JFK files
Aloha! I noticed you started to upload the new JFK files. Are you continuing? There are a few more @ [1] . Only a few thousand.... Cheers! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:25, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Hedwig in Washington: There's way too many for me to upload on my own as the Commons only lets you upload 50 at a time and there's thousands of files to upload, so I put in a batch upload request. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 00:50, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- You can up that to 500 files. Jarekt figured that out:
# go to this stage using Chrome browser
- open java script console with Ctrl + Shift + J
- paste "mw.UploadWizard.config.maxUploads = 500;"
- now if you open an album or a photostream with up to 500 images you can upload them all at once
— Jarekt
- Anywho, thanks for your fast reply! I completely forgot to check the batch upload pages. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:24, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Hedwig in Washington: Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately the download links seem to be very slow for me at the moment; I'll try again in a few minutes. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 01:59, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- I guess I will stop since I am upload conflicting with you. Artix Kreiger (talk) 03:50, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Artix Kreiger: Keep uploading. I'm only uploading the July release files at the moment so you can go ahead and upload the rest of the October release files instead. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 03:51, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Artix Kreiger: Great, problem solved! You still need to keep an eye on the batch upload and let'em know when your done. 6k files is fun. See you next year! Oh, and you have to read every document then add categories and a full description! Just kidding --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:59, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Hedwig in Washington: The July uploads have all been finished. Now just got to wait on @Artix Kreiger: to finish with the October release batch, if he hasn't already. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 04:49, 4 November 2017 (UTC)

Question
How did you mass rename the JFK files to "X name (November 3rd release)"? Artix Kreiger (talk) 16:20, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Artix Kreiger: Download "Advanced Renamer" here. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 22:24, 17 November 2017 (UTC)
Say...
What's the deal with this flag? Are its colours really authentic? In use up 'til 2003? Director (talk) 01:52, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
- IIRC, the exact colors of the Italian flag were not specified until 2003. In 2003, the exact shades were specified and those shades were used until 2006, when the colors were again changed to their present shades. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 02:14, 4 December 2017 (UTC)
- I understand that, but where'd you get the colours on File:Flag of Italy (1946-2003).svg? Are they based on something, or..?
Are they perhaps, for some reason, the best we can do for the unspecified period? I ask because, if so, I'd like to apply them to the flags of the Kingdom as well. And the Italian Social Republic. Director (talk) 02:33, 4 December 2017 (UTC)- Theoretically they could be any shade of green or red since they were unspecified; I picked those colors since they were the ones I found on the very oldest SVG here. You could also try the CIA World Factbook's shades from 2000 here. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk) 02:38, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Not USA
Hi, is it really necessary or helpful to change Wikimedia file names so they follow Wikipedia's WP:NOTUSA article guideline - changing USA to U.S., when US is what the guideline actually suggests for most cases? Using multiple .'s in a file name is not permitted in many file systems, though apparently it's OK in Wikimedia. Unnecessary name changes create mismatches between original copies and the Wikimedia copies. I've uploaded hundreds of files over the years with 'USA' in the file names, and sometimes re-upload new versions of them. If you feel you must or should continue, then please use either 'US' or 'United States' when renaming, rather than U.S. I've started using the full name in my latest uploads. Thanks, Brian W. Schaller (talk) 05:10, 27 December 2017 (UTC)
- No need to worry, moving the file creates a redirect that redirects the old filename to the new one as if it were never moved at all. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 05:17, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

