York City police are indeed copyrighted, but I don't know about slightly lower quality versions from newspaper archives. Would a newspaper version be public domain due to the date of publication and no copyright? Or would the newspaper's version still be copyrighted because the original source photo is?

(Hopefully this all made sense! Just trying to do the right thing. Thank you so much.) Beginning (talk) 00:10, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

Uploading modified files

I've modified some files retrieved from the Commons. I always thought that modified versions would be uploaded to the same page from which the file was retrieved, so that all of the modifications to a graphic can be found in one place. However upon closer inspection, it looks like only the account holder of a file can upload to the file history table on the page for the graphic in question. Is that the case?

In other words, is the idea that I upload the modified version of the file on a separate page that I create, and not on the page where I procured the original image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bodkinsodds (talk • contribs) 23:14, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

Please see COM:OVERWRITE. In general, modified files should never be uploaded on top of the original file, but should become a new file name. Small modifications are allowed though, such as cropping a file or retouching values like hue and saturation. Also maps showing member states of some organisation or other groups of states may need updates that can be done by overwriting the old version. To do this, usually anyone can use the link "Upload a new version of this file" below the file history table. De728631 (talk) 23:46, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
@Bodkinsodds: User:De728631 says, "such as cropping a file". That's true if you are doing something like removing a white border, but in general you should not overwrite someone else's image with a crop, and even retouching hue and saturation are only appropriate if it is an unambiguous improvement, which is often a tricky judgment call. Unless you've consulted with the original uploader, I strongly recommend uploading your reworks under a different filename, and using appropriate templates like {{Derived from}} and {{Derivative works}} to link the two images. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

@Riskwiki: Hello and welcome. As to your questions:
  1. Yes, you can edit the Wikipedia article Eradication of infectious diseases where the image is being used and modify the caption over there.

content regarding Somalia: how much fiction is it?

I'd like to discuss the uploads by Boqortooyada Soojireenka Soomaaliya. I am certain that all those photographs are heavily doctored; the flags and seals are probably complete bollocks; and the maps are not much better. The map of the historical en:Ajuran Empire is wildly optimistic about the influence of their rulers.

I have seen so much fictional BS recently that my first reaction was to request wholesale deletion; but then I saw the stuff is in use! And I remembered my recently learned lesson that fake-history maps should not be deleted from Commons when they are needed for use in patriotic fake-history articles in the respective language versions. Can someone versed in Somali or the current politics of Somalia, or maybe both, clear this up? --Enyavar (talk) 22:30, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Most of these files lack a permission or a source, or both. I tagged them all. Yann (talk) 20:19, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Can I use this photo in Wikipedia?

I intend to use this photo: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/apac/other/largeimage69040.html

Here is the source: http://www.bl.uk/onlinegallery/onlineex/apac/other/019xzz000000630u00005000.html

I wish to use it in this article about a historic institution. The photo represents the old location of the institution The Bengal Club.

I would like like to know if the photo is in the public domain. If not, can I upload it on the basis of fair use?

Thank you. Anderson1970 (talk) 23:05, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

Yes, that is old enough to be in the public domain. Remember that the commons, and several language wikis do not accept fair use media files. The English wiki does under their very strict policy. See w:WP:NFCC Ww2censor (talk) 23:16, 26 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you * @Ww2censor: for answering my question. I had another question related to the same page. There is another photo of the club, taken in 1912, available here: https://canmore.org.uk/collection/1196774 But the website says that the image is copyrighted and says as follows:
Attribution: © Courtesy of HES (Indian Glass Plate Collection) Licence Type: Educational
You may: copy, display, store and make derivative works [eg documents] solely for licensed personal use at home or solely for licensed educational institution use by staff and students on a secure intranet.
Under these conditions: Display Attribution, No Commercial Use or Sale, No Public Distribution [eg by hand, email, web]
So can this image be uploaded to the article? If yes, will it qualify as public domain or fair use? Thank you.
Anderson1970 (talk) 06:17, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
Probably not based on the Hirtle chart as there is no evidence it was published previously to being on a website. The collection attribution tells us nothing about the author or any previous publication. Normal anonymous unpublished works are copyright in the US for 120 years from creation, even though India for photos of this age the term is 50 years. The image must be free in both the US and country of origin. I believe this is the current position. Ww2censor (talk) 16:29, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Question

