improving the image resolution for a WWII photo

File:AleshJermarVELA.jpg
Article(s): en:Alesh Jermar
- Request
- please, improve the image resolution for inclusion on Alesh Jermar's Wikipedia page

I thought that File:AleshJermarVELA.jpg still exists within Wiki but it appears that I need to upload it again. Would I upload it again through the Wikimedia Commons into this request itself? Wikimedia Permissions considers undeleting this file but questions the resolution. I hope that perhaps you may be able to help with improving the image resolution. Please, let me know how to proceed. Clean up old newspaper cartoon

Editorial cartoon

retouched version
Article(s): en:Colonialism
- Request
- It would be helpful if anyone could clean up the horizontal slice across this cartoon, which is presumably the result of damage to the original newspaper (or, alternately, find another version of this image, since Satterfield's work was published in many papers, but I don't really know how one could go about doing that). If, while one is repairing the slice mark, one could also make the overall page somewhat... cleaner, that would also be good, thanks. DS (talk) 18:48, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

- Done, although quality seems questionable. - Gabuxae (talk) 05:35, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Gabuxae: could you not crop the image with more portrait-like dimensions? I think having the crop shaped as a square and focused nearly completely on the face isn't the best way to depict this person in an image of this quality. @PawełMM: could you possibly please have a look? Thanks all, ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 12:08, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Gabuxae and Neveselbert (mobile): In my opinion, low quality (blurry photo) disqualifies any cutting and qualifies for deletion. However, if left aside, the 3x4 format would be more appropriate. PawełMM (talk) 14:32, 1 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM: can you try extracting a new crop in such a format, if you don't mind, please? ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 14:46, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

- @PawełMM: would you have a look please? I know the quality is very poor indeed, but it's the only free representation of this person we have. I think a 3x4 head/chest crop would be suitable in an infobox. ᴀlbanɢeller (talk) 18:14, 1 February 2022 (UTC)

- Compare this specimen taken directly from the U.S. Dept. of Defense website, reflecting the 2021 redesign after the admission of the Chief of Space Operations into the JCS. The above SVG image is an altered SVG version of an earlier JCS badge with only two swords, but the alterations only amount to adding the third sword haphazardly, which isn't completely accurate. The gold crest inside the silver border needs to ever-so-slightly be rescaled and centred exactly to match, and the middle sword to cover the top silver circle. The area just above that circle needs to be slightly altered to match the new version. Whoever is skilled at SVG editing, assistance requested here.

- All of these colour images need colour correction. Specific guidelines for eachː
– Salomonː Image requires colder colour temperature, white balancing, and where necessary, sharpening of details. Use this image of General Jimmy D. Ross as a reference.
– McCaffreyː Needs colour correction and white balancing, especially for the skin.
– Tilelliː Colour correction and white balancing (less of both needed this time), as well as removal of the minor flaws and filter that come from this being a print rather than fully digital picture.
– Byrnesː Removal of yellowing and white balancing.
– Dunwoodyː Richer colours and slight colour balancing to compensate for "rosy" light filter, identical image on this page is a step in the right direction. Another reference.
– Collinsː Found a higher-res image. Grayscale colour correction needed. SuperWIKI (talk) 03:57, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
@PawełMM: Redness too strong (especially for skin) for McCaffrey and for Tilelli, too much blueness. Needs some toning down. - Various colour corrections and detail fixing. GEN Mildren requires removal of signature and picture flaws (no further colour correction needed); the notable ones I see are black marker lines (two to his left, one above his hair, one below his left coat lapel) and creases (one to the left of his neck and one at his right pocket). Gen Vandegrift requires removal of signature and grayscale colour correction. Gen McLennan and Kelley require colour correction and careful white balancing due to the distinct "pinkness" over their images, contrast from background should not be altered where possible. McLennan's colour corrections should be applied to the uncropped version (without removal of signature) and to the cropped version (with removal of signature). Kelley's "pinkness" is slightly less than McLennan's and likely needs less treatment than McLennan's. For both Kelley and McLennan, use these as reference. SuperWIKI (talk) 06:46, 30 January 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM: Pocket lines where you deleted the signature for Vandegrift are now scuffed over. Restoration of those lines needed along with fabric detail where necessary. - The first five (Snyder, Towers, Weyland, Rawlings, Holloway) need grayscale colour correction and for Holloway, removal of signature. If it doesn't make the photo look off in any way, please remove the odd print marks over Snyder's image. For McCormick, the borders (i.e. where the photo ends and the white paper begins) need straightening out since it's a high-definition shot of a print photograph. If that is possible, in the process, could you increase the lighting ever so slightly, since the photo looks slightly underexposed? After that, upload a cropped version of the photograph (crop the white border) under the filename 80-G-625350 Admiral Lynde D. McCormick, USN (cropped).jpg. -
Gen Larry D. Welch
-
ADM Vern Clark
Article(s): en:List of United States Navy four-star admirals, en:List of United States Air Force four-star generals
- Request
- Colour corrections needed for these images. Arnold just needs cleaning and slight tuning down of the white filter over his image, almost no white balancing needed, if any. Gayler needs white balancing; the ideal result should be 85 percent between the current version and this one. For Welch, removal and cleaning of the white filter over the image is needed but white balancing isn't as necessary here; basically please do what you did with Mahaffey, and the result should look (colour-wise) exactly like this version. For Clark, cleaning and very slight reduction of the glare to look more like this portrait taken around the same time. SuperWIKI (talk) 01:22, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM: Guidelines for Welch (see above)ː Basically please do what you did with Mahaffey, and the result should look (colour-wise) exactly like this version. Unless I interrupted you and you aren't finished yet, or otherwise my computer isn't registering the photo changes, even with ?purge, and if so I apologize. SuperWIKI (talk) 08:10, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- P.S. For Welch, if the exact picture crop of that colour can't be attained, some darkening and cleaning of the excess white filter and bringing back some more of the colour (especially the blue of the uniform) washed out by that filter will do. Thank you. SuperWIKI (talk) 08:13, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM: Last request for today, I believe. Can you up the brightness for Welch ever so slightly and make corresponding minor corrections at your discretion to make that increase in brightness not look out of place colour-wise and white-balance-wise? SuperWIKI (talk) 08:20, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

