It was proposed to have three rounds last year. What do you think? —Mono 22:17, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- It's a lot. I am not sure, if not at all opposed to this. -- Rillke(q?) 20:33, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- I don't oppose strongly... yet a proposal which fails to get seconding opinions could/should be dismissed. I suppose (as I stated at workshop page) we may have similar effects with a R1 midterm report in a sortable table that contains thumbnail, mid-term vote count, category of all the candidates - so that voters can sort and check the table to find which images are likely to be finalists and which are not. --miya (talk) 05:50, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
- Like I said below, I'm against a 3 rounds POTY since I do sincerely believe is just creating more problems, since my only complain for everyone in HK when I talked about POTY was that the contest sounds like a beauty pagent where only the "pretiest" wins. I believe if we add yet another layer of votes where images will be analised like beauty pagents, the "wow" factor will win always over the quality. Béria L. Rodríguez msg 03:11, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Centralnotice would be unnecessary during the beta testing periods. According to meta:Stewards/Elections 2014 the steward voting will be held from 8 to 27 February 2014. It would be favorable to start R2 2 weeks after R1 closure. So how about the following schedule. --miya (talk) 13:18, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Last year was 75 edits across projects before Jan 1. I'd suggest lowering it to 50, but last year's was OK. What do you think? —Mono 22:10, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'd be OK with either of them. -- Rillke(q?) 13:17, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Using banners
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
We want to avoid banner blindness and maximize participation (this is one downside to three rounds). With each testing period, there will be no banners up. There are a few options for scheduling the banners (it's best to do this around WMF things, but usually they add banners at the last minute anyway).
- Banners on throughout all rounds except for testing periods, shown to logged-in users on every page for ∞ times.
- Banners on for specific days during all rounds, shown to logged-in users on every page for ∞ times.
- Banners on throughout all rounds except for testing periods, shown to logged-in users 3 times. After that, the banners disappear until the last day (for another 2 times). This is technically feasible; they used this for the fundraiser this year.
What do you think? —Mono 19:52, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- As less annoyance as possible, please. I've completely blocked CentralNotice using an adblocker. -- Rillke(q?) 20:33, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- I'd suggest #3 for that, considering my personal feeling when the popup for a discussion on Meta appears for the 27th time. I'll ask a fundraising person how they did that with the cookies. —Mono 20:56, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
- I would go with 3#, but with a watchlist notice runing all round. (Somenting simple and without formating, so we dont annoy people in Commons) Béria L. Rodríguez msg 02:56, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

- The WMF cannot approve the cookie that makes this possible in time for our banners. Instead, banners will remain around 20-40% for most of the contest depending on participation. The first and last couple of days of each round will be 100%. —Mono 01:29, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- But we can put in some JS that prevents showing the banner if the user is obviously not eligible in the project they are currently visiting?
- or maybe there is even in option in the CentralNotice control panel. -- Rillke(q?) 06:05, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
if (wgNoticeUserData.editcount < 75) { // don't show }
- Yes, that's a good idea. —Mono 17:29, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

- Set nominated FPs
Resolved
|
---|
I restored set-nominated FPs to Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Galleries/Table (I don't know why they were removed from 2013 FP galleries, though).
Basically I chose the first file listed in the FP nomination pages. If the author would hope to change the coverd file, I would not oppose to it.--miya (talk) 17:55, 5 January 2014 (UTC) I added Naica (◆2013/12-38) and Pook's (◆2013/10-112). If there are other set-nominated FPs, please add them here.--miya (talk) 01:29, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
How can we inform the voters that these are set-nominated FPs? --miya (talk) 14:33, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

- Huge Galleries
We have two very huge Galleries: Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Gallery/Nature views (103) and Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Gallery/Constructions and buildings (88). Any idea whether/how to split them? -- Rillke(q?) 23:02, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
- I don't have a strong opinion about "whether". But if it is necessary to split them, "Nature views" may be split to "waterscape" and "Landscape", and "Constructions and buildings", to "short-distance view" and "long-distance view".--miya (talk) 08:21, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
- Checking the categorization
Please check the categorization at Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Candidates. Please note any mistakes. This page is automatically parsed by the new POTY LUA parser and changes to it will be reflected in all galleries accessible from Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Candidates. -- Rillke(q?) 22:46, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

Continuing from the workshop, I would like for us to further evaluate the plausibility of implementing easily editable file descriptions. Resolved

Hello,
At least for me, they are not. When I look at the German header on the main page, I see Runde 1 endet am February 07, 2014., which sounds really strange to me, as the date is written in a form not used in German (plus the month isn't translated here - interestingly enough, February is translated in the header of other subpages). In the introduction it is even stranger, as the months are translated but date and month are in the wrong order, as it sais Die erste Runde beginnt am Januar 17, 2014 (00:00) und endet am Februar 07, 2014 (23:59) - correct would be Die erste Runde beginnt am 17. Januar 2014 (00:00) und endet am 7. Februar 2014 (23:59).

The photographers bias
The POTY intro says:
- "Picture of the Year 2013 is the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons.
- "Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the past year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year."

Hi. Why on Earth is this page tagged not per the documentation and protected to prevent TAs without admin flag to fix it? --BaseSat (talk) 13:14, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- @BaseSat: Because it is a high-traffic page (in the near future / (redirect)) and because misleading information could mislead the voters in favour of a special candidate, for example. I don't have the time to examine what exactly is tagged not per the documentation so I would be glad if you could be a bit more specific. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 15:42, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- It is loads easier to fix that than to explain. High-trafficness is a rubbish reason actually (sorry for quite rude opinion I don't mean to offend anybody)- e.g. on wikimania2014wiki there are pages linked from CN but there are no major problems with them. Headers' titles are tagged wrongly, there are a unnecessary tags and so on. --BaseSat (talk) 19:02, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
- @BaseSat: I've reduced the protection level. Please make your edit, but try to minimize any formatting problems. All of the translation tags on that page are there for a purpose (I tagged the page myself) so please do check your work. Thanks, —Mono 19:51, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
