Morphy

I want to rename a file so that it is consistent with Wikipedia and relevant expert sources, however I am unable to follow the instructions for renaming.

The file is

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Garret_Morphey

It simply needs the "e" in Morphey deleted.

The artists correct name is Garret Morphy, Morphey is a mis-spelling found in one source. A full explanation of the name is given on the Wikipedia page, to which I have inserted a link from Wikimedia.

Thanks

Copyright help regarding File:Heed Their Rising Voices.jpg

I have uploaded an image from the U.S. National Archives, but I'm not sure what the license is. The image is called "Heed Their Rising Voices". The source url for the image is https://research.archives.gov/id/2641477. --Mitchumch (talk) 05:21, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

It is a work of the U.S. Government, so it is in the public domain. Thanks for asking here. Poké95 06:14, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Pokéfan95, do you have any evidence whatsoever to back up your claim that the Committee to Defend Martin Luther King was a part of the US Federal Government, or are you just making things up right now? LX (talk, contribs) 08:29, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
...ok... I just thought it was part of the U.S. Federal Government because of the author field. Since I really don't know (and COM:PCP), I reverted my edit. I am sorry if I am wrong. I gotta be careful with that next time. Poké95 12:25, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Template produces loop error

Template:PD-user-w produces an error. ("This work has been released into the public domain by its author, ... at the German Template loop detected: Template:Autotranslate project. This applies worldwide.") Example: File:Evangelische kirche goch4.JPG, but also the examples in the template description page itself. Hence I think it's a mistake in the template. --WolfD59 (talk) 11:12, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

any template for distinguishing Commons itself from a mirror?

I'd like a standard way to say on a userspace page something like, "This is not an essay. If you find this page on any site other than ... [Commons], you are viewing a mirror site. Be aware that the page may be outdated and that the user to whom this page belongs may have no personal affiliation with any site other than ... [Commons] itself. The original page is located at ... [URL]." Such a template is in English Wikipedia. Is there one for this in Commons? Nick Levinson (talk) 05:58, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

@Nick Levinson: The template you are finding is User page. Thanks, Poké95 06:10, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

I would like to know if everything's OK with this Bryson Tiller Feb 2016.jpg picture before i will use it. Please give me an answer as soon as possible. --Eurofan88 (talk) 15:19, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

You copied a non-free photo from the internet and claim it's your work? No, everything is not ok. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:57, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
Chill. The author of that file is this Twitter user, who has given me her consent to upload the file on Wikimedia Commons. --Eurofan88 (talk) 16:05, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

There's no license at the source, so obviously it will fail the license review. That will only waste a reviewer's time. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:33, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
ACK, I added an "OTRS needed" blurb on User_talk:Eurofan88#File:Bryson_Tiller_Feb_2016.jpg and removed the misbegotten license review. Be..anyone (talk) 19:04, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

Template not inline with text

Anyone good with templates?

This:

 •

Becomes:

 • French pronunciation for "blancheur" — Speaker from Paris, France male voice.

I'd ultimately like "Male voice" (Template:Male voice) to be on the same line as the other text. Riley Huntley (talk) 02:45, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Biblatex

Hello everyone,

Ive got a few questions about using pictures from this site for my doctoral thesis. I am writing it with latex, so how the hell can i cite those images with Biblatex? Example: I want to use this figure: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schemazeichnung_haut.svg#file My current Biblatex entry: @online{PIChaut, author = {Sgbeer}, organization = {Wikimedia Foundation}, title = {Schemazeichnung der menschlichen Haut}, year = {2009}, url = {https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schemazeichnung_haut.svg#file} }

My problem is that the Wikimedia site wants me to add Creative Commons licences (I don't even know which one.. it mentions 5 different ones)... How do I do that?? This all doesn't make any sense...

