Copyright help regarding File:CK twitter.jpg

I found his profile picture on his twitter here https://twitter.com/krauthammer

But there is no copyright information or anything and his biography wiki didnt have a picture. What can I do?

--Zgrillo2004 (talk) 03:05, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

  • This is a picture of him, but presumably not one that you have rights to use. This should be deleted from Commons unless you can obtain a relevant free license from the copyright holder (which is unlikely). And I don't think en-wiki allows "fair use" for images of living people. Hence why there was no photo on the article. - Jmabel ! talk 05:48, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Dear Help Desk

I have images provided by people who have records on wikidata. They have said that it is Ok for me to use them on wikidata. However, having seen the wiki commons form it seems that a more formal process is required.

I have seen a community boilerplate email as follows

I hereby affirm that [I, (name here), am] the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of both the work depicted and the media.

I agree to publish the above-mentioned content under the free license: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International.

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.

I am aware that I always retain copyright of my work, and retain the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by me.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

which can be posted to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

My question is does the image owner post this directly with the image attached. Or is the image uploaded and then referenced in this email, and how is this done?

Many thanks, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doldman (talk • contribs) 11:41, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required and it is a Commons guideline to sign your posts on deletion requests, undeletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion). Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ 11:55, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
Please send that text (or less wordwrapped text from our release generator) via OTRS.   — Jeff G. ツ 11:55, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

Keep in mind, though: it is very rare when the subject of the photo holds the copyright. Copyright resides originally with the photographer, and is only transferred via contract, will, etc. So typically you need the permission of the photographer, not the subject of the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 01:11, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for this. I will ask the people concerned to send the release in. However, do they attach the image? If not how is the release connected to the image? Do they just say, the image attached to my profile and then give the page reference? Doldman (talk) 12:52, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

  • If the image is already on line, they can just refer to it by URL. Or (I believe, but someone may want to correct me) they can attach a thumbnail and indicate that you will be uploading a higher-resolution version. - Jmabel ! talk 15:30, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

Duplicate images in the Commons

There are two images of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with Prince Philip which are used quite heavily on multiple wikis: Elizabeth and Philip 1953.jpg and Elizabeth_II_%26_Philip_after_Coronation.JPG. One is marginally better quality than the other, but nothing outstanding and the metadata on both is accurate and points back to the right institutional source. Is there a pain-free way of merging these two images into one or is this a hopeless situation?

For reference what appears to be the relevant licence is here. It prohibits sub-licensing, unauthorized distribution, & offering for download, all of which I think are problematic on Commons. In general I don’t think we can presume to choose a licence for content owned by others, even if the terms under which they offer it are equivalent.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 21:38, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

How can I delete a (my) photo (due to an error)?

I had uploaded a photo today and mis-labeled it as the Duomo in Florence, when it is the Duomo in Siena.

Florence Cathedral interior

How can I get it deleted so I can upload the photo again with the correct info? Thanks, Peter K Burian, Wikipedia User — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peter K Burian (talk • contribs) 15:27, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

@Peter K Burian: There's no need to delete the image. It should be renamed instead, see Commons:File renaming#How to rename a file? Since we already have many files of the cathedral's interior, try to find a name that describes more precisely which part of the church we see here. --Sitacuisses (talk) 18:50, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

question about "public domain" pictures/images

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hello. I was wondering about the rules that apply to uploading images/photographs to Wikipedia. Of course there are many rules that Wikipedia follows... to protect the copyright of images (and to protect the person who originally took the photograph / first created the image). These are good and important rules to follow.

I think that I know the answer to my question, but I just wanted to make sure. If a person is not the creator (is not the original photographer) of an image... is it still O.K. to upload an image to Wikipedia... as long as the image is "Public Domain"?

Thanks for answering my question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aikidan (talk • contribs) 22:19, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

That's perfectly fine. We have several million (that's not a typo) files that are in the public domain, and only about 1.2 million of them were uploaded by their creators. However, you need to demonstrate why the file is in the public domain, both in the US (for legal reasons: that's where our servers are) and in the country where the file came from. If you have a more specific question, please ask it, and someone can give you a more specific answer. Nyttend (talk) 00:31, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Date of Image

Hello there, I am trying to upload an image using the upload wizard. The upload wizard states I need to put the date it was first created or published but I don't happen to know the date because it is a logo of an organization. What can I do?

Thanks in advance! — Mason 39 (talk) 06:10, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Mason_39

Try to provide the most accurate information possible. If you can't identify the exact date that the logo was adopted, you could use something like {{other date|between|1999|2000}}, {{other date|after|1999}}, {{other date|circa|1999}} or {{other date|decade|1990}}. If you really can't find out anything about when the logo was adopted, use {{other date|unknown}}. LX (talk, contribs) 10:08, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

How to upload an image of a person in an existing article

Hi, I edited an article and I found that the image was missing, I read that we need permission, I contacted the guy and finally, he replied with his picture that he is happy to upload. Please guide me how to upload it. HeatherMPinchbeck (talk) 09:53, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

What we need is a permission from the copyright holder (typically the photographer rather than the person being depicted) to publish the photo under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the photo for any purpose, including commercial purposes. See Commons:OTRS for how to obtain and submit an appropriate permission statement. After that, the actual uploading is done through the Upload Wizard. LX (talk, contribs) 10:18, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, this goes same for the article? I want to upload it to one of the articles, I have the permission of the person. Should I first upload it here? then link to that article? Or should I upload to article directly.? I entered a file name in the infobox and then by clicking on the red link move to an upload wizard. I don't know if that process is right. Or is I upload to common how would I upload in the article? HeatherMPinchbeck (talk) 10:55, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Commons itself doesn't have articles, and articles aren't usually something that you "upload". Are you talking about writing an article in the English-language Wikipedia (given that you are writing in English), or somewhere else? - Jmabel ! talk 14:46, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

I write articles and update existing in English Wikipedia. I want to upload a picture in that article. HeatherMPinchbeck (talk) 16:16, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Once the picture is uploaded on COmmons, you include it by something like [[:File:Some name.jpg|thumb|caption]] or by referring to the filename as a parameter of an infobox. That side of it is done on Wikipedia, typically after the image is uploaded here to Commons. But the remains that it can only go on Commons with the relevant permission, which usually has to come from the photographer unless copyrights have been legally transferred (which is rare), and which needs to go through the process described at COM:OTRS.
  • Again, I have no idea what you mean by "uploading an image to the article directly": the WYSIWIG UI may be giving you the impression that you are doing that, but underneath, that's not what is happening. - Jmabel ! talk 23:19, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Firstly, you can't upload anything without being logged in. Secondly, I don't think anyone is going to be able to help you unless you provide a little more information about which page or app you're using to upload and what type of phone you're using. It may be easiest to transfer the files to a computer before uploading, as mobile phones are typically not well suited to creating useful file descriptions. Zurich again, German images following 1923

So... looking at File:ETH-BIB-Birkigt, Marc (1878-1953)-Portrait-Portr 03330.tif, it says that it's in the PD in Germany, and no indication that the author owns any copyright, just that... well, it's old and its in their archive. So if it's PD in the US I really don't know that I can exactly say why, and if this is actually a problem, it's likely a problem for a large amount of images, because I don't believe any of the Zurich photos include copyright tags for the US and they're apparently not being vetted for date of publication.

