Uploading from Commons

Using Bryan's toolserver tool to transfer an image from Commons, something I've done hundreds of times, I've encountered an error I've never seen before. For File:Dining on the Seattle waterfront, circa 1970.jpg, when I click on "click this link" I get an unclear and misspelled error message, "The image page on Commons was never editted by the user who issued the upload." I have no idea what this means I should do. Does anyone have a clue? - Jmabel ! talk 16:09, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello, CC-0 is not the proper template if the author or copyright owner did not make a CC-0 declaration about this work. You can't issue this declaration in their place. The source says that the copyright status is expressed with the CC "Copyright-Only Dedication or Public Domain Certification" and nothing else. Although that dedication / certification is ambiguous and is now deprecated, it is what the source associated with the work. If we want to reflect that information from the source, we must keep it associated with this work and not replace it with something else. Commons seems to have the template:Prelinger for files like this (although I don't know how accurate that template is when it adds interpretions instead of just referring to the actual declaration.) -- Asclepias (talk) 02:46, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Metadata and batch uploading photos

My institution, NIST, would like to make our library's archival photograph collections available on Wikimedia Commons. However, we have a large number of photos to upload in batches. Each photo does have embedded EXIF metadata, but I wondered if there was a way, using the Wikimedia Commons batch uploading software, to automatically populate the title, author, and description fields with the metadata already embedded in the photos. This would save us a lot of time that we would otherwise spend copying and pasting the individual titles, dates, and descriptions for each of several thousand photos.

Photo deleted that was in use on arwiki

If you copy and paste that link in a new browser, it will show you some pictures I looked up on Abdullah Beg Benari, a Kurdish tribe leader. I want to upload this photo on the normal Wikipedia, because I know that the original owners of this photo is Wikipedia itself, so I can download this from Wikipedia (Kiwix) onto the normal Wikipedia. This is an original photograph by Wikipedia, so I think it is safe to put it on this Wikipedia. I am gonna use this to help improve an article. When you click on one of the links, choose the Arabic link that looks like this, here is the information: الموسوعة الحرة. That's how the link will look like when you choose a language, then try to type in Bradost or Abdullah Beg Benari. When you translate it, one of the links for the articles will say this: Your Abdullah Binary or this: عبد الله بك بيناري. For the Bradost version of the Wikipedia article, it will say this: Pradost or برادوست. But unfortunately, you will only be able to see it on the link in the subject bar, because it probably was deleted. Tell me if you give me permission to download it on this Wikipedia encyclopedia. Thank you! It recently got deleted, so I am trying to put this photo on this Wikipedia. Your link doesn't work and a Google image search for Abdullah Benari returns nothing. The place where you are posting this is Wikimedia Commons (not Wikipedia), and you can use any image that is hosted here the same way on any Wikipedia like you can use local images, you don't need to copy it to that Wikipedia. I think you misunderstood. Abdullah Benari was part of a Wikipedia article at another Wikipedia website (Kiwix). Since the image originally belongs to Wikipedia itself already, then can I put it on Wikipedia's articles? (I am an editor and contributor.) Here is a link that can help you. Check it out: library.kiwix.org. Then choose a language (Arabic, ويكيبيديا) and look up Bradost, but you will not find it there. Look at the article Pradost once you find it and look at it's history. Yes it seems like I misunderstood. Am I right that the article you mean is ar:برادوست? I can see in its history that some images were removed from that article in January because they had no source. If you want to reupload them here, you can do that, but be sure to provide adequate evidence that the file is licensed under a free license - that means at least giving a source. darkweasel94 20:14, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Yes, but it is entirely from Wikipedia. Plus what would happen if you yourself made an edit to the image, like made this edit yourself? Like used photoshop or other tools to create a new image based from an older one? This image was made in 1916. So it's license would be too old and would have expired. It was made nearly a century ago. Still, I will upload it from Wikipedia and show it to you, and you will say if it's okay. I can never guarantee you that it will be ok. Please give the source, author and date when you upload it, and if somebody nominates it for deletion (or tags with no source or no permission), you'll see that and be able to fix anything that's still missing or incorrect; or perhaps it's not compatible with our licensing policy, then we can't keep it here. What you seem to be trying to do is reupload the deleted image File:Abdullah Benari.PNG. As you can see from its log, it was deleted because it did not have the necessary informations, in particular the information about the actual source where it came from. It cannot be "entirely from Wikipedia". It had to come from somewhwere before it was put on Wikipedia or on Commons. This somewhere is the source that must be disclosed. It was uploaded to Commons by a user who had almost all his uploads deleted because they were either copyright violations or they did not mention their sources [1]. Please find an actual source (book, print, website, card, whatever) of this image (but not an unsourced copy of the deleted Wikimedia file) and provide verifiable information about its origin and its publication, so that its copyright status can be known. If the source and informations are provided and allow a conclusion that the image is free, you can ask the undeletion of the file on the page Undeletion requests. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:35, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Lost "Long Image Names in Categories" functinality

