After reading "This image is available from Library and Archives Canada under the reproduction reference number C-781", how can I find the relevant page on the LAC website ? I can't find any "search by reference number" tool on the LAC website. Teofilo (talk) 18:17, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Enter C-000781 in the search box. It returns [1], which links to [2] and [3] -- Asclepias (talk) 20:51, 31 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. It was a great idea of yours to add those extra 000. I feel relieved in the sense that the LAC possesses the whole lithograph, not only the small detail that was uploaded. I am going to upload the whole lithograph from the Library of Congress website, although it is not a high resolution picture, and the LOC's bibliographical information is slightly different. I was wondering if the LAC had a better high resolution picture online. But the LAC's bibliographical information is precious anyway. Teofilo (talk) 09:47, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

OTRS email template

I would like to use the standard declaration of consent to get the permission to upload a logo and a photo of a research institute. Since neither the logo nor the photo is available online in exactly this version (only available on a local computer of the institute) - what should I plug in for the field "INSERT LINK OR LOCATION"? Thanks for your help --Lukasmergele (talk) 07:22, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

You can do what it says in the paragraph before the letter: If the link to the file is not available online, you may upload the file on Commons with the {{OTRS pending}} template and have the author link to it in the declaration of consent. --rimshottalk 07:39, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Peter-Puppenfamilie

Du kannst dir in Deinem Benutzernamesraum z.B. User:Egonist/Puppenbilder gern eine <gallery> anlegen. Commonist macht das irgendwie auch automatisiert.

My image looks like low quality picture although it's not

Good day, I'd like to ask why the picture Glass of Coca-Cola.jpg looks in preview like if it's some jpg file with a very low compression (especially the Coca-Cola red logo), although the compression has been set over 90% and just the full version of the picture looks like it's supposed to be. I improved image's colors in PhotoFiltre but then the preview looked even worse. Has it been caused by the thumbnails generation problem or did I do something wrong? Thanks anyone for help! --Wespecz (talk) 22:31, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for help! So I'll upload it as png. To me the logo looks like with stripes, faint and like with a very low compression if on a thumbnail like this. --Wespecz (talk) 23:06, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
In all likelihood this is not due to compression artifacts but due to the image simply not looking as nice at low resolution. The PNG version will in all likelihood look worse, because JPEG thumbnails have a sharpening filter applied. Dcoetzee (talk) 04:45, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

I think the PNG looks much better but let's keep the JPEG for Exif-record. -- RE rillke questions? 08:47, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

For further info on the inappropriate jpeg compression look at Template_talk:Convert_to_PNG. The root cause is simply too aggressive jpeg compression (see the this VP discussion - especially the end for how to solve it.... ). I would upload jpeg suitable files in jpeg (of course with low compression applied - but do not re-encode therefore...) and hope for a change in our thumbnailing. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:13, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Licensing

My image here has been tagged with no license. How do I specify a license to use for my file? Thanks in advance. Lukep913 (talk) 23:18, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

You already published this image on WIkipedia in english : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Crater_Lake_Panaorma.jpg
with Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License.
And in higher resolution that the one on Commons.--Lilyu (talk) 00:46, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks a ton, got it to work. -- Luke Talk 01:07, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for sharing your great photos. But, could you please upload the same version than at Wikipedia :

At the bottom of the description page of the photo, there's a link saying Upload a new version of this file This allow you to reupload on the same file name/page

Also, i assume you meant "panorama", and not "Panaorma". You can ask it to be renamed by adding to the description page the following code : {{Rename|Crater Lake panorama.jpg}}

It is better that both of this actions are done by the author and uploader of the image, please --Lilyu (talk) 06:32, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Lilyu, I think you did mean {{rename|new name.jpg|reason for new name}} instead of {{Bad name}}? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 02:17, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Thx, correction made --Lilyu (talk) 10:31, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

how to add my web site in wikipedia

I have a website that's a year old and i want to get it into wiki. Is there a way to do it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shumaila (talk • contribs) 06:04, 2. August 2011 (UTC)

  1. Here you are on commons. Commons is a media-hoster for free and educational useful contents.
  2. Wikipedia is not a promoter.
  3. If your website has educational content, provide a link and we can talk about what's the best solution.