Suggestions? TimothyJosephWood 13:16, 3 June 2017 (UTC)

And another File:ETH-BIB-Volkart, Albert (1873-1951)-Portrait-Portr 02828.tif. TimothyJosephWood 15:20, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Do you mix up Germany with Switzerland? For Swiss copyright rules see Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Switzerland. Reading this both files you linked are clean for me. Speravir, I guess my issue was taking it was first published outside the United States (and not published in the U.S. within 30 days), as something that could be assumed in the absence of evidence, rather than actually needing to find the first time it was published in the US to substantiate the claim.
And yes, I should have said Switzerland. A lot of these people are German, but the source for the images is definitely Swiss. TimothyJosephWood 14:35, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Links to contributions pages

Is there some way to get a list of links to user contributions (i.e. Special:Contributions/A, Special:Contributions/Q, Special:Contributions/Z, etc.) such that the link appears one way if the account has contributions and another way if it doesn't? This is possible with Special:Listusers, since the "contribs" link is red or blue respectively, but that provides an alphabetical list, while the accounts I'd like to check are all over the place alphabetically. This is not possible with a normal link to Special:Contributions, since that's always blue, even if you link to a nonexistent account: see Special:Contributions/Randomtypinggibberishfbesugbrosubgrou. I'm interested in checking the contributions of 800+ accounts, so I'd rather not check them all manually. Nyttend (talk) 01:28, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

Geotagging

Hello everyone, I was uploading some photos with another user and I just discovered that my phone has a fantastic feature that is turned on by default: geotagging. I would dearly desire to have that information removed from the images, and I was thinking maybe there is a way to delete that info permanently and non transparent to the users (so they can't access the geotagging info by looking in the history of the file)? Or maybe I can use a feature like the right to vanish in order to have my username removed from the photos?

I know it was my fault to upload photos containing geotagging info but I think such an error is pretty much expectable these days, so I don't find it exaggerated to implement a solution.

Thanks in advance for all the answers. Scaize2017 (talk) 04:37, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

Crown Copyright

Help, I'm confused!

It would seem from info I see on Wikimedia that photos from WW1 created by or for the War Office are no longer in copyright, e.g.: File:60_pounder_gun_advancing_in_Flanders_22-09-1918_IWM_Q_6996.jpg

I see, however, that the Imperial War Museum still seems to apply a non-commercial license to its photos: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205216469

and yet many of these are a hosted on Wikimedia.

I uploaded a small detail of a trench map (taken from a large file downloaded from McMaster University), but it has been rejected by Wikimedia. The McMaster license is essentially the same as that applied by I.W.M. as far as I can see. Surely, either this map AND the I.W.M. photos are acceptable on Wikimedia, or none of them are, since they were created at the same time for official government purposes?

DaveDaveleicuk (talk) 10:07, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

They are public domain as the Crown Copyright has expired (50 years after publication). The IWM is actively committing copyfraud, as despite the legal nonsense of their claims of copyright being pointed out to them over several years, they have yet to correct a single image on their site, even those where the original copyright was the United States military or other foreign powers. Sadly, many writers and academics have paid them significant sums of money for meaningless copyright releases over this time, when the only payment they should have legitimately been asked for would be reproduction fees. Frankly, it's an embarrassment. Refer to User:Fæ/email/IWM.
You would have to provide a link to the McMaster image, without seeing it I have no idea if it should be public domain or not. Derived works, such as redrawn maps, may have copyright if the derivation introduced sufficient new creative content. -- (talk) 11:06, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Fae, this is illuminating. The map is here:

http://digitalarchive.mcmaster.ca/islandora/object/macrepo%3A4247

I uploaded just a small crop of the area with the canal in the top right corner, just 1600px max dimension, to add to the Wikipedia article I'm currently editing.

DaveDaveleicuk (talk) 11:26, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

The full map is now at File:Maissemy, WW1 map.tif. Feel free to create derivatives linking back to the full image. If anyone believes I'm wrong, they should create a deletion request and state the case. Thanks -- (talk) 12:53, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

Copyright License from Number Ten Architectural Group for ten photos - not acknowledged by Wikimedia

original request
Please help me. On April 18, 2017, the creator and copyright holder for ten photos of public buildings - Number Ten Architectural Group - emailed a Creative Commons License to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. I uploaded the ten photos yesterday and used them on a Wikipedia page concerning Isadore (Issie) Coop.

All ten photos have now been tagged for removal on the basis that they don't have a copyright permission.

I received emails from one OTRS person yesterday concerning most of the photos, and following the link he provided, he requested proof of License for each photo. I re-emailed the original email and License to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org yesterday.

Here are nine of the ten photos:

In addition, yesterday and today, I posted the following explanation on my User Talk page in respect of each photo:

"On April 18, 2017, a signed Creative Commons License covering this photo was submitted to 'permissions-commons@wikimedia.org' by the Copyright Holder, Number Ten Architectural Group. I have re-emailed the Copyright Holder's email and license to you today. Please remove the tag. --Jack Coop (talk) 04:14, 7 June 2017 (UTC)"

Today I saw that another OTRS person, Arthur Crbz, posted a template on the File pages for each of the nine photos explaining why they were rejected. So I started the following chat on Arthur's talk page:

"Hi, Arthur, you added a template to nine (9) of photos from Number Ten Architectural Group, which I uploaded to Wikimedia yesterday. In the Permission Summary, it says: An email has been received at OTRS concerning this file, and can be read here by users with an OTRS account. However, the message was not sufficient to confirm permission for this file. This may, among other reasons, be because there was no explicit release under a free license, or the email address that the permission came from is not associated with the location where the content was originally published. For an update on the issue, please contact the user (Arthur Crbz) who added this template to the page, or someone else with an OTRS account, or the OTRS noticeboard. If a valid permission is not provided within 30 days of the first response by an OTRS volunteer, this file will be deleted. Please do not file an additional deletion nomination for permission reasons. Note to OTRS volunteers: If the email contains sufficient confirmation of the validity of the license, please replace this template with...

