I am really new to this web . And i have one question. If i am using photos from this site what i have to put_ autor? the site? Or there is the restriction to use photos?? thanks . For example i want to use File:Zu den blauen Flaschen painting c1900.jpg . What i have to put for credit???? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ukrainecanada (talk • contribs) 2012-03-01T18:07:07‎ (UTC)

Hi Ukrainecanada. This particular image is public domain because its copyright has expired. Which means, you can use it for any purpose and without having to credit anything. Can you see the button: Use this file? If you click on it it will tell you how to credit images you want to use. hope it helps. cheers, Amada44  talk to me 18:43, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
In general: read the file description page. It tells you the copyright status (although you need to note that there is no guarantee that the copyright status mentioned is correct). See this help page for info about your question: Commons:Reuse. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:54, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Máscaras para un Concierto.jpg

I have uploaded several jpg files of the covers of the books of the author. These files are in my computer (I scanned the books) and I'm editing this page on behalf of the author (my husband). He used the same files for his webpage. Who has the Copyright? -- Guantug (talk) 02:07, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

This is not easy to answer. To solve this I need some answers first:
  1. Who did the photograph for the book cover? Did the photographer give permission for the book only?
  2. Who did the design of the cover?
  3. Who owns the copyright of the book? Your husband or the publisher? Note: It is very likely that your husband has signed a contract with the publisher giving them the copyrights of the book.
Mostly book covers need the permission of the publisher. hope this helps! cheers, Amada44  talk to me 08:50, 2 March 2012 (UTC)
Just to rephrase Amada's correct answer: There are several person who could own copyrights on photos of book covers: The cover designer, the cover artist, the writer in case there is more than a few words text on the cover. From all those people you would need a permission to upload a book cover. Note that the copyrights belonging to the cover could be transferred (partly) to the publisher by contract, so it is possible that the original authors cannot issue use permissions anymore. Note: If you made a scan by yourself you do not need permission from yourself. ;-) --Saibo (Δ) 15:50, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Sockpuppets

Is it illegal to have sockpuppets here on this Wiki? If yes, why? 91.7.55.99 11:44, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

See for general help on this topic: en:WP:SOCK or de:Wikipedia:Sockenpuppe (Commons does not - to my knowledge - have an own page about this). You will find why it is discouraged to use socks in most cases (except for your feet). Misuse will lead to a block of maybe even all of the sockmaster's accounts. How to use wiki markup to make an image stay at its present version and not be updated

Hi. For a Wikinews article I'd like to know how I can make an image stay at a current version and not be updated when the image itself is updated. For example, I'd like File:Republican Party presidential primaries results, 2012.svg to stay at that version in order to let the readers know what it looked like today, on March 4. I know I can simply download the current version of the image and reupload it, but maybe there is a simpler way to do this and simply make the wiki markup make the image just be of the current version and to not be updated with subsequent image uploads? Is there such a way? JaumeBG (talk) 08:41, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't think that's possible. The simple solution is probably the other thing you said : copy the version you want, upload it as a different file and use that file. But I'm not an expert. Someone might come up with a better solution. -- Asclepias (talk) 10:50, 4 March 2012 (UTC)
Precisely. And if you want to demonstrate the accuracy of this as a state of the other image, link the other image's page (which you'll need to do anyway for rights reasons). - Jmabel ! talk 17:38, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Author Photos

I am an intern of the publisher of an author's profile who i am updating. I have an author photo from their website, the copyright of which is: © Cathy Kelly 2012 Harper Collins. All rights reserved Would I be able to use this photo, as I am working with the publisher?

Are you asking if you can upload it here on Wikimedia under a free license from your own initiative? Then, the answer is no, you can't. As an intern, you would not be legally authorized to release, give away, or sell the property of your employer and/or of the author without their explicit consent. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:01, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
But you can work with someone who is authorized, and if they are willing to release the photo under an appropriate license, see COM:OTRS for how to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 16:10, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Inscrutable template

Please help I can't get the coordinate data right on these files: File:Dik Evans 2011.jpg, File:Magnapop reunion 2011.jpg, and File:Virgin Prunes 2011.jpg. Can someone please fix these? Feel free to explain how {{Location dec}} works on my talk. Thanks. Koavf (talk) 19:05, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Given that you appear to have the coordinates in degrees/minutes/seconds (DMS) notation, you probably want {{Location}}, not {{Location dec}}, which is for decimal coordinates. Hope that helps. – Jmabel ! talk 01:02, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Code to extract copyright information from a commons page

Hi! I'm working on a project that will use content, both images and sounds, from Wikimedia Commons. I'm looking for a good way to extract all necessary information to comply with the licence requirements of a given file. Ideally, I'd like a Python function get_credit_line("some_file.png") that downloads and parses the meta information and helps me format html with links to all the right places (e.g., licence information, original source etc.), similar to the format on Commons:Credit line. Thankful for all suggestions – would be easy enough to write myself, but I thought I'd check if there was already good code that handles all sorts of situations. Hope this is a good place to ask. /Skagedal (talk) 12:15, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

The simple answer is that there is no way. I told Erik Möller (who had the idea for Commons) that we need something special here; E.g. credit information stored in separate table fields but AFAIK nothing happened yet.
I wrote some JavaScript tools (look for queryFile: function ( title ) { and licenseRecognization) that try to extract most commonly used templates/categories set by these templates. Magnus Manske did the same in Wikipic, Stockphoto (look for get_author_attribution: function (use_html) { and below). -- RE rillke questions? 15:27, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, that is just the information I needed! I'll take a closer look at your code and see if I can get some working Python code. /Skagedal (talk) 19:38, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
You are welcome. If you wrote your python-function, would you publish your source code? That would be great! -- RE rillke questions? 20:58, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Of course! I'd put up code with a free license in a GitHub repository. I'll let you know when it happens. /193.180.9.6 08:29, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Orthodox Churches

I've identified a bit of a mess in some categories, but I am not confident I have the expertise to sort it out. I see that Category:Orthodox Church in America was changed to Category:Orthodox Church in North America. However, "Orthodox Church in America" is actually the proper name of a particular Church (see http://oca.org). Now, Category:Orthodox Church in North America contains both categories that are specific to that Church (e.g. Category:Dioceses of the Orthodox Church in America‎) and ones that are not (e.g. Category:Eastern Orthodox Christians from the United States).

