[edit]

I'm sorry, it was of course not my intention. I got a warning, and moved up my text without deleting any text, do not know what went wrong. Best regards, --Ankara (talk) 19:30, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Zoomed version

[edit]

Hello Wnt, can you provide a zoomed in version of the inflection point where growth turns around in this image? Thanks! --SJ+ 18:38, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[This was answered on the Wikipedia talk page]

"Unpublished"

[edit]

[1]: No, actually, I didn't specifically mean "unpublished". I think the matter is even clearer for published work. We have no need at all to track down subject-consent issues for images published before 1950. Given the assumption that the subject was at least 18 years old, if they are still alive they are now at least 78. Most will have been older (or the picture will have been earlier). - Jmabel ! talk 00:25, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

We already have a section that says that published work that makes it to a free license is assumed to have consent period. Isn't that how you read it? Wnt (talk) 04:18, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Take your filthy vicious rants elsewhere, because we don't want them on Commons

[edit]

You may consider it allegedly "funny", but I don't (and if that makes me "uncool", then I really couldn't give a rat's ass) -- and I see absolutely no reason why I should have to put up with having my name be next to and associated with your odoriferous pile of obscenity-inanities... AnonMoos (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, an editor made up a cute, elaborate little figure for an article, and you were griefing him about a few pixels of blank space around the edge. The usual gift-horse analogy seemed somewhat insufficient. Wnt (talk) 20:35, 25 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever -- they're semi-nifty graphics (though quite ephemeral, each of interest for only a few days), but they're laid out in a program which seems to be intended for producing slides or report pages, not inline Wikipedia article graphics, and the uploader has done nothing to meaningfully compensate for this, but instead lashes out wildly in all directions and blames everybody but himself when the images don't display well inline in Wikipedia articles. And meanwhile, I see no reason why my user identity should be associated with your string of contumelious epithets in perpetuity by means of Google. AnonMoos (talk) 11:40, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
AnonMoos? AYFKM? And the only epithet I used was arse, not in reference to you, but to the gift-horse.
Seriously, remember that Wikimedia Commons is not just for Wikipedia articles, and certainly not just for inline previews in Wikipedia articles. Wnt (talk) 03:00, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have gone by AnonMoos for almost 10 years (almost 15 if you count a previous slightly different spelling before I changed ISP's) so it is not a "throwaway". If you search AnonMoos on Google you get over 20,000 hits, the vast majority of which are as a result of my activities. Amusing as it may seem to you, there is a consistent long-term identity associated with the name... AnonMoos (talk) 12:15, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you learn something new every day. ;) I probably have seen the name in other formats and assumed it was just a common variation. Wnt (talk) 01:17, 28 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Copy-edit to Copy-edit to COM:SEX

[edit]

I did a pretty major copy-edit to the proposal. Can you give the current version a once over to check that it's still all intact. No major policy changes or info removed, but a lot of shuffling, and I want to make sure nothing got lost. Thanks, Ocaasi (talk) 05:33, 2 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(I should note that after some months, this proposal appears pretty dead, and there doesn't seem to be interest in reviving its parts - it may be time to redirect it to the subsequent Help:Sexual content and close the case). Wnt (talk) 00:56, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Wnt!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
 • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
 • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
 • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
 • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
 • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Note to self: the recommended upload tag is "cc-by-sa-3.0". And you can't supersede an edit by clicking on the Upload button again after adding a tag, like you can in Wikipedia. Wnt (talk) 18:15, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

'dot' template

[edit]