A tenth photo from Number Ten Architectural Group has been accepted by Wikimedia as licensed: File:Winnipeg Convention Centre, 1974.jpg (I now see that this photo has just been tagged.)

My problem is that the creator of all ten Number Ten photos - Number Ten Architectural Group, sent a signed Wikipedia Creative Commons License releasing copyright for all ten photos, to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org on April 18, 2017. The license clearly followed, verbatim, the template for such a license as published by Wikimedia. It was signed by a duly authorized representative of Number Ten, Doug Hanna, who is partner of the partnership. So there was an "explicit release under a free license" given, contrary to your template statement, the above. Also, the email from Mr. Hanna came from his work email address, so the statement that the "email address that the permission came from is not associated with the location where the content was originally published", is wrong.

I re-emailed Mr. Hanna's email and the Creative Commons License he signed to Wikimedia yesterday, because the OTRS rep who tagged the nine photos for removal said, in numerous emails to me, that proof of the license had to be sent. But, clearly, the original email and license was originally sent from a Number Ten Architectural Group email address.

Can you please let me know what the real problem is? Did Wikimedia fail to process the original Creative Commons License sent by Mr. Hanna on April 18? Or is it just a problem of correlating that original correspondence/license to the photos that I uploaded yesterday? Please let me know.

It has been an unbelieveable hassle getting Wikimedia to acknowledge copyright licenses for this website. Any help you can provide would be appreciated."

I would ask you for the same assistance I requested from Arthur - an explanation as to why the ten Number Ten photos were tagged/rejected, and what do I have to do to get them accepted?--Jack Coop (talk) 15:20, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

@Keahapana: That looks to me like you are trying to upload an SVG file that has an embedded raster graphic (png) and all those characters are a base64-encoding of the binary data making up that raster file. Did you copy an external graphics file into Inkscape? If that was a raster graphics file (png, jpg ...) just saving it as SVG will not automagically turn it into vector graphics. You have to redraw the the character as true vector data in Inkscape (automatic vectorization is another option but usually doesn't work very well) and remove the raster image afterwards. Hope that helps? --El Grafo (talk) 07:46, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
@El Grafo: Thank you very much for your quick reply. I'll ask a friend who's familiar with graphics software to help me. Best wishes, Keahapana (talk) 02:59, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

良質な画像で賛成を得ている画像がプロモーションすることなく候補から削除されてしまいました

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Quality_images_candidates/Archives_June_07_2017

--Ocdp (talk) 10:10, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:ChessTodayFrontPage.png

I've uploaded a low res screenshot of the front page of a magazine similar to others I've seen on wikipedia and wikimedia commons. I'm not sure how to do the licencing for this. I tried putting a magazine cover tag in but it didn't work correctly. Any help would be appreiciated. Sorry I've not been able to figure out how to do this myself. Thanks again.

I've used it on the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Today

Hi Marcel! If I understand your question correctly, you want to edit the file description of File:Williams falls, located in Mount Carleton Provincial Park - Chute du Williams , situé dans le parc provincial Mont Carleton.jpg. If so, just go to that file and press "edit" at the top of the page.
I don't have access to your e-mail, so I can't comment on that, if you mean the message on your user talk page, just click the "edit" link next to the subject line and respond there. If you want to make sure Amqui gets notified of your response, just include a link to their user page in your comment ([[User:Amqui]]) and be sure to sign your message with four tilde characters (~). Using Wikimedia image in my book

Hi, May I use the image at [ By Jeff Dahl, GFDL, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=3606080 ] in my book and what statement do I need to put with the image to be legal? Thank you. Daryl Simmons — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 148.168.40.123 (talk) 18:43, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Please see Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia, and ask again if you have any more specific questions after that. For this file, you have a choice of licenses; the easiest and most up to date choice would be https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/legalcode; I'd recommend reading that as well. Copyright help regarding Niall Horan, Today Show, May 2017.png

I was given permission by the owner of this image to upload it on Wikipedia. They have also uploaded this image on Twitter for anyone to use, the image isn't copyrighted. What license do I choose when trying to upload it? --Cather2021 (talk) 22:10, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

  • There is not (and has never been) a Niall Horan, Today Show, May 2017.png or (more likely) File:Niall Horan, Today Show, May 2017.png, so I don't know what file you are talking about.
  • You say there is an "owner" but it "isn't copyrighted." That makes no sense.
  • The image is almost certainly copyrighted (barring that it was, for example, taken by a U.S. government employee in the performance of their official duties. And we need an explicit license from the copyright holder. "Permission to upload on Wikipedia" is not enough. We need a specific free license. Given that this is a third-party image, please see COM:OTRS for how that license must be confirmed. - Jmabel ! talk 23:52, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

Correcting mirror images

the image "http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d0/%22General_Bernard_L._Montgomery_watches_his_tanks_move_up.%22_-_NARA_-_535938.jpg" is a photo reversed, probably sourced from the back of the negative.

The tells are that the Vickers Mk4 tank on the Royal Tank Regiment badge is pointing in the wrong direction and that under British Army dress codes the Corps Badge is worn above the Left eye and the beret pulled down to the right side.