If someone more expert on the topic would sort out the mess, that would be good. I am almost certain that properly sorting this out will involve creating some new categories, and it may turn out to be a large project. If no one else takes it on within a week or so, I'll give it my best shot, but, as I say, I'm not expert on the different divisions of Orthodoxy, just clueful, and I would expect not to get it entirely right. - Jmabel ! talk 21:27, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

I've looked a bit closer, and it is a true mess. Unless someone has a better plan, I'm inclined to reorganize the upper reaches of this part of the Commons hierarchy in line with the organization of these categories in the English-language Wikipedia, which seems to me to have this tremendously better sorted out. - Jmabel ! talk 08:10, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
  • I'm canvassing around a bit for people who seem likely to be able to help on this, but if anyone knows someone who might be able to help out, please do prod them with a pointer to this section. - 08:14, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
  • It looks to me like the English Wikipedia categorization, for instance, starting from here, is perfectly fine.--Ymblanter (talk) 18:12, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
    • Ymblanter, I basically agree with that, but Commons category hierarchy has problems even higher up (e.g. not distinguishing Eastern Orthodox from Oriental Orthodox). - Jmabel ! talk 01:57, 21 February 2012 (UTC)

Lacking much feedback here, I am going to start having at it. I hope no one is terribly unhappy with where I take this. I will use the categories in the English-language Wikipedia as my model, because they look much better thought out. - Jmabel ! talk 06:11, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

I've gotten started and am making some progress, but I'm running into all sorts of categories that I can't make head or tail of: similar matters handled in very non-parallel ways, etc. I'm going to start a page at User:Jmabel/Orthodoxy work in progress. Although it will be in my namespace, others should feel free to contribute. - Jmabel ! talk 07:57, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

I have made a lot of improvements in a lot of places but, ultimately, someone who knows more than me needs to look at sorting out the whole area of Eastern and Oriental Orthodoxy categories. For a typical example, for File:Hama-RomanOrthodoxChurch.jpg, the description says it's a "Greek Orthodox" church, but the category says "Antiochan Orthodox". I certainly don't know the subject well enough to disentangle things like this, and there are literally hundreds of comparable issues. - Jmabel ! talk 01:31, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to use this picture for a flyer "Altsachsenhausen/Frankfurt". Which copyright details do I have to add? "©dontworry"? Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.180.139.162 (talk • contribs) 16:16, 29 February 2012‎ (UTC)

The file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license, so you need to state the author (Dontworry) and you need to make clear to others the license terms of the work (e.g. by including the text "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/"). Mentioning Wikimedia Commons is not required, but makes it easier for others to find the original version. For print media, I usually suggest a byline along the lines of "Image credit: Dontworry/Wikimedia Commons. License: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/" If you have room, you could also mention the name of the file, but again, that's not required. LX (talk, contribs) 16:35, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Thank you. There is very little space on the flyer (105*148 mm). And the photo is only 27*18 mm. Is it possible to state only "©Dontworry/Wikimedia Commons"? Thank you again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.180.139.162 (talk • contribs) 17:35, 29 February 2012‎ (UTC)

No, because you must make clear to others the license terms of the work. See section 4 (a) of the license: "You must include a copy of, or the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) for, this License with every copy of the Work You Distribute or Publicly Perform." So "Dontworry" and "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/" must be part of the byline. LX (talk, contribs) 17:55, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Or you can contact the copyright holder and try to negotiate a different licensing arrangement between the two of you. - Jmabel ! talk 01:18, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi, the description on this map says 'A map of civilizations, based on Huntington's "Clash of Civilizations".' but it seems like a lot of edits made into this map are based on the editors' respective opinions and not according to this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clash_of_Civilizations#Major_civilizations_according_to_Huntington, which I think is more of a reliable citation than the opinions of the people who edited the map. For example, in the map shown at the Wikipedia link I provided, it shows that the Philippines is a crossroad of Sinic, Western, and Islamic civilizations though in the map at Civilizations_map.png, it shows that the Philippines is a Latin American civilization, a thing that is not seen in Huntington's book nor can be seen when one goes inside the Philippines. It's not only the Philippines that I'm concerned of but as well as the other countries such as Nigeria (Islamic and African) and the others. Can someone please fix this? Thank you very much and I'm asking for help since I have no experience regarding about maps. Thank you again and I hope somebody can help me. Sairyu (talk) 07:03, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

I see two maps on Commons: File:Civilizations_map.png which you refer to, and which has been variously modified by editors; and File:Clash_of_Civilizations_map.png which was (or claimed to be) originally as in Huntington's work, was variously modified, and was then reverted to the original. The article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Clash_of_Civilizations#Major_civilizations_according_to_Huntington uses the latter. It seems to me that this is all reasonable, and does not need fixing. Ujeda s Stola

I moved the File:Ujeda s Stola.jpg to File:Pyrrhocorax graculus Ujeda s Stola.jpg since the image was not of a raptor as claimed. Trouble is, I can't make sense of the original file name, which may or may not be Slovenian. If it's an incorrect identification, it should be nominated for deletion, but for all I know it could be the name of the location, or whatever. Can any polyglots help? Jimfbleak (talk) 13:36, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Google translate brings "Snappish from the chair" in Slovenian for the original file name, but I don't know how reliable that is. Other related languages identify it as something to do with a table, such as "Bites from the Table" in Serbian or "Travels with tables" in Slovak. Google translate obviously isn't perfect, but I'd guess that the original name was incorrect. Ajraddatz (talk) 20:32, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

What's the best way to raise copyright concerns about a category as a whole, when there might be individual files that are salvageable, but one think the majority are not, as in the case of Category:Pub signs in the United Kingdom? Thanks, Jarry1250 (talk) 16:55, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

There was a CFD on Category:Pub signs regarding this problem. That didn't go anywhere because its too broad, and many of the files are going to be OK.
There are 4 exceptions that would allow us to keep content in that category:
  1. Its a 3-dimensional sign and would fall under FOP as a sculpture or work of artistic craftsmanship. (Example)
  2. The sign is de minimis and is not really the subject of the photo. (Example)
  3. Its design is so simple that it is not eligible for copyright, perhaps because it is text only. (Example
  4. The design is out of copyright. This may also include may include things like coats-of-arms (Example)
Those last two classes may be quite awkward to judge in some cases: A design might be old-looking but modern, or genuinely old and in the PD. The simplicity threshold is also hard to judge...
Possibly the best way forward is to go through the category, and do batch nominations of subsets such as Commons:Deletion requests/Pub signs in England depicting trains. That should eliminate most of the "easy" ones, and give some indication of how to handle the awkward ones. Trying to get rid of all the copyvios in one go is liable to stall for procedural reasons again.--Nilfanion (talk) 17:20, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't understand the message at my discussion page here about a licensing problem with the file mentioned in the title. Does that mean that i should move the given license tag into the file description or is there also needed to use the original license of the second source file? --Master Uegly (talk) 18:02, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