Convenience link: File:Typewriter adler3.jpg - Jmabel ! talk 00:42, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

As the license reproduced here shows, yes, but somewhere you'll need to credit 'Wikimedia Commons User:Dake' and reproduce the terms of the license (probably on your copyrights page). If you can get hold of the photographer/uploader, it's possible you might license it under different terms. - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks!!
Also, the credit is easy but as far as reproducing the terms of the license, does that mean literally putting in the lengthy terms of use on my copyright page?
Thanks for your patience! —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.14.138.139 (talk) 12:48, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
You could set up somewhere other than your copyrights page to put this information, but one or another way, it should be there. Does anyone know: can he/she simply put "See http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/deed.en for licensing terms"? - Jmabel ! talk 15:16, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Got it!! Thank you all so much!!!

Per section 4a of the license (or section 4b if you modify the image), you can include either a copy of the whole license or a mention the URI of the webpage where the reader can find the license. I think most people probably find it easier to include the URI. :) -- Asclepias (talk) 17:04, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
You can use the photo under the terms of the specific license offered by the author. That's the principle of free licenses. You do not need to email the author, unless you want to negociate different licensing terms. (However, I understand that, by precaution because you want to use the photo on a book cover, you may want to verify with the author if the wording of the photo credit is satisfactory for both of you). For details, you should read the text of the license itself. (If you are not familiar with CC licenses, parts of the FAQ on the CC website could also be useful.) You can place the credit wherever it is normally placed in that type of books. A credit line for this work might look somewhat like this:
Cover photo by Dake, Typewriter adler3.jpg, licensed under CC-by-sa 2.5, http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/legalcode. From http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Typewriter_adler3.jpg.
But that is only an example of how I might write it. You can word it differently or possibly make it shorter or longer. You should word it according to your own understanding of the license (or according to your possible consultation with the author if you contact him). -- Asclepias (talk) 17:04, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

What is the maximum tif size for thumbnail to display ?

Hello,

On the larger tif files, direct links to thumbnails produce the following message : "error generating thumbnails, the resolution of the source file is too large". But doesn't the server generate thumbnails for JPG files bigger than that ? Anyway, what is the maximum allowed size for tif files to display as thumbnails ? Teofilo (talk) 05:05, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

I know that there is a limit for PNGs (12.5 million pixels). JPEG - scaling is much easier for the server. But there is probably a solution (libvips). Go to bugzilla and request (or vote for) this. -- RE rillke questions? 10:05, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps the limit is the same for tifs as for PNGs : with 11.8 million pixels File:Balaklava sick 2.tif is still OK. Teofilo (talk) 12:23, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

If it is a really big bunch, you may file a request at Commons:Batch uploading. Teofilo (talk) 17:09, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
It is not really a big bunch, just pictures I randomly come across that I could add to baseball articles. Just would make it easier. Detredwings1139 (talk) 17:27, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
I guess its not possible then.. Detredwings1139 (talk) 17:36, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
I assume you know that, but just in case ... pictures you randomly come across might not have a suitable license. --rimshottalk 18:56, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Yea, I know. They were on the Library of Congress website. I'm almost positive I remembered seeing that they were okay from there. Is that true? Detredwings1139 (talk) 19:01, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Not automatically. The normal copyright restrictions apply, the copyright status can usually be found near the image. A lot of pictures on the LOC site are {{PD-US}} or {{PD-USGov}} or public domain for some other reason, but not nearly all. --rimshottalk 19:50, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Press release

There is a press release by Botswana Govt in PDF that needs to be uploaded somewhere so that it can be used as a reference on Wikipedia. Down to the point, what license should it be uploaded under, here at Commons?--Avala (talk) 21:11, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

A press release by the government will be under Botswana's government copyright (unless its explicitly released). That is almost certainly non free, and so cannot be hosted on Commons. It might be free if its old enough, if you can provide more information about the release you should get a clear yes/no.
I'm a bit confused as to the need too, why would you have to upload a PDF to be a reference? Offline references are perfectly OK for Wikipedia, and if its from another website that other website will work. If you need to upload it (to share with other editors?), you may be able to upload it to another hosting service.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:25, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
I agree. Botswana government works are copyrighted according to the law : http://www.wipo.int/wipolex/en/text.jsp?file_id=224944#LinkTarget_504 Teofilo (talk) 09:54, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Well yes but the press releases are given away to be published, aren't they? It's not old enough, it is a recognition of South Sudan but no online media has picked up the story so the only reference we have is the PDF we received from the Botswana Government that contains a scanned document which is a press release by their Government announcing the recognition of South Sudan.--Avala (talk) 12:28, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Much as with publicity photos, while a press release is 'given away to be published', that doesn't actually change its copyright status. And, yes, this is a pain. - Jmabel ! talk 14:37, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Cite the document indicating its print source. There is no requirement that Wikipedia references be available online. If you need to address someone's doubts, you can offer to send them a copy. Same as would be the case for citing a hard-to-obtain book. - Jmabel ! talk 14:39, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Public Domain photos and public domain tags

