Recent changes link in classic skin

The link to recent changes is no longer provided in the classic skin. I have not looked at the monobook skin, but I assume it is missing from there also.

Today the link has returned. What you wrote about what a web page skin should do is in my opinion is both technically accurate and written in easy to understand terminology. The classic skin is different from the monobook skin however, due to the tool tabs that are accessible to the monobook skin, "check usage" is the tool miss most often and remember being available via the monobook skin. That useful tool is just a template preview away though, so not worth what I consider to be a cumbersome and ugly skin.

Copyright of item containing logo

I've photographed a camera to use in illustrating an article at wikipedia. The camera has its manufacturer's logo on it. The Logo would be copyrighted. Can someone confirm my interpretation that uploading the photo as my own work is valid (since the objective is not to show the logo but rather the camera). It should be fine. There is a principle called "de minimis" that provides an exception to copyright protection when the copyrighted work is only a minor part of the image. On top of that, many logos do not qualify for copyright protection. For example, the D60 on the Nikon camera would not be copyrightable since it's just plain text. Where is document on prefered format?

Can someone point me to the article on what format would be prefered? I've taken the photo, cropped it. Hello, it is always advised to upload your document in the better possible quality. Please upload your photo in JPEG format, quality 100 % —uploads are limited to 100 MB, I doubt your file sizes as much as that. ;) →Diti the penguin — 13:08, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Yes, we prefer the highest quality version of the image you have. The software will automatically create lower-resolution versions of the file when it's added to an article. J.smith (talk) 00:45, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Image for Herbertshire Castle

I want to upload an image of Herbertshire Castle to add to the castle's article. I'd like to use one of the photographs here, but I can't find any information about who the photographer was. I know that, normally, this would make them ineligible to be included, but in this case, the castle is known to have been demolished in 1950. Therefore, any photographs of the castle are necessarily out of copyright (see Wikipedia:PD#Crown_copyrights) and in the public domain. So this is an unusual case in which the copyright status is known (albeit indirectly) but the original author isn't. Is there any way either of the photographs could be uploaded without violating the image use guidelines? Graymornings (talk) 07:52, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, no, you can't use those images, at least without a lot of research. In the UK, copyright expires 70 years after the death of the photographer so the images may well still be in copyright if the photographer can be identified. Crown copyright will not apply as these are not Government photos. There are special rules where the photographer's name cannot be found, but they apply only after detailed research has been carried out without success. See {{PD-UK-unknown}} for a summary. I would start by emailing the website owners, and checking the local history section of your library. If you do use that tag it is essential that you specify in detail the research you have carried out (eg who you have asked, where you have looked, the names of books you have consulted etc). --MichaelMaggs (talk) 11:47, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Possible bug when nominating file for deletion

Hi there. I nominated a file for deletion, and created the log page with the following:

{{subst:delete2|image=File:United_States_Marshals_Service_Seal.jpg|reason=SVG now available at File:usms-seal.svg --~~~~}}

This caused the deletion template on the nominated image page to complain about the nomination being incomplete. Replacing the File:usms-seal.svg with [[:File:usms-seal.svg]] fixed the error, although it probably shouldn't have happened in the first place.

Images not properly registered in database

I think there may be a bug in the database. I uploaded several of my images on commons on 12/30 and 12/31 and linked them to articles in en.wiki. The images appear on the proper pages in wiki, but do not appear properly on my commons gallery page. Previous images display correctly. Check usage on the commons images also comes up empty, even though they do appear properly in wiki.

Author of derivate work

I have tried to upload a translated version of the file Greenhouse Gas by Sector.png with the derivateFX-tool, but I fail because of an alert: "Please complete author information for the following images: - File:Greenhouse_Gas_by_Sector.png". I have tried to put an infobox in the original picture and also several methods to put an additional infobox in the derivate, but I can't make it work. What's wrong? Unlisted license : e-puck Robot Open Source Hardware License Version 1.0

Use of newly-scanned images from Bundesarchiv

Hello, I am considering paying for the scan of a few images from the Bundesarchiv that are not among the ones granted to wikimedia (they are not digitalized yet). I was wondering if you could clarify for me whether there would be any trouble from wikimedia's side to my uploading it along with the ones already in place from Bundesarchiv. Besides, I'd be grateful if you briefly summarize what steps I should take for a perfect upload (I don't mean how to upload the images but what license to use, information I should quote,etc). Help

This picture is one I would like to upload, but I am not sure exactly what to do with photos from flicker. The image credit seems to be the DoD, but the CC license images suggest that its not appropriate for commons use. Since when in doubt, one should ask, I would like to know if I can upload this image to the commons, and if not, then what license would I need to upload it at Wikipedia? The NARA says for this image "Access Restriction(s): Unrestricted; Use Restriction(s): Unrestricted." No mention of an NC-only restriction. Besides, I'd say as a US gov't work it's simply PD. If you upload it from Flickr, give both the Flickr source and additionally {{NARA-image|520788}} as the source, and use {{PD-USGov-Military-Navy}} as the license. Lupo 08:49, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Author granted permission to use image

