Screenshot of GNU GPLv03 licensed software

Hi, I want to upload a screenshot of a computer program that is distributed using GNU GPLv03. Can I upload it or not? , should I use the same license or can I use another one? I will understand if you do not understand the question well, since my mother tongue is Spanish and my knowledge in English is not very advanced, so I used an automatic translator to translate my question into English, and I am not sure if it is read well. Sincerily, Pardalys (talk) 18:00, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Pardalys: Hi, and welcome. You may use GPLv3.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:28, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Usurped image

HI, I left a note on Yann's talk page before realising that they're not very active at present. My watchlist has changed beyond recognition and is nigh-on useless now (limited to 30 days/1000 pages), nor can I remember any other admins here with whom I've dealt before. Could someone please respond to this query here & I'll post a note on Yann's page to that effect? Thanks. - Sitush (talk) 11:25, 5 July 2020 (UTC) I think it is a new watchlist design that is confusing me. Am playing with Prefs. - Sitush (talk) 11:41, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

@Sitush: I've reverted File:Peacock.jpg to the original version and left a note on the overwriter's talk page. I'm afraid I can't do anything about your watchlist, though. --bjh21 (talk) 12:27, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
@Bjh21: Thanks but I don't think the revert has worked - I can see your note there but the image is still the recent uploader's image. - Sitush (talk) 13:18, 5 July 2020 (UTC)
Forget that. Must be a caching issue. OK now, thanks. - Sitush (talk) 13:19, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Who owns a death notice in a newspaper?

Hi there! I recently uploaded the file File:Screen Shot of death notice of Anne Taylor as published in the Sydney Morning Herald 1 October 1988.png

It's screenshot (by me) of death notice found here https://archiearchive.files.wordpress.com/2019/12/angus-mum-death-notice.png but first published in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1988. So, it's an image of an image of an image.

From my understanding of the law it's a photograph of a public notice. Can I get some guidance on this?

The Little PlatoonThe Little Platoon (talk) 01:19, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

@The Little Platoon: Hi, and welcome. The death notice is copyrighted by the Sydney Morning Herald, funeral home, or family of the deceased. Please have the copyright holder license it on their website or social media or send permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:15, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
Convenience link: File:Screen Shot of death notice of Anne Taylor as published in the Sydney Morning Herald 1 October 1988.png. It's not obvious to me that there is enough there to be copyrightable, this might be PD-ineligible. You might want to ask on Commons:Village pump/copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 16:07, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: @Jeff G.: my thanks to you both. I think that's a good tip about what is and isn't copyright-able. Seems to me there's not enough there for anyone to say the information is original enough to anyone, that's to say, it's inherently public domain. The Little Platoon (talk) 21:58, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

upload with overwrite @commons

I have be confused by uploading with overwriting at Commons. Example File:Covid-19-term2.png : upload seems to be ok, the thumbnails seem to be the new one, but clicking shows the old file (at time after upload completion). At this time today it looks like fixed - so ..... bad to explain ..... Is there a time delay for activation of the new picture ? or do I have to wait a bit more until the new pic shows up in the documents ?? I did not recognize this behavior with upload to local wiki, just only with two files moved to Commons.

Sorry about this dummy (newbee) question, but, as you can see in history of this sample file I worked a bit helpless. At least this File has only two real versions, the very first from 20 June 2020 and just only one correction 10 days later 30 June 2020 at 21:15 (identical with now top current file from 30 June 2020 21:37). What have I missed ??

Greetings Pqz602 (answere DE or EN will be ok, German mothertongue, but IT-Terms more used to EN, Win10 PC switched to US-EN)

I don't think about cache, at least not mine (browser cache will be cleared by command if I have such problems, I tried also restarts). The upload becomes not immediatly "aktiv" or "current" after finishing without errormsg. Calling the link in regular way shows the "old current". Going through history and clicking the uploaded new - it is uploaded and will be shown (even not beeing the current one, just as all others in history). Is there some admin or similar action involved to make the upload current ??
*Just at this moment it shows the correct current, also with File:Nowc3005.gif (had same problems). I'm just asking and don't want to produce more garbage-files for testing. We can put this post in "wait" until next upload/updating /w overwriting Nowc3005.gif in ~1 week. Because of just using only new data in same Graphic there is no need to to rename and use each time new filenames. --Pqz602 (talk) 19:05, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
There are several caches along the way besides the one on your browser. Honest, things like this are caching problems. - Jmabel ! talk 19:50, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks and .... I'll wait some time more next time and see what happens. --Pqz602 (talk) 13:42, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
@Pqz602: While you wait, you might want to read COM:FAQ#PURGE.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:58, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks both, you both made my day. I have to use "purge" to pass through the server caches. I will read it completely before next upload. @Jeff: i didn't find that explanation before by searching around. To my own browser (cache): Im using Seamonkey (Mozilla Package similar to FF, Thunderbird and Composer in one package). It is not in your explanations, but: I'm used to Netscape with OS/2 since the 90s (IBM retired) starting with Netscape, ... and SM is the latest follow-on of Netscape. SM (Win and OS/2) has a configurable menu (menu bar - tools - clear private data) which clears cookies, cache, and a lot more. I have configured everything to clear, except saved passwords. These options can be triggered during session without restart, forcing sometimes new login, but at least my own local cookies and cache are completely cleaned. I haven't looked for a short cut, it needs only two mouse clicks. I did this already always before starting upload/overwrite and then recalling the file (otherwise by default I always will get my own cache, even with reload). So .... next uploading after learning about purge. --Pqz602 (talk) 20:30, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G., @Jmabel : my todays update of File:Nowc3005.gif works perfect with manual purge. thanks again, my query may be closed/archived or .... --Pqz602 (talk) 20:56, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Link Audio File to Image

Hi all,

Is it possible to have an image on the page, with an audio link? So when you click image, it makes the sound? — Preceding unsigned comment added by EliasBueno (talk • contribs) 05:43, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@EliasBueno: It is not possible to do this on Wikimedia Commons. The best you can do is provide a separate link to the audio file in the description text. This may be possible on other sites, if that's what you're talking about (your question is a little vague). – BMacZero (🗩) 05:52, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

deleted media

Why was a picture that is my own work and for which I released all rights to and which has been on Wikipedia for several years, suddenly deleted because of "lack of permission." This action seems capricious at best and arbitrary, I tried to reinstate it and was threatened by, possibly an administrator, with loss of my editing privileges. So much for the peoples encyclopedia. Happlyi (talk) 18:35, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

Someone else uploaded the same image, incidentally: File:TBT Publicity Pic.jpg. If you really are the photographer who took that publicity shot, you can explain that at the deletion request. If you aren't, then I'm afraid the picture is not your own work, but the photographer's. --rimshottalk 19:39, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

I'm not sure in what to choose

Hello, I'm uploading a photo that I've taken of old art (1598), but I'm not sure in something: what do I choose between "It is my own work" and "It is not my own work"? --StrowmanBrown2 (talk) 07:11, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

  • @StrowmanBrown2: Assuming it is an accurate photo of a pre-existing 2-dimensional work of art, there is no copyrightable aspect to the photograph; the description should describe the underlying work of art which is not your own work.
  • If it is a sculpture, though, or has a three-dimensional picture frame elaborate enough that it matters significantly from what angle it is photographed, then the photo is copyrightable and would be "own work". But then, after uploading, in the permissions field of the Information template you should explain that the underlying work is in the public domain, and why. - Jmabel ! talk 14:29, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Well, I've taken the photos of these artworks: Cosimo De' Medici's portrait and Caravaggio's "Scudo con testa di Medusa". But Commons asks me if it is my own work or not, and I don't know what to choose: I have taken the photo, but obviously I didn't make those artworks! What do I choose? --StrowmanBrown2 (talk) 15:16, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

  • As I just said: for an accurate photo of a pre-existing 2-dimensional work of art, there is no copyrightable aspect to the photograph. Snapping a shutter does not make it in any relevant sense your own work, any more than if you copied a chapter from a book. So, no, it is not your own work. - Jmabel ! talk 19:48, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Sorry if I bother you again, but what should I put in the "Source" field and in "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work"? --StrowmanBrown2 (talk) 07:01, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

  • My apologies: I don't know the Wizard well (I upload with Special:Upload, since I know the wikitext I am trying to produce), so I don't know what choices it offers. Is there a choice about "work is in public domain", "author has been dead more than XX years" or something like that? If someone is more familiar with the Wizard, could you please help this user? - Jmabel ! talk 15:27, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: If I choose "This file is not my own work" I have to fill out: source; author(s); why I am sure I have the right to publish the file. --StrowmanBrown2 (talk) 16:15, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
May be there is a better solution - but for such cases one can choose own( work) and, (soon) after uploading, edit the file information to own photo. Hope it helps a little. Best regards --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 19:26, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
@StrowmanBrown2: You chose a complex situation for your first uploads. :) About the photos you took of the Scudo, I assume that they look more or less like, for example, this photo, i.e. they show the object and also some of its environment in the museum. Is that correct? If so, Commons requires that you indicate both the information about the artwork and the information about your photo. The tool "Upload Wizard" may have some advantages, but it can offer only a limited number of options and it may be impractical when having to deal with some necessary subtleties. I don't use that upload tool either, so I can't help you navigate through its labyrinth. One simple solution can be to upload with the "it is your own work" path. Then, after the upload is done, you can edit the description page and refine the information if necessary. Another solution, and it is my personal suggestion, can be this: use the basic upload form, write a filename, erase the default text in the big "summary" box and replace it with the following text (fill the blank fields with the "photo date", "photo license" of your choice (in the parameter of "Self|") and, if you want, add a "photo description"):

... preview and upload. It's more simple than it sounds when I try to explain it. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:27, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Let's see what you decide to do with the Caravaggio and the result of that first upload. Then we can continue with Cosimo's portrait. For it, you can use the same method, or you can use the template "Artwork" instead of the template "Art photo". It may depend what the photo shows exactly, as Jmabel explained above. If the photo shows only the artwork, Commons asks that you release your photo to the public domain. (The photo is actually your own work and you own the copyright on your photographic reproduction in some countries, but Commons asks that you release it to the public domain.) Is it the portrait by Pontormo? -- Asclepias (talk) 20:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

@Asclepias: OK. And yes, it is the portrait by Pontormo. --StrowmanBrown2 (talk) 21:30, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

There are different templates you can use to format the description page. They're equally valid. The choice is subjective. Some make the situation clearer to the reader than others. For the Pontormo, if you upload with the basic upload form, you can copy in the summary box something like this, for example, or anything else of you choice:

Or, if you upload with the Upload Wizard, you can try to navigate through a path that will work for you and, after the upload, you can edit the description page to reformat it the way you want, for example with the same thing as above, or anything else of your choice. -- Asclepias (talk) 10:58, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
You are asking the same question as before and I can only give you the same answers as before. I'm not familiar with the Upload Wizard tool. I don't know if that tool has a straightforward option for that sort of situation. The use of the basic form would nicely avoid this problem. Anyway, if you use the Upload Wizard, I would say just choose any option that will get you to do the upload. After the upload, if necessary, fix the description page. Try to not obsess too much about the options. As long as your file is legitimate, the important thing is the correct result at the end, not really the way you get there. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:06, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Image is unreadable, I am trying to upload a readable version but am being blocked from doing so.