I noticed that some public domain photos have the message, "You must also include a United States public domain tag to indicate why this work is in the public domain in the United States."

Is this saying then that every time I use such photos, I must include a tag? I would think a public domain photo, by the nature of the case, can be used any way one wants to use it.
—Preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.183.195.138 (talk) 03:24, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

The laws regarding what is and what is not in the public domain vary from country to country. Since the Wikimedia Commons servers are located in the U.S., an image must meet the U.S. criteria for it to be in the public domain. Warfieldian (talk) 04:39, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
No, you don't need to use any Commons tag when you use the images outside of the Wikimedia websites. But I understand how the current wording of the message can confuse users. The purpose of that type of template is to inform everybody, and primarily potential reusers, about the copyright status of the images. However, the sentence you quoted above was added recently and has a different purpose. While the rest of the template is still intended as information for reusers and everybody, the new sentence is intended as an internal reminder for the contributors who upload files to the Commons website and relates only to the upload requirements on this website. Unfortunately, this mix of two types of messages, about different matters and intended for different groups, can cause confusion. When you use an image outside Wikimedia, you must care only about the requirements of the law of the country (or countries) where you republish the image. The copyright status tags were supposed to somewhat help with that. Ignore the confusing sentence that says you must also include blah blah. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:56, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Baseball Digest images only pre-1964?

Hi, I've uploaded a bunch of images with the {{PD-US-not renewed, Baseball Digest pre-1964}}, but I have a question about the tag: why does it have to be before 1964 to be PD? No, works first published prior to 1964 had to be renewed. In 1992, the requirement to be renewed was removed, so works that come up for renewal in 1992 or later were automatically renewed.--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:46, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Ok, i edited a little the description page of your photos.
May i suggest you to ask for renamming files with no meaning, like File:67559984 455db61c8d o.jpg, for something more appropriate ?
You can do it by copy-pasting this code to the description page of an image : {{Rename|NewNameHere|meaningless name}}
=>for example, for File:67559984 455db61c8d o.jpg : {{Rename|White lama.jpg|meaningless name}}
--Lilyu (talk) 21:05, 7 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Regarding the gallery tool : i can do nothing, i'm not a programmer (this tool is hosted on toolserver and is not really part of the website). It will be probably fixed soon.
  • For the search tool : no, there's no that i am aware of. Yes, search by tag name and licensing is nice on Flickr.
  • A robot automatically review the flickr page to check if the license is correct. So, yes, if the link is not the one he's expecting, there might be a problem for him to check.
If your photo on flickr has the same license than on Commons, there might be no problem. If one of your photos has been deleted, maybe an administrator could take a second look at your deletion log and restore some mistakes.
  • A problem might raise one day, if you provide a free license on commons and the photo is tagged "all right reserved" on Flickr. In such a case, a formal solution could be to send a permission mail at OTRS at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org where you state something like "Yes, the Commons User and the flickr User are the same person". An OTRS ticket will than be provided, a kind of recorded proof, and by providing the ID number of the ticket on the description page of the files you upload, no further question regarding permission will be an issue again. --Lilyu (talk) 21:25, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, I guess I think this should be a little more User Friendly to be of help to anyone! I try to follow the long drawn out process, but it just leads to more long drawn out processes and I don't have a lot of time to even get frustrated with that. I first thought about the filenames, but since there was no requirement stated, I just used the meaningless ones cause it's quicker. When I get a chance, I'll go back and redo it all and try again to get my photos from Flicker to my account here. But there's also the fact that the Gallery doesn't work, so other services don't have that problem and people can automatically go to your Gallery and see your Pictures. I guess that's really not the main focus here, but it doesn't hurt to have the things functioning that work for other sites doing the same Media! Thanks again for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kathycalm (talk • contribs) [4] cc by sa 3.0