I appear to have lost the "Long Image Names in Categories" functionality. I've toggled it in preferences, and nothing happened. Anyone else having the same issue? Or know what I need to do to fix it, if it's just me? Ultra7 (talk) 09:46, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

It was me who made a mistake on this edit. The gadget silently returned execution. It didn't have any side effects except that the gadget did not work. I regret the inconvenience. Unix_history-simple.svg

I'm stupid and new to modifying SVG files. With File:Unix_history-simple.svg, the location of (0,0) isn't where it's supposed to be. It isn't in the top left-hand corner of the canvas; it's lower for some reason. How do I modify the location of (0,0) with Inkscape or its XML editor? AFAIK you can't, this is a known issue in Inkscape. A web search for "inkscape coordinate origin" gives some more resources. darkweasel94 04:33, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

I took a closer look and learned about the "viewBox" attribute. I think that the problem is the result of Timothy Gu modifying the height without modifying the viewBox values in June 2012. Update: When the height of the canvas was changed from 1450 to 1600, the height of the viewBox should've been changed from 1160 to 1280. I'll try to repair the SVG when I have the time. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 15:05, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Is wikimedia a good beginning ....

I would like a dynamic, public domain, repository that will display affiliations of people, corporations, products, groups, and career data. Example: Corporate: Pepsico - affiliations such as executive team, corporate board-members, products, parent company/subsidiaries etc. OR People: Career positions, membership of groups (CFR, Skull & Bones..), membership on corporate boards, thinktanks etc. The goal is to develop a publicly accessible data repository which connects the dots of people, corporations, organizations, products, that can be queried and/or edited (updated) by the public. Is wikimedia a good tool to begin this endeavor? I would hope that whatever and wherever this data begins to live that it will morph into an easy to navigate, visually intuitive platform that can provide people with a bigger picture understanding of the interrelationships of these (and perhaps other) mentioned categories.

Just don't want to waste time/energy starting in the wrong place but I understand that although there might be a better tool, ultimately, the speed at which the data could begin to serve the public may be delayed due to the learning curve of a more sophisticated software. Just want to see it get off the ground and hope others will make it soar.

  • Mediawiki (our technology) might be useful for this; as far as I know, Wikimedia (the foundation and its affiliated projects) would have little interest. This endeavor is for the global populace and the primary query is whether or not wikimedia (proper) is a useful tool to begin transferring data to. Anyone else have a more comprehensible response? This is commons help desk. Commons stores media files for all projects that are within Commons:Project scope/Summary. Other projects that could fit your criteria if you wish more than media such as data pages could be http://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Introduction , http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Main_Page , http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Main_Page etc. I hope these links help answer your OP.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:30, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

It is the name of a non-profit foundation and also embraces several websites (including the Wikimedia Commons, the site where you are asking this). Wikimedia's sites, and many non-Wikimedia sites are built using the tool known as MediaWiki, about which I would agree with Rimshot's comment below. So if you are asking about a software tool, that would be MediaWiki, not Wikimedia. If your use of tool was much looser, and you were asking "can I put this stuff on your (Wikimedia Foundation's) websites" the answer is almost certainly no. What you are asking to do is not even vaguely in the scope of the Wikimedia Commons; it doesn't seem to me to be within the scope of Wikipedia or Wikibooks; and WikiData is so far limited to a few very structured databases and while they could imaginably someday be interested in something like this, it's hard to imagine them being interested in the near future. It looks like you are trying to build an w:Ontology. The MediaWiki software can be used to create such structures, through categories and links, but as it offers a lot of freedom, it can get messy quickly. Take a look at Wikispecies for a good (non-messy) example. A good keyword to look for would be "Semantic Web", for example here: [2]. --rimshottalk 19:47, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Change WikiMedia Commons user name

My user name was successfully changed for Wikipedia, however, it did not automatically change my user name for Wikimedia Commons to match. How do I merge my user name for both accounts or change my Commons name to connect with my Wikipedia user name? Thank you.