Thanks a lot :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 158.64.153.224 (talk • contribs) 14:50, 1 April 2016‎ (UTC)

If you just want to cite (not to display) an image from the Commons, you do not need to add any licence information. Ruslik (talk) 20:26, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
If the image itself is going to be included, File:Schemazeichnung haut.svg mentions the GNU Free Documentation License Version 1.2 and the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported, 2.5 Generic, 2.0 Generic and 1.0 Generic licenses. This means you can pick any one of those licenses, you don't need to mention them all. --ghouston (talk) 22:18, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

Overwriting files

bsd. i'm trying to overwrite a file with an improved version, but apparently my account is not approved to do this. how can i get this permission? thanks --Benstown (talk) 02:13, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

@Benstown: What file is it? Maybe the file you are trying to overwrite is upload protected, and only administrators can overwrite it. If you have an improved version of the file, please upload the improved version in a website that accepts uploads, then post the link to the improved version at the file's talk page. Don't forget to add Edit request on your request, to attract attention from admins. Then an adminstrator will overwrite the file with your version. Thanks, Poké95 02:20, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
I should elaborate: The file in question is File:Lauda OS.png. I'm asking for this permission, instead of a specific edit, because i contribute mainly in enwiki with logos. most of those are copyright, but a few like the one mentioned are not, usually because it's just letters, so they end up here. as i do many edits, it's impractical to make a request for each one. thanks! --Benstown (talk) 02:29, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Hmm, that file is not protected, and you are autoconfirmed either. Can you tell me what error you have when you try to overwrite that file? Poké95 02:45, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Weird! must have been something wrong with my browser, before it showed "you cannot overwrite", now it seems ok. go figure. thanks anyway for the help!--Benstown (talk) 02:50, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

The two files are by the same uploader, and are actually of the same image. However, they're not exact (thus arises the issue).

The first (...on the bus...) is a modified version of the second (... a kindle...), with the Amazon logo removed from the Kindle's frame, and more brightness.

Are there any issues regarding removing a device's logo? Is there an action here that should be taken (like merging or deletion)? --Hexafluoride (talk) 19:12, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

The one without logo is used as neutral illustation on articles about e-books, so it should definitely stay. The one with logo is the original (and has better lighting). As it's not a duplicate, there is on reason to delete it. One could add "other version" links between the images, though. --rimshottalk 19:31, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
Q1: No. Q2: Maybe. The text is the central part of the picture, clearly legible, and is not used here in any context of commentary about the work of G.R.R. Martin. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:37, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
I didn't even look at the text, but you're right. This kind of problem exists for other e-book photos too, like File:Page Kindle.jpg. The images can be salvaged by blurring the page content, but will not be good demonstrations of e-ink after that. --rimshottalk 19:49, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
And the text on File:Page Kindle.jpg is from a recent book, and it is of course, copyright. I think someone could take photos of the kindle with an out-of-copyright page on it, but this text is (C). Ellin Beltz (talk) 17:31, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

The file has a previous version which is completely different than the current version. Should the old version be uploaded (as it's not currently present as a separate file)? --Hexafluoride (talk) 19:30, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

image deletion

i have a question about 2 images that were deleted from the page i created for the Croatian celebrity Miranda Vidak. I posted pictures both times that are publicly accessible, and can be found on many news websites. Can you please tell me what image can i upload for a known person if you delete private pic, then you delete the pic i found on internet, taken at the public event. What that leaves me? what image can be used for a person? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AkhMilla (talk • contribs)

The fact that an image is all over the internet does not mean that you can upload it here. For this to happen it must come under a free licence. See Commons:Licensing for details. Ruslik (talk) 17:21, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

I was going to suggest asking your question to User:Paname-IV, who uploaded those files, but I see that someone already asked him that question in 2013 and apparently he did not reply. See User talk:Paname-IV#Lombards Museum and Commons:Village pump/Archive/2013/09#Lombards Museum?. updating an image

I have tried to update an image on the ASKY AIRLINES page. I wanted to update the route network which was changed in August 2015. I have tried repeatedly to update the image with new routings and a background map of Africa. But i can't seem to get the new image to show. The new source information shows, and on the page where it says CURRENT, REVERT, REVERT REVERT I see my update as the CURRENT, but even when i click on the CURRENT it shows the old. What am i doing wrong? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seat9k (talk • contribs)

