Transfert request: file from Wiki in vietnamese to Wiki Commons

Hello!

I would like use the following file on the wiki in french: vi:Tập tin:Lang Thai giam trong khuon vien chua Tu Hieu.jpeg (file from the wiki in vietnamese), but there not link wiki mentioned allowing to use this file, as usual.

I tried to transfert it via "Move-to-commons assistant" , but answer isthat the file does not exist.

The file is from the article in Vietnamese: Chùa Từ Hiếu which is also mentioned as "does not exist". The article in french Pagode Tu Hieu does not exist either, when I mention it in this message, Why? On Commons there is no direct link between the Wikis en English, french etc?

Can you help me please? (note: if you make the transfert please change the categories as follows: - in English = "Category: Tu Hieu Temple"; - in french = "Categories: Temple bouddhiste au Viêt Nam|Hué ".

Please, can you tell me which wiki help page I need to consult to learn how to do it?

Thanks in advance for your help.--Contributeur2019 (talk) 04:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

@Contributeur2019: The Commons help page about this is Commons:Moving files to Commons. I used CommonsHelper (also called "Move-to-commons assistant"), and it seems to have worked: File:Lang Thai giam trong khuon vien chua Tu Hieu.jpeg. On CommonsHelper, I entered "vi" in the field labelled "Language code" and "Lang Thai giam trong khuon vien chua Tu Hieu.jpeg" in the filed labelled "Image name". Note that I did not include the namespace prefix, "Tập tin:" in the name field. --bjh21 (talk) 18:30, 5 November 2019 (UTC)

An "old print" appears in an out of print geology text; can I upload it?

Page 48 of a 1993 geology text displays an "old print" of fossil trees in South Wales, UK. You can see the image at https://books.google.com/books?id=6MImr8bzqvYC&printsec=frontcover&dq=ager+new+catastrophism+nant&hl=en&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjT9r2dl8XlAhUROn0KHeMzCOQQ6AEwAHoECAAQAg#v=onepage&q&f=false and page down to 48. The "print" appears to be more than a century old. It's a fascinating image included by Derek Victor Ager, the former president (1974-1976) of the UK's Geologists' Association https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_Geologists%27_Association in his now out-of-print text. I don't know whether this "old print" can be uploaded for use on Wikipedia. Can someone help me determine this? BobEnyart (talk) 04:42, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

  • We'd need to know more about its date. Usually, if we can't determine authorship, we presume anything more than 120 years old is OK, so right now that basically means 19th century but not 20th. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Unclear license

Hi! Do you know what this license mean (Attribution-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported (CC BY-ND 3.0)? Am I allowed to share the pictures from this video under this license? Perghhh (talk) 12:53, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

@Perghhh: Hi. Because of Commons' licensing policy, we can't accept CC-BY-ND license in Commons. CC-BY-ND means that you are free to share the file if you "give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made", but you can't adapt it in any form (in fact, you can't share the modified version). CC licenses accepted in Commons are CC0 (public domain), CC-BY and CC-BY-SA. Ahmadtalk 13:13, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

Unable to replace old image with updated image - User:MathewsSH/sandbox

I am updating an article using my own work. The article is illustrated with several images, which I created and have placed in WikiMedia Commons. As I proceed in writing and editing the article I adjust the images to better illustrate the concepts. Occasionally I discover I am able to replace the old image with a newer version (ex. Option_value_v_S0-X0_-_UR_constant.png), but only after several tries. I now need to replace another image (Fig. 8 Comparison of logarithmic and triangular option distributions.png), which I succeeded once, but now after several tries am no longer able to replace the image for a third time. Not succeeding on replacing the image, I then have also tried re-submitting afresh that revised image to WikiMedia Commons, but seem to be blocked by error messages that state either a) Something went wrong: This file is a duplicate of the following file: or b) WikiMedia Commons not uploading the submitted image with a "!" and "0 of 1 file uploaded".

What am I doing wrong such that I can reliably replace the images in my article without a lot of hassle? Scott Mathews 206-981-9464. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MathewsSH (talk • contribs) 20:27, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

@MathewsSH:
  • Just an aside: wouldn't SVGs make more sense here?
  • It is possible that what you are seeing is just a caching error: that you are uploading successfully, but your browser is caching an old version. If you are not sure whether you can clear your cache, could you try looking at the images in question either on a different machine or with a different browser that would not already have older versions cached? - Jmabel ! talk 21:36, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

I just want to say thank you to Jmabel. You were correct -- clearing my cache and then reloading the image worked just fine. Thank you. Scott — Preceding unsigned comment added by MathewsSH (talk • contribs) 01:38, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Uploading pictures is not working

Hi everyone,

I uploaded 17 pictures on Wikimedia Commons. It took me about half an hour to categorize these pictures, and write descriptions for them. I want to click on the 'upload' button (don't know the exact english name, in dutch it is 'publiceer bestanden') in the wizard, but nothing is happening. There are no errors, just nothing is happening. Is there anyway I can try something to prevent me from loosing my work? I use Chrome and Windows 10.

Deleting images without license. Copyright violation.

Hello, how long does it usually take for any admin to delete images uploaded without permission that have already been reported? Here and here.

Sorry, I don't want to bother anyone, it's just a little question I have because there is a user cropping images that are not his own, uploading them here and placing them on several pages of Wikipedia. He already has a history of uploading images that are not his own.

Thank you very much. gabibb2 03:16, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

In obvious cases you should nominate them for Speedy deletion. Ruslik (talk) 15:24, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Help me fix this

I recently uploaded File:Chandrayaan-2 lander and orbiter integrated module.jpg, and tagged File:Chandrayaan-2 lander and orbiter integrated stack.jpg (older one) as duplicate. I did this because my upload had a better license and the older one was already tagged for deletion. So an administrator redirected the older one to my upload. In the process, however, the translated captions present in the older one also got deleted. So I tried copy-pasting the captions from the file history of the older one to my upload. This didn't work and the wikitext I copy-pasted still remains there as wikitext. Help me fix this and make the captions work.— Vaibhavafro💬 03:58, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

User:DemirezerBaris - Checking the Corrections

To whom it may concern,

User:Patrick Rogel warned me about the issues in my uploads. I did not add the necessary source and copyright information to almost all of my uploads. After that I sent an e-mail to OTRS and they corrected all of my uploaded data for me. However, now I know how to upload any media correctly. None of my uploads violated copyright laws but only issue was that I did not know how to properly upload them. It was my mistake.

While I was sending my e-mail about permissions, User:Turelio deleted my user profile. He was right about doing it in that scenario but I got every necessary permissions about my uploads. I wrote in their Talk Pages, I mean Patrick Rogel and Turelio, but they did not change the claims. I believe they could not find time to do it. I did not violated copyright laws but until User:Turelio corrects my user profile I believe I am somewhat a flagged user.

1 - I ask from the community that someone can re-check my uploads and clear all of the copyright claims? 2 - Turelio deleted my user profile. Is it possible to undo it? 3 - Is it possible to undelete the photos and allow me to give necessary permissions? File:Gizem Sözeri.jpg and File:Batuhan Civelek.jpg are the photographs I am talking about and ask you to undelete them. I do not want to re-upload them before learning your approach to this situations. I do not want to act without the consent of the community.

I learned how to give required copyright information.

Thank you for your time, I will be even more careful about my uploads.