What is the difference between a city's skyline and cityscape? Usually there's a category "Cityscapes of XYZ", then a subcat "XYZ skylines". What's the difference between these two? Etoza (talk) 23:41, 26 November 2021 (UTC)

Questions on a Historically-Significant Bio

Hello,

I'm seeking some wiki expertise. I'm just creating my first ever wiki page. I was hired by a client to write a bio of a historically significant person. I've uploaded the text to the page and it is well referenced with published sources. I'm wondering about two things: 1. The client gave me a photo of the person in question (the person died in 2002). I can't seem to upload it due to supposed copyright issues. Can someone share what steps I need to take to include the photo (the photo is in possession of the family/client and it is not under copyright)? 2. Is there any way to "fast track" the page beyond adding tags?

Thank you, DavidGoldman99 DavidGoldman99 (talk) 17:36, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

@DavidGoldman99: Hi,
1. Be aware of potential conflict of interest. Please read en:WP:COI.
2. For all information regarding the article, you need to inquire in the Wikipedia project itself. On Commons, we are only concerned about multimedia files.
3. For the picture, we need the permission of the copyright holder, who is usually the photographer. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:10, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
@DavidGoldman99: It would be unusual (but not impossible) for a Canadian photo from the mid-20th century to be "not under copyright". As far as I can think, that would be the case only if the photographer died no later than 1970. Is that specifically something you know and can document, or is there some other reason the photo would not be copyrighted? - Jmabel ! talk 22:38, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
DavidGoldman99: For Canadian copyright you probably should carefully review Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Canada. Besides a conflict of interest, if you are being paid for your editing you MUST also disclose that fact per Paid-contribution disclosure.

Naming convention for Creator namespace

Hi, I am wanting to set up a {{Creator}} for Category:Edward Fielding (painter) but we also have Category:Edward Fielding. The normal naming convention is to set "Creator:(First name) (Second name)" such as "Creator:Edward Fielding." However, that is likely to cause confusion later without a disambiguator. Is there a guideline on prefered disambiguators? My first thoughts are to use either "Creator:Edward Fielding (painter)" or "Creator:Edward Fielding (1834-1892). From Hill To Shore (talk) 10:56, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

"Creator:Edward Fielding (painter)" is fine for me. Redirects are always possible. Yann (talk) 11:02, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

Identifying an author for an illustration on a couple of pages in a PDF

I have found pages 5 and 8 of File:Journal of botany, British and foreign. (IA mobot31753002397732).pdf have been created by Category:Edward Fielding (painter) and I'd like to link his name. However, while the software allows us to preview each page of the PDF as a JPEG, I can't see any way to record details for individual pages. I am guessing that I will need to select the largest scale of the preview of each page, download it, reupload it as a new file with appropriate creator and licence details and then include a link back to the PDF. Is that the best way to do it? From Hill To Shore (talk) 11:07, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

@From Hill To Shore: Yes, that seems to be a good idea. I would download the whole pdf though and then make high-resolution snapshots of the images in question, so you don't need to upload the entire pages. Any decent PDF viewer should have this snapshot option and the resolution can usually be adjusted in the general settings of the viewer. De728631 (talk) 14:10, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

  • You should be able to find the usernames in the histories of the relevant articles (in Wikipedia) or uploaded images (here). If you provided your email address at that time, and still have access to that email, you should be able to reset a password. If not, I'm afraid you are out of luck. - Jmabel ! talk 18:38, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

uploading non free image

I want to upload a non-free logo to commons. I know which tag to use and what to write in "rationale" but I have no idea where to input the template for a non-free logo. First off, what do I select under "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work:"? I've tried to paste the template under "Another reason not mentioned above" but when I press preview, a message for speedy deletion comes up, so I guess this isn't the right way. What should I do in order to state my rationale and upload a non-free logo thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theodore Christopher (talk • contribs) 00:14, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Theodore Christopher. If it's really "non-free" then you shouldn't upload it here (See COM:L). If you intend to use this logo in a particular article then it's better to upload it, under a fair-use rationale, direct to the Wikipedia where the article is. Note that not every Wikipedia accepts fair-use. Also, note that many logos don't fulfill the threshold of originality and, therefore, are not warranted for copyright protection. Kacamata! Dimmi!!! 00:29, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. I only intend to use it in a single article on English Wikipedia, so how do I do a direct upload? Theodore Christopher (talk) 01:14, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Also, the logo might not even be complex enough (this is it: https://usa.afsglobal.org/cb/assets/imgs/CBYX-150px.png) but I didn't know how to judge it Theodore Christopher (talk) 01:16, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
That's right around the borderline for complexity. Just uploading on en-wiki is probably simplest.
You can upload at en:Special:Upload. - Jmabel ! talk 05:16, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

Problems with auto-complete and searching

1. Auto-complete/suggestion of category names in the Upload Wizard and also the "Search Wikimedia Commons" box seems broken. In many cases, it has not been bringing up the category that I need. I will give one example: Category:Newport harbour, Isle of Wight. I start typing "Newport harb..." etc. in the "add categories" field of Upload Wizard, but "Newport harbour, Isle of Wight" does not come up (some other partial matches do). Exactly the same thing in the "Search Wikimedia Commons" box with "Category:Newport harb..." etc. However, in the "HotCat" entry field it does work. I start typing "Newport harb...", and up it comes in the list, "Newport harbour, Isle of Wight". AFAIK, this feature always used to work reliably, so something seems to have broken.

2. When I type "Category:Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight" (trivial capitalisation difference) into "Search Wikimedia Commons", it fails to find "Category:Newport harbour, Isle of Wight", just saying "We didn't find any results". Surely this is not how it is meant to work? ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:33, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Request permission to rename files

I would like to request permission to rename files, if necessary limited to files that I have uploaded. It seems a bit tiresome that I cannot immediately correct e.g. small typing errors, but have to request someone else to do this. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 20:37, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

HOW TO UPLOAD MY OWN PROFIL

Thank you for your interest. You need to start by making significant contributions to one of the many Wikimedia projects over a period of time. After that you can start considering uploading a freely licensed photo of yourself. Thuresson (talk) 21:31, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

Regarding photos taken at a photo studio (the photo studio has stated that it has waived its copyright)

I have created a personal page on wikipedia. At that time, I received a photo from the person who was involved in the personal page, and uploaded it from wikipedia COMMONS. Later, a user pointed out that the photo in question violated the copyright, and it was deleted. When we checked the source of the photo with the person who provided it to us, he told us that the photo was taken at a photo studio before, and when we checked with the photo studio, they explained that they had waived the copyright when they paid for it. In this case, how can I upload the file without being pointed out for copyright infringement? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noblecafe (talk • contribs) 04:00, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

  • @Noblecafe: If the photo studio has transferred copyright, then who now owns the copyright? (That is, who was the purchaser?) - Jmabel ! talk 05:18, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you for your question. The purchase was made by the person who is preparing the personal page on wikipedia. Therefore, the copyright is held by the subject himself. I have received the photos directly from the person himself, and as the creator of his personal wiki page, I am uploading them to wikipedia COMMONS on his behalf. Pinging @Jmabel. Brianjd (talk) 11:50, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
@Noblecafe: Hi, and welcome. How may we confirm that with the photo studio? Please send details regarding the copyright transfer via VRT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:50, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I am currently contacting the photo studio and preparing a memorandum transferring the copyright. I will send that one to VRT. The memorandum will probably be in Japanese, is that okay? I will translate it into English if necessary. Noblecafe (talk) 02:28, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
@Noblecafe: You may use the interactive release generator atop COM:CONSENT/jp (or copy the text from that page into a word processor and configure the variables), print the release out, have an authorized representative of the studio sign the printed release, and email a scan of the signed release via permissions-ja@wikimedia.org with a digital copy of the text used. To be doubly sure, you may do the same in English with COM:CONSENT and permissions-commons@wikimedia.org.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:15, 1 December 2021 (UTC)
It might suffice for the owner of the copyright simply to assert (to the VRT team) that they own the copyright, and it was part of their transaction with the studio (same process to contact the VRT team); that would be up to them to decide. But definitely the best thing, if possible, would be an email to the VRT team from the studio itself. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. Since the photo studio has difficulty communicating in English and via email, I will try to explain the process to VRT on their behalf. Noblecafe (talk) 02:31, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
If the studio sents an email (=text) to VRT, the VRT volunteers can simply run the text through an online translation tool. Important that the mail is sent from an official email address of the studio (for example if the studio has its own internet domain). --C.Suthorn (talk) 15:59, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice. I will go to the photo studio today and explain the situation and try to send an email to VRT from the photo studio. Noblecafe (talk) 03:03, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