This image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Warptable.gif is completely unreadable and effectively worthless. The image itself is taken from a paper titled The Physics and Technology of Warp Propulsion by Bernd Schneider located here: https://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/treknology/warp.pdf on page 18. It is a higher resolution image of the exact same image already on Wikipedia only with legible text and the colors inverted. I wish to replace the existing wikipedia image with this one but there is no option to do so and attempts to download and reupload the image are being thwarted. How can I update this picture with a better quality one that can actually be read, as the current one is illegible and useless. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lehenbnw (talk • contribs) 22:51, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Lehenbnw: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. In addition, this particular image appears to be copyrighted by Michael Okuda or Paramount Pictures, so we would need their permission to host it here until their copyright expires.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:29, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Hi, Jeff, thanks for the quick response, however the Fair Use clause of Copyright law allows for the use of copyrighted material on the basis of education. Given that the context for the use of the image is education couldn't an argument be made that its use falls under Fair Use? I saw mention of the fact that files can be uploaded under the premise of Fair Use, but doing so directed me here where the rules once again stated that it was creative commons only, so how do I upload the image under fair use, since the article is educational and I simply wish to update the material that already exists on the page, just not in a quality that makes the material useful in any meaningful way. Thanks for your time! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lehenbnw (talk • contribs) 05:06, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
@Lehenbnw: We do not accept Fair Use. If you just want to make Fair Use of it on English Wikipedia, please see en:WP:F. The Fair Use of the first file en:File:Warptable.gif limited the file to 408 × 244 pixels (99,552 pixels, just short of 0.1 megapixels) per en:Wikipedia:Non-free content#Image resolution. You may, however, transcribe the text into the description of that first file.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:28, 2 July 2020 (UTC)

@Adelfrank: To answer your immediate question, in the "licensing" section, copy the same license as the original, in this case the license Cc-by-sa-4.0. You placed a GFD license, something that can't be done for a cropping of a work licensed CC-by-sa-4.0 only. (Also, did you do some research to make sure that the files of the original uploader are his own work? They may well be, but it may be useful to reasearch a little.) -- Asclepias (talk) 11:29, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Yes, it's better, but please remove the GFDL template you inserted upon upload, and remove the "self" bit before the CC license. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:49, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Why I can't properly crop File:黒 3 (7076018431).jpg? Neither my computer's crop software nor CropTool can crop the file: both gives exactly the same file size.廣九直通車 (talk) 10:09, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

Maybe you can explain in more detail what you are trying to do exactly and why you think you can't do it. For now, you cropped the right side of the image by 104 px (and reduced its weight by 3.02 MB), then you restored the original, then you cropped its right side by 97 px (and reduced its weight by 0.05 MB). Slicing a video

I recently shot a video clip I'd like to upload, but my hand was unsteady for the first four seconds or so, which I'd like to slice out. I tried using OpenShot, but it consistently fails when I try to save. Can anyone suggest some other tool, preferably free? 1. @Bhaskargoel: I assume this is about File:Swachhpro Logo.jpg.
  2. The file was removed on the basis that it was created as an advertisement. That seems to me to have been wrongly decided: a simple logo is not an advertisement. You could take this to Commons:Undeletion requests. On the other hand, I'm not aware that your company is significant enough to be in scope, and you'd need to make a case for that.
  3. The logo was a really low-resolution JPEG. Usually, that is not what we want. Compare File:Mobil_logo.svg (which uses SVG) or even File:Wikimedia Community Logo Grayscale.jpg, which uses a much higher-resolution JPEG.
  4. You claimed this logo as your "own work" and offered cc-by-sa-4.0 as a license. That means you are claiming:
    1. The logo is complex enough to merit copyright, and can't just be considered PD-ineligible.
    2. You personally designed the logo and own the copyright.
As for the first of those implicit claims, I don't know what country you are in, so I don't know the relevant threshold of originality, but it is not obvious that that is true. And on the second: our experience is that usually when people upload a company logo, they are usually not the designer. At the very least, that claim should go through the COM:OTRS process.
  5. If all of this is just about getting the logo into an article in the English-language Wikipedia, it might be easier to leave out Commons entirely and upload on the English-language Wikipedia using en:Template:Non-free logo. The English-language Wikipedia allows non-free use in these circumstances; Commons does not. For that purpose, your low-res JPEG would be fine.
  6. Conversely: you should not be writing an article about your own company on the English-language Wikipedia (though it's fine to provide a logo if someone has written an article independently). See the English-language Wikipedia policy on conflicts of interest. - Jmabel ! talk 14:47, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Screenshot of elected official on a Zoom call?

Hi all,

Is it acceptable to edit the Wikipedia article belonging to a publicly elected official in the United States to update the photo from an official campaign photo from 2016 to a screenshot of the official from a 2020 City Council meeting held over Zoom?

The Councilmember's physical appearance has changed significantly since 2016 – notably, his hair has grown past his shoulders after appearing close-cropped in the campaign photo. Hence, the photo is no longer an accurate reflection of a living person's image.

The uploader had an abuse filter that went off when I tried uploading the photo here, so apologies that I cannot post a preview. I would benefit from your guidance and an administrator's guidance before making any changes.

Many thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Greenpointer (talk • contribs) 13:39, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

If you want to use the file on English Wikipedia, please read WP:F, but you are unlikely to succeed in keeping it there if tha article already has a licensed photo. However, if an en:WP:RS picks up the story of the official's long hair and the article mentions that, the screenshot can illustrate that.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:59, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

inconsistency

Hi all,

Quick question, Commons:Copyright rules by territory/France says that Government works are not free except if published on the gouvernement.fr website. If so, use ) » (no time constraints are mentioned)

But, says that for the license to be used, the media must be « appearing on the official web page of the French Government between the end of March 2014 and September 2014. » so here with very clear (and kind of weird) time constraints.

Anybody knows which one is correct ? --ManuRoquette (talk) 19:20, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Both pages seem to say the same thing, but the text of the template seems more precise on the dates. (It links to the 25 March 2014 version for the starting date, although the CC license was already on the 8 March 2014 version at the web archive, but that probably doesn't make much difference. The more important date is when the license was removed.) -- Asclepias (talk) 20:11, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of two redirects

I want to rename two files:

However the redirects File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg and File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg have to be deleted first.Smiley.toerist (talk) 09:45, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

@Smiley.toerist: These file names look OK to me. Why you want to rename these files?廣九直通車 (talk) 10:42, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
I wrongly put all the pictures under Jingtong with a numbers going from 1 to 4. The first two pictures where not in Jingtong but in Shifen. It would nice if the numbers started from 1, but not essential. So we can leave it as it is. I will rename my files on my laptop so they match the Commons.Smiley.toerist (talk) 12:29, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
@Smiley.toerist: That's good. Just to explain a little more, such renaming, when not really necessary, can be confusing, because it would use a filename whose upload log relates to another image. It's not against the rules and it is possible to do it, but it can cause confusing situations when checking the histories of the files (in particular if a file gets deleted by mistake or otherwise). The earlier renaming of "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg" to "File:Shifen station 2014 1.jpg" already disconnected the upload log of this image (which remains at "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg") from this image's new filename "File:Shifen station 2014 1.jpg" (whose logs at "File:Shifen station 2014 1.jpg" do not include the upload log, still associated to the previous filename "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg"). Up to that point, the situation remains simple. But if, in addition to that, the filename "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg" would become used for another image, currently at "File:Jingtong station 2014 3.jpg", it gets more complex. The new situation then would be that the upload log of the image at "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg" would actually be at "File:Jingtong station 2014 3.jpg" while the upload log at "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg" would actually not be the upload log of the image at this filename "File:Jingtong station 2014 1.jpg" but still the upload log of the different image at "File:Shifen station 2014 1.jpg". Unless there's an important reason, it is better to avoid moving things around and mixing the logs. -- Asclepias (talk) 12:35, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

@Ruslan.
Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:14, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

He — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unterfigher Vladimir (talk • contribs) 06:20, 7 July 2020‎ (UTC)

Unterfigher Vladimir, I'll assume this concerns File:Heimdal™ Security company logo.png. Firstly, Wikimedia Commons is a store of free media. To have an image here, it must be released under a free license, which allows reuse, modification, etc. If you don't want to license your image under such terms, then you may be able to upload locally to some Wikipedias under fair use, but this would require you to have an article there already, and doesn't apply to all Wikipedias. If you just want to use the image on the English Wikipedia, then fair use is an option - once your draft is complete, make a request at en:wp:ffu.
If you are willing to freely license the image, there are two ways you can do this. Either mark it under an approved license on your website. If you can't do this, fill in the Commons:Wikimedia OTRS release generator, and email it to us from a corporate email address.

How to remove false copyright information from images?

Some of the images I have recently uploaded show "Juha Forsberg" as the copyright holder. This is apparently coming straight from the EXIF data. The copyright is false - I am not Juha Forsberg and Juha Forsberg has nothing to do with the images, they were taken by me. I bought the camera second-hand, and it had apparently previously belonged to Juha Forsberg, who forgot to remove his copyright name from the camera settings.