Sincerely,

Barış Demirezer (talk) 10:12, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

Why should I be a person different than the one that I am, just because you do not allow me to edit my page. and the last thing, it´s the explicit contravention to the basics of Wikipedia, o " Patience, respectfulness, etc..." of the stewards that acted in this opporunities. Rejected Media

Hello, Team.

As I was editing on the List of cakes page, my photo upload was rejected.

'We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons.'

The photo is a very old photo from 2013 and has been used on social media for advertising my cakes. I no longer have the actual photo and am left with my original upload. Most of my cake photos are the same, as I save them on social media and discard the photos on my camera every so often. I would love to add my photo to my cake edit on your 'List of cakes' page. Please, help me to accomplish this, as I would like to add more of my original recipe cakes. Thank you so much!

Hackers once more – how “safe” are quality images here on Wiki Media Commons?

Earlier I described what had happened to my image of Bryggen – Bergen – Norway. Since the image was amongst the winning images in the Norwegian competition, I thought the image had to be fine after it truly had been altered with (being extremely pixelated when I watched it on my phone).
But the image is not fine. I shoot in RAW, so I get lots of details to work with on my images. There were so fine details and the image was so sharp that you could read the small street signs on the walls – like the small sign on the wall of “Julehuset” with the name “Bryggen”. Now that sign as well as other details is absolutely blured, lots of details in the wood have disappeared amongst other details. And the worst is that a shadow in the middle of one of the buildings (the one called “Enhjørningen”) has been added. It really is an impossible thing as there were nothing to hinder the sun. The shadow is not seen in the reflection on the sea. The statue of the unicorn on the building has lost it's horn (ugly manipulated when removed). I had to enlarge it quite a bit to see it. I couldn't just upload the original version as the file had been hacked on my computer as well. Hacking on my computer has a nightmarish history.
I have now brightened the shadow and tried to get back some of the lost details. But it wasn't possible to do much as the image is to reduced.

Why did this happen? Is this just an act to degrade me (haters have done that for years in whatever way they could come through with)? Or might it be other motives here? Bryggen in Bergen is big business, world inheritance as it is. All kind of tourist items are produced and sold, paintings, calenders, cups, tiny copies of the houses etc etc.
My picture is gone. I chose to upload it for Wiki Loves Monuments so many people could benefit from it. I didn't upload it for anyone to earn money on it. Might that be what have happened? Already after a day or to after having uploaded it to Wiki Loves Monuments, it was moved away from the other images I uploaded for the contest, half way down on the last page amongst the last images, many of them not participating in the contest. Who bothers looking at all those images in little Norway? Then the pixelating. And then I shout out load here at the help desk. And the image reappears in such a reduced state.
I just wonder what has happened with the original picture!
— Preceding unsigned comment added by 999Vic999 (talk • contribs) 16:11, 4 November 2019 (UTC) 999Vic999 (talk) 16:06, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @999Vic999: There are exactly two versions on that page. Both were uploaded by you. Neither shows any evidence of being tampered with after it was uploaded. The original from 29 September 2019 looks to me to be slightly better than the one you uploaded today, which appears to have some minor artefacts from sharpening, but the two versions are barely distinguishable. Both are reasonably crisp, but in neither case can I distinguish a small sign on the wall of “Julehuset” with the name “Bryggen”. Could you describe exactly where that sign would be?
  • Are you certain that these legibility issues did not arise in your conversion from RAW to JPEG before you uploaded? If you didn't back up the RAW file, there is really no way for anyone (including you) to know, but I can think of no way your JPEG could have been modified after it was uploaded. It does, however, seem very unlikely that someone has made an identical hack on our servers and your computer.
  • If you really have reason to believe that someone is messing with the files on your computer, I strongly recommend buying an external drive (they are pretty cheap these days) and maintaining offline backups of any valuable files. - Jmabel ! talk 00:03, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for answers!
I do have three external harddrives. Since my computers harddrive is rather full at the moment, I use one of them in the work with my images.
You guys have blind trust in the system – what the users see, the user history, log and so on. I'm sorry to tell – I don't longer have that belief or “faith”. Expert hackers can go behind the scene.
Two of my files must have been through some kind of hacking since what I got on my mobile was two really pixelated files, one of them was this image, one of them was the star I made – not the one with the star only, but the one with the text on. You could hardly read the text, it was that pixelated. If all my images looked like that, obviously it could have been my mobile screen. But when just two of them looked like that, something is wrong.
And you're right, the picture file is this File:Bryggen i Bergen refleksjoner.jpg
The vector image file converted to png is this: File:StarHelper.png
I can assure you, the Bryggen image has been tempered with. There were no such thing as a shadow on the building with the unicorn statue, the horn was in it's place on the unicorns forehead, and the details in the wood were fine all the way.
Tuesday I went down to the same spot and shot a new image of Bryggen with the same camera. The light was about the same as the weather was nearly identic. The original image was shot 15.10 2015 at 17.26, the new image was shot 05.11.2010 a couple of hours earlier. Three weeks time difference in late autumn means about one hour when it comes to light here in Norway (about 3 minutes a day). Now we have wintertime, we didn't 15.10. So whatever difference in light conditions, were minor.
Same camera (not much difference in camera setting), about the same light conditions, same spot, same photographer – the images should be more or less identic. There were a little breeze this time, so the sea wasn't identically crisp and clear, but not much difference there either.
So what did I get now? The unicorn building with no shadow, the horn is there, and all the details in the wood are in it's place, you can see it all. And I can insure you that the original image of Bryggen first uploaded, was like that. If you are to read the street sign Bryggen (in the left of the image on the wall of “Julehuset” building, you must resize the image more than 200%, as the text is tiny, and have good eyesight and a little bit of good will :-). Anyway the image is really, truly crisp with good details. It's so easy to see if details are good in an image with wood, because there are plenty of them. And that's how the image of Bryggen I uploaded to Wiki Media was. As it is now, there are large areas with no details in the wood. It just wasn't like that.
Anyway there are more to this than meets the eye.
How do haters work? The most conscious of them, are into things like voodoo, black magic, witch craft etc. Not very pleasant issues for the rest of us that aren't. Anyway, for such people anything can symbolize something in the life of a person. So why was the shadow placed on the building with the unicorn, and why was the horn gone? What does a unicorn symbolize? What does a horn symbolize?
A piece of creative work like an image a person has shot and worked with, will for such people be a link to reach that person. That's how voodoo works. And I myself is anyway convinced that this is the main reason for the mess being done to this image. That doesn't mean that there aren't also other reasons – like theft. (Both issues are part of my experiences with haters.)
This isn't the only time an image I have uploaded here on Wiki Media have been abused. Another image has been described earlier here on the help desk – no need to go into that issue again. Just look for the red heart encouraging love!
I guess I better wait with uploading more images here until I have conquered the hate!

And another pic identical to it, list this woman as a young Leonarda Cianciulli. IT IS NOT. I have read a book on the woman pictured. Her name was Marie Marguerite Ali Bey. Born 1890 in France, died 1971. She was married to an Egyptian Prince named Ali Kamel Fahmy Bey. She was acquitted of his murder in the early 1920's. The link above and another list her with the name of Leonarda. And another page https://allthatsinteresting.com/leonarda-cianciulli shows the picture with a link to wikimedia. If you look her (Marie) up on yahoo and google you will find this is Marie NOT leonarda..... — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 107.77.201.143 (talk) 17:55, 6 November 2019 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Ef131-03.jpg

It is unclear who the copyright holder of this image is, even though it was taken in early 1948, shortly before the EF 131 program was axed in June 1948.--Extrapolaris (talk) 00:15, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

The copyright holder is either the Russian Federation or an officer who took hat photo. Anyway the copyright is unlikely to have expired. Ruslik (talk) 08:15, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Downloading images

Gosh it is all so overwhelming!