 • May I assume that by "the ASKY Airlines page" you mean ASKY Airlines (in the English-language Wikipedia), which you seem to have edited quite a bit? And that the image in question is File:ASKY Route Network.jpg, which I see you have edited several times? You seem to have (successfully) uploaded the same fix six times in a row. You probably have a caching issue in your browser. Try looking at it with a different browser or on a different machine. - Jmabel ! talk 13:55, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

"‎Invalid Ogg file: Stream Undecodable"

Some files (e.g. this one) display the error "‎(Invalid Ogg file: Stream Undecodable)". Is there a way to keep track of them? I found no way to get them listed on-wiki, and a Google site search gave incomplete results (e.g. missing the above example). Is anyone (or any tool) watching out for these files with the aim of fixing the respective problems systematically? -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 19:23, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

Category:OGG files with errors is populated by , so that's how it can be tagged manually, but as you said, it should be an automatical procedure. On my box ffplay (3.0), MPlayer, and MPC-HC can play the video with no audio. MediaInfo claims that this is an ordinary vorbis+theora, but I think ffprobe found an issue: theora + empty vorbis + mjpeg. Two video streams, and mjpeg can't be good in an Ogg container. –Be..anyone (talk) 11:25, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
I actually don't see why mjpeg is so bad, it's just a "32x32 pixels 'file icon'" as claimed in stream metadata. I made a query for "Stream Undecodable" files at quarry:query/8957, and will upload a fixed version. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 11:53, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
=b}, you fixed it, thanks. But something in this manual procedure is wrong, please report it as bug, broken media files should show up in a tracking category automatically. –Be..anyone (talk) 16:50, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Zdzislaw Piernik Tuba.png

I uploaded this file because, as I read in Polish Wikipedia FAQ:

https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomoc:FAQ

that files created in Poland before 1994 without copyright are considered as Public Domain. This one originates from longplay "Zdzisław Piernik - Tuba" (Polskie Nagrania, Warsaw 1982, SX1806). There is no copyright note on the cover, only (P). The author - Leon Myszkowski is deceased.

Fotos in Kategorie nach Datum sortieren

Guten Tag! Gibt es die Möglichkeit, Fotos in einer bestimmten Kategorie nach Upload-Datum chronologisch zu sortieren? Die Standarddarstellung ermöglicht lediglich die Sortierung nach Fototitel. Danke! —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2a02:8071:418a:8000:b8bb:c086:3861:4040 (talk) 08:49, 3. Apr. 2016‎ (UTC)

In Englisch:

Hello! How can I sort the pictures in a category? I want to sort the pictures with the Upload date. Default is a sorting by Title. Thank you very much!

 • To control the sort of an image, when you include the category on the image page you need to use a sort key: e.g. in , will sort as the file name "John Doe.jpg" but will sort as "Doe, John". - Jmabel ! talk 13:49, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Re-categorizing

I don't have any uploads, but I'm pretty active on En.wikipedia in the horse project and I've noticed that a lot of horse pictures are badly categorized. Is it ok to add categories based on the apparent breed or usage of the horse in the photo? Sometimes a purebred horse is not within its breed's cat, but it is obviously of that breed or even says so in the image description. I've done this a few times already, because pictures from 5 or 6 years ago are categorized right and most recent ones are not. Thanks, White Arabian Filly (talk) 21:41, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

I'd say since you know about horse breeds then you are quite welcome to fix the categorizations. Apparent breed in a photo is surely good enough, since the photo can be used to depict that breed, even if the horse's pedigree isn't known here. --ghouston (talk) 01:09, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi Terry/Paul! I've never heard of confirming one's IP address being part of the registration process, and I struggle to envision how that would work. I'm guessing you mean your e-mail address. Providing an e-mail address when registering is completely optional. You may choose to provide an e-mail address to enable password recovery in case you forget your password, to enable e-mail notifications, and to allow other users to contact you via e-mail. You do not need to complete that step to be able to log in using the user name and password you provided when registering. LX (talk, contribs) 15:51, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

