AWB

May I kindly ask you to edit a bit slower, maybe not more than 2-3 edits per minute, or otherwise ask for a bot account for your edits? Thank you so much, regards, Patrícia msg 17:16, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry - en:WP:AWB states vaguely "a few edits per minute", and I was trying to keep it at about 5-6, but I'll slow down a bit. – Tivedshambo (talk) 17:20, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
I know we have pretty vague policies on this, so it's more of "so it won't flood RC" which was happening at some point. No harm done though, thanks :) Patrícia msg 17:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

file names

Hi Tivedshambo,
beyond the current controversy with Erik, I would recommend to you to choose filenames that name the depicted item first, at least before your name. Otherwise there is at least some potential for becoming cryptic or misleading (for example with portrait photos). But that's just a recommendation. --Túrelio (talk) 08:03, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

This has been my standard for some time now [1]. I've considered renaming the earlier photos for consistency, but this seems like a large waste of resources for little gain. Thanks for your help, hopefully this will see the end of the matter. – Tivedshambo (talk) 08:11, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Voice of Clam!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Eritrean_Railway_-_Tivedshambo_2008-11-04-edit1.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Permission to use your photo

I am creating and printing a leaflet entitled 'Map of Heritage Railways in the North East and Yorkshire' to distribute to help raise awareness of Rare Disease Day on 28th Feb and would like to use your photo 'British Rail class 03 number 03079 shunting on DVLR to illustrate the Derwent Valley Light Railway. It will be a small thumbnail size photo without title (no space) - will this be ok? The map will be free but we ask for donations to the Myasthenia Gravis Association, and we hope to send copies to all the heritage railways and rail museums and information centres across the region. Linda McDonald MGA Regional Organiser (North & Yorkshire)

Hi - thanks for the request. I'm happy for you to use it in the manner you suggest. As it's going to be a small image without title, and it's for charity, I'll waive the requirement for attribution. I'll look out for it when I'm in the area!  An optimist on the run! 10:34, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Photo rename

Hi Optimistic! Recently I asked yo to rename the File:Fallas -Mamita Yunai ed. popular cubana.jpg because I thougt that the dot after 'ed' was causing the problem that impeded to see the photo on the infobox, but the problem persisted; after that, I uploaded another image File:Aguirre - Juan de la Rosa.jpg, and I had the same problem. Now I saw that same problem in David Rosenmann-Taub (& in the Spanish & French versions of that article as well) with a photo that is not mines, File:David Rosenmann-Taub.png, but that have in common with the other two the dash (-), so I now think that the problem is the dash. That is why I am asking you now, if possible, to rename the file David Rosenmann-Taub.png to David RosenmannTaub.png and see if it works and the infobox shows the photo after been renamed. If that is the case, I would ask you to rename File:Fallas -Mamita Yunai ed popular cubana.jpg to File:Fallas libro Mamita Yunai ed popular cubana.jpg and File:Aguirre - Juan de la Rosa.jpg to File:Aguirre libro Juan de la Rosa.jpg (all my explanation may sound a little strange, but I am sure that is you go to file David Rosenmann-Taub you will understand the problem). Of course, if the dash is causing the problem, it would be nice if in the appropiate place you can put a recomendation for not to use it in the files names to avoid that problem in the future (and if it is not the dash, then I don't no what to do to solve it). Thank you and excuse me for taking your time.--Roferbia (talk) 12:23, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm getting the same problem. I very much doubt that the dash in the file name is causing the problem, so another rename won't solve anything. I believe there are some residual server issues following the recent server migration. Leave it with me, and I'll see if I can do anything tonight.  An optimist on the run! 12:57, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
OK, thanks; but the funny thing is that if you use the file in the text (no in the infobox) with the normal sintaxis ([[File:Aguirre - Juan de la Rosa.jpg|thumb|the text you want), then it works fine.--Roferbia (talk) 14:35, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
You've probably got your default thumbnail size to be >403px (the width of the image). If it's set less than that, it won't reduce in size. I've tried uploading another version over the top of it, without success. This seems to be a bug with the Wiki software at present, and not with your images - see w:WP:VPT#Images not rendering. All I can suggest is be patient, and see if it resolves itself in a week or so. If not, I suggest raising the problem at the Village Pump, as it's beyond my technical expertise I'm afraid. But I'm certain it's not the file name that's causing the problem - most of my images have dashes in, and I've never had any problems.  An optimist on the run! 17:22, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Seems to be working now, at least on my browser.  An optimist on the run! 22:01, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