I want to simply download an image.

If I click the download button I get the whole image on my screen but no sign of any jpg that I can save.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%22Terminal,%22,_1892.jpg

I want the image as a jpeg to go into my downloads.

If I do Save As it is a Preview. I do not want that.

Why is it so difficult and frustrating? It is so simple on other sites like Pixabay - click download - the file downloads to the download tray and then can be saved to a folder.

Even the question thread at Wikimedia is so confusing.

I found something that looked like there could be an answer re downloads - I clicked the link and got a huge page full of all sorts. I gave up.

It would be really helpful if there was a clear instruction on each image page.

Even this page is confusing! I don't want to Publish changes, show a preview or show changes. I simply want to send this message. Because I will not be sure that this message will get through I will now have to go searching for another way to send it- so much time wasted-it totally spoils the experience of what should be a wonderful site to explore. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victorialbert (talk • contribs) 03:28, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @Victorialbert: Image download is a built-in browser/OS function, not typically a feature of a particular site. You don't say what operating system or browser you are using, so your mileage may vary, but assuming you are on a Windows system using either Firefox or Chrome and that you use a mouse:
    • To get to the maximum-resolution version of the image for download, click on the image itself. The maximum-resolution image will display in the tab, with nothing else there.
    • Right-click on that image. You should get a menu that includes "Save Image As…". Click that and you should get the usual Windows device for saving a file to you system.
  • If you are not on Windows, or do not use a mouse, etc., you'll have to be more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 04:21, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Is Facebook a developer platform or is Facebook a personal approach related to all students developers in social media? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nnortoja (talk • contribs) 13:56, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Nnortoja. It's not totally clear what your question has to do with contributing to Wikimedia Commons, which is a responsibility of free media for use by our sister projects and the general public. I'm afraid if you have generic questions about the nature of third-party website, you will need to find an alternate venue to seek an answer. GMGtalk 15:12, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Image upside down!

Hello,

Is it possible to flip an image 180 degrees? There is media file that is currently displayed upside down on the webpage showing Paolo Uccello's geometrical sketch of a Mazzocchio (a type of hat). This drawing was instrumental to the discoveries the artist made about perspective, so it is quite crucial that it is the right way up so that readers/viewers can make sense of the perspectival techniques that he employed. Here is a link to the page in question.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Daayat01 (talk • contribs) 17:48, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Daayat01. There should be a link on the image description page saying "request rotation", where you can request a bot adjust the image accordingly. GMGtalk 18:25, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey FigureSkate321. Regardless of how you uploaded the image, if you found the image online, then it is almost certainly not appropriate for upload here. The vast majority of images online are copyrighted and non-free, while Commons only accepts images that are in the public domain explicitly released under a free license. This requires usually A) that you took the photo yourself and are releasing the image by uploading it here, B) that the image is very old, or C) that the place you got the image from originally already clearly specifies that it is free, by including a specific license such as Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0, which is the license Wikipedia is published under. Number of downloads | Download statistics

Is it possible to know the number of downloads of a file uploaded to Commons? If yes, how?--991joseph (talk) 08:43, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

You can always have a look at the page view statistics. Just go to the file description page, then select “Page information” from the Tools, and then you will find a link to the “Pageviews Analysis” at the end of that page. Example: Pageview Analysis for File:Philharmonie, Berlin, 170518, ako.jpg (today's picture of the day), or that of yesterday with nearly 2,000 hits. --AFBorchert (talk) 08:59, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Sadly it doesn't show the number of downloads!--991joseph (talk) 10:40, 8 November 2019 (UTC)
That's impossible to quantify. If someone opens an image you can't tell if he/she downloads the image (right click/save) or not. --Magnus (talk) 12:14, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

My Photos

I carry a camera with me all the time. Today, I started a page for myself and included a photo. Somebody named Dejavu rejected the photo because it was used by another site for an interview I did.

I got this message: This file is a copyright violation for the following reason: https://www.provideocoalition.com/art-cut-editing-series-unfortunate-events/amp/

I often get photos of myself and colleagues and allow them to be used on various sites. This does not mean I still don't have control of them.

What do I need to do to use my photos on my wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by S2bass (talk • contribs) 03:01, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@S2bass: There are several different ways to approach this.
  • You can indicate the free license you are offering when you post a photo to a site or page clearly under your control (e.g. your personal or business web site, your Flickr page if that is where you first upload, etc.). Then indicate that as your source when you upload to Commons.
  • Similarly, on such a site or page you can indicate that this Commons account is yourself. Then you can reference that in the "permissions" field of Information for your Commons images.
  • You can write an email from an email address clearly associated with yourself as described at COM:OTRS; since you are doing your own uploading, it would make more sense for you to use that to clarify your ownership of this account than to give permission for specific photos (the latter is the more common use of OTRS, to clarify permissions on images uploaded to Commons by third parties).
I hope that helps. The intent here is to make sure that this account is really you, not someone plagiarizing you.
If this is still unclear, please feel free to ask for more details. - Jmabel ! talk 05:19, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you. I will try the email route. — Preceding unsigned comment added by S2bass (talk • contribs) 04:33, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi all, is File:Battlefield - Bad Company 2 for PS3 boxes at Costco, SSF ECR.JPG considered fair use? (Talk/留言) 13:08, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

There's no Fair Use on Commons. I guess those are below C:TOO. --Magnus (talk) 13:35, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

It's borderline, because the boxes in question are borderline for having enough complexity to be eligible for copyright. That threshold varies in different countries. I'd recommend taking this question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 17:54, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @Brandonag12: Possibly, but it is obviously recent enough to be copyrighted, so we would need an explicit free license (e.g. CC-BY) from the copyright-holder. Is there any reason to think they have offered one? And, if not, then why do you think it is "available" on terms that meet Commons requirements of allowing (for example) commercial reuse and derivative works? - Jmabel ! talk 03:44, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

Understading about "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Germany license"

Hi All,

I am trying to understand some of the creative commons attributions as I would like to use some of the images for non-commercial usage. As I would like to use these images for one of the story telling YouTube video

As part of my search I see there is a license "Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Germany license". Can any body throw some light on this license ? Can I use images under this license ? Is there any seperate tool/documentation, which gives more details about licensing ..?

Some of the content/photos I am looking is on topic WW-2 , which can be viewed from below links Any help is highly appreciated.

De728631 (talk) 18:13, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

How do I upload photo if I don't know the exact date it was created

I have a photo from the local historical library that they have given permission to use with proper attribution. It is dated 1980 but the month and day when it was created is not provided. The Upload Wizard says I need to provide the day, month and year it was created to upload it. What should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bklein61 (talk • contribs) 21:26, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

@Bklein61: Please do not upload this photo. For images like this we need a permission by email coming directly from the copyright holder. It is also questionable if a library is in a position to release a 1980 photograph under a free licence. Usually this can only be done by the original photographer or their heirs. If the library itself inherited this photo though, you may ask a representative to send an email as explained in COM:OTRS. Afterwards you may upload the image and put a code string on the file page.
Now regarding your question: In the upload wizard, there is a button with a pen right next to the date field. If you click this pen, you can enter a year without month and day by typing the number into that field. De728631 (talk) 01:08, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

Could some Spanish speaker please come up with a proper category name for en:Jeanine Áñez? • @Roy17: Category:Jeanine Áñez should be fine. Not surprising that someone doesn't use an "ñ" in a Twitter handle, and the segundo apellido in the parliamentary page would be her mother's maiden name, with about the same status as a middle name in English. Photos Deleted

Dear Gbawden,

I had a group of photos deleted here on Wikimedia Commons. The photos are my own work. I really think Wikimedia Commons is a great source for images on the web and as a photographer I'd love to contribute. I'm still learning the rules the best I can and understand completely that my images were deleted. Maybe I had the wrong license on them. Am I allowed to upload them again under the Public Domain license?

