Can't reply to a message

For the past day or two, I've had a Red 1 next to my talk page in the upper right hand corner, but when I tried to click on what may be a message, I couldn't get anything. Am I the only user with this problem? ----DanTD (talk) 19:18, 2 December 2013 (UTC)

I want to delete a test image

I have uploaded a test image to experiment with including a Commons image in an external wiki. File:Lcv alois 14 jul 2011small.jpg

Now I want to delete this test image again from Commons, to find out what happens in the external wiki once the file no longer exists on Commons.

Can some admin please delete the image? or rename it without leaving a redirect?

Flickr

Im not very sure of the licensing requirements for using photos of Flickr. Is Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivs 2.0 Generic sufficient for use.Blethering Scot (talk) 22:31, 29 November 2013 (UTC)

No. We only accept the following licences from flickr:
Attribution 2.0 Creative Commons (CC-BY-2.0)
Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA-2.0).

Can i ask what the difference is between the Attribution 2.0 Creative Commons and the no derivs one. Essentially I'm wondering if they have released the image in full but you cant cut or make changes to it whats the difference in effect to commons when the image is uploaded in full.Blethering Scot (talk) 22:55, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
That's really a fundamental principle here - we allow only free cultural works and modifiability is an important trait of that. It does have practical reasons: we often do need to crop images so that they show only a certain part (just look at Special:ListFiles/Cropbot to see how often we do that). Other images may be wrongly rotated, have bad colors, etc. - we want to be allowed to fix such things, and we want everybody else to be allowed to do so as well. darkweasel94 23:02, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Personally feel thats very much a technicality and when an item is on a commons licence we should be able to use with the stipulation it cant be altered. Surely we could have tags and rules in place to deal with that. For instance the image I'm looking at is available in multiple sizes so wouldn't need reduced in size, and wouldn't need anything altered at all. Why should everyone be allowed to edit or crop, personally think we should be looking at our own processes and seeing why technically we cant take these and forbid changed to be made. Where is the harm to the project, don't see it but there you go. Do you guys have RFC processes on commons like on en.wiki.Blethering Scot (talk) 23:18, 29 November 2013 (UTC)
Sure we do, COM:RFC, but I don't think you'll get very far. What you are calling a technicality I would call a fundamental underpinning of free licensing; reusers should be free at the very least crop and colour shift images as they see fit for the purpose they wish. I'm not a huge fan of the ND condition, and would oppose us hosting files with said restriction on Commons. Liamdavies (talk) 07:25, 30 November 2013 (UTC)

We can accept only Free content as darkweasel said above. Try to click the "No" buttons at https://creativecommons.org/choose/ It will show a message "This is not a Free Culture License". More info at https://creativecommons.org/freeworks (In my knowledge, from version 4.0 onward, CC ND licenses allow adaptations; but not allows sharing of adapted material which is a must for us.) This is what I'm not getting. The file is free, it simply cannot be amended. I'm not seeing why it not being allowed to be amended harms wiki when the content has been freely released. Even if a global policy its worth reaching out and establishing legally why it is not allowed when user gives rights. Yes, if you can get rid of the non-derivative restriction, please do so and upload it. Otherwise - there is really no point in discussing this because this is simply a fundamental rule of Commons. Gadgets especially for administrators

See Commons:Administrators#How do I become an administrator?. You can't use administrator tools until you are an administrator by making a successful request for adminship. However your account in Commons is only a few days old which makes it very unlikely your request would succeed at this point; usually at least several months and several thousand edits of experience is required. Reloading file accident

How do I remove the latest revisions from one of my files. I accidentally believed it didn't reload, so I reloaded three times, only to realize the revision already happened when I refreshed the page, and now there are extra revisions.   • Duplicates like this in the upload list are completely harmless. Suppressing them from view won't save any server space. This really isn't worth fixing (someone would end up putting out far more effort than it's worth.) - Jmabel ! talk 18:20, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Picture

I've made this picture on a flight from Amsterdam to John F. Kennedy Airport between Nova Scotia and the airport in New York. I took this picture half an hour after I took one overhere so it must be somewhere between Cape Cod and New York but I really can't find this place. unable to upload a photo for which I now have permission, but which was previously deleted

Today I tried to upload a photo for which I now have written permission. The system blocked the upload because the photo had been deleted months ago, when the permission had not been properly entered into wiki commons.