Whatever license he put it under. Wikimedia Commons is a collection of free content, not merely stuff that we can use, so it's not good enough to say we have permission to use it; we have to know under what terms it is released to the world to edit and reuse.--Prosfilaes (talk) 13:05, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Author permission - license not shown

I have a similar problem. I wrote an author and he contacted his publisher (nature.com) who gave him permission to give me permission to use the image - including the license information. However, the options listed in the upload file section don't include the restrictions or license that he provided. It seems to me that the image license options are a too limited. For example, PLOS online allows all of its images to be used elsewhere without requesting permission - public domain. Could there be another section added to the upload allowing people to give information on a unique license? This might help the process a bit. People upload copy written material material all the time - at least this way it gives the honest people a chance to do things properly.Thompsma (talk) 08:41, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Probleme

Hallo zusammen, seit dem 02.01.09 steht in meiner Galerie der Satz "Replication of S3 is halted. This means that the data for most wikis is old, and growing older.Only data for some of the larger wikis is still kept up to date.New hardware is being ordered shortly." Was soll mir damit gesagt werden?... auch werden Bilder die ich seit diesem Datrum hochgeladen habe nicht mehr in der Galerie als Thumb angezeigt. Ausserdem wird angezeigt das in der Kategorie X zur Zeit Y Bilder sind, aber das stimmt nicht mit dem überein was mir dann in der Kategorie angezeigt wird. Was mach ich falsch? Du machst nichts falsch, der Toolserver, auf dem das Gallerie-Werkzeug liegt, hängt aber nach Wartungsarbeiten ein bisschen hinterher und ist nicht mehr auf dem neuesten Stand. License for old TV station logo

I would like to add an old TV station logo that is no longer in use to that station's history page, as well as some 25 year old screen shots and an ad from the local paper with a station logo. What license covers those?

We don't know under what license those items would be covered. You would have to ask the copyright holder. Note that only if the items are old enough to be public domain in their country of origin, or if the copyright holder has released them under a free license, could we host the files. By default these are "All rights reserved" so we can't host them here on Commons. However, English Wikipedia permits something called "Fair Use". See Wikipedia:NONFREE for more details. J.smith (talk) 16:23, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

how to add categories

I am trying to attach a number of Victorian Book Covers and Frontispieces I will be uploading to Categories, but for the life of me can't figure out how to do this. Please help

Categories are added to the image description page. To do this click "edit", just like you do to change the description. Then, at the end of the page, you can add a category, for example [[Category:Frontispieces]]. Another way to do this is to enable the Hot Cat gadget in your preferences. Why my uploaded files are not coming with the 'search engine' provided by wiki ?

removed watermark from image but cannot replace

Question about license

Could you give us a link? There are two possibilities here. 1) You mistakenly uploaded under a Creative Commons licence a file which is in the Public Domain and for which you do not own the copyright (e.g. a very old photograph); in that case, the change was correct. 2) Someone changed the licence of an image for which you own the copyright (e.g. a photograph taken by you); in that case, revert their change and write a word on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/User problems. Replace image

I'm green red colourblind. This diagram http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phase-diag.svg is poor as it is difficult to determine that the green and red lines are different. I changed the red to a yellow, which makes the graph easier to interpret. How can I upload the new svg, replacing the old one? The documentation is not at all useful; all that the writers are interested in is ensuring that non-free images are not used. This should be intuitive.

Right. There was a link to http://toolserver.org/%7Eluxo/derivativeFX which simply does not work. the file is now uploaded to http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phase-diag3.svg and I need to ask someone to move it. Why can't I use my Wikipedia account? Why is this process so hard? It really makes me feel like not bothering.

The Toolserver was having trouble for a few days. It was working better the last time I accessed it. Moving images on Commons is not simple, but you don't really need to do it. You can just edit the article(s) that use File:Phase-diag.svg to use your new File:Phase-diag3.svg instead. Commons has lots of images duplicated to have captions in different languages, and so on. There is no harm in having some similar images on Commons for different uses. As to why Commons is hard to learn, that's because it is complex. The complexity results from the size of w:Wikimedia Foundation's many projects, the fact that dealing with images is generally harder than dealing with text on computers, and the multilingual nature of Wikipedia. (While the English Wikipedia is the largest, it accounts for only about one quarter of Wikipedia articles in all languages. Presumably readership is similar - many people, maybe a majority of the world's people, want to read Wikipedia in a language other than English. Thus we have a tremendous incentive to share content between the many Wikipedias in different languages. That's why Commons exists as a separate wiki.) You can't use your w:English Wikipedia account to manipulate files on Commons because they are separate wikis. However, you can set up a single signon account; see: w:WP:EIW#SingleSignon. As to whether you should "bother" to try figuring out some complex procedure on Wikipedia or Commons, in my opinion it's all about having fun, so if something isn't enjoyable for you, then either forget it, or try again later. In the future, you may have learned more, and the Wikimedia Foundation projects are improving, so maybe a task that is difficult now will become easier in the future. Or maybe someone else will have taken care of it. In the meantime, you could join w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Accessibility, where you might find some other users who can help with what you are trying to do. --Teratornis (talk) 00:49, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

I would like to add the word, "Frankensota" . This describes the way a clown can win an election. To have a "clown" as a political represenative. The mentality of a state that votes for the strangest of the strange. A stolen, ballot stuffing election that ends with recount after recount. "Only in "Frankensota" would this happen.

