Wikidata tool for the speedy creation of a Creator template

[edit]

Hallo Ebrahim, please, can you linked this wikidata tool in the top of the creator template? greatings --Ekenaes (talk) 23:07, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ekenaes: Hi. Honestly I don't have enough confidence to do so, can you please raise this on the discussion page of that template and/or ping User:Jarekt? Thank you −ebrahimtalk 13:10, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
File:PEO-octocat-1.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Questions about 3D models on Commons

[edit]

Ebrahim,

In 2015 you submitted one of the most popular ideas for the Community Wishlist Survey about enabling the sharing of 3D models on Commons. There's technical work underway to make this happen with the STL file format.

We'd like to get your input on how the Commons community might respond to concerns over the uploading of 3D files, given that it might now involve new patent and copyright issues that weren't as relevant before for 2D files. For instance, if someone uploaded the 3D model of a potentially patented work how would the community respond? What can the community do in advance to discuss and prepare for the possibility of these things happening?

Additionally, we'd like to know where it would be best to make contributors aware of the policy around items of this nature. For example, the community may wish to ensure there's a reminder of policy during the upload process and again on the file page itself. Where else might the community want to look to be prepared before the feature is enabled? Should we perhaps update commons guidance linked from the Editors' index, such as the Commons:Licensing, the Commons:How_to_detect_copyright_violations, and the Commons: non-copyright restrictions?

If you have a few minutes to think about this and provide feedback it would be greatly appreciated. If you aware of other Commons contributors that might have some thoughts, please include them in this conversation as well. Thank you for everything and I appreciate your time.

Yours, CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 15:46, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

User:CKoerner (WMF): I am very happy on seeing this Is progressed, I think the best way forward would be to collaborate with OpenSCAD and other already established 3d models FOSS communities (and/or, I don't know, maybe thepiratebay(!!) physibiles uploaders?). You can possibly find some common people with OpenSCAD community here. I hope you would allow formats that people from that community could interoperate with Commons. About copyrights, some can imagine and build this system in order to keep Commons admins able to deal with copyright issue but as that would be beyond wmf capabilities and destiny I guess you should convince Google or Tineye itself to go for such system which doesn't seem to be very feasible but perhaps worth trying. Thanks −ebrahimtalk 16:37, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you ebrahim for the feedback. I'd love to reach out to some of the existing communities to let them know what we're up to and encourage them to participate. I'd like to take these same questions to the larger Commons community so look for a familiar-sounding Vilage pump post soon! :) CKoerner (WMF) (talk) 15:46, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

[edit]

Hello Ebrahim, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Bonjour,

Pourquoi supprimer les émojiones ? --FructidorAn3 (talk) 19:50, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning File:Feedbin-Favicon-search.svg

[edit]

The page containing the file c:File:Feedbin-Favicon-search.svg says positioning error. What is meant by that? Wereldburger758 (talk) 11:09, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can ask from the person who put that tag but basically it means librsvg (or the author) is failed to detect/put correct bounding box for the work and should be fixed sometime. −ebrahimtalk 13:46, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Google emojis

[edit]

Will you be uploading the new Google emojis separate from the blob emojis (as discussed at Talk:Emoji#Noto_Color_Emoji_.28Android_O.29)? I saw that some (Category:Noto Color Emoji - Updated) were already uploaded atop previous releases rather than as separate files—are you reverting those too? czar 18:52, 25 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Yes if I do the uploading I'll do such. No I don't have a plan for that, have a look at "So our rule is something like [...]" of that page, that sounds like a good policy I believe but if anyone disagree that can be discussed there. −ebrahimtalk 08:08, 26 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see why you wanted an old version of File:Emoji u1f486.svg as you used it on your talk page on English Wikipedia :) I don't oppose with restoring their old versions however the problem is they didn't use semantic branch (or other git's mechanism like tag or branch) for noto emoji project versioning so distinguishing minor fixes from major style changes was hard. In other words with each change to their git repository I had one of these options:

  • Replacing all of them
  • Uploading all of them, even the not updated ones with to different names (which exact duplicate images probably would made Commons unhappy)
  • Skipping the not updated ones (which would have made linking the images hard)
  • Not uploading any update (even new Emojis additions)

Which I had to with the first option. Now that they've promised to tag a release before bulb style emojis complete revamp, putting them to a different naming just can make sense but I have no solution in mind (and enough motivation to be honest) for putting older ones on a separate places but maybe that can be handled with manual upload or something (cc: User:Czar, User:Nclm) −ebrahimtalk 13:26, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