I wish to try again to upload the photo with its proper permission.

The photo is of Felix Fechenbach.

  • Just send the permission on (as described in COM:OTRS) and the prior upload can be undeleted. But I don't see any deleted uploads on this account, so I'm a bit confused.     Same comment about COM:OTRS applies, except: how does the museum own intellectual property rights to this? Ownership of a physical copy of a photo is completely unrelated to ownership of intellectual property rights. When was this photographed, and by whom? That's what would determine the rights.   • The only reason a file can be CC-BY-SA is because it is licensed that way. Under what context are you referring to a situation where a substitute template would be needed or appropriate? how to re upload deleted files

hello im new to wiki and i wanted to create a page on a character called Raava, i am having trouble uploading images to use on commons and want to know how to get them online and not deleted? I have full ownership of image, but upload blocked - due to (possibly wrongful) deletion of previous different image?

For a Wikipedia article about author Tess Collins, in September I uploaded a photo of her from this author's web site, for which I had permission for use on Wikimedia by Ms. Collins. The bot didn't like this, however, and deleted the photo. OK, so I took a photograph of Ms. Collins myself. It was made at a public event. I also obtained her permission to upload it on Wikimedia and to attach it to my Wikipedia article. The photo and its filename are different from the one the bot previously deleted, yet my upload is being blocked.

I am releasing this photo into public domain. I have ownership of it and have the right to do so. It fulfills every standard I see on your site, and know of, regarding intellectual property rights. Why is my image being blocked from being uploaded? -tashery

Wrong portrait across several Wikipedias

This portrait is used in several Wikipedia articles to depict King Louis I of Naples. The Latin text associated with the original image describes the man as King Louis, son and successor of King Philip, predecessor of the short-lived infant King John. That can only refer to King Louis X of France, Louis I of Naples' near contemporary and agnatic cousin. Is there a way to remove the image from articles about Louis I of Naples? It is very misleading. It could be replaced with this one, but removing the wrong one is much more important. Surtsicna (talk) 21:13, 4 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I created this file "Twist - Infrastructure" by doing a screenshot on www.Arcgis.com. The red sketch of Twist was already in the map, I did add the the colour two roads and the four tags of the road name. Now I have no idea how to declare this file, and how I can change liscense settings. Is "You may use any of these photos" enough?

I want to upload (some of) these images to Commons: http://www.cubesat.org/index.php/media/pictures On the page they say that "You may use any of these photos as long as you reference this website". I would say it is not sufficient permission to upload to Commons. Remember that our free license policy requires images that can be freely used and modified. CubeSat images probably fall under Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter#Press photos. MKFI (talk) 08:49, 7 December 2013 (UTC)

WWII personal photo

Hi, I would like to upload a photo to use in an article but I am unsure if there is a copyright problem. The photo is of my father repairing a WWII aircraft (the plane being the subject of an article) and was taken circa 1944/1945. The photo was taken by a friend of my father. This depends entirely on the country in question. Based on your user name I presume that you, your father and his friend are/were Australians. If this is the case then yes, the photograph is in public domain and can be uploaded to Commons: see Commons:Copyright rules by territory#Australia "Photographs (published or unpublished) taken prior to midnight on the 31st December 1954 are in the public domain." Use {{PD-Australia}} licence tag.

Can modified images be uploaded for a simple fair-use?

I have downloaded photograph a well-known journalist whose wiki page does not have the photograph. And I modified it. I am not sure whether it is okay to upload it here for fair-use (I am only using the term in an intuitive sense).

