Recent upload problem

I have had not problem in uploading files from my PC (with a .jpg suffix) until the last few days. Now I always get a message saying "Unknown error: "unknown"." Help please. --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 11:46, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

The Upload Wizard (the default interface for uploading files to Commons) is unfortunately pretty much in a perpetual state of brokenness. It isn't broken for everyone all the time, but I don't recall a time since it was introduced that we went more than a few days without people reporting enigmatic problems with indefinitely spinning wheels, unhelpful error messages, or simply no way to move forward. Have you tried Commons:Upload? It tends to be much more reliable. LX (talk, contribs) 20:26, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. A pity because it's worked (almost perfectly) for me for years. I tried Commons:Upload, but it froze my PC (twice). Ah well! --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 11:40, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
@Peter I. Vardy: As a last resort, you can use this link, which avoids all the automation. You will have to manually fill out the information template, however. Revent (talk) 16:51, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Tried again. Froze again. --Peter I. Vardy (talk) 14:30, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Suggestion—A couple of weeks ago, I was having a similar "freeze" problem when attempting to upload a new image file to Commons through the old upload form using Mozilla Firefox Web Browser. I temporarily switched to another web browser (Google Chrome), and the image file uploaded correctly. Woodlot (talk) 14:39, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Slashes disallowed in filenames?

Now that I'm at 18,037 files uploaded, I figured I would have known what characters are disallowed in uploads, but apparently not. I tried to upload an image as File:Green Township's edge, 39/1097.jpg, but I was given an error message because the system thought I was trying to upload as File:1097.jpg, and it consequently presented the usual "are you sure you want to do this" message because it's so similar to File:1097. Miss Hunter og Wilson i Karjol - NB bldsa OTO0399 A.jpg and because 1097.jpg, by itself, is blacklisted. The image itself was uploaded fine, and I just put it at File:Green Township's edge, 39-1097.jpg instead. Note that I was using Special:Upload, just as I always do.

Questions:

  1. Why wasn't the slash allowed? Is this a normal thing, or was it some odd mistake? Since we can't have subpages in filespace, I don't imagine that it would be treated as a subpage indicator
  2. Where do I get a full list of disallowed characters? I figured I'd get one on the upload page, but all I could find was descriptive and concise filename, and that goes to a page that doesn't mention filenames, aside from telling the new uploader to Enter a title for the image. Use plain, descriptive language.

Nyttend (talk) 18:43, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

PS, I uploaded a junk image with the same name, was given the same warning, and upon me telling it to ignore the warning, the file ended up at File:1097.jpg. I just now tried to move it to File:Green Township's edge, 39/1097.jpg, but the software rejected the attempt because "The name you have specified exists. Choose a new name, please." Nyttend (talk) 18:49, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

@Nyttend: I don't think the upload failure itself was really an error (the file page for File:Green Township's edge, 39/1097.jpg would be a subpage of File:Green Township's edge, 39), but the failure of handing it 'gracefully' is probably worth reporting, and we should probably specifically note that '/' characters cannot be in uploaded file names. It is actually 'possible' to have subpages in the 'file page' namespace.... it came up recently that there is a tool for overlaying maps onto Google Earth that uses '.kml' subpages of the file pages to hold the relevant data. Revent (talk) 19:42, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Note that MediaWiki, in the final step, stores the files in with their names entered in the upload form; thus a slash would be disallowed on MediaWiki running on Windows and on Unix, the files would end up in subdirectories. Even if MediaWiki would store the files more intelligently, which name should be suggested for the user when downloading the file? -- Rillke(q?) 20:55, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification; I had no clue that subpages were possible in filespace, and I definitely didn't know that we were taking advantage of this possibility in a useful manner. While filepages don't have a button for it, it's still possible to get to Special:MovePage for a file. Go there, and try to move a file to a slashed name, and you get You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reason: The target filename is invalid. The same thing results from an attempt to insert a bracket, although the rationale is longer: You do not have permission to move this page, for the following reason: The requested page title was invalid, empty, or an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title. It may contain one or more characters that cannot be used in titles. I don't care which one, but one of these should be emulated by both the upload form and the little popup that appears when you try to upload a file. Neither one gives you a "normal" warning with a slash, and both of them convert other illegal characters into something else. I undeleted File:1097.jpg and attempted to move it to [[File:1[097.jpg]], but instead of presenting me with an error message, it moved it to File:1(097.jpg. I also attempted to upload a different image as [[:File:10[97.png]], but instead of presenting me with an error message, it uploaded the file as File:10-97.png. Upload and move should have the same effects, and both should give a short error message instead of accepting the wrong thing. Nyttend (talk) 13:31, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
MediaWiki's subpage feature is disabled in the File namespace so File:Chartres.svg/overlay.kml is not a real subpage. This for example means that the top doesn't have an automatic link to File:Chartres.svg, and {{BASEPAGENAME:File:Chartres.svg/overlay.kml}} produces the whole Chartres.svg/overlay.kml and not Chartres.svg. Stops before uploading