There is no problem with that file now. You got that message at 9 October 2011. At that time File:Blank US map 1864.svg had no license template at all. You corrected that on 10 October 2011; there has been no issue with the file since then.--Nilfanion (talk) 18:17, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Uploading a Picture from Wikipedia.org

Can you upload a picture to the Wikimedia Commons that someone has uploaded to Wikipedia? - unsigned

  • On the technical side: yes. Routinely, we move it to the same name on Commons. There are bots for this. On the rules side: only if it falls within Commons scope. E.g. if it is in the English-language Wikipedia on a non-free use basis, it should not be moved to Commons. Can you be more specific about what you want to move? - Jmabel ! talk 02:05, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

I modified a map already present in Commons and put all the information I could, but now I get a bot message that there is no license. I don't see where the license is. Can someone help me? Thanks http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Venezuela1548.png --Periergeia (talk) 00:35, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

The original does not have a license. It was released in the public domain by its authors. The description page has the specific tag Template:PD-Demis for works from Demis bv. For your derivative work, if you consider that your personal creative additions are above a reasonable threshold of copyrightability, you can offer a free license of you own. Or you can just leave the whole thing in the public domain. In any case, if you credit the original authors, the credit should be to "Demis bv", not to the uploader. -- Asclepias (talk) 01:51, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

My photograph on my wiki page was deleted. It is my own photograph and was posted originally with my permission. Dr. Gary Auerbach 68.63.180.232 22:33, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

When you say "my wiki page", do you mean en:Gary Auerbach? And then the photo would be File:Gauerbachdc.jpg, which was apparently deleted because there was no information about who took the photo, who owns the copyright, etc. If you are the subject of the photo, I'm guessing you are probably not the photographer and hence probably not the copyright holder. If you can clarify who has the copyright, and then provide permission for a particular license (as explained at COM:OTRS), it can be restored. Sorry, I know that's a lot of hoops to jump through, but we do this so that we don't end up with a bunch of plagiarisms of copyrighted work. - Jmabel ! talk 07:18, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

File refuses to adapt to new version uploaded

I really don't know what's going on with File:Cemetery Kufr Jammal.jpg, have undertaken to improve that low-quality photo adding it light, and strangely my reupload attempts (three in number) one after the other render null in result as the end-image is still the original dark one.. Anyone simply showing me what went wrong with the "Upload a new version of this file" feature greatly appreciated, Orrlingtalk 22:51, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

Looks fine from here (the brightened image). Try clearing your browser's cache. When that doesn't work, just leave the file alone for some time. Sometimes the system takes some time to catch up and display the new version, although it is correctly saved on the server. Reuploading more versions on top of each other probably doesn't help. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:41, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

The image has text indicating it's taken from a website. When that's the case, we usually require a permission statement being e-mailed to our permissions archive from an e-mail address under the same domain name. In this case, I'm not sure it's worth the effort, though, since the image also appears to be outside of Commons' project scope. LX (talk, contribs) 08:56, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

deleting uploads

Hi I recently uploaded a file, that I'm not completely sure of it's legality in sharing, and I'd like to delete it from the commons.

how do I go about doing this?

regards, Jeremy Aranoff

Hi, I assume it's about the file "German Goldenshteyn.jpg". If so, you can edit the description page of the image, where you will remove the template {{PD-author|Arik Nitsan}}, and you will insert the template Speedydelete with an explanation of your request in your own words and provide a link to the source. What you will insert will look somewhat like this:
{{Speedydelete|I uploaded this non-free file by mistake. All rights are reserved by the source. See http://www.clarinet-klezmer.com/German-Goldenshteyn.html}}.
Reword as you want, to say it in your own words. I could have made a deletion request for copyright violation, but it's better for your record if you make a request yourself for speedy deletion, as the reason for deletion, wich will remain in your log, should be your voluntary request for correcting the mistake, instead of just "copyright violation". It's also a good exercise. :) -- Asclepias (talk) 13:17, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

See COM:OTRS for the permission letter we need. He'd decide under what licenses he is releasing (presumably small-sized) copies of his works. Copyright help regarding File:DPP 0162.JPG

Hallo/Hello.

I've uploaded a few pictures of two bands on commons the last days. I've got the pictures per email by the founder of this two bands. so I haven't a link for source for wikipedia. How I can solve this copyright problem?

Danke Thanks --Paul Bischof (talk) 07:44, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Danke

I can't see any images at the three above file description pages. Images seem to load but then disappear. They don't thumbnail nor is there a link to the full version.

I tried purge, but this didn't work. Maybe the rotate will do something, but I doubt.

I agree that a knowledge of Microsoft Word will not be relevant. Are you trying to edit an existing article, or create a new one? In either case, this is the wrong place to ask. This help page is for Wikimedia Commons, which is a store for images, sound files, etc. that can be used in Wikipedias in all languages. If you are trying to contribute a scan of, or a transcription of, a newspaper clipping to Wikimedia Commons, it will only be accepted if you have the legal right to do so. It is unlikely (because of copyright law) that you have this right, unless it was published before 1923. Maproom (talk) 00:00, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Becoming a contributor

Hello there! How are you, friend? Like many, I am a regular user of the "Wiki" sites. It's now my time to give back. I surfed this site for quite some time, and was overwhelmed by the vast amount of links. Still, I was unable to find out exactly how to go about offering my services. Specifically, I want to know how to provide my recorded voice to citations that offer correct pronunciation, when a reader clicks the blue "pronunciation" link. Second, I want to know how to make editorial changes to incorrect text (spelling, syntax, etc.). I've learned it's most expedient to simply ask, rather than wasting time trying to "experiment" with policy and procedure.

My best contact is: charlieromanello@yahoo.com.