This is Wikimedia Commons, which is not a dictionary at all. Please see Commons:Project scope on what Commons is for.

Neither would a newly-made word fit Wikipedia.

You can add it to a special list at Wiktionary though: wikt:Wiktionary:List of protologisms.

Help needed

These files in the [Category: Perchta]] are of so bad quality that they sould not be used. They should be deleted. Othervise they hinder other better quality pictures to be used.

All these files are currently used on at least one page, so clearly, some people disagree with your statement that they should not be used. See for example af:Alpynse mitologie, it:Perchta and nl:Perchta. Files which are in use on a Wikimedia project are only deleted for copyright issues and the like. They were used before, when no other pictures were awailable. Since the end of the last year a set of much better pictures were added by somebody. The old pictures are of very bad quality. Just a black square, you can hardly see anything. They will never became featchured pictures, that is for sure. The old ones are replaced now.

Nonetheless, so long as someone is using them, they won't be deleted. If there are better pictures, once the Wikipedias choose to use them, then these can be deleted. Frankly, these pictures look fine to me, and given the nature of them, I don't see how your replacements (whatever they are) could be absolutely better; someone may prefer the style or framing the current ones.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:14, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Your introducing a false dichonomy - The existence of low-quality images does not preclude or prevent uploading of higher-quality images. In addition- low quality images can be valuable to us in illustrating the subject in different lighting and other circumstances. You called these images "just a black square" - if that is the case on your computer then I suspect that you have a contrast or brightness adjustment problem on your monitor. The images are overly-dark, but I can prove using objective computer technology that these images are not solid black. --J.smith (talk) 16:56, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

Can't login to commons

I can no longer log in to Commons.

I forgot my password and asked for a new one. Received a temporary password. The commons login did not recognize the temp password, so I had to login to wikipedia (using the temp password). Created new password there. Commons does not recognize the new password.

What can I do to fix this?

Did you create SUL? If not, did you reset password in Commons or Wikipedia? Try to reset password in Commons.

If all of these will not help, you could create new account and request to usurp old one. See Commons:Changing username.

I reset password in Commons but the temp password (or code) I received could only be used in Wikipedia. I could try resetting again but will have to wait until tomorrow... Don't have SUL and it will not migrate the Commons account if I create one now. Should I create SUL now anyway?

Upload the new file with the same name. You will be asked if you wish to overwrite the existing file. Select the equivalent of YES. ake sure you explain the reason in the edit summary. Wrong file name

Somewhere, some way, somehow, somebody made a mistake regarding this picture's file name, naming it Komondor Westminster Dog Show.jpg. and Komondor Westminster Dog Show crop.jpg

There is no way that this dog is a Komondor. Komondors are huge dogs, many are over 30 inches tall, making them one of the largest breeds of dog. Males are minimum 100 pounds and up. And Komondor puppies do not have a mature mop – coat, so it is not a Komondor puppy. The dog in the picture is a similar but much smaller dog breed, a white Puli, a small size mop dog, similar to the Komondor but really much smaller. This files should be renamed Puli Westminster Dog Show.jpg., and Puli Westminster Dog Show crop.jpg, because the title is incorrect and it is confusing for people who are not familiar with these dog breeds.

There are two options to remedy the error:

Upload the images into a more appropriate namespace and mark the wrongly named images with {{Badname}}.
{{Rename media}} adds the image to a group of images that will be renamed.

When using these templates, out of respect for the administrators time, try to add a credible online source that verifies the correction. It would be impossible to have an administrative staff who knows everything and/or all credible sources and/or all sides of any naming scheme for any subject which can have an image uploaded here (even if individuals within the administrative staff do not agree with that statement). Adding credible source or sources to the talk page or within  should keep those references as part of the history of the image here and be helpful in the future. -- carol (talk) 00:18, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

Problem with downloaded images

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information.

I am surprised to not being able to upload Image:Ks Hp0+Zs1.gif while I have had no problem with the other ones (Image:Ks Hp0.svg, Image:Ks Ks1.svg, ...). Could someone say to the software that this is a good filename?