ESRB icons

Opinion on ownership/copyright

Hi,

I have permission from the recipient of a letter to use it as reference. It was written in 1966 by a public figure, Diana Vreeland while editor of Vogue magazine on Vogue letterhead. Is permission required from Vogue to use it? Ms. Vreeland is deceased, may I presume that permission from her estate is not necessary?

  • Presumably a letter written in the U.S. in 1966 would never have been copyrighted, so I can't see any problem about uploading an image of it to Commons, assuming that is your question. As for using it as a reference, that would be a matter for whatever web site or other work required references. Normally, using something as a reference is just a matter of mentioning (and perhaps quoting) it, not a matter of uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 03:53, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

CTRL-Click isn't working properly

G'day there, any reason why this doesn't open a link in the background?

When browsing, it's FAR easier to open several links in the background, and then visit them after they've all loaded.

This is one of the VERY few sites which does this, and it's rather annoying.

Apart from that, I love the site, and all similar sites like Wikipedia.

Flickr upload bot goof

For some reason, the Flickr upload bot created File:Olate dogs - on wheel.jpeg for the picture I was uploading and File:Olate dogs - on wheel for the description. If someone could fix the discrepancy, I would appreciate it. --ThaddeusB (talk) 05:03, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Bulk downloading

I need to move ~600 files to Wikipedia as they are PD in the US only (not in source country), what is the best way to achieve this? Also they are all svg images and catdown only downloads png thumbs from a category... HELP! -- Nbound (talk) 10:01, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

why cannot use a file I already uploaded?

In Wiki Chinese, I tried all the methods to use the files that I uploaded, but failed.[Problem Description: Only File name is shown there instead of the picture itself]

(1)Not sure if it's because the file names are in Chinese? (2)If yes, how can I change the Chinese names into English?

Categories

If some but not all the files in a category belong in a parent category, should the whole category be placed in it? Sometimes that seems like it may be appropriate, other times not. Hamblin (talk) 11:26, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Or, more precisely, "usually not". Examples of exceptions:
  • A museum is placed in a geographic category based on the location of its building, but some images in the museum category relate to an off-site event.
  • A person is placed in a category based on an affiliation he or she had at some point in his/her life, but the category for the person includes photos from other phases of his/her life.
  • A city is placed in a country category based on who currently ruled it, but prior to World War I that country didn't exist, and some of the pictures are older than that.
So if you really need definitive advice, you'll have to provide a concrete example. - Jmabel ! talk 15:58, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
Well I do have a concrete example for a case that I think is done totally wrong right now at least in the Vienna categories: Category:U-Bahnlinie U1, Vienna (a metro line) has subcategories for each station of that metro line, but many of these, e.g. Category:U-Bahnhof Praterstern (Wien), are also served by other lines so that e.g. the categorization of File:Bahnsteige U2 Praterstern DSC07569.JPG says nothing about the line that the platform this file portrays belongs to. darkweasel94 16:12, 6 August 2013 (UTC)

Here is one: Category:St. Philip's Episcopal Church (Manhattan). (The "View history" page reveals a disagreement.) There are three pictures of one church (which is destroyed) and a fourth of a different church, extant, belonging to the same congregation. The name St. Philip's Episcopal Church applies to both churches as well as the congregation. The following categories only apply to the extant church:
  • Harlem, New York City
  • 134th Street (Manhattan)
  • Built in New York City in 1911
  • Churches in the United States built in 1911
  • Vertner Woodson Tandy
  • George Washington Foster, Jr.
  • Gothic revival churches in New York City
  • New York City landmarks in Manhattan above 110th Street
  • Buildings of religious function on the National Register of Historic Places in Manhattan

Finding where duplicate images are

I've been using the "Share images from Flickr" option of Special:UploadWizard to upload freely licensed pictures. Once or twice it has told me the upload has failed because a duplicate image existed on Commons. The frustrating thing, however, is that the error message doesn't seem to tell you what the image's file name is on Commons. One time, it was pretty easy to find the duplicate image, but now I've run into a supposedly duplicate image which I can't find anywhere. I've searched related categories but without any luck. I could just upload a cropped version of the image I suppose (I am only interested in using a small portion of the image), but it would be helpful to know if there is any better way to search for the Flickr image which is supposedly on Commons. Good morning. I would like to request your assistance with the images I uploaded ot the Commons and the Memorial in Commemoration of Famines' Victims in Ukraine wikipedia page.

