Sorting within a category

I've been doing a bunch of work on photos of churches in Bucharest the last few days. As part of assessing what remains, I've been trying to sort the images in Category:Romanian Orthodox churches in Bucharest that are not (yet) in subcategories, so as to get multiple images of the same church together. For some unknown reason, a few don't seem to sort where I put them, e.g. File:Bucuresti, Romania. Biserica Popa Soare.JPG, File:Bucuresti, Romania, Biserica Sf. Nicolae Tabacu, Str. Calea Victoriei (2).JPG. I've put these under Popa Soare and Nicolae Tabacu, respectively, but they are both just showing up sorted by their file names. Does someone understand better than I what is going on? - Jmabel ! talk 06:28, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Null edit fixed the problem. Some kind of database glitch I suspect. MKFI (talk) 07:42, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

English translation of Lettre_à_M._Dacier_relative_à_l’alphabet_des_hiéroglyphes_phonétiques

Champollion's letter of 1822 to Mr. Dacier concerns his deciphering of the Rosetta Stone. It is in French. Because of the antiquated French, Google translation is not very good. I have translated it into English. Would Wikisource accept my translation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhysbryant (talk • contribs) 15:36, 01 November 2015 (UTC)

It would be acceptable on en.Wikisource; the details should probably be discussed there.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:25, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

incorrect image on Sir Walter Raleigh's wikipedia page

I was looking at the silver seal on the Walter Raleigh page: the descrription is correct but (to my eyes at least!) the entire image appears mirrored left to right.

How do I go about either:

a) changing it to fix the error (should I do it? should I contact the article's author etc?) or

b) notifying the relevant people who will then make the change

Joe — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoePinball (talk • contribs) 11:25, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

@JoePinball: I think the image is correct. It's a stamp to put in hot wax, so while when we look at it the words are flipped, when you stamp it, the imprint will be the correct way round.
As for how you do this generally, the best way is to start on the article talk page, en:Talk:Walter Raleigh. Articles rarely have a single author, but a talk page message is visible to everyone who watches the article. -mattbuck (Talk) 12:25, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
I agree about the image; note the subject is identified as a seal-matrix right in the title.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:52, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

change of account name

In april this year I received a msg from the Commons that my username (Velvis) had to be changed (and was changed) into Velvis~commonswiki. However, when I visit https://commons.wikimedia.org, I automatically get logged in as Velvis. The User page however says: "User talk:Velvis~commonswiki". Logging out and then trying to log in as Velvis~commonswiki does not work. It's a bit confusing; my username is changed into "Velvis~commonswiki", but I still have to log in with username "Velvis".

What to do ?

If I shouldn't use Velvis anymore, then I would like to change the username into something shorter than "Velvis~commonswiki". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Velvis (talk • contribs) 16:49, 02 November 2015 (UTC)

  • The main thing going on here is that accounts now go across multiple WMF wikis ("Unified login"). You probably ignored several notifications that you could unify your "Velvis" accounts on the different wikis before the unification was finalized (in your case, nl-wiki). All of these accounts are yours; it's fine if you use the (unified, cross-wiki) Velvis account; it just won't be attached to the two uploads you did on the old account (now "Velvis~commonswiki"), but you can add those two files to your watchlist if you like. - Jmabel ! talk 17:05, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:UEFA Europa League Logo 2015.png

--185.46.214.65 11:17, 3 November 2015 (UTC) Hello

UEFA is providing on their microsite the new identity for partners but as well to newspaper, boggers etc. This new identity is including the new UEFA Europa League Logo as well.

Here the Link: www.uelbrandsupport.com/bam/mediasupport

Additionally, you can also download the new logo on UEFA's website.

I don't know how to upload the logo so it doesn't get deleted - but as much as I understand it is ok to use this logo.

Can you please help me and instruct what I need to click in order to cover the rights part so it doesn't get deleted? I think Wikipedia should have the new UEFA Europa League logo.

Thanks a lot

From the page indicated above (link): “The various graphical, brand and other materials (including logos and official marks) featured in this website are owned by UEFA and are protected by national and international copyright, design, trade mark and/or other intellectual property laws and conventions. Any commercial and/or promotional use of the UEFA Materials without UEFA’s consent is strictly prohibited.” So there’s no way that can be hosted here, but it might be acceptable on the English Wikipedia with an appropriate fair use rationale.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 12:19, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
ok another question - how is it possible to have the old Europa League logo (or much more often the Champions League one) on Wikipedia then? Same statements, same rules, same same everything but it is across all UEFA related Wikipedia pages?