This is an international image server. Simply adding the characters "German railway signal" to the filename as in File:German railway signal Ks Zs3v.svg should not interfere with a bot being able to manage it and would greatly improve its name for human readers of it. en:Entropa photograph

Hello, I would like to ask for help about copyright issues related to files which I have just uploaded to English Wikipedia (en:File:Entropa.jpg and en:File:Entropa-detail.jpg) but about which I am not sure whether they may be uploaded to Commons. They are photographs of an art work exhibited temporarily (for the time of the Czech presidency of the EU, i.e. January to June 2009) in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels (seat of the Council of the European Union). The work is exhibited there, so that any workers and guests can see it in the atrium, and although the general public is not allowed to enter the building without a purpose, they can also see it clearly through a glass wall at the entrance. The art work is creation of a contemporary Czech artist who has been commissioned to create it by the Czech government. It has been recently covered by mainstream media all over the world, thus making it a notable topic also for Wikipedia, and a photograph thereof helps the readers to understand the topic better. The photographs I provided are themselves my work and I am ready to relase my photographer's copyright under cc-by-sa (or any other suitable license if that would be necessary to allow for their appearance here). The sculptor holds the copyright to the sculpture and any photograph of the sculpture is a derivative work. This means that it isn't possible for you to release the photos under a free licence, since you don't hold all the rights. Therefore, this file isn't allowed on Commons. Ok, so I search flickr for a picture of a female who is still without a photo. I found one, posted by VH1, on flickr and the licensing information on the page said that "Anyone could use this picture". So I uploaded it to Wiki, and they deleted it. Can you tell me what exactly about the file was wrong?

Hello,

The license on the Flickr picture is all rights reserverd this means nobody can use the image. Therefor I deleted the image as a copyvio. If you want to upload pictures from Flickr to Commons please make sure it has the CC-BY or CC-BY-SA license, all other licensing is not allowed on Commons and will be deleted at sight.

Free program screenshot

Hello, I'd like to ask experienced Commons users a question. For example, I have a free code editor application, some lines of GPL code and I want to capture its screenshot to upload to Commons. Is it still free if I include Windows' window border into my screenshot? Or should I crop to remove the window border out of my picture, only keep the content of it? I want to clarify this situation. Cropping the boarder is a good idea, but it's not as necessary as Abigor makes out. For one, if it's very simple then it's likely not copyrightable. Also, if it is copyrightable and it only takes up a tiny part of your image (by percentage) then it is likely covered by de-minimus. -J.smith (talk) 16:32, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Did your father make it in the course of his duties in the US military? If so, it is public domain, so just type the following into the information box in the upload form:

If he made it in his spare time, it is probably copyrighted as his unpublished work. In that case you need him (or his estate) to pick an appropriate license as listed at Commons:Licensing, and prove it. To do this, he should either upload it himself, or (better) send our volunteers a message of consent as described at Commons:Email templates.

I just created a category with the wrong wording, how do I get it deleted?

Sergio Galindo

I have a photo of the Mexican novelist Sergio Galindo that I want to upload to the Wikipedia article about him that I have authored. The photo appeared on the cover of the following publication:

Galindo, Sergio (1970). Nudo. Mexico City: Editorial Joaquín Mortiz.

No copyright or authorship is indicated in the book, and the copyright for the book is now owned by the author's widow, Angela Gonzalez de Galindo, who also owns the original photograph. The photograph was scanned and sent to me at her request by the author's son, Manuel Galindo. Sra Gonzalez de Galindo does not recall who took the photograph, which was taken over forty years ago.

Can't upload image because my account is too new?

Argh... I want to revert a revert on the image "File:Nortel_DMS100_public_voice_exchange.jpg". I tried in Wikipedia to upload the jpeg that I want but when I did so, Wikipedia told me that since I was uploading over an existing image, I would have to come to this Commons thing and do it here instead. So I made an account here but now when I try to upload the image it tells me I'm not allowed to upload over an existing image because my account is too new and that I should get somebody at this help desk to do it for me. This is incredibly frustrating, I just want to revert a revert. When you say you want to "revert a revert," do you mean that you want to upload the white-balanced version again? The collection of images here are for more than just the editors of an article on one of the wikipedias. Please, and especially in the case where there is a dispute, upload the white-balanced version into a separate namespace. This simple and within the scope action effectively keeps the dispute at the article and gives other users of the image a choice. -- carol (talk) 01:04, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I see your point, but in this case the dispute cannot be "kept at the article" because the dispute was never at an article. The dispute originated on the image description page, so my thinking was that that would be the appropriate place to work it out. Either that or I have to go to all the articles that use the image and *start* disputes, which does not seem ideal. I'm new to uploading/editing images and whatnot, so this process is frustrating me a little bit. Are there specific guidelines I should review that deal with the subject of uploading a "better" version of an image? I obviously misunderstood the complete set of circumstances. I have been renovating prints which are approximately 130 years old and 130 years aged lately and the edits I have been making clearly improve the image. I have been uploading the renovation into the single existing namespace here with the understanding that a better renovation might appear into that namespace. In an attempt to not hinder image restoration evolution here, I always reupload the original image into a new namespace which contains the word "original" and a cropped version with the book page stuff removed in the case that this would be more desirable for articles or for other uses. All of the versions (mine and others if they exist) go into a gallery in the |other_versions= section of the {{Information}} template. The most recent example of this is:

The gallery wiki tag allows a "perrow=5" attribute which allows the thumbnails to appear on one line and include the renovations that others have made if they exist here. Putting the thumbnail of all of the versions onto all of the versions makes it easy for others to get what they need or the version they are more in favor of.