Thank you so much. I look forward to partnering with your team! Charlie Romanello — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.252.109.146 (talk • contribs) 16:43, 7 March 2012‎ (UTC)

First create an account if you can, please. -- RE rillke questions? 20:42, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
After creating an account, you'll need recording software which can save audio in the .ogg format (I recommend Audacity) and a good-quality microphone. After that click "Upload file" on the left hand side and follow the wizard to upload your OGG file. After that, you can start by just adding a link to the file in the article like this: [[:File:blah.ogg|pronunciation]]. Later on you can learn to use the pronunciation templates to improve this. I do not know what the copyright status of this picture that I took is. It is a pictureof a Canadian coin and I know that the coin design is copyrighted by the Royal Canadian MintRoyal Canadian Mint or the Bank of Canada. I did not find any information on the copyright status of pictures of coins on the website of the Bank of Canada.

I think this picture could be a valuable contribution to the Wikipedia or the Wikimedia commons. Please help!

The Royal Canadian Mint's intellectual property policy can be found here. From what it looks like, they do release the designs for charitable organizations, but I'm not sure if we would be included in that. Your best bet might be to upload it to the project you want to use it on, under a fair use license. Ajraddatz (talk) 03:51, 10 March 2012 (UTC)
The Wikimedia Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization, but that's irrelevant, because Commons is a repository of free content, and therefore, we do not accept content licensed under terms that prohibit commercial uses. LX (talk, contribs) 09:13, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

My mistake, I will tag the file for speedy deletion. I read the rules wrong at the LAC site.--Canoe1967 (talk) 05:21, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
When there is a free image from LAC, the LAC template can be placed anywhere on the description page, but usually it is placed in the "source" field of the information template. The number to be used for parameter "2" is the mikan number from LAC and the template takes care of the link. You can see examples of the usage of the template in most files in the Category:Images from Library and Archives Canada.
(N.B.: The syntax I gave above for the template already included the correct mikan number for that particular Voyageur Canoe Pageant image. The other number you tried to insert in the template is not the mikan number but a portion of the negative reference number. You could have added the complete negative reference number optionally as parameter "1" of the LAC template, but the template does not generate a link with it.)
-- Asclepias (talk) 06:00, 11 March 2012 (UTC)
  • Even assuming this is an anonymous work, the very soonest it can enter the public domain in Canada is 2017. While there are nil additional restrictions placed on this photograph, Commons requires photos to be free for commercial reuse and derivative works, which this photo is not. -Nard (Hablemonos)(Let's talk) 19:28, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

I've taken care of the first three. The permissions are handled in the order they are received, and there's always a backlog, so don't be surprised if the fourth step takes as much as a month.
You should also find some appropriate categories for the file. I'm guessing it belongs in Category:Mechatronics or one of its subcategories. LX (talk, contribs) 17:43, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Upload problems

Resolved

Hi, I'm having problems trying to uploads two files. I've tried to subscribe two existant files (maps) fixing some pixels.

File extension ".png" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/gif).
File extension ".gif" does not match the detected MIME type of the file (image/png).

I don't understand the reason because 1/2 hour before my 2nd upload to File:Campagna diocesi.gif, the 1st subscription worked normally (this one). Thanks for help and regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 16:45, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

It's a little difficult to say exactly what's happening without access to the versions that you are trying to upload and without knowing exactly what you did. Generally speaking, that error message means that you have tried to update a file hosted on Commons in one particular format with a file stored on your computer in a different format. In the first case, you have tried to update File:Mappa diocesi Acerno.png, which is a PNG image, using a GIF image from your computer. In the second case, you've tried to update File:Campagna diocesi.gif, which is a GIF image, using a PNG image from your computer. Perhaps you accidentally changed formats when saving the changes on your computer, or perhaps you got the two files mixed up somehow? LX (talk, contribs) 17:13, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Regarding the question: No, the .png file (Acerno etc) is .png, the .gif file (Campagna etc) is a .gif file. Infact, this message appears after i click "Upload". Before of this action, it appears the normal question (the file xxx.gif still exist, do you want to subscribe? etc). I've not understood the problem with the formats, cause clicking on the file, it says that the gif is a gif and the png is a png. I try again re-uploading on my pc this commons files. Of course, thanx for attention :-) --Dэя-Бøяg 18:39, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
I've subscribed the files. I've not precisely understood what was the problem, but I've uploaded again the files on my pc. Than I've copied, piece-by-piece, my "modifications". It seems that "Upload", to recognize the new "gif" (or "png") as the same kind of "gif" (or "png") of the original, needed to be literally overwritten, as pixel-by-pixel. A doubt remains: Also my first copies (after the upload on my computer) were based upon the original files. It is possible that I've done some technical mistakes. Using the "gif" as example: maybe I've saved it as another new "gif" that wasn't recognized, uploading it on Commons, as the same kind of "gif". But I don't remember. Anyway, the problem seems to be resolved. Thanks again. --Dэя-Бøяg 19:23, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

ARC

I want to organize the description of File:Farah Pahlavi and Rosalynn Carter.tif so that it would be similar to other NARA files (example), but I cant find its Record ID. Can anybody help me to that that. And another question: How can I access to the original image on ARC? For example on this page I don't see any images, Where I must click on to see the image? Thanks. Americophile 16:03, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

You could find this picture searching for "Digital Copies" (button on the top). Not all photos are digitised and available on the site. Note that File:Farah Pahlavi and Rosalynn Carter.tif was downloaded not from nara.gov, but from the website with high-resolution TIFFs from NARA. It was a great site, but it went offline, I believe, something like 1-2 years ago. Trycatch (talk) 17:09, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Upload fails at 41% mark

Dear,

I've been trying to upload the same 1MB jpg-file for at least 15 times now, and it doesn't work. When I click the Upload File button it starts the upload but always stops at the 41% mark. It then automatically restarts and goes up to 41% again, after which I get the following error;

This webpage is not available

The connection to commons.wikimedia.org was interrupted.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Reload this webpage later.
  • Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using.
  • Add Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall's or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try
deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you :don't believe you should be using a proxy server, adjust your proxy settings: Go to the wrench menu > Options > Under the Hood > Change proxy :settings... > LAN Settings and deselect the "Use a proxy server for your LAN" checkbox.
Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): The connection was reset.

It happens every time and I don't think it's due to one of the suggested problems Google Chrome gives me. Any suggestions on what might go wrong here?