Thank you for explaining. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 185.46.214.65 (talk) 13:11, 03 November 2015 (UTC)

@185.46.214.65: The old logos, assuming you are referring to ones like File:UEFA Europa league logo.svg that are only composed of text, are too 'simple' for copyright protection and only trademarked. See COM:TOO for details. The more complex ones can be used on some Wikipedias under a claim of 'fair use', but can't be uploaded to Commons (there is no fair use here). Revent (talk) 16:47, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

I am actually referring to this: File:Europa league.svg - which is just the older version of the logo I would like to upload.... I wonder how all previous logos ended up on this page? it is a miracle for me how this works :)

I would really like to contribute to Wikipedia's pages - and make sure there is no false information online (which is the case right now if wikepdia shows old logos)...as the helpdesk, what is your advice? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 185.46.214.65 (talk) 17:08, 03 November 2015 (UTC)

As you can see, that link is red, because there is no such file here on Commons. There is a file by that name over at English Wikipedia: en:File:Europa league.svg. As clearly stated on that page, it is non-free and hosted locally at that project under a fair use rationale. LX (talk, contribs) 18:22, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Copyright of maps I create from paintmaps.com

Can I share maps I create at http://paintmaps.com/ under a free license? I'd assume using such a website is no different from using a graphic editing program like PhotoShop which doesn't add its own copyright, but want to double check, since it does offer templates...? --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 04:30, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

I doubt their base maps are copyrightable—but don‘t take my word for it; COM:VP/C might be a better place to get advice on this. Regardless, I think we have better ones here, many in SVG format, some of those having been set up for use in a text editor (See e.g. File:BlankMap-World6.svg). I was particularly struck by the world map at that site: the Mercator projection is a terrible choice; having been designed for a completely different purpose (navigation) it grossly exaggerates the size of high-latitude countries.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 06:16, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

Uploading an image from Journal Article

Hi, this is Hseong2 and a student editor from Western University. I would like to ask a question regarding "uploading an image from journal article."

This is the journal article I am using for my article: Article. On page 4, there is an image called "TEM Model". Using this image will help improve my article.

My question is: Under which right can I upload this image?

Thanks in advance. Hseong2 (talk) 14:41, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

As you can see, at the bottom there is a copyright notice: © 2012 Hogrefe Publishing. Unless they release this image under an appropriate licence, you may not upload and use it. Ruslik (talk) 17:34, 4 November 2015 (UTC)
If by "upload" you mean "upload to Commons" (the site on which you are asking this question), you'd need the copyright-holders' permission (submitted as described at COM:SCOPE COM:OTRS).
You don't say whether your article is on Wikipedia (and if so what language) or somewhere else. Each different language Wikipedia has its own policies about non-free use, as do other WMF sites, and of course non-WMF sites all have their own. If you can explain where it is you want to use it, there might be other solutions. - Jmabel ! talk 17:36, 4 November 2015 (UTC)

images from Flickr

Dear image experts: I came across this image along with several others uploaded from the subject's Flickr account. They have not been taken by the subject, because he is in them. Apparently they have been checked by a bot to be sure that they were licensed at Flickr, but this on says it was taken by a renowned photographer. I don't know how to tell if this and the other images uploaded from the same place are okay from a copyright point of view; perhaps someone here will know how to check. • If you are talking about an image that is already on Commons, in Wikipedia when you click on the image that will (automatically) go to the relevant Commons page that has the credits. While there has been a little bit of controversy about that, the consensus is that constitutes sufficient credit. If you mean something else (other than using a picture on Wikipedia that is already on Commons), please clarify. - Jmabel ! talk 17:42, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi! Sorry, no I'm talking about pictures unknown to Commons, but present on a specific website. I guess I'd have to upload it to Commons and specify the website (source) and author (fotographer). But I've read I also have to clarify in some way that the photographer agrees to a certain license. How do I do that and what suffices as 'evidence' for this? A simple email or something? Thanks in advance! Pen&Papier (talk) 12:50, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

See Commons:OTRS. The photographer has to send an EMail to the OTRS team and specifiy the licence and how she or he wants to be attributed. --Magnus (talk) 13:05, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

I posted an image and quickly received a message saying it doesn't have all the info needed and will be deleted:

JuTa left a message on your talk page. File:2 color AANR logo-300DPI.jpg does not have a license

I spent a LOT of time reading about what's needed and find this all very confusing. Let me explain the image: it's the logo for the not-for-profit of which I am the national Vice President. I'm trying to insert it on the updated page about the organization (American Association for Nude Recreation). I did not create the work, my organization did. There is no single owner; the organization owns it. As Vice President, I can authorize its use on the Wiki page. There is no place on our website where this logo exists all by itself, so I can't point to an URL. In short, I can't figure out how to do it.

Can you help?

Thank you in advance for your time,

Sharon McLeod Vice President, American Association for Nude Recreation

Hello. I think the status of this logo would be PD-textlogo, i.e., it's not original enough to qualify for copyright in the United States. If your organization name is trade marked, you can also add Trademarked. To add these to the image, use {{PD-textlogo}} {{Trademarked}}. --ghouston (talk) 00:20, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Book title pages

Hi everyone! Are there any rules about uploading pictures of book title pages? Are they usually copyrighted? I'd like to know if I can move this picture to Commons. The book in the picture was published in the Uzbek SSR, USSR, in the 70s and 80s. The publishing company doesn't even exist anymore. And there are many books like this (printed in Soviet times by publishing companies that are now defunct). You can freely download electronic copies of such books from this website. As far as I know, Uzbek officials are well aware of this website and have even explicitly supported it. Their files are print-protected, though. They also don't want you to be making money off of their books. Any help will be much appreciated. Nataev talk 11:58, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Yes, book covers are under a copyright, either 70 years after publication by the publisher, or 70 years after the death of the designer. So a formal written permission for a free license is needed (see COM:OTRS). Regards, Yann (talk) 15:12, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your response. I do know that book covers are copyrighted. But my question is specifically about title pages, not covers. Nataev talk 16:29, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
All creative works are protected by copyright upon creation. There is no difference between book covers, title pages or any other types of creative works in this context. That said, uz:File:UzSE first volume title page.jpg is most likely below the threshold of originality required to be considered a creative work eligible for copyright protection. Many of the articles in the project's wiki use Commons images (for instance http://www.lgbthistoryuk.org/wiki/index.php?title=West_Hampstead to take just one example). Hitherto there has been no problem with displaying those images within the wiki, but today they are not working. There are about 1400 images used in this way.

Can someone advise, please, what may have caused this?

Where is the photo I uploaded and how do I change the file name and how do I put the photo on a page?

Hi

I managed to (somehow) upload an image that I named as '2015-11-13 ~ NSW - Mount Keira (Allen Sundholm).jpg

I intended to put the image on the page for Syzygium smithii.

I also need to change the file name, to remove my name as shown in brackets in the filename. After I uploaded it, there were no instructions or wizard to allow me to put that image on the Syzygium smithii page. So I navigated to the Syzygium smithii page, and again no instructions, links or wizard. I tried to go to my image, but it had gone. I tried to follow the help directions as to how to put an image on a page, but it was all gobbledegook, and still no wizard, and no instructation or wizard to let me find or edit the photo I had just uploaded, which seems to have vanished.

Thus, I have no idea how to get to my image, nor how to change its name, nor how to put it onto the Syzygium smithii page (which has a photo of the flowers of an entirely different species in Syzygium, thus I was trying to insert my picture of the flowers of Syzygium smithii). I find your site absolutely impossible to navigate.

Preferably, what should happen is that upon my logging in I get to see all the images I uploaded (I have only uploaded the one image so far) and associated data such as upload date, with simple instructions and wizard to enable me to put an image I uploaded on the page of my choice, plus a list of all my previous page edits and dates etc.

Can you please advise how I can find my image and how I can change the filename, and can you please redesign your site so that upon my logging in straight away I can see all my images, with a wizard to paste whichever image I select into a page, etc, as suggested?

Thank you,

Allen Sundholm entom2@optusnet.com.au — Preceding unsigned comment added by Buprestman (talk • contribs) 02:45, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello,
  • To get a list of your files, click on the Uploads link, which should to to [1].
  • To request renaming, see Commons:File renaming.
  • To add an image to a Wikipedia page, use something like [[File:2015-11-13 ~ NSW - Mount Keira (Allen Sundholm).jpg|thumb|Syzygium smithii]]
  • I think that's most of your questions, I can't deal with redesigning the site at the moment. --ghouston (talk) 03:42, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Many kind thanks Ghouston! I somehow managed to get the file renamed - I had to use a hidden advanced feature called 'Move' (not the more logical name 'Rename') for goodness sake. However, I don't have a clue as to what to do with the third bullet point, i.e. precisely how do I insert my image into the page for Syzygium smithii? Copy and paste that filename thingo you kindly suggested into something? Why is the process of adding a photo to a page so user unfriendly? Many thanks again, Allen Sundholm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Buprestman (talk • contribs) 08:01, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Image-display syntax is documented at MediaWiki; on any page here, click “Help“ (near the top of the sidebar on the left), where you should see an “Images“ link under “Advanced editing“. If you‘re talking about en:Syzygium smithii (note each Wikipedia or allied project is a different site), there are already several images on the page to serve as examples. When you click “Edit“ on that page you can see the wiki-code that’s used to display them with their captions, which you can emulate in adding your own. (Except the first one, which is in an infobox with more complicated syntax.) Be sure to use the exact current filename of your photo, and use the Preview button to check the page before saving. (And please sign your posts on Talk pages and noticeboards by typing four tildes ~~~~.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 08:30, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

Many kind thanks, I finally got it done! Buprestman (talk) 08:53, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

Thomas Bateman (Archaeologist) - Two images of Thomas Bateman copied from the Internet

I wish to upload two Internet-sourced photos (of a drawing and a painting) of Thomas Bateman (Archaeologist) to your page:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Bateman that I copied from copied from web sites: http://www.marymaryquitecontrary.org.uk/archives/category/hidden-stories/page/2 ; and http://collections.museums-sheffield.org.uk/media/view/People/242/1974?t:state:flow=20656e21-f639-4ff6-afb0-2ac9ae48508e . Can this be done and added to the image block or elsewhere on your Wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bartonellison (talk • contribs) 21:53, 14 November 2015 (UTC)

  • I think any pieces that can be confidently stated to come from Bateman's own lifetime should be OK; otherwise, you'd really need to know author and date (and even for ones from his own lifetime, the more we can know about author and date, the better). That sketch is probably from life; it would still be good to say something more confident. I have no idea whether that painting is from his lifetime, but since it is in a museum the museum will have info about it, you should contact them. I don't know what you mean by "image block" and you'd have to ask questions about the policies of the English-language Wikipedia on the English-language Wikipedia (this is Wikimedia Commons, same Foundation, different project). - Jmabel ! talk 18:20, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