Ink Spots
Hello. (new to wikis, sorry if this is the wrong place to post such messages).
You've uploaded a recording of "If I Didn't Care" by The Ink Spots to wikimedia -- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:If_I_Didn%27t_Care_(1939),_by_The_Ink_Spots.oga It is stated on the file's page that this recording is in public domain since the copyright holder failed to renew the copyright. However, UMG lists this song on their website and says that it is distributed by them. Have you conducted research about the copyright status of the recording? I would like to use this recording in a project of mine, but it must have no copyright issues. I would be very grateful if you could tell me how to reproduce your research and determine whether this recording is indeed in the public domain. ~ Maknvl (talk) 16:52, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- To be honest, I'm probably the wrong person to ask. You're better off asking somebody more knowledgeable in this stuff. Here's the U.S. Copyright Office records which can be searched. For what it's worth, the Ink Spots stuff on YouTube haven't been taken down for copyright as far as I know like other more recent songs have. Not the end all be all, but it's something. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 04:57, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

File tagging File:MattShirk.jpg
This media was probably deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:MattShirk.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. File:Patch of the California State University Police.png is a bad faith attempt to avoid Commons:Deletion requests/File:Patch of the California State University Police.jpg. - You know, if you could admit any wrongdoing, I might unblock you. But you can't; it's all lawyering and deflection. Textbook w:WP:GAB issues.
- When I blocked your account, I looked over your talk page history, and I found two separate DRs over the subject on just the first page. That makes three times, including my own DR. Administrators are not stupid; they can read that history too, and no one will unblock you if you continue to maintain otherwise. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 22:54, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

- It's a faithful 2D derivative file of a work under Creative Commons licensing. That is, assuming the original uploader, @Dragon Lil Brad: , is the original copyright holder. You'll have to ask him since he was the one that uploaded the file originally under the Creative Commons license. Regards, – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 05:36, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Copyright violations
Hello Illegitimate Barrister.
You have uploaded one or more files that are copyright violations. You have done so despite requests from editors not to do so, and despite their instructions. See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules by subject matter useful. This is your last warning. The next time you upload a file that violates copyright, you will be blocked. Please leave me a message if you have further questions. |

Dutch anthem
Hello, as you might know it's Kingsday today in the Netherlands. I went to the English Wikipedia and listened to the anthem by the US navy band, noticing that it was played much too fast. On the file page I found out that there is a version with the correct (or in any case much better, this one) tempo, but as attempted to revert to this version, it seems it doesn't alter the tempo. I come to you because you made a .wav file out of the original file that is used on the English Wikipedia? Could you perhaps modify or reupload the .wav / .ogg file so that it has the correct tempo? I assure you it is no joke, a quick youtube search will show that it really is too fast. Thank you very much in advance! IJzerhouwer (talk) 18:49, 27 April 2018 (UTC)
- Tempo sounds fine to me. Either way, Commons frowns upon artificially changing music file tempos. We'd have to find and upload one that is performed at the tempo you desire. As for the revert not working, you probably have to clear your cache and purge the page before listening. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 19:28, 27 April 2018 (UTC)

NIST 911
Hi, I'm taking a look at Commons:Batch_uploading#NIST_FOIA_9/11_videos, thinking about testing out a generic upload. However the copyright looks dubious to me. On Youtube the standard YT license applies and though there is a reference to the "crowdsourced" website 911datasets.org, it is unclear why the files uploaded there are credibly public domain.
Could you explain why you think we can be confident about releasing these as PD on Commons? Thanks --Fæ (talk) 16:10, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

File moving guidelines
Please review the file renaming guidelines before moving any more files. In particular, changing hyphens to dashes is rather useless and can actually make file usage more difficult. The hyphen is on most keyboards, while the em- and en-dashes are not. "Files should NOT be renamed only because the new name looks a bit better."
There can also be some technical problems caused by renaming files, as noted at the Village Pump. Guanaco (talk) 06:33, 29 June 2018 (UTC)