But there are other solution i can help you with : we can create a category for your own work, like Category:Kathy Calm or Category:Files by Kathy Calm , for example : Category:Files by User:Coyau
and you can create a subpage in your user domain, where you can list all files with an appropriate caption, like User:G.dallorto/Palermo
See : Commons:User-specific galleries, templates and categories policy
--Lilyu (talk) 01:19, 8 August 2011 (UTC)
Most of the contributions that were deleted were mostly deleted for duplicate reasons. So I assume someone transferred from flickr your image under a more appropriate name at that time (the deletion are dating from 2007). See there for finding those files... Esby (talk) 13:22, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

licensing

i wanted to create an article about an EU project. ive contacted the project and they allowed me to use their logo for wikipedia but i dont think they want it to be sold or used in other contexts. what should i do, what license could i use? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starterkit (talk • contribs) 08:59, 8. In this case you must upload the logo locally on Wikipedia as "fair use material", following the local rules there. It is not suitable for Commons, unsless it is a very simple logo which cannot be copyrighted. SV1XV (talk) 09:19, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

Ebay and PictureHistory: Two questions

Are you allow to use images from a site where they are selling old photographs out of copyright such as Ebay? Also can you use Picture History and ask someone to remove the watermarks?--KAVEBEAR (talk) 16:33, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

  1. see {{PD-Art}} and when to use it.
  2. place {{Watermark}} on the image-description page. Be aware: Do not upload if the watermark is protected by copyright. In this case you have to remove it before. -- RE rillke questions? 09:21, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

Advice on compatibility of Irish-state license

As part of an off-line Wikimedia project, a number of us are looking at the Irish Government press office website. The site currently uses a standard Irish-state license that is incompatible with the Commons/Wikipedia. However, the license is still relatively "free".

As part of approaching the editors of the website, political parties, government ministers, etc. we'd like to identify the parts of the license that are incompatible. Can anyone point us to someone who would look at the license and identify the parts that are incompable, say why and possibly offer the minimum changes necessary to make it compatible (e.g. deletion/changes of specific clauses, etc.).

The license is here http://psi.gov.ie/files/2010/03/PSI-Licence.pdf. Regards, --Rannpháirtí anaithnid (talk) 20:27, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

How do I modify my username and password?

When I first registered an account, i used a pseudonym, not realising that it would appear each time I upload an image to Wikimedia Commons. I therefore re-registered using my own name. When i now attempt to log-in, I am told on every occasion that my password is invalid, even though I have attempted to use the password I recall giving and have tried every other former password, but to no avail. When I ask for a new password, I have received temporary passwords which are also not accepted and are declared invalid. How, may I ask, can I change my password on my existing user account, so that I can return to some form of sanity? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Martin york (talk • contribs) 10:36, 19. July 2011 (UTC)

I am not sure that I understand your concern. Is it that you want your real name appearing at each uploaded image? Easy solution: just use your current account and abandon the old pseudonym account.
You can only change your password if you know your old one. To know your old one you can use the reset function as you did. Not sure why it failed. But doesn't the "easy solution" work for you? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:32, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Commons:Images containing text - I would say it is {{PD-text}} and {{PD-ineligible}}. It is only data. And the logo is probably {{PD-textlogo}} (Commons:TOO). If the signature is a problem it could be due to personality rights. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:56, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

genus names of flowers

I want to upload a number of pictures of flowers but I have no idea what their scientific names are. How to proceed? Citypeek (talk) 05:39, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Do you know what their regular names are? Give them a good name when uploading (ie "daisy" rather than "white and yellow flower") For a lot of flowers, a little search (with their common name) on en: wiki will give you their scientific name which you can use to add categories. (ie if I had an image of a water lily, I'd put it in Category:Unidentified Nymphaeaceae. I wouldn't know which of the sub-species it would be, but there are experts that can look at this image closer. There are "unidentified" categories for most flowers.) Hope that helps. -- Deadstar (msg) 09:41, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

Copyright status of images of wax statues of fictional characters

Adding Photo With Permission of the Owner

I uploaded a historic phot of writer M F K Fisher's home in Albion, Michigan. I discovered the photo was in the possession of the Albon City Historian Frank Passic. I emailed Passic and he replied giving me permission to upload the picture for use on Wikipedia. It is unknown who took the pictur or when; however, it was likely taken circa 1905. In using the wizard upload, there did not seem to be an option for this permissive use of the picture. I therefore marked the box "free artistic license." Should I have done something else? Thanks, Henryheater (talk) 15:51, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

If he is indeed the copyright holder, you could send his e-mail which releases the photo under a free license should as Creative Commons to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as explained at COM:OTRS but that shouldn't be necessary if the photo was taken in 1905, it is in the Public Domain and can be tagged with a Public Domain tag such as PD-Us Warfieldian (talk) 17:09, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

How do I remove the "Media needing categories as of 15 August 2011" category?