Many thanks in advance,

KRLRDN

Uploading it to MegaShare and 2Shared both failed and both stopped at 41% upload, I did however manage to upload and send it with Gmail...
I also tried to upload a copy of the file with a shorter 4 letter name and with the extension changed to .gif, but the same problems occurred. --Krlrdn (talk) 19:09, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
I've tried uploading it using IE instead of Chrome, but it failed too. I think I'll let someone else upload it for me on his/her computer on his/her network.
If you managed to upload this file to Gmail, you could try to send it to me in attachment on [redacted], and I will upload the file to Commons then. Trycatch (talk) 18:50, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! I've received the picture. I'm not sure if I can upload this picture. In the cases like this you should confirm to COM:OTRS that you are indeed a copyright holder (or provide permission from the copyright holder). Moreover, I'm not sure if the picture fits to the scope of Commons. PS. By the way, I think you could upload it yourself if you'll simply convert it from JPG to PNG. The size will shrink from 1,5 Mb to ~600 Kb without any quality loss. JPEG is not a good format for clip-art.. Trycatch (talk) 21:46, 17 March 2012 (UTC)

New graphic shows up on one page, but not on another

I'm confused. This morning, I uploaded an updated chart -- PVeff(120209).jpg -- into Wkikmedia/Commons. Then I updated the chart under secion 1.6 of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cell_efficiency; this seemed to work fine and the new graphic is there. But when I tried to do the same replacement under Cost at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cells, I get a blank box, with a small red x in the upper left-hand corner; yet, if I click on Enlarge, I see the new updated chart. If I then just go to this page when not logged in, I still get the old, non-updated chart. And if I check in the Commons and search for PVeff, I don't see PVeff(120209).jpg, the new graphic. 1: Is it there or not? 2: Will the Solar_cells page eventually be refreshed/updated? 3: Why did everything work on the first page?

Thumbnails not created

Hi, I have uploaded a set of images on Boydell's picturesque scenery of Norway a few days ago. For some reason, for image no. 52 and 68, a 150px thumbnail is not shown. Using {{Regenerate thumbnail}}, I tried to visist [3], but with no luck. No image shows up. Other sizes work well. – Danmichaelo (δ) 13:00, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

At first use ?action=purge in similar cases (see mw:Manual:Purge, w:WP:PURGE), generally it's enough to fix the problem (e.g. in this case). --Trycatch (talk) 13:09, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Help with one picture

Hello, i need help with this picture: File:Rafael Roldós Vinyolas.jpg

This man was dead in 1918, so i think this picture have to be free only for this reason. I wrote an email to El Periódico and they say: speak with the familly.

On the other hand, the owner of the pic is his familly. Is impossible to know who was the autor of the picture. May be it's enough with a letter of the familly liberating the rights?

Anyway, can somebody help me, please?--Wiay22 (talk) 09:22, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. I'm just wondering what others here think of the above page because, to me, it looks like an attempt at advertising. I emphasise I have no problem with the images (although I admit I've seen better, both technically and content-wise). I'm just stating my initial opinion having come upon the page. Or could it be that my impression was formed from the english descriptions of a couple of the images shown there ("I, Taric Alani, do such-n-such") ClaretAsh (talk) 12:04, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

deleting an uploaded image

how do I delete an image so that it is no longer accessible

Nickolasmann (talk) 15:16, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

In general, you can't just go around deleting images, or it would be chaos here. Could you be a little more specific? You can nominate any image for deletion, using the "Nominate for deletion" tool; most Commons skins have this on the left nav. - Jmabel ! talk 15:25, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Speichern fertig. -- RE rillke questions? 16:33, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

I confused FlickrreviewR

I've just uploaded several Flickr images of historical markers; all of the images are CC-by-sa and created by the same uploader, and all of the historical markers themselves are {{PD-US-no notice}}. For some reason, several of my uploads, including Armiesburg, were marked as errors by FlickrreviewR; the only exception was the Michigan Road marker. What did I do differently? Please note that I've checked all of these files for typos in the "source" line, but each went to the correct place. As well, because the bot doesn't understand the PD-US-no notice template, I added it to the Michigan Road description after it had been reviewed; my plan was to do the same with the other images. Nyttend (talk) 18:46, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

  • I don't often remember running into Flickr images that weren't available at sizes larger than Medium, so this has never before been an issue. No wonder the bot says "size not found". Does anyone know who's maintaining FlickrreviewR these days? The userpage says that it's Bryan, but he's not edited or logged any actions for a year now. Nyttend (talk) 20:53, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Pam Teeguarden.jpg

Hi, I wanted to add a photo of myself to my wikipedia page and this is one of myself. I don't know how to do this. It is a photo taken 30 years ago in New York. I would like to add it to my wikipedia page so that people could see it. Thanks,

--Puddytee (talk) 07:37, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Sadly, it's not possible. The photographer still holds copyright on this picture, and giving that the name of the photographer is unknown, it's impossible to ask him or her for permission. All these copyright complications is the main reason why the photographs in Wikipedia generally are not as awesome as this photo. Maybe it's reasonable to find some less great photograph, but with known author, who will consent to release it under a free irrevocable license. --Trycatch (talk) 09:52, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Adding watermark templates

The work that I do on wikimedia consist mainly of removing watermarks of pictures. I find the images on the bad images page. Under the category: images with watermarks. So far so good. My question is: who actually adds the watermark templates? Are there ppl who constantly view the incoming, uploaded pictures and add templates to it, if something is wrong with them. Or is it done only haphazardly. That is: ppl come across pictures with faults in it. I ask this question because I want to know if there are more pictures "out there" that have watermarks on it and are not categorized. If so, how many are there? Do they exceed the amount of pictures which do have a watermark template added to their respective page. Citypeek (talk) 10:18, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

  • It's reasonably haphazard. Most of us who are active on Commons will add that tag whenever we see an example in the course of doing other tasks. Some people monitor some portion of uploads, but not all uploads are systematically monitored. - Jmabel ! talk 15:46, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

exist: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c4/Rabenhof_10.JPG http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Rabenhof_6.JPG

and this one doesn't work: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Breitenfurter_Stra%C3%9Fe_176_Sargfabrik_1.jpg

also the upload wizard hat pretty often problems with step 5 lately. it talks about "unknown errors" but also "exists normalized" came up for no reason (and the errors are displayed at the wrong picture). it even lost the category one time.

when will uploading with the wizard be stable again?