Thank you,

Shtarka1 (talk) 14:43, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Hi @Shtarka1:. Thanks for wanting to contribute. Its not that you had the wrong license - its that the photo was found on Instagram and thus there was doubt about ownership. If a photo has previously been published on the Internet we need confirmation of ownership via the COM:OTRS process. You will have to show that you took the photo and have the rights to release it. Hope this helps Gbawden (talk) 05:57, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Oh OK thank you. I'm not sure how to do this. I appreciate you helping me. Is there a form? I'm sorry. Shtarka1 (talk) 11:17, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Shtarka1: There are some templates you can use for your email. I suggest that you read over the page at COM:OTRS - it is a very useful guide Gbawden (talk) 11:23, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

There are a bunch of different ones, I'm not sure which one applies exactly to my photos. If I know which one I can fill it out and email it back. I really appreciate your help. Shtarka1 (talk) 11:27, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Shtarka1: look at the template on COM:ET - there is also an Interactive generator you can try Gbawden (talk) 11:29, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

I will fill click the Interactive Release generator and take care of this soon. Thank you very much for taking the time to help me. Shtarka1 (talk) 11:38, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

It is not letting me add the images back as they were deleted before, seems like I have to add the images back before I can continue on the Interactive Release generator so I'm stuck in the middle and can't continue. If I'm doing this correctly. I added all the names of the images into the generator as instructed but I'm stuck now. Shtarka1 (talk) 15:49, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Here is the direct link to the photos previous upload log that I'm trying to fill out OTRS process getting them reinstated with the Interactive Release generator :

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log/upload&limit=100&user=Shtarka1&type=upload I'm not sure what to do. I appreciate your help very much Shtarka1 (talk) 15:54, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

I know all the information for each photo, like exact descriptions is on record with Commons. I'm not sure I even have all that saved. Any help would be appreciated, you've really been great. Thanks Shtarka1 (talk) 15:57, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

@Shtarka1: Sorry for the late reply. Can I ask that you post your issue to the Help Desk? They are better suited to assist you Gbawden (talk) 11:29, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

OK I will now thank you Shtarka1 (talk) 14:20, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

I look forward to hearing back and getting these images that I took and own permanently back on Wikimedia Commons.

Thank You, Shtarka1 (talk) 14:37, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Shtarka1. Thanks for your interest in contributing to Wikimedia Commons. The files aren't really "deleted" in the normal sense, but in a technical sense, are merely "hidden". So once we receive the permission email, we can have them restored without you needed to reupload them.
Having said that, it would be helpful if you had access to the original photographs, with the original meta data intact, rather than only the copies post-digital manipulation. That helps to lend additional credence to saying you were the original creator, and can also provide useful information for those who want to reuse and remix the content. GMGtalk 14:52, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Is there a template I can use to email. There is so much on here just not really sure what to send. I do have the photos loaded on file. I don't have a list so I would have to see them in the gallery and dig through and find them. Thank you again for getting back to me. Look forward to hearing back from you on the template to email. Shtarka1 (talk) 15:07, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Hello again Shtarka1. As you probably have seen, there is specific wording proposed at COM:CONSENT. As far as a list, you can probably just include a link to your user talk page where there is already a list of the deleted files. The important things are 1) that you can demonstrate that you are the owner/photographer of the images, and 2) that you release them under a specific free license. The suggested license is Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International, which allows the files to be used for free by anyone for any purpose, so long as they give you proper attribution as the creator. GMGtalk 15:14, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Thank you and I apologize for being a bit naive to these technicalities on Commons, I completely understand and want them reinstated properly so I'm all for this process. I clicked the link you sent above COM:CONSENT should I try to directly send an email rather than the Interactive Release Generator I assume yes? Shtarka1 (talk) 15:20, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

From looking I would fill in my information into the template and send the email to the address specified. Thank you, Shtarka1 (talk) 15:23, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Shtarka1. Either one is fine. You can also just send an email directly to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. As long as you hit those two points (establishing ownership, specifying a particular free license) then we should be able to work around any rough edges. GMGtalk 15:33, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

OK here is a copy of what I plan to send, looks OK?

To: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I hereby affirm that I Steve Mark, the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of both the work depicted and the media as shown here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Shtarka1 and have legal authority in my capacity to release the copyright of that work.

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work, even in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright as well as the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by the copyright holder.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

Thank you for taking the time to help me

Shtarka1 (talk) 15:35, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

@Shtarka1: Works for me. When you send it, should should be an automated response with a confirmation ticket number. If you will give that number to me, I can look it up on the back-end and we can take it from there. GMGtalk 15:41, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

deletion of y own media

why you are rejecting this , i take this photo how can i assure you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mobeen ur Rehman (talk • contribs) 17:54, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Mobeen ur Rehman. It looks like many of your photos were deleted because they appeared to be personal photos. Commons accepts many types of images, but they must be within the scope of the project, which generally requires that they be realistically useful for an educational purpose. Photos of family and friends usually falls outside of this scope, and would be better suited to upload on social media. However, any photos you wish to contribute that are within the scope of the project are more than welcome. GMGtalk 18:10, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Copyright restrictions

I have copied a photograph from the web. https://thumbnail.myheritageimages.com/288/193/288193/500/500004_321803m8c23zy5h0g1ai82_C_398x570.jpg It derives from the web site https://www.myheritage.com/search-records?action=person&siteId=288193&indId=1000037&origin=profile. Am I right in assuming that I cannot add it to my draft AfC, even though the subject of the photo died in 1901? Also, would the source be acceptable in terms of reliability? BFP1 (talk) 18:07, 11 November 2019 (UTC)BFP1
Hey BFP1. Unfortunately, without additional information it's hard to say. Wikimedia Commons does allow upload of very old images where the date of publication and the author are unknown, but in order to meet this the image must be at least 120 years old. Since we know only that the image was created 1901 or earlier, this image falls short of that by a couple of years. If we could find the source for the image in the site you reference, we may be able to adjust that, and demonstrate that it is suitable for upload here. GMGtalk 18:22, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
I think it originally came from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Williams-69930. Which indicates it came from a family album, but I don't think that helps with the date of the photo. Could you direct me to where I can get advice on the free use of such a photo? Thanks BFP1 (talk) 21:01, 11 November 2019 (UTC)BJP1

Copyright help regarding File:Rachel Blaney.jpg

This is a photo of a Canadian politician. I'm not sure if this would be public domain. --Ilovecats516 (talk) 18:18, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Ilovecats516. Unfortunately, Canada is not one of the countries whose governments release their official work into the public domain. So the image will not fall out of copyright until 50 years after publication. GMGtalk 18:20, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Well that sucks. Where could I find a public domain image? Ilovecats516 (talk) 18:54, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Ilovecats516. Looks like we have two currently at Category:Rachel Blaney, but they're both pretty crappy quality. In cases like these, I would try to find a public relations contact with her office and see if they will release an image they/she own(s) under a free license. They can do so by following the instructions at COM:CONSENT and sending a verification email. GMGtalk 22:51, 11 November 2019 (UTC)

Current revision of file just won't show up

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Argentine_Province_Map_with_Capitals_and_Flags.png

I spent along time making this map image back in the summer but no matter what I do, the Image seems to not show do to some unknown error I cannot figure out.