Is there anything I can do to remove the false copyright information? JIP (talk) 15:54, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

If you mean remove from the EXIF, it sounds like a similar question above at Commons:Help_desk#I_would_like_to_remove_longitude_and_latitude_in_my_file, where tools are suggested. Also, I believe you but, as Juha Forsberg is a known photographer and uses this type of camera, in a case like this, if possible, it may be nice to have a word from him that he sold it. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:46, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
I did not buy the camera directly from Juha Forsberg, instead from a store that he sold it to as a used camera. So Juha Forsberg probably doesn't know that I bought his camera. JIP (talk) 18:44, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

Ajay Yedke. What you have done is created a user page at en:User:Ajay Yedke. These pages aren't encyclopedia articles, are so, are not indexed by search engines like Google.
You had also previously created en:Draft:Ajay Yedke, which was declined. To create an article in the encyclopedia, so that it will be listed on search engines, you should first read and follow en:Wikipedia:Autobiography, before addressing the concerns raised on the draft. If you want more information about this, you can ask at the en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Articles for creation/Help desk.

  • @RealMBear: It is very unlikely that the cover in question would be eligible to appear here on Wikimedia Commons. Unless we are talking, e.g., something a century old, or if the cover is just typography with no pictures, it is almost certainly copyrighted. Wikimedia Commons accepts only images that are either in the public domain or are free-licensed in accord with Commons:Project scope#Must be freely licensed or public domain.
  • If by "the author's Wiki page" you mean something on the English-language Wikipedia, then they make certain provisions for non-free use, but that has nothing to do with Commons. You would have to upload that image on the English-language Wikipedia, not on Commons. See en:File:DaVinciCode.jpg for a typical example of how this is done. - Jmabel ! talk 03:11, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
@RealMBear: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:34, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

How to edit and crop a preexisting image on commons

Hello! I was wondering if I was able to use Paint.NET to crop an image to get rid of some extra unneeded coloring on the sides. The picture is titled File:Connie Allen.jpg How do I overwrite it once I properly optimize the photo? Am I even allowed to do this? Thank you, Stapmoshun (talk) 18:40, 8 July 2020 (UTC)

You can use any raster editor to crop the image, but, please, do not overwrite it. Instead you should upload the cropped image under a different name. Ruslik (talk) 20:28, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
Before you put too much effort on this file, you should probably check that is is really free. The CC license seems dubious, but I can't access the source which requires a registration. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:57, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
@Stapmoshun, Asclepias, and Jmabel, and Ruslik: I found too many other instances of it on the web, and tagged it as such.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:02, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Selfie

My name is Lolzsmite1018, and I have a question regarding selfies on Wikipedia.

If I had my own Wikipedia article and it had no picture of me in the Infobox, could I take a picture of myself on my laptop webcam and put it on there? Also, if I had met a famous person whose Wikipedia article had no photo of them in the article's Infobox and took a selfie with them, could I upload it onto the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lolzsmite1018 (talk • contribs) 13:45, 9 July 2020‎ (UTC)

@Lolzsmite1018: Hi, and welcome. Yes to both, but you should crop yourself out of the 2nd picture for purposes of that article. See also COM:SELFIE and en:WP:AUTO.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:10, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Adjusting image size / crop

Is it possible to manipulate images so that when they are displayed on a Wikipedia page with a specified image width, they present as the same size? I had wanted to display this image and this image side by side on a page on the English Wikipedia (i.e. using the multiple image template), but one shows as longer (i.e. takes up more page length) than the other. What is the best way of correcting this? PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 18:13, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

@PaleCloudedWhite:
If you want to adjust to the same height and if you don't mind too much about having different widths, it can be done with this template. For example:
If you want the two images to be displayed in exactly the same size, there may be a way to crop the display of one, but you would have to look in help pages about detailed possibilities for the display of images. Maybe mw:Help:Images.
-- Asclepias (talk) 19:46, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. Having different widths is preferable to different heights, so that's an improvement. I guess the alternative is to crop one of the files for re-upload, though this would populate Category:Chrome Hill with 2 similar images. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 20:04, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
@PaleCloudedWhite: I gave the above example with the template because you mentioned it in your question, but I forgot to mention that the template is not necessary. You can just use a simple image height parameter. For example:

Wiki Commons App "nearby places"

Hi guys

I post 2 types of photos to wikicommons photos using the app. First is photos I take of places I like and think they may be useful to others. Second nearby places that I am NOT interested in but wiki says it needs a photo.

In this latter case the blue upside down teardrop (map marker) turns to green and only shows if the "needs photo" box is unchecked. It has been very rewarding to do this. But suddenly it has stopped working. My most recent photos (since about the beginning of June) do not alter the "needs photo" status and the teardrop remains blue.

I like doing these photos, a new hobby, but not so much that I have to take time and in some cases petrol money to photograph a milepost or a bridge for no real reason and doesn't serve its intended purpose.

Example : https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Milepost_on_A493.jpg#mw-jump-to-license

Can anyone explain what may have happened. Should I stop doing these types of photos. Should I just go back to posting photos that are useful but not linked to a specific wiki requirement. Or am I doing something wrong in which case please advise.

Many thanks Peter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter Glyn (talk • contribs) 12:45, 6 July 2020‎ (UTC)

posting photos

Hello,

My username is AcroniusZ

I take pictures of municipal monuments. Almost always they were also placed on wikiMedia. category Municipal Monuments. But the photos of Rotterdam Delfshaven, Hillegersberg, Charlois and Centrum have not been placed. And neither do the photos of the Fevopolder after that. Is there a reason for that. And now a photo has been placed at Rotterdam Delfshaven that is incorrect: The photo of 1e Middellandstraat 115-117 is from Zoutziedersstraat 18-20 and there is no photo.

With kind regards A van der ZweepAcroniusZ (talk) 10:30, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

@AcroniusZ: Hi, and welcome. Which specific photos are you writing about? Please check your uploading procedures to find where the category went missing.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:05, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello Jeff, How do I check my upload procedure? AcroniusZAcroniusZ (talk) 19:12, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

@AcroniusZ: I presume you have certain steps that you follow in your procedure for uploading (getting a file from your camera onto our servers). Please check those steps to make sure the appropriate categories are added.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:24, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

I follow the correct procedure until the link: Producing. The same every time. And suddenly it is no longer placed near and after Rotterdam. Nothing anymore. And uploading the photos again is not possible because then it recognizes that it has already been done. I'm going to upload a few today, from a different place, see what that does. Mvg AcroniusZ 77.251.74.80 09:43, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

@AcroniusZ: I for one still can't make sense of what you are saying here. In particular, I have no idea what you mean by "suddenly it is no longer placed near and after Rotterdam." Still: if the photos are uploading, then presumably they each end up on their respective file page here (you can find them via Special:MyUploads). You can edit those file pages exactly the same way you are editing this page right now. - Jmabel ! talk 14:41, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

COI and basic editing

I'm the executive secretary for the person whose page I would like to edit. Is our relationship considered COI? In addition, can I completely re-do his bio based to reflect the version on our website? It is not inflammatory or biased; just correct.

We have one sourced article that is misleading: the writer makes an assumption that is opinion rather than fact. Can it be removed? We also need to remove a source that is no longer valid. (It concerns a television program that no longer airs.)

Thank you.

@MaritaRobbins: Yes, you would be considered to have a COI. You shouldn't make any changes to that article beyond reverting obvious vandalism or doing simple fixes like grammar - instead, request changes on the article's Talk Page so other editors can review them and implement them. You should be able to find all the info you need at en:WP:COI. – BMacZero (🗩) 19:15, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
@MaritaRobbins: You may or may not be aware: you've asked this question on Wikimedia Commons, not the English-language Wikipedia.
You can raise your issues on the talk/discussion page of the article in question; if that doesn't get attention and/or if you consider the article to be actually misleading, you can take that up at en:Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard. - Jmabel ! talk 03:12, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

How to view old source text when there is mediainfo

Is there a way to view the source text/edit an old version of a file after there has been mediainfo added, such as a caption? I tried to go back to a previous version of one of my photos, but one of the intermediate diffs was the addition of a caption. I can view the specific revision from the history page, but when I click on the edit tab, where the apparent link has the text &action=edit&oldid=N, the actual link becomes &action=mcrrestore&restore=N. Instead of an edit window to edit the source text, the page is just a diff with no editable option. Is there some option somewhere or another way to actually get to the previous text? kennethaw88talk 15:14, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

@Kennethaw88: The old wikitext is still available through the MediaWiki API, so you can do something like this in the API Sandbox: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ApiSandbox#action=query&format=json&prop=revisions&revids=418869033&rvprop=content&rvslots=main. This is pretty horrible, though, and requires you to translate the result back from JSON. The change that removed the ability to see old wikitext was discussed at Commons talk:Structured data/Archive 2018#Necessary changes to how viewing and using old file page revisions functions, where RIsler (WMF) said, The ultimate point is that there *will* be a way to view the Wikitext of a past revision, we just haven't settled on the best way to do that yet. I presume WMF are still busy settling. --bjh21 (talk) 15:52, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

I edited by removing one word from an Image Title on a Wikipedia page and now the text is broken although it appears correctly in Edit mode & on the Wikimedia page - how do i fix???

