Renaming Flickr images

Hi, when you rename a Flickr file, could you please retain the photo ID on the file name? The PID is unique on Flickr and keeping it in the filename assists greatly when checking for non-identical duplicates. This is more important that the account name, as on Flickr account names can be changed many times, but the PID (and user ID, known as the NSID) remain unique and fixed. Thanks -- (talk) 18:01, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Hi Paris 16, I'm curious. Did you derive this file from File:Paris-PontRoyal-PavillonDeFlore-1814.jpg? --Robert.Allen (talk) 05:22, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Yes, with a little restauration.--Paris 16 (talk) 05:36, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
It looks very nice. It's always a good idea to mention the intermediate source. I'll add some notes to the file page, if that's OK with you. --Robert.Allen (talk) 05:42, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
OK, thank Robert.Allen!--Paris 16 (talk) 05:45, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
Please edit, if I got anything wrong. Thanks for making this adjusted version and uploading it to a different page. In my opinion, it's always good to keep Gallica's original image on a separate page. --Robert.Allen (talk) 05:50, 24 August 2015 (UTC)
I've been manually changing the pages that link to the original to your new version. Do you know if there is a tool for doing this? --Robert.Allen (talk) 06:09, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Hello. This message is to inform you that a daily gallery in your userspace, User:Paris 16/Recent uploads, has failed. Due to software limitations, the bot has a hard upper-limit of 2000 files per gallery, while your gallery had 2989 images.

This usually happens because a gallery is too broad, encompassing too many subcategories. Please review the logs here and request that a subcategory be excluded, or narrow your category choice(s).

Please make your request for removal within 4 days, or your gallery will be subject to removal.

Russavia?

On 2015-09-03T18:41:00‎, you uploaded File:Église Saint-Leu-Saint-Gilles, Paris 26 May 2012.jpg and tagged it upon upload with Category:Files uploaded by Russavia. That’s not only untrue, as it was uploaded by you, not by User:Russavia, but more so as this is a user who was banned from all WMF wikis in a hugely polemic case. There’s no good explanation for this, but just don’t do it again.

Aile Henri IV (Louvre)

File:Paris 16 sandbox 17.svg

What source do you cite for this wing name? This wing is usually referred to as the Lemercier Wing or in French the Aile Lemercier. Or at least, I think this is what you intend. --Robert.Allen (talk) 02:46, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Not much, but there are some source for "Aile Henri IV" [1], [2]. Aile Henri IV is not Aile Lemercier. You can see here.--Paris 16 (talk) 03:14, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
With your first link you have confused "Alle- magne" in the first column with "Henri IV" in the second column. Henri IV did not really add to the present-day Sully wing, he added the Grande Galerie, Pavillon de Flore, and to the Tuileries Palace (in particular the dome, later replaced by Le Vau). --Robert.Allen (talk) 03:22, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
You created a very detailed map with lots of names, but I find it rather confusing, it is much too detailed and there is too much information on it. Also, what is your source for the naming of the parts of the west wing of the Sully Wing? You've split the wing into 4 subsidiary wings besides the 3 pavilions. I'm unfamiliar with this procedure. In the books I have read, the Lemercier and Lescot wings both have east and west facades. --Robert.Allen (talk) 03:41, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
I found a link which explains this name. It is an alternative name for the Aile Lemercier (see this snippet view on Google Books). The staircase north of the Pavillon de l'Horloge has also been called the escalier Henri IV, but Alexandre Gady, who wrote the 2005 monograph Jacques Lemercier, writes that this name is improper (p. 376 [it was built under Louis XIII, not Henri IV]). The same also undoubtedly applies to calling the wing after Henri IV. --Robert.Allen (talk) 06:57, 19 October 2015 (UTC)
@Robert.Allen: I found this link and we can say the Aile Henri II is not the Aile Lescot (page 3). So maybe "Aile Henri IV" is not an alternative name for the Aile Lemercier as you said.--Paris 16 (talk) 17:22, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi Paris 16, This is a very interesting link with lots of great information on the chiffres. I think you may [not] be correct:

 • The first example on page 3 "Henri II (Cour Carrée, aile Pierre Lescot et aile Henri II)" shows a chiffre for Henri II, a wide H surmounted with a crown. This is definitely found on the east facade of the Lescot wing (see here and here). "Aile Henri II" may refer to the western-most part of the wing on the south side of the Cour Carrée, but our pictures of that facade are not detailed enough to determine whether this chiffre is found there or not. Maybe someone can go over there and look for them.
 • The second example "Henri II (Cour Carrée, aile Henri II)" shows a different, more complex H, but with corbels, fr:Corbeau (architecture), above it. There are certainly corbels on the south facade, as well on the Lescot facade, at the top of the second level. Chiffres are seen in Androuet du Cerceau's engraving of the second level of the Lescot facade (under the corbels, centered over the window pediments; see here). I don't see any sign of it on the west facade of the aile Lescot, which many refer to as the aile Henri II (see here).
 • The third example "Charles IX (Cour Carrée, aile Charles IX", with K overlapped with reversed K, may also be found on the south facade somewhere, probably further east.

Hopefully someone (you?) can go photograph these chiffres and tell us exactly where they are. Then we will understand where these wings are. --Robert.Allen (talk) 22:03, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

 • According to Berty (1868, see this plan) the aile Lescot was constructed under Henri II, the first 5 bays of the south wing (counting west to east, starting with the bay with the first door in the current day facade) were built under Charles IX, and the next 3 under either Henri III or Henri IV. All of these bays are west of the current-day Pavillon des Arts. According Bates Lowry's thesis, the major sculptural decoration of this part of the south wing took place from 1556 to 1562. This would mean the earliest was under Henri II, and later under Charles IX. The last 3 bays (west of the current-day Pavillon des Arts) may have been even later (at least according to Berty), so maybe some of these bays were decorated under Henri IV. [The ninth bay (with the door) may have been added added by Louis Le Vau c. 1659 or later, when the medieval Tour de la Chapelle was torn down to make way for the extension of the south wing.] --Robert.Allen (talk) 01:43, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
 • Lowry, Bates (1956). Palais du Louvre, 1528-1624: The Development of a Sixteenth-Century Architectural Complex (thesis/dissertation). University of Chicago. OCLC 214308093. ProQuest

--Robert.Allen (talk) 01:43, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

 • By the way, Catherine Grodecki published an article titled "Les marchés de construction pour l'aile Henri II du Louvre (1546 - 1558)" (OCLC 888346197). These are the contracts for the construction of the Lescot wing. --Robert.Allen (talk) 04:28, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
 • @Paris 16: , After going over this article in detail and looking back at some other sources, I have concluded that the caption "Henri II (Cour Carrée, aile Pierre Lescot et aile Henri II)" is inexact writing. It doesn't mean these are different wings. They should have written something like "Henri II (Cour Carrée, aile Pierre Lescot, aussi appelé aile Henri II)". If you send me a message via Wikipedia e-mail, I will be happy to send you a scan of a figure and caption from Yvan Christ's book on the Louvre, which will help to clarify this issue. (Because the photo was taken after 1923, I can't put it on the internet, but limited sharing of a copy between two individuals for research purposes is permitted.) Best, Robert
Hi Robert.Allen! I don't known how to send an email via Wikipedia. But maybe you can do it, because my Commons account is "Enable email from other users". I really want to stop this question and modify my Louvre plans.--Paris 16 (talk) 18:32, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

(If you have spam filtering enabled, my first e-mail may end up there, so be sure to check for it. I will send it now.) Best, Robert
@Paris 16: , OK I sent a quick scan of the whole page. It is 1.6 MB, hopefully not too big for e-mail. --Robert.Allen (talk) 18:59, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Subsidiary wing names

I think a lot of these minor wing names you are adding are just going to confuse people. If you want to change, for example, Category:Sully Wing (Louvre) to Category:Aile Sully (Louvre), that would be less confusing. I still favor using the English form, since these are in Category:Wings of the Palais du Louvre, not "Ailes du Palais du Louvre". I have no objection to use Aile for the minor wings, which was already used here. (I haven't gone around changing all these things.) You asked me about the use of the English "Wing" in the category name. I explained why I used it. If you disagree, you can always make your case.

If you look at the Louvre website, in particular the Atlas database (make sure you are searching by room), you will find that present-day Palace is divided into three main wings Richelieu, Sully, and Denon. This greatly simplifies things. All these other minor wings belong to one these. I did split out the Grande Galerie and the Rohan wing as separate wings, since I suspect a lot of people will find this better. That is something we could discuss before making a lot of changes. I started adding these categories in order to organize the artwork room categories by wing. That was my starting point. Then I quickly saw the categories were useful for organizing a lot of other categories by wing, and particularly for creating categories for differentiating and organizing pictures of facades. --Robert.Allen (talk) 03:10, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

