La línia de crèdit conté:

• L'atribució. L'autor(s) de l'obra, com a condició obligatòria, a incloure en el treball. Les llicències Creative Commons CC-BY i les llicències GFDL d'ús específic requereixen que tots els usuaris de l'obra atribueixin l'autor(s).
• La llicència(-es), sota la que està l'obra.

Tot i que aquí s'utilitza el terme "línia de crèdit", no cal especificar l'atribució necessària com a línia de crèdit, ni tampoc s'especifica el format de l'atribució.

Algunes obres poden tenir instruccions específiques de l'autor sobre com voldrien que s'atribuís la seva obra. Aquestes sol·licituds s'han d'atendre sempre que es trobin dins del que requereix la llicència i s'han d'atendre, si és raonable, en cas contrari. Si l'autor no ha donat instruccions explícites, encara s'ha d'atribuir a l'autor i es poden trobar les formes mínimes i suggerides d'atribució a continuació.

Creative Commons

Llicències CC-BY i CC-BY-SA

Segons les llicències CC BY i CC BY-SA de Creative Commons, els usuaris reutilitzadors han d'atribuir l'obra proporcionant una línia de crèdit. La secció 4b (secció 4c de CC BY-SA 3.0) de la llicència completa proporciona els detalls. A continuació s'inclouen els fragments més rellevants:

Si distribuïu [] l'obra o qualsevol adaptació o col·lecció, tret que s'hagi sol·licitat [de no fer-ho], s'han de mantenir intactes tots els avisos de drets d'autor de l'obra i proporcionar-los, de manera raonable per al mitjà o mitjans que utilitzeu:

Dit d'una altra manera, tret que l'autor o el llicenciador demanin que no se'ls acrediti, els usuaris que reutilitzin la distribució de fitxers que es troben a Wikimedia Commons han de proporcionar una línia de crèdit amb la llicència i l'autor. L'autor també pot sol·licitar que en la línia de crèdit s'inclogui altres "parts d'atribució" (com Wikimedia Commons), l'URI (com pàgines web) o el títol. Els usuaris reutilitzadors poden triar el format de la línia de crèdit "raonable per al mitjà o mitjans" sempre que hi hagi tots els components necessaris. Note that attribution in accordance with best practices may be demanded by law in many European countries (cf "moral rights"), regardless of any general waivers such as CC-SA.

Llicència d'art lliure

The Free Art Licence considers it vital to announce the image is free and under a copyleft licence, which is linked to (or the URL spelled out in print). This is in addition to information on the author, the title of the work, the date of the work, any other authors contributing to the work and the location of the original work(s). The following format is required:

[Name of the author, title, date of the work. When applicable, names of authors of the common work and, if possible, where to find the originals].

Public Domain media do not require a credit line or any kind of attribution; however, reusers are encouraged to attribute the author (if known) and inform users that the work was released into the public domain.