File from Rodovid

I noticed Wikipedia:Ivan Antonovich Kupreianov had no image and therefore found this image on the Serbian version of Rodovid. While I am nearly certain it is in the public domain (as the subject in question died in 1857) I don't speak Serbian and therefore would like to get someone else's input on the topic. MB298 (talk) 05:46, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

I don't think you need to speak Serbian to realise that this file has no source, authorship or copyright information whatsoever. There does seem to be some kind of kind of signature and date in the lower left-hand corner. LX (talk, contribs) 09:43, 15 November 2015 (UTC)
And that date seems to be 1859, so it's pretty safe to presume this is PD. - Jmabel ! talk 18:07, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

Including Theatrical Posters to an article I am working on (Ottaal)

I do not have any specific permission from the producers for the posters of Ottaal. I just wanted to develop the information available on the internet about independent Malayalam films and filmmakers. What is the license under which images in these articles Twenty:20 (film) and Kanal (2015 film) are uploaded. I could probably use the same licensing. Ivanspeeds (talk) 19:39, 15 November 2015 (UTC)talk 19:38, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

  • I assume this is about articles on the English-language Wikipedia Ottaal, Twenty:20 (film) and Kanal (2015 film), not something here on Commons. The latter two have posters uploaded on a non-free use basis, entirely within the English-language Wikipedia. That has nothing to do with Commons, the site on which you've asked this question. We don't allow files on a non-free use basis. If you click through to File:Kanal_2015_film_poster.jpg you can see an example you can follow within the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 23:01, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

My Flickr URL is not being recognized

I attempted to upload a picture via the "Upload work from Flickr" page, when the form is completed and I click upload; a box opens up and says; "The source must be a URL pointing to the image description at Flickr. Permission to use a Picture

Hello,

I would like to use the picture labeled structure of a generalized cell from this link: http://imgkid.com/nucleus-cell-diagram.shtml, to correct the mistakes found on the Cell Biology wikipedia page. How do I go about getting permission to use it? The current picture is inaccurate and not suitable for the topic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SBlai005 (talk • contribs)

It appears to be an image-search site, not an actual source anyway. @SBlai005: if the image you describe is the one I think it is, it appears to belong to en:Pearson Education; many of the versions online are cropped, but I found one with an intact notice “… © 2001 Benjamin Cummings …“; I guess it’s from one of their textbooks. Have you looked in Animal cells for a better illustration?—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:27, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Flickr images not found

I have a doubt, I found a image transferred from Flickr but in which direct link to Flickr redirects to a Page not found (at least to me). I added the category "Flickr images not found", because it says there exactly what the problem, "The images were however no longer available on Flickr, and their copyright status thus undeterminable." Thing is I was reverted without explanation, what did I do wrong?--Threeohsix (talk) 10:21, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi, This file was reviewed, so even if it is not available any more, it is fine. Yann (talk) 10:34, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) That file was reviewed to verify that it had appropriate licensing in place as of 2012 (see the pale green box at the bottom of the Permission section), so its status is therefore not considered to be “undeterminable”. I believe the not-found template should only be used on unreviewed files. CC licences are irrevocable, so once they’ve been verified they don’t need to be sustained or reaffirmed from the source.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 10:44, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
I was aware that it had been reviewed before, but did not know that CC licenses are irrevocable. That explains it, once you release it, you can't go back. Thanks.--Threeohsix (talk) 10:52, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
@Threeohsix: Just for future reference, you might want to be aware of {{Flickr-change-of-license}}, which exists specifically for marking images that are no longer available on Flickr under the originally verified license. Revent (talk) 06:19, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Flickr Upload Tool: flickr2commons

As the old flickr upload tool isn't supported anymore, I just used the flickr2commons tool. It stripped all pictures of the categories that I filled in by hand (as there doesn't seem to be any easy way to add them)... or what's going wrong? Thanks for the help, as this is clearly frustrating... --Ibn Battuta (talk) 14:04, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

PS: It's also very annoying that there's no way of checking if the photo has already been uploaded - I can only add description and categories, and then the tool gives an error message saying there's a duplicate. (The old tool gave that warning ahead of time, preventing me from wasting any more time.) In short: Is there a more suitable tool? Thanks, Ibn Battuta (talk) 14:11, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

Please try http://wikipedia.ramselehof.de/flinfo.php, I use it--Motopark (talk) 14:47, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, looks better... but requires downloading each file to my computer before I can upload it to Commons. Is there really no convenient successor to the old tool? (What was wrong with that one anyways?) Can't quite believe it... --Ibn Battuta (talk) 15:23, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Websites like Bollywoodhungama

I was informed about this Template:Cc-by-3.0-BollywoodHungama. bollywoodhungama.com allows user to upload pictures from its website. I want a list of such websites. --Galaxy Kid (talk) 10:11, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

The permission in question covers far more than just uploading pictures. That kind of permission would not be sufficient for Commons. What makes it possible to host some of the content from that site is that it is covered by a free license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute the content for any purpose. It's also important to note that not all content on that site is covered.
A list of websites with freely licensed and/or public domain content is never going to be complete, and licenses should always be reviewed. That said, Commons:Free media resources is a good starting point. LX (talk, contribs) 10:33, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Using photos from Wikimedia for Social Media

Dear Sir or Madma

I am employed as an aviation consultant and enthusiast. I wanted to know what the procedures were for using photos from Wikmedia to be used on website, blog or social media such as instagram, twitter, etc. My company's name is BMR Express, and I wanted to know what the procedures were for using a photos found on Wikimedia to be placed on a blog or Instagram. Do I have to attribute the photos (especially those that are under public domain)

All I am trying to show is different environments and setting of aircraft, airport and aviation related photos.