GEN Fred K. Mahaffey

Gen Walter Kross
-
GEN Ralph E. Haines Jr.
-
Gen Michael J. Dugan
-
Gen Jimmie V. Adams
Article(s): en:List of United States Army four-star generals, en:List of United States Air Force four-star generals
- Request
- Guidelines for each:
- Mahaffeyː There is a very faint miscolour line spanning the bottom of Mahaffey's portrait at the level of his right pocket badges. If you can see it, that needs very slight adjustment to match the rest of the photo.
- Krossː Remove the very slight yellowing and do some slight white balancing as required, as well as cleaning. Colour guide for the Transportation Command badge (the badge below the medals for Kross) for use as reference.
- Hainesː White balancing, removal of the blueness needed.
- Duganː Removal of the blue filter over the image, but little white balancing is needed otherwise. Result should be similar to yesterday's image.
- Adamsː Removal of the gray/white filter over the image, no white balancing needed. Also removal of the noise over Adam's head where necessary. Result should also be similar to yesterday's image, but treatment should be less vigorous. SuperWIKI (talk) 01:58, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Additional commentsː
- @PawełMM: Still some slight white filter over the Dugan image that should be freshened up and removed. Otherwise, the colouring and white balancing are fine and shouldn't be changed. Thanks! SuperWIKI (talk) 11:34, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM:
- Hainesː The uniform, as a result of the colour correction, now has a "muddy shading" effect, as compared to the original (i.e. the original upload on 31 August 2011). Can you please try to fix that to the extent that you can?
- Adamsː A little bit more exposition enhancement needed to strengthen colour in the uniform. SuperWIKI (talk) 13:30, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- Last one for Dugan's image. Could you please reintroduce the pinkness/yellowness/brownness (unsure how to describe it) from the version of the upload before you retouched it for Dugan's skin? Thanks. SuperWIKI (talk) 01:21, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

