The first A-7D aircraft were received from LTV by Air Force Systems Command at Edwards AFB and Eglin AFB in early 1968. Tactical Air Command received training aircraft at Nellis AFB and Luke AFB in 1969. Operational aircraft were first received at Myrtle Beach and Davis-Monthan in 1971; England in 1972. PACAF received aircraft at Korat via transfer from deployed Myrtle Beach units in March 1973.

After the end of the Vietnam War, transfers to Air National Guard units began in 1974, and with the deployment of the A-10 Thunderbolt II to Tactical Air Command in 1976, transfers increased rapidly with the last active-duty A-7Ds being sent to Air National Guard units in 1981. The F-117A development program used A-7Ds from 1979-1989.