Here is the file: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntington_family#/media/File:%22Diana%22_by_Anna_Hyatt_Huntington.jpg

It is leading with the file name and not the description. I do not know how to get it to display correctly. It should read:

"Diana" sculpted by Anna Hyatt Huntington at The Huntington Library, Museum and Botanical Gardens. Photographed in Virtual Reality 360 by cousin Jeris Huntington and entitled, "Diana: Breaking the Glass Ceiling" (2019) [I corrected by removing Through from this title] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jjjheart (talk • contribs) 12:18, 11 July 2020‎ (UTC)

@Jjjheart: In this edit, the problem was not the word you removed, it was the string of text you added in a last parameter at the end. When one of your edits breaks something, the simplest thing to do is to revert your own edit. You can then try something else. But please use the preview button until the result is correct before you publish a new version of the article. However, another user removed this image from the article, which may mean that the user disagreed with its presence in the article. You may want to discuss with that user. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:38, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

Creator template not in category

I'm not seeing Creator:James Wehn in Category:James Wehn. I purged the cache of the latter, still not there. Is this just some deeper caching problem or is something actually wrong with how this is set up (maybe something in Wikidata)? - Jmabel ! talk 20:49, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

I'm sure that works, but isn't that now supposed to be unnecessary when both are linked to a Wikidata item? Before your edit, the category showed on the page Creator:James Wehn, but Creator:James Wehn was not visible on the page Category:James Wehn. Or did I misunderstand how this is supposed to work? I've only made a handful of Creator pages. - Jmabel ! talk 06:13, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel and 廣九直通車: Jmabel is correct, the "Creator" page is supposed to automatically be placed in the appropriate Category. Adding the category manually should not be necessary, and in fact causes an issue because it automatically places any page that transcludes the Creator in that category, preventing them from being sorted into subcategories (though you could further work around this with <noinclude> tags).
There is an issue that comes up sometimes where pages are in a category but do not show up on the category page - I think it happens when the category is added to a template without changing the transcluding page. IIRC this usually sorts itself out in a matter of hours. I removed the manual category and this page appears fine now. – BMacZero (🗩) 16:37, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Remove/split mirrored update of Da Vinci drawing

Regarding the file: Coition_of_a_Hemisected_Man_and_Woman.jpg: The original upload of this file was depicting the drawing as it looks, with Da Vincis text mirrored, the way he famously wrote texts. A new mirrored version of the drawing have been made overwriting the original, with the comment "image flipped, now we can read what it says". I really think this version skould be undone. If a mirorred version is needed it should be a new file, named "Mirrored version of Da Vincis Coition of a Hemisected Man and Woman.jpg" or similar. License from another one

I don't understand the process here. I have an author that want to give the cc-by or cc-by-sa license for his copyrighted pictures, so I may put it into wikipedia. But here I found only ways to license my own work or upload work that already has a free license. How to add a license from someone else to an upload? Form? Mail? Oath? … ? Markus Prokott (talk) 08:03, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Markus Prokott: there are two ways of doing this. If the images are already published elsewhere, you can ask the photographer to mark the images with the license where they are published, and then upload as normal, giving the image location as the source.
Otherwise, you can upload the images, tagging them with OTRS pending, and ask the photographer to fill in Commons:Wikimedia OTRS release generator and email it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org.

@REDMAN 2019: Hi, and welcome. Usually when someone uploads a logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. One could upload the full-size original of it, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so the copyright holder may need to publish the logo and their permission for it on their website or social media or send them via OTRS with a copy to you.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:00, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

uploading pictures taken from instagram of a leaked car

A user on instagram has uploaded 2 pictures of a car that has yet to be unveiled, the 2 pictures are most likely property of the car manufacturer but no one has claimed rights to the picture. Uploading photo of 1985 software packaging

Can I upload a photo which I took myself of the "shrink-wrap" packaging of an 1985 software product? Synchronist (talk) 19:15, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

  • If you are asking whether we would host that on Commons, the answer is almost certainly no, unless you somehow hold the copyright to that 1985 packaging. You don't mention what country; the only major country where it is even imaginable that such a thing at that date was not copyrighted is the U.S., which did not yet have a law then making copyright upon creation the default, and even then I think we'd have to have evidence that the packaging did not make a copyright claim anywhere, plus a good search of the copyright register to show that they did not remedy that by registering a copyright within five years. That would be unusual for a software product. As I say, almost certainly no. - Jmabel ! talk 00:50, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
Jmabel, I appreciate your efforts as a Wikipedia volunteer in addressing my question, and I appreciate your quick reply, and I realize further that you not in a position to get into a long-winded discussion about copyright law -- but maybe you can dispatch my curiosity on this question in respect to a similar case, and without too much effort: would it be permissible to upload a photo of a car which included a chrome version of the manufacturer's logo on the side of the vehicle? (And you can see where I am going with this.) Synchronist (talk) 02:25, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
@Synchronist: Typically, yes. The car itself is absolutely unproblematic: it is a functional object, not a piece of packaging. And, if it was just a picture of the logo, typically automobile company logos are either old enough to have fallen out of copyright or are simple enough to be ineligible for copyright (they remain protected as trademarks, but that's a completely different body of intellectual property law, and for Commons purpose the Trademark template should be enough to cover that). I'm sure there are some exceptions: I imagine that there are some cars where a photo that was mainly of a chrome logo would violate someone's copyright.
If the computer software box is, for example, a plain blue box with lettering, no photos, no screenshot, etc., then it would be permissible because it was never eligible for copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 15:42, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

  • No, you cannot, at least not on Commons. You do not own the copyrights to his paintings, so you cannot release those rights. If the artist wants to release them, great! They can either post the relevant photographs of their work with a license specified on a web site clearly under their control (most artists these days have a web presence) or they can go through the process described at COM:OTRS.
  • The English-language Wikipedia (but not Commons) makes some allowance for non-free use of low-resolution images. See en:File:Warhol-Campbell Soup-1-screenprint-1968.jpg for a typical example of how this is done. - Jmabel ! talk 16:26, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Please advise me

Hello,

Sorry to bother you, but I don't feel that I can continue here on the Commons with A. Savin almost daily reverting me over petty issues. There is no one else that reverts me, except one editor since I stopped editing a couple of days ago after I freaked out. I have to reconstruct categories A.Savin deletes.

I tried the suggestion by AFBorchert (A) to communicate with him by leaving a note on the discussion page of the image at issue recently, but A.Savin deleted the image discussion page so it was gone when I went to refer to it. It was about a building that A.Savin insisted was ruined and reverted me but it was designated by the Pakistan authority, Sindh Building Control Authority, as "dilapidated". (That was the info A.Savin deleted.) He stalks me and seeks ways to make me uncomfortable editing at all on the Commons.

Should I just stop editing on the Commons? Or just not edit at all on the subjects of Sri Lanka, Pakistan or any other A.Savin decides to exclude me from? A few days ago I renamed something like 150 photos and he did not revert me on those but I can not do that every day.

I left a note on the page of AFBorchert; he had suggested leaving notes on image discussion pages (as I did as described above) but he did not answer me so I cannot get help from other admins who give me advice and seem to offer help.

I have not edited since and will not while I am being stalked by A.Savin. I've not had a problem with any other editor. (Lately, I have been editing peaceably with an IP who has been doing a terrific job categorizing Pakistan images with no problems.) I have about 430,000 edits of which 12,000 have been deleted. Is this a high number? Am I not worthy of editing here? Thank you for your time. Kalbbes (talk) 17:18, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Please, provide links to the renames or edits that have been reverted. Ruslik (talk) 21:00, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
@Kalbbes: I can't tell what exactly you are asking for here. (1) If you are simply saying that you intend to leave Commons, sorry to see you go but that's not a matter for the help desk. (2) If you are asking for review on specific disputes, focused on content rather than personalities, yes this is a reasonable venue, but please post relevant links (and please keep it to a few at a time). (3) And if it is about User:A.Savin's conduct toward you, bring it to COM:AN/U, not the help desk, but expect that, inevitably, your edits will be as much under review as A.Savin's, because that is simply how dispute resolution works. - Jmabel ! talk 00:49, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

  • You need to be logged in to upload images. In the unlikely event that you really mean in Wikipedia in some language, not in Wikimedia Commons (the site you are on, and where images can, among other things, be shared across the various language Wikipedias), you would need to upload within the specific Wikipedia in question. - Jmabel ! talk 00:55, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Best way to change file type (to .png) of a map I uploaded as .jpg

Hello helpful experts,

I have just made some changes to a file that I had previously uploaded, here. It is a map. When uploading the new version, I realised I had created its predecessor as a .jpg.

Could you please tell me the best way to replace the .jpg with my new .png file? I have file mover access; could I re-name the page to [name].png even though it contains a .jpg image, then upload the .png version? Or upload the .png to a new page and ask for the .jpg page to be deleted? Or ....? Advice appreciated. Cheers, SCHolar44 (talk) 08:47, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello there. File formats are not interchangeable so you can't move the page. You will have to upload a new PNG file. The old JPG may then stay as it is. De728631 (talk) 08:53, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
@SCHolar44: Hi, and welcome. The png version will look fuzzy when scaled down, so please convert it to jpg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:18, 19 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your advice, gentlemen. Two questions occur to me, on which I'd appreciate your opinions:
De728631: I understood that maps are preferred in .png format (and that's what prompted me to "correct" the file format when I need to amend the map). So wouldn't it be better to mark the .jpg version for deletion?
Jeff: By "The png version will look fuzzy when scaled down", do you mean all .png files, or just this map? Currently I have both file types available for the amended map, derived separately from my page layout application; the .jpg is 800 kB and the .png is 1.6 MB, as I'd expect, and both display identically on screen at very large magnification.
With many thanks for expanding my knowledge of this subject -- Simon SCHolar44 (talk) 05:55, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
You should try to compare them at lower resolution, not higher, basically at thumbnail size. When scaled down png images may look blurry if not scaled down correctly. Ruslik (talk) 06:43, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
@SCHolar44: I mean that any png file on any MediaWiki installation will look fuzzy when scaled down due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:53, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

How to upload a Non-free magazine cover link to a article

Hi, I'm trying to upload a few Magazine Covers to illustrate the Article I wrote. The article is about a famous Australian surfer and he was cover of those magazines. According to this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Non-free_magazine_cover it was possible to do so, but all the images I uploaded were deleted, even following the template.

What am I doing wrong? How can I make it possible?

  • @Strykerman5000: Could you clarify what you mean by "a montage of edits"? If you just mean a sequence of diffs, usually you would just provide links to those diffs rather than take a screenshot and upload that; but if you mean something else, I'm not sure what it would be. - Jmabel ! talk 00:41, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
@Strykerman5000: Hi, and welcome. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. Are the Flickr option on Upload wizard or Flickr2Commons working?

Hi, I need to upload some image from Flickr because of WLM, in order to make lists more clear, and last week I tried. I found a way, but I would really like to use some better tool that I am sure worked in the past. It looks to me the Flickr button on Upload wizard is not working (it remains grayish). is it just me? I have also problem with Flickr2Commons, I got 404 error. Any feedback?--Alexmar983 (talk) 00:37, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

(BTW if you want to know which file I was trying to upload, it's this one)

Jmabel The 404 error is from another link (the one on the OAuth interface), but it does not matter, because that link I can open and I can also open the upload on the wizard. They just don't work. Do they work with you?--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:37, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Getting 'your media maybe deleted' warning. How to prevent it from getting deleted?