Since the licence of the (approx 35) images concerned have been changed in Flickr I have been trying uploads to Wikimedia Commons with Toolserver :: ~bryan :: but I always get the message "An internal error has occured. Please try again later. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I get this even when I try to upload the Flickr image This one which is unrelated to the goup of 35 and, so far as I can tell, has always been marked "No known copyright restrictions". What might I be doing wrong please?

(I've been waiting in case the message was genuine but I have been getting it for more than 24 hours now.) Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 21:15, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Which 35 images? Could you please post a link to them? By the way, you don't need to use Toolserver tools (or any other tools) to upload from Flickr. You can do like I always do: download the highest resolution, upload it as you would a photo you've taken (except, of course, linking to the source and to the Flickr uploader's profile, plus being careful to mark it with the right license) and place {{Flickrreview}} on the description page. The FlickrreviewR bot will soon come along and verify that you've placed the right license. Nyttend (talk) 03:54, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, I did them all one by one the long way and the job was finished, done and dusted just before 08:00. Proper license

Hello,

Whats the Proper license for these items [4] , [5] so they can be used on wikicommons like this one[6]? Sir blue (talk) 09:29, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Note that copyright for company logos varies. They should not be assumed to be free licensed without specific reason. The most common reasons are if the logo is nothing but simple text and/or geometric shapes ({{PD-textlogo}}), or it is so old that copyright has expired -- a famous example being the "Nipper" logo used by HMV, RCA Victor etc -- where the author is known to have died more than 70 years ago ({{PD-Art}}) or for USA usage, the design was published in the USA before 1923 ({{PD-1923}}). If a logo is not in such a category it should not be copied to Commons. -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:37, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

(http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListFiles/Michaelphillipr) How do I fix this? Thanks. --Michaelphillipr (talk) 16:04, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

You did not upload the file:Dubrovnik crop.jpg, which is a cropped version of the file:Dubrovnik 042.jpg, which you uploaded and which does show in the list on your upload log Special:Log/Michaelphillipr, at 15:30, 3 October 2009, and also in your list of contributions Special:Contributions/Michaelphillipr, at 15:30, 3 October 2009. The file:Dubrovnik 042.jpg does not show in Special:ListFiles/Michaelphillipr because Special:ListFiles/(user) is a list of files the last version of which was uploaded by (user). The last version of Dubrovnik 042.jpg was uplaoded by User:DIREKTOR and you will find it in Special:ListFiles/DIREKTOR, at 22:51, 15 January 2012. A mention of the original file:Dubrovnik 042.jpg and a link to it should be added to the description page of the cropped file:Dubrovnik crop.jpg. Also, you may want to modify the "self" template in the description page of the file:Dubrovnik crop.jpg, so as not to leave the impression that the uploader DIREKTOR is the copyright holder. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:10, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

BY-SA and PD

If an image is a derivative of another file (say under CC-BY-SA 3.0 by User:ABC) but is in fact PD (e.g. PD-geometry), then is it required to license the derivative under CC-BY-SA 3.0 with attribution as User:ABC (and with PD-geometry:multi-licensing) or only PD-geometry will suffice? In other words, does PD overrule BY-SA?--Gauravjuvekar (talk) 14:33, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

An image that consists of simple geometric shapes without originality is in the public domain because it is not eligible for copyright protection. Images that are ineligible for copyright protection should not be marked {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}, because copyright license can only be applied to copyrighted works.
If you take an image that is in the public domain and modify it, you alone hold the copyright to the result if and only if your modifications themselves are eligible for copyright protection. In that case, you can apply whatever license you like. If, however, your changes do not meet the threshold of originality, the resulting image is also in the public domain.
If you take an image that is legitimately licensed under {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} and modify it, you share the copyright for the resulting image with the original copyright holder(s) if and only if your modifications are eligible for copyright protection. In this case, you must preserve the original license (because of the Share-Alike requirement). If your changes do not meet the threshold of originality, you do not become a copyright holder, and you must still preserve the original license. LX (talk, contribs) 16:42, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

No response to question on OTRS noticeboard

Hi, I posted 4 days ago on the OTRS Noticeboard with a question: Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard#File:Alex Mitchell - journalist.JPG but so far I haven't received any response. What should I do? -AndrewMitchell36 (talk) 11:27, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Hate to say it but probably: wait longer. Not the most active of pages, only a handful of people working on it. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
You can try to go to the discussion page of the OTRS member who edited the description page and ask him if he can tell you if the mail was received. Or/and you can post a reminder on the noticeboard and hope it will elicit a reply. Was the wording of the copyright holder's permission explicit that he offered the photo under the CC-by-sa 3.0 license? If not, it is possible that a request for clarification was sent to the copyright holder's address, without your being notifiedof it, although in that case normally the template would have been changed to Template:OTRS received. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:03, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
Regardless of what the issue is, the edit summary of "Fixing categorization" was wholly inappropriate, since it wasn't a categorisation issue at all. Nyttend (talk) 03:50, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
It's not so much the edit summary that's a problem. What I find seriously disturbing is the rudeness displayed by the OTRS members by their completely ignoring all the polite attempts at communication from this user. The user waited patiently two months, which is more than the current backlog of 21 days, without getting any news. Then, she he enquires at the OTRS noticeboard, where her his question is totally ignored. No reply, nothing. The only reaction is one OTRS member removing the "OTRS pending" template from the file description page and replacing it with a "no permission" template, without any explanation in reply to the user's question. Then, possibly following our advice above, the user posts a polite question on that OTRS member's discussion page, who then merely deletes the question from his page, without any reply or any explanation. Complete silence. Can't those people at least say something? If only to tell the user if the OTRS mail was received or not? Or at the very least to tell why they don't want to speak to her him? Or anything? -- Asclepias (talk) 23:28, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for your comments/suggestions; as Asclepias wrote above I left a message on Fastily's talk page but got no response before it was archived. (I should point out, though, that I am a he rather than a she :-) I changed back the incorrect template again and I have re-posted my question on the OTRS noticeboard and hopefully this time I might get a response. -AndrewMitchell36 (talk) 16:46, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I guess I got confused there between Alex and Andrew. :) -- Asclepias (talk) 16:54, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
No worries :) Techman224 on the OTRS noticeboard has kindly looked into it for me and told me he couldn't find the email, so I have resent the permission. -AndrewMitchell36 (talk) 21:50, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Corrupted jpgs