:) Yes, that one, but I'd also like to save the set for posterity. To clarify, all of the "blobs" are overwritten on Commons as of now? I don't know whether Google's "blob" removal applied to the non-face emojis, but what if only the old versions of the face emojis (the blobs) were uploaded separately? I don't know the face emojis' file name range or how to pull the git repo from a paste date to automate their upload. Would you know how? czar 16:36, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
User:Czar: Current version that we have on Commons which is the most recent public available version still have some of blobs design but the new design which can be found here is a complete redesign, it is like Google gradually came to an understating that blobs are not the way to go but just now decided to replace all of the Emojis with a new design. Also no problem about IPBE, I tried to avoid bureaucracy, I don't have much activity there after all :) −ebrahimtalk 20:16, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Me too. Okay, I'll add this to my list of things to pursue myself someday. Thanks! czar 20:20, 16 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
User:Czar: Hi there! I managed to upload old versions also, Category:Noto Color Emoji KitKat‎ Category:Noto Color Emoji Lollipop‎ none of them (even File:Emoji_*) are going to updated anymore so you can use them reliably :) −ebrahimtalk 08:53, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! Thanks! czar 16:40, 29 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'm just curious, regarding the "Created with Adobe Illustrator" parameter included in the {{Igen}} template on these (or at least the ones I looked at, didn't check them all)... this seems appropriate to "own work" uploads where the author is providing that incidental information; I didn't see anything at the github repository or in the source file to suggest any specific software was used. Do you have a source for this assertion? --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 19:55, 4 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Junkyardsparkle: Hi there. I don't remember that I've added that template to those files I guess however the person who has added the template to them had seen some evidence on the source (and maybe you've looked on a replaced version which no longer had them). Thanks for the interest! :) −ebrahimtalk 17:51, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, the ones I looked at (example) didn't seem to have any edit history after upload. Maybe it was inadvertantly included in a copy/paste? If you can confirm that that's the case, I'm willing to change them, if you don't want to. :) --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 20:04, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Junkyardsparkle: You are right. That would be great! Thank you! :) −ebrahimtalk 06:26, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, as soon as I made the change I realized that this template actually was added after the upload by a bot, so it looks like I was bothering the wrong person after all, sorry! :) --Junkyardsparkle (talk) 17:46, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, you should ask from the project owner of that Emoji collections to do that and then you can upload that files from what they've done by yourself even. You can find project link of that projects inside the description and I don't have any affiliation with them to contact them more effectively honestly and I don't have enough skill to modify these vector files which is not a cool decision anyway. Hello

I'm writing you as one of the most active Commons users right now. Since a while now, the idea of a dedicated Commons conference has been floating around. But since the last Wikimania concrete steps have been taken to actually make it happen next year. If you're interested in participation or maybe willing to help organize the first ever Commons Conference, I invite you to check out the project page and leave your comments; or just show your support for the idea, by signing up.

Cheers,

Thanks for uploading File:Seyed mohsen sajadi.JPG. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Seyed mohsen sajadi.JPG]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Image undeletion

[edit]

Hi Ebrahim, Could you undelete File:Female performing fellatio on male 2.jpg and File:Female performing fellatio on male.jpg please?, I don't quite know why these were deleted but as these 2 and 2 others are now at DR I thought maybe they should be reevaluated, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:35, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. As noted, uploader requested the deletion and the noted reason was model request. If you still don't agree with the deletion however let me know. Thanks −ebrahimtalk 06:10, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ebrahim, Ah sorry I missed that, Well as you can see here and here the file was kept back in January '18 so I'm under the impression they've just tagged these as speedy delete under "uploader request" - Even if they were the uploader they would need to seek consensus for its deletion after that amount of time remaining,
Also forgot to say but Happy New Year :). –Davey2010Talk 17:23, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would say lets still keep that right to the uploader in this case, at least for the sense of empathy with the uploader and model. Happy New Year to you also :)
Hi, Well could you undelete it atleast for the sake of DR - Both are at DR so it would make sense for people to judge themselves - Also anyone can say "model wants it deleted" .... the person has provided no proof he even knows this person, I can't remember what the images even are but I feel backdoor deletions like this should not be done! - They sent it to DR and so from that point onwards it should be down to us to decide, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:26, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, I'm assuming the ones you deleted are probably related to the other 2 that wasn't deleted, Okie dokie ignore the above these are delteable, Thanks for your help anyway :) –Davey2010Talk 20:29, 1 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Doctor of Directions deletions; seems we have somewhat overstepped

[edit]

I think that there may have been an over-enthusiastic nomination and deletion process for the uploads of Doctor of Directions. We have walloped a new user pretty hard, and possibly not shown enough good faith. I would agree that there is a definite case that there has been Google View uploads and that these should have a process and where they are from that site, they should be deleted. That said, this user has uploaded photographs that they have clearly labelled {{Own}} (or similar) which have been speedily deleted, example.

We seem to have erred in our overarching approach. Yes, I know that it does not help when a user undoes such additions, though think back to your new days, and trying to understand our complex processes, it simply is not easy, and we have been here for years. The user is currently blocked, we need to halt our deletions, allow the user to talk on the DR, and for us to patiently assist this user to make their case, to identify their photographs, and for those to be retained, and for the CV images to be deleted.