I got your media maybe deleted warning on File:Akraina exhibition.jpg
How can I prevent it from getting deleted. I have tried adding more detail to the description of the file but still the warning is showing. What should I do now?--Hackasaur (talk) 15:53, 13 July 2020 (UTC)

Convenience link: File:Akraina exhibition.jpg - Jmabel ! talk 16:13, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
User:SCP-2000 tagged this as having now source, but Hackasaur said (I'll presume accurately) that it is their own work. @SCP-2000: can you explain the issue here?
@Hackasaur: Date and description seem to contradict each other: you say the exhibit was in 2013, but the image is dated yesterday, which seems impossible. Also, your categories are ridiculously high-level: you should be using the most specific categories that exist. At the very least, things like Category:Male painters from India, Category:New Delhi, but probably even more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 16:21, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I selected 'own work' at the time of upload then edited the description later that's why the issue. I'll fix the source problem now--Hackasaur (talk) 16:30, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
'Own work' still shouldn't have affected the date. - Jmabel ! talk 00:36, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
@Hackasaur: You now give source as "The artist A.K. Raina granted me permission to share this". That is not a source. Are you saying, by changing "own work" to this that you are not the photographer? If someone else too the photo, who exactly, and where is it documented that they granted a license? - Jmabel ! talk 00:40, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel and SCP-2000: I have made the necessary changes to the file. But the warning is still showing: Unless this issue is resolved, the file will be deleted seven days after this tag was added what should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hackasaur (talk • contribs) 10:25, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
@Hackasaur: I removed the No source since tag, but we still need A.K. Raina's permission for his paintings behind him, unless someone does a gaussian blur on them.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:10, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I don't understand--do I have to prove that it is actually A.K. Raina's paintings in the image or prove that I have the permission to show A.K. Raina's paintings?. And can you give an example of how I can prove this?--Hackasaur (talk) 12:05, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
We have to either Gaussian-blur out the paintings, or prove A.K. Raina's permission to license this work which is derivative work from those paintings. Assuming the latter is what you want to do, there are two ways to do that. (1) The license can be stated on a site or social media account clearly under A.K. Raina's control (you can provide him with the image, he or his representative can post it with an indication that he agrees to the license, you can cite the relevant URL in the "permission" section of Information) or (2) he or his representative can go through the process outlined at COM:OTRS. The former is always quicker and often easier, if he's agreeable, but in his case it's not obvious to me that he has such a web presence: if I search for him I find pages run by galleries and other organizations, not a site that is clearly his own.
Just to be clear: A.K. Raina is certainly a significant artist, we would certainly like to work out how to make this go. I'm available to help work this through, but I'm not a member of the OTRS team, so if you go the latter route there is only so much I can do. - Jmabel ! talk 14:44, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

@Yogibr10: Hi, and welcome. Have you read COM:L?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:41, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
@Yogibr10: If you use a camera to take a photograph of a person or a thing, then you are the creator of the photograph.
If you copy a photograph from the internet, or scan a photograph in a book or magazine, then you are not the creator of the photograph.
There can be some issues with photographs of works of art. The person who took the photograph has some rights, but the person who created the work of art that was photographed also has rights. Toddy1 (talk) 14:27, 14 July 2020 (UTC)
Most images you find on the Internet are copyrighted, not free-licensed, and not suitable for Commons. Please, unless you have a fair sense of copyright law and licenses, do not upload images you "find on the Internet". - Jmabel ! talk 14:49, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Can I upload CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 image?

I want to add this image to accompany a new article I am writing, the image has Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) and says it can be shared freely in any medium with credit.

Forgive me if this is something obvious - I'm new round here --MuseumKitty (talk) 14:05, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

@MuseumKitty: That's actually a complicated question!
  1. We cannot accept a CC-BY-NC-SA license, because "NC" means non-commercial, and we can't use that.
  2. On the other hand: how can the site that posted that possibly claim to own a copyright on it and grant a license? It's a picture from circa 1860, so it is certainly at least PD-old-assumed; it is possible that you can work out a grounds for a more specific PD license, especially if the photographer is known. - Jmabel ! talk 14:56, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Can I crop an image and circle part of it, then upload the new version?

Hello! I would like to add a portion of this file to a Wikipedia article: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:The_Negro_Motorist_Green_Book_1940.pdf&page=39

Ideally, I want to use the top half of page 39 and I want to circle the part that is relevant to the article. May I do this in an image editing program and then upload the new file to the Wikimedia Commons?

If this is not an appropriate use of the Commons, is there a way that I could use the existing file and show page 39? When I try to use this file on Wikipedia, it displays the first page of the PDF. If necessary, I can use this, but I think the cropped, circled version would be more valuable for the article if that is an option. Thank you very much for your help.

Video upload problem

I'm using https://video2commons.toolforge.org/ to upload and convert an .mov file from the hard drive of my laptop. After the usual long, slow process of the actual upload, I fill out the info about the file, tell it to add the task, and get the message, "An exception occurred: DownloadError: ERROR: Unable to download webpage: HTTP Error 308: Permanent Redirect (caused by HTTPError()); please report this issue on https://yt-dl.org/bug . Make sure you are using the latest version; see https://yt-dl.org/update on how to update. Be sure to call youtube-dl with the --verbose flag and include its complete output." This makes no sense to me. nothing I was doing involved YouTube. To the best of my recollection, I have never in my life uploaded a video to YouTube. Does video2commons itself use YouTube as part of its process? And what (if anything) can I do about my upload?

If it is useful, I can upload the video in question to Vimeo. - Jmabel ! talk 03:00, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

I'm not familiar with this and I'm only guessing. You say that you tried to upload a file from the hard drive of your laptop, not from a website. But the description of the function of video2commons is "video2commons is a tool to upload videos from a url to Wikimedia Commons". That would seem to explain the situation. For the mention of youtube, maybe it's the default setting, or the default wording of the error message, when another url is not used. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:10, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Also, any raster image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload svg or jpg versions, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:09, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

I have found a German page from a certain place in the woods of my region. It is asked for fotos. I went there and made some fotos, but I do not understand, how I can put them in the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nanwen1302 (talk • contribs) 16:19, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

@Nanwen1302: First step is to upload them: according to the logs, you've never uploaded any photos here.

Did I get licensing correct?

I wrote the SVG code for File:LGBTQ+ rainbow flag Quasar "Progress" variant.svg based on this Creative Commons image. I referenced Quasar's guidelines for use.

Did I get the licensing right, based on the original? I did write the .svg code (XML) myself. = paul2520 (talk) 22:21, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

@Paul2520: Unfortunately the Share-Alike portion of the CC-BY-NC-SA 4.0 license requires that you license your derivative work under the same license as the original or a compatible one. Essentially, you can't get rid of the Non-Commerical restriction by creating your own derivative, and non-commercial restrictions are not allow on Commons. This file will probably have to be deleted. – BMacZero (🗩) 23:14, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Language

Hi greetings, why this page (Special:SupportedLanguages) doesn't show all languages in commons? Please help. Regards.--Path slopu (Talk) 12:14, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Unlike Wikipedia where one encyclopedia is dedicated to a single language, Commons is one central, multilingual project for all other Wikimedia projects with English as the main common language. That means we need to translate each relevant page like guidelines, help sites, copyright rules and such into many different languages from the main document which was written in English. However, this requires competent and active translators - but there are only very few of them. Apart from that, discussion pages like Help desk or the administrative noticeboards can be accessed by user writing any language. Responses may be slow though (and sometimes inaccurate) depending on the original language of the request. De728631 (talk) 18:02, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi All,

Can someone please assist me in renaming this page to either just AXIS or AXIS Manchester? I do not currently have the ability to do this through my own account and am very lost with the instructions.

Axis Tower is incorrect and not the name of the building.

i don't know where to submit an article

I'm struggling to find out where/how to submit an article on reconciliation education. Can you please point me in the right direction. I'm on whatsapp on +61 437725539

Reconciliation Education is a teaching-learning approach for interrupting prejudices and developing more positive intergroup perspectives. The teacher initially identifies prejudices prevalent in society toward another group of people that may have shaped students’ perspectives, such as seeing ‘them’ as unintelligent, unkind, unskilled and unaccomplished. Reconciliation Education centres positive messaging about the ‘other’ group of people that is antonymous to the prejudices in wider society commonly held toward the group, and raising learners’ awareness by telling the truth about their past and present experiences, cultures and accomplishments. Students in turn may attempt to take the other group’s perspectives by imagining their experiences and empathising with them. Resultantly, divisions between ‘us’ and ‘them’ may be closed as students see that many of them are intelligent, kind, skilled and accomplished, and assumptions about them and other groups of people shouldn’t be made. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr Adam Heaton (talk • contribs) 06:54, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@Dr Adam Heaton: Wikimedia Commons does not accept any articles but Wikipedia does. Go to Wikipedia and go to the Article Wizard where you'll have to enter the name of your article. Enter the name. Then start writing it! Once finished click Publish Changes and if there is, click the Submit Article for Review on the template in the article which will then nominate your article for reviewing. --Red-back spider (talk) 07:57, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

@YugoslavPower: You have successfully reverted File:Geographical distribution of license plate codes in Yugoslavia.png several times. The problem here is that your Web browser has remembered ("cached") the old version, and it doesn't know to ask for the new one from Commons. You can force most Web browsers to re-fetch the whole page somehow. Try holding down the Shift or Control keys while clicking the reload button. --bjh21 (talk) 20:04, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Contributing my own written work to Wikipedia in a non-controversial way.

I would like to contribute some information on the ancient "religious" aspect of tattooing that may not be represented or understood from Biblical translations. It is not going to be pro-religion, but rather explain the reason for the ancient taboo of tattooing in a health related way. The purpose of what has become named the "Bible" was actually a group of works with the purpose to teach an ancient "way of living" rather than cause the creation of man-made religions that now seem to cause division. I am hopeful that what I contribute in print can be unifying to all because when you remove the religion from it, these things become common sense. Currently we have so much division that we fail to see that there are common goals that need to be reached. I also would like to contribute some ecological information to clarify misunderstandings of ancient Biblical writings which I hope will bridge the gap among people with differing methods, some unfortunately filled with earth-damaging error, but still aimed at achieving the common ecological goal of saving our planet. Again, common sense will hopefully prevail and finally, just maybe, we can work together to the planet's benefit and to our own. There is much work to be done, and this pandemic brings it to the forefront.

I joined Wikipedia a long time ago, and rather enjoy using it. And being primarily a fiber artist and working more-so with my hands than being hands-on computer savvy, I am failing to find information on how or where to start in my goal to contribute. I could not even find the page where I wanted to change my password! Could you possibly help me find the starting page for contributing and where I can change my password. Thank you.

