First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Re: Is this permitted? - cont'd...

[edit]

Hi Wilma,

Regarding Image:Nfpony.jpg, I think it is OK, but only just.In future, please only transfer images that clearly state who the photographer/creator is. This information is essential to figuring out the copyright status.

OK, I'll do my damnedest to verify creator of image, or failing that, replace it with other image. Your colleague Deusentrib seems to be of similar opinion.

For CommonsHelper, you should use it when you want to transfer an image to the Commons, like you did with the previous image. It will save you some typing and also make sure you don't accidentally miss any important information. So say you find an image on en.wp that you want to transfer to the Commons. First you need to examine the source information like previously described, and make sure it is reasonable. If it is OK, go to the CommonsHelper tool and fill in the Image name. If you want it to have the same name on Commons, leave "new name" blank. 'Language code' & 'Project' tell the tool where to find the existing image, so in this case it would be language code=en and project=wikipedia. You could also use it for Spanish Wikibooks, Swedish Wiktionary, Swahili Wikisource, etc. Click "get text", then you can easily copy and paste the text into the "summary" at Special:Upload on Commons. Well if you click "upload at Commons" it will even paste all the information in there for you!

Does this make sense? I'm not sure exactly what you want to know.

This makes perfect sense, except follow-up question: you say "Transfer", is the CommonsHelper really a file MOVE or a file COPY, i.e. if it's a MOVE, does it automatically change any page links to the image that is being moved? I feel a bit weary about moving other people's files, but it seems to make sense to move as many images to Commons as possible, copyright status permitting, of course.
You'll have to excuse me, while I am perfectly happy inside a PC, I have yet to master the world of Wiki from a technical viewpoint, it's like learning a new humongous s/w package, and you can't press F1 to get help! Thanks for all your help so far, you deserve a patience barnstar, if there is one!