If it is not possible then it is really a difficult situation since you have to take the photograph yourself in case you want to put a face on a well known name. Please tell me if it is not okay to upload such modified images. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Contact '97 (talk • contribs)

  • Commons does not accept unlicensed, copyright-protected images on a "fair use" basis. Period.
  • Yes, it is difficult to obtain free licenses to other people's work, especially if the work is that of a professional photographer. Unsurprisingly, most professional photographers will not give away their work for free with a license that says that anyone can modify it and or use it for any purpose.
  • Some WMF wikis allow the use of certain photographs on a fair use basis. I'm guessing that you are referring to the English-language Wikipedia, although you don't state that. They do make some allowances for fair use, but as far as I know they will not typically accept a non-free use justification for a photograph of a living person. If the journalist in question is alive, then it is unlikely that en-wiki will accept a non-free photo. - Jmabel ! talk 06:51, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Tracking image use

The federal library I work for is planning to upload our archival photo collections to Wikimedia Commons, and I wondered if anyone could help me determine the best way to track the use of those photos. Would anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to do so? Is there any way to track how many times an image uploaded to Wikimedia Commons has been used or viewed? Glamorous can tell you the usage stats of all files in a category (or in a gallery or by an uploader) across Wikimedia projects. Non-Wikimedia uses don't show up there. darkweasel94 18:40, 10 December 2013 (UTC)

  • I'm not sure to what you would like to add information about your family. You are on the help page for Wikimedia Commons, the media repository associated with Wikipedia (and a sister project under the Wikimedia Foundation). This is a collection of public domain or free-licensed images, sound files, and video. Unless perhaps there is a photo of your family here that you want to caption more clearly, I can't think where you would appropriately add information about your family. But maybe I'm misunderstanding your question.   • Not particularly. It depends how you are uploading. If you use one of the tools like Flickr2Commons, that will be done automatically. If you simply download from Flickr to your machine, then upload to Commons, the wiki software will keep track of who uploaded. R C Gorman

If you search R.C. Gorman, you'll see a photo of one of his bronzes. You may note that in the description, it mentions the silkscreen of Gorman by Andy Warhol and says it is in a bathroom. It was actually in a hall, never in a bathroom. I realize I could edit this, but I have something more interesting. Would you consider replacing the bronze photo with one of my photos (that I took and own) of my wife and Gorman standing by the Andy Warhol silkscreen. Gorman was a personal friend and business associate of mine for several years until the time of his death and all material I submit about him is unquestionably accurate. I think this photo would receive considerable attention and embellish the page. If you approve, please advise how I can submit the photo and caption.   • I'm not sure how this relates to Commons. We can't handle materials like you are suggesting because they would violate Warhol's copyrights on the underlying work, but also we couldn't handle a photo of a Gorman bronze without permission for similar reasons. I can't really imagine we could get a release of rights from the Warhol Foundation and I'm unaware of a release from Gorman or his heirs although I could be missing something. The only representation we have of Gorman that I'm aware of is File:RCGormanAndJohnNichols.jpg, which we have with the permission of artist Vergel Bradford.   • Probably not OK, but I can't say anything definitive when I haven't seen it. Most book covers contain enough non-obvious design to be copyrightable. The only exception would be very typographically simple covers, possibly incorporating public domain imagery but no copyrighted imagery. - Jmabel ! talk 05:23, 16 December 2013 (UTC)

The only question would seem to be whether the uploading account is authorized to upload the work of Vlademirovka Photography.   • Not particularly. It depends how you are uploading. If you use one of the tools like Flickr2Commons, that will be done automatically. If you simply download from Flickr to your machine, then upload to Commons, the wiki software will keep track of who uploaded. Question about categories names ('to')

Hi

I'm a native German speaker and my English is only average. So I'm not sure, but for me it seems there are several category names which aren't right. Here are some examples:

So, my question: Is the word 'to' right? I would say yes if the title would be in example "... of Lucerne from 2010 to 2012" or even "... of Lucerne (2010 to 2013)", but "... of Lucerne to 2012" sounds unfamiliar to me. Delayed attention to problematic-looking files