Weird question I hope we can resolve

Hello,

I am the Director of Libraries at the Center for Inquiry in Amherst, NY. As such, I want to post photos that I have in our archives that we would allow anyone to use on Wikipedia (and elsewhere) with attribution, or images that we own (including items from The Truth Seeker, Skeptical Inquirer, Free Inquiry, and the Center for Inquiry. Again, We Own Them, we own distribution, creative and all rights to them). Only things that fit this criteria will be posted in my account here. In the past, items I have wanted to be freely distributed, covers of our mags, photos that appeared in our magazines (that we want distributed and used), and yet these items are constantly deleted. What do we need to do to allow them to be utilized here?

Thank you.

Timothy Binga, Director, Center for Inquiry Libraries TBinga@centerforinquiry.org — Preceding unsigned comment added by TBinga (talk • contribs) 18:13, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

  • @TBinga: Go through the process described at COM:OTRS to demonstrate that you are who you say you are. They'll generate an OTRS ticket number; once that is established you (or someone else can create a template) that can be used on materials you upload on this basis so it is clear that the licenses offered for these materials are, indeed, offered by the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 21:03, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Deal Warrior

Hello, I have found a few images on britishmuseum.org that would be a great addition to the Deal Warrior article. • @MagnusCodex: Probably not.
  • By "the Deal Warrior article" I presume you mean Deal Warrior in the English-language Wikipedia. If these are photos of three-dimensional artifacts, you could use those photos only if they are in the public domain or free-licensed. Since the British Museum is usually rather tight with copyrights, I would doubt that is at all likely. - Jmabel ! talk 21:11, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

Uploading images as an organisation

Hello,

Is there a way that an organisation could upload images they have the copyright for, or would they have to be uploaded by an individual representing the organisation?

Thanks very much! CáitChrainn (talk) 22:20, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

  • @CáitChrainn: All accounts have to be individuals, so there is no way for an organization to perform an upload.
  • An organization can place their images somewhere on their own website or one clearly under their control, indicate the appropriate licenses, and notify pretty much anyone here (including by having someone put a notice on this page) at which point any person in or out of the organization can perform the relevant uploads to Commons. If there are more than, say, a few dozen photos involved, that should certainly be accomplished with a bot. - Jmabel ! talk 00:00, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Want to upload image surely in Public Domain (1904), but no photographer known

Greetings, first a little bit of background: I have been searching for a picture to go with an article I am improving on the English Wikipedia, and found one. The original location is here: http://anno.onb.ac.at/cgi-content/anno?aid=wrb&datum=19040713&seite=10&zoom=33 (I want to use the top-right image)

There is already a strong indication that this picture would be in the Public Domain because the newspaper was published in 1904, which would qualify for the US. However, I made absolutely sure it is fine also in its country of origin, Austria. And indeed, according to the local copyright law it is: https://www.ris.bka.gv.at/GeltendeFassung.wxe?Abfrage=Bundesnormen&Gesetzesnummer=10001848 (relevant part is § 74, 6 - which in German states that the maximum copyright duration would be 2*50=100 years, which has expired as well.)

Additionally, the library which has digitized it has explicitly waved any copyright claims of its own: https://www.onb.ac.at/nutzung (again in German)

So, basically I am 99.9% sure that this image is allowed on Commons (feel free to chastise me if I am wrong).

However now to the actual question: The upload wizard prompts me to write an author name - and I do not know the original photographer!

I can't find any statement about it in the newspaper itself, and the library hosting the pic has no information either. Given that this is from 1904, I highly doubt I will be able to identify the photographer now. So, what do I do? Write the name of the newspaper instead? Insight appreciated :) LordPeterII (talk) 13:58, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

@LordPeterII: , what happens if you fill in N.A.? :-) Lotje (talk) 14:02, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
@LordPeterII: I think you can enter Unknown or Unknown photographer to get a properly-translated text. Note that the 50-year copyright for photographs (Lichtbilde) doesn't apply when they're works of photographic art (Lichtbildwerke, § 3). I suspect your picture may be close to the boundary. Curiously, I can't find a template for Lictbilde in German or Austrian law, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. --bjh21 (talk) 14:18, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks folks, turns out I didn't look close enough and the author is noted, but I shall keep that in mind for the future. Also, good call on the Lichtbildwerk distinction (which would mean author's death date +70 years), didn't dig deep enough it seems. Still, I do find it highly unlikely that copyright would be contested for such an image, which is already available digitized by a National Library. There are actually instances of this image being used on other sites (e.g. here: https://ww1.habsburger.net/en/chapters/league-austrian-womens-associations-and-end-peace-activities), and none of them credits the original photographer, and instead wrongfully credit the National Library which expressly does not claim copyright. Also, now that the author is known (Josef Bopiel), I searched for him and could find no entry at all in Google. All in all, I find it highly unlikely that anyone would contest copyright. Unless someone explicitly forbids me from uploading, I would be willing to take that chance. --LordPeterII (talk) 16:30, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
Update - I also just found out that whole swathes of this newspaper have already been added to Commons until as late as 1936 editions, they even have their own category (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wiener_Bilder). So, it seems it is generally accepted that this newspaper qualifies for Commons. Thanks again for the insights; I think I have a better picture of Commons now :) --LordPeterII (talk) 16:38, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
Well, what is written below the photo? Josef Bopiel ? -- Asclepias (talk) 15:57, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
Oh, thanks! Indeed it is; I didn't realize you could zoom in, and on default it was not legible. Well that solves that question! --LordPeterII (talk) 16:30, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Uploading a cropped version of an image

This image here depicts an old bottle of liquor. Notice that over two thirds of the image is pretty much empty space, the actual bottle takes up less than a third. I'd like to upload a cropped version of this, but I'm not sure how to do it.

  • @Donawitz88: This would be a lot easier to answer if you would (1) link the article in question and (2) link a page (presumably somewhere in the Internet outside of Wikimedia projects) that shows the logo you are talking about. - Jmabel ! talk 04:05, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Hackers other than you at wiki

I've had such trouble with users who think it's their right to invade my privacy. I don't know who some of them are or if they are friend or foe. I welcome wikipedia's advice and I don't have a problem with you but if you could please at least hint around at whom can be trusted , I'd appreciate it so much. Thank you so much for your help in the process of getting a job and your computer via email and the other people who are going to be in charge of my favorite music and get them out of my way to get a better understanding about what they want me to do. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2607:FCC8:F246:6700:701C:6124:D033:AFAB (talk) 23:01, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

  1. I have little idea what you are talking about since you make an accusation against unnamed "users".
  2. This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons, and neither of the two is the sort of organization that can give advice as an organization. The people posting here are individual volunteers and contributors. In certain contexts those of us who are administrators speak on behalf of group consensus, but not in giving advice.
  3. One would hope that administrators can be trusted, though I'm sure a few people would contest that. If you have a question to ask confidentially, you can contact the smaller group at OTRS who are allowed to carry on confidential correspondence. They can be reached at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org; please be direct and to the point when writing them (they are very busy) and make sure you state that you are writing to OTRS specifically because your matter is confidential.
  4. I have no idea what you are asking about getting a job, and (if it is possible) less than no idea what you mean by "going to be in charge of my favorite music". I advise you to be much clearer than that if you are writing to OTRS.

Accidental overwriting

Distorted :(

While cropping File:Епископ Захолмско-Герцеговинский Григорий (Дурич). 9 мая 2014.jpg I accidentally overwrote the original image with the cropped version. The option to overwrite was somehow selected by default, which is not the case otherwise, and I noticed too late. The image now appears distorted and I do not know how to fix it or whether I can. Copyright help regarding File:Novo Alfa Pendular.jpg

I uploaded this image but I am not sure if I can do it. I would like to delete this to prevent problems with copyright.

@Msed12: : Welcome to Commons! I agree that it's highly unlikely that that picture is free. You can mark the image for speedy deletion by clicking "Edit" at the top of File:Novo Alfa Pendular.jpg and adding G7. How can I change the logo for an organizations page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by BostonMAUser93 (talk • contribs) 17:44, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

@BostonMAUser93: If you can be more specific, I or someone can give you a much more concrete answer. The short answer is: the same way you can replace any other image, and subject to all the issues about copyright as for any other image. - Jmabel ! talk 23:50, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Can I upload this picture?

I am wanting to have a cute cat picture on my profile here. But the first picture I uploaded was deleted because of copyright issues, even though I got it from a free avatar site so I thought it could be used on other sites without credit. Can I upload a picture of my cat that I took myself and use that on my profile? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fast Foe Comet (talk • contribs) 20:20, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

  • @Fast Foe Comet: Yes, as long as you start participating in Commons. So far your only contributions here are the cat photo and your own user page, so at the moment that would be subject to deletion as a personal photo by a non-contributor. I'm going to presume good faith on your part and that you intend to contribute here. If anyone tries to delete it on that basis before the end of July, please let me know and I will do my best to prevent that. I presume that by then you will actually do something here besides making yourself a user page.
  • Also: why on the picture of the cat? I cannot see how that is germane.
  • Also: PLEASE fill out Information or some comparable template for every picture you upload. If you upload with Special:UploadWizard that happens more or less automatically. Please go back to this picture and fix that. If you cannot work out how to do that, please ping me here and I will help. - Jmabel ! talk 00:03, 21 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the information, Jmabel. I've taken out the 3dpatent template since that seemed unnecessary, and added the information template instead. And I will try to start contributing other pictures here as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fast Foe Comet (talk • contribs) 09:03, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Help finding a photo somebody uploaded for me

Hello, I'm editing a Wikipedia page and directed a photographer to the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimedia_OTRS_release_generator to upload a photo for me to use. He emailed me, "The file is attached to the release and called Peggy Cafritz_Marqueo." When I search the Wikimedia Commons, I don't see it anywhere. I'm pretty new to this so I don't know if I'm searching for it incorrectly, or if he made a mistake when uploading it, or what. Can anyone help?

Permission for reuse of figures and diagrams

Hi Jmabel, this was one of my first uploads into Commons, and I was completely oblivious to copyright rules back then (not that I am too well versed in them now, mind). Uploaded images tagged for deletion due to missing copyright tag

I have uploaded three photographs that have been tagged for deletion due to missing copyright tag. Seeing the deletion notice I edited the image description Licensing section to add Pd-heirs to two images, and Pd-because to the other, but the deletion tags remain. I assume that they will therefore be deleted in seven days time. Could someone please advise if the tags I have added to the Licensing section are enough, or what other action I am required to take.