Problem with generation of preview images - too dark

Hi, I have used the upload wizard many times before but today I ran into a strange problem when I uploaded an illustration of the Zika virus. The preview images (any size) are much darker than the actual image. Once you click to show the image at full resolution, it's displayed properly. I made a screenshot to illustrate what I mean: screenshot At first I thought it may have been a glitch and I saved the file in a different format (PNG, sRGB, 8Bit) and uploaded the new version but the problem is the same. It's as if the software that creates the preview images runs a low-exposure-filter over the image. Any idea of how I can fix this? Thanks --Splette (talk) 17:09, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

That looks like phabricator:T106516. LX (talk, contribs) 17:27, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Thank you! Yes, it seems like that is the problem. So I added a single pixel in color, re-uploaded and now it's working :) --Splette (talk) 17:40, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Suggestion, get TweakPNG if you are a Windows user, and add a dummy gAMA 45455 chunk if this issue hits you again for grayscale. The "one RGB-pixel" hack sounds odd if this is supposed to be a grayscale PNG. But all your versions are apparently RGB with a color profile, in that case an sRGB chunk could replace gAMA+iCCP (for the most common SRGB case.) –Be..anyone (talk) 00:27, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Problem with Upload Wizard

I was uploading some images using the Upload Wizard yesterday, and it was working just fine. A couple of hours later I tried to upload another image, but the procedure could not get past the last step even there were no errors displayed. After clicking on the NEXT button, it wouldn't publish the image. It just returned back to the Describe step, with no errors displayed, and this time without the NEXT button. The Upload Wizard got stuck in the last step, and no data were saved. I tried the Upload Wizard a few more times later on, but to no avail. I also tried another browser, but the problem remained. The browser doesn't seem to be an issue here. What is the problem here? My-wiki-photos (talk) 05:13, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

@My-wiki-photos: It was reported before numerous times, and we really don't know what is the problem with Upload Wizard. For now, please use the basic upload form, which is entirely stable. Thanks, Poké95 06:01, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for the info. My understanding is that this has been happening to many others as well. It looks like an error handling issue. The program fails in the last step for some reason, but the error handling part of the program is not sophisticated enough to be able to catch it and display the error status code and the associated error message, and provide an option to recover from the failure. My-wiki-photos (talk) 16:33, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

I want to do a follow-up as I figured it out what was causing this problem. This needs to be fixed as soon as possible. I am certainly not the only one who experienced this kind of situation. It is indeed about poor error handling. I figured what was causing the problem when I tried to upload the image using the old basic form. Here's the screenshot: https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1650/26360815785_55939bf5d7_o.jpg I immediately noticed that I was trying to use a filename that already existed. Then I asked myself why the Upload Wizard did not recognize and warn me about that as it did many times before. I think the reason is the file extension. The file uploaded earlier had a JPG extension (uppercase), while the new file with the same name had a jpg extension (lowercase). So, my guess is that the Upload Wizard was treating these files as if they had different names during the validation phase just because the extensions were different, while in fact it was the same file format, and it was the same filename. And, that's the very reason the program failed and got stuck in the last step with no errors displayed. So, validation of the destination filename needs to be fixed with respect to this kind of situation. My-wiki-photos (talk) 03:52, 11 April 2016 (UTC)

Another follow-up: This problem was reported phab:T132356 and the bug has been since fixed to properly error handle filename duplicates with different extension capitalization. Instead of getting stuck the Upload Wizard now allows for corrections to be made and data resubmitted without the user having to repeat the entire process from the very start. Nice photos, but at least this example has a CC BY NC (non-commercial) license not allowed here. If the tool doesn't work you can upload manually and put a flickrreview in the information. Example uploaded today without a tool. –Be..anyone 💩 16:11, 16 April 2016 (UTC)

Magazine front cover

Hi there, I am trying to add a picture of 10 Men magazine. However, I cannot find any images relating to the page. I am slightly confused as to what I will be allowed to upload if I have taken a picture of something.

e.g. If I took a picture of a 10 men magazine front cover and uploaded it to commons, will I be allowed to use it, or is it a copy right infringment?