I uploaded two new versions of the file, and it still will not show, however, when I look at old revisions, now the Image shows, but when I reverted, now the current image still doesn't show. You get an error if you try to look at it in anything other than it's full size, and if you look at it on other wikimedia sites, like wikipedia.

I can't figure out what's wrong. Help is greatly appreciated

I believe this is a known bug. It should fix itself in a matter of hours. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:49, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
It's a cashing issue. Typically this is an issue on your browser, not on our site. Most likely, if you look at it from any other computer, or any other browser on the same computer, it is fine. Most browsers can use CTRL-F5 to clear their cache. - Jmabel ! talk 01:08, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Why got my logo declined?

Hello,

I tried to upload the new company logo to this wikipedia site: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concardis I chose a png-file which was created by us (the company Concardis). Unfortunately the file got declined. But I could not find the reason for that. Could you please help me?

How to request OTRS check?

How do I request someone to check whether a permission statement has been received at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org ? Specifically, can someone please check whether a statement has been received from "isropr@isro.gov.in"?— Vaibhavafro💬 14:53, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

commercial use

I have had a request to share some of my photography work (so it can be used in a page on Wikipedia) but cannot do so if commercial use is allowed. Why is there no option to license the work as creative commons but non-commercial? It's a very simple addition too the license. I did the work fundamentally for a good cause (documentation of a historic building in order to help spare it from demolition). The potential for someone to use my photos commercially is at odds with me sharing them for the greater good. This is the first time I have used Wikimedia Commons and I'm really baffled with this aspect. If there is another way for me to get the photos onto Wikipedia with no commercial use I'd like to know how. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Barton Taylor (talk • contribs) 03:07 13 November 2019‎ (UTC)

  • @Barton Taylor: Commons is specifically intended as a repository of media that may be freely reused; that is why we don't support a "non-commercial" option.
  • You don't say which Wikipedia this is about, but I'm guessing that since you are writing in English, you mean the English-language Wikipedia. Unlike Commons, they have some provision for non-free use of images. I don't know whether it would apply to this particular case (not nearly enough information in your remarks); see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content or you might ask about this at en:Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 07:30, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

Deletion without explanation: account 240Kent

It was active up until this afternoon (November 13th) and I made small changes but now that I've logged on again my account is gone.

I don't understand the deletion without explanation; I have been diligent in following the rules of both account and page creation, and am completely unclear as to why my account could/should have been removed. All I have done since this account was created 3 weeks ago was create two small entries and I had planned to do more to continue to establish legitimacy. Now, because the account was deleted, I can't even access explanations from moderators as to why anything I did was removed.

I assure you I am not a bot, just someone who wishes to contribute useful information to the ever-expanding Wiki encyclopedia. How can I request reinstatement of the account plus explanation of why it was removed in the first place so I can ensure it doesn't happen again?

Thank you, 240Kent — Preceding unsigned comment added by 240Kent (talk • contribs) 19:21, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

@240Kent: Welcome to Wikimedia Commons! Why do you think your account is gone? You're clearly able to log in as 240Kent because you posted the above from that account. That's the only visible thing that account has ever done on Wikimedia Commons. Over on English Wikipedia, you made some edits to Wikipedia talk:Sandbox, which is a "sandbox" page that gets blanked regularly. If you want to see your changes, they're here. You also created the page User:240Kent/sandbox, which is still there. --bjh21 (talk) 19:56, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

  • I presume this is about File:عبد الباسط.jpg. I believe the question is, given your past history of uploading other people's work as your own, why someone should believe that this is different.
  • I will point out, in favor of this image: it does not seem offhand to be anywhere else on the web, and it is higher-resolution than most sites offer. I would be inclined to assume good faith (though I would be more inclined to do so for a user who had no history of uploading copyright violations). - Jmabel ! talk 00:10, 15 November 2019 (UTC)

Category:Gonzalo Ariza

Hi. (Sorry for my english...) I'm concerned because almost all images in this section have been tagged for deletion by Y.haruo. I'm afraid he's right... But I would like to see what can be done in this case, because the articles about this painter will loose a lot without them. The painter, Gonzalo Ariza, died in 1995 and the paintings are in public museums. In this cases who could give the permission(s)? --Felipe Restrepo Acosta (talk) 15:47, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @Pedro Felipe: Only the heirs to his intellectual property can do that, unless the paintings are in the few countries that would allow freedom of panorama for paintings displayed in museums. Most likely, those would be family members, though it would take some research to find out who. If he is still represented by a gallery, then you have a place to start researching. - Jmabel ! talk 16:06, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload pictures from the DARPA Robotics Challenge Website?

Hello, I was wondering if I could upload pictures from the website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZaaraTE (talk • contribs) 12:18, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

For example, this one like that. ZaaraTE (talk) 13:02, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey ZaaraTE. It looks like the answer here is a firm...maybe? DARPA is a US Defense Department initiative, and official works created by employees of the Defense Department would be public domain, and suitable for upload to Commons. Unfortunately, the site itself doesn't seem to specify anywhere that I can see whether the media on the site is the creation of a DoD employee or not. Compare for example this DoD image, which clearly specifies public domain, along with the creator and their rank and title. Probably what needs to be done here is to contact someone from DARPA and ask for clarification about the copyright status of the works. GMGtalk 13:19, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick answer. ZaaraTE (talk) 13:24, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

@DoomWarrior: using examples from my own work: what I did in the "description" section of File:Parkour 01-1.jpg, which was for a very similar purpose; or create an actual gallery page like Seattle and the Orient (or in a different style Romanian Orthodox churches in Bucharest); or you can just put it as a subpage of your user page, like User:Jmabel/People. Can I upload a picture from a journal to wikipedia ?

I want to upload a picture from an article. This is the Link to the article https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3111322/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mn2019 (talk • contribs) 02:53, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @Mn2019: As it says at https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/about/copyright/, "Almost all of [the material available from the PMC site] is protected by U.S. and/or foreign copyright laws, even though PMC provides free access to it. … The respective copyright holders retain rights for reproduction, redistribution and reuse." Wont let me upload photo?

I drove to a ghost town, Blitzen, OR in 1986 and took a picture. I figure somebody in the world might want a picture of Blitzen some day, there are no other photos on Wikipedia. What a colossal waist of my time! All I get is a message saying We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons.