What are you trying to do? Here on Commons we do not normally list people as divorced or married, but if we do somewhere, can you provide a link to that? Bots and batch uploads

What is the line between a bot requiring a separate account with bot flag, and a simple batch-upload I can do from my standard account with a semi-automated tool I'm currently hacking together (the parsing code is already pretty finished, I'm now doing the upload code)? The second one would have the enormous advantage that all uploads would automatically be added to my watchlist. Specifically, I'm writing a small Java program to do Commons:Batch uploading/Kurt Rasmussen - does anybody think I need to do that from a separate account and request a bot flag? adding a photo

Hi there. Today I uploaded this photo... File:Gerard Chittocque Brandon.jpg.

I'm not sure if there's a copyright on the photo. The photo is of a painting, and the painting shows a portrait of a US Governor from the 1800s. I found the photo on a website, and that website stated below the photo: "courtesy, Mississippi Department of Archives and History". So I'm not sure if it was ok to upload the image.   • Sorry but we cannot host that file here as it is copyright, we can only host images with a free license. There are two options here, if the copyright holder is willing to release it under a free license we can host it, the instructions are at COM:OTRS, but I very much doubt that will occur here. The other option is, depending on the Wikipedia project you wish to use the image you may be able to use it under fair use provisions. English Wikipedia's free use policy can be found at en:WP:NFCC. Problems with subcategorizing Albuquerque images

Hi, can someone please help me? I tried posting here a couple of weeks ago, but nothing came of it and my post was archived. Here is the original post I made:

I created the Flora of Albuquerque‎ and Animals of Albuquerque‎ subcategories, and placed all the images that were on the main Albuquerque page into those two subcats, but they're still showing up on the main Albuquerque cat page, even though I removed that main cat from each image. I've heard of transclusions, but I'm not clear on what they are, nor do I know how to fix them, and while I tried to contact User talk:Scoch3/Elena, she has not responded, as she hasn't made any edits since September 18. You say you want to change the category so that the category is no longer Albuquerque, New Mexico but Elena Gallegos Picnic Area? Why in the world would we do that??? The files in question pertain to the city of Albuquerque. This includes everything from aerial photographs, buildings, schools, military bases, the Sandia Mountains, signs & symbols, etc., just as any other well-developed category on a major city. Why would we change the name of the category from the name of the city to a picnic area? I just want to put the photos of those animals in the Animals of Albuquerque category, where they belong. I changed the template to remove the Albuquerque category and add the "Elena Gallegos Picnic Area" category as suggested by Liamdavies above. Please let me know if that fixes your problem.
They're still showing up in the Albuquerque, New Mexico category, even though that cat does not appear in their edit fields. Only Animals of Albuquerque or Flora of Albuquerque appears in their edits fields, so they're showing up in those categories also.   • "Open source" isn't exactly the issue, but free license is. You probably don't want to do that, either, though. Some individual-language Wikipedias do allow the use of images on a non-free fair-use basis (en-wiki does, de-wiki doesn't, you'd have to check them one by one). However, Commons does not allow this. How to fix my tiny display

Hi everyone. Can someone help fix my tiny display? I must have accidentally pressed some shortcut key, but now I have a display I can hardly read the print is so tiny. I can't find how to fix this.I only have this problem on Commons. Note to software developers: hot keys are the curse of every user's life because if you accidentally trigger one you have to research how to fix it. Just go easy on hot keys, right? British Museum collection

If it's ok, I want to upload this batch to commons. There is no problem downloading the images (thanks w:en:DownThemAll). But I don't know how to down the images coupled with each one's helpful alt-text. Pages like that have image and text alone in one simple HTML element. The problem is the full alt text is longer than the Windows/NTFS max filename limit. So I maybe somebody have an advice on how to automatically extract the HTML element and sort it locally. Is there a checklist or flow chart to help with handling sexual images?

