Notification about possible deletion
[edit]Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.
If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Yours sincerely, (`・ω・´) (talk) 08:46, 8 February 2021 (UTC) Hello, the information I just provided there is copied belo: Hello, on https://viralzone.expasy.org/contact The following information is provided: All pictures in ViralZone are copyright of the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. Permission is granted to use the pictures in academic theses or non-commercial powerpoint presentations, provided the source is acknowledged. Plese check the information providedby Philippe Le Mercier, SIB provided at my home page user:Ernsts This is as follows:
Message from Philippe Le Mercier <Philippe.Lemercier(at)sib.swiss> as of 2021-02-01 concerning the ViralZone images:
"As for the images, the license has changed: they are now under Creative Commons CC BY 4.0. It is stated on the home page of ViralZone. This means you no longer have to ask permission to use them in any media, provided you credit the source. Here is an official statement in case you need it:
I hereby grant you permission to use ViralZone graphics in Wikimedia commons. Please cite the source: ViralZone, SIB Swiss Institute of bioinformatics
If you need any other official documents from SIB, you can ask legal(at)sib.swiss or me.
I draw a rabies virion during my thesis and the image went viral, many people around the world used it in their talks/posters/theses. I realized there was a need for free, accurate and beautiful images, I am glad the SIB supported the project and ViralZone was born.
Good luck with Wikipedia commons, it's a huge project.
Sincerely yours,
Philippe
In case of any questions, please contact Phil or me. Pleas check if the delete reqestis still justified after considering this. Kind reqards, --Ernsts (talk) 21:04, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Ernsts, the deletion page links to https://viralzone.expasy.org/872 which gives a different answer. (I don't understand the legalese, or how that's different) but unfortunately that seems to not work for Wikimedia? I came here from en:Pseudomonas virus phi6 and the article certainly does look better. We don't have any other electron microscope pics for some viruses, I've noticed. Anyway I hope you can find and add virus imagery that we can use. Invasive Spices (talk) 22:30, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Thanks. I‘m afraid SIB's 872 page is outdated, presumably caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Their root pages tells CC 4.0 at the bottom right, you may find the discussion about that matter continued at Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Ernsts, and User:Doc James has cared about the matter. As a result, the delete request has already been removed from the ViralZone images. The others likely will follow. Regards --Ernsts (talk) 22:43, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
- Just had a look into the article you mentioned and saw that image '255355 web Phi6 virions c.jpg' is not from ViralZone but from EurekAlert (Usage: free), those delete requests have not yet been deleted. As I understand Doc James at the discussion mentioned above the delete request should bee removed soon. Please refer to the disc there. Regards --Ernsts (talk) 23:10, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
- As far as I see all images have removed the delete note as they have passed licence check, regardless if their source is ViralZone or EurekAlert. See Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Ernsts. Therefore the matter appears to be solved.--Ernsts (talk) 14:54, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:248829 web Siphoviridae infecting bacterial cell.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:248829 web Siphoviridae infecting bacterial cell.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Das reicht mir einstweilen.--Ernsts (talk) 10:08, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

- @GeoWriter: Am Ende der von Dir angegebenen Webseite steht: "Unless otherwise indicated, text and images on this website have Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International licenses."
- The matter has been clarified by @GeoWriter: .
- So it is actually what I feared. As I was not aware of this difference, I had assumed that Wikipedia conversely allows non-commercial use only. In thats case, it would probably have made no difference whether CC-BY-NC-SA or CC-BY-SA was guaranteed in the source. One would not have had to pay any attention to this "small" difference for uploading.
- Unfortunately, I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed and misled in my ideas about Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons. I'll therefore probably not upload foreign images any more. Concerning own images I'll no longer upload these, because I personally can only accept non-commercial use (CC-BY-NC-SA). For foreign images the risk of doing something wrong again is too high for me. The non-licensed uploading of material to the Internet is an absolute no-no for me.
- However, I am still considering whether to use images that have already been uploaded in new or newly translated articles could be an option, as well as editing for captions of existing images.

- English translation:
- I refer to what has already been mentioned above at this place.
- In a discussion about the license questions of the deleted pictures I have, as one will understand, no interest. This is also true for any future cases, should there be any more.
- Since then, my participation in Wikimedia Commons is limited to editing (correcting and adding) metadata (e. g. captions) of existing images.
- An exception is at most the creation of image extracts, but only as long as there are no problems. I ask for understanding. With kind regards.

--GPSLeo (talk) 07:12, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