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open!
You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.
Dear Illegitimate Barrister,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.
In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.
Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

what is the reason for file moving guidelines ?
Hello I ask to you, ¿why do you change the hypens (-) for dashes (–)? It makes very difficult to use the files, mostly because no keyboard has that typography.
Thank you.--Shadowxfox (talk) 15:40, 3 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi, We don't create categories with "Photographs of" on Commons. Technically, almost everything on Commons is a photograph (except sounds and drawings, even videos could be considered as photographs), so we would have millions of categories "Photographs of X" with exactly the same content as category X. Regards, Yann (talk) 14:27, 25 September 2018 (UTC)

endash vs emdash
We need to come to an agreement on whether dates for file names should use an endash or emdash. Right now there is a lack of uniformity and we have both taken our own paths. I use an endash because that is the version included on standard QWERTY keyboards. Is there a reason you have a preference for the emdash? Fry1989 eh? 17:42, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Current state of Union of South African flag
I do not think the current purple(!?) colours should be used compared to the previous dark blue version. The CMYK values given are even incorrect as the values for "solway blue" produces a bright green instead of a blue! Further, they look very different to how the flag is depicted anywhere else... Including the example image given above the CMYK values by the south african vexillogical institute itself!! That example, by the way, also closely matches the previous and common depicition. http://www.savaflags.org.za/spec/South%20Africa%20-%20National%201928-1994%20-%20sheet%201.pdf I thnk the dark blue, normal colours should be restored instead of this unusual purple. If the recommended (not official) CMYK values were to be followed, it should also be green not blue, according to the current source.

Need your advice
Greetings! I am continuing cleaning and organising Finnish Air Force categories. Next on my list is to nominate to delete this file , because it is just a duplicate of this file. I know that I have to replace these files in global Wiki before nomination, but there is a problem. Some people is Spanish Wiki using it as their personal signature, and I cannot edit is. Please, advice what to do. Sincerely, --Kwasura (talk) 01:01, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
- Well, they're not exact duplicates. In any event, you can request one be deleted and that a redirect be created to the other file in its place. That way the signatures won't be affected. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 08:49, 6 November 2018 (UTC)

Nazi flag name change
Hi, I saw u changed the name of the Nazi German flag which is fine, but hundreds of uses of it across the wiki is now errors! Is this just because this is a new change that is not fully updated everywhere? Because where it says Flag of German Reich (1935-1945).svg (without flagicon etc) its an error instead. Will this fix itself or has this change brought a lot of problems!? --Havsjö ([[User talk:Havsjö|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 13:51, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry about the mixup. It should be fixed now as far as English Wikipedia is concerned. When a file is moved, a redirect is created to the new file so there shouldn't be any problems. FWIW, it shows up just fine for me. Try incognito mode on your browser or clearing your cache and cookies and see if that helps if there's still problems. Taking care with transfers
Good evening.
When making transfers from Wikipedia, could you please take care to clean up the upload data? The default text by the bots is often insufficient.
For example, this image,
- Its description is actually the source.
- Is not "own work by original uploader".
- Original upload date is irrelevant.
- It is not PD-US-no notice.
- The page has no categories, nor is it even marked as uncategorized.
Thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 01:50, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Former flag of Iran
Dear Illegitimate Barrister, recently you moved "File:Flag of Iran with standardized lion and sun.svg" to "File:State flag of Iran (1964-1980).svg". In my opinion, the new file name is misleading. The modern drawing of lion and sun just used in the late 1970's. Unfortunately, the timing of standardization of flag of Iran in wikipedia is not correct and in 1964 there was no change in this flag. This misleading information comes from here. In this website, it is mentioned "From the chronology, the change from 1:3 to 4:7 proportions most probably occurred ca. 1964". However, according to the Iranian governmental regulations, the ratio of flag of Iran was determined 2:3 in 1935 and 4:7 in 1958. Unfortunately, this mistake is also seen in the flagicon and flagcountry template of Iran and I do not know how to correct these templates. New Jersey state flag
I have reverted your change of the flag from May. Despite the supposed use of US Army buff, in practice no NJ state flag actually uses that shade. Even the state website on state symbols (seen here shows a distinctly more yellow color. The reverted to version is correct and should not be changed, despite the difference from the supposed written standard, which has never been followed.