There are numerous images of Field Marshal Sir Bernard Montgomery with this problem in circulation, but that is no reason to continue to perpetrate the error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.20.89.213 (talk • contribs)

I've added links on the file description to the three correctly mirrored versions that we also have. LX (talk, contribs) 05:57, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

User:Hedwig in Washington, well, the image was deleted as a COPYVIO by User:Daphne Lantier. But... if it was a COPYVIO then so are these and so is the original. I mean, I could have certainly slapped on a PD-old-auto-1996 and called it a day. I brought this up above and didn't get a response, but I don't know if it was published in the US or when (part of the requirement for the tag). Actually, I don't know if it was ever published. This could be the first time it's been pulled out of a box, so as I understand it, even though ETH physically has the image, it could still be owned by an estate or something.
Or maybe I'm just over thinking it. Not being bold is a hard thing to get used to. TimothyJosephWood 12:22, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
@Timothyjosephwood and Hedwig in Washington: I only deleted File:ETH-BIB-Volkart, Albert (1873-1951)-Portrait-Portr 02828.tif (cropped).jpg because it had no license. If there's a proper license for it than Hedwig can restore it, or you can post here and I'll restore it for you and you can add the license. Daphne Lantier 18:27, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
I'm more interested in the license than the image really. The one above is virtually if not literally identical. TimothyJosephWood 18:30, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
Thought you just wanted to crop the image from tiff, which doesn't work. Given the signature below the photograph and the whole photograph setting/compilation, I don't have any doubt that the photograph has been published shortly after creation. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:14, 10 June 2017 (UTC)

Thank you.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:05, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

  • @Tony Hudson: If you mean File:Universal English Language Governing Authority.png, the ".png" extension or another extension has to be there to indicate the type of file in our system. Also, that page is rather crufty, and that image is too decorated. So you want to rule English? The British tried that, look what happened to the British Empire. I suggest you look at your own house first, reducing the use of capital letters where they don't belong and not starting paragraphs of wikitext with spaces. Your boomerang is back, now your file is up for deletion.   — Jeff G. ツ 01:05, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
JFTR I don’t think there has ever been an official standard applied to the English language generally, or any body comparable to the Académie française. Nor am I aware of any efforts by the British Empire to suppress the development of national variants in the former colonies—which is not to deny the role of language in making class distinctions, but it’s a far cry from having a “governing authority”. (The capital-letter thing seems to me an affectation emulating an XVIII–XIX c. style.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:12, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

The name there is quite similar to the uploader’s username, which would seem to accord with the “own work“ sourcing. Do you have some reason to suppose the uploader is not the author? An assertion of copyright is perfectly compatible with a free licence, as long as it doesn’t contradict it: read it as a claim that the person or institution named has the right to issue a licence. We generally accept such claims unless there’s reason to doubt them, and at any rate only obvious copyvios qualify for speedy deletion; if you have only suspicions you should nominate the file for discussion at COM:DEL. That said, for future reference, if you don’t see a “Report copyright violation” link on File pages in the left sidebar under Tools, go to your preferences and turn on the QuickDelete Gadget: it adds the SD tag and notifies the uploader automatically.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:30, 11 June 2017 (UTC)

Currently there are over 5,000 files which are CC-BY-SA. Refer to User:Fæ/Projects/Xeno-canto for a previous batch upload project and a link to the source code. I have vague plans to update the project. It relied on a ogg audio conversion that only works on Windows, but in the process added lots of useful header data to the file; converting to work on a Mac is the technical bit that will eat up my volunteer time. -- (talk) 11:26, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

landscape designs

Back in 2002 while I was a Masters' student at Chatham University, I discovered some forgotten landscape designs by noted landscape architect Rose Greeley in the attic of Hartwood Acres mansion - now known as Hartwood Acres Park. Also in the forgotten bundle were plans contributed by Pittsburgh landscape architect, Ralph Griswold, who was the architect for The Point at Pittsburgh and designed the layout of roads and buildings at Hartwood. And finally, in the bundle was an elevation drawn by landscape architect Ezra Stiles for Hemlock Court, which was a planned promenade with some of his noted stonework, to be built next to the Rose Cutting Garden by Rose Greeley.

Mary Flinn Lawrence, who hired these designers, never completed the designs because of the outbreak of WWII.

I would like to contribute those images and my thesis in each of those sections (Hartwood Acres, Greeley, Griswold, Stiles and perhaps Mary Flinn Lawrence) but I am not sure how to go about it. I have images of the designs by Greeley, Stiles & Griswold, and my own rendering of what Greeley's Rose Garden design would have looked like. These items are in the public domain, as I gave a bound copy to Pittsburgh Parks, National Parks Historic Landscape Initiative in Washington DC, and one to Chatham University, where I was a Masters' candidate.

The whole thesis makes most sense when taken as a whole, which is why I would like to contribute the whole thing rather than the images and brief explanations, piecemeal. But I will follow whatever you suggest. I can see how I mighht do it piecemeal -- but frankly, your upload process has me a bit stymied!

Thank you, Eloise D. Morano Elfiefeather (talk) 19:08, 13 June 2017 (UTC) (Login Elfiefeather)

I think the copyright issues need to be sorted out first.
I believe you are probably wrong about your thesis being in the public domain. The fact of who you gave copies to seems to me to be completely irrelevant to its copyright status. If you have some reason to think it would be in the public domain, though, please do explain.
The fact that you seem confused about the copyright status of your own thesis makes me wonder whether you are correct about the images in question being in the public domain. They might be (e.g. if they were published in the U.S. at the time without copyright notice) but that's not obvious to me.
These sound like good images to get out there, so I'll gladly work with you on this, but we need to have the rights clear. - Jmabel ! talk 22:57, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

  • This is not Wikipedia, this is Wikimedia Commons.
  • I'm guessing that you mean that you are trying to create Wikipedia page in the English-language Wikipedia for another company, like the pages for Google, Microsoft or Ebay. See en:Wikipedia:Your first article.
  • If the company is as notable as Google, Microsoft or Ebay, it almost certainly already has an article. If it is slightly less notable, you will need to demonstrating its notability by citing independent sources that write about it. If it is not particularly notable, this does not belong in Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

@ArminHP: Usually, the selfies cannot be uploaded because of copyright. The pictures taken by unknown author can be uploaded only when its copyright has expired. Some of https://www.flickr.com/photos/7552532@N07/sets/72157611389613008 are not even the user's own work, so he/she would have no right to release them.
The others are the respective users' own work, but are licensed non-commercial only, and in some cases "no derivatives", so they are not acceptable for Commons. You might get a user to agree to release one or more of the photos under a sufficiently free license such as CC-BY-SA, but that would be the only way we could accept these. - Jmabel ! talk 15:12, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

Can I upload Photos in Google images?