I try to upload a photo using the Upload Wizard. However, just a millimeter before the photo is uploaded the blue bar stops and remains there while I read "processing files..." This is from the same camera that has been used for most of my Commons uploads. Could it be that the non english letter in the file name is a problem (Straßenname Balve.jpg)? Shouldn't be according to the help pages... --Gereon K. (talk) 22:34, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
P.S.: It worked with Commons:Upload. Couldn't find a 4.0 license there though. --Gereon K. (talk) 22:46, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Flickr picture

I was wondering why admins always delete this flickr picture when i upload it, but they don't delete these pictures [1], [2], [3] which are from the same account/album/date as the first picture? --Eurofan88 (talk) 19:03, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Adding my user category

There seems to be a problem when I try to add my user category (Category:User:Janezdrilc - Gallery) in the upload wizard. When I select category, the wizard insert only "User:Janezdrilc - Gallery", without "Category:" (see diff for example). It looks like the program is confused because of double ":". --Janezdrilc (talk) 13:58, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

@Janezdrilc: Yes, indeed, you are 'doing it wrong', in that you are assuming that the Upload Wizard is smarter than it is. That tool is really only meant for the very simplest use cases. :/ Revent (talk) 18:12, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Just double-checked that HotCat isn't confused by this.. just adding the user category with it after uploading might be the easiest fix. Otherwise, using the 'main upload form' (at Special:Upload) will let you bypass the problem, since it uses HotCat to add categories. Revent (talk) 18:21, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Lot of images with different template:artwork infos upload

Hello! I would like to upload a large number of images to wikimedia commons, using the artwork template. How I can do this? I checked "Communist" but the template is different. Thank you! EVDiam (talk) 19:38, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello EVDiam, with commonist you can do for each image individual information. Regards --Jean11 (talk) 20:09, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Hello Jean11. Thank you for your answer! I am wondering if there is any tool which gives the ability to choose the template or gives the "artwork template"? EVDiam (talk) 13:53, 5 November 2015 (UTC) ?

Hello EVDiam, maybe Com:GLAMwiki Toolset. Maybe you ask en:Wikimedia New York City. Regards --Jean11 (talk) 18:09, 5 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Jean11! I will ask, best Regards. EVDiam (talk) 18:59, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Error: Unspecified error.

Has anyone ever encountered a little warning message of this sort? The warning message was a temporary thing, of the same format as the little notice you get when you add an existing page to your watchlist. I attempted to upload an image, using the basic Special:Upload form (as I always do), so I browsed through the hard-drive folder and selected the image that I want to upload, but as soon as I clicked the correct image, I got this warning, and the little box to the right of the filename wouldn't display its usual thumbnail of the image. This happened several times (refreshing the page, leaving the page and coming back, etc.), but the same warning came every time. I tried to upload anyway, and it worked (it's the image appearing here), and I got the same message when trying to upload a different image (so it's not a weirdness with one specific file), so I can't explain what's going on. I've uploaded lots and lots of images from this camera, including several just today (e.g. File:Miltonsburg northern.jpg was taken just a few minutes beforehand, and I had no upload problems), so it's not as if there's a fundamental problem with the camera. Any ideas what problem(s) I'm experiencing, and how (and whether?) to fix it/them? Nyttend (talk) 19:38, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Including License information under Summary

Is there a way to have licensing information included under Summary/Permission while using the upload wizard, instead of automatically creating a seperate license header? And why isn't this standard practice? --Abderitestatos (talk) 14:34, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