Railway BS Map help please

Hi Optimist,

I am working on the 1500km Central Austral Railway BS Routemap at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Australia_Railway and wonder if you could assist please or direct me to an appropriate location. I am sure the BS is simple once you know how
The line runs from Port Augusta in the south to Alice Springs in the North and was all narrow gauge. The railway became standard gauge from Port Augusta to Marree but took a different route abandoning the old narrow gauge. The Standard Gauge is now partially abandoned as well (don't farm in the desert is a top tip!)
Can you help or point me in the correct direction please to split the line into two distinct lines at Marree (SG on left, NG on right) and then swap them over at Farina and then bring them back together at or before Port Augusta. I can then add the large number of stations in between and the odd diversion.

Thank you so much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skillsy (talk • contribs) 03:17, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Hi Skillsy - I don't know why you've picked me to ask, or why you're asking on Commons, not Wikipedia, but the best place to ask for help is Wikipedia talk:Route diagram template on Wikipedia. Although I've done some RDTs in the past, I'm not an expert on the latest syntax. Optimist on the run (talk) 07:31, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

Opposites

Here you reverted my edit and state that «not all "now" pictures are opposite to "then" - some (e.g. Tal-y-llyn church) are almost unchanged.» Well, the concepts "now" and "then" are pretty much textbook cases of opposite-ness (even if "now" is synchronic, vs an endless range of diachronic "thens"). If some image pairs categorized here do not look opposite, then they are either miscategorized or they are actually showing perenity (they look the same now and then — but "now" and "then" are still opposite concepts). In neither case that means that my edit was wrong. But I wont revert you: improving categorization against your will is not worth the work I put on categories you aren’t looking at for the six months I’d be blocked for “edit warring”. Enjoy! -- Tuválkin 14:24, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

I reverted on the en:WP:BRD principle; personally I wouldn't consider that "now" is opposite to "then", and therefore that "comparisons" is a better description, but if you want to raise it as a discussion I won't oppose. Optimist on the run (talk) 18:32, 13 May 2017 (UTC)

@Belrien12: All images on Commons must be free. This means you either own the copyright yourself (owning a copy of the image isn't the same thing as owning the copyright), or you have to have permission from the copyright holder. In this case, this is likely to be the film distributor. You can ask for more help at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Optimist on the run (talk) 19:13, 10 November 2017 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

 • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
 • To perform file name swaps.
 • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Top Banana Screenshot

This was my first time uploading a game screenshot. I want to use the template "Non-free video game screenshot" but I can't get it to work. I have the best intentions and I believe that this image is necessary for this article, but the bureaucracy of uploading it is something I don't quite understand. If you have further insight as to how to get this template to work I can fill in the necessary information. Waxworker (talk) 11:30, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

@Waxworker: Non-free files are not permitted on Commons, and will be deleted - see Commons:Fair use. If the image is for use on English Wikipedia, you can upload the file there, provided it meets the criteria given in en:wp:non-free content. The template en:Template:Non-free video game screenshot can be used, but is local to English Wikipedia, and cannot be used on Commons, for the reason given above. Let me know if you need any more help. O Still Small Voice of Clam 11:59, 5 December 2019 (UTC)
@Voice of Clam: Thank you for explaining. Your insight was very helpful and I have marked the image on commons for speedy deletion. Waxworker (talk) 12:58, 5 December 2019 (UTC)