- Request
Note: Request may contain a lot of links. To whoever is taking it, these links are for reference and information, and I ask they be looked through carefully beforehand. The images in gallery are the ones to be altered, not the linked images.
1) LTG George W. Casey Jr. mainly requires a restoration of the excessively washed out colours, especially for his uniform, namely changing from washed-out black to the green of the Class A Green Service Uniform that is meant to be shown in that image. The uniform fixes may include restoration of pocket and lapel lines. Additionally, toning down of excess white and brightness that is washing out the colours of everything else in the image to a significant degree, and in some cases (note the silver-rimmed glasses) cause elements of the image to look overly sharp. This alteration may take the longest, and may involve further requests for amendment on my part. Here are the references that are to be used in the touch-up: Image of another general, Peter Schoomaker (uniform colour reference), Casey as Vice Chief of Staff, Casey as Chief of Staff. Also refer to Casey's Wikipedia page for colour references to medals and badges.
- @SuperWIKI: It is not possible to change the color of the uniform to your suggested color. This would require very aggressive retouching (hand-painting with other colors) which would greatly reduce the value of the photo. So I corrected it in a possible way. PawełMM (talk) 07:39, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
2) Gen Hansford T. Johnson requires very slight reduction in the greenish/yellowish hue in the image, as well as very slight touch-ups to bring out detail in the skin of his head. Otherwise, almost no white balancing or changes in lighting/contrast/exposition needed. Colour references for skin here and here.
3) Lt Gen Henry Viccellio Jr. requires removal of the purplish filter and white balancing along with it, as well as cleaning of picture flaws, including smudges at the area of the name tag, left coat lapel near the necktie, and gray line at the left pocket (but you should also clean up any other flaws you see). Otherwise, little contrast, exposition or lighting fixes needed. Colour references here, here and here.
- @PawełMM: Colour needs to be made a bit richer. However, this should be done with compliance to the references I've sent, and not make the picture visibly warmer (i.e. yellow or overexposed). SuperWIKI (talk) 08:47, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @SuperWIKI: Done. PawełMM (talk) 09:25, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
4) Gen Earl T. O'Loughlin requires removal of the slight blueness over the drawing and some white balancing to go along with it. Otherwise, little contrast, exposition, or lighting fixes needed.
5) Gen John W. Pauly requires removal of the reddish filter over the image, as well as cleaning of flaws. Should that cause the blue of the uniform to get washed out to black, some exposition enhancement or colour correction will be needed to bring back the blue in the uniform. However, given that the lighting of the original picture minus the red filter seems to cast a shadow over the uniform naturally, the exposition alterations and colour correction must be applied sparingly. Done PawełMM (talk) 07:39, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM: This may be involved in future requests, but are full colorizations of black and white photographs considered legitimate requests in the Workshop? The closest resource I found doesn't specifically address this since it's an essay, beyond saying colorizations are within Wikimedia's scope. SuperWIKI (talk) 14:43, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- @SuperWIKI: I for one am rather against coloring black/white photos. It always feels like a self-creation that doesn't fully reflect the actual skin color. Therefore, I would leave such photos untouched.
- Please see the corrected color of Casey's uniform. If it is wrong you could restore an older version. PawełMM (talk) 17:11, 14 February 2022 (UTC)
- Wasn't asking for you to do the colour for Casey's uniform. Just a question on colorization. SuperWIKI (talk) 22:33, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

• Waters: White balancing and removal of excess blue or yellowness. Reference for colour on flag. Reference for khaki uniform, though referenced colouring from here may need adjustment based on lighting of photo.
- @PawełMM: Removal of excess pink in the shadows, particularly for the red flags in background, is needed. Additionally, the shadow increase as a result of the colour correction needs to be moderately reduced to better match the original upload, alongside any other contrast modifications contributing to this issue. SuperWIKI (talk) 09:39, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
• Schwartz: White balancing and reduction of excess blueness. Where possible bring out very, very slightly the details of the U.S. pins on the lapels and the skin on Schwartz's head without compromising the overall look of the image. Colour fixes should most emulate, but not completely (since the lighting on Schwartz's image is different), this portrait of GEN David A. Bramlett.
• Hendrix: Slight white balancing and significant reduction of yellowness/greenness on image.
• Breedlove: Removal of excess pinkness on portrait. After the removal and colour correction, you may do some white balancing should it prove necessary afterwards in your eyes. Lighting should be more like this. Here's a reference for the rightmost blue flag in background. SuperWIKI (talk) 04:26, 17 February 2022 (UTC)