On the project's website (http://mykiev.info/en/o-proekte), it is stated that "any reprint of text or photos on other Internet resources allowed only when placing an active link to the source". I believe that by properly referencing the Internet source, I am not violating any licensing rights. Please advise. Thank you, Newdata

Hi, the problem is the following: A permission to re-use is good an necessary, but unfortunately that's not enough. In order to keep those files on Commons, we also need permission to 1) modify the images/create derivative works from them and 2) use them commercially (i.e. sell them). Proper Photo Restoration Uploading Policy

I have been extracting images of Philadelphia from Stereographs that I find on the Library of Congress site. I usually get rid of the sepia color and turn it into a black and white photo, correct perspective and clean up scratches and dust. I have only uploaded 2 images because I wanted to make sure I am following protocol.

Do I upload the original stereograph cards 1st and then upload my photo as a revision or do I just upload my extracted photo with a link to the original in the details? (I did the latter on my 1st 2 uploads and don't want to proceed until I find out if I'm doing it right)

I have been routing through the maze of articles and haven't really found an article specifically about photo retouching and extracting policies. If you could direct me to one I'd appreciate it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bill Somogyi (talk • contribs)

In this case, where there is historical significance to the sterograph cards as such, I would upload the originals under one filename, upload your cleaned-up version under another file name, and link the two using {{Derivative versions}} and {{Derived from}} to link the two.
If you were just uploading (for example) your own raw shot from a camera and the cleaned-up version you intended as "canonical" then I would say to upload the original and then the cleaned-up version as a revision, because in that case there would be no independent interest in the original; it would be there just in case someone wanted to do a different retouching, so that they could have the maximum 'information' possible. - Jmabel ! talk 02:28, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

  • You'd need to give the name of the file or at least the account that uploaded it, or we won't even know what to look for. I'm guessing that the file was deleted because authorship & permissions weren't clear. What's wrong with it? Type it into the search window above and you will be told that "The following 9 files are in this category, out of 9 total." It's perfectly normal that this doesn't show up here in the text – it goes down to the end of the page where all the categories are being displayed. If you want to create a link to a category, you need to put a colon (":") before the "Category": [[:Category:Baptism registers]]. (I've corrected that in your text).

Adding a picture by the CDC (work of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

I have already seen some pictures at Commons that were originally from the CDC, e.g. File:Clostridium_septicum.tif. So I think it is allowed to add another picture (http://phil.cdc.gov/ ID#:14347), when using the correct permission. The picture I want to add is a high-resolution image (16.82 MB), so my questions basically are: Is it OK to add the picture and does it have to be the large size of the original? Though not relevant for the CDC, please always check that the website has no reuse restriction (which may be a separate issue from copyright) for downloading the large size images. Some institutions release "web quality" versions but are not happy to grant permission for "research quality" versions. Looks perfectly fine to me. I like the fact that you shortened the original description to the bare headline: I always get a little bit uncomfortable when people copy the full description of a picture from its source (be it CDC, Flickr or whatever), a) because the license the picture is published under does not necessarily apply to the description and b) because it may be biased (see the uploads from the german Bundesarchiv which have a special disclaimer for that or all those uploads from (US-/UK-/…-) military resources). Category names

I'm reviewing the categories about capitals (architecture). I know that the category names should be in english. But what's if there is not a proper english translation of a technical word largerly used in the scholar leterature in italian, french, spanish and german? This is for a tipology of capital that we call in italian "corinzieggiante" (that means similar to corinthian, that is: with some corinthian vegetal elements and some others transformed, like, for instance, palmettes instead of acanthus leaves, and so on). This kind of capitelle is not so rare, but there are not very many eglish-speaking scholars in this domain. I've tried on books I had and on google, but I couldn't find a proper translation in english: usually this word would be translated by a periphrasis, but not always in the same way. So: could I use the similar german locution "Korinthiesierende Kapitelle" (font: for instance the tilte of this scholar monography: U. W Gans, Korinthiesierende Kapitelle der römischen Kaiserzeit, Schmuckkapitelle in Italien und den nordwestlichen Provinzen, Köln Weimar Wien 1992). Does this have sense? I don't think right to put this kind of capitals in the Corinthian capitals categories or in any of the already existing capitals categories and I'd think it would be a pity to let them in the indefinite category of generic capitals.