--Хрюша ?? 20:43, 16 August 2011 (UTC)
Super, herzlichen Dank!
-- Хрюша ?? 05:06, 17 August 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for uploading the photo to Wikimedia Commons. I placed a tag on the photo indicating that you'll need to document that have permission to use this image. Please follow the instructions on the tag to find out how to do this. You'll need to ask Dave Miller to email permissions-commons@wikimedia.org showing that he gives permission to release the image under a free license like Creative Commons. (edit conflict) I don't know why the Wikipedia system does not let you edit the page of the Wikipedia article. I would gladly insert the image there for you if necessary, but first it would be useful that Wikimedia Commons obtains the confirmation from the copyright holder that he offers this photo under the CC-by-sa 3.0 unported license. Executor may mean many things but it cannot be automatically assumed that as such a person can alienate part of the copyrights of the author. You should determine with certainty who is the owner of the copyrights of Clay Geerdes and ask that copyright owner to send a written confirmation of that fact and of the declaration telling explicitely that he releases this photo under the specified license. Please see the page Commons:OTRS for the details of the procedure. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:07, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Deleted files?

I noticed that one of the image galleries I created now has two missing images [10]. I am not sure what the reason, perhaps the files were deleted. If changes like that occur, is it possible for Commons to set things up so that such changes show as an edit? That way users who have the gallery, or category, watched can at least delete the empty boxes left on the page. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 15:45, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

  • These files were renamed without suppression of redirects. Old names had been used for a lot of time, so I've recreated redirects for these files. I think it's not possible to track deletions in a gallery or category, but you can track other edits in a gallery or category using "Related changes" tool in the toolbox. Removing lines from a photo

I've just uploaded a photo of a 1707 wall painting in a Swiss village chapel: File:Peinture à l'interieur de la Chapelle de la Trinité des Pelleys à Cerniat.jpg. The chapel is always locked, but you can see inside through a tiny hole left in the door that's just big enough to take a picture through. Unfortunately, there is some sort of grating covering it, which shows up on the photo. I believe it's possible to fix that using software though, so if someone here knows how to do that, or could bring it to the attention of someone who does, that would be great! --Terfili (talk) 19:44, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Problem downloading Video files

Hello,

When I try to download a file to my MAC, all I seem to get is the audio, but not the video. Any suggestions? And once I get it how do I convert an OGG file to a Quicktime file?

problems with templates (related to HTML tables ?)

Who to take things up with when I disagree with a bot category change

Resolved

Category:W.T. Preston (snagboat) was recently changed to Category:W.T. Preston (tugboat, 1929). The actual change was made by a bot, Category-bot (talk · contribs), but I presume it was requested by a human. I have no problem with the addition of a date, but to the best of my knowledge, the Preston was never a tug; WT Preston gives no indication to the contrary. (A snagboat is used to clear logjams on a river.) I don't see an easy way to find out who requested this change, so I can take it up with them. Hi, I'm currently Working in a compagny named Adept Technology Inc. In order to create the compagny's french wikipedia's page, i would like to insert our logo. I see that only common licenced type are allowed but i also see that a brand like Coca-Cola has its logo on its page.