Here's another source I used. Check this web page. Scroll to the bottom. You can download pdf files in multiple languages. Naturally I used the English version. On the second page of the pdf, you can see that the three main wings of the palace are listed: Richelieu, Sully, and Denon. Everything is organized under these three names. --Robert.Allen (talk) 08:24, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
I saw the plans (English and French) on the web page of the Louvre Museum many times. But that is a simple plan for the visitors. For organizing the pictures on Commons, we need a plan with more details. I want to change only the categories like Category:Sully Wing (Louvre), not Category:Wings of the Palais du Louvre. And you use Rohan Wing for all the north west part of the Louvre, maybe it is wrong.--Paris 16 (talk) 14:02, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Main wings of the Louvre
Obviously the Louvre is complicated and naming is not always consistent in different sources. The northwest wing is called the Aile Napoléon or Aile Nord in Yvan Christ's 1949 book on the Louvre, which I also used. Andrew Ayers' book calls the stretch between the Pavillon de Marsan and the Pavillon de Rohan (built by Percier & Fontaine) the Rivoli wing. Maybe I got confused when I tried to find the modern name, but I see the Musée des Arts décoratifs website states it is located in the Marsan and Rohan wings. I don't advocate getting rid of wings Richelieu, Sully, and Denon. Too many guide books and publications by the Louvre use these designations. Maybe it is better to rename Category:Wings of the Palais du Louvre to Category:Primary wings of the Palais du Louvre and put there just three categories: Aile Richelieu (Louvre), Aile Sully (Louvre), and Aile Denon (Louvre) and add a simple map showing what each includes and English text explaining that these are the primary sections of the palace and that Aile means wing in French. Then the naming of all wings will be consistent on Commons. Also, maybe we should move Grande Galerie to category Aile Denon (Louvre); and Aile Rohan to category Aile Richelieu. I think most people who add pictures to Commons will find this less confusing. Very few will know the names of the subsidiary wings. --Robert.Allen (talk) 20:49, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
This guide states that the Rohan wing houses three museums: Musée de la Mode et du Textile, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and Musée de la Publicité. If you know where these are, then you know where the Rohan wing is. Here is another, which says the Musé des Arts décoratifs is in the Pavillon de Marsan and the Rohan wing. --Robert.Allen (talk) 22:56, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
I agree with you. We should create 2 categories: Primary wings of the Palais du Louvre and Minor wings of the Palais du Louvre. Both this categories are subcategories of Wings of the Palais du Louvre.--Paris 16 (talk) 15:44, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
If we're going to use aile for wing, we may as well use all French. An alternative might be Category:Aile Sud de la Cour Carrée (Louvre) to be more consistent with other Louvre category names. --Robert.Allen (talk) 06:01, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Facade categories

Maybe, for example, Category:West facade of the Sully Wing (Louvre) could be renamed to West facade of the Aile Sully (Louvre). This category could be for pictures that include more than just a paviion or one minor wing. If we have a lot of pictures primarily of a particular pavilion or a detail of the pavilion then put it in a category for the pavilion. If we have a lot that focus on the facade of one minor wing, create a category for the facade of the minor wing, such as "East facade of the Aile Lescot" or "Cour Carrée facade of the Aile Lescot". But, if a picture includes more, then put it in a more general category like West facade of the Cour Carrée. --Robert.Allen (talk) 20:49, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

For facade categories, I think we should use the names of the minor wings. It will more accurate.--Paris 16 (talk) 15:52, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
The use of a wing name for a facade is common shorthand (see métonymie) but inaccurate. Most minor wings and pavilions have two facades, and to be accurate the facade needs to be specified. So for instance, an image that shows most of the east facade of the Cour Carrée would have to be in three categories, possibly named: Category:West facade of the Aile Est septentrionale (Louvre), Category:West facade of the Pavillon Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois (Louvre), and Category:West facade of the Aile Est méridionale (Louvre), all just to replace Category:East facade of the Cour Carrée (Louvre). And why do you call the latter inaccurate. It is used in several books (for examples, see here). Then think about the south wing: it also has two minor wings and a central pavilion, so for instance, we would have Category:North facade of the Aile Sud orientale de la Cour Carrée (Louvre), Category:North facade of the Pavillon des Arts (Louvre), and Category:North facade of the Aile Sud occidentale de la Cour Carrée (Louvre). Or are you proposing to rename these minor wings on their south facades? To use different wing names for the opposite facades of the same wing (like you do for the east side of the Cour Napoléon on your map) is in my view both inaccurate and misleading. --Robert.Allen (talk) 23:32, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello, could you please explain why Rue Nicolas-Flamel would be the correct spelling?! Neither on the street signs, nor on paris.fr there are any hints at that! Regards, XanonymusX (talk) 15:07, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I am not sure but you can read this article. This is the form for the name of all street articles in French Wikipedia.--Paris 16 (talk) 16:03, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks a lot, I didn’t know this! Sorry for the inconvenience, then. Very interesting rules, we have quite similar ones in German, actually (and also there the street signs mostly disobey to the rules). Regards, XanonymusX (talk) 22:24, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

--Tangopaso (talk) 10:20, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Marsan vs Rohan wings

Hi Paris 16, I've tried to fix some of the errors I made, when I confused these names, so when you have time you might want to check out the cats of the pictures in Category:Aile de Marsan (Louvre). I still have a question though: do we know for sure that the north facade of this part of the Louvre is considered to be the north facade of the Marsan wing rather the north facade of the Rohan wing? I've been thinking perhaps only the southern row of rooms are considered to be the Marsan wing, and the northern rooms might be considered part of the Rohan wing? Do you know? Best, --Robert.Allen (talk) 21:17, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

@Robert.Allen: I think you are right. The northwest part (bigger) is the Aile de Marsan and the southeast part (smaller) is the Aile de Rohan. The facades mean nothing.--Paris 16 (talk) 05:48, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Balloons in Paris

--Tangopaso (int:Talkpagelinktext) 09:22, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