Template problems

Something about your template: User:Voice of Clam/Information/Otherfields, is making your photos appear in the wrong categories. For example, File:A_view_of_Paradise_1_-_2017-10-04.jpg appears in Category:Taken with Samsung Galaxy S20 5G when it should not. EoRdE6(Come Talk to Me!) 06:24, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

@EoRdE6: Odd. Nothing to do with my template, as the category wasn't showing on the image pages. I've done a null edit on the images which seems to have removed them from the category page. Possibly a temporary glitch in the Wiki software? Anyway I'll keep an eye on it and if it happens again I'll raise it on phabricator. O Still Small Voice of Clam 07:40, 4 December 2020 (UTC)

Hi Voice of Clam, I am a bored bot (this is kind of a computer program) that is watching the recent changes and tapping buttons like I did now.

Curious about the reason? Possibly not but I will tell you anyway:

 1. You edited User:Voice of Clam/vector.css. Glad to see you coding in css! Have you ever considered becoming a MediaWiki hacker?
 2. Though, that change appears to introduce 2 new prettyCss issues — the page's status is now having warnings. Note that invalid or ambiguous code often has unwanted side effects like breaking other tools for you. If you cannot find out how to fix it, I suggest blanking the page for now.
 3. To help you understanding where the issues are, I have aggregated a report here and now. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask users experienced in css writing for help. But do not ask the bot's operators (chronically overwrought) unless you suspect an error of mine. If you prefer not getting spammed by me, you can opt-out reports by adding to your user page or cmb-opt-out anywhere on your your global user page on Meta. Good luck at Wikimedia Commons and happy hacking!

File:Malton railway station - 1986-12-20.jpg

Hiya, Any chance you could have a look at the original print of this picture to identify the actual locomotive in the shot? Railwayfan2005 (talk) 21:10, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

@Railwayfan2005: sorry, I haven't been able to find the original print at the moment. I'll have it filed away somewhere. I'll let you know if it turns up and I can get any information from it, but it's unlikely to be any clearer than the scan. O Still Small Voice of Clam 08:42, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
No worries. Railwayfan2005 (talk) 19:00, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Not my photo - I just renamed it. O Still Small Voice of Clam 18:37, 2 November 2021 (UTC)

hasty deletion

Hello. It appears you recently flagged the file File:The leggiest animal on the planet, Eumillipes persephone, from Australia—female individual with 1,306 legs.jpg as an alleged copyright violation because it appears in multiple news articles. However, no matter how widely the photograph is reproduced, the copyright holders published it under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 in the original journal article. I have requested undeletion from the deleting administrator. Please do not be too hasty with speedy deletions. Thank you. --Animalparty (talk) 21:00, 16 December 2021 (UTC)

@Animalparty: It was not a "hasty" tagging, as you put it. I believed that the image had been copied from the internet rather than being own work, based on the lack of EXIF data, the fact that the BBC (usually very reliable when it comes to copyright) had stated the image came from Reuters, and the lack of source on the information page. I don't claim to be 100% perfect, but please assume some good faith in my motives. O Still Small Voice of Clam 08:01, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

File:Tonga Volcano Eruption 2022-01-15 0410Z to 0550Z.gif

Hey Voice of Clam can you please move this file to Category:2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunami since the category it's currently in is at risk of being deleted thank you. Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 12:39, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

@Cyclonetracker7586: I don't have admin rights on Commons, so you'll need to ask at COM:AN. I moved the file before it was on the en-wiki main page. Voice of Clam 12:50, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

Oh Okay thank you Cyclonetracker7586 (talk) 12:53, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

Michela Rocco di Torrepadula, Miss Italia 1987.jpg

Hi Voice of Clam, I don't understand why we need a permission for that file if is is in the public domain. Does it mean that all the files of this category are copyviols? Please, explain me what I did wrong, since, as far as I understood, all the images published in Italy more than 20 years ago can be uploaded with the PD-Italy license. Thank you. --Martin Mystère (talk) 21:17, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

@Martin Mystère: Sorry, my mistake. I missed the PD-Italy tag. Voice of Clam 21:21, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