PLease advise accordingly what the procedures are.

Thankyou and best regards

Please see our guidelines for reusing content. How a photo should be attributed depends on the licence. For public-domain works there is no requirement for attribution, although the photographer is often mentioned to verify the provenance—or just out of courtesy. The licences used most often here are versions of CC-BY and CC-BY-SA, which require that the author be credited and that a link to the licence be included. Specific details can be found on each file’s description page. Some authors request notification when their images are used elsewhere, but there’s no legal obligation for reusers to do so. Our credit-line article shows some examples of suitable forms of attribution; there are also the Stock Photo Gadget (the large “Download”, “Use”, &c. icons appearing on file pages) and the download pop-up in Media Viewer, both of which automatically generate suggested credit lines for a given image, in either plain text or HTML.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 04:07, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Photo switch

Hello Hello!

I am brand new to wikimedia commons. I am in need of replacing a photo of a band I work with. The photo is a live shot from 2004 (so old!) and they would really like something newer up there. I have tried uploading/replacing the file via this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Upload/Replace_this_image

I get this error message:

You do not have permission to upload this file, for the following reason: The action you have requested is limited to users in one of the groups: Autoconfirmed users, Administrators, Confirmed users.

How do I go about requesting a photo switch? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Katwasylik (talk • contribs) 23:55, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

  • @Katwasylik: You shouldn't replace the existing image at that name. That is an accurate 2004 photo. In general, photos on Commons are only replaced because of technical improvements (color fixes, small rotations, etc.); misunderstandings like this are part of why we don't allow brand new users to replace images! Instead, what you presumably want to do is to upload a different photo here with a different filename, then change the English-language Wikipedia article so that it uses the new Commons file. If any of that isn't clear, feel very free to ask further questions. - Jmabel ! talk 00:50, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Failure to update a file

The image "File:Battles second punic war.png" has a typo in it: "Ilipa" is spelled "Ilpia" (and confusingly uses a font in which "I" and "l" are indistinguishable - but that's not relevant to my problem). I downloaded it, corrected it, and uploaded the corrected version. I still saw the old version in the page. I tried "refresh" in my browser; and then "shift-refresh". So I re-uploaded it carefully, tried the refreshes, and then tried a purge. But I still see the mis-spelled version. What am I doing wrong? Maproom (talk) 22:09, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Image from a 1927 Chilean publication

Hello! I'm wanting to upload this image, which is from a Chilean journal published in 1927 and now uploaded by the Internet Archive. The Flickr page says "no known copyright restrictions", but it wasn't published before 1923. Is it still usable? Howicus (Look at what I found!) (talk) 23:28, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Wait a minute...I think this file is mislabeled! The author is listed as Juilo Lamilla, who is a still-living shark researcher. It's actually from 1986! Plus it's talking about a species that wasn't described until 1937... Howicus (Look at what I found!) (talk) 23:33, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
More info about the book here. Howicus (Look at what I found!) (talk) 23:38, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
The year and the copyright information on the flickr account of the Internet Archive is often wrong. For the year of a periodical publication, they label all the issues with the first year of the journal, which gives things like wrongly labelling as "1927" an issue actually created in 1986. The meaning and value of "no known copyright restrictions" tags on flickr vary, depending on each organization. You must go to the organization's website to look what it means. In the case of the Internet Archive flickr account, that tag is misleading, to the point of being useless. When possible, go to the more direct source, such as the Biodiversity Heritage Library, which has a much better and more complete copyright information. In this case: "Copyright & Usage: Copyright Status: In copyright. License: creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/". -- Asclepias (talk) 00:47, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Commons can not display the latest version correctly.

I've tried 4 times. File:Most_popular_language_version_of_Wikipedia_by_country.svg this pic can not show its latest version correctly. Only after uploading a new version, the previous version can be shown as its real appearance.

Help, please. -- Paoting (talk) 08:28, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Category page for a photographer

Hi there. I'd like to create a page like this for the photographer Robert Sterling Yard. Several of Yard's photos are already on the Commons. I'm afraid if I start messing around with templates it's going to get complicated and I don't want to make a lot of cleanup work for anyone. Can someone give me a hand? Thanks! Magnolia677 (talk) 11:39, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

You should create Creator:Robert Sterling Yard, which you can do by copying the content of Creator:Lewis_Hine and changing the appropriate fields. Ruslik (talk) 20:07, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
First, check if Commons actually has photos by Yard. Yard has edited books illustrated with photographs by various photographers. Commons has a ton of files robotically uploaded by one user. Almost always, they are wrongly attributed, to either the flickr accounts who copied them or to the editors of the books or periodicals where they were published, instead of to the actual authors of the images. One must look at the original sources to know who were the actual authors of the images. On Commons, you'll find many such images robotically misattributed to Yard. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:28, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Uploaded photos were deleted