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ana Edge (talk • contribs) 12:55, 17 April 2016‎ (UTC)

You may not upload an image of a non-free magazine cover, as that would constitute copyright infringement. Thank you for asking, LX (talk, contribs) 13:57, 17 April 2016 (UTC)
To be extra clear, "non-free" refers to items that are copyrighted (i.e. are someone's creative work that hasn't been explicitly licensed differently). This is different from a magazine being distributed for free or at cost. BMacZero (talk) 16:44, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

HotCat categories still not working

HotCat categories are still not working properly. I keep on seeing up to three separate "Categories" rows, with no explanation of which I should use. And when I use HotCat to add categories, it forgets the first one and only uses the ones after that. I have to add the first category manually. JIP (talk) 21:06, 13 April 2016 (UTC)

Change in millennium logo - request

Hi All,

this is to bring to your notice that the company i work for i.e Millennium and Copthorne Hotels went through a re-branding exercise recently and am looking for best possible ways to change our old logo in wiki pages created back in 2008 to reflect our new logo.

here is our old logo reference link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Millenniumhotlogo.PNG

I have the new logo assets with me and can upload but want to know the exact process to upload (as it is a sensitive matter wrt copyright policies) i do not want to agree blindly the terms on media settings section and hit upload. hence, can you please guide me on how to go about it.

your help is highly appreciated.

Regards, Naresh

There are several options: 1) upload it here at Commons as a non-copyrightable logo, in the public domain: it appears to be a few bars and text, which probably wouldn't be copyrightable in the US, but for a British company it may not be so clear; 2) release the logo under a free license and upload it here at Commons; 3) upload it at the English-language Wikipedia [1] and choose "This is a copyrighted, non-free work, but I believe it is Fair Use." and give a fair-use rationale as for the old logo. --ghouston (talk) 05:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

You didn't understand me. I asked you if you could help me with the rules. I need to insert photos of Jewish actors from the Soviet Union, but somebody erases all my photos from Wikipedia because I take the photos from the Soviet films on YouTube. Could you explain me what to do in order nobody can erase my photos? --149.78.188.229 16:24, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes, my remark was for others trying to figure out what this is about. The video confirms 1960 for the film, so now somebody else (not me) has to check if an image found in the film has a "free license" as defined by Commons:Copyright_rules_by_territory#Russia_and_former_Soviet_Union (intro on Commons:Лицензирование). The "Standard YouTube license" is of course not good enough.
On the English Wikipedia—if you upload there and not here—you could test "fair use" for images of dead persons. –Be..anyone 💩 16:35, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

So, you offer me to upload photos into the English Wikipedia, do you? Am I right? --149.78.188.229 17:10, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

NOT any wiki, e.g., not dewiki, I don't know the ruwiki rules. Yes, this "fair use" on enwiki requires a "fair use" rationale, and the person has to be dead (example not yet checked by an enwiki reviewer). You can also ask here on Commons:Форум for better suggestions. –Be..anyone 💩 19:40, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

Fair use

Really not sure how this fair use thing works. See discussion here with who I suspect is the marketing manager for a radio show called Marketplace. She wants to update headshots of at least one person, but I have no idea how you give correct permissions for that without giving a free public use license, which I'm not sure they can do.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but please comment over at the Wikipedia link above. I only occasionally use commons and maintain no presence here. I'm pretty sure pings don't work across communities, as apparently my user page doesn't.