Your situation is less obvious as it is easy to see both sides of the argument. The word "original" is useful as this version of the image has more of the information available within it. I can say this one thing though, from my experience with the automatic adjustment via white point -- it is only sometimes an improvement and the improvements made via an experienced hand and eye coordinated person are usually much nicer and more accurate. -- carol (talk) 03:17, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

Why are some Taken with categories hidden and others are not?

Somewhat new to commons and just noticed the Taken by categories. Some of these are hidden categories and some are not. Is there a standard or reason why some are hidden i.e. Category:Taken with Nikon D1 and others are not i.e. Category:Taken with Nikon D50? Just curious. This is just a guess, but it is an option that some creators of categories used and others didn't. I am unaware of any standard for which categories should be hidden or not and I myself have created some hidden categories for reasons which have nothing to do with good reasons to hide categories or not. -- carol (talk) 01:09, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

You can upload the photos to Commons (this site) if you want to release them under a suitably free license, but the text of your article belongs somewhere else. See Commons:Project scope. Maybe you can create your article on Wikitravel. Note that wikis like Commons use their own markup language called wikitext, so the file you have in Microsoft Publisher will not be directly uploadable. Instead you must type your article in the markup language of the wiki you want to use. This is because a wiki is a Web site that is directly editable by its users, without the need for any extra software like Microsoft Publisher. Desktop applications like that defeat large-scale collaboration, because the different vendors refuse to standardize their products. Therefore, projects like Commons and Wikipedia wrote their own markup languages that run on the server computers, so all the users can share and edit each other's contributions. Participating in wikis is lots of fun, but it takes a substantial commitment of time and effort to read the friendly manuals and learn what to do. Tried to upload an improved version of the file Altoidstins1.jpg but it said my account is too new, although I created the original file and uploaded it to wikipedia years ago. At the suggestion of the webpage, I uploaded the new version to wikimedia commons with a different filename (Altoidstins1b.jpg) and am now requesting that someone replace the original with this new version. You need to type the name of the book you scanned, and the acknowledgement to the painter/gallery that the book author gives. Then we can change the license or public domain tag to the correct one (it is most important to know if the picture was published before 1949: if the picture was in a private collection we may not be able to keep it.) If not, the pictures may be deleted.

Broken thumbnail

The 180px thumbnail version of File:Karhun kapulalossi.jpg seems to be broken. The upper half of the image is fine, the lower half just comes out grey. I get the same results running different browsers on different computers over an 18 hour period, so I'm confident it isn't a local caching issue. The full size image, and the 200px thumbnail are both fine, so I'm guessing this is some kind of image processing/caching issue on the Wikimedia servers. It also ran remarkably quickly, which makes me doubt if the thumbnail really was recreated. Can anybody help here. Heh. I'm not actually an admin here on Commons, I just happened to have the page watchlisted. Anyway, if you have JavaScript enabled, there should be a "purge" tab at the top of file description pages (but, a bit annoyingly, not on other pages) that you can click to purge the cache. There's also a gadget you can enable in you preferences to add links to both action=purge and thumb.php to the toolbox — but I don't find it that useful, since the purge link is redundant to the tab and the thumb.php link still requires you to edit to URL to get the right thumbnail size. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 23:44, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

How can I edit maps?

I've seen editors upload maps with countries color-coded based on some criterion or another. I've seen editors other than their creator come in and upload an edited version of those maps. If you can be more specific about the particular map(s) you want to make, someone might be able to give you exact instructions. For general help, see Commons:Map resources and the links under w:WP:EIW#Map. If you want more information about a specific map, you can leave questions on the user talk page of any user who has worked on the map. In my experience, most Wikipedia users will provide clues about what they did if you ask them. Some users leave notes on their user pages that explain the kinds of work they do. Serverprobleme? - Bildfrage

Hallo zusammen, kann es sein das die Server immer noch massive Probleme haben hier alles auf aktuellen Stand zu halten? Habe schon vor einiger Zeit neue Kategorien angelegt bzw. Bilder in entsprechend richtige Kategorien verschoben. Wenn ich jetzt aber als nicht angemeldeter Besucher nach diesen Bildern schaue ist das immer noch auf dem alten Stand. Stellenweise stimmt auch die Zahlenangabe (wieviel Bilder sind in einer Kategorie) in keinster Weise mit den dann angezeigten überein! Als angemeldeter User stimmt aber wieder alles...... Oder müssen die Änderungen erst noch überprüft und freigegeben werden?...... Ausserdem habe ich einige Bilder im Hochformat hochgeladen (vorher mit AcdSee10 in das Hochformat gedreht), aber angezeigt werden sie im Querformat. Hallo Diether, eigentlich sollte soweit auf Commons alles funktionieren. Der Toolserver hat im Moment Probleme, da ist allerdings neue Hardware schon unterwegs. Bilder sollten also schon in den entsprechenden Kategorien sein, möglicherweise hast du noch eine alte Version der Seite im Cache. Die Zahlenangaben, wie viele Bilder in einer Kategorie sind, sind leider nicht genau und manchmal auch völlig daneben. Dies kommt oft bei Kategorien vor, in die oft Bilder ein- und wieder aussortiert werden und bei Kategorien, in die Bilder per Vorlage einsortiert werden. Das Problem ist bekannt, irgendwo habe ich dazu auch schonmal einen Bug report gesehen. Änderungen sind direkt sichtbar und müssen, anders als auf de.wikipedia, nicht gesichtet o.ä. werden. Bei deinen Bildern habe ich nur File:Reiche Zeche Freiberg 06.jpg finden können, das im falschen Format zu sein scheint. Möglicherweise hast du hier einfach nur vergessen, es nach dem Drehen abzuspeichern. Das macht aber gar nichts, auf Commons gibt es einen Bot, der die Bilder in 90°-Schritten drehen kann. Dazu schreibst du einfach {{Rotate|90}} auf die Bildbeschreibungsseite, wobei 90 die Gradzahl ist, um die das Bild im Uhrzeigersinn gedreht werden soll. I am writing an article on Graphics here [[5]]. Because this article is about graphics I need a lot of different pictures, and as you know the problem of copyright make this task very difficult. Fortunately I found many of the pictures that I need in the en-wiki. But some of these logos are not transferable to other wikis. Please help me to transfer these three image-files from the English wiki to Simple-English.