@Abderitestatos: License headers can go in the "Permission" section of the information template (and quite a few uploaders do it that way), but in many cases because of their size they are very inconvenient if wrapped by the other template... something like {{Self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0|author=Person}} would make it really hard to see the summary information. The upload wizard makes some very basic assumptions, including that you want to use a 'License' section.. it also does not have options for most of the allowable licenses. If you want more control over how the file page will look, you should use one of the other upload forms. Revent (talk) 23:52, 7 November 2015 (UTC)

sideways image upload

I am trying to upload an image to Commons. The photo was taken in portrait mode, and I have corrected the orientation using Windows Photo Viewer. However, when I upload the image it shows up sideways. Please help me fix this glitch so I can add some nice images (my work) to Wikipedia.

hkeyser@precisiongeosurveys.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hkeyser (talk • contribs) 16:46, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Please have a look into our FAQ, section "Why did my image rotate for no reason?" and below. In a nutshell, your photo camera saves the image with metadata hinting clever software to rotate your image correctly if it was taken in portrait mode but Microsoft Software is not clever in this regard. As the result of using Microsoft Software, the photo is rotated twice, one time by the Microsoft Software when you click rotate, the second time at Wikimedia Commons because it detected the camera information. IrfanView, Xn-View, Photoshop and zillions of other programs treat that correctly. Just try to open an original portrait orientated photo from your camera in IrfanView and you will see that it is displayed correctly. -- Rillke(q?) 17:15, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
@Hkeyser: I suggest using GIMP (www.gimp.org), which is free, and far more functional than Photo Viewer. When you open an image with 'EXIF orientation' in GIMP, it immediately prompts you to strip it out and instead rotate the actual image itself. Revent (talk) 05:51, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
I also keep having a file rotated by the Upload Wizard into landscape mode, when the image was taken in portrait mode - but I haven't changed the orientation since taking the image, either on Windows Photo Viewer or anything else. ? PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 23:40, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
When you say "in Upload Wizard", are you referring to the thumbnail there or the finally uploaded file? File:Salvia confertiflora 123.JPG, for example looks fine, and I can see that it wasn't touched by Microsoft Software. Out of interest, which Browser (and its version) are you using and on which operating system? -- Rillke(q?) 23:54, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
I'm referring to the thumbnail that's displayed part-way through the upload process; is this not indicative of how the file will appear in its final form? The file in question doesn't show up in my uploads because I kept aborting the upload process every time it showed part-way through as being in landscape form. I'm on Windows 8.1 and use Firefox (not sure which version). PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 17:00, 29 October 2015 (UTC)
There are two types of preview in UploadWizard. One is generated directly in the browser and might not be correct, the second one is created several seconds after the file has been successfully uploaded (in theory). -- Rillke(q?) 21:33, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

This is a page for requesting help with uploading files to Wikimedia Commons. Whatever it is that you're trying to ask, it doesn't seem to be about that. It sounds like what you may be saying is that the Mediawiki interface or templates here on Commons for the Sindhi language may need some improvement. Translations on Commons are done in a few different ways. If you give some examples of the elements that you have in mind, we can point you in the right direction. HOW CAN I LOOK AT PHOTO LISTED ON TEXAS HISTORIC SITE PAGE?

I want to look at a file (i.e. picture)listed in a table on the Texas Historic Site Wikipedia page for Tom Green County: Angelo Heights District in San Angelo. I created an account as instructed, and then clicked on the name of the historic site (i.e. Angelo Heights District) in the table that appears on that Wikipedia page. But then I got a screen with the message "pick file to upload." When I clicked on that icon, I was sent to a file folder (aka "directory" in the old dos days) on my own computer. There are no instructions for looking at the file I want to look at, which is the picture referred to in the Wikipedia table on the page for Texas Historic Sites as "Angelo Heights District." How can I do that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mbtg1946 (talk • contribs) 20:27, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

After a fair bit of searching, I'm guessing you're talking about en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Tom Green County, Texas – specifically the first entry. That entry does not have a photo, which is why you are asked to provide one. The link you are clicking is for uploading (providing) an image, not downloading (viewing) an image. @RomanKraus lbf: Normally, you would use the relevant 'upload campaign' page to upload it, and it would add the image to the competition automatically. Since it's already up, it can be done manually, but need to verify... it should be in the "German" competition, right? Revent (talk) 12:13, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

uploading image help

Hello,

I am trying to update the image (organization logo) on the DLNA Wikipedia page. The current logo has "sm" on it and it needs to be replaced with the logo that has the registered ("R") mark. I tried uploading the new image but a message came up saying I need to have made at least 10 page edits (I am a registered Wikipedia user). Trying to find the easiest and quickest way to make this change. The image is the same except the registriation mark is outdated.

Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Poffy22 (talk • contribs) 22:17, 16 November 2015‎ (UTC)

en:File:Dlna.svg is non-free content, locally hosted over at the English Wikipedia project and appearing in en:Digital Living Network Alliance under fair use provisions. Since it is not free, it cannot be hosted here on Commons. So this is really a matter for the English Wikipedia help desk rather than the Wikimedia Commons upload help desk. Uploading image of book front cover

Which license tag should I use for a book front cover for which the copyright is held by third party (who will be acknowledged)? I have read https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Copyright_tags but it's complete gobbledygook to me. MrArmstrong2 (talk) 13:02, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

@MrArmstrong2: Hi,
You can't upload this on Commons, unless you have a formal written permission from the copyright owner. It can be uploaded on the English Wikipedia under a fair use rationale. Regards, Yann (talk) 13:30, 19 November 2015 (UTC)

This file contains HTML or script code...

As part of a resent batch upload I encountered 30ish tiff files which all failed to upload due to a This file contains HTML or script code... problem. Is there any way of figuring out what exactly (e.g. which exif tag) triggered this? If not would it be possible to set up an external tools (e.g. on labs) which would run the same test but spit out the specific tag causing the problem?

Cheers, André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 10:54, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Here is the source code of the function responsible for this. The way it's implemented, you're not going to get a whole lot out of it, but we can at least conclude the following:
  • The problem is in the first 1024 bytes of the file, because that's all that's checked
  • It's either one of the tags <a href, <body, <head, <html, <img, <pre, <script and <table or something that looks like a JavaScript URL.
I'd start by looking into the metadata of the files to see if anything pops out. I don't think the right way forward is an external tool, but rather improving the detectScript() function with some awareness of metadata structures, which would enable more informative error messages. LX (talk, contribs) 16:04, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
I concur. This kind of matching also causes false positives sometimes. -- Rillke(q?) 19:53, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks LX for investigating. We'll look into the files and see what may be causing it. I guess even just passing on some of the info caught by wfDebug could be useful for figuring out what is going wrong. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 17:13, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
You can use File Analyzer, it will scan the whole file for potential conflicts. AFAIR, it is also an issue when using chunked uploading, and one of first 1024 bytes of the chunks matches one of the "precautionary measures" built into MediaWiki. -- Rillke(q?) 19:49, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. Since the files are chunked I guess we have to expand our search for the cause. I'll try the File Analyzer to see if it can tell us something more. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 11:43, 12 November 2015 (UTC)
We've checked some of the files against the File Analyzer which says they contain a <pre-tag but non such can be found when we look into the images. Simply resaving the files didn't fix the issue either so unless someone has a good solution I guess these 30ish files will simply have to be left. /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 09:49, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
@André Costa (WMSE): could you upload them elsewhere? I'd like to have a look into them (or at least one). If File Analyzer sais there is a <pre>, and it is wrong, I'd like to fix it. -- Rillke(q?) 21:35, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
@Rillke: I put the file (and description page) over at dropbox. If you find anything then let me know. Thanks /André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 11:57, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Modify a file of wikimedia and reupload it

Can I modify a file that is uploaded to commons.wikimedia and reupload the modified file? If yes, then what options must I choose? I click "this is not my work", and then it says "Now tell us why you are sure you have the right to publish this work". What should I choose here?

Currently I uploaded this file https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:%CE%A0%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%BA%CF%81%CE%B5%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B9%CE%BA%CF%8C%CF%82_%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%B9_%CF%87%CE%BF%CE%BB%CE%B7%CE%B4%CF%8C%CF%87%CE%BF%CF%82_%CF%80%CF%8C%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%82.png

the original file is this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Illu_pancrease.svg

In this case I used the same licence that was used by the original file (I hope that is right). But what must I do if the original file hasn't got a licence? (and it is original work of the person that uploaded it?) What option must I choose then?