Anyway, the information is for the other person and not for me. Timothyjosephwood (talk) 00:14, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi User:ANNVALF! First of all, as it says right at the top of this page, please sign and date your questions using four tilde characters (~). That will provide a link to your account, where your contributions are listed, so that we can have chance to understand who you are and what you've done so far. Now, to address the key parts from above:
 • "I created [an] account and posted copies of 5 articles [I] wanted posted" – as explained at Commons:Project scope/Summary, Wikimedia Commons is a repository of free, educational media files used by Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, and others. We do not host articles. Encyclopædic articles (such as biographies of notable people) may be published on Wikipedia. Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons are different sites with different scopes, although both are overseen by the same non-profit foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation.
 • "[In] 2016[, I] was sent an e-mail granting me permission to do this[.] I completed the contract[,] signed it and e-mailed it back to you" – someone granted you permission to post articles on Commons, and they made you sign some contract? I'm sorry, but whoever that person was or whatever contract you signed, hosting articles are still outside the project scope of Wikimedia Commons.
 • "I hereby affirm that I, Vivian A. J. Alford, am and the representive of JAVACCS,LLC and the copyright holder's of Mr. Earl Randolph, Mr. Mr. Bennie E. Prater, Ms. Lois Pruitt, and Mr. Willie Love (we will only mention Legend: Mr. Walter P. Fontenot and refer all to his web site, he is a judge and allowed us to use his web site information, without any alterations" – this part is really incoherent, but it looks like a mangled version of our standard consent declaration. The purpose of this declaration, when filled out correctly, is for the copyright holder of a media file (such as a photo) to provide permission to publish said media under a free license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes.
I'll say this again: Hosting of articles, such as biographies, are outside the project scope of Wikimedia Commons. No contract or consent declaration will change that. If you are trying to create an article on Wikipedia, you need to go to Wikipedia. en:Wikipedia:Your first article is a good start. Looking at the PDF documents you uploaded, it is likely that the people for whom you wish to write about do not meet the English Wikipedia's inclusion criteria for notability, but if you need help understanding the policies of Wikipedia, you should ask any further questions at their help desk. Creating Educational Resources

Dear Sir/Madam, I am currently building a resource base of educational material for teachers and students, concerning the possible reintroduction of the Eurasian lynx to Britain.

For purely educational purposes, and not for profit, is it acceptable to use Wikipedia content to create educational resources for children? I would, of course, attribute the source. I've looked through the terms and conditions, but I am still unsure how I stand on this. It is not quite 'personal use', but it's not really a 'business' either. Best regards, Graham Temby — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.208.82.117 (talk • contribs)

 • Profit or not is irrelevant under the licenses accepted by Wikimedia Foundation projects.
 • You are asking on Wikimedia Commons, so I hesitate to make statements about Wikipedia as such, but this should be OK if done right.
 • It would help a lot if you would give examples of the kind of material you want to use. For example, here on Commons, different images are differently licensed, so it is hard to make a blanket statement about exactly what attribution and what licensing disclaimers are required. It should be clear from each individual file page.
 • In my experience, for both Wikipedia and Commons, it is pretty easy to conform to the free licenses if your use is online or otherwise digital. In print, it's a little trickier, because you can't just link to license terms and are required to reproduce them.
 • See en:Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content and Commons:Reusing_content_outside_Wikimedia for a more thorough answer. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
Also, we won't accept images that are noncommercial, because they are incompatible with our licensing policy. Please consider making it available for commercial use, especially if you really want to help uneducated children that has no access to the internet. Thank you, Poké95 10:41, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

How do I link my older local files in Commons to my profile?

Hi, I've put some photos on the German Wikipedia in former times. They are already in Wikimedia Commons - but they don't appear in my list of photos: Meine Fotos auf Commons

Is there a way that these photos appear in my list? Some are still quoted as uploaded by myself, others were altered and upladed again by others (these will certainly not link to my list) [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

I think the only way for them to appear in your filelist is to reupload them ("Upload a new version of this file"). --Magnus (talk) 15:25, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

World Digital Library

Are images from this site okay for Commons? For example this page. The document is hundreds of years old so it is out of copyright?--الدبوني (talk) 15:21, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

The photos actually show a 3D object. So, they may not be ok. On other hand if the text itself is excised then such images can be uploaded. Ruslik (talk) 20:04, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
Well the object is 3D but the representation is a 2D one. I don't know but I was hoping/expecting it to be okay for Commons.--الدبوني (talk) 08:14, 21 April 2016 (UTC)
The issue is that a photo of a 3D object always involves some creativity, so (under current law pretty much everywhere in the world) the photo has its own copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 21 April 2016 (UTC)

Attribution confusion/question

Hello there, I intend to use the following photograph of Adolf Hitler in a video I am producing: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-S33882,_Adolf_Hitler_retouched.jpg

However on the page it states "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work)."

I'm happy to give proper attribution, but to be honest I'm confused how I am meant to display this information. I read some guides on this site on how to do this, but it only made me more confused in the end.

Would someone be able to give me a paragraph/line of text that I can copy/paste into the credits of my video which would have the proper attribution? Thanks in advance, and sorry for such a banal question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ‎5.151.0.134 (talk • contribs)

The line "Attribution: Bundesarchiv, Bild 183-S33882 / CC-BY-SA 3.0" is an attempted attribution. I'd link it to the source (example), but that's a matter of taste and anyway not what you can do in a video. –Be..anyone 💩 14:04, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I'm looking to create a collage of images from commons and upload that collage to commons. However, I'm sort of confused about licensing and which ones I can combine. I have 7 images. These are the licenses they have:

@Jodamaster: Hello, the license that you should use for your collage is CC-BY-SA-4.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International). Are all the images that you will use for your collage is your own work? If yes, I recommend you to upload them seperately too, but it is not mandatory. If not, please state in the source field the website(s) where you get those images. Thanks! Poké95 09:34, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

The copyright holder needs to agree to publish the painting under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes; please read at least the introduction to Commons' licensing policy, as instructed by the cheerfully salmon-coloured box on the file description page. If they are not willing to allow such use, the file cannot be hosted here. If they are willing to do it, see Commons:OTRS for information on how to obtain and submit a suitable permission statement to our archive. Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 16:16, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Issues downloading thumbnails from IPv6

Hello,

I am having intermittent timeout issues downloading thumbnails from IPv6. For example this always works

$ curl -4 -o /tmp/test.jpg 'https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/It%C5%8D_Jakuch%C5%AB_-_Five_hundred_arhats_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg/300px-It%C5%8D_Jakuch%C5%AB_-_Five_hundred_arhats_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg'

but this mostly times out

$ curl -6 -o /tmp/test.jpg 'https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fd/It%C5%8D_Jakuch%C5%AB_-_Five_hundred_arhats_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg/300px-It%C5%8D_Jakuch%C5%AB_-_Five_hundred_arhats_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg'

All other IPv6 requests on my machine appear to be working OK. Let me know if I can provide more info.

Cheers,

Fred. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ftclausen (talk • contribs)

@Ftclausen: Hello, please report it at Phabricator (https://phabricator.wikimedia.org). Some users there will help you out there. Also, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~). Thanks, Poké95 09:37, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

new versions of images

Hello. I uploaded new versions of a few images to Commons that are a bit lighter (less dark) than the first ones, but when I transclude them to Wikisource, the old versions still show up: s:Page:Vida's Art of Poetry.djvu/8, 12 and 90 – only when I click on the images (to enlarge them) do I see them change to the new versions. Is that normal? When (if ever) will these images be updated on Wikisource? Thank you. ~ DanielTom (talk) 16:40, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Hello,
Q1: Yes, it's normal or, more exactly, it's not unusual.
Q2: When everything between you and the saved file gets updated, including the cache of your system and the caches of Wikimedia. You can try looking at the thumbnail in a size different from the sizes you have already displayed. You can try purging the caches to which you have access. If it doesn't work, just wait. It could take between a few minutes and a few hours. Sometimes longer.
-- Asclepias (talk) 17:14, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
@DanielTom: On second thought, it may not be normal. After looking at the dates of your uploads, it seems you uploaded the images last week. The thumbnails do look dark on the Wikisource pages. There could be a problem other than the temporary cache thing. Your problem could be similar to this: Commons:Help desk/Archive/2016/04#Problem with generation of preview images - too dark. You could see if it applies to your images and if the solution mentioned there could solve the problem. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:33, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have mentioned how long ago it was. I'll have a look, and re-upload the slightly changed images, when I have more time. Thanks again ~ DanielTom (talk) 22:18, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Copyright approval regarding File:KUDD.png.