Could you explain to me how to proceed to insert our logo into our wiki page in a manner that fits the rules ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shriv3rs (talk • contribs) 12:27, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Commons only accepts content that is free for anyone to use for any purpose. This means that the content either has to be in the public domain or have been published under a free license. The copyright of the Coca-Cola logo has expired, which means that it is in the public domain, as explained on the file description page.
To upload your company's logotype if it is protected by copyright, someone authorised to speak on behalf of your company on copyright matters needs to send a licensing statement to OTRS to place the logotype under a free licence allowing anyone to use the logotype for any purpose (for copyright purposes; {{Trademark}} restrictions would still offer some protection). Examples of free licenses include Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike and Creative Commons Attribution.
The French Wikipedia also allows local uploads of non-free logotypes under certain rules. Be sure to read fr:Wikipédia:Notoriété des entreprises, sociétés et produits and fr:Wikipédia:Autobiographie before starting your article. LX (talk, contribs) 14:02, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Searching

I need som help. I have found this old picture on the website http://www.senar.ru and I would like to upload the picture on Commons and use it in an article on the English Wikipedia. I don't know if it would be legal or illegal to upload the picture on Commons, because the website http://www.senar.ru/photos/piano says "© senar.ru, 2006–2011" but many of the pictures on the website are in the public domain and can be found in the United States Library of Congress and here on Commons. I am almost sure that the picture that I would like to upload can be found on several other websites. Is there a tool or a web search engine where I can search for the picture and maybe find it on other websites? I think that the picture probably is in the public domain. --Fanoftheworld (talk) 18:04, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Tineye.com is a great website for looking to see if an image is available elsewhere on the internet. I ran the image and it did not come up with any other sources. Since the image in question is labeled in handwriting with the year 1936, that would likely put the publication date at least 75 years ago. According to this template, if the author is unknown, then the image is in public domain since it was published before 1943. Warfieldian (talk) 18:27, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

I found this photo on an internet blog. I emailed the blogger, who had taken the photo, and asked her permission to upload here for download onto a wikipedia article. She emailed back her permission. The wizard uploader did not appear to give options to annotate this permission - other than "miscellaneous" - so I annotated the permission in the file description. Was this correct? If not, what should I have done? Henryheater (talk) 23:33, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for obtaining permission for the image. Wikimedia Commons has an e-mail ticket system set up to document permission for images uploaded. You can find more information at COM:OTRS. You should forward the e-mail (including the headers) from the e-mail you received with permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. You should place a {{OTRS pending}} tag in the permissions section of the image to indicate that you have e-mailed the permission and this tag will be replaced once permission is verified. Warfieldian (talk) 00:17, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Hi, There are four problems. The permission you asked from the author is not worded in terms clearly compatible with the Commons policy. Consequently, the permision granted by the author is probably not compatible with the Commons policy. The author's permission is transmitted to Commmons indirectly through hearsay. And you tagged the work as being released under a free license to which the author never agreed, thus violating her copyrignt. Please see the information about the procedure at Commons:OTRS. There are also suggestions and examples for how to word requests for release. -- Asclepias (talk) 00:29, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Is there a script (like Twinkle on en.wiki) that we could use to tag files (e.g. {{Out of scope}} etc) out here? The toolbox gadget that I enabled only has the deletion tags. cheers. SpacemanSpiff (talk) 07:38, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Twinkle should work here, too but I don't use it. You may have a look at MediaWiki:AjaxQuickDelete.js/doc. An example to add to your commons/skin.js:
var AjaxDeleteExtraButtons = [{
label: 'label in the toolbar when visiting files',
tag: '{{template to add to the image|1=%PARAMETER%}}',
   talk_tag: '{\{subst:template to place on the user\'s talk page|1=%FILE%}}',
img_summary: 'Summary on the image %PARAMETER%',
talk_summary: 'Summary on the user\'s talk page',
   prompt_text: 'Question text'
}, {
   label: 'Tag as dupe',
   tag: '{\{duplicate|1=%PARAMETER%}}',
img_summary: 'Tagging as duplicate of [[%PARAMETER%]]',
prompt_text: 'Which is file is this a duplicate of?'
}];

Produce a list of filenames in a category?

In order to make sure that I've photographed every place on a long list, I'm trying to get a list of all the filenames in Category:Bloomington West Side Historic District. CatScan2 ? --  Docu  at 18:23, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
"And nothing more" might be asking too much from the system, so I know this is not really what you are looking for, but the only time I had to create a list like that, I added the NOGALLERY option to the category, previewed the page (no save), did only one copy/paste of that whole list where I wanted it, and edited out the letters of the alphabet sorting. It's still quite boring and not really quick, but unless a better method is available at least it's much quicker than to open each file and copy/paste each name separately. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:29, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Hmm, that last option is actually the best yet: CatScan2 worked for me (unlike the others), but I still had to remove extraneous data from every line, but the NOGALLERY gives me absolutely nothing extraneous except the letters of the alphabet sorting. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 01:01, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Well, I can think of two ways. The first is to email the OTRS team with permission from the copyright holder. The second is to find out if the State Department has a photo of your chairman taken by an official photographer - that would be the work of a US government employee, and thus public domain. -mattbuck (Talk) 09:17, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

Regarding credits: the author of the images is not the one who scanned them. The author is the photographer or painter. These images might be public domain anyway, depending on the copyright laws of Tonga. --rimshottalk 06:33, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

OK to use?

