universe

Hi can anyone advice me of when the word universe came into existance or use? cosmos can be traced back to the greeks and 1539 (antwerp) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Edwinpower (talk • contribs) 22:25, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

This isn’t really an appropriate place for general questions; better would be the Language Reference Desk at Wikipedia. But while we’re here, the English word comes from the Latin universus by way of Old French; according to the OED, its first occurrence with the present meaning (the totality of what exists) was in the late XVI century. Chaucer used the now-obsolete expression “in universe”, meaning something like “altogether” or “overall“, as far back as the XIII c.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:59, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Want to upload an image containing multiple works on Wikimedia commons

I made a horizontally tiling image for a bathroom wallpaper in my game, but would like to release on Wikimedia since it uses images only from Wikimedia.

My question is, do I upload it as my own work or someone else's? I used a total of 8 separate images, all which require attribution. I'm not concerned with receiving credit, I want to make sure everyone is attributed correctly, and someone else in need of a tacky, colorful fish themed wallpaper texture can find one.

For better context, this is what I want to upload: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20855857/frogdays_topicscreens/wp_commons.png

edit: That's the in game version. Here's the full resolution: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/20855857/frogdays_topicscreens/fish_wallpaper_commons.png

And this is what would appear on my "works cited" page:

@Swordofkings128: Commons:Collages should contain all the answers you need and here is an example of how it should look like. Unfortunately, our default UploadWizard isn't really suitable for this kind of uploads. So basically, you have two options: 1) Use the standard method to upload the file as "own work" and edit the file description afterwards to add all the sources, authors and licenses or 2) use the old basic upload form. Please let us know if you need further assistance, as this can be a bit tricky. Cheers, --El Grafo (talk) 10:01, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

Copying templates

Template:!! appears to be the same as the ones on wikt:Template:!!, w:Template:!! and v:Template:!!. These templates do not cite their origin, but I'm guessing it's Wikipedia. For templates developed on one WMF project, is there a general okay documented somewhere to copy templates from one project to another? If so, where? Thanks in advance on this one. --Marshallsumter (talk) 17:34, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

All content of the Wikimedia projects including templates are distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. So, you can copy, of course, provided that you satisfy the conditions of this license. Ruslik (talk) 20:02, 1 October 2015 (UTC)

File:Georg Hellmesberger senior Eduard Kaiser.jpg

Hi, it was pointed out to me by en:User:ClaudioMuc that File:Georg Hellmesberger senior Eduard Kaiser.jpg is probably the wrong person - en:Georg Hellmesberger, Jr. not en:Georg Hellmesberger, Sn. as it matches File:Hellmesberger.jpg that actually has a proper source (this) which matches the dates for Jn.

However I wasn't 100% sure so thought I'd get a second opinion before getting the file renamed - also I wasn't sure how to put a rename request in while making sure no false redirect is left and the pages that currently use it are not wrongly updated leaving the error in place?

Need help with "other versions" upload

Hi, I'm an admin on en-wiki, but image licensing is not my area of expertise. I've made a much-improved version of this rather dreadful image file, but am a bit confused about how to do the link to "other versions" licensing. Can I just upload it with a description? CorbieVreccan (talk) 21:37, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

Ah, when dealing with files by that uploader and a few other users of the same group, you should check the version of the file on this website, which is often larger, or sometimes of better quality, than the version used by those users. In this case, it's the same size, but it's a bit clearer, so you will likely get a slightly better result if you start with this better version. I'm not sure what you mean in your question by "the link to 'other versions' licensing". If you started with the bad version, the one on the page File:Friends and Family. Maypole Dance BAnQ P48S1P00207.jpg, you could just link to that page in the source field of your new version. But if you follow my suggestion and you start with the slightly clearer version directly from the BAnQ website, then in the source field of your new version you would mention that website as the source, plus the template Template:BANQ with the reference number P48,S1,P207 in the parameter. Either way, you would use the same status tags, PD-Canada and PD-1996. One last thing is that despite what is written on the page of the bad version, it is not the original version, so the boilerplate request makes no sense in such cases and you could overwrite that version if you wanted to. -- Asclepias (talk) 23:34, 2 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you! I'm glad it wasn't just me who couldn't make sense of it. CorbieVreccan (talk) 15:12, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi Susan, you haven't been clear on exactly the image in question, but all images on commons should have the licence clearly shown on the image page. All valid images (note some uploads, especially new ones, will have been incorrectly labelled) should have a open licence that allow you to use the image commercially for your book. Note that a lot of the image licences will ask for attribution. If you have further questions please give the full image file name or add a link to the image. Reagards KylieTastic (talk) 15:35, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

At the moment, Commons has Commons:Requested images and Commons:Requested audio and video project pages for requesting specific types of media. Is there an analogous page for requesting the creation of a category or gallery? (Someone has been doing this using a maintenance category at enwiki (that is, requesting the creation of categories and galleries on Commons), somewhere which Commons editors are unlikely to look, and I'd like to know where I should be directing them to instead.) ais523 (w:en:) 08:01, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

I think that's not really neccessary as 1) everyone is able to create a missing category immediately (wanted files are a different thing) and 2) there are Special:WantedCategories as well as Special:WantedPages which contain entries of categories/pages that are referenced but do not exist yet. --Achim (talk) 12:44, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

Template not working on talk page

On User talk:Connorlong90 I added a Photo Challenge Silver template. It works fine on my talk page why I test it, but doesn't expand on Connorlong90's page. Can anyone figure out what is wrong? Thanks. -- Colin (talk) 09:10, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

I'm trying to obtain a release from the copyright holder of this photo that I uploaded:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Chukotka_Expedition_2011.tif&oldid=168865515

When I double-check the link, it does not work. I have uploaded a total of 4 photos, and the other 3 links work. Have I done something wrong? What URL link can I provide the copyright holder in the CC4.0 form, so that he can view the photo I want to use?