This is nth time I am raising this question on talk pages wikipedia but to no avail. Can I use images of uniformed forces available in Google images? They are not copy right protected according to my understanding as an academic as I used them for my academic write ups several times without rising any question of copy right violations. Please clarify. CSHN Murthy (talk) 08:48, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

There is no answer to this question since "Google images" doesn't host images, it's just an image search. If the images are usable on Commons has to be checked for each image. --Magnus (talk) 09:14, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
In other words: When you click on a image in the search results of the Google image search, there should be a button saying "visit page". That is the page you need to list as a source when uploading and image (assuming the image's license is conforming to Commons:Licensing). Whether you found an image via Google, Bing or Yahoo is totally irrelevant. Please note that we have some restrictions on what images can be used that differ from common practice in academia (again, see Commons:Licensing). If would probably help if you could link to some example images, so somebody can tell you whether we'd accept these images and why. --El Grafo (talk) 10:09, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
It looks like this question is about File:N Samba Siva Rao DGP.jpg, which was deleted as a copyright violation.
CSHN Murthy: Based on what I can see from Google's cached copy of the file description, you claimed that the file was your own work, that you were the author and copyright holder, and that you were publishing the file under a free Creative Commons license. On your user talk page, you have now acknowledged that in reality, you simply grabbed the file from a Google Image search.
"Own work" means something that you personally created entirely on your own. Finding a file on the Internet does not make something your own work. "Author" is the person who has created a work. In the case of a photograph of a person, the author is the photographer. Finding a file on the Internet does not make you the author. The "copyright holder" is the person with the right to decide how a work may be used. This also means that the copyright holder is the only one who can issue a valid copyright license. Normally, the author is the copyright holder. Finding a file on the Internet does not make you the copyright holder. Finding a file on the Internet does not mean you can make up licensing claims on behalf of the legitimate copyright holder.
Please note that making false claims about the authorship or licensing of copyrighted works constitutes copyright infringement and is not only against Commons' policy but also a criminal offense. As already explained, whether or not you have been sued for other activities in other contexts is irrelevant here. Do not upload files that you found on the Internet unless they are actually in the public domain or covered by a free license; most of the content you find on the Internet is copyrighted and non-free. Never upload other people's works claiming that you created them yourself.
The assumption that you make on your user talk page that Google Images is a "free image provider" is completely incorrect. The assumption that you make above that no images of uniformed forces found through Google Images are protected by copyright is completely incorrect.
Please read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. LX (talk, contribs) 10:45, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Copyrighting and upload of photographs.

Hi,

Can bought newspapers be copyrighted ? Can I upload a photograph that I took of those newspapers on Wikimedia Commons ? I am in possession of free given performance leaflets and programs. Can I upload a photo of these leaflets on Wikimedia Commons to complete my Wikipedia article?

Many Thanks,

--Les Yeux Noirs (talk) 12:47, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

@Les Yeux Noirs: Not without the permission of the copyright holders. Please re-read COM:L and COM:PSS.   — Jeff G. ツ 12:57, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G: Thank you for your answer.

If I took a photograph of a newspaper article that I bought, am I the copyright holder of the image or is the copyright hoder of the newspaper the copyright holder of the photograph that I took, even though I am the author of the image itself?

Many Thanks and Kind Regards,

--Les Yeux Noirs (talk) 13:20, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

@Les Yeux Noirs: You would have copyright to your photo, but it would be unlicensed derivative work of the newspaper publisher, which would be a copyrighted licensed compilation of the copyrighted paid work for hire or contracted work of the newspaper's copywriters, editors, photographers, wire services, etc., and you would not be allowed to upload it here.   — Jeff G. ツ 15:04, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
  • The photo you took, if uncreative (the equivalent of photocopying the newspaper) creates no new copyright at all. If creative (e.g. combining the newspaper with something else) it is a derivative work, which would require licenses from both you and the original copyright-holder of the newspaper. You buying the newspaper does not enter the matter: no transfer of intellectual property rights is involved. In fact, even in buying a unique painting, no transfer of intellectual property rights is normally involved. - Jmabel ! talk 15:06, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

Can somebody please help me?

Everytime I upload a picture I get told it might be deleted. I have uploaded 2 free images (one image was my own) where both have been deleted.

I have no idea how to upload an image!! Even with difficult instructions it doesn't help!

Please help me..... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Natalie93 (talk • contribs)

  • For your one image that is currently on here, File:Ava-sambora-january-2017.jpg, you list Ava Sambora herself as the source and author. The subject is unlikely to be the copyright-holder (that would normally be the photographer), but you credit the subject as the author and source. Even if this is, indeed, her self-portrait, it is a photograph taken by someone other than you, and you need either to show it has already been published by its author with an appropriate free license or you need that author to grant an appropriate free license (such as the CC-BY-SA you claim) via the COM:OTRS process. You can't offer a license to use something you don't own and there is no reason to think you own the copyright to this photo.
  • If you think other cases were significantly different, please indicate which cases were. The only deleted images that you uploaded that I can find are File:Claire Guerreso Heavy.jpg and File:Claire Guerreso As Is.jpg. - Jmabel ! talk 16:14, 17 June 2017 (UTC)

Greetings!

I am not sure which licence I should provide for the file. A pilot named Valeri Shopov took this photo and shared it in his Facebook profile. From the information I have, he then shared it to some news websites. I saw the photo in one of them. I wrote an email to the website team asking them for permission to upload the image to Wikipedia, and they granted me. But now I do not know which licence I should put, should I ask the website team again? I have included the author's name and the source (the news website).

--Divpatok (talk) 11:32, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

You can't choose a license on behalf of the copyright holder. If they didn't specify a copyright license, it isn't covered by a free license, and you shouldn't have uploaded it. Wikimedia Commons only hosts content that is free for anyone to use for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Permissions that only cover uploading to Wikipedia are do not meet our requirements. Please follow these instructions to obtain and submit a proper permission. Scanning my father's slides and negatives from the 1940's-1970's

Hi everyone,

My father just passed away

http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/chicagotribune/obituary.aspx?pid=185797728

and my family decided that we should create a fundraiser to digitize all his photography and release it under cc-by-sa 4.0:

https://www.gofundme.com/remember-my-dad-through-his-photos

He was a professional photographer from the 1940s-1970's and none of his work has been digitized. Is there a place on commons for crowd-funding efforts like this?

Thanks!