I edited a page that belonged to someone I know, and I added pictures, but they were all deleted. One of the photos is very old, the photographer is deceased. The others belong to the person in the photo. How can I add them and avoid deletion? — Preceding unsigned comment added by MaralOfZeitun (talk • contribs) 19:55, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

When did the photographer died in the first case? As to other photos, the fact that they belong to the subject is irrelevant because the copyright belongs to the photographer. Ruslik (talk) 20:11, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Sort by name of files

I need to sort the file list of uploads by a name, not by the date. Who can add a configuration? --Cherus (talk) 15:19, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

The prefixes in the categoriesǃ

We know that in the categories of downloaded files are placed and sorted alphabetically, but some files at the beginning of names have a prefix (Ru, De, Kz, etc.). We must to add in the settings of that categorization the automatic exclusion consoles for separating files alphabetically without those prefixes. Also, at the tag PAGENAME needs to provide same adds for the removal of that extensions and attachments. For exampleː FileːRu-leave name.ogg --> PAGENAME show all of this name, but(ǃ) if it possible, to program in the PAGENAME|FileːRu-leave name.ogg, it would be great for everyone. --Cherus (talk) 16:00, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure what you have in mind here. If you want a file always to sort differently than its filename, for everybody, you can either set a DEFAULTSORT value or a sort specific to a category, e.g. {{DEFAULTSORT:leave name}} or [[Category:Parent category|leave name]] - Jmabel ! talk 19:11, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Blue-loried Antwren

I posted three images of birds, intending to link them to the appropriate wikipedia page. However, I've since learned that the bird name has been changed. I've tried loading a new file on top of the old with the correct name, but it doesn't work. I'd like to delete the three files and start over with correct file names and descriptions. Why is there not a "Delete" button in Commons when one is logged in and looking at one's own contributions?

The three files are: Blue-loried Antwren.jpg, Blue-loried Antwren 2.jpg, Blue-loried Antwren (F).jpg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nomdeploom (talk • contribs)

  • There is no delete button because licenses are irrevocable. If we allowed people to completely go around the deletion process for files they had uploaded, sooner or later someone who was unhappy and stalking out would go on a rampage and delete thousands of file before he/she left the project, which is not the uploader's prerogative. (Courtesy deletions are usually possible for recently uploaded files, but I don't think that's what you want to do here, see below.)
  • There never have been files with the three names you give here. I assume you mean the files File:Blue-loried antbird.jpg, File:Blue-loried antbird 2.jpg and File:Blue-loried antbird (F).jpg.
  • I also assume you basically want to move the file to a different name, since the image will presumably be the same; you also may want to edit the text. Just use the {{Move}} template to indicate the new name you want for the file (place it on the file page; see Template:Move for details of how to use it). Someone should come along pretty quickly (usually within a day, in my experience) & move the file to the desired name. - Jmabel ! talk 19:20, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Accidental deletion of Category from images

I have just accidently deleted the Category "Ford Zephyr MkII" from around seventy images. Is there any way that this can be rectified other than by me manually adding the category back on to each image please? GTHO (talk) 05:59, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Been there, done that … You can go through your recent contributions and undo each edit. (Still tedious, but a lot quicker than adding the cat.) You might first try a search for something like "Ford Zephyr" and use Cat-a-lot to select the relevant files and move them back; the effectiveness of this will depend on how many of the names or descriptions contain the target string(s), and on how many other Ford Zephyrs you‘ll have to sift through and avoid selecting. Anyway, you might get most of them this way, and then check your contribution history for stragglers. (If the files are on your watchlist, the view with full collapsing lists will show which files have two edits by you, therefore were found & fixed, and which of them have only one, so weren’t found in the search.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 07:08, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

  • Generally, yes, with some conditions. Licenses for individual images vary. For images that are in the public domain, you can do so unconditionally. For images that are here on the basis of a free license, you need to conform to the terms of that license, and you'll need to check the individual licenses. Typically, that means (1) crediting the author (typically the photographer) in the manner they've specified; if they haven't specified anything, then "Wikimedia Commons User" followed by their username. (2) Depending on the license, either reprinting the license terms in their entirety or giving the name of the license and providing a URL indicating where those terms can be found. (3) If you make any modifications (cropping, colormapping, etc.) you are typically required to be clear what work is yours and what is the free-licensed work.
  • Note that similar licensing considerations apply for showing the images online on any site where you offer images for sale.
  • Speaking only for myself, and while in no sense required, if you are profiting in a significant way off of someone's generously available work, it would be a nice gesture to make a donation to the individuals in question and/or to the Wikimedia Foundation.
  • Given that this is non-incidental use and not online (so you can't "take it down"), be aware that while we volunteers at Commons do our best to make sure that all images are accurately licensed and attributed, we're not perfect. We make no guarantees, and you are on your own to verify the source of the image. For this reason, some re-users of images (though probably a minority) choose to bypass free licenses, go directly to the author, and offer them some sort of contract in which the author guarantees liability if the images are not their own, and receives payment in exchange.
  • This speaks only of authors' rights (copyrights). Independent of all of the above, in some cases either trademark or personality rights may limit use of particular images. For one example of each: (1) a company's trademark may be too simple to copyright, but still protected as a trademark. (2) If you were to use a photo of an individual in a way that implies endorsement of a product, you are walking on very thin ice under U.S. law. In some countries, personality rights are much more restrictive on reuse.