These are going to be used strictly for this educational article. I have been told that some of these logos can not be used in SE_wiki because of fair use, and only somebody in Common can do something about this. Please have a look at the article itself and you can see why without these images the article would be ruined. I assume you mean this picture: File:Bilbao.Koons01.jpg? You can contact the photographer by leaving him a message at his user talk page here: User_talk:JoJan. The photographer has licensed it under two licenses: the GFDL and the Creative Commons attribution 2.5. That means you can choose either of those two. The CC attribution license basically just means you have to give proper credit (but read the license for details). If you plan to use the image, you might also consider the copyright status of the sculpture itself; the photo might be a derivative work. (I have no idea what, if any, copyright law applies to topiary sculptures in Spain.) --Amble (talk) 09:20, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

How can I add a bot flag to my account? I'm going to use pagefromfile.py to create many subcategories for SCOP. But during my debug, it showed this warning: "Your account on commons:commons does not have a bot flag. Its edits will be visible in the recent changes and it may get blocked." Eine Anleitung zu den Lizenzen gibt es in Commons:Lizenzen. So wie ich das einschätze, reicht diese E-Mail nicht aus. Die Erlaubnis, das Bild in Wikipedia zu verwenden, reicht nicht aus. Der Urheber des Bildes muss es unter einer freien Lizenz aus Commons:Lizenzvorlagen für den generellen Gebrauch (also nicht nur in Wikipedia) veröffentlichen. This cannot be done as you uploaded the image to en.wikipedia. This is Commons, a different project. Categories on this project cannot be applied to images on other projects. Correct; ChrisiPK was confused because you linked the page on the English Wikipedia instead of File:Steinway-hall-57.jpg here on Commons. Question about single use copyright

I'm a relatively new user to Commons, but am very anxious to respect all copyrights. I have a user who has posted a photograph on Flickr. He would be willing to have the photo used *once* to illustrate the appropriate wikipedia entry. But as he is thinking of publishing a for-profit book incorporating the photo, he only wants the photo used one time, and not able to be reproduced again. Do such strictures mean that Commons is not the best place to use? And if so, is there another way to handle the issue that would both serve his interests but allow the photo to be used? No, such a restriction is not acceptable on Commons. The whole point of Commons is to have a repository of free media -- that is, media that can be used freely. Media that can only be used for one specific purpose is not within Commons' defined scope. (I doubt any of the Wikipedias would want it, either, as their media must also be freely licensed so that it can be copied and distributed freely. Wikipedias must be able to be forked -- that is, a new project created using all of the existing data, as Citizendium has been -- and having an image that can only be used "by Wikipedia" would interfere with that goal.) Change Metadata

I uploaded a file that has some metadata I didn't want in the file. I updated the metadata and uploaded a new copy, but the metadata remains.. Can the image be revoked or replaced so the metadata doesn't show up? Murdocke (talk) 00:42, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

That's a good question. I don't see the answer in Commons:Manipulating meta data. Since you uploaded the photo, I suppose you could request that an administrator delete it, so you can recreate it, but I don't know whether the old copy of the image will be in the history if you recreate it with a new image. See Commons:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion for some templates you can use to request deletion. Another option would be to upload the photo under a new name, and then request deletion of the old one as a duplicate. --Teratornis (talk) 06:27, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Simmering edit war

Hello, I have been working for the past few weeks on a set of templates that aid navigation. The templates have stabilized, but today, a user User:Pigsonthewing has felt it necessary to remove functionality from the template. Using the extension that Firefox hosts on its site called "Operator" when you come upon a page using Template:Places by decade, the user can click on the Yahoo Google or Mapquest maps and get a satellite view of the location. It's pretty fast for authors to encode, for example, when coding the german archive photo File:Bundesarchiv Bild 183-S01000, Berlin, Vereidigung des Feldjägerkorps.jpg, the author notices the location is called "Lustgarten"\, and can slip it in as a template parameter. Real simple. The payback is cool. Now, visitors will notice that Operator offers Maps icons when the page is visited (by the way, this is planned functionality to be integrated into both IE and Firefox in the future, so this is not only for the folks using random addons, but for the mainstream Commons audience. Anyhow, it is not as good as precise Geocoding, and authors are encouraged to refine it if they have the time/ patience to author it in.