(btw, the link works when I am logged into wikipedia, but not when I try to copy it into a search engine, or try to follow the link that I have copied onto the CC4.0 form)

The Rocky Road (talk) 15:44, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your response.

1. This is the problem: If I copy the link and paste it into google, this is the page I get: https://www.google.com/search?q=https%3A%2F%2Fcommons.wikimedia.org%2Fw%2Findex.php%3Ftitle%3DFile%3AChukotka_Expedition_2011.tif%26oldid%3D168865515&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

2. Thanks for pointing out the typo!!! The Rocky Road (talk) 17:03, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Why do you need to search for the image on Google if you already know its URI? LX (talk, contribs) 17:05, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

I'm putting the URL on the CC4.0 form, so the copyright holder can approve. When I track back the link from that form (which is what the copyright holder will do, before he approves) the link doesn't work. I'm asking for approval for 4 images. All of the other 3 links work. The Rocky Road (talk)

Update: I think I can make this work, if I use the alternate address provided above. Thanks to both of you for your help. Chalk this one up to my inexperience. :-/ The Rocky Road (talk) 17:59, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Users shouldn't be unable to use tools to report copyvio or nominate for deletion, protected content

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cc-by-sa.svg is a copyvio; the logos aren't CC-licensed. (See, e.g. https://wiki.creativecommons.org/Frequently_Asked_Questions#May_I_use_the_Creative_Commons_logo_and_buttons.3F and/or recent discussions 'round here). Yet I'm unable to use tools to report copyvio or nominate for deletion. Can someone confirm that this is because this is protected content? I think it's so. If so, that should change. We should not be blocking the reporting of copyright violations. --Elvey (talk) 21:41, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

For some reason the file is protected... is used in some License tags and transcluded in hundred of pages. Is that graphic actually bellow the Threshold of originality in the US? Considering that this file is widely in use, you shuld be considered to discuss this in the Village Pump first. --Amitie 10g (talk) 05:04, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
I think a normal deletion request would be the best venue. That image seems used mostly by one user, through his personal copyright notice. It is not an image used in the normal Commons licensing templates (which seem to use a combination of several single-icon images, perhaps precisely in an attempt to avoid the potential problem, although that may not avoid it if the apparent result is similar). -- Asclepias (talk) 18:47, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Well, if the file is deleted witout taking any care, the Custom License tag used by one user will be broken. And, this icon is almost the same as the one used in CC-BY-SA. In that case, is better to edit that Custom License tag with the elements of the CC-BY-SA, and the result is exactly the same. For that reason I opened a thread in the Village Pump, to avoid disruptive deletions. --Amitie 10g (talk) 00:37, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
One can nominate for deletion normally with Commons:Deletion requests/File:Cc-by-sa.svg and an entry to the daily list. A sysop can then add a tag to the file description page. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:30, 26 September 2015 (UTC)
Elvey: All high traffic pages (that includes all licensing icons) are protected. Please take the advice above and make an entry on the daily list. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 14:41, 28 September 2015 (UTC)
Please do so yourself if you think it's in order. There's a copyright violation problem, but I don't think deletion is the best way to address it, so I decline your advice. I've raised a concern: I'm unable to use tools to report the copyvio. I said "We should not be blocking the reporting of copyright violations". That's been ignored. The tile of this section is "Users shouldn't be unable to use tools to report copyvio or nominate for deletion, protected content". That's been ignored too. I've NOT asked why it's protected. Yet the subject has been changed to that for some reason. :-( --Elvey (talk) 05:03, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
The inability of non-privileged users to make edits to file pages to add deletion temples is a Mediawiki issue, and not something that can be addressed by Commons admins. Protection is either 'on' or 'off', there is no functionality for allowing only certain edits. Revent (talk) 01:29, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Marking a flickr item as reviewed

For File:Victoria, BC - Fan Tan Alley - entrance from Fisgard 05 (20336928650).jpg, apparently FlickreviweR had a problem of some sort verifying this. I'm the photographer, I'm the uploader, and I'm an admin. How can I mark this myself to indicate I've reviewed it myself, so the bot failure shouldn't be an issue? - Jmabel ! talk 16:05, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

  • Looks like FlickreviewR now sorted this out, but the general question still stands: is there any way I can mark these myself instead of leaving it for a bot? - Jmabel ! talk 16:46, 29 September 2015 (UTC)
@Jmabel: You can use LicenseReview or Flickrreview manually (replacing the bot template), or Rillke's script (User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js) to to give you a toolbox link... tho 'technically' you should not self-review, I think we can probably excuse you (lol). That was EXIF Orientation. It should be no longer an issue anymore --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 02:40, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Is there a way to view the images in all subcategories

Sorry for what seems like a simple question, but I can't find the answer. Is there a way to (pre)view all images in subcategories of a main category? I'm faced with categories that have multiple subcategories, and it's extremely annoying to have to go through all subcategories in order to get an overview of all pictures, hoping to find the one you're looking for. Thanks, --Midas02 (talk) 14:36, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

You can get a list of files from CatScan to a specified depth in the sub-cat trees; it can also do category intersections and apply various filters. The default output format is HTML, a table of links with some details, but there’s a Gallery option that will emit a page of wikitext, which you can then paste into a sandbox for previewing as a gallery of thumbnails.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:57, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, but that's messy to say the least. I was hoping there's a gadget which could do it. Where do you see the "Gallery option" by the way? All I find is a way to produce wikitext, but those contain the images in full. So previewing them in a sandbox results in full size images being loaded, rather than thumbnails. --Midas02 (talk) 00:24, 5 October 2015 (UTC)
It’s the last radio button in the “Format” section at the bottom of the full CatScan V3.0 page (not the “Quick Intersection“ version). It just produces a list of filenames between <gallery> … </gallery> tags, which should render as thumbnails in boxes. If for some reason you’re getting a ‘bare‘ filename list, I guess you’d have to add the tags manually. Unfortunately I don’t know of a more streamlined method. Note there is a Gadget that adds a CatScan menu item to category pages and fills in the name for you.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:09, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Help

Hi, I want to upload photo for Biographical article of non-living person on English Wikipedia Asaf Ali Asghar Fyzee. I have found photo of subject on Government website of India, website named photodivision.gov.in. They have given many photos of various people and there is option to "download" and "to print" the photo. So does these pics are free to upload? this one is the image that I want to upload. I am asking all this because I have nominated this article for DYK and I don't want any CopyVio in image. Can somebody help me in this issue? Thank you. --Human3015 (talk) 19:10, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

We can’t assume that a site’s providing download links implies any permission beyond personal use, so that alone is no evidence of the free licensing we require. I couldn‘t find a copyright page on the above site, but I note that they provide prints for a fee, and it seems that for at least some images they add a surcharge for commercial use, implying a limited licence. So we have to treat their photos on a case-by-case basis. Although the metadata for the image in question does not identify the photographer, the copyright field says it‘s public domain, so I think you’re in luck with this one: we generally trust the information provided by institutional curators. Be sure to upload the original file with its metadata, and since it’s an anonymous image dated “June [19]49“ I believe the appropriate licence tag will be PD-India-photo-1958.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 20:07, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
There is also an issue with the USA copyright. Ruslik (talk) 20:12, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
@Odysseus1479 and Ruslik0: Thanks both of you. I have some general questions. How to see metadata of such images? How you saw date and copyright situation of particular image? Also there is issue of USA copyright then should I upload it or not? --Human3015 (talk) 21:10, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I forgot about the US copyright, specifically the URAA. If the image is unpublished, it wouldn’t yet have been out of copyright in India as of 1996, so it gets an automatic 120 years of protection in the USA, meaning it won’t be free there until 2070. I’m afraid you’ll have to upload it directly to enWP under a fair-use rationale for non-free media. (Since the subject is deceased, it‘s unlikely a free alternative is available, so the photo should be fine there as long as it’s used in an article.) Unless you can find evidence that it was published in the US, without notice and before 1977 …
Regarding metadata, many image-editors and -viewers can access it; there are also special-purpose tools that don‘t require opening the image itself, and there are browser plug-ins to read it directly from files on the Web. Some only show EXIF data; others also handle IPTC, geocoding, and other kinds of tags. (I saw the PD entry in the Fyzee file using Adobe Photoshop; strangely, the other programs I’ve tried since, including the GIMP, Adobe Bridge, and a couple of metadata viewers, show the copyright-status field as blank or unknown but identify the owner as “Photo Division”. I have no idea why the difference.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:47, 4 October 2015 (UTC)

Depending on your user settings and what browser you use, the edit tab (not an icon) is usually near the top of the page on the right, between the "View" and "View history" tabs next to the search box.
There is currently no active mentoring programme on Commons. (There is a Commons:Mentoring page, but it looks like it was abandoned before it got started. We probably don't have the resources to run an effective mentoring programme.) LX (talk, contribs) 17:31, 5 October 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately not in a way that really enables others to provide help. Ainsleykg, please provide more context and information when asking questions, and please answer all follow-up questions. There aren't a lot of people tending to help desk questions. If you ignore responses and don't help us help you, some or all of us will eventually run out of patience and start ignoring your questions. You never answered the follow-up questions I asked at Commons:Help desk/Archive/2015/09#Editing Problem, so the question was archived without being resolved.
You seem to have similarly ignored this follow-up question above: Is it only the Edit tab that's missing, or are other tabs such as "View" and "View history" also missing?
How you relaunch your browser, clear its cache or restart your computer/tablet/phone/whatever depends on which browser and operating system you are using. Since you haven't mentioned any of that information, no one will be able to provide detailed instructions.

Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/

I messed up, and an Admin needs to correct it. In my first attempt to create a Featured Picture set, I accidentally saved Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/ with my information on it. Then I deleted that, and it left it blank. Well, one mistake and then another. The end result, is that when a user tries to create a Commons Picture set by clicking on the supplied blank under those instructions, the original information has been erased. My apologies for creating this mess. I later figured out how to create the set I was intending, but hope someone can correct my error on the process. Maile66 (talk) 15:20, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

The guideline on nude photos is the same regardless of the age of the subject. The age of the subject may, however, have legal implications, specifically with respect to consent requirements and when it comes to pornographic images. LX (talk, contribs) 16:54, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

Austauschen eines Logos

Hallo zusammen,

They will be deleted because they may not be uploaded to the Commons. They are copyrighted and have not been released under a free license. Ruslik (talk) 20:04, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

--Gowharwani313 (talk) 04:21, 8 October 2015 (UTC) I have made this file on computer using adobe photoshop, and photoscape after coping it from the source http://gdcbeerwah.net/notices/26.pdf Can it be deleted.

Every page of that PDF bears a copyright notice, and there‘s no reason to suppose the logo is exempt. Unless explicit permission can be obtained from the owner, or it can be shown that the logo is out of copyright (e.g. due to age), it can‘t be kept here. However, being used to illustrate the institution‘s article, it can most likely be uploaded to the English Wikipedia under a fair-use rationale. (Incidentally, I would suggest exporting it from your original Photoshop document as an indexed-colour PNG of about 330×300 pixels, for efficiency and to meet the requirement that non-free images be smaller than ~100 kpx.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 05:16, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

Contact Info / Permission To Use Photo

Hello,

I want to use the following photo for my album artwork- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Part_of_Miami_seafront,_circe_1971-1972.jpg

I know the Creative Commons license allows me to use this, but I still wanted to try and get in touch with the photographer to check exactly how he/she wants to be credited, etc. Unfortunately I can't seem to find any contact info as the users profile doesn't exist.

Is there any other way I can get in touch with him/her?

Thanks, Chris — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iamchrischu (talk • contribs) 01:13, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

I see you’ve found the uploader’s Talk page. (Not every registered account has a User page, but everyone who’s contributed—you included—will have a discussion page created by the welcoming bot.) Since the user is intermittently active here and may not see a message for a while, you may prefer to contact him or her by email: you should see an “Email this user” link under “Tools” in the sidebar on that page. (Note that this is not an internal message system: it will disclose your e-mail address to the recipient, and it won’t work if you’re using an email host that blocks messages sent via proxy; Yahoo! is one such.)—Odysseus1479 (talk) 01:51, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Adding photos on an article

Hi all,

I must add some photos to an article but I didn't take them, a friend took them so what is the process to get these files accepted in my article?

Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CyrilG4 (talk • contribs) 02:02, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

  1. Your friend could open an account and upload them as his/her own work (probably simplest).
  2. You could go through the process described at COM:OTRS for your friend to give the necessary release of rights, and you could upload them.
Feel free to ask further questions here if that's not clear. - Jmabel ! talk 02:30, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
(Edit conflict)The simplest way is for your friend to register an account here and upload the images as “own work“ under a suitable licence. But if that isn’t feasible, see COM:OTRS for detailed instructions; in short your friend should e-mail a consent letter (sample on that page), identifying him- or herself (confidentially) and agreeing to release the work under a free licence so that anyone can use it for any purpose. The images can be identified either by the filenames under which they‘re uploaded or by a carte blanche for your user account. If you upload the files before a ticket confirming the permission has been issued, be sure to use the same licence (and attribution) the photographer put in the consent letter, and tag them with OTRS pending so they won‘t be questioned while the request is being processed.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 02:32, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedia Commons,

Hi there, I got a logo for the French TV channel, Teletoon1. I am not sure what to do with the logo I uploaded 2 When I uploaded the logo, I got "The uploader did not provide sufficient information (a valid and suitable tag) on this media's copyright status'... I am also new to Wikimedia Commons. Can you tell me what to do?

Thanks, MenuRaj.

--MenuRaj (talk) 22:24, 17 October 2015 (UTC)

  • Is there a basis for this being in the public domain? Because otherwise, clearly you don't have the copyright-holder's permission, and it shouldn't be on Commons. I don't know the threshold of originality for a logo in France, and this would be close to the line for whether it is eligible for copyright. In any case, it is incumbent on the uploader (you in this case) to say what you believe the copyright status to be. If you believe (as I'm guessing you do, since you uploaded it) that is qualifies for PD-ineligible, then you need to tag it as such. - Jmabel ! talk
That's clearly not ineligible for copyright protection. MenuRaj probably doesn't believe anything about the copyright status and simply just skipped reading Commons:First steps/Contributing and uploaded the image without any understanding of what can and cannot be hosted on Commons. Wiki Loves Monuments 2015 Vorlage

Hallo,

--Magnus (talk) 06:29, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

Cat-a-lot and moving categories

I often want to move subcategories when using Cat-a-lot, so I click the "Allow categorising pages (including categories) that are not files" chunk of Preferences. This works fine when I select the one-time-only option, but whenever I select the "Publicly visible into your account" option, I get an error. Does anyone know how I'm supposed to activate this option? I've tried selecting this option in different browsers and changing my skin, but nothing works. I can't supply the error message, because it's always different: if I select this option twice in a row, without changing any settings, I get different error messages every time, even though my button clicks are just a few seconds apart. Wiki loves Africa

Dear all ǃ I'm happy to figure among the many but few privileged members of this community. I must admit that not many people in my environment are aware of this noble and challenging project. And I want to believe that much is left to be done, not only in terms of raising awareness, but also, in terms of content. This gives me a raison to participate in this year's Wiki Loves Africa, as there is much to be seen on Africa and its citizens. Permit me to ask few questionsː 1- How many images are allowed for the competition? 2- Can I post as many images as I want in relation with this year's theme? 3- When pictures are uploaded, is it possible to have them displaying? 4- What makes the "picture of the day"? What are the selection criteria?

Thanks for your collaboration, Irene. — Preceding unsigned comment added by IRENE GAOUDA (talk • contribs) 16:21, 15 October 2015 (UTC)

If you find that your questions are not answered by Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2015/FAQ, you should probably ask any questions specific to Wiki Love Africa at the Wiki Loves Africa help desk rather than here at the general help desk for Wikimedia Commons. Images containing copyrighted elements

Some images such as this one contain some copyrighted elements for which we can't apply de minimis. Looking into their description page, how many authors should exist there? The description page shows that the file has no problem and the OTRS team has addressed the ticket, should there be two licenses (one for the image and one for the painting) or one is enough? Thanks. Mhhossein (talk) 05:49, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

It depends on the situation, which author created what, what is licensed under what license, what is not licensed, etc. The description page should present clearly all the information to allow the reader to know exactly what the situation is and what license applies to what.
In my limited experience, situations like that on Commons fit mostly into one of these three types of possibilities:
A) The artwork itself is validly released under its own specified free license by its author, independently of the particular photo on Commons and of any other photo that may be made of it. In this type of situation, the optional template Photo of art may help format the description page. There are two authors and there may be two licenses.
B) The artwork is not under a free license, but its author has given explicit consent to the fact that a view of the artwork is included into a particular photo which is to be published under a specified free license by the photographer. In such cases, there are two authors (both contributed to what is included in the image) but there is only one license, which applies to that image.
C) The OTRS ticket does not contain a sufficient license or permission of the artist about the artwork and thus the OTRS template on the description page is misleading.
As you have noticed, the description pages are not always worded as clearly as one may wish. A description page formatted like the one in your link is not unusual and may often suggest a situation of type B (only this particular photograph is under the license, the artwork is not, but the artist consented to the publication of this particular photograph under the free license by the photographer), although a situation of type C (bad ticket) can't be ruled out. When the description page is not clear about what is what, you have to find a volunteer of OTRS and ask for precisions. You can try asking for details on the OTRS noticeboard. Or you can identify individual OTRS volunteers which, from your own experience, you trust are both competent and reasonably available, and ask them directly. (Finding ones that are available may prove very hard, especially for some languages.) Remember that you have a right to know exactly what the free license statement or permission says. A free license statement, or a statement of permission for use of a freely licensed image, is a public statement addressed by its author to the public.
Regarding specifically the file you linked in your question, I see that you were content with what was said in the related DR discussion. Well, I suppose it's good that it contented you, although I don't see anything clear there. IMO, it is still as ambiguous as it is on the description page, or even worse. The artist's statement, as reported in the DR page by the uploader, reads: "I hereby affirm that [I, [name of the artist], am] the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of [File:Nahem Shoa next to his Giant Portrait of Ben, Hartlepool Art Gallery.jpg]". Well, there are three problems wit that statement. 1) The only explicit report of the wording of the statement is hearsay by the uploader. But let's assume that the uploader reports accurately the statement of the artist. 2) Assuming the report is accurate, and according to that statement, the artist is saying that he is is the creator or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the file of the photograph. Which is in contradiction with the statement made on the description page by the uploader to be the author and the copyright owner of the image. 3) Most importantly, even if we assume that that statement of the artist is actually about his painting, and assuming that the uploader reported the statement in its entirety, a statement by someone merely saying that they are the creator and copyright owner of a work tells nothing at all about a license or a permission.
Now, in the DR discussion, just below the uploader's report, an OTRS volunteer added a short comment saying he thinks a permission is granted. That is ambiguous and doesn't really help. The volunteer doesn't correct the uploader's report, thus hinting that the uploader's report is correct and complete. But it leaves us guessing. Either the volunteer is implying that the uploader indeed reported in full the statement of the artist, in which case it's clearly not sufficient for OTRS validation, or the volunteer is implying that the uploader's report is incomplete and that the artist clearly specified a license or a permission, in which case it's probably fine but it should be made clear somewhere.
-- Asclepias (talk) 15:34, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you Asclepias for your comprehensive and valuable comment on this matter. To be honest, I'm still doubtful about the image and what concerns me most is that the pic is nominated to be shown in Wikipedia's DYK box. However, I think there should be something that User:Krd may add here to remove the doubts. Mhhossein (talk) 04:48, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
If my previous answer is not sufficient I'd suggest to ask for another review by a different OTRS member at the Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard. --Krd 07:10, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
@Asclepias: I agree in principle with your opinion that more clarity is desirable, however I also think one can use reasonable interpretation at times. Storkk (talk) 19:10, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
@Mhhossein: Could you please clarify your question? The situation as I see it for this specific ticket is Asclepias's B above, where the photographer has licensed the photo correctly, and the artist has consented to the license. Thus, the image you link to appears to me to be licensed correctly. If the question concerned whether the artwork itself is freely licensed, I believe that would require some more back and forth (notwithstanding Creative Commons's opinion). Pinging Jcb, owner of the ticket. Storkk (talk) 19:00, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Both the artist (=depicted person) and the photographer (=uploader) licensed this picture. Both permissions are stored in the mentioned ticket. (So situation B I think). Jcb (talk) 22:37, 15 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you. the point is clarified. Mhhossein (talk) 16:49, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Freedom of Panorama

Hello, I want to upload better pictures of the Burj Khalifa but I don't understand how Freedom of Panorama works in the United Arab Emirates. Here it says there's no freedom of panorama and it shows that pictures of the Burj Khalifa have been deleted. But why are there pictures in the category Burj Khalifa then? Is it possible to upload pictures of the Burj Khalifa to Commons or should those pictures in the category need to be deleted too? - Supercarwaartalk 11:01, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

@Supercarwaar: Without looking at them all in depth, it looks like most are interior photos. Also, it is possible for the inclusion of a copyrighted work of architecture to be de minimis if it's not the main subject of the image, and it's inclusion is unavoidable. There are also a few that, at a quick glance, should probably be deleted (File:Dubai Darafsh (155).jpg, for example). Revent (talk) 04:16, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

It should replace the PD-Art that’s there now, under the licence header. Jan van Eyck's ARNOFINI PORTRAIT

You list a high resolution image which I calculate based on the jpeg pixel size should give a file of 13 MB, but instead the file size is only about 2.3MB. The image seems very dark and I will have to take it into photoshop and lighten the exposure to view some of the details, such as the number of beads (29 instead of the normal 30) on the rosary. Is there a higher resolution image available? This is not meant to be an edit. Howard McPherson — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 50.109.202.146 (talk) 06:58, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

It would be a lot easier for everyone if you linked the image you're talking about. I guess you mean File:Van Eyck - Arnolfini Portrait.jpg. The source of the file is given: [10]. Maybe you should ask the National Gallery if they can provide a less compressed image. OTOH your calculation about the file size is somewhat flawed. --Magnus (talk) 07:35, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Libya 1941 maps request

I'm working on improvements to Operation Sonnenblume (1941) but am struggling with maps to illustrate the place names in the text, particularly as the names in the sources aren't necessarily the modern ones. I've been ploughing through Commons with every permutation of "map" and "Libya" I can think of and found a few which help but wonder if an aficionado can point me towards better examples. Regards Keith-264 (talk) 07:30, 20 October 2015 (UTC)

There's this map which has several locations on it. Is there a formula I can use to add more than one location to the Libya locator map template? Regards Keith-264 (talk) 08:18, 20 October 2015 (UTC)
I've found out how to add places to a location map, now I need a location map of Cyrenaica only, how do I do that?Keith-264 (talk) 16:56, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Problem uploading multiple files

The photos I upload are around 10MB in size. If I try to upload more than about six of them at the time, I have a problem that causes me to have to abort the whole process. It will upload all of the files and then it it will start processing the files. If there are more than about six files, it will not finish processing one of them - it shows spinning and never stops. For instance, I tried uploading 26 files about an hour ago. It processed 25 but would not process the 26th, so I had to close it out and start over. I tried uploading five and then adding five more. It processed nine, but would not finish processing the tenth one. I've had this problem before, probably every time I try to upload more than six or so files. What is the problem and can it be fixed? Bubba73 (talk) 06:09, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

I'm using just the usual "upload file" from the left column. Is there a better way? Bubba73 (talk) 15:42, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Below they mention a 100MB on uploads, so with 10 files of around 10MB each, I'm probably hitting that limit. Bubba73 (talk) 20:21, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Please help me, my Category problem

Please help me, the Category does not include the uploaded images; Category:Barangays of Balanga City, at this moment after more than 4 hours uploaded, more than 500 images, files do not appear or display in the Categories: Yesterday, almost all my uploaded images were fixed and the Categories included my images after some hours; but now, I have upladed many images, but not even 1 has been put into the categories: Category:Santo Cristo Parish Church (Cupang, Balanga City, Bataan); Category:Cupang North, Cupang Proper, Cupang West and Central, Balanga City, Bataan ; Category:Cataning, Balanga City, Bataan; Category:Poblacion, Balanga City, Bataan; Category:Bagumbayan, Balanga City, Bataan, even if I use this debug in uploading; please help me, thanks and best regards --Judgefloro (talk) --Judgefloro 18:18, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

I have the same problem. I have modified the category of multiple files, and 10 hours later the modifications do not show up when I open the Category:Barcelona. It is causing me many problems. Is someone working to fix it? --Jordiferrer (talk) 18:23, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Presumably someone is working to fix it. It's been repeatedly reported the last few days. Your images are going into the categories just fine; the issue (presumably a caching issue) is with category display. There's nothing anyone here on the help desk or village pump is going to be able to do, though, because it is a technical operations issue, not (say) a policy issue. - Jmabel ! talk 18:36, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks Jmabel. Is there any forum or chatroom where we can post or track the resolution of this technical issue? --Jordiferrer (talk) 20:36, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
No one place I'm aware of, though there may be one. I gather this particular problem is technically fixed, but the backlog is large enough that it will be a couple of days for things to catch up & get back to normal. - Jmabel ! talk 04:56, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
It seems it is solved. Previous files now display ok. And I just did a category modification, and the file was immediately displayed correctly. Thanks! --Jordiferrer (talk) 10:17, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
Thanks to thee, Jmabel ! talk and the Administrators, my Categories do now show the more than 500 images with blue links now in the Category: Barangays of Balanga City among other, sincerely, and best regards --Judgefloro (talk) --Judgefloro 14:25, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

File deletion & logs

When a file gets deleted on Commons, does it always get logged at Special:Log? --Djadjko (talk) 23:44, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Yes. Entries can, however, be removed from the log by oversighters, but that is extremely rare. LX (talk, contribs) 15:11, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
And so I guess this is an example... OK, thanks for helping newbies learning the Wiki policies. --Djadjko (talk) 21:33, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Upload error "Too Large"

When I try to upload file .djvu which size is 115Mb with Special:Upload I get the error "413 Request Entity Too Large". Although uploadpage says that permitted size to 1000Mb. How to upload this file? --Vladis13 (talk) 18:03, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Have you checked "Chunked uploads" in your preferences? If yes, it should work if you use the Upload Wizard. Otherwise the size limit is 100 MB. --Magnus (talk) 18:06, 22 October 2015 (UTC)
It's not right that in the Special:Upload written about the limit of 1000 MB, but its the real limit is 100...
I enabled in preferences the Wizard and "Chunked uploads", did upload via a wizard, but after it shows the next tab with error without buttons back or forward (screenshot). If press the "back" in browser, then will drop form and need be to reupload file, but will be the same error. Therefore this problem I not use the wizard from summer. Yesterday, other user also tried to upload the file, with the same erroneous result.
Found 2 issue on forum about the error "internal_api_error_MWException". What to do? --Vladis13 (talk) 19:51, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Move command don't work

I try to move picture File:Into Eternity -näytös 4.6.2010.jpg] to better name, but my move command don't change the name.--Motopark (talk) 13:15, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

@Motopark: Not sure why it would not have worked... you are a filemover, and the image is not protected. Perhaps you made a typo in the filename? (the link you posted here has an extra ] in it). I'd suggest you try adding the Rename template to the page manually, and then attempting to 'fufill the request' yourself, and see if that indicates what the issue is. Otherwise, just post the intended destination of the move here. Revent (talk) 17:34, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

How do I challenge a deletion request on an image I created and uploaded?

Hi,

Another user has submitted a deletion request for an image I created and uploaded. I can't figure out how to post my comments to challenge the deletion request.

Can someone help me?

Doug Varley. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Djvarley (talk • contribs) 04:11, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

Hi,

There is that one and a second one [Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flamborough-glanbrook.png]. When you look at the link provided, it shows: copied from url

As you can see, the URL provided contains ozgurcehaykir.com. When I clicked the link (without initially realizing what I was clicking). my browser gave me a warning that it was a dangerous page.

It appears that this person is challenging a lot of images in the hope that someone will click on the dangerous link (leading to viruses or whatever being installed on your computer).

How should this be handled?

Problem with Djvu

I uploaded new version File:Толковый словарь. Том 2(1) (Даль 1905).djvu (now returned last version) but Commons dont recognize it (screenshot). This is a normal file to which was added OCR and normal saved via Finereader, also the file normal opens in Djvu viewer (http://www.djvu.org/resources/ in 1st line). --Vladis13 (talk) 14:07, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

This is likely related to a known bug (large PDF/djvu files >100MB with large metadata >64K phabricator:T94562), for which a fix is planned to be deployed to Commons this coming Wednesday (i.e. October 28th). —RP88 (talk) 21:46, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Ok. Also, there another bug (Some DjVu files not being rendered in commons - showing up as "0 × 0 pixels", despite the file size in MB being nonzero phabricator:T107664). But there Priority is Low, so fix will not soon. --Vladis13 (talk) 22:19, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

"Back to the old form" as default

I find the old form of uploading images to Commons much easier than the Upload Wizard. Commons keeps giving me the Upload Wizard as default, only offering me "Back to the old form" as a back-up plan. Is there any way to reverse this, having the old form as default and the Upload Wizard as a back-up plan? JIP (talk) 20:13, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

Deselect "UploadWizard" (fourth item in the second section) on Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets and press Save. LX (talk, contribs) 21:30, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

I tried rotating this photo to make it upright but it didn't work. What is the problem here? Volcanoguy (talk) 18:21, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

Also: File:Tseax vent 2013A.jpeg. This and the image above need to be rotated to the left. Volcanoguy (talk) 19:13, 22 October 2015 (UTC)

It is marked for rotation. The bot will eventually get to it. - Jmabel ! talk 03:31, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

"Rotatebot" (the old one) is broken, and Steinsplitter's bot only handles these on an occasional basis (you can see it's last activity here, and it's been a couple of days). There is an server patch in progress to make this task done by the server instead of a bot. Revent (talk) 05:17, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
@Volcanoguy: ✓ Done manually. The image you tried to rotate yourself that didn't work was because the 'image rotation' was encoded in the EXIF data. (see http://www.daveperrett.com/articles/2012/07/28/exif-orientation-handling-is-a-ghetto/ for some commentary on such issues) The solution is to use an image editor like GIMP that strips such things, and instead gives the actual 'image file' the correct orientation. Revent (talk) 05:29, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
Please don't use tools that apply destructive JPEG compression on something that's already been compressed once; it will cause a buildup of artifacts. The first attempt at rotation also started with a much smaller preview, which is obviously not a good idea. The bots use utilities like exiftran, which only perform nondestructive matrix transformations on the existing data and set the EXIF rotation information correctly, with no need for another round of compression. That's what I used to do it manually as well. LX (talk, contribs) 11:18, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
Why was my cropping of File:Tseax vent 2013.jpeg reverted? Not that it's a big deal or anything I just find the darkness in the upper right corner unnecessary. Volcanoguy (talk) 13:26, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
Again, you started with a low-resolution preview of the original image that had been downscaled to less than 10% of the original size. Your version was 735 pixels "wide", while the original is 2,448 pixels wide. Any crops should always start with the full resolution version and preferably use lossless cropping. If the cropping is significant, it should be uploaded under a different name. LX (talk, contribs) 13:53, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
@LX: AFAIK, I didn't apply any extra compression (or at least, should not have). GIMP has an option to keep the original quality settings when re-exporting after editing, which I always keep checked, and both yours and mine show as having identical properties other than mine being slightly larger (I might have inadvertently embedded a thumbnail). Colorcube, histogram, etc are the same. Revent (talk) 15:15, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
Actually examining them in excruciating detail (using FotoForensics) because I wondered exactly why mine was larger, your version (and, presumably the original) use 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, while the version I uses 4:4:4 (which is actually 'no' subsampling, and so saved some extra unused bits). Also, my version embedded the ICC profile (didn't 'change' it, just added the one used in the original image) which makes the image a bit larger, but actually makes it display more consistently. The actual image itself is identical. Revent (talk) 15:24, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
I frequently use Gimp myself, so I'm quite familiar with it. The option to use the original quality setting just means that it will use the same "aggressiveness" when saving, which does in fact apply another round of lossy compression on previously compressed content. And that does have a cumulative effect, whether or not you can see it on the first iteration. Your version was 420KB larger than the original, which is not accounted for by differences in colour profiles, as the ICC profile you added is only 3.1KB in size. The fact that the chroma subsampling method changed should also be an obvious clue that another round of compression has taken place. Basically, you've taken an image with a high degree of subsampling compression and recompressed it with a lower degree of subsampling compression. While the second round of compression removes less information than the original compression, the original loss is still present, and the second compression removes an additional, different set of information, and then uses more bits to store the result. LX (talk, contribs) 16:47, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
AIUI the lossless rotation and cropping tools avoid ‘opening’ the image—i,e. expanding the JPEG code—but rather work around the edges, so to speak. OTOH I‘m not aware of any full-featured image-editor that doesn’t immediately convert files to its own format on opening them, so I agree that resaving as a JPEG, no matter how ‘gently’, will always incur additional damage. We should make a point of keeping originals available. so that creators of variants have the option of starting with the fewest possible artifacts. Should we have a template that says in effect This image may have accumulated damage from repeated lossy compression; the earliest available version is at [link] ? Ideally there should already be a trail of ‘breadcrumbs’ from modified versions, in the form of attribution & source links, other-version & extracted templates, and so on, but in practice it can‘t always be relied on.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 19:32, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
@LX: Having just now actually specifically tested (using a series of rotations, subtraction, and then looking at the threshold) I stand corrected. I was under the impression that GIMP was able to handle jpegs without introducing a generation loss as long as you did not change the compression level, but it indeed does not. Annoying, but good to know...I will avoid using it for that purpose in the future. Typically I don't anyhow, but the bot was down. I would disagree slightly with how you describe the effects of using 4 4 instead of 4 2 subsampling (using 4 4 is turning subsampling completely 'off', so it doesn't itself discard information, it actually just saves the same chroma information at twice the resolution) but it's rather beside the point.... it was still recompressed. "Invalid Designation" in the InfoBox for Ross Bay Villa

How do I get rid of "Invalid Designation" in the InfoBox for Ross Bay Villa, please? (It's wrong. The designation is totally valid.)

And how do I get rid of the "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" line which has popped up under my Infobox picture, please?

Otherwise, I'm ready to submit this Draft for use. But I can't figure out how: I'm looking for a "SUBMIT" button, or similar.

Thanks, Nick Russcomm (talk) 21:55, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

  • I'm guessing this is about en:Draft:Ross Bay Villa (on Wikipedia, not here on Commons). It says "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" because you wrote "image = ". If you want it to say something else, put something else there. If you want it to say nothing, change this to just "image = ".
  • To make the draft into a wikipedia page, you need to move it to the appropriate name (e.g. from Draft:Ross Bay Villa to Ross Bay Villa).
  • You'll have to ask on Wikipedia itself about the "Invalid Designation", but I'm guessing the problem is "designation1_number = Victoria Heritage Designation Bylaw No.405", since that text string is not a number. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

After upload of new version, the old version persists

Re file:

File:Helmholtz toonhoogtenotatie.png

I tried repeatedly to upload a replacing version, but after completion I still see the original version.

How can this be solved?

Vinkje83 (talk) 23:11, 27 October 2015 (UTC)

Sorry, everybody. The problem went away unexpectedly.
I suspected a caching problem, and tried ?action=purge several times. That didn't work.
Just now I typed simply control-R, and that made the old image make way for the new one.
Vinkje83 (talk) 23:16, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
@Vinkje83: If 'control-R' fixed it, it means that you were seeing a 'locally' (on your computer, or an intervening webcache) cached version of the image. Purging the page on Commons will rebuild the version of the page on Wikimedia's webserver, but won't force your browser to actually reload it. Ctrl-R instructs your browser to disregard any local caches, and instead load the page directly from the website. Revent (talk) 16:58, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Annoying categories

Annoying categories. There has been an annoying change in the Upload file menu. When I upload a picture and try to specify a category, there appears the message: "This category lacks a description page. Are you sure you typed the name correctly?". I try to answer "Yes" or "Y" or "Ja" or whatever, but the message doesn't respond. The only option then is to continue without specifying a category at all. Annoying, because I always categorise my pictures. Please remove this annoying message. Wikifrits (talk) 17:01, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

The message seems to be quite on point, actually. Looking at your previous upload, File:Goeree kunstwerk uitmijnende man.jpg, you added it to Category:JeanMarianne Bremers, but there is no such category on Commons. You should either create that category, or place your file in appropriate categories that actually exist. LX (talk, contribs) 17:08, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
Comment: In my opinion Category:JeanMarianne Bremers should not be created in that way as they are two people Jean Bremers and Marianne Bremers. --Achim (talk) 18:35, 10 October 2015 (UTC)
The error message could be improved. "There is no category with this name." or "This category does not exist." would be better than "This category lacks a description page." MKFI (talk) 07:33, 11 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for your reaction, LX. Yes, I know that the message is quite on point. What I don't like is that I cannot input a correct category only because it doesn't exist. Now I'm forced to break up the upload and create the new category first. Why can't I answer the question: "Are you sure you typed the name correctly?" with a "yes" and then go on with the upload? Yes, they are two people but they present themselves as artistduo jeanmariannebremers. Wikifrits (talk) 14:20, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Upload a set of files in Special:upload

Is there a way to select a set of files to upload in Special:upload? (I know there is in the Upload Wizard, but what about the special upload?) Bubba73 (talk) 00:23, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Short answer? No. Sorry, it would be rather nice if there was... there are 'off the wiki' COM:Upload tools that can make things more convenient, however. Revent (talk) 04:11, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
That is a shame, since the upload wizard allows you to select a group of files. I uploaded a batch of 11 today, and it took about 1 minute per file, although my internet connection can upload them in about 1 second each. I'll check out the upload tools. Bubba73 (talk) 04:16, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

I looked at the alternatives and decided to try Vicuna. It is better than the upload wizard or the special:upload, but it has some problems. The main problem in special:upload is that you can't select a group of files. You have to select one, wait for it to upload (about a minute in my case), then select the next one. Vicuna is generally better, but it has some problems. One is that once you have selected a group of photos to upload, you have to check each one individually - obviously if you have already selected the set, you intend to upload them all. Worse, though, is that if you make a mistake copying the info from one photo to the next, you can't fix it - once you copy, it is locked out. I got several done, then made a mistake and had to start all over. But then it did upload 20 photos in 6-8 minutes, and I didn't have to do anything once that started.

Uploading to Commons is extremely slow with either method - I can upload the file elsewhere in 1-2 seconds, whereas it takes 20-60 seconds per photo to Commons. Bubba73 (talk) 23:27, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

If you are able to run it, it is possible to use pywikipediabot to upload directly to Commons through the API, which is quite fast, but it's definitely not a 'user-friendly' method. (I'm not referring to using it as an actual 'bot', but merely as an upload tool) These maps (Category:ONCs uploaded by Revent), which are 'somewhat' large files (and a project I need to finish) were mostly uploaded by that method.
