A-7D Corsair IIs at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base were assigned to the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing between 1971 and 1979. It was one of three Tactical Air Command bases that the A-7D was assigned for operational deployments. (England and Myrtle Beach Air Force Bases were the other two).

The original A-7D operations were transferred to Davis-Monthan from the 58th Tactical Fighter Training Wing, Luke AFB, Arizona. A switch of units took place in which the 355th TFW replaced the Luke 4453d Combat Crew Training Wing.

A-7D squadrons assigned to the 355th TFW were:

  • 354th Tactical Fighter Squadron 1 Jul 1971-1 Apr 1979
  • 357th Tactical Fighter Squadron 1 Jul 1971-30 Jun 1979
  • 40th Tactical Fighter Squadron 10 Oct 1971-1 Apr 1972
Inactivated and replaced by: 358th Tactical Fighter Squadron 1 Jun 1972-30 Jun 1978
  • 333d Tactical Fighter Squadron 16 Jul 1971-1976

The 355th TFW was the second operational A-7D wing established by Tactical Air Command. Between 1972 and 1974, A-7Ds from Davis-Monthan were attached to the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing (Deployed) at Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand on a rotating basis. Beginning in 1974 until 1978, rotating deployments of A-7Ds were made to Howard AFB, Canal Zone for training with Army ground forces under "Coronet Cove".

The A-7Ds were replaced by the A-10 Thunderbolt II, beginning on 14 Feb 1976