Anyway, today this user has decided to remove this functionality from the template. We have gone through a couple reverts and I have suggested either mediation by folks who understand the technical objection he is trying to make (I think it is incorrect). I have also suggested that he might create another set of templates that does whatever he thinks is correct. Instead of seeking some kind of common ground, he chose to simply remove the functionality. On investigation, I have learned that he has been banned on microformats.org for 18 months, and has been censured on WP for similar disruptive behavior. Before today, I had never heard of him.

I just wanted to post the status on this, and request advice on how to handle this. I'd like to be able to continue my work, and need the feature on to be able to do testing. The minimum I need is for the code to be functional during working hours of the day (US west coast hours), so that I can continue development work on these templates. -J JMesserly (talk) 03:45, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

What editing on images is ok??

Hi... I recently edited the File:Clock Tower Mumbai University.jpg image to remove the irritating branches which were obscuring the picture. All other details were left as is. This was immediately reverted by User:Indianhilbilly who has been a regular contributor of that image, and on commons. His reason for the revert, as given in the edit summary is placed below:

"Sniper, you can not just remove stuff from pics. That is very unencyclopedic. Even though those branches are annoying, we have to leave them there cuz we would be misrepresenting if we just removed them. Minor changes are allowed, but no content removal. See en:Talk:India/Archive_36#Need_opinion_on_Nikkul.27s_North_Block_image.

I was wondering if that amount of editing was wrong, since I'm not experienced with editing images and the conventions to be followed. Thanks.

We have a template, {{Retouched}}, for tagging such edited images. For an example of how to use it, see e.g. File:BrennanCourthouse retouched.JPG. Alternatively, you can just describe the modifications in the image description, although using the template is recommended. In any case, as noted above, for any substantial modifications you should always upload the modified version under a different title, preferably one whose name makes it clear that the image has been modified. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 13:54, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

However, is there any consensus on whether my edit was ok or not.... there seems to be some disagreement about the artistic characters of the part of the image removed, esp by User:Foroa... could you elaborate on this please, and what the convention on such retouching is?? ie, how much retouching means that the image should best be uploaded in another name?? Besides removing borders, most image editing will be seen as damage; most of the time, it is a case of personal taste (and some will feel insulted, just as I would rewrite completely what you have been written). Personally, I did not find your editing of File:Clock Tower Mumbai University.jpg an improvement. Just making a new file avoids that kind of conflicts. --Foroa (talk) 09:45, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Newton portrait

I have a photograph, taken by myself, of the portrait of Newton which is in the National Portrait Gallery London. It was not taken in the NPG, but when it was on loan. As far as I know non-flash photography was allowed. Seeing the restrictive policy of the NPG is it all right to upload the picture? Obviously it is in the public domain. The portrait dates to about 1700.

I have no idea how to work out whether it is OK to upload this image, which is listed as being in the Public Domain. I have been unable to find any other photographs with licenses so would appreciate your help, this is the information given: "Photo Properties NP! Adding language-specific captions to images

Is it possible to add language aware captions to images?

It would be nice if images could have captions in different languages and only the caption that the user has established as his language would display.

I can't tell from your question whether you are aware that the {{Information}} template's Description parameter allows for descriptions in multiple languages. All the language versions appear simultaneously, but you can label each one with a language template, such as {{En}} for English, {{Es}} for Spanish, etc. For example see File:Eoliennes a Sloterdijk.jpg which has two language descriptions, with the following wikitext to show them:

{{en|Wind turbines in Sloterdijk}}

Obviously that could get out of hand if you want to display the caption in 200 languages. There is a "uselang" parameter that allows some of the interface of Commons to appear in a specific language, but I don't think it reaches into captions yet. One way to get more features is to donate large sums of money to the Wikimedia Foundation with the stipulation that it hires programmers to build the features you want. Hi Teratornis, I didn't expect such a quick answer. Thank you. My daughter donated $10 to the Wikimedia foundation in my name. Does that count as a large sum? If it does what I'd like is to be able to enter common names of an organism in the image caption for a specific language and for the non-active language common names to be suppressed (I like to see common names as captions on the genus pages for the individual species in addition to their scientific names) . Assuming my $10 counts as a large donation please have the programmers immediately drop whatever they are doing and work on my request. Alas, if you feel that my $10 is not sufficient to justify getting the entire Wikipedia organization working on this I will settle for being appreciative of your response and the hope that if you or somebody else thought it was a good idea that it might get put in the queue for consideration. I was aware of the en| thing. I have mixed feelings about it. I sort of like seeing what the text is in another language, on the other hand it just messes up the page when more than a few languages are displayed, so mostly I lean to the idea that the default should be that the page only shows the text in whatever the active language is and if the text doesn't exist for that language the page defaults to showing the English text. And on that subject, I've noticed that when I enter the wikimedia from a non-english wikipedia that I get the page info displayed in the appropriate foreign language. Cool. But when I click on links those pages are displayed with English info. Maybe cool, if the Wikimedia has some intelligent way of figuring out I'm an English speaker and that I probably want the pages displayed with English, but maybe not cool if when you enter in French, you can't stay in French as you click around. Addressing various points:

You're lucky I was able to respond at all, given the blizzard and ice storm besieging my locale. I'm looking at the map of power outages from Duke Energy and watching the outage numbers climb all around where I am.
I can't quite tell if you are talking about entering organism names here on the Wikimedia Commons site, or whether you mean one or more of the Wikipedias. There is also a Wikispecies project (regrettably it does not seem to involve Natasha Henstridge reprising her starring role from the almost eponymous film). If you refer to captions on the image pages on Wikimedia Commons, I don't think the general public looks here that much. I think most of the viewing will be on the various language Wikipedias, and there the users will type their own image captions which may have little to do with the image captions on Commons.
There is a language preference setting in Special:Preferences. I'm not sure how it propagates if you set up a unified login. When I browse to another language Wikipedia, I see the user interface elements in the native language unless I explicitly set my preference to something else (e.g. English) there.
$10 doesn't buy a lot of software development, unless you outsource to Elbonia. For an example of how money can talk, see:

About the initial subject, I have been messing around with Template:Multilingual description or (Template:mld), which relies on a javascript MediaWiki:Multilingual description.js
It allows to choose between to show one selected language or all language in the description. For this image, it looks like this:
all language enabled
fr language selected
en language selected

To test it, add this line to your monobook.js
importScript('MediaWiki:Multilingual_description.js');

Hello Esby, first let me say that I went to your user page. Very impressive. The picture you chose for the English speakers was stunning. You've inspired me to work a bit on mine. Right now it's pretty lame.

I did some experiments, but may not have done exactly what you suggested. I added the script you talked about to my monobook.js page. I was exactly sure what was supposed to happen but I couldn't see that anything had happened.

I would like to link to wikimedia pages that I have created and or edited for this discussion:

You will note on the Spermophilus page I put the common name of the organism under the binomial name in the caption. When I started doing that I thought it would be nice if wikimedia had some mechanism for adopting to multiple languages. I have now become aware that it does have some, but none of the mechanisms that I am aware of work particularly well for what I would like. Using the {{en|english statement}} is a non-starter for captions. Putting the name of the language in the caption completely junks up the caption and having multiple language captions that worked like this would be really ugly.

On the Sciuridae page I have placed the English common names next to the tribe and subfamily designators. Here I'd like to have the opportunity to allow multiple languages for these captions, but the existing approaches would be pretty ugly also. I think this is an important issue for Wikimedia. One of the keys to the success of Wikimedia is that it is easily accessible to non-English speakers. Right now this seems like a pretty big impediment to me. But it is also possible that I haven't quite understood what you were suggesting or that a good solution already exists for this that I don't quite understand. I am not sure of what you are trying to do but:

Right now, the js script I am talking of is only designed to work with the mld template, or with code similar to its content ie: any code contained in a div tag named 'multilingual'.

Since you are using Template:Translation table, you would probably need to modify its content to add the multilingual div tag.

I'll try working on this template, but I'll probably clone for safe test purposes. As I don't want to mess around with highly used templates.

I'll also try to work on a gadget when I'll have the time, as I feel there should be only language selector per page and not one per mld template used. See User:Esby/test to understand what i mean here.

Some more precisions, I did not wrote the base algorithm, the script is coming from meta initially.

I adapted the javascript a bit (ergonomy), created (with user:Multichill) the mld template to allow users to easily use it for basic purpose.

The mld template actually creates a multilingual div and call Template:ls for each argument.

For some reasons, you can manage to display or hiding languages with the normal language template, but it will not work when the inline parameter is used, I think this is mainly due to inline using span tags instead of div tags.

I wantet tu update the gallery in this article with some pictures http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samanid_Mausoleum. but aparently there is a picture in die english database with the same name as the file has I just uploaded to commons. what do I have to type in to show that my picture is in commons? and without uploading the picture again?

Lacking a copyright

I updated the svg which was outdated. Upon uploading it, as it was an already existing file I left the additional boxes blank. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

JMV290, You have 2 options:

contact the uploader Photohound (talk · contribs) and ask them to add the license of their choice. (I just did that, but if they don't respond you can follow up with them: he has fixed several of his images in the past)
make a new map using a template that you know to be free

I was trying to create a category for Cabinet members of the Calvin Coolidge administration and made a copy & paste error. When I moved the page to get rid of the quotation marks, I took out "Category" as well. I blame it on my blonde highlights. You were not doing anything wrong. It just appears that the software refuses to execute moves into the category namespace from other namespaces. I've created Category:Cabinet members of the Calvin Coolidge administration manually, deleted the page, and added the category to the image. Now put more images into that category.