Additionally I am unsure if I have used the correct copyright tags because they all involve transfer of copyright: Pd-heirs : The photographs were taken by a German photographer who died in 1947. The archive passed to his foster son, and upon his death, to his daughter. The daughter sold the archive to a German photograph dealer, together (verbally) with all rights to publish. I subsequently bought the archive from the dealer with emails transferring rights to publish. Files: File: Kurt von Holleben Leipzig Marktplatz.jpg File:Leipzig little fair (klein Messe) September 1934.jpg

Pd-because The photographer worked for Agfa, and the portrait of him comes from his personnel file which the archivist at the Industrie- und Filmmuseum Wolfen sent me for the Wikipedia biography. File: File:Portrait of Kurt von Holleben.jpg

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whatanerve (talk • contribs) 12:57, 21 July 2020‎ (UTC)

@Whatanerve: Since you've now added copyright tags, you just need to remove the speedy-deletion template (the first line of the file description), since the pictures are no longer eligible for speedy deletion.
I'm not sure whether your templates are right, but they're likely to depend on the intricacies of German copyright law. I think the photos by Kurt von Holleben are in the public domain in Germany because he died over 70 years ago, so the should be tagged PD-old-70. Assuming they were not published before 2003, they're also in the public domain the the USA and should be tagged PD-US-unpublished. If they were published before 2003 then they might still be in copyright in the USA. If that's the case then I would be a little worried by the transfer of rights to the photo dealer, since some countries need such transfers to be in writing.
The personnel photo is more difficult: you say it was sent to you "for the Wikipedia biography", but Commons needs the picture to be free for all purposes, not just for use on Wikipedia. Unfortunately if the photographer is anonymous then it might remain in copyright in the USA until the 2050s, so I think an written release to COM:OTRS from the archive will be needed. --bjh21 (talk) 14:17, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Bachem Ba 349 Natter - uploading a historical document

I have an example of a Combined Intelligence Objective Sub-Committee report on the Bachem Natter interceptor project, dated July 1945. The 14-page report was written by a US Navy team and published by H.M. Stationary office. It contains mainly technical data - including hand drawings - and interrogation details of the German project team members. The report appears in the Natter Wiki page references as "Millikan, Clarke B. Natter Interceptor Project. CIOS Report No. XXX-107. London: HMSO, July 1945." (the actual CIOS target number is 5/182a)

I would like to upload a scan to the Natter WikiCommons page - AFAIK such Government documents (US - not sure about British) are not subject to any copyright restrictions.

Advice ?

Logo for Cultural organisation

Hello,

I'd like to upload a logo for Shennaghys Jiu, a Manx youth performing arts festival. It's only intended to be used for that article to show the identification of Shannghys Jiu and to dispel confusion between other Manx festivals. As far as I understand, as long as it's only the logo and it's low resolution, I can upload their logo. Just wondering if there's anything else I should know as I don't want put up something that would actually be copyright violation!

This is the logo I would like to use. I think it's low resolution enough but I obviously I want to double check it's all ok.

Cheers, CáitChrainn (talk) 09:54, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

@CáitChrainn: Hi, and welcome. Usually when someone uploads a smaller logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to post COM:L compliant permission for such works on your website or social media presence or send permission via OTRS because we don't allow Fair Use here. Also, any raster image will look jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg version, too. Batch license review

Hello, I am a new license reviewer, and I recently find this Category:Military of the Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic 169 files pending for license reviewing, all confirmed to be from a single free source, but with different source links. Is there any way to execute batch license review?廣九直通車 (talk) 11:03, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

@廣九直通車: VFC can do this if the file description pages are similar enough. If not, you can use AWB or JWB (if allowed).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:37, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: But as far as I know VFC can only do simple text replacements, while approving a file's license requires the exact source link. Is it using some sort of %V% settings? Many thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 廣九直通車 (talk • contribs) 13:45, 22 July 2020‎ (UTC)
@廣九直通車: Could you clarify two things?
  1. Are the sources already stated in each of the files?
  2. When you say "license review", do you just mean marking them as reviewed, or do you mean actually examining each source and verifying the license there?
Jmabel ! talk 15:13, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: If they are all from the same site, you can use "".
Nope. They are from the same website, but with different links of slight variation (such as https://mna.gpwb.gov.tw/post.php?id=13&message=98120 vs. https://mna.gpwb.gov.tw/post.php?id=8&message=97939).廣九直通車 (talk) 01:55, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: And regarding your questions, the sources are already stated, and I'm already sure that they are all from a single free source (but with different links of slight variation).廣九直通車 (talk) 01:51, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: I'm not sure I see the basis of the "Nope" there. What are you saying "no" to?
Unless I am missing something, it would be permissible just to turn Licensereview into "" (ideally with a newline before the Licensereview). If you want to actually replicate the full source info, then yes that could be trickier and would require some work with regexes.
Question, though: I look at File:20200208 SuperStar Aquarius1.jpg and follow the two links it gives as sources and see nothing like this image at either stated source. So what do those mean as sources, and how can you confirm them? - Jmabel ! talk 03:49, 24 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Oh crap... I think the source (Military News Agency) just deletes historic press release after some period of time (and in which I originally thought it was my computer's caching problem). The sources were deleted so quickly that even archive machines leave no traces. But what I can confirm is that everything from the source are free (licensed under GWOIA), and at least some of the sources can be proven by watermark.廣九直通車 (talk) 04:00, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Metadata pulled by Upload Wizard

I just uploaded File:Agamon HaHula fields on OpenStreetMap.png, to which a metadata description "Test of descriptive content" and GPS coordinates (33 deg 5' 51.00" N 35 deg 34' 54.00" E) have been added. However:

(1) the coordinates are not showing on the commons metadata table at the bottom of the page, and
(2) the description box in the information template was not automatically filled from the description metadata by Upload Wizard

Any help here would be appreciated. The plan is to bulk upload a number of files once this is figured out.

That is the name of the file: File:New Delhi Municipal council building, Connaught Place.jpg. Not sure why it's showing up as a redlink. I presume that the file is en:File:New Delhi Municipal council building, Connaught Place.jpg. Note the different capitalisation, and the "en" to indicate English Wikipedia. How to update company logo?

The company listing for Anglo-Eastern Group shows the wrong logo in Google search results (the old logo that was phased out three years ago). How can the new logo be added, and why is it not even displayed on the Wikipedia page itself? In any case, the new logo should be shown in Google search results, but I'm not sure how to do that. Thanks for any assistance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AEcomms (talk • contribs) 03:12, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

  • Certainly no one here can tell you how Google makes its decisions.
  • Nor, really can Commons speak for Wikipedia (in whatever language, and of course each Wikipedia is separate from the others). I'm guessing you mean the English-language Wikipedia.
  • It looks to me like Anglo-Eastern Group's logo is a mildly stylized æ character. It doesn't look to me like something eligible for copyright. You could presumably upload it here on Commons, mark it as Textlogo and Trademark, and use it in en:Anglo-Eastern Group, the same way any image on Commons can be used in any Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 03:34, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply! A company logo isn't technically my own work, so I selected the appropriate option before uploading, but am then prompted to indicate the Creative Commons Attribution. There are so many alternatives and I have no idea which one should apply to a company logo. Seems the upload function on here is not really intended for company logos, so it's a bit confusing on how to proceed. Could you please offer guidance? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by AEcomms (talk • contribs) 06:11, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

@AEcomms: Near the bottom of the list of potential licences is the option "Another reason not mentioned above". If you choose that option, you get a text box where you can enter textlogotrademark, which should have the right effect. You can use the "Preview" button next to it to make sure. --bjh21 (talk) 13:30, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

What is the correct way to fill out requested move template for a category

Hello,

Sorry to bother you again about this. I have request a second category move, using Move cat. However, though I put the category I am requesting under "new_category", it does not show up that way on the saved template. See my request at Category:African-American cemeteries. I have asked for the hyphen to be removed to be consistent with other categories on the Commons, such as Category:African American history and all other African American categories, I am doing something wrong. The temple insisted on repeating the "old_or_wrong_category" under "new_category". There is something I am not understanding. Thank you very much. Krok6kola (talk) 13:20, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

@Krok6kola: I think you're confusing Move cat and Move. The template that you've applied to Category:African-American cemeteries is Move. Its documentation says that the first parameter is the new name, unlike Move cat where the new name is the second parameter. --bjh21 (talk) 13:26, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you. You are right. I had been told to use the Move cat and started out using that, but the template came out wrong, so I fiddled with it. Now I have been told to use COM:CFD. I have looked at that. Unfortunately, where it says "nominate a category by hand" is only a gif. Is it easy to nominate it by hand?
Why, when the cat is the only African American category on the Commons that has a hyphen in it, is removing the hyphen considered controversial? Best, Krok6kola (talk) 15:03, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
@Krok6kola: Please let's not have highly scattered discussions (at least 2 sections on this page; your talk page; some category talk pages; CFDs) each discussing multiple aspects of this matter. Either we want a centralized broad-ranging discussion, or we want separate discussions each on one clear topic.
In particular, the help desk is not where we can sort out disagreements about hyphenation.
You have been told to use CFD to get consensus, and (only after consensus is reached) to come to User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands and to use Move cat on that page. You have, in fact, now been told this more than once. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

Moving a category

Hello,

What is the best way to move a category? The "move" tab does not work for me. Also, what is meant by a "page" in all the directions regarding this issue? Thanks, Krok6kola (talk) 01:02, 23 July 2020 (UTC)

I have done that, but it doesn't work. Here Category talk:Rye African-American Cemetery I have explained what I am asking, as the template insists on putting in the wrong name and will not put in the name I am requesting no matter what I write there. Krok6kola (talk) 04:13, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
  1. @Krok6kola: Nothing I can do with a red link here.
  2. The template doesn't "insist" on doing something. You probably filled it out wrong.
  3. As is already being discussed on your user talk page, a lot of stylesheets prefer hyphenation in adjectival phrases. I didn't particularly like the move from "stained glass windows" to "stained-glass windows", but it was consensus and I accepted it. No one user should be unilaterally making changes related to this without a broader consensus via CFD. - Jmabel ! talk 16:00, 23 July 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: I am very, very sorry for everything. I have great difficulty in the area of understanding directions on the Commons; my skill set is sadly lacking. Regarding uploading images & Copyright

Hi I am new to Wikipedia. My Question is how can I come to know whether an image available on internet is freely available for reuse or has various copyright. Can I use any freely available image in a Wikipedia article. If not, how can I get images for uploading. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 117.199.185.115 (talk) 05:49, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Most of what you find on the Internet that is any newer than the 19th century (or 1925 in the U.S.) is copyrighted. If you become familiar with how copyright and free-licensing work, and especially if you are good at communicating with people to get licenses for previously unlicensed material, then you have a fair chance of finding illustrations for a particular Wikipedia article from material that is already online, but in general you are much more likely to be able to contribute by taking photos yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 15:19, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Quiggin's Kendal Mint Cake

Hi,

I have uploaded several photos I took for Quiggin's Kendal Mint Cake with the owner Peter McCafferty approval https://www.originalkendalmintcake.co.uk/

How do I get the photos approved? as there is NO copyright violation at all.