When using Commons, sometimes via Wikipedia, I occasionally see questionable, usually sexually explicit, images. The image may raise these issues:

It is not uncommon for such images to have come into Commons via Flickr.

There is a huge amount of archived discussion relating to nudity and sexual images and it is difficult to determine best practices for tagging/editing such an image. For general image uploading there is a What can I upload graphic and for personality rights the identifiable people checklist is helpful.

What would also be very helpful would be a checklist or flowchart for handling sexually explicit images. The checklist can help with tagging for deletion, ensuring correct categorization and ensuring correct templates are added.

Does such as list or flowchart exist? Or does anyone have a concise and simple to understand guide to dealing with sexually explicit images. GR8DAN (talk) 14:02, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that permission is not at all sufficient for Commons to host the photo. We need permission to publish the photo under a license that allows anyone to use the photo in modified or unmodified form for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Good grief. The only way for Wikipedia to use a photo is if it's open for anyone to use and modify it? That's asking a bit much isn't it? The guy who owns the photo said Wikipedia could use it for goodness sake. There are many encyclopædias and many media repositories, but what makes Wikipedia and Commons special is that they are a free encyclopædia and a free media repository, meaning anyone can contribute and modify their contents, and it's all free to reuse. For that to work, anyone who wishes to contribute has to agree to allow others to continue to build on their work. That's great for Wikimedia Commons, but for anyone trying to upload new images to Wikipedia are out of luck. There should be an intermediary method for those who want only Wikipedia to use an image. Anyway, I was able to get the founder of the website/copyright holder to fill out the "email template" and I have forwarded that to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

Wikipedia does not accept photos that can only be used on Wikipedia for the same reason they don't accept articles that can only be used on Wikipedia. That's not going to change.

This appears to be a photo of a public figure taken in a public place with no expectation of privacy, and its use here does not seem to violate the subject's right of publicity or right to privacy. See Commons:Photographs of identifiable people. Lost image part

I needed a new version of the file "Perifereia Poloponnisou Numbered.svg" in the category "Locator maps of municipalities of Peloponnese region", so I downloaded it, added a missing number and renumbered the rest, changed some colours and uploaded the new file "Perifereia Poloponnisou RenumberedRecoloured.svg". Then I notice that the small inset map up left is missing from the new file, even if it is in place in the file I have on my computer. Whatever did go wrong? Convenience links: File:Perifereia Poloponnisou RenumberedRecoloured.svg, File:Perifereia Poloponnisou Numbered.svg. The reason is that the map there is a PNG image that in your file is linked from an external file, which of course isn't on Commons, but is on your hard disk. You will need to find a way in your SVG editor (I don't know about Adobe Illustrator which you seem to be using) to embed it directly into the SVG file. darkweasel94 17:02, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

1) I have used Commons app for Android but i'm not able to categorize my photos, how can I do it?

Presumably the {{Nouploads}} template at the very top of the category page Category:Piazza della Vittoria (Brescia). In light of that, I'm not sure why you think the file looks OK. There is no freedom of panorama for buildings in Italy, meaning one cannot issue a valid copyright license to a photo that is a derivative work of a copyrighted work of architecture without the consent of the building's copyright holder. Copyright help regarding File:Jonny-Polonsky.jpg

The file has been deleted, so I can't see what the file description page looked like, but it's likely that it was deleted because of the nature of the file itself rather than a problem with its description. You cannot upload other people's non-free works to Commons (which is the name of the site you're currently on, by the way). That includes photos you found on the Internet and photos of album covers, other photos, magazines or TV screens, for example. If by "this is my photo" you do indeed mean that you created the photo entirely yourself, you may request undeletion at Commons:Undeletion requests. If the file has been previously published elsewhere without a free license, you will likely be asked to send in a formal permission statement to our permission archive via e-mail. —LX (talk, contribs) 12:44, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

InstantCommons: smaller sizes of images

I'm working on a wiki (the LGBT UK History Project) which uses many images from Commons via InstantCommons (and has uploaded some). Some of the Commons files fail to display properly in our project, which seems to be because they are too big. Other than downloading the images in question, resizing them, and uploading them to our Wiki, is there a convenient way of using Commons images at less than full size? --Ross Burgess (talk) 11:15, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

uploading photos

Hi I am creating a wikipedia page and want to use a photo. How do I upload the photo to wikipedia, and then make it appear in the upper right corner of the article, above the "background information" section?

