Myrtle Beach Air Force Base began receiving A-7D Corsair IIs in April 1970 when the 511th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 4554th TFW began receiving aircraft, replacing the activated Air National Guard F-100 Super Sabres which returned to their home stations. The 354th Tactical Fighter Wing returned from South Korea in June 1970, replacing the 4554th and the 355th TFS was activated on 1 November, becoming the second A-7D squadron.

In June 1971, the 511th TFS was inactivated and transferred its aircraft to the 353d TFS; the 356th TFS was also activated becoming the third A-7D squadron. The 4554th Tactical Fighter Replacement Squadron was also activated becoming the fourth A-7D squadron, although the 4554th was designed a transition training squadron.

The 354th TFW was the first operational A-7D wing established by Tactical Air Command. The wing deployed the 353d TFS to Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand in October 1972. In March 1973, the 353d transferred its aircraft to the PACAF 3d TFS at Korat, and returned un-equipped. The 355th and 356th TFSs continued a rotational deployment to Korat until April 1974, and the 353d was re-equipped with new aircraft.

The wing performed normal training and deployments as directed with the A-7Ds until 1977 when a transition was begun to the A-10 Thunderbolt II. Transfers of the A-7D aircraft to Air National Guard and other USAF active-duty units had begun in the summer of 1974, and accelerated in 1977 with the last of the A-7Ds at Myrtle Beach departing by the end of the year.