I don’t understand why the svg renders with the correct fills for all states when I open my edit of the svg, in a browser, from my local drive, but when I upload it to Wikimedia Commons, and load the svg from Wikimedia’s servers, it renders as the previous editor’s upload.

I think this is a time lag issue. Does anyone know why the time lag exists ? I am doing forced reloads all the time, and it doesn’t resolve it. It just takes time to resolve.

Thumbnail didn't load

Hi there. I uploaded this photo, and then uploaded a second (edited) copy. The thumbnail version of my edited copy doesn't seem to work, while the full-size edited copy does work. Not sure what went wrong. Thanks for your help! Magnolia677 (talk) 04:00, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

Since a couple of days we face a server issue. Reloaded images show only after a period of time. Until the server admins have solved the problem we have to wait patiently. BTW - I have uploaded another version with moire pattern removed. In case you don't like it, just revert the upload. -- MaxxL - talk 12:06, 21 November 2015 (UTC)
As of today, the problem has still not been fixed - are the server admins actually aware of its existence? (this is not an ironic but a serious question). --Edelseider (talk) 07:19, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Image of piece of segment on earth taken with screen shot tool purchased at mobile device by use of duly purchased Google map app

Can an image of earth , taken with duly purchased screen image tool of my mobile device , at a location with coordinates of earth chosen with duly purchased Google map tool ,be a violation of copyright?will That way Google publishing satellite images of all privately owned buildings on earth will also be subjected to copy right violation.?--Guglani (talk) 07:23, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

That something is privately owned does not mean that it is protected by copyright. They are two separate issues. I think that satellite images unlikely to violate any copyright even if copyright in some buildings does exist - the resolution is low and a view of any building from above is quite ordinary. Ruslik (talk) 13:13, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
No view has been expressed on first part of questionnaire i.e is screen shot of , Google Earth digital image taken using purchased mobile app ,at an earth location , a violation of Google copyright, can such screen shot be shared on commons?when Google cannot own copy right for low resolution satellite image then how screenshot can be considered a violation?--Guglani (talk) 13:42, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
A screen capture of a satellite photo displayed by the Google maps app is a derivative work of the depicted satellite photo. All of the satellite photos displayed by Google Maps are copyrighted works owned by one or more operators of imagery satellites. This imagery is in turn licensed to Google for display in their "Google Maps" application/web site under terms that are not compatible with free licenses. So you wouldn't be able to upload your screen shot to Commons, since Commons only accepts freely licensed works. To be clear, I am not disagreeing with Ruslik, since we're talking about different issues. That is, he is saying that if you personally were to launch a satellite camera into space and use it to take photos of the earth and those photos incidentally included some copyright protected architecture, that you could probably still freely license your satellite photography since any copyrighted interest in the buildings themselves would be de minimus. Of course, that is pretty much theoretical since it unlikely any Commons contributor will be launching their own camera into space anytime soon. —RP88 (talk) 13:55, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
Please see Commons copyright rules by subject matter which reads ✘ Satellite pictures and derived maps from commercial projects like Google Earth, Google Maps, bing.com, and others are based on a combination of free and copyrighted satellite imagery and are, therefore, not acceptable on Commons. Help Needed

I have uploaded many pics and some one has deleted all the pics.. without even inticating the reason or informing me . Its an insult. Please help ! Alwayssmileguys (talk) 03:47, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

  • It looks like your claims of "own work" were inconsistent with the EXIF data in the images. You were contacted about several of the images on your talk page, and didn't respond in any manner, so it's not surprising that someone decided you had nothing to say. User:Denniss did the deletions, so you'd have to ask him for anything beyond that. But given that you were contacted, given a chance to comment, and didn't take it, I certainly don't see the "insult". - Jmabel ! talk 05:34, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Picture upload

Hello, I want to do an additional article about the so called Graham escapement, as was used in many English grandfather clocks. In the article I want to use a drawing out of an old study book for watch makers. The book is from 1925 and is in my possession. Can I use this drawing? Is mention of the source enough? Regards, Hans — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jhavdh (talk • contribs)

Hi Jhavdh You will need to cite it correctly with author, date, etc. Also if you can find a copy of it in the Internet Archive you can cite it also to there to make it easier for others to read the rest of the book. Please message me on my talk page if you need more assistance, and don't forget to sign your notes with four tilde's like this ~~~~. That puts your name, clickable link and timestamp on all notes. Deletion of old version, possible caching problem

I have added a strong Gaussian blur to this image to avoid copyright issues (no Freedom of Panorama in Romania), but on the file page itself I'm still seeing the old image before the blur. I suspect this is just a caching problem, but I have no idea how to clear it. - Jmabel ! talk 20:25, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