@BevinKacon: to note.

billinghurst: Hey there, sure, commented on that RfD before seeing this, I don't believe that image is own work however as the similarity with Special:Undelete/File:F8_at_its_original_Langley_Park_Metrobus_Terminal.jpg and pattern of license plate blur but feel free to revert any my actions. "though think back to your new days" I agree with you, feeling that more in Wikipedia projects than Wikimedia Commons however. −ebrahimtalk 13:01, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Not trying to pre-judge anything here, just hoping that we can take the time to judge appropriately. I do know that when we are in deletion mode each of us can be a little "heads down, bum up" in our cleaning queues.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:31, 2 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki of Functions followup

[edit]

Hi there, I'm a researcher for the Wikilambda project. Last month we held a naming contest and I'm following up with those who voted to see if you might be willing to provide some feedback to help guide the project.

This would be a 45 minute conversation about your past experience with other Wikimedia projects and thoughts about the future of this new initiative. I'm hoping to gather a wide range of perspectives so I'd be interested in your opinion regardless of whether you plan to have further involvement.

As a way of saying thanks, the research team is offering a $35 gift card (in your local currency) for participation. We could chat by phone or through a webpage for audio conferencing.

If you're interested just pick a time slot from this calendar link:
https://calendly.com/wikilambda/voter

Hope to hear from you soon!

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons!

[edit]

Dear Ebrahim

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC

[edit]

Hello Ebrahim,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:53, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

File:انسان ماهر.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Thanks for uploading File:Emojione 1F1F1-1F1F8.svg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

OpenMoji - Update

[edit]

Hey Ebrahim,

First of all, thank you for all the awesome work you do for wiki projects.

Recently, I started updating the UI of https://www.wikiskripta.eu, a Czech wiki project made for and by medical students. To make it feel more modern and cohesive, I wanted to use icons from OpenMoji. As a wiki project, Wikiskripta supports linking images from Commons.

However, newer emojis (such as the anatomical heart 🫀 or lungs 🫁) are not yet uploaded to Commons.

So I wanted to ask you if you could update the OpenMoji collection on Commons, as you have done before?

Thanks again for everything you do!

Best,

Questions about the Data namespace

[edit]

Hello! Because I saw that you are able to modify pages in the Data namespace and I have a question about it, I hope you can help me.
There is a discussion going on about Commons talk:Galleries#How to handle Gallery pages with a wrong format?. One of those wrong formats for galleries is a table without any images, but probably good enough to keep (see for example Tombs in the Panthéon de Paris). We wonder whether the Data namespace could be a solution. But I do not have any knowledge about Data pages and I could not find a page with information or instructions about the Data namespace. My questions are:

  1. Is it allowed to have a table like Tombs in the Panthéon de Paris in the Data namespace, that is a not a page with (for me) complicated program coding as I see in all the Data pages, but with regular wiki code for a table?
  2. What are the extensions "tab" and "map" doing: are they just an extension or does such an extension actually do something?
  3. When someone later on puts images to such a table (with regular wiki code for a table), is it technically possible to rename it to a gallery?
  4. Is it true that there is no page with more information about the Data namespace? (I found Commons:Data, but that is a disambiguation page and Help:Data redirects to Commons:Data.)

JopkeB (talk) 04:25, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I created a table Data:Tombs in the Panthéon de Paris.tab based on that page with help of this JavaScript code I just wrote (ignore if you aren't familiar with programming)
copy(JSON.stringify($('.mw-parser-output tbody > tr').get().map(x => $('td', x).get().map((x, i) => (i === 0 ? $('a', x)[0] : x).textContent.trim())), 4, 4))
Edit that page in any way you like and don't worry about the result, if you found the page not useful let me know so I can delete the page. I didn't know about the license so you can edit part also. I don't know if this is useful for your case or not but I try to answer your question and I think you will understand more from it when you try to edit that page for yourself,
  1. They are in json, I don't know whether it has a simpler visual editor like editor but JSON considered fairly easy to edit stuff also for non programmers but it's totally understandable if you still don't feel comfortable with. You should just put sometime with it and you will going to like it I think.
  2. .tab is for tabular data and table like, .map for points and shapes in maps and the extensions do matter AFAIK, they show what the Json file contain.
  3. No, as far as I know, but it's possible to read that using some Lua file and create a dynamic table from it.
  4. It's support comes from this extension of mw:Extension:JsonConfig MediaWiki, I think some of Q/A's in mw:Extension_talk:JsonConfig are useful. You can ask more there for specific details of it also I think.

Ebrahimtalk 18:20, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the answers. So the answers are:
  1. No, it is not allowed to have a table with regular wiki code for a table in the Data namespace, it should be in json.
  2. The extensions "tab" and "map" do matter. You cannot use these extensions without a content that contains json.
  3. No, it is technically not possible to change a Data namespace to a gallery page, the gallery page should be created as such.
  4. There is no documentation in Commons about the Data namespace, it is though in MediaWiki.
Is this correct?
For now please keep the table Data:Tombs in the Panthéon de Paris.tab. After your confirmation I'll take the answers to the discussion and discuss it there. JopkeB (talk) 03:47, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, just about 4, I don't know if there is any documentation in Commons or not, I learnt about this feature from examples, Data:Emoji/List.tab and later Data:Wikipedia statistics/data.tab had very interesting application. −Ebrahimtalk 09:46, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'll change 4. to "There is no known documentation in Commons about the Data namespace, but there is in MediaWiki." JopkeB (talk) 17:04, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