Victorgrigas (talk) 17:31, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi,
This would be interesting. No crowdfunding on Commons, but you could request a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation (see m:Grants:IEG), or a local chapter/user group. Please send a permission via COM:OTRS to confirm the license when you upload the files. Regards, Yann (talk) 17:34, 18 June 2017 (UTC)

Images from other Wikipedia

How to uploading images from other Wikipedias? WaseCatro-Y (talk) 10:36, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

  1. Make sure the file you're looking at isn't already on Commons. Look for something like this near the top of the file description.
  2. Make sure there isn't a duplicate or better version here already. Search for appropriate terms.
  3. Make sure the file meets our licensing requirements. There really isn't a reason for projects to host free content locally, so apart from files uploaded before Commons was established, most of the locally hosted content can't be uploaded here.
  4. Download the full-resolution version of the file to your computer and follow the Upload Wizard's instructions. Be sure to preserve the source, authorship and licensing information from the old file description.
  5. Mark the locally hosted file for deletion. Procedures and policies for this depend on which specific Wikipedia project you are moving files from.

Image attributed to me in Pravda website

I found a photo attributed to me on a Pravda website and don't recognize it as one I've placed in Wikimedia Commons. Although I've been to Paris in the past and may have taken this photo, it is not listed in my Wikimedia Commons contributions. Can you enlighten me about how this photo is or is not correctly attributed to me? Here is what I copied from the site: "Paris inferno: Molotof cocktail lobbed into restaurant - PravdaReport www.pravdareport.com/news/hotspots/12-06.../137971-paris_inferno-0/ Jun 9, 2017 - ... a robbery gone wrong. Photo: By Mitzi.humphrey - Own work, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=58327080 ..."

Thank you for any help with this issue.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 16:09, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

I checked again, and the image link given above for the caption in the article is not to the photo that appears to be identified as mine in the article. The article appears to be using a different image from the one that is being cited. I would upload a capture of the image here, but according to the copyright instructions should not do that here unless I am sure that I am the photographer of the image. I'd like to set this straight.Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 16:25, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi Mitzi.humphrey! So you're talking about this article which has this photo but a photo credit that points to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=58327080, which is File:Arc de triomphe 1989.png, which you did upload, but it's not the photo they're using (at least not at the moment). The photo they're actually using is en:File:Pompidou center.jpg by en:User:Leland. Maybe they changed the photo and just neglected to update the byline? LX (talk, contribs) 16:31, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
Thank you,LX (talk, contribs) I finally figured that out by going to Wikipedia articles on both Le Centre Pompidou and the Arc de triomphe, neither of which photos seems appropriate to illustrate an article on a restaurant inferno. They are appropriate for illustrating the city of Paris in general, but not for this news. Thank you for confirming the mixup. -- Mitzi.humphrey (talk) 16:48, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
No worries. For future reference, dragging and dropping the image into https://images.google.com is usually the fastest way to find the real source. It looks like Leland isn't active anymore and they don't have an e-mail address registered, so there's probably no use trying to let them know, but it'd be a good idea to let Pravda know about their mixup. Goat breed

Hi everyone! I'd like to upload a photo of a Greek goat breed, found in the Greek Ministry of Agriculture website but there's no statement about the copyrights. What should I do? Thanks in advance. -GeoTrou (talk) 15:54, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Nowadays, under the Berne Convention, virtually everything is copyrighted by default, so if there is no statement you generally have to assume that it is "all rights reserved." While Greek law exempts laws, decrees, administrative decisions and circulars, proceedings and decisions of courts of justice etc. from copyright, photos do not appear to fall under that exemption even if they are produced by the government. So I'm afraid that image would not be suitable for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 19:56, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Hi

Could someone tell me why this thumbnail is broken? We want to use the image for an online exhibition so having it working would be very very helpful.

--John Cummings (talk) 09:46, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

I purged the cache, and it seems to be working now. LX (talk, contribs) 09:52, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
It doesn’t work for me either, so purging did not help. I assume it’s because of some weird embedded colour profile, because I downloaded the file and opened it locally only to notice, that I could not open it in GIMP, the error message tells me, that the image is in 16 Bit colour depth, but GIMP is only able to open 8 Bit. GIMP wants to convert, but fails, because there is no RGBA loader. In IrfanView I got a negative colour image, but after conversion it looked still quite strange. But I could this open in GIMP and apply some automatic fixes. Now the file looks better, though not perfect, size is about 10 MB, cf. [http://abload.de/image.php?img=the_italian_carabinienou2w.jpg Image: the_italian_carabinienou2w.jpg - abload.de] (the image will be removed eventually, so the link will be dead then done). Should I upload this? Note, my initial intention was to use the template {{LargeTIFF}}, with which by default you point to a JPEG file with the same name. And, John, apart from all this you seem to have given the wrong source link. — Speravir – 03:08, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
I've corrected the source. I think the main problem with the file is the CMYK colorspace. Running it through ImageMagick's convert with -colorspace sRGB seems to produce a much more manageable image. Unfortunately, I can't upload it as a new version, because it is 151.2 MB and the maximum file size of Special:Upload is 100 MB. LX (talk, contribs) 08:05, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks all, I fixed the colour profile and uploaded a low res version, if anyone knows how to upload files more that 100mb please let me know. --John Cummings (talk) 09:16, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
You should be able to upload larger files with this tool. --Magnus (talk) 09:28, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
Yes, what Magnus writes. The tool was intenionally created for large files. But perhaps also the legacy upload form works, try it in Special:Upload. As stated in Commons:Maximum file size, which I pointed out above, Special:Upload has a 100 MB limit. As for the Upload Wizard, that cannot be used to overwrite existing files. LX (talk, contribs) 17:58, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

Quett Masire.

Hello there.

I do not know whether this is the correct platform for this kind of query, but I hope you will give it the attention it deserves.

Kindly note that my former President Sir. Quett Ketumile Masire of the Republic of Botswana passed on last night (23rd June 2017). May his soul rest in peace. In honoring his wonderful memory I decided to visit his Wikipedia page and I have to say that I was not pleased to see what I saw. Particularly this picture https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Quett_Masire_DF-SC-85-12045.JPEG which is clearly not his. This did not help my grief at all. I'm disappointed, please kindly remove and replace this image with a proper one. Our local newsgroups here can be of great help in this regard. I do not want to start arguing over the contents of his Wikipedia entry, but I'm willing to take you to task with regards to this particular picture.

I do not wish to start a riot over this, but I'm saving this message so as to keep sending it to you until you do right by this Great Son of African Soil.

Thank you very much in advance.