This is a known problem (i.e. phab:T119038). I issued a purge for that image, but I too am still seeing a stale thumbnail in the file history. In my experience it can take as much as a day or so for all of the thumbnails to be correct when this bug manifests. —RP88 (talk) 21:04, 27 November 2015 (UTC)

Same problem with this File:Valle_Verzasca_Staumauer.jpg, the large version has been updated, but most other versions not. A purge (aka adding ?action=purge) helped only for some versions... Merci, 0000ff (talk) 10:28, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Annoying layout bug (no JS)

Hi there! I don't know whether this belongs here or somewhere else but here goes... There is a relatively new (a month or so perhaps old) layout bug that makes images appear in one column if one does not allow JavaScript. See illustration. You can enjoy the bug by disabling JS. (In Firefox, about:config, javascript.enabled) I wonder if this is known. Palosirkka (talk) 11:28, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

EDIT: Looks like this only affects the gallery tag on the page, the corresponding category was fine. That's a relief! Palosirkka (talk) 11:35, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Can't upload new version of file

Hey, I'm trying to upload a new version of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Networks_of_Major_High_Speed_Rail_Operators_in_Europe.gif The upload seems to work correctly, but the old file doesn't seem to be overwritten. I've repeatedly checked that I uploaded the correct verion of the file, and repeatedly cleared my browser cache, but the problem doesn't seem to go away. Have I hit some sort of limit on how many times a file can be overwritten? The map is rather complex, and needs to be updated/corrected quite frequently. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Silvercowcreamer (talk • contribs) 14:33, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Photo of a public statue in England.

Hi, today I took some photos of a statue in a public place in England. The statue is of an author, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_L._Sayers

I thought it would be simple to put this on commons and then the wiki page, but I am unclear about that after reading the message on the upload page. The statue cannot be > 150 years old, as the author was born 122 years ago, however the following page seems to say that is OK when taking a picture in England, but perhaps may be a problem if the picture is distributed outside England.

http://www.dacs.org.uk/knowledge-base/factsheets/sculpture-and-works-of-artistic-craftsmanship-on-p

Can anyone advise me if I can or cannot upload these pictures? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeneralJohnsonJameson (talk • contribs)

Hi GeneralJohnsonJameson
assuming that the statue is on permanent public display in public space, it is covered by UK's freedom-of-panorama exception. So, you can safely upload an image of it. However, you should mention the sculptor in the description. --Túrelio (talk) 19:58, 28 November 2015 (UTC)

Mere possession of a work of art does not equal possession of copyright. So, if the artist is not dead for >70 years or if he/she has not expressedly transferred his copyright to you, you are not allowed to upload a scan/photo/reproduction of the painting. --Túrelio (talk) 21:21, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

query re photo upload

HI

I have downloaded a photograph and have a licence for it from the National Portrait Gallery (wording below). Please can you tell me if I can upload the photograph to the article I am creating for Henry Astell law, 7th Baron Ellenborough?

Thanks

James

Please find, attached, a copy of the image, which I am happy to supply to you with permission to use solely according to your licence, detailed at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/

It is essential that you ensure images are captioned and credited as they are on the Gallery's own website (search/find each item by NPG number at http://www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/advanced-search.php).

This has been supplied to you free of charge. I would be grateful if you would please consider making a donation at http://www.npg.org.uk/support/donation/general-donation.php in support of our work and the service we provide.

The license they link to, the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 (CC-BY-NC-ND 3.0), is unfortunately, not compatible with Commons licensing policy. That particular Creative Commons license prohibits both commercial use as well as the creation of derivative works. Neither of those restrictions is permissible if you want to upload your image to Commons. —RP88 (talk) 20:38, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

It is not for making donations. If you're looking to donate money to the Wikimedia foundation, see wmf:donate. (Also, publicising your e-mail address is a great way to get more spam – if you spell it correctly. I doubt you have an address at the "gamil.com" domain. Not sure if this is the place to ask but I am looking to categorise the plaques often found at lookouts and other viewpoints that show the direction and distance to other landmarks. I don't even know what they are called, let alone where they are categorised. Some examples of what I mean are File:Quirindi Lookout Plaque.JPG and File:Blayney Lookout Distance Marker.JPG. Freedom of panorama in Latvia and currently uploaded files that may fall under it

Hey guys. Question about freedom of panorama in Latvia and Category:Monuments and memorials in Latvia (and just generally Category:Structures in Latvia). Wouldn't all of those files with sculptures and such be in violation of Commons as they are not freely licensed? That is, such pictures can only be used for non-commercial purposes? I ask because a similar file was deleted for this reason some time age, so it would stand that others should too. The same memorial alone has half a dozen more photos at Category:Biķernieki forest. But the parent categories have hundreds of images, so I'm not sure if I am missing something? —  HELLKNOWZ  ▎TALK  ▎enWiki 13:08, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Yes, it's likely that there is a lot of problematic content there. That said, some monuments, memorials and other structures may be too simple to be protected by copyright (which can be a difficult judgement call to make), for some, the copyright may have expired (which can be difficult to determine), and in some rare cases, the copyright holder of the depicted object may have approved publication and licensing of depictions in general or of a specific depiction. This complexity is why freedom of panorama related deletions are handled on a case-by-case basis – and that in turn is a likely explanation for the existence of a large number of potentially problematic files.