I found a collection of very good quality images of Cyrillic manuscripts on Flickr [12] that I would like to upload to Commons. They have a "Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-SA 2.0)" license. But there is also a notice under each of the images saying "posted with the permission of the National Library of Serbia: www.nb.rs/", and that leaves me unsure that the actual owners of the images gave permission for the CC BY-SA 2.0 license.

Is it OK to upload these, or better to leave them alone? Malcolm Schosha (talk) 14:11, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

The original source seems to be http://eng.digital.nb.rs/. If it weren't for the fact that several of the reproductions have an element of depth, {{PD-Art}} might have applied. I would check with the National Library directly, both to ensure the long-term safekeeping of the files and to check if CC-by-sa license isn't actually more restrictive than what the Library intended. The note at the bottom of http://eng.digital.nb.rs/ seems to indicate a positive attitude towards sharing their collections with the public, so getting a clear licensing statement or even PD release is hopefully not too difficult. We have a source template for files from the NLS: {{NLS Digital Library}}. LX (talk, contribs) 16:01, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. A closer look at the National Library of Serbia site suggests that the images can not be uploaded to Commons: 2. These materials may not be used for any commercial purpose without prior written permission from the National Library of Serbia (hereinafter "Publisher"). http://eng.digital.nb.rs/kontakt/
Unfortunate, because both the images, and image quality, is so good. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 18:22, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Well that's a bummer. I didn't notice that they had usage conditions hidden away in the contact section. Maybe Wikimedia Serbia could work some diplomatic wonders to convince the NLS to change their position? LX (talk, contribs) 19:45, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
The stipulation "no commercial use" is frequent with museums. For instance, the Walters Art Museum has some really nice images of Islamic [13], Orthodox Christian [14], and Western European [15] manuscripts. I would have liked to upload them, but they all have NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0) licenses. La vita e cosi. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 20:15, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

I've uploaded a file that is my own work. why is it being threatened to be deleted since it doesn't have a source? the source is me! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rrakanishu (talk • contribs) 18:33, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

This is about File:Orbitalaltitudes.jpg. Where do the images of the Earth and the Moon come from? If you're not an astronaut or satellite operator, they're unlikely to be your own work. LX (talk, contribs) 19:50, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

As you can see in the description page's history, the "no source" tag was removed more than two weeks ago. -- Asclepias (talk) 02:48, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
"ale and the altitude data was collected from many Wikipedia articles and various other sites." sounds like a joke. Please add real sources. -- RE rillke questions? 18:48, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Please rename the file

Since the problem with te correct naming of the "green birds" on the photo

has been happily resolved with the help of the community at my requests I placed at the Village pump and at the Science Reference Desk, I think it's a good time for kindly asking to rename the photo in such a way:

Happily, this photo has not been used by now in any other projects, except for the abovenamed help desks where I placed links to it. Thanks in advance, Cherurbino (talk) 16:50, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

You may use {{rename|Doves and Parrots in Barcelona.jpg|Uploaders request}} on File:Doves in Barcelona.jpg. A filemover will then see it in a maintaince-category. -- RE rillke questions? 18:45, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Renaming of protected templates

Where could I ask for (and discuss) renaming of protected template? More specifically Template:PD-ineligible to Template:PD-trivial, because second one is more simple and easier memorized, especially for non-native English editors. The misprints in current name are enough frequent (inelegible, inlegible, un... (variuos), etc.). Alex Spade (talk) 11:27, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

I assume you mean {{PD-ineligible}}. You could use the template's talk page. You may wish to point to the discussion from the village pump for example, to get more input. I don't think changing an established, appropriate name is likely to reduce mistakes, tough. {{PD-trivial}} and {{PD-Trivial}} already redirect to {{PD-ineligible}} (along with several others), so using any of those already work. LX (talk, contribs) 18:21, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
Thx. I've again misprinted. Alex Spade (talk) 09:23, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

Licensing requirement for Scanned Image

Hi,

I have a friend whose father is a public figure and already has an entry in Wikipedia. He has given me a printed picture of his father, and asked me to replace the existing picture on Wikipedia page. The picture depicts what his father was expert in and I feel that it is very relevant to the page.