We have to consider three separate things here: 1. Copyright status of the original document in the country of origin (Netherlands), 2. Copyright status of the original document in the United States and 3. Copyright status of the scan.
So they all died more than 100 years ago and we can go for {{PD-old-100}}

Hi, see Commons:Deletion requests. However, the manual itself should qualify as {{PD-USGov}}. The act of scanning such a document is just a mechanical reproduction and according to Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag does not create a new copyright for the person who scanned it (here: Warbird-Manuals). You can ask the owner of that website if they will agree to release it under a free license, such as {{Cc-by-3.0}}, and if they agree they should send a confirmation to OTRS. But as they have a big copyright notice at the bottom of their page, it's unlikely that they'll do so, and so most likely the image cannot be hosted here.   1. The file is lacking a link to the specific source page. http://www.ind.cl is usually not sufficient.
  2. The author must be acknowledged. The government is an institution without the ability to take photos.
  3. Where did you read that works by the Government of Chile are free? Public use may not include commercial use. And please provide a link to the public use-clause.

You really didn't have to open a separate discussion for each of these, since the issues are presumably the same for all.
For this one in particular, you give the source as http://http://www.ind.cl, but that isn't even a well-formed URL. The page http://www.ind.cl does not contain this image, though it might be somewhere on that site. What is the actual source?
Government works in Chile are not automatically in the public domain, so Canoe's answer is not necessarily on the mark. I'm sure the picture was intended to be seen by the public, but what is your basis for saying that it is public domain or otherwise "free"? Errors using Flickr upload tool

I have used Bryan's Flickr upload tool many times in the past without difficulty. For that ability, I am very grateful. Recently I attempted to upload a batch of photographs of Shemanski Fountain (see category here). Four of the images did not transfer properly. Today I tried to use the tool to override one of the images (using the tool the same way and entering the same file name at Commons). The image still does not appear. Would someone mind taking a look at the four images in the category link provided above and determining if there is a way to transfer the files successfully. The original authors and Flickr links are included on the file pages, but without actual images. Any assistance would be very much appreciated--the English Wikipedia article for Shemanski Fountain is currently undergoing a Good article review. Can't remove a stray character

File:Creep in cardboard.jpg has a stray 0 character between the {{Location}} and the {{Information}} templates. There aren't any stray zeroes in the page code, and other images I've uploaded with this pair of templates (e.g. File:Alexander Bagby House.jpg) have no such problems. What's happening here? Picture from the National Museum of Denmark

The National Museum of Denmark recently released a batch of images to the commons on Flickr, they have all been released with the tag "No known copyright restrictions" which the museum expands in a rights statement that i.e. state the following

"The objects entered into The Commons have no known copyright restrictions. They are marked "no known copyright restrictions", indicating that The National Museum of Denmark is unaware of any current copyright restrictions on the items displayed, either because the term of copyright may have expired, or because we believe, that no copyright restrictions apply.

The National Museum of Denmark does not warrant that the use of the photos shared on The Commons will not infringe upon the rights of third parties, as yet unknown, who may own the rights to these works. You are required to determine and satisfy copyright and other use restrictions that may apply to these works."