At "Authors" I wrote the previous author and included my name, like someone suggested me to do. I hope that is right too.Altick (talk) 01:23, 23 November 2015 (UTC)

Yes, you can modify and reupload any file on Commons, because only files that are licensed in a way that allows derivative works are allowed here. The way you have handled it is great, though I have two comments:
  • Your modifications to the file actually count as your own work - technically, your work is not {{PD-USGov}}, only the original file is. You should choose a new license for your file, such as {{Cc-zero}} or {{CC-BY-4.0}}, unless the original file has a "Share-Alike" license that requires you to use the same license.
  • I added the template {{Derived from}} to your file to make it clear that this is a derivative work of that file.
Another unrelated tip: you don't have to use full URLs to link to files on Commons. Just use two square brackets like this: [[:File:Παγκρεατικός και χοληδόχος πόρος.png]] = File:Παγκρεατικός και χοληδόχος πόρος.png. BMacZero (talk) 19:22, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, it makes sense now. I changed the license of the files I uploaded, and also did the other changes you suggested.Altick (talk) 22:13, 25 November 2015 (UTC)

I assume you mean .docx, rather than "doxx". We don't host .docx files. There are two main reasons for this:
  • .docx is a file suffix typically used to denote files that primarily consist of text. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. We primarily host media files: images, video and audio. See Commons:Project scope/Summary.
  • .docx is a file suffix typically used to denote an essentially proprietary and pseudo-standard file format. Commons only hosts free content in free file formats. See Commons:File types.

I want to upload a photo from my gallery to the page what should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Waruhiushee (talk • contribs) 09:48, 01 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Waruhiushee! It's not really clear from your question what it is you want to do. Normally, you would upload files from your computer to Commons and then potentially use them on a page on Commons or another project. You don't upload files from your gallery; instead, your gallery showcases the files you have uploaded. (None in your case.) You also don't upload files to pages; instead, you upload them to Commons and edit the pages (e.g. an article on English Wikipedia) to include the file based on its name here on Commons. An introduction to uploading files to Commons can be found at Commons:First steps. Information on how to include uploaded files in Wikipedia articles can be found at en:Wikipedia:Picture tutorial on the English Wikipedia. If this doesn't answer your question, please elaborate a bit more next time. LX (talk, contribs) 09:46, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mbozdag! {{TC-Kitap kapağı adil kullanım}} is not a license template that exists or ever has existed here on Commons. According to Google Translate, "adil kullanım" means "fair use", but fair use (which is not a license, but a limitation of copyright law in certain contexts) does not apply to Commons, so we cannot host content with reference to fair use principles here. However, the template does exist on the Turkish Wikipedia. If your intention is to use the images there, you may be able to upload them locally on that project, provided that they comply with tr:Vikipedi:Adil kullanım politikası.

Заранее благодарна за ответ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Яна Сычикова (talk • contribs) 17:46, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by Дедок (talk • contribs) 13:45, 19 November 2015‎ (UTC)

Size max of SVG

Hello, I upload 1 and 2 but impossible to display files. When I try to dispay the file, all pictures of all Wiki websites are offline. I wait few minutes and pictures are back. If I try to display 1 or 2 another time, again offline, etc, etc, etc. So what is the size max of SVG file? --Jesmar (fr) discussion / (en) discuss 17:57, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Someone else might comment on the technical side, but I have a question on copyright. Did you really draw those maps yourself, like you claim? They look rather like Openstreetmaps to me. --rimshottalk 07:33, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
I thought Openstreetmaps is free (no?). Maybe I forgot to put credits. I'm checking. --Jesmar (fr) discussion / (en) discuss 14:23, 25 November 2015 (UTC)
Updated. --Jesmar (fr) discussion / (en) discuss 16:00, 26 November 2015 (UTC)
Looks good to me. For the technical question, you might get more help at the Graphics village pump. It wouldn't surprise me if the files could be made smaller without significant loss of detail. --rimshottalk 19:42, 26 November 2015 (UTC)

Ok, so 10 MB for SVG, thanks . --Jesmar (fr) discussion / (en) discuss 21:43, 29 November 2015 (UTC)

— Preceding unsigned comment added by WM wm WM (talk • contribs) 00:42, 29 November 2015‎ (UTC)