Thanks in advance — Preceding unsigned comment added by Slater1234567890 (talk • contribs) 12:01, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

@Slater1234567890: Ideally, if the pictures are already on Quiggin's Web site, get them to put a notice somewhere on that Web site to say that the pictures are released under a (specific) free licence. Then ask for the files to be undeleted. Alternatively you can arrange for the copyright holders to email OTRS, but that's much slower and more labour-intensive, so please avoid it if you can. --bjh21 (talk) 13:39, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:London Calcutta Bus.png

It is a screen shot of an old photo of 1957, i don't know whether there is any copy right problem. I am not clear that this type of low resolution images can be used for academic purpose

--N Sanu / എന്‍ സാനു / एन सानू (talk) 14:07, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

@Sanu N: Copyright for photos in the UK is generally at least 70 years from publication, so there's not much hope that this is in the public domain. Commons only accepts images that are free for all purposes, so a restriction to academic use isn't acceptable. You might be able to upload the picture directly to English Wikipedia as non-free content. Uploading a schematic

Hello, so I am making a wikipedia article about a plane model, but there is absolutely 0 pictures of that exact plane model here in wikimedia, so I decided to make a schematic picture of the plane myself using already existing ones from the internet as reference. I did not go for a 100% copy of the already existing ones, but I tried to just get the shaping correct so people would get an idea what the plane would have looked like. So, when comparing the one I made and the ones from internet, mine looks clearly way less detailed, and overall simpler and thus almost completely different than the ones I used as reference. The only similarity is the shape of the plane itself. So my question is, am I allowed to upload my picture here? --Veeti H (talk) 18:33, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

  • @Veeti H: As long as you did not draw enough from any one source to constitute a derivative work, yes. Obviously, no one can copyright the general shape of an airplane. - Jmabel ! talk 21:33, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I don't usually deal with images so I'm not quite sure what to do. Two files that should switch names with each other

I found two files which seem to have been incorrectly named. Furthermore, they are misnamed in such a way that they would have been correctly named if they switched names with each other. The files are:

  • File:Bednáreček Flag.jpg
  • File:Bednáreček CoA.jpg

One shows a coat of arms, but has "Flag" in its file name, while the other one actually shows a flag, but instead includes "CoA" (short for coat of arms) as part of the file name. Downloading files

How do I download images? When I click the download link all that shows up is a field with the URL and link, but no download button. I want to download the image map of the uk. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Friederikevs (talk • contribs) 16:53, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

@Friederikevs: Hello. When the field with the URLs and links pops up, you need to click one of the links at the bottom of that little window. You will see different sizes of the image that you can download up to "full resolution". By clicking either of these links, you will get to see the image inside your browser. Now you can right-click the image with your mouse and choose the download or "save as" option from the menu. De728631 (talk) 17:44, 27 July 2020 (UTC)

How to update file?

Hello. How do I update a file? That is, we have an image, File:History of tallest buildings chart.jpg, but its out of date. I drew an updated version on my computer, and I want to upload this over the old version, using the same Commons image name. How? Thanks!

(BTW FWIW I looked everywhere I could think of, and the archives for this page, and found no info. Is this such an uncommon thing that there's no need for instructions? If not, maybe consider adding instructions somewhere where they can be found. Just a thought). Herostratus (talk) 01:22, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

@Herostratus: On the file page at bottom of "File history" section is the "Upload a new version of this file" link: [4] MKFI (talk) 07:22, 28 July 2020 (UTC)
@Herostratus: ... but read Commons:Overwriting files first. In this case I think it would be fine, though, especially since you were the original uploader. --bjh21 (talk) 12:10, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

How do i get my new page to go live on Wiki

Hello - i have written a piece and i can't figure how to make it go live, do i need to upload it in a way? If so i can't figure out how. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Academy-aureus-argent (talk • contribs) 17:59, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

@Academy-aureus-argent: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! Assuming you're referring to en:User:Academy-aureus-argent/sandbox, and you want to turn it into an article on the English Wikipedia, you could just add to the top of it. However, I don't think that would be wise: that draft is a long way from being an acceptable Wikipedia article. This is hardly surprising: writing a new article from scratch is a very difficult process, especially for a beginner. I'd suggest that you read en:Help:Your first article, which has some helpful advice in this area. If you have further problems, it would probably be best to ask at the Teahouse on English Wikipedia, which is a more appropriate forum for newcomers' questions about editing English Wikipedia. --bjh21 (talk) 19:23, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Money

Can I make money from this Wikipedia website? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gary Otieno (talk • contribs) 21:46, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

This is Wikimedia Commons and not Wikipedia. You may not use any of these pages for advertising or selling things directly on such a page, but this is a repository of free media files that you can use for commercial activities. Depending on the licencing for a file, however, you may be required to attribute the copyright holder or author. De728631 (talk) 22:11, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi there. We do not allow profile pictures for new users that have not yet made significant contributions to any Wikimedia project. Commons and Wikipedia are not a social network and no webhosts either, so your userpage is supposed to reflect your work at these Wikimedia projects only. De728631 (talk) 22:08, 28 July 2020 (UTC)

I have a picture of a singer I want to upload for use in a wikipedia article I'm doing for her

Hi,

I have a picture of Charlotte Summers I want to use in a Wiki page I'm drafting up in my personal space (which I'll move to the public space once her parents have approved the article - I want to make sure it doesn't have information that is private). I chatted with her dad in facebook messenger, Simon Summers, who approved this picture for me to use for the Wikipedia article.

the picture in question is on her public Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/charlottesummersofficial/photos/a.261819014165202/1218944798452614/?type=3&theater

Her dad said: "the photo belongs to us", and when I asked if it was ok to use for the wikipedia article I'm doing for his daughter, he said "Sure. No problem" and "Thanks".

So is this sufficient for me to upload the photo?

Thanks, -Don — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dbeusee (talk • contribs) 23:36, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

@Dbeusee: Hi! Unfortunately, that is not quite enough for you to upload the photograph here on Commons. All images here need to be useable by anyone for any purpose, not just Wikipedia. The easiest way to achieve that would be to have them indicate that the image is under an allowed license, such as CC-BY-4.0. They could post this with the image or e-mail it to COM:OTRS.
Also, technically the person who we need permission from is the copyright holder, which would normally be the photographer, not the subject. So it would be good to find out from them who that was. – BMacZero (🗩) 00:09, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
@Dbeusee: Hi, and welcome. Further to what BMacZero wrote above, if the photographer sends the photo and permission via OTRS, please have them carbon copy you on the email message so you can stay in the loop.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 07:12, 27 July 2020 (UTC)
@BMacZero: @Jeff G.: I hope I'm using this correctly. Thanks guys - I'll work with the dad to get it done. He's the photographer. I submitted the article for approval without the picture - I'll add that later after it's uploaded by one of us. Thanks! ツ --Dbeusee (talk) 06:37, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Wrong Wikidata Infobox

Hello, I like to ask to delete or correct the Wikidata Infobox at Category:Arnold Fanck as it sports the wrong content. It shows the life data of Arnold Fanck's son Arnold Ernst Fanck (1919–1994) who himself got a Category. Arnold Fanck was born in 1889 and died 1974. Thanks in advance, Wereldnieuws (talk) 18:31, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

For some reason, Wikidata doesn't let me edit the Commons category section of the Wikidata page to change it to Category:Arnold Ernst Fanck. So, until someone with whatever Wikidata authorization can fix that, I removed the box from the page on Commons, as you already did, but this time using the undo button and hopefully Pi bot will finally get the message this third time and stop edit warring with users. -- Asclepias (talk) 18:58, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
I was able to correct both linkages on wikidata. – BMacZero (🗩) 00:09, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Photo of my grandmother taken in Bayreuth in Germany in 1931

I have a photo of my grandmother that I would like to upload to an article about her, "Ingeborg Holmgren-Bona". The photo has been in my familys possession since 1931 AND I strongly believe the photographer does not/do not/did not mind us us using it for this purpose (by the way the photographer is dead since many years). ok?

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Asterix63 (talk • contribs) 16:56, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

Has the photographer been dead for more than 70 years? Ruslik (talk) 19:54, 30 July 2020 (UTC)
And if not, do you know who the photographers' heirs are? - Jmabel ! talk 01:12, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
Hmm. File:Ingeborg Holmgren Bona.jpeg.jpg looks halftoned, which means it's not a direct photographic print but probably comes from a publication. Identifying the publication might help with identifying the photographer. @Asterix63: It's not what the original photographer thinks that matters, but what the current owner of the copyright thinks. That's why we need to either identify that owner or show that there is no owner because the copyright has expired. --bjh21 (talk) 10:44, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
The current owners of copyright would be the original photographer's heirs since you cannot transfer copyright under German law. Even a print publisher would only have gotten a right to use but never the full copyright. De728631 (talk) 13:16, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

It looks like this is a newer user who's not familiar with Wikipedia Commons. Whenever I talk to him about her editing behaviour, she loses her temper easily and over minor things. Over the past 8 months her behavior has not changed: she continues to be unable to listen to and work with others. Because she thinks everyone wants to delete her photographs. Personally, I think she needs someone to tell her what to do.--Kai3952 (talk) 17:31, 30 July 2020 (UTC)

We don't have a "page" Sinop here at Commons. If you are referring to Category:Sinop, please note that this is intentional because categories in Commons collect all available photos related to a certain topic. However, you might want to edit the Wikipedia page where found multiple photos. Generally though, it is a good idea to have more than one representative photo of a populated place in a Wikipedia article. De728631 (talk) 13:11, 31 July 2020 (UTC)