I need copyright approval from Broadway Media in Salt Lake City to use 105.1 KUDD-FM's logo. To call them click on this link on their website (mix1051utah,com) and see the phone number for Mix 105.1 in Salt Lake City. I don't know if it's copyrighted or public domain so I can put this photo on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonathan7157 (talk • contribs) 20:44, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

See Commons:OTRS for how to request and submit licensing permission from a copyright holder. Most corporations will not be willing to release their copyrighted content into the public domain or to publish it under a license that allows anyone to use, modify or redistribute it for any purpose, including commercial purposes, so manage your expectations. No subject

I would like to add a map to my wikipedia page, but I am not sure about copyright: the book was published in 1898, so is it still necessary to ask for the author's permission to use this graphic? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsylor373 (talk • contribs) 14:30, 15 April 2016‎ (UTC)

The book is in the public domain in USA. Whether it is acceptable to the Commons depends on the country where it was first published. Ruslik (talk) 20:33, 15 April 2016 (UTC)
@Jsylor373: Hello, who is the author of the book, when the author died, and where is this book published? We need this information to determine if the book is in the public domain. Thanks! Poké95 10:33, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

image

Hello - I'm attempting to add an image to the page of Sculptor Victoria Thorson, and having trouble. The image has no copyright issues and has been uploaded. Just can't figure out how to add it. A little help would be appreciated. -Gregor

This is what I copied from the image, which doesn't seem to be translating to an imageː

Bronze Oculus Model for Enlargement. On view at Lobby Octagon in Roosevelt Island, NY.

 • You copied the text describing the image. Presumably you mean to include the image, doing something like . And I see you uploaded that photo recently. Presumably, though, that sculpture is copyrighted by Victoria Thorson, so I suspect it does not belong on Commons without going through the COM:OTRS process. - Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 24 April 2016 (UTC)

Official Headshot Upload

I have a headshot that I want to upload for display on the wiki page Janet Sawicki. This headshot was taken by our contracted photographer for use on our website www.limr.org and any other promotional, press releases and wiki pages for Dr. Sawicki. I uploaded it once and Wiki pages removed it. Can you help me add it to the page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Erindestefano (talk • contribs)

 • Please read COM:OTRS; we'll need an email to clarify permissions for images that are found elsewhere online and where the other location online doesn't indicate a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:01, 25 April 2016 (UTC)

Pictures

Hello,

I am having some trouble getting pictures licensed properly. I scanned the photos out of a book and I was wondering how to cite the source of the book for the image. I uploaded 3 images the other day and I am experiencing many problems with them and they are stopping my article from being published. I would really appreciate your help.

Copyright help regarding File:Slimy Sculpin 2.jpg

I don't know how to make this image any more sufficient. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Slimy_Sculpin_2.jpg The link to the image I found on the database is: http://www.ontariofishes.ca/fish_detail.php?FID=123 and if you click on the image on the bottom right it takes you to this link: http://www.ontariofishes.ca/bigpic.php?FID=123&OMNR=382 I want to use this image on the "Slimy sculpin" wikipedia page for my Vertebrate Zoology class. I however don't want to get in trouble with copyrights, so I was wondering how I could make this more sufficient? or if I shouldn't even use it on the page? On the homepage that I got the picture on said that if you were to cite the database you should use "Eakins, R. J. 2016. Ontario Freshwater Fishes Life History Database. Version 4.68. Online database. (http://www.ontariofishes.ca), accessed 28 April 2016". I tried to do this, but again don't think I did it right.

Let me know if you can help out at all! Thanks --Jthotland (talk) 21:47, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

It can be used if the copyright holder has released it under a free license. Since that site just says "Copyright © 1999-2016 Robert J. Eakins. All Rights Reserved", you are out of luck unless Robert J. Eakins, or whoever the copyright holder is of that particular image, if different, licenses it. --ghouston (talk) 22:38, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Download stats for video files

Hello guys,

with https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/ there is a tool to see how often an article have been viewed in a certain period. Is there a similar tool for getting the download statistics of a media file uploaded to Wikimedia Commons? In particular I am interested to see how often a video like File:Wanna Work Together? with subtitles - Creative Commons.ogv was played in a certain period.

Greetings, Stephan Kulla (talk) 20:08, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
