Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

File:Sobolo.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Copyright violations
[edit]
Hello Jwale2.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

Deleted content
[edit]
- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. And also:

File:Group PIc.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:T.T.I CREST.jpg
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:T.T.I CREST.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Thanks for uploading File:Agony of Christ.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Agony of Christ.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.
We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules. In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files. Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions. Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Thanks for uploading File:DJ Shiwaawa.jpg.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:DJ Shiwaawa.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- Hello Yann, I seeked permission from the original authors of the recent images I uploaded on wikicommons but unfortunately they gave me images which have some right protection, I am still working it out with them for them to provide me with the full right of the images and my apologies for that.
- Moreover, I applied for a project grant of which I have up to the end of this month to submit my report of which I just found out that my wikicommons account has been blocked, please can you revert it so that I can be able to submit my project result for my report. File:Beach Test1.ogv has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Wrong structured data via computer-aided-tagging
[edit]Hi Jwale2, I just found that you added many tags to the structured data of my photograph File:Pedicularis rostratospicata subsp helvetica RF.jpg using "computer-aided-tagging", i.e. an image recognition tool. Thank you for this attempt. However, please note that you added four tags that are wrong, i.e. "Barlia", "Lythrum salicaria", "Lythraceae", and "Orobanche". I deleted these tags (and I also deleted the wrong tag "Arctostaphylos uva-ursi" from File:Vaccinium vitis-idaea (flowering).jpg and also the tag "spring", because the photograph was taken in July). Some of the other tags for File:Pedicularis rostratospicata subsp helvetica RF.jpg are just supersets of the tags that had been there before ("plant" and "angiosperms"), but I have not deleted these, even though keeping them is probably somewhat similar to overcategorization. Adding tags via an image recognition tool requires some deliberation, because adding too many wrong tags to the structured data might make this feature unreliable and unusable. It is my personal opinion that a tool based on image recognition is not helpful for plant images and I stopped using it, but it might be better for other subjects of photography. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 11:01, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
- Same goes for File:Oberbaumbrücke November 2013 01.jpg, where you added lots of depicts statements, none of which were correct, since a simple depicts to d:Q695082 would have sufficed. Your edits are unfortunately not helping, please stop. See also the discussion at Commons:Village pump#Depicts. Sebari – aka Srittau (talk) 13:48, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

- Thanks (even though I assume that your entry is for Jwale2, not for me)! After reading some of your linked pages I removed the rest of Jwale2's additions to the structured data of my photograph File:Pedicularis rostratospicata subsp helvetica RF.jpg. The only one with some value might have been "flower", but my photograph is not an image of a single flower. Therefore, I removed this, too. --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 14:22, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:National Volunteers Day 1.png
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:National Volunteers Day 1.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image".
Thank you! |

File:International Podcast Day 2022.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Thanks for uploading File:Addo Jnr (cropped).jpg.
Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Addo Jnr (cropped).jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |
