SuckTarzan Contributions

I don't understand why all of my submitted contributions have been deleted? I have looked at other submissions which were in categories that my material was placed and my material appears to be right in line with what has been previously submitted. Please help me understand what I did wrong so that my future submissions can be deemed worthy.

See at the deletion requests' discussion - maybe this helps: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Condomsex.jpg and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Wide Leather Cock Ring & Condom Sex.jpg. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:46, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
I'd appreciate some clarification here. Re. Commons:Deletion requests/File:Condomsex.jpg, apart from the nominator UAltmann (talk · contribs) and their sock !votes, there are 3 keeps and one delete !vote. The nominator reasoning re. 18 U.S.C. § 2257 was not, apparently, the reason for deletion - if it was, this would require summary deletion of thousands of images. The delete reason given was "Speedy deleted per COM:SCOPE and COM:NUDE". The former states that "Files [...] which are not lawful for Commons to host on its servers in Florida will be deleted immediately upon being identified as illegal" - is that the applicable section? The latter says, "the files may be nominated for deletion (not speedy deleted)".
Please note, I am not advocating a review of the deletion, merely seeking a clarification. Thanks,  Chzz  ►  16:27, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
I would definitely ask the closing admin what the thinking was; the listed policy pages are mentioned without reference to how they apply to that particular image. Powers (talk) 02:07, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

I can't upload to commons

I keep trying to upload my image but it keeps flashing a red box saying "You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license." and I have done all that and writted everything needed but it completely refuses to upload. Please help me to sort out this disgraceful problem as it is stopping me from helping with everything and making me sick. Ta. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gorginagoog (talk • contribs) 22:27, 2010-04-30 (UTC)

Since you successfully uploaded File:Manchester main.png, it seems to work now. But you have not chosen a license in th upload form. Please add a license tag (for example {{cc-by-3.0}} if you only wish to have your name quoted if someone uses your image) to the description page if you wish to freely license your images (see Commons:Licensing). Have you shot all this images by yourself? Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:54, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Source Field for Uploaded Photo

All,

I am trying to upload a photo to a Wiki page that I took. I have selected "It is entirely my work". I am the owner of the photo and I am having a problem with the "Source:" field. The ? gives me the follow "This should be already pre-filled with text indicating that this is your work. If not, enter "Own work"." It has put in "Own work". What syntax do I use for this field to represent that it is a photo that I took and I own. I just need the format as nothing I enter is being accepted.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MTW65 (talk • contribs) 01:40, 1. Mai 2010 (UTC)

Do you mean the image File:Chely Wright Broadway.jpg? Everything's fine there. Have you really taken the picture by yourself? --Saibo (Δ) 17:17, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
For the record "own work" means "your own work", not "who owns the work?" =) Powers (talk) 02:04, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Public domain vs Creative Commons by-nc 2.0

An image is several hundred years old in a book and so in the public domain but it appears with a Creative Commons by-nc 2.0. There is no specific statement in the FAQ that the public domain overrides other claimed copyright restrictions. The particular cases I have in mind are images needed to illustrate Thomas Greenhill (surgeon).

--LittleHow (talk) 09:26, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

My point of view: If the author of the works is dead more than 70 years they are PD. CC-by-nc is claimed, but invalid. You can use the works as PD. If somebody alters these old works in a way that itself has en:Threshold of originality this alteration wouldn't be PD anymore and a granted CC license has to be respected. --Saibo (Δ) 17:07, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
So just put them into wikimedia commons by treating them as my own works and selecting a PD status? I am not entirely clear how to proceed--LittleHow (talk) 22:41, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
Use one of the templates under Commons:Image copyright tags#General such as {{PD-old}}. --Teratornis (talk) 23:43, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Your first link: "Line engraving by J. Nutting, 1705" He's surely dead more than 70 year. So put him as author, source this URL, and as license tag select PD-Old or have a look at my uploaded file's description. I uploaded one image for you. Should be okay: File:Thomas Greenhill.png. Other users here: please check. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 23:56, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

I uploaded the wrong image

When I uploaded the image here, I accidentally uploaded the wrong image. I fixed it up, but now there's a picture of the scanned page of a book in the file history. Is this a problem? Should it be deleted and then re-uploaded? Thanks.Lear's Fool (talk) 06:30, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Not really a problem. But to do a tiny bit of clean up, I deleted the first version. By the way, I enjoyed your username. :-) Killiondude (talk) 07:09, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Deletion requests transclusion problem

The page Commons:Deletion_requests/2010/04 stops abruptly after 13 April, and does not transclude the other days. I've tried a few things, and can't see the error. I tried transcluding 13th and 14th in User:Chzz/test2 and it works fine.  Chzz  ►  14:24, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Transclusion limit? –Juliancolton | Talk 14:46, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, in the html code you can see:
<!--
NewPP limit report
Preprocessor node count: 30428/1000000
Post-expand include size: 2048000/2048000 bytes
Template argument size: 31580/2048000 bytes
Expensive parser function count: 35/500
-->
If either of these sizes is close to the limit, then it is likely that some templates have not been expanded. [1] --GaAs11671 11:57, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
The DR system has been quite overloaded for awhile now. I should hope that one day when there are more active users (and so less backlogs and stuff) there could be another way to handle deletion requests. But that's a little too heavy of a topic for the help desk. :-) Killiondude (talk) 07:37, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Luftwaffe

I'm having considerable difficulty in understanding the PD-BW template. Does it mean that any pictures from the Bundeswehr can be uploaded? I was particularly interested in the photos from this page, as indeed any from the Luftwaffe. Are they in the public domain? Jared Preston (talk) 14:57, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

If you don't get an answer here, someone might know on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. In general, if an organization such as the Luftwaffe puts its works in the public domain, the organization itself will clearly state so, and our license templates should link to such definitive statements of copyright policy. If the {{PD-BW}} template is not clear, then we need someone to edit the template's description so it is clear. See Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle - basically, we take what is plainly free, and ignore what is not. If you cannot tell by looking on the Luftwaffe site(s) for pages that document their copyright status, you might need to contact someone at the Luftwaffe who can clarify this. See: COM:EIC#Permreq for instructions on requesting permission from copyright holders. --Teratornis (talk) 21:24, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
And the template says it's only for "Zentrale Dienstvorschrift". Have a look at the linked pages of the template, you'll see the type of images which are currently licensed that way: things like that . --GaAs11671 08:15, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Why can't I overwrite a file I've just uploaded

with a better-cropped image using the same file-name?

I did follow the instructions, and there seems just to appear a no-move screen & I get the same upload interface as if it won't accept my recent material still. Why is it?

Thank you /Orrling (talk) 23:40, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Providing no details - such as the name of the file - makes this question hard to answer. Your account is more than old enough to be autoconfirmed, so that cannot be the problem. You could upload your better image to another filename, tell us both filenames, and then other users could try uploading your new image over your old image. If there is a problem that prevents this for all users, then we could see the problem you are talking about. --Teratornis (talk) 21:27, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi. The filename is Menashe Noy.jpg.
2 seconds after uploading it I realized I could have it slightly better cut. Should I now retake it under a different name, or could you (or someone) delete first the original image so the proper file-name could be reused - as overwriting doesn't succeed?
What is Autoconfirmed? Thanks a lot. /Orrling (talk) 02:46, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

.tif-files do not open

hello, mostly I use to upload my pictures as .jpg-files. this time I did it as .tif and it does not show. why?? you may correct it, please, in the lemma de:Ingo Pini of the german wikipedia. thank you for helping.--Wodiga (talk) 17:16, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

TIFF files do not show thumbnails at this time, unfortunately. When you open it up, it shows quite nicely, but if you need something for Wikipedia, you're going to have to upload it as JPEG.--Prosfilaes (talk) 17:24, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
You can also see COM:FT#TIFF about this. Killiondude (talk) 07:36, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
You also have the option to upload it as a png file. With a png file you can also save it as lossles 24bit color (just like tif). Actually your images would be excelent saved as lossles files. I did a png example with one of you tif images here. Amada44 (talk) 06:16, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

scanned text from a book from 1873

In an early swedish encyklopedia (20 books). In a book from 1873, I red a funny but rather true future-fear for the City of Berlin wih I wold like to add in swedish wikipedia. There is no picture, just text. And the article-writer can hardly lived 70 years ago - in 1940. 67 years after the article was written. Is this free to upload ? Berlin suffered a bit during WW1 and a lot during the nazis and WW2 - and for 40 years after that aswell. The writer is concerned about people drinking , low Sundat chuch-visits and so on, in the end of the article. And adds "It's hard to not think that this will mean big touble for the city in the future" (Last word in article) Please help me. Is it alouded to be uploaded ? And if so, wich licence should I use ?

If the author was Shigechiyo Izumi... No, I'm joking, it should be OK. --GaAs11671 10:14, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
For the licence, public domain author dead since 70 years. --GaAs11671 16:36, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
I would think that would depend on Swedish Wikipedia rules. There are a number of 1885 publications by George Bernard Shaw that will under copyright in Europe until 2020. The article writer, if they were 20 at the time, would have only had to live 87; even if we assume 35, that's only to 102, which is rare, but not unheard of. What's old enough is very disputable in a life+n system. Furthermore, what type of verification have you done on the identity of this person--is the article signed, even if by initials, and have you looked them up?--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:30, 4 May 2010 (UTC)
  • If the author is unknown (you have to "prove" it), use {{PD-anon-70}}.
  • Prosfilaes, I'd say it is very improbable that an author of encyclopedia in XIXth century be 20.

SVG to PNG conversion problem

I have uploaded three svg files and have managed to overcome a number of conversion problems but I need some help with one. This file has a horizontal line of dashes which is rendered in svg but does not appear in the png conversion. There is a similar line near the top which is OK but in the legend a short line is missing. The other files also have this problem. Any suggestions? Bill Oversixty (talk) 10:06, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Those dashes are just there to show that the background is transparent. That is actually good! If you dont like that, you can open it with the program you made the svg and put a white layer below the text/drawings. Hope it helped. Amada44 (talk) 14:43, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Sorry but I believe you have misunderstood. If you open the svg file in a suitable browser you will see that there are several lines of dashes which represent illegitimate children. Some of these disappear in the conversion to png and this is the problem I need some help with. I have no problem with what you describe.Bill Oversixty (talk) 14:53, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I missunderstood that. The thing is, I belive that I can't see your problem ;-) Would you make a screenshoot of it? Because as far as I can see it renders fine! Amada44 (talk) 15:50, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I have made a composite screen shot of the relevant portions of the svg file and the png file. I do not have any public place to post it, so do I post here? Bill Oversixty (talk) 17:44, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
yes, we can delete it afterwards. Amada44 (talk) 17:57, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
This is it. The lower section shows that the line of dashes is missing after conversion to png. This must be a problem with the conversion program as I have just converted the svg file with Apache Batik rasterizer with no problem.Bill Oversixty (talk) 08:45, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
Okay, that helped. I opend the image in Inkscape and saved it as normal svg. It seems to render fine now. can you give it a check? (you may need to refresh/delete you browser cache) Amada44 (talk) 09:46, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
I am surprised that it worked using Inkscape because I have had numerous problems and do not use it. As far as I can tell it has put all the style into the elements. I will look at my own code again and see if I can do a similar workaround. Thanks for your help.Bill Oversixty (talk) 10:16, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
its my pleasure. Feel free to contact me on my talkpage if there is anything more I can do. PS. nice work you are doing!!! Amada44 (talk) 10:20, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
@Bill Oversixty If you could put a description of what it is (Scalable Vector Graphics replacement for File:England-NormandsPlantagenets-1.png is not a description, it is the source). Thanks. --GaAs11671 11:47, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
I am restyling the files to overcome this conversion issue. As soon as I upload the new versions I will look at the categories. Thanks for your interest.Bill Oversixty (talk) 16:00, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
I can look to the categorisation just now, if only I undertand what it id about . --GaAs11671 16:46, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

A phpoto of an art object from my personal collection

I want to upload photos of paintings from famous Bulgarian artists. The paintings are my personal property - I've bought them through the years. How should I proceed with the license issue? Who is the owner of the publication I - the owner and photographer of the object, or the artist of the object. What is the date of creation - the creation date of the object, or the date of the photo? user:Edal

The painter is always the primary author and copyrigth owner. For your authorship, it depends: if it's a flat 2D view, similar to a scan, you are not considered to have created an artwork. If it's taken withsome "3D", other things around the painting, etc., it's a derivative work. --GaAs11671 22:58, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
If you can contact the painters, the only way is to ask them if they would accept to release some samples of their paintings (those you have bought) under a free license, and if yes that they send an email through Commons:OTRS system (read the page). --GaAs11671 07:54, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

How can I ask for a verification of a plant image ID?

I corrected the IDs of a few obviously misnamed plant images as well as most of the pages that used them. There are, however, some images, which might be correctly named, but which look very suspicious to me. Some of them are used in several Wikis. Reassigning them to a category of undetermined images might be a problematic step when I am not sure about a misidentification. Asking the author on his talk page will not help much in most cases. Is there some kind of forum where experts check these images or is it possible to contact a botanist in charge of correcting erroneous IDs? Uploading Adobe Illustrator Screenshot

Today I was trying to upload an adobe illustrator screenshot(File:Illustrator_CS5_Windows7_64bit.jpg) of the new cs5 family. I keep on trying to get the licensing right, but the screenshot always gets deleted. Could anyone tell me how I should license such a screenshot for wikipedia?

You cannot upload a screenshot here, because that is a copyrighted, non-free image. You can only upload such images on the English Wikipedia (if it meets their strict fair use guidelines). I answered you on the media copyright question desk over there in more detail. -Andrew c (talk) 17:18, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Where is my image?

I am a complete wikimedia novice, but am eager to learn. So I uploaded a test image onto wikimedia earlier today to see how the process works. The upload was successful and I was able to use the image in a few test articles in the wikipedia sandbox, but I am now unable to find the image. The image was clearly marked as a test, but I assume it was deleted. Where does one go to view images you have uploaded? How does one edit or delete images? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. --Jana van Wyk (talk) 14:16, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

You can see all of your uploads at http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=upload&user=Jana+van+Wyk&page=&year=&month=-1&tagfilter=&hide_patrol_log=1. As you can see there, your one upload is a red link which means it has been deleted. To see the deletion reason, you can go to http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=delete&user=&page=File%3AWikinoobtest.jpg&year=&month=-1&tagfilter=&hide_patrol_log=1. To edit an image, you can open it up and then click the "edit" tab or link. You will not be able to delete an image, but you can request that an image be deleted by following instructions at COM:DR. Wknight94 talk 14:31, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
The more you tell us about exactly what you want to do, the better advice we can give. It is not entirely correct to refer to "the" process. Each user approaches Wikimedia Commons in their own individual way, depending on what sort of files they want to upload, and how they want to use them and make them usable by others. See the links on your user talk page for general information that covers the multitude of possible cases. Especially read Commons:First steps. However, you might need many hours of study to sift out the instructions that will apply to your particular goals. We can focus your study if you tell us more about the files you want to upload, for example:
  • What subjects or objects do your files depict or illustrate?
  • Who created your files? In what country or countries did they create them?
  • When were your files created? (Sufficiently old images and published documents automatically enter the public domain and are thus OK to upload to Commons.)
  • If you created your own files, do they meet the threshold of originality? Commons:Image casebook discusses some of the possibilities.
  • If you did not create your own files, where did you get them?
  • If you did not create your own files, or all the content in them, you may not own the copyright to them. In that event, do you have permission from the copyright owners to redistribute their files as free content?
In any case, I would not say you are a complete Wikimedia novice, because you know how to sign your posts. --Teratornis (talk) 17:39, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Novice With a Question

I uploaded this file but I keep on getting a message saying that it doesn't have the appropriate permission. So what is the appropriate permission?Nbahn (talk) 22:01, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Images on Commons must be free to reuse by everyone for any purpose including modification and commercial reuse, anywhere, not only in Wikipedia or Wikimedia projects - see Commons:Project scope#required licensing terms. That requires written consent from the legal owner, the copyright holder. The copyright holder must voluntarily agree in written form to a free license allowing for such reuse, the license is indicated with a copyright tag on the image description, the written permission should be forwarded to the confident COM:OTRS rather than writing it on the image description page. --Martin H. (talk) 22:09, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
See COM:EIC#Permreq for pages that give examples of how to request permission correctly. --Teratornis (talk) 22:20, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
I read of some weeks the OTRS team needs currently - but I'm not sure.
The permission given (see image description page) "use the two images in the Wikipedia article" is not sufficient to upload this image here. The author needs to licence them with a free license: for example under Template:Cc-by-3.0 (see there). This must include use by everyone in the world - not only in the wikipedia. This also must include commercial use of the images by everyone. --Saibo (Δ) 22:59, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
  • I contacted a photo archivist at the Detroit Public Library and she stated that it would be a number of days before she could evaluate the licenses. Is there anything that I can do to the file page to indicate that a decision is pending? ——Nbahn (talk) 19:40, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, add {{subst:opd}} to the permission field to indicate that. Its designed to indicate if a permission is already forwarded to OTRS, but if you think a permission is likely to come you may use it in this case too. --Martin H. (talk) 19:59, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

proper license

i own most of the artwork which was made by a friend of mine who died

25 years ago. > may i upload fotos i took of this work to the commons area ? > which license is appropriate? > there are no other living heirs to this estate. > thank-you, pliny13

Owning a work of art itself is not the same as owning the copyright. See Commons:Image casebook#Art (copies of). See the links under the "Public domain" heading under COM:EIC#Copyright to determine whether these art works are in the public domain. That seems doubtful because most nations' copyright durations are life of the author plus 50 years at least. If the author is no longer living it will be difficult to get the author's permission now. If you commissioned the works and paid for them, they may qualify as works for hire, making you the copyright owner, and thus able to license them freely if you wish, but you might need an attorney to figure that out. --Teratornis (talk) 00:47, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
It may not be hard to get the permission of the author's heirs, however, who would own the copyright.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:53, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Deleting a file because I'm being stalked

Dear Wikicommons,

I would like the following file COMPLETELY deleted, which still displays the thumbnail photo when doing a Google image search for me

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christine_Drakenhall.jpg

If this whole sequence is deleted, I'm assuming the thumbnail photo will disappear from the image search. No one seems to be able to delete it. I have a stalker who repeatedly harasses me because of this photo. Thank you.

Here's the thing; we're not Google. There's absolutely nothing we can about thumbnails that are turning up on Google; they aren't coming from here. You'll have to take it up with them, or wait for them to fix their caches.--Prosfilaes (talk) 21:28, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

The following image File:R12 IRT 3.gif isn't showing up in the article it's intended for. Can anybody fix this? ----DanTD (talk) 04:15, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

It seems that MediaWiki identifies it as a php rather than a gif file and thus refuses to display it.
It might work if you re-upload it in a slightly edited form. -- User:Docu at 11:52, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Done, and I replaced the image on the 3 (New York City Subway service) page. The trouble is, my restoration isn't showing up in my contributor's history, or the history of the article. ----DanTD (talk) 15:28, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
It appears at Special:Contributions/DanTD and File:R12_IRT_3.gif#filehistory (and en:File:R12_IRT_3.gif#filehistory). Once the cache is purged, the new image should be visible in the articles. -- User:Docu at 15:43, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

putting an image on its feet

sometimes i upload a photo and it ends up sideways (because that's the way i took it). even though i make sure to file the picture in an upright position, on commons it ends up sideways again. how can i change this? can i turn the picture after it's on commons? what can i do to avoid this problem?Sundar1 (talk) 11:56, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Sundar
It is quite easy to turn an image. Go to the image you want to turn and hit the edit button. Then you add the command: {{rotate|90}}. (you can use either 90, 180 or 270 degrees) The image will be turned the next day so you can sit back and... wait. I did an example with one of your images here: File:SpeyerCathedralAfraChapel2.JPG. The reason why this happens is, that there are different ways of how one can turn an image. Either one turns the real physical image, or its written into the EXIF that the image should be viewed by turning it clockwise. The problem is, that not all programs react the same. some only use the physical image rotation, some use the EXIF and some both.--Amada44 (talk) 12:35, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
For the second question: see also Commons:FAQ#How_do_I_fix_the_orientation_of_an_image.3F. -- User:Docu at 12:39, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

The following is in regards to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Polls_Nov08-Jan10.png

I'm trying to do my best to update the image. I originally created in Wikipedia. However, somehow it was moved to this thing called "the commons". I have no idea or appriciation for what this "commons" is, but I joined it anyway in the hopes of updating the poll graph. I did all the work in excel, but when I tried to upload it, the commons told me I'm "too new" a member to update the file.

Upon my second attempt, I found I was being told "You must give the original source of the file, the author of the work, and a license.", and further threatened "If you do not provide suitable license and source information, your upload will be deleted without further notice." I tried to discover what this commons licensing entails, but could not come to anything resembling an answer.

Why the hell can't I just pull up the file THAT I CREATED and hit one button to upload/update the file?! These barriers make me want to cease to contribute. I am barely managing my frustration long enough to enter this enquiry. Please, PLEASE advise. --Bob Traver (talk) 16:51, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

(1) Commons is the shared file respository of >700 Wikimedia projects, one of them is en.wp as one of 250 language versions of Wikipedia. (2) You can upload images over old versions 4 days after account creation. (3) to read about uploading see the instructions in Commons:First steps or the Commons:Upload page. In short: Every file must have an author, a source (if own work: own work, see COM:EI) and the file must, if not public domain due to copyright expiration, be licensed under free license granted voluntarily by the copyright holder allowing for free reuse by anyone, anywhere for every purpose including modification and commercial reuse, see en:free content. Uploading a file that you created yourself would take you one minute in Commons:Upload, the bariers are minimum. If you want to update a graph please wait 4 days to not create redundant versions. --Martin H. (talk) 17:07, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Correct license?

I have recently uploaded the image File:Dena DeRose 2009.jpg, an image I obtained from Flickr. I have an email from the owner, with permission to use the image. I have forwarded that to OTRS, so that bit's pending, but I'm concerned by the license I have selected on the page. He has released the image under the GNU Free Documentation License, and I wasn't sue which license from the drop-down menu applies. I've used {{Attribution}} & would be grateful if someone could take a look and advise as to whether this is the correct one to use. Thanks, --Belovedfreak (talk) 22:26, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

The correct license template would be {{GFDL|migration=not-eligible}} (the "migration=not-eligible" parameter means that the file is not eligible for relicensing under Creative Commons). There is a far greater variety of licenses than what the drop-down menu shows; if what you need is not in the menu, you need to edit the image description manually and add the correct template. — Tetromino (talk) 23:06, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Help with SVG file being displayed incorrectly

I just uploaded File:Magha-chakrabandha-devanagari.svg and File:Magha-chakrabandha-iast.svg, both of which look like a total mess. When I click on the svg files and have my browser render them, they appear fine. I have read Commons:FAQ and Help:SVG but can't find the reason. (Possibly librsvg differs from Firefox and Google Chrome's rendering?) I'm new to SVG, and I generated these SVG files by hand (with a little Python script), so it's possible I'm missing something fundamental. Of course, I can convert them to PNG on my computer and upload the image files, but isn't SVG supposed to be the better format? Thanks for any help, (Should I have asked this question at Commons:Graphics village pump instead?) Shreevatsa (talk) 02:49, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

95% of MediaWiki's problems rendering svgs have to do with text. The fail safe way to fix most of the problems is converting all the text to path. Know that this is definitely not preferred for every svg because it makes the text uneditable and can add a lot to the file size but I have done it to your two files and they appear to be rendering correctly. --Yarnalgo (talk) 04:29, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you. So it was a librsvg bug, and nothing wrong with the SVG file? (I just checked on the W3C validator that it appears to be ok, though of course the validator cannot detect all errors.) I thought the whole point of SVG was to have images easily editable, but if one has to convert text to path, it seems to defeat the purpose. Oh well. Thanks again for fixing the error, and explaining the issue! Shreevatsa (talk) 04:49, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
With some effort, I was able to narrow down the rendering bug: apparently librsvg, the rendering engine used by Mediawiki, interprets font-size="130%" as equivalent to font-size="130pt". I have reported it as Bug 618838 on Bugzilla; let's see if any librsvg developers exist who can fix this. Meanwhile, it would be good to have here, on Mediawiki, some list of common issues like this. I changed the svg to not use % sizes, and it now is rendered correctly without converting text to path. Shreevatsa (talk) 06:18, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I strongly doubt that http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GabyAna6x01DH.jpg is properly tagged wrt/ its license, as the author is "abc". I'm guessing that this is a non-free image. Would somebody please take a look? -- 78.43.60.58 16:55, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Adding a pic from my Facebook profile

I was going to upload an image showing a street sign in Quezon City, Philippines from my Facebook profile, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the copyright (I have the original pic, which still has its EXIF data]. How can I upload the said image? -Ianlopez1115 (talk) 13:15, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

By the way, I'm the one who took the image in question. -Ianlopez1115 (talk) 13:20, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
If you created the image, and it meets the threshold of originality in your jurisdiction, then you own the copyright and you can choose any free license suitable for Commons. See COM:L. If the street sign in the image is a copyrighted work, and you did not create the street sign, then your image might not meet the threshold of originality. See Commons:Derivative works, Commons:De minimis, Commons:Freedom of panorama, and Commons:Image casebook. Incidentally, if you want to link to your Facebook profile from your Commons user page, you can copy a user box such as User:Dan0 00/Userboxes/Facebook. --Teratornis (talk) 21:48, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
The Philippines has no provisions on Freedom of Panorama and/or the Threshold of originality (I think), but the image in question (found at http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30484953&l=071fbe3639&id=1109403178) follows De minimis (more or less) due to the number of signboards at the background. -Ianlopez1115 (talk) 05:56, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
That looks acceptably de minimis to me (although I am not a lawyer). You can upload the image and license it with {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} or {{PD-user}}, depending on whether you want to retain some rights. If you know the camera location, you can add the coordinates to the image page with the {{Location}} template, which will make the image available on Google Maps and other map sites that scrape images from Commons. If you used a geocoding camera, the coordinates should be in the EXIF data, and a bot program on Commons might eventually put them into a {{Location}} template automatically. --Teratornis (talk) 05:20, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Thank you. (please keep the URL intact for documentation purposes) -Ianlopez1115 (talk) 12:11, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

How to upload a new version of existing file

Hi, I'm new to commons but quite experienced at Wikipedia. I've made a few improvements to File:Streetmap of Adelaide and North Adelaide.svg, but there doesn't seem to be a link to "upload new version" on its page. I only signed up a day or so ago, is there some minimum account age for uploading files or something? Otherwise what to do? --Yeti Hunter (talk) 11:58, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Commons:Autoconfirmed users. It would be nice if the user interface made this obvious to Wikipedia users who are just signing up or merging their accounts to Commons. Instead of displaying no upload new version link, and (presumably) no explanation, in its place the software should display how long you have to wait to get this link. --Teratornis (talk) 00:31, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

File not showing right

I've uploaded File:Reflectional transformation.svg but it isn't right. Is it a problem with IE or did I do something wrong? Kayau (talk) 13:20, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Not working in chrome either. Perhaps I'll try uploading it again... Kayau (talk) 13:23, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
No, still not working. Kayau (talk) 13:25, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

The problem is that your svg file references a png file on your local hard drive. The Commons server cannot read your "C:\Documents and Settings\lai ka yau\My Documents\My Pictures\Wikis\grid.png" file and so fails to render the image. There is a way to properly embed raster images in Inkscape documents. However, please don't do it. Png in embedded in svg, even if done correctly, will look horrible when scaled. — Tetromino (talk) 02:15, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
But I desperately need an image for Wikibooks, at wikibooks:Geometry for Elementary School/Transformation. Is there another way I could solve this problem? Kayau (talk) 09:41, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
I guess I'll just have to start working on coordinates first. Wait a moment, I'll also need the grid for that. Oh, darn. Kayau (talk) 09:43, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
I don't understand why you would want to use a png file for a grid. Wouldn't it be simpler to draw the grid in Inkscape as svg? — Tetromino (talk) 10:32, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
I'll admit it, I'm just lazy. The grid is a public domain file I found found in commons. :) I'll try to make a new one with a home-made grid. Kayau (talk) 13:38, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

User improperly claiming ownership of images

I'm unsure of the best place to address this issue, so I'll bring it here. User:TxStateFAN has uploaded several images and has claimed ownership of them. A number of these images are taken from the website of Texas State University and from the university's "PhotoBank". The PhotoBank is only accessible from on-campus, so I'm unable to provide links to them. I've contacted the department at the university to determine what their opinion is on the issue as well as clarifying what copyrights exist on the images. I've raised the issue several times with TxStateFan here and at Wikipedia, but the user persists in claiming ownership of these images. What is the next step to take and where is the appropriate place to take it? Thanks for your help. --TreyGeek (talk) 02:18, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

I think best way to add {{Copyvio}} to each of images. Or request mass deletion on Commons:Deletion requests. If user continue such actions you could report on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:49, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Since I can't provide a link to the original image (at least not one that someone from off-campus can access) I wanted to make sure that there wasn't something else I should do. Thanks for the link to the noticeboard, hadn't been able to find it yet. --TreyGeek (talk) 16:09, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Photos of presidents

I have a question about something, why if i'm uploading photos of presidents i'm broking the rules of authors if those persons are public persons of any place in this world, they are part of the history of my country and the photos of they are public.

Saludos,

Saljos

Because you say, that YOU are the photographer. See File:M. O. Hammond self-portrait ca 1910.jpg or File:Abraham Lincoln head on shoulders photo portrait.jpg or many other for example. "gallery" border and background color

Hello,

I checked out some information pages about gallery (i.e. [2]), but I did not find out, why it is obviously not possible to add image-borders using <gallery>. I also would like to change the background color, but for the background directly behind the picture-thumb.

Seems that this kind of things is only possible using tables. I do not understand though, why a simple (?) function like borders can not be included in <gallery>. Pages like this one (Flags) might look much better I think.

Many thanks for your advide, Philipp (talk) 14:48, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, MediaWiki, the software that runs Wikipedia and Commons, is not written to allow such things. I doubt there's any inherent reason it can't be done. You might try making a feature request to include that sort of thing. Please see Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests for more information. Powers (talk) 16:32, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Malvrine

where is the town named Malvrine ? I remember living in the mountains of Malvrine where my family owned a general store and farm.

First, that question is better asked over at the reference desk. Second, it's possible that you misremeber the spelling of that town. There is no town named Malvrine in the U.S., though it appears to be a common misspelling of en:Malverne, New York, but I don't think that's the one you're looking for. (Farms in NYC? Mountains? No...) Third, it'd really help if you could at least state approximately where this town was supposed to be. You surely know at least the region where you once lived, don't you? Was that in the U.S.? If so, East or West? What kind of mountains were these? Real mountains, or rather hills? Lupo 07:47, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Most efficient way to replace images

I made quite a few optics diagrams, primarily for the Dutch Wikipedia, but they are of course available for others as well. At first I was having problems retaining the text when exporting images from Corel Draw to the SVG format. So I saved them as PNG. In the meantime I found out what I did wrong, so now I manage to produce SVG files from Corel Draw.

So I would like to replace some 15 PNG images by their SVG versions. What is the most efficient way to do this?

  • Can I just upload a file "MyImage.svg" over "MyImage.png" when only the filename extension is different (".png" ⇒ ".svg") using the "Upload new version of this file" facility? And is=f so, can I still see the list of all links that refer to the old image?
  • Or do I have to upload "MyImage.svg" as a new file, then modify all references to "MyImage.png" to "MyImage.svg", and subsequently submit a deletion request for the old file? And this fifteen times?
  • Or...?

Thanks for any advise.

HHahn (talk) 15:20, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

You have to upload svg files as new. Mediawiki software that Commons runs on cant handle files with incorrect extensions (like svg inside of xxxxxx.png). Also you may consider request to delete old unused png files if they are identical --Justass (talk) 15:29, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Special:Categories:Hoorn

Searching for a category, I read "Display categories starting at: Hoorn", but to my surprise Category:Hoorn was not there. It only shows up when one asks for "Display categories starting at: Hoor". Is this a bug, or... ? - Erik Baas (talk) 09:43, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

The actual search feature works the way one expects. The Special:Categories page seems to have what I would consider an Off-by-one error. Typing in the exact name of a category seems to cause the listing to start at the next category. I tried it with several examples. The text on the page that says "Display categories starting at:" should more properly say: "Display categories starting after:". --Teratornis (talk) 23:14, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Practical problems with choosing an approriate license

Please look at User talk:HHahn#File:Diagram Reflector GregoryMaksutov.svg, where I complained about the poor presentation of license type choices. Please see it as a suggestion for a new functionality: a clear selection form for choosing a lincense type.

There are ongoing discussions about this at Wikimedia Usability Initiative, please post your suggestion or comments there --Justass (talk) 15:35, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Even with the current upload form, there is—unless JavaScript is disabled—a Click here to get help button next to the license selector. When clicked, it opens a pop-up with some help text. On the "own work" upload form, it displays the text from MediaWiki:UploadFormLicenseHelp/ownwork. It's still not a "decision tree" like HHahn suggested on his talk page, but at least it does try to explain things in (relatively) simple English. Lupo 15:55, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
By the way, the "own work" situation is the most simple one. For my own work I can choose any license that is not too restrictive. But when I am uploading an image from another source, I have to comply with the license requirements set by that source. And that requires that I more or less understand that #$^%$@* lawyerese. As a Dutchman, I already have problems with Dutch lawyerese, but here it is even an a foreign language (English)...

Want to upload logo of my institute 'Dr.BATU, Lonere'

Since you did not give us a link to the logo you have in mind, we have no idea about the license either. First, see COM:CB#Trademarks - someone must determine whether the logo meets the threshold of originality that would make it copyrightable. If it does, then most likely the university holds the copyright. You could request permission from the university to let you publish the logo under a free license; if they agree, you would then follow the procedure in COM:OTRS. Note that the burden of proof is on the person who uploads an image to demonstrate that it is free content. See Commons:Project scope/Precautionary principle. --Teratornis (talk) 23:23, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Even if the logo is copyrighted, you might be able to take a photograph of a public scene which depicts the logo in a De minimis way. See COM:EIC#Copyright for more information about copyright on Wikimedia Commons. --Teratornis (talk) 23:25, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

COM:D tells how to request speedy deletion of your upload(s). --Teratornis (talk) 19:03, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
Some comments about File:Frost-MH.gif:
  • You should not place caption information such as "Figure 1" inside an image. See Wikipedia:Picture tutorial for instructions to place captions outside a displayed image. Captions and labels should be outside the image, to the extent possible, to make an image usable in other language editions of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects.
  • SVG is generally preferred for diagrams, rather than raster formats such as JPEG. See Help:SVG and COM:EIC#Inkscape.
  • We probably have more specific categories for images of this type. For example, Category:Physical organic chemistry might be suitable.

Permission to use image

Is this image allowed to be uploaded for use on the Ashley Benson article? [3]

Also, the image on the Aria Wallace page is also from this site. Tinton5 (talk) 02:18, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

No. The website is not the copyright holder but the photographer. Maybe the organization or company who uploaded it to that website is the copyright holder, im not sure if they are realy the photographer or just persons who copy other content to their picasa - however, it is unimportant because of the following. The person who uploaded the image to picasa selected a Creative Commons license (see right side: ). The file is not free for commercial reuse and not free for modification . To upload something to Commons the copyright holder must allow everything. They must allow every person or company to use their works in commercial publications or to make money with it and to modify it. So this image is not free. See Commons:Licensing. --Martin H. delete photographs and change them to redirects

There are or were four different versions of a photograph of Mathematician Andrew Wiles on commons:

  1. File:Andrew wiles1.jpg
  2. File:Andrew wiles1-2.jpg
  3. File:Andrew wiles1-3.jpg
  4. File:Andrew wiles1-4.jpg

They originally showed different attempts of reducing the oversharpening of the original image. Each version is linked to different articles in different interwikis.

Now the photographer C J Mozzochi asked me by e-mail that I replace all those versions by an improved processing of his original photograph, which I did for the four files.

Since I cannot change all articles in all interwikis linking to one of those versions, is it possible to delete three of the four and change them into redirects? --Ratzer1 (talk) 10:23, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

See Category:Templates for marking as superseded and Category:Templates for marking as supersedes. It is not customary to try to force all the Wikimedia Foundation projects to use any particular version of an image. You can place templates on image pages on Commons to mark images as either being superseded by another image, or as superseding other images. It's up to editors on each project to decide which image they want to use. --Teratornis (talk) 21:02, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
It may in general not be customary to force all the Wikimedia Foundation projects to use any particular version of an image, but here it is justified, because the original image provided by the creator was oversharpened by error, and all versions in circulation afterwards (until yesterday) were different attempts to reduce the oversharpening. Now the creator provided a better-processed image. Editors are of course free to further process that image and create new versions of it, but the old junk that is circulating out of error should be handed over to the bit bucket, or should it be in circulation forever? It has given the creator substantial headaches, as he conferred to me.--Ratzer1 (talk) 18:29, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello. I've got a question about a photograph of an old Austrian warship. It's this file which was uploaded some time ago with an unclear license. I'm trying to fix it so it can be used on en.wiki, and found it in an old book I have, which was published in the US in 1914. The question I have is, what is the relevant guideline for "works for hire" in Austria/EU? The book doesn't provide credits for each photo, but it has a page in the front that notes the various sources—which seem to all be newspapers and quarterlies and the like—so I'm operating on the assumption that the photo was taken for one of these newspapers. Can anyone help me get this straightened out? Parsecboy (talk) 11:50, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

The Work for hire article gives some idea how this works for EU countries. See also the links under COM:EIC#Copyright. --Teratornis (talk) 21:05, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. According to my understanding of {{PD-Austria}}, this image should be public domain in Austria as well, as it was published before 1940. Given that it was published before 1923 in the US, it doesn't matter when specifically it was published in Austria (which needs to be considered in relation to the US only to satisfy the 1996 URAA cut-off). Ruby Laser

I have uploaded a gallery of images of the original ruby laser, the first operational laser built by Theodore Maiman and first fired on May 16, 1960. I have added text to the Ruby Laser wiki article, describing a demonstration of this first laser in Vancouver on May 15, 2010.

I cannot find a wiki page that will allow me to attach the gallery of images of the original laser to the Ruby Laser wiki. There are a total of six images which give the viewer a detailed picture of the original laser.

Please help me attach the images to the Ruby Laser wiki article.

Thank you,

Guy Immega (talk) 16:27, 23. Mai 2010

Hi Guy Immega.
Thank you for sharing those images. You need to add descriptions some of your images and a license to this one: File:4 Maiman Laser Rear View.jpg. I have added the category Category:Ruby_lasers to the images so people will find those images and eventually use them in wikipedia articles too. I have added a link on the english Wikipedia article to the gallery. Amada44 (talk) 21:02, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I have a page for showing my images. I'm not fond of the "gallery" tag for this purpose, so I applied my own style to the page (actually I copied the format from other site, as can be seen at the source, but that's not the point). Everything looked good, until one day images stopped from appearing side by side, only to show up in a column. I have tried several formats, but I can't achieve what I want. One weird issue is that, when I hit "preview changes" it looks like it's working as expected (see here), but when I save changes, images go back to a column (you can check the page, or see here). What's happening?? How can I have all the images side by side as I used to have?? - Keta (talk) 15:51, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

What's wrong with the gallery tag? --Teratornis (talk) 07:18, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
The discussion is not about how I like or dislike the gallery tag, but about the problem with image alignment. - Keta (talk) 09:30, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
I'll take a look at this. That's another problem with ImageAnnotator. Have no time right now to deal with this, but I'll fix this in the next days. Lupo 08:24, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply Lupo. I had the feeling that it had something to do with ImageAnnotator, but when I removed a image which had notes the problem persisted, so I thought it was any other reason. Anyway something was happening here in Commons, since this page at German Wikipedia uses the same code and looked good. Good to know you have the source of the problem in sight, I'll be looking forward to any answer or solution you post. Thanks, - Keta (talk) 09:30, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I have another issue with how commons handles tables, which may be related to this. Compare the pages User:99of9/Test and w:User:99of9/Test reordered. These both have exactly the same content, and the previews are both good, but when the Commons version gets saved, the displayed version looks bad. --99of9 (talk) 09:59, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

All right, should be fixed. If you reload your browser's cache, it should not mess with your layouts anymore as long as either none of the images have annotations, or annotations are switched off for all images that are part of your layout and that do have annotations.
If there are annotations, and they are to be displayed, the script must insert a <div> around the image to have some base relative to which it can position the note rectangles. Since a <div> is a block-level HTML element, while a plain <img> tag is an inline element, layout may be affected in some cases, and there's no way around it except disabling note display for such images if the layout is important.
But for images not having notes at all, the script should now leave the HTML structure alone. That it did "mess with your galleries" at all was a bug.
Lupo 10:04, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
You did it! You're da man, thanks Lupo! :D - Keta (talk) 15:24, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
Well done. Now for the question that reveals my ignorance: How do I switch off annotations? --99of9 (talk) 13:48, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
See Help:Gadget-ImageAnnotator#Inline display of annotations and Help:Gadget-ImageAnnotator#Settings for a particular image use, which will point you to {{ImageAnnotations}} (controlling note display globally for a page) and {{ImageNoteControl}} (for single images). Lupo 14:03, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Dear Wikikmedia Commons: what a great idea this seems! My Q is this: I have been commissioned to write some science exam questions and wish to use some graphs and electron micrographs sourced from wikimedia commons. Currently I have stated 'Licensing Rights All images have been obtained through Wikimedia Commons under the following licence: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ ' please let me know what more I need to do? Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by 165.228.179.3 (talk • contribs) 01:26, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Different licenses have different attribution requirements, and for each image you should follow the rules of the license under which you're using it. (For files with multiple licenses, you can choose one.) In general, you should at least specify the license and the name (or pseudonym) of the author(s). IANAL, but I'd say a reasonable minimal attribution might look something like "Image by Joe R. Author, used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported license", or, if space is really tight, even just "Joe R. Author / CC-BY-SA 3.0". Mentioning Wikimedia Commons isn't really required (since we're not the author, but just a distributor), but it would be a good idea to include the URL of the image page here (i.e. "http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Some_image_name.png") if at all possible, since it not only makes reuse easier but also provides additional information on the licensing and authorship of the image. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 20:44, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

If you're using the form for uploading your own work, the source field should be prefilled with "{{Own}}", which is a template that expands to "Own work" (or the equivalent in your chosen language). Just leave it like that and you should be fine. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 20:44, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Transferring images from Flickr

Hi, user Aktiv I Oslo.no at Flickr has agree to make 136 of his pictures of Eurovision Song Contest 2010 participants available (all licensed cc-by-sa). Specifically these (Big 5 rehearsals) and these (yesterday's welcoming ball). Uploading them manually, even with on of the Flickr tools, would take forever. Is there any way to batch upload images from Flickr? EnemyOfTheState (talk) 21:46, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Yes, see Commons:Batch uploading. I am pretty sure a bot does it (I haven't fully read the page myself). Killiondude (talk) 21:49, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Another question

I've run into a minor problem at a FAC on en.wiki. This flag is tagged with the CCSA-2.5 license, which obviously isn't correct (I doubt F l a n k e r (talk · contribs) was around in 1861 to license it). I've been trying to track down something covering flags in the Italian copyright law, but so far have been unsuccessful—the only thing I've found pertains to official texts and acts of the government, and I'm not sure this would fall in that category. Can anyone shed some light on this situation? Parsecboy (talk) 01:41, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Actually, the licensing might be correct, as long as this is F l a n k e r's rendering of the flag's design and not a direct copy of a real flag. If it is a direct copy, then it should be {{PD-old}}. Powers (talk) 16:24, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
If it's the case that it is a direct copy, then wouldn't we need to know who designed the flag and when s/he died to satisfy PD-OLD? Parsecboy (talk) 19:42, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi Parsecboy, thanks for sending to me a PM for this talk. The image is not a direct copy of a particular image or flag (the flag was made in many variants), but my personal interpretation of Italian laws that regulates the flag and the crown (shape and colours). I think that since is a flag and a personal work it can be licensed under CCSA-2.5. --F l a n k e r (talk) 20:16, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response. I think based on what you and LtPowers have said everything is fine with the license. Thanks again for helping clear this up. Parsecboy (talk) 22:15, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

License for using pictures that I own

I am new to using Wikipedia and I'm trying to get the proper license to upload pictures that I own into a new article that I am creating. I have found several links that explain licenses and other details but I can't find where to actually obtain the right license. Where should I go to receive this license?

You don't need to "obtain/receive" a license. You already own the copyright to your images. You can choose which free license you would like to use if you want to upload to Commons. A popular option is the dual GFDL/cc-by-sa-3.0 license (see upload form). -- Deadstar (msg) 08:57, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

License check needed

Sorry, don't have time to do it myself, but this image has apparently the wrong license (read the Source description). Not sure if the image is free at all because I don't know the source (and don't have the time to check what it is)... Thanks for taking care, Ibn Battuta (talk) 07:45, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Looks OK. This Scott Kelby is some guy who organized that "Worldwide Photo Walk" event (whatever that is exactly... apparently some kind of photo competition). There's a whole Flickr group for that event. I would presume that the photographers keep their copyrights, so it's OK if they upload their images here or elsewhere. Lupo 08:10, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Misunderstanding? My primary concern was that the license is "I, the copyright holder, ..." although the uploader doesn't seem to be the copyright holder. The question if the "source" had given permission for free use was a secondary issue. --Ibn Battuta (talk) 19:03, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Why do you think the uploader didn't take that photo? Under "source", he wrote "I took this image in the world wide photowalk by scott kelby." So, I understand that he participated as a photographer in that Worldwide Photo Walk event. If you look at that Flickr group, you'll see that people from all over the world participated. Lupo 19:51, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
(Sorry, I had the predicted time issues over the last days.) It's a bit difficult to assume that you really have no idea about what I was talking. The ambivalent text of the source description, the absence of any links to the original, and an unknown uploader were indicating that the uploader had simply taken the image from elsewhere (as happens all the time), so I requested someone to look into it. When doing that, one quickly sees that not only has the photowalk international contributors (thanks for that hint), but much more importantly, the specific image was contributed by some "Dardoush" (= identical name to the Commons uploader). Fine. So why don't you write so, instead of asking me to look it up myself? I had explicitly said that I didn't have the time to check it myself, and that this is why I posted here. Very odd help indeed... [If you want to get back to me about this post or conversation, please post on my discussion page. I won't be watching this discussion any further.] --Ibn Battuta (talk) 12:12, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Which license for Russian Empire -era photographs taken in Suomenlinna, Finland?

I have taken a few photographs-of-photographs in Category:Manege Military Museum in en:Suomenlinna, originally taken when Finland was part of Russian Empire as Grand Duchy of Finland (pre-1917). The author is not stated, probably unknown. Original dates are not in the museum description either, probably between 1890-1910, but could be anytime from 1870s to 1917. A minor complication is that Suomenlinna was, as I understand, not part of the (autonomous) Grand Duchy of Finland but a military area under direct Russian central rule. {{PD-RusEmpire}} explicitly excludes territory of Grand Duchy of Finland. Should I use {{PD-Finland50}} or {{Anonymous-EU}}? MKFI (talk) 18:09, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

I suppose it really depends on where the photos were first published. However, if you can establish that they're either {{PD-RusEmpire}} or {{PD-Finland50}}, then I suppose you could tag them with both and add a note on the description page about the situation. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 20:19, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

I have read and re-read all of the steps several times, but when I upload my images (I have two: one is with a permission from the author and the other is my own work) the webpage "loads" after I hit "upload", but doesn't take me anywhere - no success message, etc. I've previewed and there isn't a save button showing up, but still no matter what I do I can't seem to get an answer as to what the status is or if it took or not. I also can't seem to understand what else is needed to upload an image that has permission and I've sent the e-mail off with the permission in the body text (twice) and haven't heard anything. My other image is from the company and is a picture of the building and frontage - there isn't a copywrite assigned that I am aware of so what is needed to get this uploaded? I've recreated this in Photoshop, so can I safely claim this as my own? If not, what should I be uploading as?

SVG image thumbnail not displaying

I don't know, but see the links under COM:EIC#Inkscape such as Help:SVG which has a FAQ section. If you can't find an answer there, and nobody answers here, you could try asking on Commons:Graphics village pump. If you want to experiment, you might try cutting out a small section from the SVG file and experiment with things such as converting all text to paths, embedding any bitmap images instead of using external file references, etc. --Teratornis (talk) 20:50, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Strange thing. Anything below 694px width is not or only partly working: 694px works but not 693px. Regarding Teratornis advice to not use external references: I think this works never, just for your info. --Saibo (Δ) 22:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Template:Us states

I am trying to get the states in Template:Us states to display differently if the user has Spanish as his or her language (i.e. the state of Missouri would say "Misuri" if the user had Spanish as the language) - See the template in action here: Category:Roman_Catholic_churches_in_Puerto_Rico and try uselang=es to see how I had the names translated. A better method might be to use {{Autotranslate}}, if it will work for what you are doing (I'm not sure if it will). See Special:PrefixIndex/Template:Created with Inkscape for a worked-out example of a simpler template. --Teratornis (talk) 23:52, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Delete old version and rename new version (or, now what have I done?)

What I meant to do was upload an improved version of Oliver SCPA Cincinnati 1992.jpg. I could not get the new version to appear for some reason. So I uploaded it as Oliver SCPA Cincinnati 1992a.jpg. That worked. Trouble is, there is an OTRS permission en route for the original file name.

What I want to do is delete the old ugly version and keep the new one, but with the old name so OTRS knows that the permission should apply.

I am sure I did all this the hard way, but what do I do now? Thanks in advance.

Your question is easier to answer if you link to the images in question:
The history of the first file shows all your uploads. Why did you revert it? Sometimes the image page needs to be purged to show the current revision in its preview. I reverted the image back to your cropped revision. I had to purge and refresh the page a few times to make the new image show up in the preview. You can request speedy deletion for your duplicate upload with the {{Duplicate}} template. --Teratornis (talk) 22:14, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Paulscrawl (talk) 02:07, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Sometimes the existing category structure is inadequate, and we have to make new categories. See for example categories I have made, mostly pertaining to wind power which was less complete back when I started looking at it. After I added some categories, other users extended the structure further there. Your uploaded file:
could for example go into Category:Economic maps of the United States but all the other images in that category show maps of the whole contiguous 48 states. There might be a need for additional subcategories of Category:Maps of the United States. I see similar maps relating to hurricane tracks such as File:Ike2008filledrainblk.gif but I don't immediately see a suitable subcategory of Category:Maps of the United States for those either. Or perhaps Category:Maps of the Gulf of Mexico. Sometimes the further you look for categories, the more gaps in the structure you find. One has to think carefully about how to extend the structure and not make categories willy-nilly, because they are inconvenient to un-do if later they turn out to be suboptimal. If appropriate categories already exist, they should not be too hard to find if you type keywords describing the images into the search box. If you cannot find suitable specific categories, try searching for more general categories - for example a larger containing geographic region, or a more general concept containing the specific topic of the image. The bot message seems to be telling you to look at categories on the English Wikipedia which are mostly for categorizing articles, but may give clues about categories to use on Commons for images. The category systems here and on the Wikipedias are entirely independent, so a category may exist on a Wikipedia and have no counterpart on Commons (yet). As the Deepwater Horizon spill is recent, the category structure on Commons may not have caught up yet. --Teratornis (talk) 22:25, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

next 200 in category do not work

"next 200" in category Category:Boska komedia do not change page content. 83.143.139.40 14:56, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

I confirm this odd result. The problem appears to be the link parameter: &from=Boska+komedja which should instead be the name of the 200th file in the category. See for example Category:Maps which has a next 200 link giving the name of an actual file: &from=File%3AKreuzberg+61.png. I wonder if the problem might have something to do with the {{Book}} template in the Boska komedia category, which has a title parameter that disagrees with the category name. I tried commenting out the template but that had no effect on the "next 200" link. The link should actually be something like:
which incidentally displays a category page containing no files. The parent category page: Category:Polish Wikisource books shows a count of 846 files in the Boska komedia category. I'm stumped. --Teratornis (talk) 22:06, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Maybe the next 200 link should uses plus characters instead of underscores:
but that does not work either. Still stumped. --Teratornis (talk) 22:32, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

adding public domain images

Hi, I added File:Double-exchange.PNG and File:Exchange interaction 1.PNG but failed to provide the information in the proper way. Both are in the public domain, according to [5] and [6]. I tried to re-upload the first one but I think it did not work properly. Any help? -- 4lex (talk) 16:59, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

See my edits in the first image as an example how to accomplish it. -- H005 21:45, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi,

I am trying to learn how to upload a picture. I uploaded the following:

I got a notice that it has an error; something about license or copyright. How do I correct the error? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Iqyax (talk • contribs) 10:03, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

I removed the {{No license}} message template as you figured out to add {{Self}}. When you fix a problem in response to a message template, you may remove the message template. However, it may be hard for a new user to be sure about when the problem is really fixed. Read Commons:First steps and Commons:Licensing. --Teratornis (talk) 20:34, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Original drawing (Frost-MH.gif) had an error; it was uploaded. Now I think I uploaded a technically corrected version; had Licensing, Summary all put in But don't see the drawing

I successfully uploaded a drawing for an article I have in my user space.

The drawing is Frost-MH.gif . The original drawing looked all right except for the error.

Thus I fixed the drawing on my pc and twice or three-times did the "browse and upload" but can't see the corrected drawing this time. It has the same file name (i.e. Frost-MH.gif).

I made certain that the Licensing item was filled in. This time there was no list of items to fill in (whose work, ownership, etc) but there was a "Summary" window. I filled in the Source, ownership, etc in that window.

There was a Red colored admonition about "Source" and L\"Licensing" despite my having done that.

What have I done in error and what can I do to get the drawing?

Thanks in advance.

Howard Zimmerman

P.S. Later I'll try to use the technique I've used before in another article to bring the drawing into my article. This is one further item I'm wary of.