Looking at Category:Quett Masire, we have two photos taken at the same occasion where two different subjects are both identified as Quett Masire: File:Quett Masire DF-SC-85-12044.JPEG and File:Quett Masire DF-SC-85-12045.JPEG. The second one seems to be a misidentification on behalf of the US DoD curators, which also affects File:Quett Masire 1984-05-19.jpg. If the second subject could be identified, we can rename and correct the description. LX (talk, contribs) 09:40, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Video upload request: Pepper&Carrot (motion comic) - Episode 6: The Potion Contest

Is this okay to host the video here? But here is the problem at the closing credits. All original sources of soundtracks by Gregoire Lourme from Jamendo, showing under CC licenses disallows derivative as non-libre/non-free.  HarvettFox  96   19:46, 19 June 2017 (UTC)

  • If derivatives aren't allowed, then it can't be hosted here. You could imaginably post a modified version, with the sound removed, if nothing else has that issue. - Jmabel ! talk 23:08, 19 June 2017 (UTC)
Also, the positive ways to allow host a poster, a video cover thumbnail, and any frame screenshots are under CC BY-SA 4.0 license, but soundtracks aren't, right?  HarvettFox  96   08:00, 20 June 2017 (UTC)
But I missed one last thing, all sound effects (SFX) by attributors from Freesound, are under entire libre/free CC licenses with CC BY and CC0. See a blog post on Morevna Project for more details.  HarvettFox  96   12:23, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Categories with only one file

Hi. I had a discussion with an administrator regarding categories containing only one file. If there is a notable topic (Wikidata item and Wikipedia article) but there is only one relevant file on Commons, do Commons policies allow to create a category for this topic? Thanks — NickK (talk) 22:54, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Absolutely. Also OK if the category is part of a series (e.g. we can have City-by-year categories where we only have one image for a particular city in a particular year). But other than the circumstance you describe and the "part of a series" case, I can't offhand think of another case where a single file deserves a category; can anyone think of others? - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
My specific case was related to geographical categories: things like creating categories for villages of a given region or railway stations of a given line, with most having more than one file but some happening to have just one — NickK (talk) 23:30, 23 June 2017 (UTC)
When I did some cleanup work around Category:Stockholm, I made sure there was one category for every borough and one for every district. Because it's it's a well-defined set of entities, and it's obvious that we will eventually have content for every part of the city, I even created categories for a small number of districts with zero files, e.g. Category:Lunda and Category:Nälsta. As expected, they're populated today.
Categories relating to people are also often very useful even if there's only a single file, for example to allow categorization into Category:People by name. LX (talk, contribs) 08:56, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
LX: Your examples contain subcategories, and NickK means with category for only one image without any categories.--Anatoliy (talk) 23:01, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
Those subcategories were created some three years later. LX (talk, contribs) 23:17, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Downloading a photo from a twitter account

Can a profile photo from someone's public twitter be downloaded and used in Wikimedia Commons without first getting permission from the twitter user?Cllgbksr (talk) 18:16, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

No. --Magnus (talk) 18:55, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
If I get permission in the form of a return tweet from the twitter user - is that sufficient permission? Cllgbksr (talk) 18:58, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
How do you know that the user is the author of the photo? Ruslik (talk) 20:18, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
Only if the permission comes from the right person and identifies a specific free license. A permission to upload the file to Commons is not sufficient. The only one who can issue a valid license is the copyright holder. That's normally the photographer rather than the subject of a photograph. So unless the profile photo is a selfie, you should try to get the photographer to send in a licensing permission via e-mail instead. LX (talk, contribs) 20:21, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
I believe the profile photo is a selfie. I've seen journalists ask twitter users to direct message them so they can get permission to use their photo. So if it's a selfie and I get a DM msg with their permission - will that suffice? Cllgbksr (talk) 21:17, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
The issue is mainly to have clarity that they grant a specific license. It would probably suffice if they publicly tweet to the effect that (1) their profile picture is a selfie and (2) they are allowing their profile picture to be used under a specific named license (such as CC-BY SA). I don't see how anything short of that would be equivalent to the COM:OTRS process. - Jmabel ! talk 00:05, 25 June 2017 (UTC)
I would add that the specific license should also include a version number (CC-by-sa 4.0, for example) and that the message must be public so that others can verify it. (Private direct messages won't be useful.) LX (talk, contribs) 07:12, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

How can I upload a heraldic crest when I have the permission by the board? thx! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bendit (talk • contribs) 14:49, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Not sure what you mean by "permission by the board," but:
    • The blazon itself is typically not copyrightable.
    • For a particular rendering of a coat of arms, the copyright would originate with the artist who rendered the blazon, and could only be reassigned in the manner normal for transferring copyright in the particular country (usually limited to a written transfer of rights).
    • Presuming from your question that the "crest" is not yet in the public domain, and presuming that you are not the copyright-holder (the most likely way you would be the copyright-holder is if you are the artist who rendered the blazon), we need an explicit license from the copyright-holder. That cannot be just a vague "permission to use," it should be a specific license like CC-BY-SA 4.0. That license can be provided in either of two ways:
      • The copyright-holder can indicate the license on what is verifiably their own web site.
      • The copyright-holder can send an email as described at COM:OTRS.
  • Hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 16:48, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

trying to find out the status of Wikimedia ticket # 2017060910015069

I've been wondering about the status of these 24 photos copyright. I sent the permissions request to the copyright holder (Carolyn Dollar) and she said she emailed it with her approval to the permissions email address...but only got an automatic response that it was received. That was last week, so I am just checking to make sure it got to the right person. Arthur Crombez was who I have been communicating with on this project (Draft: Dennis Blalock). Just want to be sure it is not lost in the shuffle, or if there is more I need to do the get the license I need to proceed. Not trying to rush anything....I know it all takes time, but would appreciate an update of the status. thank you, Elisabet Stacy-Hurley (talk) 19:12, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

  • My apologies if I've misunderstood the Italian. (I'm triangulating from Spanish and Romanian.) I'm guessing that this is about File:Blackhole-paolo-pastorino.jpg, which was deleted. I'm also guessing that you are the same person who has the site http://www.paolopastorino.com/ceramiche where you previously posted this photo. That site says "Copyright © 2017 Pastorino Paolo" and gives no indication that you allow the cc-by-sa-4.0 license that you indicated on your upload.
  • There are two ways we can sort this out. The quickest is if you can add a statement on the site http://www.paolopastorino.com indicating the relevant license for this photo, then just link to it here and I can undelete the photo and link it to that to clarify permission. The other --slower, but you can do this if you would rather not modify the site-- is that you can send an email from your email address at paolopastorino.com indicating the permission, as described at Commons:OTRS/it. There is a backlog of over a month, but once processed your image would be undeleted. Or, rather than give a permission for an individual photo, you might could (either on that website or in an email to OTRS) indicate that the account User:PCMarket is you, and that the account therefore has permission to upload any of your copyrighted material in general. That would spare you similar issues in the future.
  • If that is unclear, please say so, and I can try to track down an Italian-speaker to translate my remarks. - Jmabel ! talk 23:34, 26 June 2017 (UTC)

Files - Please help

I do hope that I have got this "source" thing correct - I am very inexperienced with up-loading files. The following three images are photographed (SONY Experia) historic photos which were on display at Sutton Park, near York - the family home of Samantha Cameron, wife of ex- UK prime minister David Cameron.

