Commons:Commons Conference 2018
Commons Conference will not take place in 2018! Any ideas for a future edition are still welcome. |
---|
This page is intended to gather ideas for the first Commons Conference in 2018. Everybody is invited to contribute ideas on how to make it happen.
Scope
[edit]The users on Commons are currently split into many different communities; be it by language or regarding their main field of work on Commons (e.g. photography, categories, etc.). Thus, the main goal of this proposed conference should be, to increase international collaboration on Commons and create a stronger sense of a Commons community.

Possible locations
[edit]General requirements:
- International airport within approx 50 km (depends on transit options from/to the airport)
- should be generally "near" the "center of gravity" of active global Commons Users
- visa-free access or reasonable visa requirements (visa on arrival, etc.)
see also: Hackathon handbook on Mediawiki wiki (doesn't necessarily apply in every aspect) and Step by step guide for finding the right venue for a conference on Meta
- + Good infrastructure (transit/internet access)
- - problematic visa situation for many potential participants (as seen at former conferences in North America)
- - expensive travel for Europeans
Barcelona (parallel to the Wikimedia Hackathon 2018)
[edit]- + organization
- + my second home, i can organize. --Ralf Roleček 02:32, 15 August 2017 (UTC)
- + freedom of panorama
- (-) similar visa situation to Iceland
- support
- Support commons and hackathon share a lot --Ilya (talk) 22:13, 9 September 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, Ilya, for those interested in both topics, I am not really sure, though, that the overlapping is really big. --Poco2 18:36, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- Support slight support but in my opinion an organization of a conference is a complicated activity mainly connected with the VISAs (Montreal docet). Combining Hackathon and Commons cam give more strength to the Conference and can save a lot of money connected with the sharing of costs. --Ilario (talk) 20:28, 11 September 2017 (UTC)
- Support Conducting this conference along with Wikimedia Hackathon will save lot of money, also it'll be easier for participants of both conferences. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk · mail) 03:27, 24 October 2017 (UTC)
- When the overlap is that small it is hard for me to see how that reduces costs. Photographers are not likely to participate in the hackaton and vice versa. And doing two different things that closely is rather complicated for organizers. Kruusamägi (talk) 11:44, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

- Dear @Cmglee: The current situation in Tunsia is secure,Tunisia's crime rating is low; police and military forces have increased their effectiveness in recent years.the current problems of risk are at the level of the borders between Algeria and Tunisia but for the rest of the regions the current situation is favorable (see this link): https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia Ayoub Fajraoui (talk) 08:32, 11 September 2017 (UTC)

User:Frank Schulenburg (Event organization/WMF Financing Liaison)Sorry, but I thought this was about the Commons Photographers, not about Commons as a whole. Unfortunately, I won't be able to support a larger event. I was assuming we'd gather with 20–30 photographers. Everything beyond that is also beyond my capacity (and interest) as a volunteer. --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:58, 16 August 2017 (UTC)- User:MB-one (community-centred event organization)

[edit]- ... Wikimania. -- Effeietsanders (talk) 22:00, 9 September 2017 (UTC) interesting topics, but too much overlap with the wikimania visitors. too expensive to fly everyone in.
- ... another Wikimedia event. Dimi z (talk) 11:11, 11 September 2017 (UTC) Sounds like a worthwhile initiative. I would encourage this to take place alongside another Wikimedia event (Hackathon/Wikimania/Regional Conference) so we can save at least some of the cost of flying people in.