  1. You say, "The photo was taken by a friend of mine and he has given me permission to use it. Thanks." At least on Commons, if you are uploading someone else's photo, you'll need to provide evidence that your friend has given sufficiently broad permission. See COM:OTRS.
  2. If you want to upload the photo only to a particular language Wikipedia, you should ask the question on that Wikipedia. Assuming you want to upload it to Commons and then use it on Wikipedia, see Commons:Upload and ask any questions at Commons:Upload help.
  3. Then to include it in a Wikipedia article at upper right, you'll want to put something like the following at the top of the article page:
 [[File:YOUR_FILE.jpg|thumb|CAPTION]]

Linking same images but different formats

Help uploading photos to the Hebrew Version of Wikipedia.

    • Now that I think of it, I'm guessing from your headline plus your question that you want to use the image File:Rebecca Burstein-Arber.jpg that you have uploaded to Commons in the article. However you have already uploaded two unrelated images to Commons under that own name, and claimed the as your own work, which they almost certainly are not, especially the first one. Could you please clarify precisely when these pictures were taken, by whom, and how you come to have the rights, and if you do have the rights please upload under two distinct names.
    • I have no specific experience with the Hebrew language Wikipedia, and I don't read Hebrew, but I believe that once you have sorted out the legalities so that the image is not liable to be deleted from Commons, sufficient instructions can be found at he:עזרה:ויקישיתוף - Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 29 December 2013 (UTC)

uploading a photo

I would like to upload a photo that I know to be 50 years old. Do I need any permission to do so?

In most jurisdictions a picture of 50 years old is still protected by copyright. You will need to have permission from the photographer to release it into a free license like CC-BY-SA 3.0. Jcb (talk) 02:00, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

Another copyright question

A fellow on another board asked for some help with adding a photo to the Wikipedia article on Sir Harry Garner. Below is his response to my asking if he took the picture:

"My father, who died in 1965, took the picture. It is in my possession. I scanned and enhanced the photo. I can email you a slightly better resolution photo. It is scanned from one side of a 3D "Realist" format slide. If it went into public domain it would be fine with me. Photo credit should go to ... (his father)"

When can I add an image in an article?

Although I correctly uploaded pictures in Commons where I can visualize them, although I have a profile and do what requested, I still can't add the pictures in an article : when I try, it only shows other pictures, and the wiki media links just won't work.   • This is pretty vague. I assume that by "I can visualize them" you mean to say "I can see them" not "I can imagine where they would be." Since I have no idea what you are trying to do to add it to an article, nor in what (possibly Wikipedia? In what language?), I can't really think how to tell you what you might be doing wrong.
  • As you can see, I've had no problem displaying one of your images here. I used the wiki markup [[File:Vue du Dugas, Saint-Ambroix, Gard, France.jpg|thumb|Caption goes here]]. Again, I have no idea how your failed markup might differ.
  • Also, when you upload to Commons, you should add categories. For example, you might add the most specific existing relevant geographical category. - Jmabel ! talk 20:56, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

"Source" problems on a photo in commons

  • You say there that the photo is your "own work" but here that it is "from a family album" and presumably someone else took it. Who took the photo? (Not who is it of, who took it?) Are you that person's heir? If so, you need to accurately say who took the photo (and, to the best of your knowledge, when), and give a license such as {{PD-heirs}}. If you are not the photographer's heir, then you will need that person's permission, which can be sent to us as explained at COM:OTRS. - 01:14, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