According to my friend the picture was taken by some of his father's family friend and later printed and framed. He does not have any idea who took the picture but he is sure it was not by any professional photographer.

I now want to scan the picture and put it on the page. Does this violate any copyright? Can this scanned image be uploaded to Wikipedia with GNU license? Please advise.

Thanks

Yes, this violates copyright. You need the approval of the photographer, professional or not, before you can upload a modern photograph.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:06, 26 August 2011 (UTC)

You can't edit the Filelist. But if you click on an image, you can edit the image description page. The description column only shows the summary used when uploading. With upload wizard you have no chance to set it. -- RE rillke questions? 10:09, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Photo showing up in Wikipedia is not the photo shown in Wikimedia under that filename

I linked to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Henri_Matisse.jpg and the photo showing in Wikipedia (older Matisse, dark photo, facing right sitting down) isn't the same image as what's displaying in Wikimedia, which is the image I want to use... (younger Matisse standing at easel). I checked and rechecked the file name, and tried re-uploading the right photo, and the problem is still happening.

Weird problem. Does anyone know what might be happening? OttawaAC (talk) 19:18, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes. en-wiki has a photo of its own under that name, so it doesn't go through to look for one on Commons. One of the two should probably be renamed. - Jmabel ! talk 19:33, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

The intended use for the picture you've uploaded. --201.230.99.160 17:43, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Should I? This was not actually intended by me! And I see no need for it. Or is it? --Mjchael (talk) 18:20, 26 August 2011 (UTC)
Commons has the scope of providing freely licenced educational images - if an image is not educational, it can be deleted as being out of project scope. We do have a fairly vague definition of educational, namely "if you can think of a wikipedia article this could illustrate, that's good enough", so there is wiggle room, but you can see why we're unsure what use your image is. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:49, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Is it possible to 'bring back' deleted files?

Hello, a number of files uploaded by a person I'm trying to help have been deleted because they lacked proper License and Authorship (see list here). Is there a way of bringing them back and adding the needed information or do I have to start uploading all over again? Thanks, --Gnom (talk) 09:53, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, it is possible for admins to undelete images. It's probably best to ask the admin who deleted them. —Angr 10:10, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Flickr uploads

Hello, I had scheduled a few uploads by Flickr Upload Bot, but the uploads were never completed (all the other steps were completed), and I went walkabout for a few days and in the interim the pages were deleted as the files were never uploaded. They have since been restored by the deleting admin on my request, but I'm unable to upload the relevant flickr images to those files, as I keep getting the error "This file contains HTML or script code that may be erroneously interpreted by a web browser." I've tried changing the name of the source files but that wasn't of any help either. The deleting admin (Foroa) mentioned that other users have had similar problems with the bot before and would also like to know why this happens. Since the bot operator hasn't been active since March, I haven't posted a note on their talk page, but can anyone else help. The following is the list of pages, all Flickr image links are in the page and the licenses have been verified by the bot.

cheers. SpacemanSpiff (talk) 16:17, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Again: It is not an issue of the bot. But you can ask the bot-author whether he might implement an automatic removal of HTML-code. If you can not upload them, also the bot can't. You have to remove the HTML from the metadata. I will do this but in future, use a tool like Exiftool or similar yourself. See Commons:Exif#Tools. -- RE rillke questions? 16:30, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
Thank you, I've never encountered a HTML-metadata issue before, so I wasn't aware that this could be a problem. SpacemanSpiff (talk) 17:05, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
You can upload File:Rahul Bajaj - India Superpower - World Economic Forum - India Economic Summit 2010.jpg yourself if you think the banner in the background is de-minis or ineligible. I will not do this. -- RE rillke questions? 17:10, 30 August 2011 (UTC)
I didn't think it'd run afoul of de-minis, but I've asked for the page to be deleted. We have other images of the person, so this one isn't essential. cheers. SpacemanSpiff (talk) 18:40, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

Was habe ich falsch gemacht?

--rimshottalk 20:57, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