Given what I've seen around the commons, I believe these images are more safe than a rather large portion of the images hosted here, but I'm unsure what license to choose for this image. Well - compared to which Wikipedia? There are Wikipedias in a lot of languages, I presume you mean the English-language Wikipedia. And the answer is that Commons is a central repository, so it will naturally attract people from very different Wikimedia projects, and make them care about it - whereas a regular on the English-language Wikipedia probably does not care too much about the German-language Wikipedia, and vice-versa. In addition, I believe I read somewhere that Commons is the only Wikimedia project that's still growing, while the others are losing editors - I don't have a source for that though. darkweasel94 18:28, 19 August 2013 (UTC)

With an unsourced image, the safe position may be to assume a type of worst-case scenario, for example that the photographic reproduction was made recently and was first published in a country where it is copyrighted, by someone who is protective of his copyright.
  • The first version of "File:Waterhouse_a_mermaid.jpg" was from this site, and their copyright notice is on this page. However, the current version of "File:Waterhouse_a_mermaid.jpg" apparently comes from some other source, which was not disclosed by its uploader. So, the current image is indeed unsourced. Perhaps you can ask the uploader where he copied it from.
  • The image use notice of artrenewal.org is on this page.
  • "File:Draper-Lamia.jpg" is poorly sourced to a page that makes it practically impossible to find the original source.
You did not say in what country you plan to use images. Don't forget to verify what the copyright situation is in the country where you want to use the images, regarding the copyright status of photographic reproductions. You might want to consult a professional jurist of copyright law of that country. Even in a country where reproductions may not be copyrighted, unsourced images pose the problem of how comfortable you may be with using images without mentioning their original sources and photographers, if only for the principle of giving them moral credit for their efforts, and without knowing what the claims of the sources might be. Neither Commons policy nor the law of the USA places restrictions on these images. For reusers, the law of the country where the images were photographed doesn't matter: that's something the uploader might need to worry about. For you as a potential reuser, the big concern is the law of your country, since you could get in trouble if your country grants these photos copyright protection. So, the omission looks deliberate, because the comment there says, "Hide on the list of allowed types in the upload form that PDFs can be uploaded. Most pdfs shouldn't have been uploaded. You're free to upload public-domain book covers as images to Commons. Covers that are in the public domain normally reach that status either because they're too simple for copyright (for example, File:Becuna 21.JPG) or because they're old enough that copyright has expired. Nein, diese Lizenz ist nicht zulässig. Wir erlauben nur CC-Lizenzen ohne "nc" oder "nd" - cc-by-sa ist also das Strengste, was wir an CC-Lizenzen erlauben. Question about permission for photograph

I want to upload a photograph of an individual that was taken by a professional photographer for press releases from another organization. I was given the photos and allowed to use them in any way desired. I would like to upload to Commons and use on the Laxmaiah Manchikanti article. Is this acceptable?

This is only acceptable, if you have or can get a written permission from the photographer for all purposes and users. Commons:OTRS has more information about this process and an example mail for the permission statement. Question about this file

Hello, I have a question about this file, which looks like a screenshot of a tv serie. It says the file is verified with OTRS, but in the metadata it also states that manipulation of the file is not allowed (I thought this was also necessary for the commons license). Is this really properly licensed?

Aloha! I had to read through a ton of spam before I found the passage you're referring to. The file is properly licensed. Hi! If you want to upload the logo to Commons (I don't know what the policies on the Dutch-language Wikipedia are), you need a permission not just "for Wikipedia" but for everyone (not just Wikipedia or Commons) to redistribute, even commercially, in modified or unmodified form from a copyright point of view (trademarks are ok) - please see COM:L for what restrictions are allowed. If you have that, upload it to Commons with the license they allowed you to upload it under (such as {{Cc-by}}), add {{subst:OP}} to the information page and have an authorized representative of that company send a confirmation of the license to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. darkweasel94 19:42, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Deleting files I have uploaded

I have read the sections on deleting files but I still don't know what to do. I am trying to upload a smaller version of one image and so far have uploaded the same image three times. I want to delete all three of them. I don't know how to do it. There is no copyright issue; I own the images. I also don't know where to look to find the answer to my question if an answer happens.