... worked for me just now. I was surprised! :) - Alison 22:28, 26 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Did you actually submit the edit? I don't see it, and preview works fine for any blacklisted site.
That thing dot ... ach... the way caching works remains obscure to me. The theory is:
 1. There's no blacklist check when a template is changed (otherwise thousands of pages would have to be purged and scanned), so a template can be changed after the fact to make a badlink. So for example, if I try to write
http://www.wikipediareview
 • com/(first I have to submit to see if reason prevailed, but I doubt it; censorship seems to stick to tools - indeed, I get their message still, so for now I'll put it in with User:Wnt/Sandbox)
OK - changing the Sandbox to "." it works, but if I recall correctly, this next edit won't save. And indeed it didn't, until I changed it back. Wnt (talk) 16:58, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So the next thing is, suppose I have a template which evaluates the last time the page was edited, and compares that to the current time. Thus:
http://www.wikipediareview.com/ . Then the page displays a non-standard dot at the moment that it is edited, passing the filter, but changes to a dot immediately afterward. Problem solved. (This might be alleged to violate policy, but using the spam filter for censorship is the true violation of policy, and this merely is investigating a way to set it straight) Wnt (talk) 17:02, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that I reload the page, and it still doesn't change. But I thought I could fix that by having the currenttime separate in User:Wnt/Templates/dot - then purge that template using [2], to reset the time. It seemed to work in previewing of the original template. This was a less-than-optimal solution, as for a busy page this would have to be purged over and over again to keep the link working, but I suppose it could be posted to 4chan "See my latest rickroll" or something. ;) Or put in an iframe somewhere, if there's somewhere convenient where those are still allowed. Wnt (talk) 17:07, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Problem is, I purge it, and unlike in the template itself when I looked... nothing happens. I'll guess what goes on is that the purged template is marked to be reevaluated in the template page it's in, but that that template isn't marked for reevaluation (and if it were, it would be like a fresh edit, resetting it to not a dot). So now I'll try a new idea, which is to subst the thing:
http://www.wikipediareview.com/ Wnt (talk) 17:09, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But that doesn't work either. So it's not that any template ever gets marked for reevaluation, I guess - the page is simply cached the first time it's edited, and it stays the way it was when you edited it. But wait, no... otherwise the first example I did wouldn't work. I edited the Sandbox template and the page changed. But I purge the template dot and the time it returns doesn't change. So what gives? Hmmm... Wnt (talk) 17:14, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Aha... I tried purging a few more times - no proper periods. But then I added "testing" to the noinclude part of the template, and the links become fully clickable. So the point is, purging the template is not the same as editing it, no matter what the docs say. Editing it marks my page displaying it to be reevaluated - purging it only changes the result when I view the template directly. I think this weirdness has confused me more than a few times when trying to understand other templates for more conventional uses! Now to try an authentic edit-save null edit to see what happens. (Note - by submitting this edit, the periods will go back up to their funny position so as to avoid being rejected by the filter) Wnt (talk) 17:19, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright - that's odd. I saved that edit and the periods were still down, with clickable links, immediately after the edit. That's just not even in the range of possible options. Like I said - achh!! Wnt (talk) 17:21, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Whereas putting in that edit (no purges of any kind in the meanwhile) put them back up again... sigh... Wnt (talk) 17:22, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, Edit and Save (without changing anything) brought the periods down to their right position just now (at least, this time). Whereas purge never does. Wnt (talk) 17:24, 28 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:First Earth Battalion Field Manual.djvu. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. Hi Wnt - do you have a copy of the original FEB manual? Links to the pdf &c all seem to be dead, and the 'possibility thinking' image you uploaded (used on m:Usenetpedia :) isn't part of the online text. --SJ+ 20:13, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Sj: The "old" version I found was a defective pdf with some rows set the wrong length, which I tried to salvage best as I was able by djvu conversion at File:First Earth Battalion Field Manual.djvu According to the file description at several places where it was available for download, this was the one actually being passed around by U.S. Army officers and used in the course of official duties. There is another that was distributed later on, which I thought may have copyrighted features, and some other extracts online, and I didn't pursue them very far because I was looking for PD material, but you might find them interesting. But it was some time ago and I'm not sure which site they were on. Wnt (talk) 12:05, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.) Pay attention to copyright
File:Catawissa flooding.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

You uploaded an edited version of a public domain badge for WikiProject mass surveillance in 2014: don't know if you're still active but if you wanted to release it to the public domain you probably wanted CC0 licensing ({\{CC0}} without the slash).
