Operator: Atsirlin (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information)

Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought: sorting of images uploaded during the WLE/WLM contests in Russia (adding/removing/modifying categories, changing monument ID's, etc.)

Automatic or manually assisted: automatic

Edit type (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): one-time runs

Maximum edit rate (e.g. edits per minute): mostly depends on my internet connection that is usually on the slow side; if necessary, the bot can be limited to, e.g., 10 edits per minute, although I see no particular reason for doing that

Bot flag requested: (Y/N): Y

Programming language(s): perl

Plenty of earlier bot edits can be found here and here (many of the edits under my regular user name were also done by the script). I have been doing the whole image categorization for WLE-2015 and WLM-2014 in Russia. Alexander (talk) 13:03, 29 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

Is everyone enjoying the last summer weekend? As the starting date of WLM is approaching, the bot will start crawling through existing images that were uploaded in previous years. There are several things that need to be fixed before WLM-2015 starts. Consider this as test runs. --Alexander (talk) 14:58, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In which way are edits like Special:Diff/170235231 helpful? Please elaborate (perhaps on the bot's user page) which kind of fixes you are intending to make. Please also explain [1]. --Krd 08:58, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The reason for edits like Special:Diff/170235231 is the mess with lists of Russian cultural heritage. Many of the monuments were listed twice and were thus uploaded under two different monument IDs in previous years. We are slowly working on finding such duplicates. The bot corrects monument ID's of individual files and categories, so that only the numbers used in the current lists appear on Commons. The duplicates are collected on a separate page that the bot uses as a source for this particular task.
Regarding [2], it is my personal opinion. I don't want to be active here at all, but there are certain tasks that the organization of WLM/WLE entails, and there are certain things (relevant to other Wikimedia projects) that other people will not do here. On the other hand, if I see that the local community is going to take these tasks over, I will be very happy to step out, because I have much nicer things to do than working on the project that I don't like.
I added some info to User:Atsirbot. I can add more if necessary. --Alexander (talk) 09:23, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'd expect that if the replacement string is already present in the file page, the wrong template is removed only, i.e. no duplicate template is inserted. Can your code be changed accordingly?
I'm also not sure if your claim to be inactive here but only implement changes that are discussed in another project will be successful on the long run, but I'm look forward to different opinions. --Krd 09:36, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have modified the code. Now the tricky thing is to find another image where two templates with different IDs are present.
Regarding your second remark, it is not my choice to do things this way. This year before WLE multiple issues related to the organization of images and categories were raised on Commons:Форум (see this topic and below), and very little response was obtained. Moreover, most of the people who took part in that conversation are equally active or even more active in Russian Wikivoyage, where the work is actually done and coordinated. At the moment, I do not expect any fruitful input from the Russian-speaking community on Commons, I do not expect non-Russian-speaking people to be interested in this subject at all (or have an ability to understand all details, because our conversations are, naturally, in Russian), and I do not have time to cross-post everything here and there, or translate things into multiple languages when this is not going to have any useful impact for our work.
On the other hand, I am watching Commons every day, and I am open to any useful remarks, comments, and discussions. I have chosen to be inactive here in terms of editing, neither I upload my own photos to Commons any longer, but it does not mean that I am completely absent from this project. --Alexander (talk) 10:02, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Approved. --Krd 09:50, 13 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