...but there's no sort of even a pretense of an explanation on any guide in Wikipedia Commons. Just a stupid picture, sorry I wasted my time, and now I wasted more time complaining. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrkempen (talk • contribs) 03:48, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

...and when I publish this, without any sort of clue from the heading of this, it ends up in some poor Asian' artists page? Who I've never heard of? I scanned my own photograph, attested that it was mine and a filter still blocks it, and there's absolutely no explanation on why photos get blocked or how to fix problems, or why it was flagged, just cartoons telling me not to use other people's work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mrkempen (talk • contribs) 03:54, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

@Mrkempen: Did you try to upload from Special:UploadWizard or somewhere else? If (for example) you tried using that cross-wiki upload from the English-language Wikipedia, that filters out a lot of files that can readily be added with Commons' upload wizard. - Jmabel ! talk 07:51, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

uploaded photo thumbnail not showing

I uploaded a photo for the Star Filling Station in New Raymer, Colorado, from its listing on this page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Weld_County,_Colorado

The image is this:

File:NewRaymerCO StarFillingStation-160397.jpg

But the thumbnail has not shown up. I used to do this all the time, but it's been a while. Am I missing a step?

charlotte couchman — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cecouchman (talk • contribs) 17:23, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Cecouchman. It doesn't appear that you ever added the photo to the list after you uploaded it. The software all this is based off of is quite dumb, and there is no automatic system to add relevant images to articles. All has to be done manually. GMGtalk 20:57, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
Actually there is/was a semi-automatic way to pick up on those images. I have not updated my scripts yet but @TheCatalyst31: might see this. Agathoclea (talk) 21:17, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
The script only works if someone runs it manually, but I just did that and the photo should be in the article now. If you ever want to do it yourself, there's a hopefully-working version of the script here. TheCatalyst31 (talk) 23:38, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your help. I didn't remember adding the thumbnails manually before, only on the page. I will try to refresh myself on the methods. I appreciate it. And I apologize, but I have no idea how to format this response. User:Cecouchman

Deletion Request

An administrator has marked for deletion a photo that I took of the author C.S. O'Cinneide because it appears on another website http://edenmillswritersfestival.ca/authors/for-adults/c-s-ocinneide/ . This website had the photo provided to them by the author, C.S. O'Cinneide. She uses it for all her promotional material and it appears on her website (shekillslit.com), on her publishers website (https://www.dundurn.com/authors/CS-OCinneide) and beyond. This deletion request should be removed. How can this be achieved. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MarcusK0100 (talk • contribs) 03:40, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @MarcusK0100: I assume this is File:Headshot 300.jpg. When you uploaded, you said it was your own work. You are now saying this thing about "provided to them by the author", etc. This is a bit confusing: are you saying you are the photographer, or not? (Different routes to go, depending on whether you are, so let's start there.) - Jmabel ! talk 06:01, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

The photo was taken by me and provided to the author to be used freely at her discretion. She provided it to the Eden Mills Writers Festival (the website mentioned in the deletion request) and to all websites that require an official photo. It appears several places online. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MarcusK0100 (talk • contribs) 12:23, 20 November 2019 (UTC) MarcusK0100 (talk) 12:27, 20 November 2019 (UTC))

@MarcusK0100: See Commons:OTRS on how to verify that you have permission to upload pictures. Secondarywaltz (talk) 15:10, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
@MarcusK0100: Slight clarification on what Secondarywaltz said: Commons:OTRS will tell you how (and to what address) to send an email clarifying that the work is yours, that it was previously published without a free license that would be acceptable to Commons, but that you are now offering to grant a cc-by-sa-4.0 license. Sorry about the difficulty here: we have this OTRS policy because so often people upload a photo they found "somewhere on the Internet" and falsely claim it to be their own work. - Jmabel ! talk 16:19, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

  • You were not logged in when you wrote this message. If you were trying to upload without logging in, that wouldn't work.
  • I'm pretty certain we don't have a message anywhere that tells someone they "violated the copyright act." There are some messages that say that the copyright status of certain things isn't clear, but if the message says what you indicate, perhaps you were not actually not on this site when you tried to upload, but on something else that looked similar or had a similar name.
  • You don't indicate what upload tool you were using, which makes it pretty hard to say anything more specific. - Jmabel ! talk 06:05, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Copyright grant reviewed?

Hello! I wrote to a copyright holder to ask to use their image and send an email as stated in the rules. The email was sent on October 12th. I was wondering how long does it normally take to check the info? I'm talking about File:Delphine Fawundu.jpg to be more precise. Thank you!--Less Unless (talk) 10:04, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Less Unless. It looks like the ticket was already processed and we have not received any reply. We normally do not accept permission sent from generic email accounts, since anyone can go out and register Bill.Gates@gmail.com, Leonardo_da_Vinci@yahoo.com, or QueenElizabethII@hotmail.com, and there is no guarantee that the email represents the person it is supposed to. If you are in touch with the copyright holder, you will need to have them resend the permission with an official verifiable email account, such as that from their official website, so we can be sure the information is coming from the right person. GMGtalk 16:07, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
HI, GMGtalk, thank you for explanation. What if the person doesn't have another account? I have wrote the holder via their official page and got reply from gmail.com, which is, i suppose, used as an official one. Are there any other ways to prove the copyright belongs to the person? Thank you--Less Unless (talk) 20:55, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Well Less Unless...we can get creative in whatever way we can think of so long as it verifies it. I've had people send in their driver's licenses and passports, although that's probably something most people aren't comfortable doing. Alternatively, they could make any page on their website (even a temporary one) and link us to it, where they state that this is their official email that they use, even though it doesn't include their website domain. GMGtalk 21:35, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
Got it! ;) Thank you for your time, i'll figure it out!--Less Unless (talk) 21:58, 20 November 2019 (UTC)

42 days ago, I asked 雅婕 on her talk page why this file have two different dates, and she said angrily to me: "There is nothing to say to you guys. If you want to plant and fall, let's come over! I have a clear conscience! After all, this is just the dark side of the human nature. Beatrice Hsu is my favorite idol Everything I did was for her sake. If you want to continue to make trouble... I..... no objection... I have no opinion" I really don't see the point in trying to make trouble in this way. My problem is not malicious; on the contrary, I want to help her. So, I recently discussed with 雅婕 on Chinese Wikipedia. Unfortunately there is no result after two weeks(her reply to me diff/56844237). I know why she is angry with me, because someone deleted her uploaded photos. In fact, this is not related to what I asked about about in my original question. If I want to edit her photos, then I need someone to help her get familiar with policies.--Kai3952 (talk) 11:37, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

I don't speak or read Chinese (yet), so I can't follow your conversations. But the only dates I see are the date of creation (which are consistent between the EXIF and the infobox) and the upload date, which is much later. How do you think there are two different dates? @Rodhullandemu: 雅婕 can speak and read English. If you look at the editing history of this file, you will see that I have corrected the date. Actually, I am worried that I made her angry again. She only cares about those deleted photos, but clearly this is not helpful for Wikimedia Commons. Also, the more serious problem is that 雅婕 thinks that all the people who edit her photos are want to delete hers. To be be perfectly honest, I feel that she has a strong hostility towards me. I don't know how to help this user.--Kai3952 (talk) 16:02, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

@廣九直通車: You say that I didn't believe her? She did not answer my question directly, so I choose to believe the EXIF date. Also, I haven't distorted the meaning of anything. Incorrect Snippet for Jonas Salk entry

WhenI googled Jonas Salk earlier today, the snippet that appears for the Wikipedia entry is bogus. It describes hiim as "a Nigerian medical researcher and virologiest... Born in Dhaka, he attended the City College of Dhaka and Muslim University School of Medicine, later choosing to do ganja reserach instead of becoming a practicing escort...." Salk would probably get a good laugh reading that, but it is definitely a prank at best and should not be let stand. • It looks like that content was vandalism on the English-language Wikipedia, reverted after 9 minutes on November 9. No idea why Google would have picked it up at that moment, but Wikimedia Foundation is not responsible for what Google does. & I strongly doubt it had anything to do with Wikimedia Commons, the site you are on, so there is no help we can give you (or anyone else) in this matter from here. - Jmabel ! talk 03:52, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @Peetred: Not in general: from what I can see there is no clarity at all on that page as to their copyright status, and some of them might be copyright violations even on that page. "Publicly available" and "free of copyright claims" are two entirely different issues. You'd need to establish a specific, Commons compatible free license (or public domain status) for each of these individually. - Jmabel ! talk 17:51, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