Hi, I recently took many pictures of some pro and anti-Syrian government demonstrations that took place in Copenhagen on Sunday, which I think would be helpful on Commons, but my SD card was somehow corrupted, I managed to retrieve some of the files with a recovery programme, but now they cannot open. Any of the wizards here know what to do? Here are some of the images I can't open: [7] [8] FunkMonk (talk) 02:59, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Both files have nothing but zeros inside -- obviously it's not possible to repair them, there is no more data to extract. Generally, there are plenty of JPEG recovery programs -- open source (e.g. JPEGsnoop), freeware, and paid. --Trycatch (talk) 05:39, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

Food and Agriculture Organization

A number of files uploaded to commons are sourced to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) web site. An example is this image: File:Trachurus murphyi.png, which I am currently attempting to upload. My question is: Does the FAO copyright notice in fact satisfy Wikimedia's copyright requirement? (And if it does, how should this be indicated when files are uploaded from the FAO?) --Epipelagic (talk) 07:18, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

  • Of course, this is not enough, that page doesn't allow commercial use, and even non-commercial use is allowed only "upon request". how to attribute a photo when used as part of a commercial illustration

I am an illustrator and matte painter. Occasionally, I use photos in my illustration as a base on which to paint over. I was excited to discover this database recently since nearly every photo can be used with attribution given. In my work no photo is ever used as it is or in it's entirety and what parts are used would not be recognizable to uninvolved viewers. Sometimes, however, the photos are not completely painted over. When I'm done I send the final painting off to the publisher. I would like to use photos found on this site, but how can I fulfill that attribution obligation?

Help!

Please see COM:REUSE. It depends on the license of the file you want to use.
Public domain files can be used without attribution.
Reusing a Creative Commons Attribution file () you must attribute the author and you must attach a copy of the Uniform Resource Identifier, for example http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/.
Reusing a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike file () - I think thats a majority of our content - you must attribute the author, attach a copy of the URI and you must publish your derivative work under the same license. Please read the full text license agreements. For Creative Commons licensed files please read especially section 4 of the license legal code. --Martin H. (talk) 06:08, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

You are maybe logged in https. (not http://commons.wikimedia.org). Nevertheless, now an additional step (upload twice) is required due to a change in MediaWiki-software using derivativeFX (it will tell you the session data is lost). -- RE rillke questions? 09:28, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Problems with image

Hello, I have recently uploaded a file that I made on Inkscape, File:Geography of France title.svg, but it is not displaying correctly on Commons. The font for the word "France" is wrong, and there is a large black square that shouldn't be there. It looks fine on Inkscape, and, importantly, it looks fine when you click on the image and go here. Liam987 (talk) 09:55, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

It works when you look at the SVG because you have those fonts on your system. Since Zapfino is not free, it's not installed on the server, and neither is STKaiti. meta:SVG fonts has the complete list of fonts on the server; Help:SVG is also a good page to look at when you're have problems with SVGs on Commons.--Prosfilaes (talk) 10:24, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Problem restoring the full-resolution version of a downscaled image

Can anyone explain what's going on with File:We Came as Romans Vegas.jpg#filehistory? The original file is 1,280×960 pixels (548 KB). That was then overwritten twice for some reason by SKINER with a 800×600 (74 KB) version. I tried to restore the original version by clicking "revert" next to it, but this just resulted in yet another copy of SKINER's version. I did the same thing with File:Motionlessinwhitelv2011.jpg, which was overwritten by a scaled-down version by the same user, and that worked as expected. Database glitch? LX (talk, contribs) 10:03, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Turns out doing the exact same thing you did had the same results. In any case, look at the file history; the file that's supposed to be from 2 July 2011 and is labeled as 1280x960 is labeled 20120319191457!We_Came_as_Romans_Vegas.jpg (hence from 19 March 2012, if I'm reading that right) and is only 800x600. There's got to be a glitch somewhere.--Prosfilaes (talk) 10:32, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
20120319191347!We_Came_as_Romans_Vegas.jpg This one is original. It seems that many people have the same problem right now, see Village Pump or the section below. Not sure if the bug was filed. Trycatch (talk)
It is also quite dangerous that mediaWiki uses timestamps to identify image revisions. It's not only dangerous; it is also stupid for performance reasons (file renaming/moving). The name should be simply an ID - then we wouldn't have all these trouble. And, and, and .... Files ≠ Wikipedia article (There can be more than one file depicting the same). -- RE rillke questions? 11:59, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
^^This. I agree absolutely. Imagine -- something like git instead of the current mess, without all these problems like broken attribution paths, lack of stable external links, attribution of the authors for DWs, and so on. BTW, how MediaWiki gets the timestamps for older revisions (don't want to dig into the code)? All timestamps I see -- in the image history, in the logs -- are different from the older revision timestamp. Seems to be some random timestamp. Trycatch (talk) 12:16, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
As for the log, I think there is a "logger" that logs the events asynchronously. They are almost always later than the upload timestamps (sometimes they are missing completely bugzilla:35354, bugzilla:34713). That's the next mess, but this is tracked in bugzilla:34427. -- RE rillke questions? 14:31, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
I managed to get the original back by reverting to the wrong revision. So much for version control. Git-like hashes would be better indeed. LX (talk, contribs) 13:27, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Rajenver (talk) 12:17, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

I suppose it's not possible to delete this picture for an admin on Commons, see the bug report -- bugzilla:34934. Really, the easiest way to solve the problem is to reupload the picture under another name with few bytes of junk added. The bug report in question is already almost 1 month old, so it may take weeks/months to wait for the clean fix of the problem. Trycatch (talk) 18:36, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm the owner of the photo. How can I put that in the License?