You can request the deletions by adding the template Speedydelete in the description pages of the files. In the parameter of the template, specify your reason (ex.: deletion requested by the uploader). It should not pose a problem for your recent uploads from today. Dealing with misleading valued image

I've read COM:VICR and associated pages, but haven't been able to find anything about misleading images that already are listed as valued. When first elected, do they remain as valued regardless? The reason I'm asking is this. A nice illustration, but it does not show Arborophila orientalis, meaning that its position as a valued image for that species is questionable to say the least. Should it be left as a (misleading) valued image for the wrong species, "de-listed", or should one change the valued image category to the right species? RN1970 (talk) 19:11, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

That's an interesting legal question that a couple of days ago spawned a debate in a DR. Nothing really definitive can be said about it - if you are sued, the court will probably consider how similar they look to each other, the complexity of the original, possible fair use defenses, etc. This is something you may also want to read at least if you are in the US: en:Barack_Obama_"Hope"_poster#Origin_and_copyright_issues. Yes, the painting is your property and you can sell it. However, as the painting is derived from the photograph, both the photographer and you have contributed to the work to some degree, and are authors. Consequently, you must respect the terms of the license granted by the photographer. Different images on Commons have different licenses, so read what the license of the image says exactly. For example, licenses often require that, on the painting, you credit the photographer, specify the license, etc. Some licenses may also require that you place the painting under the same license, in which case someone who buys your painting could, for example, make a sculpture derived from it, as long as he credits the photographer and you. For more information, please see the page Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia. There is a 20 month backlog of requests for name changes (usurpations) on the Commons that are all marked as being "in progress" (Commons:Changing_username/Usurp_requests). Have no bureaucrats or admins looked at this page since January 2012? This is ridiculous! It took 7 days for my username change at en.wiki. Maybe in 2015 I'll hear back? My now deceased father hired a photographer for PR-Portraits of himself as he was a public figure. Who owns the copyright in a work for hire situation? The subject that commissioned the work or the photographer, that has been paid to take the portraits? The second most spoken language in black Africa is Haussa, and doesnt appear to be listed for the languages. If Klingon is present under languages, Haussa definitely should be in there. Firry Floyd

All languages should be available for Babel boxes. It just takes some manual labor to add them. I am a very new wikipedia contributor, so apologies in advance for my rather naive questions.

I have already uploaded the image (linked to above) once before and I'm worried about it being deleted again. The copyright holder has e-mailed permission for this file, and two other files to be released into the public domain, however only one of the three files has not been deleted. The three images were linked to on my sandbox page Stochastic Portfolio Theory (working draft). Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

Also, once this deletion issue is resolved I would like to know how I add this sandbox page to the main Wikipedia article area.

Hi Jonhanke496, and welcome! Just to clarify: this place isn't Wikipedia (an encyclopedia), it's Commons (a media repository whose files can be used to populate Wikipedia articles). That's also why your link didn't work - if you want to link to the English-language Wikipedia from here, you need to add :en: to your link: en:User:Jonhanke496/SPT. As for your question: Two of your uploads seem to have been deleted because COM:OTRS didn't receive an email with evidence of permission - if they do receive one this time, you should be fine, and if you're absolutely sure they should have, you can ask at the OTRS noticeboard what happened. Doing the right thing with a company page

I have been asked by my client to improve content on its site ensuring it meets Wikipedia's standards.

There are multiple issues that have popped up with their entry article, namely :

This article relies on references to primary sources. Please add references to secondary or tertiary sources. This article appears to be written like an advertisement. Please help improve it by rewriting promotional content from a neutral point of view and removing any inappropriate external links. This article contains wording that promotes the subject in a subjective manner without imparting real information

I would like to start editing right away, but I am conscious of the Wikipedia philosphy that this should be a collective effort from the Wikipedia community. Can you guide me as to how best to deal with this and improve content ?

Nominating files for deletion

Let me first say that I'm more familiar with en.wikipedia than here since I'm there more often than here. Clear? Good.  :)

Every so often I run across an edit on my EN watchlist where a user has added an image to a page, usually a biography. They uploaded it to Commons as well as images of several other people. They're often screenshots, images of the character the real person played (in movies, TV, etc), or taken from the person's official site, Twitter feed, etc. Then they'll say that it's their own work and release it under a free license. So, I check the user's contribs here and see all the files and nominate them all for deletion.

Since the deletion date is a week away, the images get added back to the articles on EN again (and again and...) and I remove them again. The whole time that they're up for discussion, I don't generally see any voting or comments at all. It's just Nominate, Wait, Deleted. After the week is up, the files get deleted and that's usually the end of that.