Article(s): fr:Abbaye de Saint-Antoine-l'Abbaye
- Request
- Could you please create a panorama with these images? Thanks, --Yann (talk) 20:56, 22 June 2022 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
@Yann: I can't imagine creating a panorama out of these photos. For this to be possible the photos should have been taken at the same time from the same place with the same lens, with fragments overlapping each other, which would make it possible to combine them. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the attached photos do not meet the necessary conditions. You can see it at [5]. PawełMM (talk) 06:03, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM: There were taken at the same time with the same equipment. I know the requirement. It seems one is displayed horizontally while the other ones are displayed vertically, so rotation may be needed if the software doesn't recognize the orientation. Yann (talk) 18:06, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- No Yann. They are not all the same focal length and they are not all taken from the same place, i.e. the same position. Huginn can make a backside of pictures that are near perfect. I've been looking at it for half an hour, rotating and cropping the images and trying to figure Huginn out again, only getting started by that far, and I can see from the angle of the rings on the chandelier that the images are not taken from the same position, from the tape around the electrical wires feeding the chandelier on the next two, the very last pillar on the central image does not match the camera position of the same pillar in the fourth image etc... None of them are taken from the same place, none of them are level, there isn't enough of them, and you have at least 2 focal lengths/zoom lengths across the five images and they are all from slightly different positions... it won't do a good stitch. I don't think such a small zoom length difference will prevent a panorama but it will reduce the size. Um, if you do not have a tripod but you are brave, tie pieces of string to the pillars, low down near the floor (tell the curator/clergy of the church what you are doing and why you are doing it, to tie some pieces of string as a guide for the camera, invite them to watch you do it, it will only take five minutes, show them your Commons uploads and they will gladly want you to show off this lovely interesting place to the whole world), tie the pieces of string across the pillars, if there is no pillar at the exact center, tie string across the two closest, then tie string between those two pieces of string, mark the center of the room on it, so that you have the exact center of the room (relative to the roof) low down near the floor (you might have to lie down to stay out of the view but you'll get the shot). Hold the center of your camera at that center-of-the-room spot while you take the pictures. Take TEN pictures. Take twenty. You can delete any unused ones. Get every one of them level, square with the camera screen, so that they don't have to be rotated at all. Come back with those images and I bet you will get a great panorama done. Maybe there is an easier way of doing it, but that is one way to do it. Good luck o/ ~ R.T.G 20:47, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- @PawełMM and RTG: I tool these images, so I know what I did. Yann (talk) 20:57, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Yann: Huginn just gave me an error message trying to match the chandelier... "No similar point found. Check the similarity visually. Correlation coefficient (0.765) is lower than the threshold set in the preferences." And that setting is for playing around with it. Maybe it was simply the amount of movement bringing the camera over your head and to the other side. You need to hold the camera in the EXACT spot. Lifting it over your head will move it far more than when you image a horizon. I mean pick a spot in the air... Now you have to take images with the camera in that exact spot, like it was on a tripod. And get them way more level, Yann, and take way more of them, and way closer to the floor, because you are losing a lot on those end pieces. You aren't getting it any wider than the small windows in sets of three just below the roof. I would get nothing from messing you about. I assume you are trying to do some serious business, so I've given you the serious instruction to get it just right. Camera in the same place, like a tripod that didn't move an inch. More photos, like 7 or 8 minimum. Level them up horizontally. Get as close to the floor while you are taking them as you can. :) ~ R.T.G 22:20, 23 June 2022 (UTC)
- @Yann: For a panorama to work, there needs to be enough features to add control points (whether using automatic or manual) and for that to work you need the same focal length, remain in the same spot for every photo (as per above) and a big enough set of images that will overlap each other for it to work. Slight movement from the spot every photo taken is going make the panorama harder, even impossible to create. Bidgee (talk) 22:43, 23 June 2022 (UTC)

- @Yann: Hi, I would not have the experience with that but I imagine photoshop could do something, and there are certainly a lot of "ai" around for that purpose. If nobody here knows, ask at FPC, and ask at en.wiki FPC if you can. ~ R.T.G 12:40, 24 June 2022 (UTC)

b/w cropped version by PawełM
- Request
- As this is a $3,000 pump, I have an opportunity to photograph it that I may not have again. I have a drafting table with dirty light-green cover that I could use to take a picture of this piece of equipment. Would that work better? I am looking to provide as high quality an image of this device as I can. There may be some image processing that would help. I have an iPhone 13 pro. I can more info on the lighting I have available. --Ivangiesen (talk) 14:11, 18 July 2022 (UTC)

- I took this view of a sunset with the idea of contributing to WikiVoyage. If done right, a composite of these three images would make an excellent banner. Unfortunately, my video editing skills are not upto getting this done. Even though the camera settings weren't changed between the three images, and the images were taken over a space of two to three seconds, I'm finding the images have different level of lighting and colors and even scale. The photos were captured by manually panning the camera from left to right while I stood in the same spot. I spent a few hours trying to make the composite, but had to give up without much success. I'm hoping that the experts here can help. What would be ideal is if the composite could preserve the sunset, and the islands, with as much of the surrounding sky and bottom of the image as possible. --Marvin The Paranoid (talk) 10:05, 8 November 2022 (UTC)

@GualdimG: Done Retouched reflections of light, however, exact improvement is not possible. Reflections on the glass of the picture frame are still visible. Their improvement would change the picture in a significant way. PawełMM (talk) 11:38, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- Very much better. Thank you. GualdimG (talk) 11:42, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