--Gizmou (talk) 17:58, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Could you clarify what you mean by "owner of the photo"? Just owning a physical photo does not give you any rights to reproduce it. Are you the photographer? If not, and if you don't have a release of rights from the photographer, you don't have the necessary rights to place this image on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 22:57, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Question

My own photo abouth my own project ( CD ) is deleting, why? How can I prove that this is my project? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ORIOLI (talk • contribs) 21:07, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

I'm guessing that this is about File:CD Welcome Third Millennium !.jpg, which appears to be your only deleted upload. Because it is work previously published elsewhere, we need you to follow the procedures at COM:OTRS. Send an email as explained there (mentioning the filename and indicating your selection of the cc-by-sa-3.0 license), and the file should be restored.
There would basically be two ways to handle something like this:
  1. Just send an OTRS email as described for the single image.
  2. If you are routinely uploading work like this, send OTRS an email explaining that you create CD covers and will from time to time be releasing them under this license. They will give you a ticket number that you can apply to your uploads in the future. You should also probably create your user page and explain there that you are a person who routinely creates CD covers, so people won't think this is being uploaded by some third party ripping off the creator of these covers. - Jmabel ! talk 23:12, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Editing the page of Rodoin Shchedrin

Good day! I have some questions with your licences on pictures on Wikimedia Commons. I have edited the page of Rodion Shchedrin on Wikipedia and all the photos which I placed on it have been removed. I have a contact with the composer and all these photos were taken from his personal files. How can I resolve this problem? I have a confirmation letter with his signature - maybe I can send it to you?... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heled1580 (talk • contribs) 07:53, 25 March 2012‎ (UTC)

The only one who can grant a valid copyright license is the copyright holder. That typically means the photographer. In the case works for hire (theatre posters like File:Anna buklet.jpg are often works made for hire – and I'm guessing you did not actually create that poster yourself, right?), it would be the organisation commissioning the work. Having a copy of a photo created by someone else in your personal files or appearing in the photo does not make one the copyright holder. LX (talk, contribs) 09:35, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

License Selection

This is my first upload, and I wanted to verify what type of License I should use. I have recropped the existing image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Prem_Rawat_2007.jpg

This will be crop2. The first cropping is being used on his Wiki page. It says "The permission for use of this work has been archived in the Wikimedia OTRS system." Do I need permission/written agreement with the parties concerned? Or can I freely upload it?

I did not see how to communicate for -- In doubt, don't hesitate to ask at Commons talk:Licensing before uploading your files.

Thank you. Verities (talk) 14:18, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

If the OTRS ticket is valid, then that means that the CC license on the page is valid and you can crop and upload as it is allowed by that license, which license is the agreement of the parties. However, in the case of this particular image, it can be seen that the mention of a OTRS ticket was added on the page by a user who is indefinitely blocked on the en.wikipedia and there is no easily accessible evidence to determine if he even was a member of the OTRS team at that time. So, before doing anything, you certainly want to have the validity of that OTRS ticket verified by identifiable OTRS members. You can ask on the page Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. (If the ticket is valid, then it would also be useful if a current OTRS member would validate the ticket directly on the description page of the file, to lift the ambiguity.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:40, 29 March 2012 (UTC)

Christopher Whall

In my wikipedia listing of works by Christopher Whall

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Christopher_Whall

I include reference to St Bede's Chapel in Greenwich. Connecticut. I wrote "1915 The chapel was originally known as Rosemary Hall, designed by Theodore T Blake and described in the New York Times in 1909 as the "only example of pure Middle English Gothic architecture in America". The 16 foot stained window at the north end of the chapel was designed by Christopher and Veronica Whall and installed in 1915. The window honours the Venerable Bede, the patron Saint of Education."

I have been in touch with Connecticut and have received this e-mail

Judy Donald, Choate Rosemary Hall's archivist asked me to look into the information that the Archives has on Whall's stained glass window that is in St. Bede's Chapel in Greenwich, Connecticut. The window in St. Bede’s Chapel from the old Rosemary Hall in Greenwich, Connecticut was repaired in April 1994 by Martin Rambusch Decorating Company in New York City. The project was funded by the Japanese Educational Institute, the school which owned St. Bede’s Chapel at that time. Attached, please find two images, one in color from June 1993 and one in black and white circa 1942 of Whall’s stained glass window in St. Bede’s Chapel. Also attached is a description of the window from H.W. Cummings, the president of Cummings Studios Stained Glass in North Adams, Massachusetts from June 1993. Cummings Studios prepared details about each window in preparation for the renovations; however, the final renovations were done by Martin Rambusch Decorating Company.

I hope this information helps. If you need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely, Kate Slavinski Library Assistant

I would very much like to add the 1942 black and white image to my Whall listing,

Are you really sure that you took the photos you uploaded? The EXIF metadata for many of the photos mention various foundations ("© 2011 Van Batenborgh Stichting Groenlo", "© 2011 Van Batenborgh Stichting te Groenlo" (OK, same one) and "© 2011 Copyright Hofje Sint Maartenshuizen, Maastricht". Besides, one image is credited to "Picasa" and another image is credited to "Rutger". There are also at least two different cameras involved (Panasonic DMC-FZ45 and Research In Motion BlackBerry 9700).
You can't upload other people's images that you have downloaded from the Internet. If you have permission from the foundations, please follow the instructions at COM:OTRS/nl. --Stefan4 (talk) 22:58, 30 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi Stefan4, thanks for your response. Yes I am sure what I did with my own Panasonic camera and own Blackberry. Great you noticed that! As I am the boardmember, I agree with myself:-). Do I have to change the EXIF metadata too?Vbsgroll (talk) 10:06, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
If you change the EXIF metadata, I guess that would be seen as licence laundering, so I would suggest that you don't do that. If you are the photographer and also a board member, I would assume that you are allowed to use the images. However, given the EXIF, and given that some images appear elsewhere on the Internet (cf. File:20e eeuw Abrollen des Feuerrades vom Hügel.png vs. [9]), I think that you have to prove that you own the images by sending an e-mail to OTRS confirming this. --Stefan4 (talk) 12:18, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
File:821 796 denarius koning Coenwulf koninkrijk Mercia.jpg has "Internet" listed as the source. You need to provide a more exact source and ask the photographer to send permission to OTRS. See COM:ART#Photograph of an old coin found on the Internet for the relevant policy on coins. --Stefan4 (talk) 12:24, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

--Lubiesque (talk) 15:44, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

You need to prove that it is out of copyright in both the United States and Madagascar. It is out of copyright in the United States because it was published before 1923, but it is only out of copyright in Madagascar if the photographer died before 1942. The photographer might be indicated on the back side of the postcard. If the photographer is anonymous, the photo is in the public domain in Madagascar. --Stefan4 (talk) 15:55, 31 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I suspect any copyright issue would have to do with France as there is "Gouadou Photo Toulon-sur-Mer" on the front of another copy of the exact same postcard. God knows who or what that is, and if it's a who, when he or she died. Very often on those 90 or 100-year old postcards the copyright holders are stuff like Édition RD, Lévy et Neurdien Réunis, S.J. Attipa & Co., LL (?). Most of the time it's not a plain individual. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lubiesque (talk • contribs) 2012-03-31T17:53:30 (UTC)