What I'm wondering is if there's a faster way for the more obvious cases. Do I have to go through this week long process every time? If you check my contribs (Dismas (talk · contribs)) you'll see I've tagged several images lately. Thanks, Dismas (talk) 02:58, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

For deletions of obvious copyright violations, don't open a discussion page if there is nothing to discuss. Instead, tag the files with the template Copyvio. In the parameter(s), write clearly the specific reason for the tagging (for example, if it's obviously a screenshot of a copyrighted TV programme). Provide the evidence when possible (such as a link to a likely source if it's a file copied from the internet). And notify the uploader on his talk page. Please see the page Commons:Deletion requests/Speedy deletion and the other pages linked from there for more information.   • Was it actually published before Dec31, 1956? If they took the picture but never published it (which is possible) then it would still be protected. Also from looking at the website I'm not certain if they're claiming ownership of the copyright to the actual photo. The reason I say this is because they say the original photo is actually a reproduction. This makes is seem like they own a copy, not the actual photo itself. CSD Removals

I've only started working on marking files on Commons so I'm not sure of the process. If I mark a file for CSD for copyright violation does it get reviewed by an admin? Or can any user come along and revert the edit? Thanks Caffeyw (talk) 17:22, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Just to be sure: We're talking about "speedy" deletions here, right? By adding one of the speedy-templates the file ends up in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion or one of the subcats – that's where admins look for files for speedy deletion. If the template is removed, it's not in the category anymore. Technically, anyone can remove the template. So theoretically, the uploader could remove the template in order to prevent the file from being deleted and nobody would notice (unless somebody else has it on their watchlist). --El Grafo (talk) 20:41, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
It depends. Files tagged for deletion will be reviewed by an admin. However, any user can replace a speedy deletion tag with a regular deletion tag if he thinks that the case is not obvious and should be the object of a discussion. Also, an edit can certainly be reverted by any user if the edit is obviously improper. For example, if you were to put a speedy deletion tag on a file that has already been the object of a deletion discussion with a result of "kept". If you want to contest that previous decision, then the proper procedure for you would be to start a new regular deletion discussion and provide a rationale for your deletion request. Another example is if you were to put a no permission tag on a file whose copyright status indicates PD-texlogo. That status does not imply a permission, so if you want to contest the validity of that status, you should either use the copyvio tag, if you believe that it is a very obvious copyvio, or a regular deletion tag, if it's not obvious or if it is a type of file similar to other files that are considered valid per previous discussions. Please see the deletion guideleines for more information. Hello. Given the date and time of the message, I believe User:Caffeyw's question concerns my review. (Although, even if it does not, maybe it is a good idea that I mentioned it.) Caffeyw had put {{No permission since}} on a large number of items in Category:Microsoft Windows logos, some of which had previously survived deletion nominations more than once. As you know, {{No permission since}} is to be put on images that claim to have author's permission for publication but do not exhibit an evidence to that effect. Well, this was not the case. In other words, the CSDed images in question did not make such a claim; rather, they were tagged with {{PD-textlogo}}. The fate of these images needs to be decided with a COM:DELETE. Like I said, some of these images had previously survived deletion nominations.

upload photo to "Wiki Loves Monuments"

I went to the Wiki Loves Monuments project and went to the "Find a monument to photograph" page to find one to shoot nearby. I found one with a white pin that needed a photo and I went out and got the shot to upload, clicked on the white pin and followed the instructions to upload the photo which BTW is location ID 97001497. I know my photo went somewhere, but after some research I found it landed in Wikimedia Commons (although I started in Wikipedia) and the white pin where I thought I was uploading the photo is still white now, 2 days later. Am I missing something here? Or does it just take longer than I expected for such content to find its home?

That's really where the people of the contest can be found who can answer questions about everything relating specifically to that contest, including how the updates to the map work. Hola. I have found this picture surfing on the Internet. I have search It in commons, using Google Images, and I couldn't found it. ¿Can I upload It on Commons? (not a fair-use-issue) It is supposed to be Hitler when he left jail the 20, november 1924, in w:en:Landsberg am Lech (actual Germany). So I guess the copyright cannot apply, but I´m not sure. ¿It is a free-use picture because of its age and location? Gracias! Albertojuanse (talk) 22:45, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

It depends what the copyright status is. The Library of Congress apparently attributes this photograph to Heinrich Hoffmann, whose photographs are not accepted on Commons, as explained on the page Category:Heinrich Hoffmann, unless they are photographs licensed by Bundesarchiv. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:24, 28 August 2013 (UTC)