  1. File:John_W._Middleton_Esq._of_Fairfield,_the_estate_in_Far_Headingley,_near_Leeds.jpg
  2. File:Olive_Middleton's_cousin,_Baroness_Airedale_at_1911_King_George_V's_coronation_1911.jpg
  3. File:Potternewton_Hall_Estate;_home_of_Olive_Middleton_(nee_Lupton)_and_her_cousin_Baroness_von_Schunck_(nee_Kate_Lupton).jpg

I have tried to track-down the SOURCE

  1. is my photo and the image appears in a newspaper article on-line. I have given the details.
  2. is my photo of an image taken (presumably in the House of Lords) by UK Government in 1911.
  3. is my photo of an image that was seen alongside numbers 1 and 2 at the historic display of photos at Sutton Park, near York UK.

What else can I do to help; I am sorry for being so "untechnical" - I am a history academic.

Please alter all 3 files if you are able.

Thanks Srbernadette 101.182.141.22 09:55, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

  • @Srbernadette: First one is fine, at least for source
  • I can't totally sort out the other two, though I took a step. It may help to know: photographing a 2-dimensional image (such as a photograph) does not create a new copyright/authorship, so you are not the author of these. The author would the original photographer, the date would be the date of the original photograph. The source is how you came by it. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Files - clarification needed please

1 File:Olive_Middleton's_cousin,_Baroness_Airedale_at_1911_King_George_V's_coronation_1911.jpg

2 File:Potternewton_Hall_Estate;_home_of_Olive_Middleton_(nee_Lupton)_and_her_cousin_Baroness_von_Schunck_(nee_Kate_Lupton).jpg

1 is my photo (SONY Experia) of an image taken (presumably in the House of Lords) by UK Government in 1911.

2 is my photo (SONY Experia) of an image that was seen alongside number 1 at an historic display of photos at Sutton Park, near York, UK.

I am hoping that I have put the correct info on these 2 files. Can you please confirm? Sorry for any trouble. 101.182.141.22 09:55, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

Are theses 2 files now OK?

  • Please, if you are continuing a discussion already in progress, use the same section! This is the second time I've had to move a section to keep this discussion together. Also, assuming you are the original uploader, it would be much clearer if you would log in when editing. - Jmabel ! talk 04:50, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
  • No, they are not OK. Assuming you are the same person as SBernadette -- I presume so, but can't be certain since you have not been logging in -- you still state that you are the author. But if the other statements there are true, you cannot be. Taking a picture of someone else's photograph no more makes you the author of the photograph than photocopying a book makes you the author of the book.
  • I take it the actual author is unknown. For a 1911 work, that could be a problem. If, for example, the photographer was 30 years old, and lived to be 90, then under the life+70 provision for copyright in the UK, the work could be in copyright for several more decades.
  • I know this is complicated and confusing. Yes, it is very frustrating that a lot of century-old work is still in copyright. Under our rules, we need to know it is now in the public domain in order to host it here without a license from a copyright-holder. An example of how we could know it was out of copyright is if we knew who took the photo, and that they died before 1947. - Jmabel ! talk 05:00, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Help re author of picture

Hi. I want to upload a picture that I believe is in the public domain since it was originally published in 1869, however, I am not sure who the author is. The picture is of Nancy Clem that can be found in this article and the picture was originally published in "The Cold Spring tragedy : trial and conviction of Mrs. Nancy E. Clem for the murder of Jacob Young and wife", Indianapolis, Ind. : A.C. Roach, 1869. When uploading a picture on commons, there is an author field that the uploader is required to fill, but I am not sure what to put in it. The picture has a signature that says "Chandler" and I suppose that is the author's name. Is it sufficient for me to put in the name "Chandler" in the author field? Thanks and sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm not familiar with this area. Bennv3771 (talk) 12:56, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

  • In these circumstances, yes. It's an engraving, so almost certainly published at the time, and would therefore be in the public domain independent of who the author is. Permission would be {{PD-US-1923}}. - Jmabel ! talk 13:37, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

  • For the most part, you can't. Most of those images would still be in copyright, except perhaps some of the older ones, which you could scan and upload. See Copyright law of Spain; I'm afraid the corresponding articles in Spanish and Catalan are pretty useless, being about the structure of the statutes and more or less ignoring their content. The key phrase is "In general, copyright protection in Spain lasts for the life of the author plus seventy years." - Jmabel ! talk 13:43, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

Retired electrician (talk) 19:08, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

I only know template {{Duplicate}}. If both are identical, keep the older one. if one has bigger resolution, keep this. If the later uploaded image has the better description, but should converted into a duplicate (technically it will be a redirect), copy it to the first uploaded file. But note: The images should be either fully identical or only differ in resolution! — Speravir – 23:42, 29 June 2017 (UTC)

Well, I think it's clear that both versions are correct. Antoni Maria Alcover i Sureda is the complete name while Antoni Maria Alcover is without the second surname. And it would be also correct to say just Antoni Maria, but it would be ambiguous, of course. That's the reason why "there's no consensus", because both versions are correct.
I moved the category because when I created the creator template, I read that "The name of the creator page should follow the most common version of the name used in English-language literature, and ideally should match the name of the corresponding category on Commons and the name of article in English Wikipedia." And I also talked about Catalan Wikipedia because Alcover was a Catalan linguist. Anyway, if the matching between the template, the category and the articles in English and Catalan Wikipedias is not that important, it can be left as it was at the beginning, if you prefer it that way. --Joan301009 (talk) 23:31, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
If the English & Catalan wikipedias use the same form of the name, and that has been stable for some time, then I think we should follow. Anyone disagree? - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
So, Jmabel, the Frze editions should be undone, if no one disagrees. --Joan301009 (talk) 21:52, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