  • @Carladalessandro: You say "the page I manage". As far as I know, no one on any WMF site "manages" a page other than their own user page.
  • Would I be correct in guessing that this is about File:Canadian College Italy Logo.png?
  • You say you made the file in Adobe Illustrator. That's fine, but does someone else (e.g. the college itself, or a designer) own a copyright on the logo? It is (slightly) above the threshold for being able to be copyrighted. We would need the relevant copyright-holder to send a clear licensing permission, as described at COM:OTRS
  • I assume you want to add this to en:Canadian College Italy. Assuming the rest of this gets sorted out, you can do this by using "Edit source" to add at the top of that page. - Jmabel ! talk 18:03, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Not sure if a picture is public domain

So I want to upload a picture (http://ftr-wot.blogspot.com/2013/04/revised-american-tank-destroyer-branch.html first picture on the site) for use in an article, it is of a then classified Army Tank destroyer from 1937, would I be allowed to upload this picture?--Texas-Dude1914 (talk) 18:14, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

It's hard to say because at that website, nothing is related about the origin of the image. To determine its copyright status, we would need to know the photographer and the year when this photograph was first published. De728631 (talk) 19:41, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
If we could establish that it was taken by an employee of the U.S. government as part of their official duties, then PD-USGov (or something more specific, say for a military branch) would apply. I don't see any way to find the author of the blog, and unfortunately they don't say which of six cited references any specific photo comes from, but with the aid of a good library and/or a good librarian you can probably sort it out. - Jmabel ! talk 01:37, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

File in article marked as copyright violation - how to act?

Hello,

my name is Kira Richter, I am the online marketing manager for the company WASGAU Produktions & Handels AG. We have found an article about our company on your website with outdated information. We have created an account with you in order to update this information including our current logo. Someone (‪Josve05a‬) has flagged our logo (File:WASGAU-Dachmarke.png) as a copyright violation. Since we are from the company in question and therefore the owner of the copyright, I have no idea how this is a violation of the current copyright law. We wanted to supply the public with current information and data about our company, in order to support people who search for information about us. Therefore, we would like to have this accusation deleted, if possible. I'm looking forward to hearing from you on this matter.

With kind regards,

  • @Capt Aung Myin Moe: You can upload a map of your own, and the new map can then replace the current map in Wikipedia, but generally we don't overwrite maps that are an accurate picture of the situation at some point in history. (Not a hard-and-fast rule, but that is the normal way to do this, especially because the existing map presumably cites sources in its description, and the new map would involve at least additional source; also, the authorship would be different.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:16, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

how turn off annoying notices from Wikidata?

Hi, I am getting dozens of repeated notifications from Wikidata, related to a few recent uploads of photos and creation of a Commons category or two, by me. I mainly edit on Wikipedia, but I receive the notices from Commons there. These are notices like "More notices from another wiki" and then "Wikimedia Commons: The page Category:Joseph Frederick Adams House was connected to the Wikidata item Q65118496, where data relevant to the topic can be collected." and there is an indication that User:Mike Peel must have made the recent Wikidata edit.

Offhand, I kind of dislike Wikidata altogether and I do not understand what it is good for, at all. And further, they seem to have a broken notifications system. :(

The notifications persist after I acknowledge them in Wikipedia, and also after I go over to Commons and acknowledge them there. I suppose I would just like to be disconnected from Wikidata entirely. TIA. --Doncram (talk) 03:22, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Further, when here in Commons, I still see the notification about the category mentioned above, and when I click on it and mark it as having been read, it remains still showing that I have a notification to read. No matter how many times i mark it as read, it still shows as unread. However for whatever reason I am not still seeing some other notices that were being repeated. Currently this is the only one which will not go away.--Doncram (talk) 07:34, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Replacing a PNG file with an SVG

Hi. I want to replace the current coat of arms of a Swiss municipality at with my newly made file . The current file is used on different Wikipedias in about 50 pages, so I'm wondering what would be the best way to replace the image. Can I simply overwrite the original PNG with an SVG or will that break stuff? Is there some sort of "replace all instances of file X with Y" functionality? Or should I manually edit all Wikipedia pages to point to this new image? Thanks --Taktaal (talk) 19:09, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Taktaal. There is Commons:GlobalReplace, but it's not maintained, and I do not know what these "known bugs" are that haven't been fixed. Otherwise, you should not overwrite the png with an svg. I'm not even entirely sure that you can do that, and I do not know how the software would handle an svg with the wrong file extension. GMGtalk 21:37, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
Cool, I downloaded and tried that and it works on about 10-20% of the pages, so there do seem to be some bugs --Taktaal (talk) 23:34, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

How to call the program in desktop mode

In contrast with Wikipedia, Wikimedia always comes up on my iPad in mobile mode, which is useless for serious editing. Every time I have to change it manually. So I want to make a shortcut. Hey Deisenbe. The way that I do it (although not necessarily the best way), is that if you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page on mobile view, there is a button to click to view in desktop. The device/browser you are using will generally remember your preference for desktop mode unless something random resets it. GMGtalk 21:40, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
Unfortunately my browser (Safari in ios) doesn't remember it. That's why I'm trying to force the program to come up in desktop. With Wikipedia it does remember. What is "the best way"? Deisenbe (talk) 00:41, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

How can in delete photos

Hello if i understand the photos that i have of me is not able to be put on wikimedia. If i understant its a mistake. it is possible to delete the photos that has to be delete? i dont know how to do it thank you for your help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Leocadie Odp (talk • contribs) 23:02, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

If you want to delete a file that you yourself uploaded, you can add the text G7 to its description, then an admin will delete it --Taktaal (talk) 23:57, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
But that is only if it is recently uploaded (about a week) and if it is not being used. After that, since you have granted an irrevocable license, you would have to give a reason to delete it, just like anybody else would. - Jmabel ! talk 16:20, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

New version of photo replacement

I have made a new improved version of File:Montage of Kabul City.png. But I cannot replace it with the new version yet. Can a admin do it for me? My new version I uploaded as File:Montage of Kabul City2.png. --Dasworth (talk) 20:09, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Please see COM:Overwrite. We do not replace existing files with substantially different images – especially not if they were created by different users. Some pictures you used for your new collage are fundamentally different from the ones in the first file, so it should not be overwritten. These files can easily exist as alternative versions, so users can choose which one they would like to pick for an illustration of Kabul. De728631 (talk) 20:43, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

File:Inflorescencia_de_aloe_y_un_colibrí,_en_Pisco_Elqui,_Chile.jpg

File:Ciudad_de_Betanzos._Gaiteros_delante_de_la_iglesia_de_San_Francisco._Provincia_de_La_Coruña,_Galicia,_España.jpg

Gracias.--Carlos Teixidor Cadenas (talk) 17:33, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

  • Does anyone know: is it even possible that the upload stripped a particular field out of his EXIF? As far as I know, upload makes no change to the file itself. If geolocation was in the EXIF of the file he uploaded, then it should be in the file on Commons, no? Jmabel ! talk 01:41, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Category for speedy deletion does not appear in speedy deletions

Hello. The category Category:Media needing categories as of 4 February 2015 is empty. The page uses the template UncategorizedHeader, and in its code, it has the following:

{{ParmAnd3|{}|{}|{}|
{{#ifexpr: {{#time: Ymd| {} {} {}}} < |

}}

That is, if the category is empty and not of a future date, then it gets tagged for speedy deletion; namely, it gets put under Category:Other speedy deletions. While I see the category Category:Other speedy deletions on the page Category:Media needing categories as of 4 February 2015, it does not appear in the Other speedy deletions. Any idea why? Pbrks (talk) 14:53, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

@Pbrks: An additional pipe was introduced on the category page in an edit that produced Aapparently this broke the template syntax of UncategorizedHeader. I removed it, and the category was then shown again in "Other speedy deletions". Subsequently I have also deleted the page according to the request. De728631 (talk) 21:06, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
@De728631: Ah, I think this is intentional, as every other page has this pipe, and removing it will enable auto-categorization by a bot. Thanks for taking the time to look into it! Pbrks (talk) 04:13, 26 November 2019 (UTC)

Hey Eatcha. I would suppose yes. It looks like the category is pretty well a mix of exterior and interior lighted buildings. But with 300 files in the parent category, and another few hundred in child categories, it may not be a bad idea to look at splitting into some additional categories, and exterior/interior may not be a bad place to start. How-To Upload new Version of File (for translated SVG File)

Hey, I've translated the file: File:Horse_anatomy.svg But I have NO idea how to upload it as new version. Any tutorials available? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonnenlanze (talk • contribs) 27 November 2019‎ 14:16 (UTC)

  • @Sonnenlanze: You don't say translated into what, but I presume you intend to upload a new file, not overwrite the existing file with a new version, right? You upload it just like any other file, then you link the two by using Derived from on your new file and Derivative works on the old file (editing just like you did here). If you want your work checked after you do that, to make sure you got it right, you can circle back here and ask someone to take a look. - Jmabel ! talk 16:15, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

@Shawn in Seattle: The upload page for that competition is here, however if you are entering File:Female Mallard duckling.jpg you should note that the size of an image should exceed 2 megapixels in most cases. Yours is 760656px, about a third of that. Looking closely, some might say it lacked sharpness. Up to you, and good luck. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:39, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
But I don't think he/she can re-upload, now that it's here. Given that it's already here, I believe the thing to do would be to tag it with us. - Jmabel ! talk 22:06, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

Stone circles in Wassu

The ancient stone circles in The Gambia, precisely those at Wassu are located in the central River Region of the country which is found in the Niani district. They are made up of about 11 stones which are successively situated one after the other in a circle. They are believed to be the burial mounds of kings and chiefs in the olden days. For some people, the site is seen as a prayer ground because they consider it sacred. They are more than a century old and have been dated back between 750AD-1000AD. And because of this, locals believe that there is a curse to anyone who disturbs when at the site. This might be the reason why they have lasted long without significant modifications. The site is a national monument and is open to the general public. Essentially, it is the image seen on The Gambia's fifty(50) dalasis bank note. - ACCESS GAMBIA Gambia's information site. www.accessgambia.com/information/wassu-stone-circles.html — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maina jallow (talk • contribs) 28 November 2019‎ 23:30 (UTC)

Lipoma video upload

Hi, how can l upload informative lipoma video on Wikimedia Thanks24x7health (talk) 04:58, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

@24x7health: Thank you for your question, and please observe the following instructions, in order not to get your video deleted.
  • Firstly, please ensure the video is entirely made by yourself, or the author of the video has given you a clear permission regarding the video, and including a license accepted on Wikimedia Commons (See COM:L for more information). If you have received permission from the author, make sure to let the author to send a permission email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, in accordance to the instructions at OTRS.
    • For video published on a webpage maintained by the author, the author may also specify that the video is licensed under a certain free license. Our colleagues will later check the license given.
  • Next, as Wikimedia Commons does not accept the most common video file format, .mp4, you should convert your video into accepted formats through Video2Commons, which you can find more information at COM:V2C.
  • Lastly, please use Special:UploadWizard to upload the video. Follow the instructions, and you should be able to upload the video easily.

Anyways, if you need help, please feel free to contact me on User talk:廣九直通車, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 10:50, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

cross-linking/ uploading a variant of a file (must exist alongside original)?

I've used Photoshop to remove the coloured background of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Embroidered_back_cover_-_Prayerbook_of_Princess_Elizabeth_(1545),_binding_-_BL_Royal_MS_7_D_X.jpg

That file description includes the phrase

Please do not overwrite this file. Any cropped or modified version should be uploaded with a new name and linked in the "Other versions =" parameter of this template.

I hunted around enWP and Commons and started several aborted uploads that either locked me into overwriting the source file, or offered no visible way of linking my edit to the original.

I've uploaded my file now, to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Embroidered_back_cover_-_Prayerbook_of_Princess_Elizabeth_(1545)_white_bg.jpg

J. Hartwell Harrison

This is a recently deleted file which lacked the required license. My work is primarily on the Wikipedia site, as a Senior Editor; I am not as skilled with the technical handling of images, though I have succeeded in obtaining a couple of email permissions for OTRS. I have learned however of the importance of our having a collaborative attitude on these sites. In my view, the editor who deleted this file was acting hastily in accord with technical requirements, and he could and should have provided more notice before the deletion. Also, the deleting editor's comments to me in making the deletion were poorly chosen. I am left with the impression that the primary motive on Wikimedia Commons is to purge files rather than make the slightest attempt at their remediation. I am not likely to attempt additional contributions to your platform. Hoppyh (talk) 01:45, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

  • I presume this is about File:J. Hartwell Harrison.jpg. Because you stated when you uploaded the file that it is your own work and dated it 2016-06-22 (the day of the upload), but in the deletion discussion stated on October 20 that it was by your aunt and (given the death date of the subject) was from 1984 or earlier. Ideally, someone should have helped you through the next step -- that you needed to clear up the rights -- but as far as I can see no one did, nor conversely did you take the initiative to ask anyone what you needed to do. Over a month later, User:Jameslwoodward seeing that there had been no further discussion and that the rights issue hadn't been addressed, deleted it.
  • There's nothing final about that deletion. You can still address the rights issue. Either your aunt or (if she is no longer alive) the heirs to her intellectual property can send an email as described at COM:OTRS. (If you are yourself heir to her intellectual property, then you need to send such an email.) Once that happens, the image will be undeleted and the rest can be sorted out. I see you had used (with the inappropriate Self tag); assuming that is the license they want to offer, we will end up restoring it with either that tag or (if the rights are inherited) .
  • I do want to respond to one thing that you said above: we need to attribute a work to the person who actually created it, date it accurately, and for a work like this that is probably still in copyright obtain a license from someone who has the legal right to grant that license. If you want to call these "technical requirements," then the emphasis is on "requirements". - Jmabel ! talk 04:19, 28 November 2019 (UTC)
Jmabel has stated the case well, thank you. My apologies for a slow response, but I was out of town for the Thanksgiving holiday. The uploader claimed that he was the photographer when in fact he was not. He may or may not be his aunt's heir and therefore may or may not actually have the right to license it, but that must be done using OTRS.
As for:
"In my view, the editor who deleted this file was acting hastily in accord with technical requirements, and he could and should have provided more notice before the deletion."

The DR was open for a month. It was a prima facie case for deletion. My closing comment:

"Then your aunt owns the copyright and she, or her heir, must send a free license using OTRS",

clearly sets forth the action necessary to have the image restored. Please remember that Commons gets around 10,000 new images every day and must delete around 1,700 of them. A dozen Admins do most of that work and we work fast. It's too bad that we don't have more time to be more helpful. I'm sorry for that, but that's all we can do with the volunteers we have. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 23:40, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
